In the world of sports, there have been remarkable feats of courage, determination, and sheer grit that have stood out in the annals of history. 
Many sports have a Hall of Fame to recognize those who stand above the rest, those who accomplish feats of courage and endurance that deserve recognition. In baseball, there are such greats as Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Dizzy Dean, and Lou Gehrig. 
There are other greats you’ve probably never heard of. Hans Kammerlander, recorded the fastest ascent of Mount Everest, climbing the 29,000-foot summit in 16 hours 45 minutes – without extra oxygen. Diana Nyad swam 112 miles from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida - at almost 62 years of age. Dennis Kipruto Kimetto is the world record holder for the fastest marathon ever, running 26.2 miles in just over 2 hours. 
There is a hall of fame in the bible also. Actually, we call it the Hall of Faith. The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 also accomplished great feats, but the significance of what they accomplished is eternal. They were men and women that influenced the world around them because of their faith. They didn’t just believe; their faith became the driving force of their life. They relied on God in what they accomplished. 
They were ordinary people like you and me. They were not perfect, that’s for sure, but they believed God and it made all the difference in their lives and in the world around them. 
It’s interesting that though each of these people were common, ordinary sinners like you and me, there is no mention of their sin or their failures in this chapter. God gave them a second chance and what He celebrates, what He highlights, is the victory of their faith. 
It should remind us of Hebrews 10:17, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” The good news is that your story isn’t over either. If there are sins and failures in your life, you can get up and continue in faith and finish well and God will highlight and celebrate your victory in faith as well; and your sin and lawless deeds He will remember no more. 
People who are strong in faith are also people of influence. Instead of being drawn backward by the people around them, they grow stronger in their faith. They lead by example and they lead by their influence. They make a difference in the lives of others. 
That’s a great lesson. These heroes of faith inspire us to step up and be men of women of faith as well. These verses show us what living by faith looks like. 
I. These are the Days of Noah 
 The name Noah means ‘rest.’ His parents gave him that name saying, “This one shall give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands…” 
 Noah is not a picture of Jesus Christ; he is a picture of those who put their trust in Jesus. He is a picture of those who ‘rest’ in the work of salvation that God accomplished for them through the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son. 
 Noah’s Ark, however, is a symbol of Jesus Christ; He is a refuge from the gathering storm that will culminate in the judgment of the world. 
 Jesus is the Ark which saves. Only those who enter the ark will be saved. “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man comes to the Father but by Me,” Jesus said. 
A. God warns in advance 
 Verse 7 – By faith, Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen… became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. 
 God warned Noah in advance that judgment was coming upon the earth because the wickedness of man was great and every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 
 Jesus gave a similar warning in Matthew 24 -- that this will be a sign of the latter days; it will be like the days of Noah… 
Matthew 24:12, 37, “And because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold… For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah…” 
Acts 17:30-31, “God is now declaring that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Jesus from the dead.”

1. Happy New Year! Each New Year, we’re confronted by a question, “What do I want to change about my life?” 
 
ILLUS – Top Three New Year’s Resolutions. 
 
2. The obvious reason people want to change is because they don’t like what their lives have become; they want their lives to be different. 
3. But I think there is a better question for us to consider at the start of this New Year, “What does God want to change about my life?” 
4. You see, God has a plan for our lives; there is a reason why we are here. 
5. This means there are things that God wants to change about us because He knows what’s best for us, and what’s best for us is to live according to the pattern He purposed for us when He created us. 
6. We only get one shot at this thing called “life,” so we need to know what God wants to change about us and what God wants to do through us so that we may go and do His will. 
 
Matthew 6:10, Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 
 
7. But many people also wonder, “What is God’s will for my life? What does God want me to do with my life?” 
8. During our study, we will discover God’s plan and purpose for our lives. 
9. God is still calling people and He is still asking, “Who will go?” 
10. My prayer is that after this message, all of us will say, “Lord, Send Me!” 
 
Isaiah 6:1-8 
 
Transition – Before we can say, “Lord, Send Me,” we need God to change our vision of who God is. What I mean is. . . 
 
I. We Need a Biblical Vision of God (1-4) 
 
A. God is King (1) 
1. Uzziah became Judah’s king when he was sixteen and he reigned fifty-two years. 
 (2 Chronicles 26) 
2. Uzziah walked uprightly before God and Judah was blessed under his leadership. 
a. Judah prospered financially. 
b. Judah was secure with fortified cities. 
c. Judah had military success, possessing an elite army of over 307,000 soldiers. 
3. But when Uzziah died Judah felt exposed and vulnerable. 
a. Perspective: the U.S. has had ten presidents in the last fifty-two years. 
b. Isaiah the prophet also felt insecure, so God gave him a vision. 
4. Isaiah “saw the Lord.” 
a. “Lord”, Adonai means “sovereign,” “master.” 
b. “sitting on a throne” reveals that God is the King of kings. 
c. “lofty and exalted” means God is transcendent and eternal. 
d. “train of His robe filling the temple” speaks of God’s majesty. 
5. What was God’s message to Isaiah? 
6. Judah’s throne was vacant, but the throne of heaven was occupied; it was then, it is now, and it always will be. 
7. The Apostle John declared that Isaiah saw Jesus Christ seated on the throne; a preincarnate appearance of God the Son. 
 
John 12:41, These things Isaiah said, because he saw His glory, and he spoke of Him. 
 
APPL – During these troubling days, you may feel exposed and vulnerable. 
• God does not want you to feel that way. 
• God does not want you to remain in a place of insecurity. 
• The remedy for our insecurity is a biblical vision of God, like Isaiah. 
• Do not trust in princes. 
• Look to God. He is our help and our hope. 
 
Psalm 146:3-5, 10, Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. How blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God; the Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord! 
 
Transition – The next thing we must understand about God before we can say, “Lord, Send Me” is. . . 
 
B. God is holy (2-4) 
1. The seraphim are only mentioned here in the Bible. 
a. The word “seraphim” means “to burn.” 
b. Seraphim burn in their zeal for God. 
2. Seraphim have interesting anatomy, they have six wings. 
a. Two wings cover their eyes which means they are forever reverent before God. 
b. Two wings cover their feet which means they are forever submitted to God. 
c. Two wings to fly which means they are forever serving God. 
3. And the seraphim forever proclaim the excellencies of God; continually calling out to one another from worshipful hearts.

Let’s be honest, we are living at a time in our nation that’s not as friendly or safe or healthy as it once was. 
People in America are met with all sorts of international conflict or health challenges, the only thing consistent is the inconsistency of the messages. Many are filled with fear - minimally they make us weary. 
Surveys tell us three of four Americans feel less safe than a year ago. Major cities are overrun with lawless-ness, international tensions have returned to some historical lows. In the US, people have left certain states in droves for all kinds of reasons - many attached to crime, politics, taxes or pandemic mandates. 
Here we are launching into 2022 together and I suggest there’s no better time to go out and show people there is a living God in charge, that when we walk with Him, there is calm and serenity and peace attached. 
All of us should be able to help create a platform in our circles, in this city, that tells people what makes us different. 
Jesus runs our lives and if we are in obedience to Him, nothing brings us fear. We cannot let fear and uncertainty steal our joy or compromise our faith. 
The life of the Apostle Paul - what a great example and teacher for us to grasp this whole concept of having a place of refuge in the Lord Jesus Christ. 
We have to look at these times not as Americans, but as followers of Jesus. What does the Bible say to us, what does the Lord say to us about our personal safety as followers of Jesus? 
If you find yourself uneasy these days or a little frightened, you have come to the right place. 
Background for Acts 
Paul has been to Philippi, to Thessalonica, to Berea - he’s preached in each one of these places - led thou-sands to Christ, started churches - then went south to the city of Athens, where he preached to the intellectual elite of the ancient Roman world, now he’s in Corinth where you see that he goes to the Synagogue in town every sabbath - sharing the truth that Jesus was the Messiah. 
Acts 18:6-11 
I. “Do Not Be Afraid” 
• These unbelievers want to do battle with Paul - the unbelieving Jews - a powder keg topic - Paul’s safety is in serious jeopardy but his refuge is firmly planted in the Lord. 
• God comes to him in a vision and says do not be afraid - stay and preach - Do we not face these same choices Paul did? 
1) Follow God’s will for our life. 
2) Worry about conflict for the sake of the Gospel? 
• And he then stayed another 1.5 years 
A. Develop a Godly mindset 
Apostle Paul had a mindset on how he lived his life - not about personal comfort or safety - Priority was on being where God wanted him to be and doing what God wanted him to do. 
Question was not where are the threats to avoid, but what is the will of God so I can walk in it. He considered personal threats as trivial, as long as he was where God wanted him to be and doing what God wanted him to do. 
He talks about this later in Acts 20, talking to the Elders at the church of Ephesus; 
Acts 20:24, But I do not consider my life of any ac-count as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of God’s grace.

1. It is unnerving to feel or be unprepared. 
2. And, when it comes to our lives and what happens after this life is over, it’s important for us to know God’s heart for us, that He doesn’t want us to be unprepared for the moment we stand in His presence. 
3. In fact, from John 1:19-34 we will discover what God has done to help us prepare for that moment, how He has, in essence, made “straight the way,” so that we will be ready and joyful when we behold God for the first time. 
 
John 1:19-34 
 
Context 
1. Two weeks ago, we started a new study through the Gospel of John. 
2. During our study of John 1:1-13, we noted how John boldly declared that Jesus is eternally God the Son, the Agent and Sustainer of Creation, the Life and the Light of men. 
3. Then during our study of John 1:14-18, we noted that John also declared that Jesus Christ is fully human. 
 
John 1:14, And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us. . . 
 
4. This means that Jesus Christ has two natures, divine and human, which were joined into one being, so that He is fully God and fully man. 
5. This doctrine is called the hypostatic union, the joining of Jesus’ two natures. 
6. This is an essential doctrine of the historic Christian faith. 
a. If Jesus is not fully God, then we do not have a perfect, sinless Savior whose life is of infinite worth to pay the penalty for the sins of the world. 
b. And, if Jesus is not fully man, then we do not have a Savior because He could not truly identify with fallen humanity and represent us on the Cross at Calvary to pay the penalty for our sins. 
c. But since Jesus is fully God and fully man, we have a Savior, One who represents God to us and us to God. 
7. Which bring us once again to the Apostle John’s purpose in writing his Gospel. . . 
 
John 20:31, but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that 
believing you may have life in His name. 
 
8. In keeping with the purpose of his Gospel, the Apostle John next introduces us to the first of seven eyewitnesses in his Gospel who testify to Jesus Christ being the Son of God; his name was John the Baptist. 
9. John the Baptist is a unique figure in the Bible because he is mentioned in all four Gospels. 
10. Since John the Baptist plays such a significant role in the Gospels, it is important for us to understand who John the Baptist was and his testimony about Jesus Christ. 
 
Transition – First, when it comes to who John the Baptist was, it is important to note that. . . 
 
I. John Prepared the Way for Messiah 
 
• God promised Israel that He would raise up prophets, like Moses, to lead His people after Moses died. 
 
Deuteronomy 18:18, I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 
 
• God faithfully raised up prophet after prophet to direct Israel just as He had promised. 
• But that all changed after the prophet Malachi; there were four hundred years of silence because God did not raise up a prophet for Israel. 
• Now, God warned Israel that this was going to happen through the prophet Amos for he prophesied about a period of silence over three hundred years before it happened. 
 
Amos 8:11, “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “When I will send a famine on the land, not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, but rather for hearing the words of the LORD, But they will not find it.” 
 
• What was God’s purpose in not sending a prophet to Israel for four hundred years? 
ILLUS – The “Silent Treatment” is unnerving. 
 
APPL – So God was quiet for four hundred years because Israel was not listening to His prophets. 
• In many ways, there was a divine message in the heavenly silence. 
• What was God’s message? “Listen to My prophets!” 
• You see, God does not play games with us. 
• There is too much at stake when it comes to the eternal destiny of every soul that has been made in God’s image. 
 
Transition – What were some of the last prophetic words that Israel heard through the prophet Malachi?

1. It is unnerving to feel or be unprepared. 
2. And, when it comes to our lives and what happens after this life is over, it’s important for us to know God’s heart for us, that He doesn’t want us to be unprepared for the moment we stand in His presence.
3. In fact, from John 1:19-34 we will discover what God has done to help us prepare for that moment, how He has, in essence, made “straight the way,” so that we will be ready and joyful when we behold God for the first time.

This is a weary world. It’s been almost two years of dealing with this pandemic. People are truly tired and tired of it, just in time for new variant to arise. But God has sustained us, and He will never leave us nor forsake us. He promises to walk with us through every trial and tribulation. Even if you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, do not fear, for God is with you. And if God is for you, who can be against you? 
 
 But the world is wearied not just from the pandemic, but also by so many other conditions and events in the world. The nation is more divided than ever, anger and animosity loom just under the surface. Russia has amassed troops on the border with Ukraine bringing Europe to the precipice of a great conflict. China’s heavy hand is a growing concern as it exerts its will over the world. Iran is one step away from developing a nuclear weapon. 
 
 You’re probably wondering, “Where are you going with all this? Great job, pastor, I brought friends and now you’re depressing all of us.” Here’s my point, the world was also weary when God sent His Son into the world; to a dry and weary land where there is no water. Rome was oppressing the world and poverty and hardship were everywhere. 
 
 That’s why the theme of Christmas is rejoicing. When God sends light into the darkness, when the hopeless find hope, when the weary are strengthened, it’s time to rejoice. 
 
 If you think about it, all the traditions of Christmas have something to do with rejoicing. Lights and candles, beautifully wrapped gifts, songs of celebration, bells on bobtails that ring, making spirits bright, eggnog, hot chocolate, candy canes and Christmas carols. They’re all traditions of Christmas that bring joy in the darkest part of the year. 
 
Cultures around the world have Christmas traditions that speak of rejoicing. Although some are rather interesting. 
 
 In Japan, the traditional Christmas dinner is Kentucky Fried Chicken. That would make anyone rejoice! This is so popular in Japan that families must make reservations well in advance to be certain they’ll have KFC on Christmas Day. 
 
 In Finland, it’s tradition to visit a cemetery over Christmas. Graveside candles are lit; entire cemeteries are lighted. Three-fourths of all Finnish families visit a cemetery at Christmas, mostly on Christmas Eve. Special traffic arrangements are needed to handle the crowds. 
 
 If you think about it, there’s a beautiful and powerful message behind the Finland tradition of visiting a cemetery on Christmas Eve. God sent His Son to conquer death and give eternal life to all who trust in Him. So, yes, putting lights in cemeteries is a beautiful picture of a powerful truth! 
 
In Hawaii, the tradition is to eat Spam on Christmas. Which, I’m sure brings joy to them, but as for me, I have a spam filter, so, no Spam for me. 
 
In Venezuela, people go to Christmas Eve service on roller skates. So many people roller skate to church on Christmas Eve they close the streets. Which gives new meaning to the expression ‘holy rollers.’ 
 
And of course, who could forget our own American tradition of Christmas fruitcake? It’s kind of an ironic to call it fruitcake, however, because it is neither fruity nor cakey. However, fruitcake has a rich history. It was originally used by Roman soldiers as MREs, or “meals ready-to-eat” because they could hold so much nutrition without spoiling. Eventually it became a gift of royalty and is even today served at Royal weddings in England. Tradition has it that fruitcake was brought over by the pilgrims. I think people are still passing on the same fruitcakes they had on the Mayflower. Interestingly, so-called Figgie Pudding is actually fruitcake. When carolers sing, “So bring us the Figgie Pudding,” they’re actually demanding fruitcake! 
 
 We must be careful, however, that traditions don’t replace the meaning and message of why God sent His Son. The world is weary and needs hope.
