In the early chapters of 1 Kings, David is advanced in years and declares his son Solomon to be the new king of Israel. Shortly after, he breathes his last and Solomon is firmly established as king of Israel. 
 
 Solomon was David’s son born to Bathsheba with whom he had had an adulterous relationship and then later married. This speaks of the grace of God in not only forgiving David, but also in allowing a son from this relationship to sit on the throne of Israel. 
 
The name Solomon means, “peaceable.” This was the name David gave to him. But God also gave him a name. He called him, Jedediah, which means, “loved of God.” The fact that God called him Jedediah is another declaration of the grace of God. 
 
Solomon is famous for building the temple of God in Jerusalem in all its glory, as we will soon see. Solomon is also famous for his wisdom. 
 
If you were to assign one word to describe Solomon, no doubt it would be the word wisdom. The “wisdom of Solomon” is famous. 
 
If people who knew you well could describe you in one word, what would that word be? Would it be grace? Would it be wisdom? Would it be faith? May God give you a name that has His honor and character attached to it. 
 
Proverbs 22:1, A good name is to be more desired than great wealth. 
 
How did Solomon get such wisdom? It’s an important question. The answer is that wisdom comes from God. 
 
Shortly after Solomon was anointed king of Israel, God appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Ask what you wish me to give you.” Solomon did not ask for long life, nor for great riches, nor for the life of his enemies. Above all else, he wanted wisdom to be able to judge the people of Israel, to discern between good and evil. 
 
Wisdom is a right thing to desire. Many, in their daily devotions, read a proverb. Since there are 31 Proverbs, it works very well. Why read Proverbs every day? To gain wisdom. 
 
If we were to do a show of hands and ask, how many desire to have not just more wisdom, but great wisdom? Many would raise their hands. The desire for wisdom is a right desire. 
 
I. We Need the Wisdom that Comes from God 
 
 Verse 1 - Solomon formed a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and took Pharaoh's daughter to become his wife. 
 
 This is an example of man’s wisdom. This was commonly done by kings of nations in that day. It was considered wise and prudent. It was politically savvy. 
 
 It may have been politically savvy, but it was spiritually disastrous. And there we gain great insight. It’s a life lesson. 
 
 There is a vast difference between the so-called wisdom of the world and the wisdom that comes from God. 
 
A. The world’s wisdom is foolishness to God 
 Solomon was doing what many kings did in that day. It was considered wise because it built alliances. 
 But God had said in His word that this was not good, because it would draw the king's heart away from God. 
 What we know of Solomon's life is that this was just the beginning. Solomon took many wives for himself and ultimately it led to great trouble in his life. 
1 Kings 11:1-2, Now King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the sons of Israel, “You shall not associate with them, nor shall they associate with you, for they will surely turn your heart away after their gods.” Solomon held fast to these in love. 
 God's wisdom is proven right. There is a way that seems right to men, but God's ways are better because God’s way leads to life. 
Proverbs 14:12, There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. 
 God has much to say about marriage that is wise. 
2 Corinthians 6:14, Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 
Ephesians 5:25, Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her…

My experience in 60 years and over 40 following Je-sus, is that sooner or later we all encounter troubles, heartaches, situations that challenge us to the core, that even threaten to overwhelm our faith. 
We are living in days where highly credentialed medical professionals suggest that stress and anxiety is fast becoming the number one cause of death. 
One of the most famous conversations in the Bible Jesus had with anyone - in Matthew 26:31-35. 
Peter said, Lord….I will never fall away… 
A most boastful declaration by any man and we know it ended with a catastrophic personal failure in Peter’s life. A failure that shook him to the core and almost causes his faith to collapse. 
This is what we are going to talk about because Je-sus is going to tell Peter three (3) important facts about his troubles that are going to enable him to endure and get through it and survive it in a biblical Christlike way. 
His lessons for Peter are meant for us now. 
Background - Passover meal, the Seder with His disciples the night before He was betrayed. In just a few hours from Luke 22 Peter is going to experience the failure we just talked about; deny the Lord 3x and then in shame he’s going to slip away and quit the ministry and go back to fishing. 
But prior to all this look what Jesus tells him. 
Luke 22:31 
I. God’s Authority Is Over All 
Peter, Satan himself is asking My permission to sift you - nobody asks permission from someone who has less authority than they have… 
We only ask permission from someone who has more authority, a greater authority and a higher authority than we have. 
So you have to ask yourself, who in the universe has more authority, higher authority than the very prince of demons himself - we know the answer is only almighty God. 
The devil had to ask Jesus for permission to act against Peter - yet one more proof that Jesus really is Jehovah God in the flesh, exactly as He claimed to be. 
What did Satan ask of Jesus; Jesus said Satan asked to sift you like wheat? 
• Ancient days - farmers would take wheat grain, hard grain, put in a machine called a sifter and grind it over and over until soft clean flower was the result. 
• Satan was asking to crush Peter into flower - us-ing his fears to deny the Lord, then the shame and embarrassment that followed - that he would get him to give up spiritually and quit the ministry and go back to fishing. 
Luke 22:32 
Clear that Jesus has granted Satan’s request and he’s coming after Peter to destroy him - To eliminate him permanently as a servant of Christ. 
A. Trials may sift us but God restores us 
Jesus says right here it’s going to be rough, but your faith will not fail, you will recover, you will return, and when you do, use what you learned from this sifting experience to encourage and strengthen the people of God. 
Satan got Peter to deny Jesus. Peter left broken. Peter went back to fishing…but in John chapter 21, Jesus came after Peter and He revitalized his faith, removed his guilt, restored him to the ministry and he went on to be a mighty servant of God whose NT sermons and letters still strengthened the hearts of God’s people even to this very day. 
 
God protects us, He is the strongman

What is the key to doing well when you’re in the thick of a great trouble? Life is filled with troubles; Jesus said the same in John 16, “In this world you will have tribulation, but take courage, I have overcome the world.” 
 
 That is the key to doing well when you’re in the thick of a great trouble. To take courage, knowing that He has overcome the world. He will walk with you in that trouble and will bring you through to the other side. 
 
 There are troubles that come because we live in a troubled and broken world. There are troubles that come because of afflictions and distresses brought by others against us, and there are troubles of our own making. 
 
 The troubles of our own making are often the most difficult to understand how to respond to. It’s common for people to just assign themselves to the trouble, “After all, I deserve all this, I did this to myself. I’ll just have to endure it.” 
 
 How does God see it? Does God look at those troubles, the troubles of our own making, and say, “Don’t come to Me looking for help, you made this mess, and you can just clean it up.” I submit that God does not respond that way. 
 
 One of the things I have always loved about the Lord is that He doesn’t leave us in times of trouble, even troubles of our own making. The key is to fully trust God in those troubles, to call out to Him to help and to save. 
 
 You see this as well in the life of David. He was doing so well, but then made tragic choices that brought epic consequences. How David responded is a life lesson for us. He fully trusted God to rescue and save… 
 
Psalm 32:5-7, I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”; and You forgave the guilt of my sin… You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. 
 
The consequences of David’s failures began to be seen in his family. His son, Amnon, raped his half-sister, Tamar, but David, paralyzed by his own sin, took no action. Finally, Tamar's brother, Absalom, took matters into his own hands and arranged for Amnon's death. Absalom then fled the country and was banished for three years while David again took no action. 
 
Finally, David extended mercy to Absalom and had him brought back to Jerusalem but would not see his face. For two more years bitterness built up in Absalom’s heart. Finally, Absalom pleaded to see David's face and when David agreed to see him, David kissed Absalom in full reconciliation. 
 
But it was too late. Absalom decided to conspire against David. He provided for himself the chariots and horses, and 50 men as runners before him. Giving the appearance he was a mighty warrior though he had never fought in a single battle. 
 
He positioned himself at the gate of the city and began to win the favor of the people of Israel. When the time was right, he set up headquarters in Hebron and prepared to launch a coup d’état. He fully intended to overthrow David and make himself the king of Israel. 
 
When David got word how deep this conspiracy was, he realized he must leave Jerusalem to spare it from the calamity of war. That is where we pick it up in chapter 15. 
 
David was facing the greatest trouble of his life; this is his darkest hour. But here is where we learn great lessons for ourselves. You may find yourself going through a time of great trouble, and it may even be the consequences of your own doing, but these are great life lessons to receive, for they shall surely help in time of need. 
 
I. Never Quit, Never Give up on God 
 
 Sometimes when people encounter troubles, especially troubles of their own making, they give up on God, either because they think God has given up on them, or they’re angry at God for allowing the trouble to come in their lives in the first place. 
 
 One of the things to appreciate about David is that he never quits, he never gives up, he believes in God, even in the troubles he brought on himself.
