Passover and what it represents is the most important pivotal point in the Bible. For that matter, it is the most important pivot point in all of history. The root of Passover can be found in the book of Exodus where Moses under the direction of God first institutes Passover. 
They had to slaughter an unblemished lamb and put the blood of the lamb on the doorposts of their houses so the angel of death would pass over their houses, thus preventing the death of their eldest son. The blood of this lamb had no saving power, so why did it prevent the death of the eldest son of the household? The power lay in what it symbolized. 
This event would become a picture and a prophecy of the real Lamb of God who was to come. Hundreds of years later, on another Passover, Jesus became the sacrificial Lamb for the sins of the world. His blood was the blood that held the real power. But his death was not enough. Something else had to follow to ratify the decree of forgiveness. There had to be a resurrection. It would be the proof that the power of death had been broken forever. 
1 Corinthians 15:19-20, If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 
Jesus alluded to His resurrection on another occasion with the death of Lazarus, another situation that seemed hopeless. But with this event, Jesus gave a promise that would impact eternity. 
We are going to look at the word of hope Jesus spoke into their temporal life, but with far reaching consequences to everyone’s eternal future, including ours. This is the key to living victorious in this life, and the next. We will see how this applies to our lives, our problems in the temporal, and how we are called to action by Christ is this world. 
I. Hold on to Hope 
There are two dimensions to this event. The physical dimension impacting Lazarus and his loved ones, and the eternal the spiritual dimension. Christ was using this event to teach an eternal foundational truth. He is Lord over death and what happens after we die physically. 
The only way He could prove it, was by returning someone from the other side of the grave. This would show that He had intimate knowledge of what happened after death and in eternity, that He was active in that dimension also, and had the power to impact both dimensions. 
 
 
A. Hold on to temporal hope 
 Verse 17 - so when Jesus came, He found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 
 The situation seemed hopeless. Jewish tradition taught that a person’s spirit departed from his body after three days. In the minds of the mourners, it was hopeless. Lazarus’ spirit had already departed. 
 Is there a situation in your life that looks hopeless? It is dead and buried? Is the problem already past its sell by date? Jesus specializes in hopeless cases. When there is no way out, nowhere left to turn, we can turn to Him. There may not be a way out, but we can look up. 
 Verse 21 - Martha says to Jesus, that if He had been there her brother would not have died. She is troubled by this. In other words, “Jesus, I don’t understand. Why is this not working out? Why weren’t you here?” 
 Sometimes we have the same type of questions when we don’t understand what is going on. But immediately we hear her heart of faith. She says, “even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give you.” This shows that even though she doesn’t understand, she still has faith in Jesus.

That’s the theme of the gospel, the greatest news the world has ever heard, that God would give His only Son, to make a wretch, a sinner like us, His treasure. 
 
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest event in all human history. God’s entire plan of the ages rests on that one historic event. But what you also need to know is that God’s entire plan for your life rests on that historic event as well. 
 
The significance and meaning of the resurrection is found in one of the simplest verses in all the Bible, “God loved the world so much, God loved you so much, that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” 
 
In other words, the reason God sent His Son is because He loves you and doesn’t want you to perish, He wants you to have everlasting life. Someone might say, “Why would God love me? He is holy and righteous. Surely, He knows about all the messes and mistakes I’ve made, why would he want anything to do with me?” Because you’re made in the image of God and He loves you, that’s why. 
 
 When we studied through the book of Genesis, we read that we are made in the image of God. I remember when we had our first child. I was holding her in my arms, absolutely amazed because I realized that she was made in my image. My love for her was not dependent on what she did, it was based on the fact that I was her father, and she was my daughter, and she was made in my image. 
 
It’s God’s nature to love, and He sent His Son so the world would know how much He loves. He sent His Son to seek and to save that which was lost. In other words, He’s pursuing you. That’s love. He’s knocking on the door of your heart, He’s calling out your name, and He wants you to open the door of your heart so you can have a relationship to God as your Father. 
 
You may be a sinner; but He just so happens to be a forgiver; He’s a redeemer. He gives righteousness to sinners as a gift, you don’t even have to earn it. Eternal life is a gift, you just have to receive it. It’s that simple. 
 
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.… Do you believe this?” 
 
Someone might say, “How can you say this? Surely you know that everyone dies.” Of course, I know everyone dies, I know that very well. When our daughter was killed it was the most difficult thing we’ve ever endured, but it was her body that died. Her soul lives, she was given eternal life because she asked Jesus into her heart as Lord and Savior. 
 
Everyone will die a physical death, the statistics on death are pretty impressive; something like one out of every one people die physically. The older you get the more you understand that. When you’re young that’s harder to grasp. When you’re young it seems like you live forever, but the truth is you’re growing until about 25 years old, and then it’s all downhill from there. 
 
God sent His Son so we would have hope beyond the grave. Death is not the end. Do you think that when you breathe your last you simply cease to exist? No, your body dies, but God made your soul to be eternal. The question is what happens after your last breath on this earth. God sent His Son so you would have hope beyond this life. 
 
Do you have hope? What do you put your hope in? 
 
The resurrection is about having life instead of death. The resurrection is about having hope from God instead of despair. He ignites our soul and fills our lives with meaning and purpose and transforms us by His presence in our lives.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not just the greatest day on the calendar, it’s the greatest day in all human history. Everything before looks forward to that event and everything after looks back to it. 
 
The road to the cross began before the foundation of the world. God sent His Son to reconcile the world to Himself, and the entire plan of God rests on the cross at Calvary and the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. 
 
The road to the cross comes to Jerusalem as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on this day which begins what is famously called the “Passion Week.” He rode into Jerusalem on the foal of a donkey; He taught in the temple, He healed the sick, and He confronted the Jewish leaders. Later that week He was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, arrested and then brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, who had Him beaten, scourged and crucified. 
 
When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the foal of a donkey, crowds were casting palm branches on the road in front of Him, shouting from Psalm 118, “Hosanna! Hosanna to the Son of David;” declaring Him to be the long-awaited Messiah, the King of Israel, and the hope of the world. 
 
There was anticipation in the air, something big was about to happen. They had been looking, longing, hoping for someone who could overthrow Rome. It’s very much like today in the sense that there is so much wrong in our nation that people are hoping and looking for someone who can heal our nation and bring this broken world to a better place. 
 
Who better than the man who raised Lazarus from the dead and who confronted and humiliated the Jewish leaders that everyone knew were corrupt. 
 
But Jesus didn’t come to conquer Rome. Jesus came to conquer something much greater than Rome; He came to conquer death; He came to become the Resurrection and the Life; to become the Way for us to be reconciled to God as our Father. He came to pay the penalty for our sin so we could be set free and have a life to live for eternity! 
 
This is a story about God on the move. God is sending His Son. He is on the road to the cross. Some will receive Him as King; some will resist and harden their hearts. But it’s also a story that is personal; how will you respond? 
 
Did you ever step back and ask what God thinks of sinners? Did He look down on this world and say, “Look at all those wonderful people. They’re so adorable I can’t help myself; I must have them with Me in heaven.” Like when my wife sees a puppy or like when many see a baby, they’re just so adorable you must have one. 
 
No, God looks at sinners and sees they’re in trouble. God loves you and He sent His Son to seek and to save that which was lost. God sent His Son because He loves sinners and wants to reconcile sinners to Himself. 
 
The story begins with those who receive Him with joy. The crowds are shouting and celebrating; they have found their King! 
 
But the story is also about those who refuse to receive Him, to open their hearts. There were many that resisted the Holy Spirit, kicking against the goads, stiffening their necks and hardening their hearts. Why? Because they want to be king of their own lives; master of their own destiny, captain of their own soul. 
 
Here’s the problem, people don’t have enough power to become king of their own soul; master of their own destiny. When they stand before God on judgment day, they won’t be able to say, “I don’t recognize the authority of this court.” 
There is a day fixed when every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. 
 
This is a story about God on the move. The road to the cross comes down the Mount of Olives with Jesus riding on the foal of a donkey with the crowds shouting, “Hosanna! Hosanna!” But the road to the cross also brings Jesus in direct confrontation. 
 
 This story is about the response. When God sends His Son, that requires a response.

When Jesus was teaching, large crowds would gather to hear Him speak, and in Luke 15, it says that all the tax gatherers and sinners were coming near to listen to Him. 
 
 When the Jewish leaders saw that sinners were drawing near to Him, however, they grumbled, saying, “Can you believe this? Look, this man receives sinners and even eats with them.” They thought they were accusing Him, but Jesus wanted sinners to draw near to Him. Even today, Jesus wants sinners to draw near. Jesus is often called ‘the friend of sinners.’ 
 
 The Jewish leaders were wrong. A lot of people are wrong when it comes to what Jesus thinks about them. Which reminds me of a funny story… A burglar broke into a house and as he was tiptoeing through the dark he heard a voice, “Jesus is watching you…” 
 
 Many people have the wrong view of God. Some think He’s always cranky because they’re convinced He’s angry with sinners. Other people think He’s out to ruin their lives to get back at them for all the ways they’ve messed up their lives. 
 
 But all of that’s wrong. Do you know why Jesus is called the friend of sinners? Because “God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him would not perish, but would have everlasting life.” 
 
 Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost, He came to give hope to those who have no hope. 
 
 Many in the community know that our daughter was murdered several years ago. When it finally came to trial, both my wife and I had the opportunity to speak directly to the man who killed our daughter. When we spoke to him, each of us offered our forgiveness. I then added, “If you want to do anything to help us, then take this forgiveness as an opportunity to start your life over. One day you will stand before the judge of all the earth and give an account of your life, but it’s not too late, this is an opportunity to redeem your life.” 
 
 God is a Redeemer; he gives hope to the hopeless; He gives meaning and purpose to those who are lost. 
 
 A few years ago, I visited a prison in Texas where there is a program that takes inmates and trains them with the good news of the bible and makes them chaplains and pastors. They are then sent out to all the other prisons in Texas to redeem lives and transform other inmates by the power of God. 
 
We now have that same program here in Oregon, by the way. When I was in Texas, I had the opportunity to meet with some of the inmates that were being trained to be chaplains and I asked, “What has this meant to you personally?” They responded, “It means everything to us. We have hope, we have meaning and purpose in our lives.” 
 
 One of them told us his story, “My mother always blamed herself for the mess I made of my life,” he said, “when I graduated, they let my mom attend the ceremony. Afterward, I folded my cap and my gown and gave them to her. I then said, “Happy Mother’s Day…” 
 
 In Luke 15 there’s a story of a young man who messed up his life. That part of the story we can all relate to; but there’s much more; it’s not just a story about a young man who messed up his life, it’s a story about a father who sees his broken son walking toward home. He runs down the road toward his son. And with tears of joy welcomes him home. 
 
 Here’s the thing; it’s never too late to come home. It’s never too late to change your life. You’re not too young, you’re not too old. You’re going to have the opportunity today to change your life. 
 
My dad was an alcoholic. He abused my mother, then later divorced her, and by his own admission he was just an old wretched cuss. But at 75 years old he realized he had wasted most of his life. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a service just like this. He came forward and gave his life to Christ and I baptized him with my own hands.
