Why did God become man? 
2. Did God become man because the Second Person of the holy Trinity had an opening in His busy schedule? 
3. Or did God become man because God the Son felt bored wanted to try something new? 
4. Why did God become man? Was it really necessary? 
5. Yes, the Incarnation was necessary, and tonight, we will unpackage the “Why” behind God becoming man in order to discover the wisdom and grace of God’s plan. 
6. My prayer is that after our study, we will never look at Christmas or for that matter, life itself, the same way again. 
 
John 1:14-18 
 
Context 
1. Last week we embarked on a new study through the Gospel of John. 
2. During our study of the first thirteen verses from John chapter one, we noted that John boldly declared that Jesus is eternally God the Son, the Agent and Sustainer of Creation, the Life and the Light of men. (1-4) 
3. After establishing the eternal deity of Jesus, John turned to another facet of the person of Jesus Christ, His humanity in verse fourteen. 
 
John 1:14, And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us. . . 
Transition – In order to understand the “Why?” behind John 1:14, we must turn to Genesis 1. From Genesis 1 we learn that. . . 
 
I. “God with Us” is God’s Eternal Plan for Us 
 
• What I mean is, God created us in order to have a relationship with us. 
• And in that place of intimate relationship with Adam and Eve, God generously blessed the first couple. 
 
Genesis 1:27-30, God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it. . .” Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you. . . I have given 
every green plant for food”; and it was so. 
 
APPL – You see, contrary to popular opinion, God did not create us because He needed someone to pick up His dirty socks or weed the Garden of Eden. 
• Nor did God create us because He wanted someone to bully, accuse, threaten, or abuse. 
• God created us to have a relationship with us, an eternal, loving, blessed relationship. 
• This is God’s heart for us, to bless us forever. 
• This means the greatest blessing that God gave to us is Himself; the personal invitation to have a secure, intimate relationship with God. 
 
Psalm 73:28, But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all Your works. 
 
A. But there was a Problem in Paradise 
1. One of the blessings that the Lord God gave man is a free will, the freedom to choose the course of one’s life. 
2. As a free-will moral agent, Adam was free to choose the good that God intended for his life, or not. 
3. This means Adam was free to choose the blessings of the Lord’s presence as he served in the Garden with a worshipful, obedient heart, or he could disobey God and serve and worship something or someone other than the Lord God. 
4. One’s choice reveals one’s will. 
 
APPL – This is a critical point for us to grasp because it helps us understand why we are the way we are and, frankly, why our world is such a mess. 
 
5. As I said, the Lord God gifted Adam, and all his children, with a free will; we are free-will moral agents. 
6. Then the Lord God gave the first man the opportunity to exercise his free will when He placed Adam in paradise, the Garden of Eden, and issued one positive and one negative command. . . 
Genesis 2:16-17, From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die. 
7. Both trees, the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, were located in the middle of the Garden.

Sometimes life gets heavy. It feels like the weight of the world is weighing you down. Difficulties and challenges build up and accumulate, and discouragement sets in. 
 
What do you do when you get discouraged? Discouragement can lead to depression. It comes from seeing the circumstances as overwhelming, they’re more than you can handle. When it seems your problems are larger than you. 
 
The more important question, however, is, what does God do? The life lessons from this story can apply directly to your life if you are feeling weighted down and discouraged. If that is not your situation now, these life lessons are important to remember for the future. Everyone will go through great challenges and difficulties in life. 
 
Elijah has come to the lowest point of his life. Here, he’s without a compass. He’s lost his bearing. He’s faltering. He is running without instruction. He’s downhearted and discouraged. 
 
Elijah had just come from the highest point of victory just before he reached this lowest low. If you come to the point where you reach your lowest low, please know that God never fails. His grace is more than enough. 
 
Elijah was living in spiritually dark times and there was much spiritual warfare. The northern kingdom of Israel was led by the worst king Israel had ever known, King Ahab. Not only did he walk in the sins of his fathers, but he also married that wicked woman Jezebel. He led the nation to follow the false gods of Baal and Ashtoreth and to turn their back on Jehovah, the God of Israel. In other words, the nation was falling apart; the world was falling apart it seemed. 
 
God called Elijah to be a prophet. It’s no easy task being a prophet of God in a time when the nation was turning their back on God and following the gods of the world. 
 
They trusted in Baal the god of fertility and rain, so Elijah declared there would be no rain in Israel until he gave the word. God meant for Israel to be a land of blessing; flowing with milk and honey, but God also said that if their hearts turned hard, so would the land. 
 
At the end of 3 1/2 years of no rain, with Israel suffering a devastating drought, Elijah confronted Ahab and directed him to bring 450 prophets of Baal to Mt. Carmel and to gather all the people of Israel there as well. 
 
When all the people assembled, Elijah declared, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If Jehovah is God, then follow Him; if Baal be God, then follow him.” Elijah then challenged the prophets of Baal to call upon Baal to answer by fire and consume the sacrifice there on that mountain and that whichever God answered by fire, he is God. Only Jehovah answered by fire that day, so Elijah commanded that the 450 prophets of Baal be seized and were slain there at the brook Kishon. 
 
When Jezebel heard what happened on Carmel, she answered with some wrath of her own. She sent a messenger to tell Elijah he would be killed the next day. That was when Elijah hit his lowest low. He ran for his life. As I mentioned last week, Elijah had no reason to run. Jezebel was the one who had reason to be afraid. So she thought to intimidate him, to contain him. And it worked. 
 
Alone in the desert he prayed that God would take his life. He had had enough. He couldn’t take anymore. He was burned out, tired, intimidated, discouraged, and depressed. 
 
God’s response to Elijah is a life lesson unto itself. God answered with compassion. Instead of rebuking Elijah, he fulfilled 2 Corinthians 7:6, "God comforts the depressed.” He ministered to Elijah. He let him sleep and eat. 
 
After comforting and strengthening Elijah it was time to instruct him. God doesn’t just comfort you through a dark or difficult time, He doesn’t just walk with you, He wants to teach you through it. The message and instruction God had for Elijah was a message filled with instruction for us.

ILLUS – Who is the most influential person in history? 
 
1. If you could travel back in time, to any period, and meet any person who is historically significant, who would you want to meet? 
2. Tonight, as we embark on a new study through the Gospel of John, I am going to share with you why Jesus of Nazareth is the most influential person in all of human history, what we need to know about Jesus. 
3. And at the end of my message, I am going to give you the opportunity to know Jesus personally because, as we will discover, to know Jesus is to know God. 
 
John 1:1-13 
 
Context 
1. The Gospel of John is one of the most beloved books of the Bible for in it we learn about Jesus Christ in a more personal, intimate way. 
2. The Gospel was written by the Apostle John, the son of Zebedee, the brother of James. (Matthew 10:2) 
3. John was a fisherman by trade who lived in Capernaum and fished on the Sea of Galilee. 
4. John was one of the Twelve Apostles (Mark 3:17) and was in Jesus’ inner circle which included Peter, James, and John. (Mark 5:37-38; 9:2-3; 14:33) 
5. James and John were quite the dynamic duo. 
a. Jesus called them “The Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17), perhaps because they requested permission from Jesus to “call down fire from heaven to consume” the Samaritans for their failure to welcome Jesus. (Luke 9:53-54) Jesus rebuked them and denied their request. 
b. James and John also upset the other Ten Apostles when the brother’s mom asked Jesus to grant that her boys sit next to Him on His throne, one at His left and the other at His right. Again, it appears the request was denied. At the very minimum, no divine promise was given. (Matthew 20:20-28) 
6. In spite of these character shortcomings, Jesus loved John and John knew His Savior’s heart for him. 
a. John openly confessed that he was beloved by Jesus. (John 21:7) 
b. During the Last Supper, it was John who was seated next to Jesus and reclining on His chest, asked our Lord for clarification as to who would betray Him. (John 13:23-24) 
c. And when Jesus Christ was on the Cross at Calvary, dying for our sins, He turned to John, the “disciple whom He loved,” and told him to look after His mother, Mary, saying, “Behold, your mother!” John testified that “From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.” (John 19:26-27) 
7. It was John who outran Peter to the tomb after some women told them, early that Resurrection Sunday morning, that Jesus’ tomb was empty. (John 20:1-7) 
a. John testified that Jesus’ tomb was empty and believed the women’s report. 
b. But he also confessed that Peter and John did not understand the significance of the empty tomb because “they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.” (John 20:8-9) 
8. After Jesus Christ ascended to heaven and was seated at that right hand of God the Father (Mark 16:19), John became one of the leadership pillars of the Jerusalem. (Galatians 2:9) 
9. Eventually, John settled in Ephesus and ministered at the church founded by the Apostle Paul. (Acts 19) 
10. According to Church history, John wrote this Gospel while living in Ephesus, thus making the Ephesian Church the first recipients of this Gospel. 
11. John would go on to write three Epistles, 1, 2, and 3 John along with the Book of Revelation while exiled on the Isle of Patmos. 
12. The date for the writing of the Gospel of John is between 85-95 AD. 
13. John does not mince words when he declared the purpose for his Gospel. In fact, it can be summarized by one word, “believe.” 
 
John 20:31, but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. 
 
14. When someone believes Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, they receive life in His name. 
a. But how can we be sure Jesus is the Christ? 
b. How can we be certain that Jesus is the Son of God? 
c. And how can we be sure that believing in Jesus will mean that we will have life, eternal life, in His name?

A.W. Tozer, famous pastor and author, wrote a message on the transforming power of love. It has everything to do with the life lessons that come to us out of the story of King Solomon. 
 
 “We are all in process of becoming,” Tozer wrote. “We have moved from what we were to what we now are and are moving toward what we shall be. Not only are we in process of becoming; we are becoming what we love. We are to a large degree the sum of our lives and we will of moral necessity grow into the image of what we love most. Our loves change, mold, and transforms us. 
 
 “What we love, therefore, is no small matter. Rather, it is of present, critical, and everlasting importance. It is prophetic of our future. It tells us what we shall be, and so predicts accurately our eternal destiny. 
 
 “Think of the power that turned a pink cheeked little boy into a Nero or a Himmler. Was Jezebel always the accursed woman of evil? No, when she was little, she dreamed with girlish delights, but at some point, she became interested in evil and worldly things, then admired them, and then went on to love them. Thus Jezebel, like clay in the potter’s hand, was slowly turned into what she became.” 
 
 What we love therefore is of everlasting importance. Love is a transforming power. This truth has everything to do with the life lessons from Solomon’s story. 
 
Solomon was quite young when he became king. He started well. We read in chapter 3 that Solomon loved the Lord, though not as much as David his father did. We also read that God appeared to Solomon in a dream and allowed Solomon to ask for whatever he wished. 
 
Solomon asked God to give him an understanding heart. He asked for wisdom to be able to judge the people of Israel, to be able to discern right from wrong; good from evil, because he knew that he was insufficient, that he was inadequate for what he was called to do. 
 
God was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom and promised to give Solomon what he had not asked for; that Solomon would have riches and honor greater than all the kings in his day. Ephesians 3:20, "Now unto Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us," 
 
The honor God gave Solomon, and the greatness of his kingdom became famous throughout the known world. People came from many nations to hear the wisdom of Solomon and were amazed at all he had built. The Queen of Sheba is one of those who came and was amazed at what she saw and heard. 
 
There was so much gold in the kingdom of Solomon that silver was considered commonplace. He had a throne made of ivory, overlaid with gold, with two great lions standing on each side. There were six steps leading up to his throne with a lion on each side of each step, 12 lions in all. He had 500 shields of gold hanging in his throne room, the hall of judgment. 
 
One thing God did not promise to give Solomon, however, was many wives; he collected foreign women like some collect foreign cars. That was the compromise that led to the great tragedy that became Solomon’s life. There are many life lessons from the story. 
 
I. What You Love is Prophetic 
 
 Verse 1-2 – King Solomon loved many foreign women from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the sons of Israel, “You shall not associate with them, for they will surely turn your heart away after their gods.” Solomon held fast to these in love. 
 
 Despite all the wisdom Solomon was given, he didn't always live by that wisdom. Having wisdom and using wisdom may be very different things. 
 
 For what Solomon did not see or understand is that what you love is prophetic of your future. Solomon held fast to these in love.
