The opening of the Red Sea was possibly the single greatest act of God in the Old Testament… 
When you read these amazing stories in the Bible, and the miracles is that all you see? Or do you read them and consider what spiritual lesson God may have for you? 
This biblical account reminds us once again that God knows what He is doing. Do we have confidence in that truth? In the times we are living, I can’t tell you how often Christians wonder out loud, “God, where are you? Yet the scriptures re-mind us that His ways are not our ways, in the book of Isaiah among others. 
Fear and the feeling of being trapped in our circumstances are so discouraging and perhaps some of you are in this place today. 
Psalm 23:4; Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 
When you couple fear with anxiety, the result often can cause a rational person to respond irrationally. 
A most difficult year continues to swirl around us - more conflict between people on every opinion voiced. 
Some are saying, we’ll know it’s ok when “they say” so - what do you mean, when “they say”? It’s ok to walk by faith right now - trust the Lord, not what “they” say. 
In Exodus 14 we have a people, millions of people stuck in fear at the Red Sea following a man who told the most powerful leader in Egypt to “Let my people go.” 
I. Confidence Provided By God Alone 
God performs three miracles on behalf of the Israelites. 
1. v19 - God moved the pillar of cloud and blocked the Egyptians way. 
• v20 - Angel of God traveling in front of Israel’s army - the Angel withdrew & went behind them - coming between the armies of Egypt and Israelites. 
• Neither group went near each other all night long when the Israelites were most vulnerable. 
2. v21 - then God parted the sea - miraculously while crossing through the sea. 
v22 - waters divided - they went through on dry ground with Egyptians pursuing them. 
Last watch of the night v26-28 the Lord said to Moses stretch out your hands… 
3. In the end God eliminated the most powerful army of the land with one event under His supreme control. 
A. Miracles help us withstand all doubt 
Do I really believe this event happened just like the scriptures describe it? 
2 Timothy 3:16; All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; 
But there are a lot of folks who don’t and theories abound even you can laugh at… 
1. A violent volcano in Greece caused all 10 of the plagues - matter of fact, the History Channel ran a program roughly 15 years ago that had this exact same basis. 
• Exodus 8 is clear after plague #3 
2. Some say an earthquake caused the wind to be some 350x more powerful than that caused by an Atom Bomb. 
3. Most common theory - Super low tide that night and the Israelites crossed over on a sand bar. 
• Illustration - Reminds me of the story of a young girl in 4th grade whose unbelieving teacher… 
What the Bible declares here at the Red Sea was a miracle of God pure and simple. 
• No human explanation for it - no rational explanation - for those of us who know God personally, who have been redeemed by His blood on the cross… 
B. There are no traps in God’s Word 
What difference does this miracle make to you - in your life? 
How do you think the Israelites felt at the Red Sea? I think they felt trapped and helpless - that God had forgotten them and forsaken them. 
In our own life we sometimes find ourselves feeling trapped and helpless at our own shores of the Red Sea; related to financial pressure, medical challenges, jobs, parenting…we sometimes act just like the Israelites did; thinking God is forgetting us…maybe not in so many words but by our anxiety.

The prophet Samuel was instructed by God to go to the house of Jesse to anoint the future king of Israel. David was youngest of eight brothers. When he was called and stood before Samuel, he knew immediately that this was the one whom God had chosen. David was God’s anointed. 
 
 Samuel poured oil on his head, representing, and picturing the anointing of the Holy Spirit on his life. From that moment forward the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David. 
 
 David, however, had to wait more than 12 years for that promise to be fulfilled. It was 12 years filled with trouble as Saul was relentless in the pursuit of David. He knew full well that God was giving the kingdom to David, but out of insecurity and fear he sought David’s life. 
 
 But King Saul and his son Jonathan were killed in a fierce battle with the Philistines. When David heard that Saul and Jonathan had died, he tore his clothes and wept and wrote a lament to honor them both. “Oh, how the mighty have fallen. They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions. O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,” he wrote. 
 
 David then went up to Hebron and was anointed king over the house of Judah. Seven and a half years later, when he was 30 years old, he was anointed king over all Israel. 
 
 One of the first things David did as king of Israel was to take the city of Jerusalem to establish the kingdom there. It would become the city where God would place his name, a city of His own possession. It would become the most important city on the face of the earth. 
 
 The center of the fulfilling of biblical prophecy in the latter days will take place in the city of Jerusalem. The epicenter of biblical prophecy will be the Temple Mount. 
 
 David wanted to honor the Lord who had chosen him to be king of Israel. He established a tabernacle, a tent, in Jerusalem, in the city of David for the ark of God to reside. 
 
 The ark of God had resided at the house of Abinadab for many years. David wanted it to be brought from the house of Abinadab to the city of Jerusalem, a distance of 14 miles. David’s heart and desire to honor God was beautiful. 
 
But when they brought the ark of God from the house of Abinadab, they didn’t move it according to the way prescribed in the law of Moses. That’s when tragedy struck. 
 
 The ark of God represented the very presence and power of God in Israel. God is holy and his presence is powerful. Respect God as holy and understand the power that comes from the nearness of God. 
 
I. The Presence of God is Holy 
 
 David was excited to have the ark of God in Jerusalem. It represented the glory and presence of God in Israel. 
 
 What better way to bring the ark of God into Jerusalem than with a glorious parade, David thought. 
 
 He gathered 30,000 chosen men of Israel. He brought instruments made of fir. 
 
 This was going to be a celebration. The ark of God was finally coming to Jerusalem after all these years. It represented the presence of God. 
 
 The ark of God had been out of place with no tabernacle because many years prior when Eli was priest, the people brought the ark of God into a battle with the Philistines. They thought the ark of God would assure their victory as if it were something to bring good luck. 
 
Illus - Things don’t bring good luck. There’s no such thing. Some people have a rabbit’s foot for good luck. Where did that come from? How can a rabbit’s foot bring good luck? It certainly didn’t help the rabbit. 
 
 The ark of God represented the very presence and power of God and God’s presence and power mustn’t be trifled with. God must be honored as holy. 
 
 Instead of bringing victory to Israel, the ark was captured by the Philistines. 
 
 The ark of God, the presence of God, brought great trouble to the Philistines, plagues of tumors and mice fell upon them, so they sent it back to Israel. They sent it back on a cart led by two milch cows.

1. The Apocalypse, the “revealing” of Jesus Christ when He returns, will be the most spectacular event the world has ever known. 
 
ILLUS – As in Jesus’ day, people today are fascinated by and want to know how the world will end. In fact, over the years, people have creatively labelled significant events by using “End of the World” terminology. 
 
2. The end of the world is a topic that has also raised many questions down through the ages. 
a. When will the end of the world happen? 
b. How will the world end? 
c. Who is the Antichrist? 
d. What is the “mark of the beast?” 
e. What will happen to the Church during the Great Tribulation? 
3. God wants us to know about the Apocalypse, the “revealing” of His Son, Jesus Christ. 
a. God gave us His Word so that we may know the truth about the end times. 
b. God also gave us the Holy Bible so that we may be prepared for the Second Coming. 
4. Tonight, we will delve into questions about the end times by studying Jesus’ teachings in Luke 17:20-37. 
5. It’s my prayer that our study will strengthen our faith, increase our love, and deepen our hope for the return of our Savior. 
Luke 17:20-37 
 
Context 
1. Massive crowds were following Jesus Christ as He journeyed up to Jerusalem, Israel’s capital city. 
a. At that time, Jesus’ popularity was growing. 
b. He was widely recognized as a prophet of God. 
c. There was even talk of making Him king. 
2. But it’s important to note that not all who were following Jesus were His supporters or disciples for planted among the throng were members of Israel’s elite religious, ruling class. 
a. The scribes and Pharisees were sent to spy on Jesus, to find some reason to accuse Him. 
b. The scribes and Pharisees were also sent to question Jesus, to trap Him and ultimately accuse Him of being a false teacher. 
3. The Pharisees questioned Jesus “as to when the kingdom of God was coming” because, like John the Baptist, a central theme of Jesus’ teaching was the coming of God’s kingdom. (20) 
4. Jesus’ answer is in two parts; first to the Pharisees (20-21) and then to His disciples (22-37). 
5. Jesus told the Pharisees, “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst.” 
6. What did Jesus mean by “in your midst?” 
a. First, Jesus was telling the Pharisees that they would not be able to tell of the coming of the kingdom through their observations; “signs to be observed.” Why? 
b. Because second, the kingdom of God was literally standing “in their midst;” Jesus Christ, their King, was standing “in their midst;” within their reach. 
c. Ultimately, Jesus was telling the Pharisees that all they had to do was acknowledge Jesus as their Messiah, their King, the One who would bring the kingdom, and then the kingdom of God would come. 
 
APPL – How tragic is the example of the Pharisees. 
• They had been blessed to witness Jesus’ ministry for over three years. 
• But what good did it do them? Zip. 
• Why? Because their pride had blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts so that they could not reach out and embrace the reality and the significance of Jesus being the Son of God, the Son of Man, their Messiah, Israel’s long-awaited King. 
• Since Israel’s religious, ruling elite rejected Jesus Christ, the kingdom of God would be delayed. 
 
7. That’s why Jesus then turned to His disciples and prophesied, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. . . But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.” (22, 25) 
8. Though the kingdom of God has been delayed, the Apocalypse, the revealing of Jesus Christ at His Second Coming is still set to happen. 
9. The time of the Son of Man’s revealing has been determined and will be preceded by unprecedented signs and events. 
10. What are these “signs” of the end times?

David was a young man, probably in his late teens, when the prophet Samuel came to his father’s house to anoint the future king of Israel. When Samuel entered, he looked at Eliab, the oldest son and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of the stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 
 
 Seven sons passed before Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these. Are these all the children?” Jesse answered, “There is the youngest, and behold, he is tending the sheep.” Samuel responded, “Send and bring him; we will not sit down until he comes.” 
 
 When David entered, Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him, and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward.” 
 
 That was the day David received the promise that one day he would receive a crown. But it would be 12 long years before he would receive that crown. God’s promises are sure, and David stood on God’s promise without wavering. 
 
 The question of the hour is this; how do you walk in the path of God’s promises? Does it matter how you walk? It mattered to David, and it matters to God. 
 
 The path to the fulfilling of God’s promise in David’s life was filled with troubles and trials. King Saul had relentlessly pursued David out of jealousy and fear and insecurity, yet David refused to be against Saul. He was God’s anointed. God had made Saul the king and David would not take matters into his own hands; God would have to remove Saul Himself. What faith and what character; how you walk matters. 
 
 When you trust Jesus as Lord and Savior, you are also filled with the Holy Spirit, there is a Crown of Righteousness and more that God also promises you. 
 
 In the end, we know who wins. There may be troubles and trials along the way, but we know who wins! 
 
Illus - At the end of the Super Bowl, the team that wins rejoices in jubilation; tears of joy running down their faces! They’re dancing and shouting; there will be rings for their fingers and their names will be written in the book of all who have won the great contest. 
 
 But look closer. Even in their shouting and dancing you can see that they’re battered and bruised, grass plastered on the helmets. It was an epic battle, but it was all worth it! They won in the end. 
 
 We also know how this story ends. The Son of Man will return at the end of the age and will set things right. He will rule and reign over the nations when he establishes his kingdom on the earth! 
 
 And for each one of us personally, when you receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, you know how your story ends! 
 
 How you walk on the path of God’s promises matters. God will build that which is beautiful in your character so that you can walk in the meaning and purpose of God’s favor on your life! 
 
 In these verses, David will be anointed king over the house of Judah and in chapter 5 he is anointed king over all Israel. The life lesson of David’s journey is the character and faith by which he walked the path of God’s promises. There is much to learn and apply to our lives from these verses. 
 
I. Persevere – Don’t Grow Weary 
 
 Verse 1 – “Then it came about afterwards…” That phrase captures a lot of history. It came about after what? 
 
 It came about after David grew weary of running from Saul and said to himself, “Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape into the land of the Philistines. Saul will despair of searching for me anymore and I will escape from his hand.” 
 
 David was doing so well in his faith, but he grew weary because of the trouble relentlessly pursuing him. He went over to the land of the Philistines which brought him to the darkest hour of his life. 
 
 There are many who can relate to growing weary in the relentlessness of life’s troubles. There are life lessons to take hold of from the story.

David was a young man, probably in his late teens, when the prophet Samuel came to his father’s house to anoint the future king of Israel. The focus of the scriptures in our study has to do with the spiritual realm. There is a physical realm we can see and feel and hear, but there is also a spiritual realm. In fact, there is often a spiritual battle behind the things you see in the physical realm. 
 
Those with spiritual discernment understand that there are dark spiritual forces at work behind what is happening in the world today. There are tectonic shifts happening in the world that will lead to cataclysmic events of the latter days. 
 
 Paul wrote in Ephesians 6:12, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places.” 
 
 Jesus is preparing His church for victory. In that same chapter, Paul wrote, “Be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” 
 
 Though Satan is strongly influencing the world today, he is a defeated foe. However, though he is defeated, he keeps fighting and will fight to claim many lives until the end. 
 
 On June 6, 1944, when 155,000 Allied soldiers stormed the beaches at Normandy, it was the single greatest invasion in world history. From that point forward, Hitler knew the war would be lost. It was only a matter of time. Yet he kept fighting to the bitter end, refusing to acknowledge defeat. The enemy of your soul also knows the war will be lost, yet he fights to the bitter end, destroying as many as possible in the process. 
 
 One of the great truths of the scriptures is that God is master over the spiritual realm. By the authority in Jesus, He cast out of legion of demons. 
 
 And though this world is messed up, Jesus will return to set things right by that same authority. At the end of the age, He will set foot on the Mount of Olives and enter Jerusalem to shepherd the nations with a rod of iron. He will set things right because there is so much that is wrong in this world that the world thinks is good… 
 
Isaiah 5:20, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; we substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” 
 
I was thinking of a lighthearted example. When I was growing up, we had our own slang expressions, but they made sense; words like, “hunky-dory,” or “gee-whiz,” or “holy smoke,” or “groovy” and “far out!” Those sayings make sense. 
 
But today, things mean the opposite of what they say. If something is good, it’s ‘bad’ or ‘wicked,’ or ‘sick,’ or ‘killer.’ If something is cool, it’s hot. I’m confused. 
 
Jesus will come to set things right. The world system will be destroyed, nations will be defeated; in other words, when Jesus returns, the world will be under new management. 
 
But it’s also personal. When Paul wrote about the spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places, he also said to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might; and to take up the full armor of God that you may be able to resist in the evil day; and having done everything to stand firm, to stand firm, therefore. 
 
In our story in 1 Samuel, the enemy of Israel, the Philistines have gathered in mass in battle array to attack Israel in the Jezreel Valley. The same valley in which the battle of Armageddon will take place in the latter days. 
 
When King Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled within him. He had no strength and he had no courage. He had no faith because he had not been walking with God for a long time. This story is insight into the victory in spiritual warfare that God wants you to have. It will come down to this; the soul within you must be strengthened in the Lord to stand firm in the evil day.

Ephesians 5:15-17 
 
Transition – The first principle from this passage is to Make Your Todays Count by. . . 
 
I. Watching Your Walk (15) 
 
• In the Greek, this is a present tense command which means that the Apostle Paul is telling us to “look and keep on looking.” 
• It can also mean to “be alert and keep on being alert.” 
 
A. Walk with your eyes wide open (15a) 
 
ILLUS – Walking with my eyes wide open through the Ape Caves with my kids. 
 
1. In essence, Paul is telling us to pay close attention to our priorities; make sure our priorities line up with God’s priorities. 
2. Paul is also telling us to pay close attention to our choices; make sure our choices line up with God’s Word. 
3. If we heed Paul’s counsel, then we will avoid the way of the unwise, or the way of the “fool.” 
 
APPL – The devil has mastered the art of distraction. 
• Pleasure, leisure, procrastination, and even fear are devices at his disposal which can lead the unsuspecting, distracted, and deceived to believe they can put off the weighty matters of life for another day. 
• If we follow the devil’s way, we will get off course, we will miss the mark, and suffer the consequences; the loss of a valuable day. 
 
APPL – Have you ever noticed that when it comes to life, often there’s a difference in perspectives between younger and older people? 
• Many young people live for the moment without any concern or concern of consequences. 
• While the seasoned citizens realize time is short. 
o Many regret the foolish choices they made earlier in life because they feel the impact of those poor choices later in life. 
o For some, they live with the consequences of their poor choices every day. 
 
ILLUS – A truck driver’s response to my greeting. 
 
1 Peter 5:6, Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 
 
B. Walk wisely (15b) 
 
Transition – The Bible reveals that certain characteristics are true of people who walk wisely. 
 
1. First, wise people are humble people because wisdom begins with humility. 
 
Proverbs 11:2, When pride comes, then comes dishonor, but with the humble is wisdom. 
 
APPL – Why is a wise person humble? 
• Because a wise person knows that the God of the Bible exists and that He alone is God. 
• Conversely. . . 
 
Psalm 14:1, The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” 
 
• A wise person honors God by giving God the highest place in their life. 
• This means a wise person recognizes, welcomes, and submits to God’s authority. 
• What is God’s response to those who humble themselves, welcome, and submit to His authority? 
• He graciously gives them grace upon grace, over and over again. 
 
James 4:6-7, God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Submit therefore to God. 
 
2. Second, they are teachable because a humble heart is a teachable heart. 
 
Proverbs 1:5, A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel 
 
APPL – It’s also important to see that a wise person knows where to find wise counsel. 
• They exercise care and discernment when selecting their source for counsel. 
 
Proverbs 13:20, He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. 
 
Proverbs 14:7, Leave the presence of a fool, or you will not discern words of knowledge. 
 
• May I recommend a proven source for wisdom; the inspired, inerrant, infallible Holy Bible, God’s written Word to us. 
o Since God is all-knowing and all-wise, His Word is filled with nuggets of divine wisdom for our lives. 
o The wise person knows that God’s Word is the best source for wisdom. 
o They study God’s Word so that they may benefit by having it richly dwell within them.
