Paul wrote the book of Ephesians to a very active and vibrant church. He was not admonishing this church because of problems trying to keep them afloat. This letter was written to encourage them to continue the good work. And not only that, but to grow deeper in their faith in Christ. 
I believe that we have a very healthy church because it is grounded on the word of God. So, in some way this relates to the church of Ephesus. We should not grow complacent, but keep wanting more, keep growing in faith by strengthening the inner man. 
As we read in the first chapter about our sanctification, we know that this is a continual process as we grow in the grace of God. This is relevant to new believers and also to those who have been serving Christ for many years. 
Paul’s prayer for them is to be strengthened in faith by growing deeper in love. 
I. God’s Love is a Transforming Power 
 Verse 12 - We come to the Father through Jesus Christ, “I am the way, the truth and the life,” Jesus said, “no man comes to the Father but by Me.” 
 But the idea that we have bold and confident access to the Father is a remarkable idea and counter intuitive to the way people often think about God. 
 This is part of the “unfathomable riches of Christ” that Paul spoke of; these are the great truths that Paul brings to light. 
 Most people see themselves as sinners who have no right to be bold or confident in their access to God. But if you would see yourself as an adopted son or daughter, then you would realize that your relationship to God has been completely defined by that great truth that you are now adopted as a son. 
Illus. – My kids have boldness and confidence to come to me. They do not have to follow the same protocols that outsiders must follow. My kids can run to me and jump into my arms, jump on my lap, and have access to me and privileges that others do not have. 
 You have to understand that God loves you unconditionally, but He loves you too much to leave you as you are; under the tyranny and bullying of the lies of the world. He wants to set you free to be all you can be in Christ. 
 This is the foundation from which we start the journey of change. 
 For this reason, Paul wrote, I bow my knees before the Father… This is Paul’s second powerful prayer for them -- and for us. 
 
 To grow in strength, one must first be willing to submit to His power, because God is the source of our power. 
James 4:6-8, But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. 
A. God strengthens the inner man 
 The inner man is where the most ‘work’ has to be done. 
 Verse 16 - Paul prays that God would grant, according to the riches of His glory, that you be strengthened with power in the inner man. 
 The inner man is strengthened by the Holy Spirit. What difference would it make in your life if you were truly strengthened in the inner man by the Holy Spirit? Strong spiritual bearing comes from having a spiritual foundation and then building upon it. 
2 Corinthians 4:16, Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. 
 What happens when the inner man is weak? Faith is weakened and then when storms and troubles come faith is shipwrecked. People with weak faith react in the flesh when offended, emotions become their master and they are easily defeated. 
 Strengthen the inner man day by day. How? The Holy Spirit strengthens the soul; therefore, build your life spiritually and give attention to your soul. The Holy Spirit is the greatest personal inner growth coach of all time. 
Illus. - How much time do we spend on the outer man, primping and prepping our appearance? How much time do we spend on the inner man? 
 Could this be because people can’t see the inner man? Exercise is a good example of the difference between the outer man and the inner man.

Hezekiah was reigning as king in Judah, Israel in the south, in those days. He was a good king. He was the greatest king since David. He trusted in the Lord and brought about a great revival in Israel. He brought reforms that even Solomon had not done. 
 
The northern kingdom of Israel had already been destroyed by Assyria at this point. Israel in the north had been carried away and displaced to some distant land and other people were brought in to replace them. They inter-married with the remnant of Hebrews who remained. These people later became known as the Samaritans. 
 
As we studied last week, Assyria almost destroyed Judah in the south as well. Hezekiah, to prepare for the siege, engineered a tunnel to divert the Gihon Springs to the Pool of Siloam inside Jerusalem. It was 1,777 feet long and 30 feet underground through solid bedrock. Hezekiah’s tunnel is still active today, though so many walk through it that the water is not used for drinking. 
 
First, Assyria laid siege to Jerusalem and then later Hezekiah received a letter from the king of Assyria warning him not to trust in the God of Israel. But Hezekiah brought that letter to the house of the Lord and laid it out before Him and prayed that God would save them. 
 
God responded by saying, “Because you have prayed to Me about the king of Assyria, I have heard you.” That night an angel of the Lord came through the camp of Assyria and 185,000 soldiers of Assyria mysteriously died. 
 
Sometime shortly afterward, Hezekiah became mortally sick. We don't know the exact nature of his illness, but we do know that there was a boil of some type associated with it. Perhaps it was a form of cancer, we don't know for certain. Interestingly, Ben Gurion University studied the chemical compounds in figs as a treatment for cutaneous anthrax based on this account in 2 Kings. 
 
The prophet Isaiah came to Hezekiah with a message from the Lord, “Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.” Here the life lessons and spiritual application begin for us as well. 
 
I. Set Your House in Order 
 
 The message that Isaiah brought to King Hezekiah was that he would die and not live and therefore should set his house in order. 
 
 We use the same phrase today. When someone is facing a terminal illness, sometimes a doctor will say to the patient, “There’s nothing more we can do, you should get your affairs in order.” 
 
 For many people, that means putting together a last will and testament so their family doesn't have to argue about things after they’re gone. 
 
 But is that all there is? If all we leave is something that must be sorted out by a lawyer, I submit that we haven't left much. 
 
 In other words, wouldn’t you want to leave more than money and things? Wouldn’t you want to leave a legacy? A legacy that might mean that your life meant something, and that you made a difference with your life. 
 
Illus – One of the goals I have in mind to leave something for others is to have a complete set of sermons from Genesis to Revelation. It is a life goal. I would also like to write about the life lessons from each book in the bible. 
 
 Many have ‘bucket lists’ of things they would like to do or to experience. I think we should also have a bucket list of things to do for others. 
 
A. Keep your relationships in order 
 Setting your house in order suggests that there are things that remain undone. 
 The scriptures teach clearly that it is good and godly to keep relationships in order. 
Romans 12:18, If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 
 Are there thank you notes to write? Are there people you need to call to let them know how much they mean to you? 
 Are there people you need to call and ask their forgiveness for something you have done? 
 Or maybe you’ve been holding on to hurts and wounds and have allowed bitterness to take root in your heart. 
Hebrews 12:15, See to it that no one come short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many are defiled.

Our story unfolds in the kingdom of Judah. The back story was that Assyria had become a world dominating power. With absolute cruelty and coldness of heart, they were destroying nation after nation, city after city. 
 
The northern kingdom of Israel had already been destroyed by Assyria at this point. They had done to Israel what they had also done to many other nations, they carried them away to a distant place, caused them to lose their national identity, and simply disappear into the populations of the world. 
 
They became what many have called the ten lost tribes of Israel. But God preserved a remnant for Himself of these tribes which we will see as we continue our study through the bible. 
 
Assyria then moved exiles from other conquered nations into Samaria, another name for northern Israel. Those people intermarried with the remnant of Jews who remained, and they became known as Samaritans. 
 
They were there during the time of Jesus’ ministry. In fact, the woman at the well Jesus led to the Lord in John chapter 4 was a Samaritan. When the Pharisees wanted to insult Jesus, they called him a Samaritan. 
After Assyria destroyed and took captive the northern kingdom of Israel, they turned toward Judah where Hezekiah was King, intending to destroy and consume Judah as well. 
 
To strike fear in the hearts of those in Judah, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent officers to Jerusalem to weaken and intimidate them in a war of words. 
 
This encounter between Hezekiah and Sennacherib, king of Assyria, became a monumental turning point in the history of the nation. If they were taken away to another place and a foreign people were given this land, then all of God's promises would come to nothing. 
 
A great spiritual battle was unfolding in this story and there are many spiritual applications and life lessons that we should apply in how we respond when troubles come. 
 
I. In a War of Words – Abide in the Truth 
 
 The king of Assyria sent officials to Hezekiah to weaken and intimidate them in a war of words. 
 
 His opening strategy was straightforward; cause their faith in God to be shaken so fear would overtake them, and they would surrender without a fight. 
 
 Rabshakeh's challenge to their faith was in verse 22, “If you say to me, ‘We trust in Jehovah our God,’ well, didn’t Hezekiah take down His high places?” 
 
 The Jewish leaders asked Rabshakeh to speak in Aramaic rather than in Judean, but that only caused him to shout all the louder – in Judean. 
 
 Verse 30, “Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, ‘The Lord will surely deliver us, and the city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’” 
 
 This is the same strategy the enemy of your soul uses today. If he can shake your faith, if he can cause you to lose confidence in who God is in your life, then fear will defeat you. You’ll give up without a fight. 
 
A. The enemy gives empty promises 
 Notice the strategy, Rabshakeh tried to shake their confidence and faith in the Lord, he tried to strike fear in their hearts, and then tried to soothe those fears with promises of his own. But his promises were empty. 
 He promised that there would be peace, that he would move them to a place where they could feel at home, where there would be an abundance of good things, and that they would live and not die. 
 This is a strategy of the enemy today. He tries to convince people about how good life could be if they just surrendered to his plan for their lives. 
Illus – “Life will be so much more exciting over here. You’re missing out on all the fun, man! The world is where you can live it up, don’t worry, there’s no death here!” 
Illus - In the original sin of man, wasn't that the very strategy the serpent used with Eve?

A very well-known story is the story of Cinderella. The girl who has a loving father who marries a woman with two daughters. Then the father dies, and the stepmom becomes the evil stepmother with the evil stepdaughters. Eventually, they start to treat her like a slave in her own house. Her self-worth is broken down. Then something wonderful happens. She meets the prince who falls in love with her. The whole story of the glass slipper plays out and at the end, the evil stepmom is exposed, and she marries the prince. She gets a new identity and they live happily ever after. 
Every time I watch one or the other rendition of this story, I always ask myself: Why does she allow them to degrade her like that? Why doesn’t she stand up for herself and take what is rightfully hers? The problem is that she is powerless and has no authority. This affects her view of herself and her identity. 
In a similar way, people don’t know their identify and worth in Christ. Like the stepmom, the world and the enemy criticize people until it affects how they see themselves. If you think that you aren’t worth anything, you won’t expect much. You set the bar very low, and you will never reach for more. 
Illus. A man buys a ticket for a cruise. To save money he brings his own food. He sits in his room the whole cruise with his picnic basket. Bread grows stale. Captain informs him when he disembarks that he could have had the most wonderful food included in the cruise.

Christ has lavished us with spiritual riches that we cannot even fathom. 
1 Corinthians 2:9 but just as it is written, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.” 
We cannot hope for, believe for, or take hold of it if we don’t know about it. That is why I love the book of Ephesians. Especially the part we are getting into tonight. Paul begins by reminding them of who God is, and who they are in Christ. 
Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8which He lavished on us.

I. Your Identity is Set in Stone 
When you live your life without your identity being grounded in Christ, it can feel like you are walking on quicksand. You are never sure when you take the next step if it is going to be firm, or if you are going to sink. As Christians, Christ is our rock and foundation. If you have a wrong view of your identity, your foundation will be affected. 
Our identity is linked to what Christ did for us, because that reveals the worth he sees in us to us. There are a few key revelations we need to understand the riches we have in Christ. This will really ground our relationship and identity in Christ. 
A. Your identity is grounded on Grace 
The first word we should understand is ‘grace’. 
➢ Verse 2- Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 
➢ Paul’s prayer for them is that the grace and peace of Christ might become part of their spiritual walk. He will go on to expand what this grace looks like. But we should first define grace and peace. 
➢ Grace differs from mercy. Mercy is not getting the penalty for something you have done. Grace is getting something that you did not deserve or work for. That is unmerited favor.

This is a story of revival. We have recently been focusing on events taking place in the northern kingdom of Israel. There were many troubles and great spiritual darkness in the northern kingdom of Israel. But now, in 2 Kings 18, we turn to Judah, the kingdom of Israel in the south. 
 
The king of Judah was Hezekiah. He was 25 years old when he became king. We also know something about his father and mother which are an important part of the story. 
 
Hezekiah did right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done. That is a wonderful commendation. All kings in the south were compared to David, most did not follow after God like David. Not only that, but God gave Hezekiah the greatest of all commendations in verse 5 where it says that there was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among those who were before him. 
 
Hezekiah, therefore, was an exceptionally significant king in the history of Judah and there is much spiritual insight and many life lessons from a study of his life and leadership. 
 
There is a Hebrew word that is also an important part of this story. It's the Hebrew word Nahushtan. It’s a good word to know. This is one of those words you could use to make a beautiful plaque and hang it on your living room wall; then when your friends and family come to visit, they'll ask you what it means. “I’m glad you asked,” and then speak of this story. It’s about Jesus in a powerful way! 
 
This story is filled with spiritual application and life lessons. It’s a story of authentic and genuine revival. 
 
I. Revival is Made to be Lived 
 
 Revival is not just something that happens in the heart, if it’s true revival, it will impact how the life is lived. This you see in the life in Hezekiah. 
 
 God used Hezekiah to bring about a great revival in the nation of Israel in the south. He cleansed the temple, he restored the priesthood, and he kept the commandments which the Lord gave Moses. 
 
 What's amazing is that Hezekiah's father was the worst king the southern kingdom of Judah had seen. 
 
 That's a powerful testimony. We do not have to repeat the sins of our fathers. God can do a new work from one generation to another. The sins of the father do not have to be repeated. And if you've had a father who was less than a good example, then let the sins of the fathers be ended with you. 
 
 What's also interesting is that his mother was Avi, who was the daughter of Zechariah, a priest. A mother is also a very powerful influence in the lives of the children. Compare Avi to Jezebel and you'll see there's no comparison at all. 
 
 The name Avi means ‘my father.’ The name was given as a recognition of God as her father. That was quite rare in those days to have such a deep understanding. 
 
 Isaiah was the prophet in Judah at this time. Could Hezekiah's mother have arranged for Isaiah to mentor him? 
 
A. Do what’s right in the sight of the Lord 
 One of the first things that stand out in describing Hezekiah is that he did what was right in the sight of the Lord. 
 Compared to what? Hezekiah did what was right in the sight of the Lord, in contrast to what was right in his own eyes. In other words, if there was a difference between what was right in his own eyes versus what was right in God's eyes, then he would go with God's way. 
Proverbs 12:15, The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel. 
 
Proverbs 16:2, All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the Lord weighs the motives. 
Proverbs 21:2, Every man's way is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the hearts. 
 Verses 9 – 12 describe the final downfall of the northern kingdom of Israel. Why did they fall? Because they would not obey the voice of the Lord their God. 
 Why didn't they obey the voice of the Lord? After all, we know this about God's Word… 
1 John 5:3, For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

Our story unfolds in the northern kingdom of Israel. God had sent the prophet Elisha to make His power known and to call the people of Israel back to Himself. 
 
It was a time of great spiritual darkness in the kingdom of Israel in the north. One of the sons of Ahab was reigning as king and he was little better than Ahab. They had turned their back on Jehovah and were going after Baal, Molech, Ashtoreth, Chemosh, Astarte and others. As a result, they were growing weaker as a nation. 
 
But while the nation of Israel turned their back on God, He was continuing to make Himself known to them by demonstrating his power through Elisha, making known the promises of his Word to them, and giving them the warnings that their unfaithfulness would bring weakness and death to the nation. 
 
In 2 Kings 6, Israel found themselves in place of national weakness. The army of Aram had besieged Samaria, the capital of northern Israel. 
 
Besieging a city was a powerful tactic of war that could destroy an enemy without risking the lives of the soldiers. If it was successful, the city would be left intact, and the people destroyed within it. 
 
Under siege, the condition of things in the city of Samaria had become so desperate that a donkey's head was selling for 80 pieces of silver and two cups of dove's dung was selling for five shekels of silver, which seems like an extremely exorbitant price. This is what you could call inflation. 
 
This is an economic lesson, by the way, on the strength of nations. It’s important because inflation has recently been in the news. The rate of inflation is now approaching 10%, a 40 year high, and could likely get worse. Inflation is caused by an imbalance between supply and demand. Inflation is a monster and can quickly get out of control and decimate the economic strength of a nation. 
 
I believe economic trouble will contribute to the turmoil and turbulence leading into the latter days. We are seeing a shifting of power in the nations of the world. The economic troubles of the world will also increase as we draw nearer the latter days. 
 
It was in the midst of this terrible famine that God made an unbelievable promise. The famine would end overnight, and one measure of flour would sell for a shekel, and two measures of barley would sell for a shekel... by the next day! 
 
But as the story unfolds, it is filled with practical spiritual application and life lessons. 
 
I. Don’t Remain Outside of God’s Blessing 
 
 When you look at how difficult things had become for Israel, it leads you to ask, "How did this happen? How could it come to this? How could things decline and deteriorate to get to such a point?" 
 
 God speaks to this in the principles of his Word. First, there is the scriptural principle that the way of the transgressor is hard (Proverbs 13). 
 
 Second, they had turned their back on the Lord long before this. In other words, they had departed from God; therefore, they had removed themselves from the hand of God’s protection. 
 
A. Come to the point of turning 
 As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall a woman cried out to him for help. The king answered, “If Jehovah does not help you, from where shall I help you?” That much is certain, but he had much to learn. 
 When he heard the tragedy of these women, he tore his clothes, and behold, he had sackcloth beneath his royal robe. That sounds like humility; that is something right. But I suggest this is not the kind of humility that brings a man to the point of turning… for he immediately blamed God. 
 When he heard how bad things had become, he became angry, “Enough! I can take no more of this! May God do so to me and more also if the head Elisha remains on him today.” 
 In other words, he blamed Elisha, and therefore, he claimed God. This is deeply wrong. 
 If he was truly humble, instead of blaming the prophet, instead of blaming God, he could have asked for a meeting with Elisha and said, “My father, what shall we do?” That’s truly a ‘come to Jehovah meeting.'

I don’t know if you have seen this type of scenario in a movie: The character gets himself into a tight spot. Nowhere to run. Stuff is just going wrong. Then at some point he goes on his knees and say something like: “God, this is Joe. I haven’t spoken to You in a while, but it would be great if you could help me out with this problem. I promise I will try better next time. Oh yes, and please bless my family and help my sister be nicer to me. Amen.’ This might be an overly exaggerated example, but to some degree or another many people are stuck in this type of relationship with God. 
 
You might call this a ‘spare wheel’ Christian. Nowadays many people call themselves Christians. But what does it mean? We live in a “Christian” country. Some might say their parents were Christians and have basic Christian values. Still, when we look at the world around us, many people don’t know what it means to be a Christian, even though they might subscribe to the Christian faith. 
 
At some stage, though, you start to feel a tugging in your spirit. A feeling that there must be more. A hunger for something more genuine and authentic. 
 
In 2 Kings 4 we see a wonderful account written down between Elisha and the Shunammite woman. (From Shunam). In the Old Testament, the Spirit of God sporadically rested upon people, not as in the New Testament. There were specific persons though, who had the Spirit of God resting very heavily on them like the prophets. One such prophet was Elisha. 
 
When we think of the fact that Elisha was the representative of the nearness of God, we see some interesting typology and can learn some important principles from these encounters. 
 
At that time, it was a dark spiritual time in northern kingdom. During this dark time, there was something different and authentic about this woman. 
 
 
I. Make Room in Your Heart for God 
 Verse 10 – “Please, let us make a little walled upper chamber and let us set a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lampstand; and it shall be, when he comes to us, that he can turn in there.” 
 She wanted to do something for God, by doing something for the prophet. She wanted the presence of God nearer. She wanted to make room for him with her family. We see that she consulted her husband and the fact that it happened infers that they were in unity with the decision. 
A. God wants to be nearer 
Illus. - There is quite a difference between visiting for dinner and staying with someone for a longer time. While we had to isolate before our flight to America when our kids tested positive for covid, we had wonderful friends that were gracious enough for us to stay with them. An estimated 3 days became 10 days. When you visit, you put your best foot forward. Only best behaviour. But when you stay with someone, you let your hair down. The real person reveals itself with all the nuances of happiness, stress, irritation, etc. 
 If someone invites you to stay with them, you are also allowed into their inner sanctum. Their daily lives. That is what God wants. He doesn’t just want to see you in your ‘Sunday best’. He wants to be intimately acquainted with the joy, wondering, pain, questions, suffering, fears, and everything else that makes up your life. And He wants you to invite Him into it. 
 God wants to live with you, walk with you, go through the joy, irritations, and challenges of life with you, but many just want to visit Him on occasion. 
John 14:23, Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.” 
Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come into him and will dine with him, and he with Me.” 
 
 Many people accept Jesus as savior, but He is just a guest in the spare room they go and visit now and then.

God’s response to the spiritual darkness in Israel was to send the greatest prophets of the Old Testament, Elijah and Elisha. He sent them with a message of revival. God had not given up on them, He sent these prophets to call them back, to come back to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. “Why do you need the worldly gods of Baal, Ashtoreth, Molech or Astarte when you have the God of heaven and earth? Is there something wrong with Jehovah?” 
 
 Not only does God send Elijah and Elisha with the message of revival, He makes His power known yet again. He is the same God who defeated Egypt, who parted the sea and brought Israel through on dry ground. He fed them manna in the desert for those forty years, He redeemed them with his mighty hand and outstretched arm. 
 
 What followed was spiritual conflict. It was a battle for the minds and hearts of God’s people. Spiritual darkness was drawing them away from God because the gods of the world appealed to their flesh, but God sent His great prophets to appeal to their soul. That is the nature of spiritual warfare. 
 
The context of 2 Kings 6 is that Elisha was at that time the renown prophet of the Lord in the northern kingdom of Israel. Just before Elijah was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire, Elisha asked for a double portion of the spirit of Elijah. The story then unfolded as Elisha walked in the spirit and power of Elijah, He walked in the power of God. 
 
There are two stories of great significance in this chapter. These events demonstrated the power of God to Israel, but there also great spiritual applications and life lessons in these stories as well. 
 
Both stories have to do with potentially terrible tragedies, and each is answered by the hand of God moving through Elisha as God rescues and saves. God demonstrates that He is mighty to save, not by the power or might of man but by the Spirit of the living God. 
 
The first story is centered on one of the schools of the prophets Elijah had established near the Jordan River. The place where they were living was too small for them and they wanted to expand the school of the prophets. Tragedy strikes while they are cutting down trees for lumber. 
 
This was a spiritually dark time in Israel. Yet in a spiritually dark time, the sons of the prophets needed to expand their school. That right there should be encouraging. We are living in spiritually dark times today and it’s getting spiritually darker, but the Spirit of God is still moving on those whose hearts are turned toward Him. 
 
The sons of the prophets invited Elisha to go with them to the Jordan River to cut down trees and carve out beams for the building of a new and larger school. While they were hard at work, one of the axe heads flew off the handle and was lost in the Jordan River. 
 
I. Don’t Lose Your Cutting Edge 
 
 The axe head is the power of the instrument. Without that, it's just a stick of wood, without power, and without effect. 
 
 Imagine trying to cut down a tree with just the handle of the axe. There is no effect, there is no power without the head of the axe. 
 In the scriptures, and the Old Testament in particular, there are many symbols that teach of greater truths. Wood in the scriptures is a picture of man and of the flesh. 
 
 Jesus died on a wooden cross, Paul spoke of the deeds of the flesh as wood, hay and straw that would not survive the judgment of fire. 
 
 But this plain stick of wood with an ax head attached becomes very powerful. With it you can cut down a forest or build a house or carve a table to eat a meal. 
 
Illus - Many years ago when I was a youth director, we decided to do a fundraiser for a retreat by having the kids chop wood. We soon discovered just how powerful a stick of wood was with an axe head attached to it. 
 
A. Don’t neglect your spiritual life 
 An axe head doesn't fall off all at once, it loosens a little at a time, bit by bit, and then finally, after neglect, it flies off.

One of the most impactful verses in my life is in Philippians chapter 4 and the main reason I chose this text. If you have had a born-again experience, most likely you had an impactful person and/or a verse or two attached to those memories. 
 
Philippians 4 also contains probably the most misquoted verse in the world, v13. Most of you know this verse, ”I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” 
 
Ever noticed the misused context of this verse? 
All walks of life have used it or quoted it to indicate they were going to get something or accomplish something by claiming that verse gave them the power to expect personal success. 
 
In my case, during a time of searching and wondering about challenges in my life, a college co-ed, named Sherri told me, “you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.” 
 
Her intent, accurately, was to draw my attention to a relationship with the Lord, rather than lean on my own strength and understanding during the trials I was in. 
 
What is the true context of this verse? God wants our relationship with Him to be rich, regardless of our circumstances. Not measured by material things but the depth of our personal relationship with Him. 
 
Paul is telling us that we are rich already if we have a relationship with Christ! Paul himself doesn’t complain about Jail. He basically says I’m fine, God’s given me the jewel of contentment. 
 
More money has yet to bring contentment. Many will say, if only I get this or that, I’d be happy. But the end goal keeps moving and it’s never enough. 
 
Philippians 4:1-14 
 
I. Rejoice In The Lord Always 
 
Have you learned Paul’s secret in Philippians 4? 
How many of us have an attitude of contentment? 
 
Many live under constant stress. Paul’s secret, rejoice in the Lord always. 
 
The secret of contentment is certainly not money. 
Is it in relationships? We are all sinful and fall short so it’s unreasonable to think a relationship is going to fulfill all of our needs. Two sinful people in a fallen world. 
 
If you are not content, what is in the way? 
 
I’ve known many wealthy individuals. I’ve only known one who was content in their circumstances no matter what they had to deal with. 
It reminds me of the story of a boss who overhead his employee say, if I only had an extra $1000 I'd be happy…so the boss asked him about that and he said, yes, that was his opinion. So the boss handed him $1000. The employee, as he walked away said to himself, I should have asked for $2000. Isn’t that human nature? 
 
1 Timothy 6:6-10, But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it, either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 
 
A. A thankful heart provides contentment 
 
If people shoot for a certain level of affluence, when they reach that level, they often shoot for more. It just seems to go on and on.

More stuff does not bring more contentment. It actually brings the opposite unless, as Philippians 4:6 says, “do not be anxious about anything.”

One of the most impactful verses in my life is in Philippians chapter 4 and the main reason I chose this text.  If you have had a born-again experience, most likely you had an impactful person and/or a verse or two attached to those memories.

Philippians 4 also contains probably the most misquoted verse in the world, v13. Most of you know this verse, ”I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Ever noticed the misused context of this verse?
All walks of life have used it or quoted it to indicate they were going to get something or accomplish something by claiming that verse gave them the power to expect personal success.
