God is calling all fathers - a priceless call on our lives if you are a dad. The most challenging calling on your life if you are single or do not yet have children. And a legacy in the making if you are a grandfather. 
Society is increasingly devaluing masculinity and manhood - under attack and being redefined - fathers are often portrayed in poor light. 
63% youth suicides from fatherless homes 
71% high school dropouts… 
75% youth in drug abuse treatment… 
85% youth in prison… 90% runaways… 
Shocking, but maybe not surprising - our political correctness won’t discuss it. Truth is rarely news or doesn’t fit the narrative. 
Moms! You may recall that on Mother’s Day, I cautioned the dads not to fall asleep thinking the message didn’t apply to them - same caution to you ladies this evening. 
A Mother’s role is so very important - not one over the other - God designed the roles to compliment one an-other to reflect His nature and heart - neither alone can do it all - mom primarily of nurture and care - as a child matures he/she looks to dad for role model pro-cessing decisions - if dad is inadequate or absent it's much harder - spiritual stakes are very high. 
• Single moms? What’s that mean for you? Encourage you that God does exceptional things in the life of people who believe in Him! 
• Statistics also show where a father regularly at-tends church; 66% kids will attend. Both parents attend; 75% children regularly attend. 
• A necessity, not a luxury…Producing a child doesn’t make you a father - Being Married doesn’t make you a mate - Male doesn’t make you a man in God’s eyes. 
I. God’s Most Important Command 
Dad - the way you lead affects your children, your home, generations to come! 
If you are a father today with young children, I encourage you to pay this price now, on the front end of their life because the rewards come later. 
Proverbs 22:6; Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he grows older he will not abandon it. 
Teen dads, I urge you to begin paying the price now even if you haven’t up to this point. Never too late to start being that father for your teenagers. 
You are a dad of grown kids; maybe you blew it earlier, it’s never too late and I encourage you to seek them out, ask their forgiveness for not doing better and ask them for another chance to speak into their lives, encourage them, be there for them. 
Single men - or newly married without children - listen to this message, so you know the price to pay before you get there to be a godly father. 
I want to give you some anchors on this topic of being available to God’s call in your life as a father so I hope you will study these notes beyond tonight and let God direct or redirect your path. 
A. Godly fathers pursue relationship 
Our passage contains the most important words God ever said, and within our passage, God is calling all fathers. What does that look like in your life today? 
* An effective father cultivates a deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ in his own life.

When David and his men were in Ein Gedi and Saul came into the very cave they were hiding in, David’s men wanted David to extract revenge and take Saul’s life. 
 
 David would not do it. He would not touch the Lord’s anointed, “My hand will not be against you,” David said, “though you lie in wait to take my life, my hand will not be against you.” 
 
 What an example of character and faith. Everyone there knew it, this was the action of a king. “Now I know,” Saul responded, “you surely will be king of Israel and the kingdom will surely be in your hand.” 
 
 1 Samuel 25 is a different story, however. Here, David loses his temper when he is insulted and reproached by a man who doesn’t recognize his stature. He is one step away from making the biggest mistake of his life. 
 
 That part is not good. Temper and anger have undone more than one man in history and David won’t be the last. David does become a champion in this story, however; not because of his anger, but because he listens to good sense and changes course. That is the action of a champion and that is the great lesson from the story. 
 
 There are three people at the center of this story. There is David who has been anointed to become the next king of Israel. At this moment Saul was still the king and his jealousy over David's success and his desperate attempts to hold onto the throne have caused David to be on the run. 
 
 Then there is Nabal. His name literally means, "fool." It's hard to imagine why his parents would actually give him this name. Perhaps it was like the boy named Sue in the famous song by Johnny Cash. A name like that would make him tough when he had to stand up to everyone who made fun of his name. 
 
However he was given the name, the name stuck. He is a grouchy, cantankerous, difficult, and selfish man who lives out his name. 
 
 Then there is Abigail, Nabal’s wife. She was intelligent and beautiful in appearance. She becomes the heroine of the story because when her husband Nabal insults and reproaches David, and David loses his temper, she is the one who intervenes. The wisdom of Dear Abigail wins the day. 
 
 Abigail is respectful and wise as she shows David that if he allows his anger and temper to get the best of him, he will regret it the rest of his life. 
 
 David is a champion because he reins in his temper and listens to good sense. That is the action of a man of faith and a man of godly character. 
 
I. Avoid the Fool Within 
 
 David was most certainly a gentleman when he requested supplies. He was not making demands. The fact that David sent 10 men suggested that David was hoping for something significant. 
 
 Nabal replies with an insulting, degrading, and disrespectful answer. In other words, in keeping with his name, he gives David a foolish answer. 
 
 David's response is no better. He was willing to withhold his hand from being against Saul because Saul was the Lord’s anointed. He trusted God to judge between them and to settle this account. But David knows he will be the king one day and Nabal has dishonored him. 
 
 It’s a life lesson. Everyone was born with the foolishness of pride and temper and anger within them. It's called, “the flesh.” It’s the fool within. 
 
A. Emotions make terrible masters 
 
 David's young men report back to him with Nabal's foolish response, David loses his temper and tells his men to strap on their swords. David is about to take 400 men with which he has defeated powerful foreign invaders and bring all that power and might crashing down on Nabal and his few men. 
 David's emotions have gotten the better of him. 
 God gave us our emotions, they can be a beautiful part of relationships and relationship to God. But emotions are given to serve you, not to master you. There is an old saying, “emotions make great servants, but terrible masters.” 
 This is especially true of the emotions of temper and anger. 
Proverbs 16:32, He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit, is better than he who captures a city.

1. Who comes to mind when I say, “They had the right kind of faith”? 
a. Is it Noah because he trusted God and built an ark large enough to protect his family and representatives from the animal kingdom from a cataclysmic, global flood? 
b. Is it Abraham because he believed God would give him and his wife, Sarah, a son even though he was 100 years old and she was 90? 
c. Or is it Moses because he obeyed God’s command to lift his staff to part the waters of the Red Sea so that Israel may escape from the wrath of Pharaoh’s army? 
d. How about David when he stood before a giant warrior named Goliath with only a sling and a few stones because he believed his battles belonged to the Lord? 
2. When we think of these saints and those big events in Israel’s history, it’s easy to connect the dots and say, “They had the right kind of faith.” 
3. But what exactly is “the right kind of faith?” 
4. Tonight, we will discover what the right kind of faith is as we study the teachings of our Savior, Jesus Christ. 
5. From Jesus’ teachings in Luke 17 we will learn what is true of the right kind of faith so that it can be said of us, “You have the right kind of faith.” 
 
Luke 17:1-19 
 
Transition – If faith were a diamond with many facets, what kind of facets would make up the right kind of faith? Verses 1-10 reveal that. . . 
 
I. The Right Kind of Faith is Faithful (1-10) 
 
• At this point Jesus is heading towards Jerusalem. 
• Jesus has been healing broken lives, teaching about God’s kingdom, and correcting the false teachings and corrupt motives of Israel’s religious elite. 
• Beginning in verse one, Jesus turns to His disciples and reveals to them what the right kind of faith consists of; and what He shares is not what we would likely expect. 
• You see the right kind of faith that Jesus is talking about is not the “big event” kind of faith, like that of Noah, Abraham, Moses, or David. 
• Rather, it’s important to see that the “big event” kind of faith is built upon the foundation of a faith which often goes unnoticed by men but never goes unnoticed by God. 
• It’s the kind of faith that requires great focus and tenacity as it engages the grind of life one day at a time, one battle at a time, one moment at a time. 
• This right kind of faith is faithful. 
• And Jesus expects His disciples to be faithful in how they live their lives each day, in how they engage with those who are not, and in how they forgive those who ask. 
 
Transition – Let’s look at these facets of a faithful, right kind of faith. First. . . 
A. It’s the kind of faith that is above reproach 
1. Jesus said, “It is inevitable that stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble. Be on your guard!” (1-3) 
2. Context is helpful here. Remember, Jesus has been confronting the Pharisees because of their pride, hypocrisy, and love of money. 
3. Truth be told, their failure to recognize Jesus as Israel’s Messiah was driven by their deep-rooted pride. 
4. Also remember the Pharisees were brutally outspoken in their rejection of Jesus. 
a. They publicly accused Jesus of casting out demons by “Beelzebul the ruler of the demons.” (Matthew 12:24) 
b. And they openly scoffed at His teachings. (Luke 16:14) 
5. The Pharisees rejection of Jesus swayed public opinion and became a stumbling block to those who wanted to know more about Jesus, even those among Israel’s ruling class. 
 
John 12:42, Nevertheless many even of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue 
 
6. So Jesus used a graphic word picture to warn those who sought to interfere with someone coming to saving faith in Him. (2) 
7. And we must see that Jesus’ warning was also a wake-up call to His disciples because He knew they were not immune to the trappings of pride, in fact, no one is.

1. It happens even in the best of families; relationships get strained and, over time, the strain can lead to separation. 
 
ILLUS – A Father’s Love 
 
2. I have noticed that when we hear stories such as this, the initial warming of our hearts is often followed by reflections and thoughts about our own relationships, the relationships we have with our parents, siblings, and loved ones and the possible need for healing and reconciliation. 
3. And I have noticed that when we hear stories such as this, some may also begin to reflect upon deeper questions about their relationship with God such as: 
a. “Does God still love me?” or 
b. “Can God ever forgive me?” 
4. Questions like these are understandable for who among us is perfect or pure as the wind-driven snow. 
5. The raw truth is that none of us are perfect because all of us have made our fair share of mistakes, regrettable decisions, embarrassing choices, and willful sins. 
 
Psalm 14:1-3, They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; there is no one who does good. . . Who seek after God. They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. 
 
6. If this is what the Bible says about us, then what does God think when He thinks about us? 
a. Does God still love us though we have failed? 
b. And can God forgive us? If so, how? Why? 
7. Tonight, we will discover the answers to these questions and so much more as we look to Jesus’ teaching in Luke 15. 
8. From three famous parables, we will learn just how much God loves us and why. 
 
Luke 15:1-32 
 
Transition – The first principle that Jesus wants us to know about God’s love for us is. . .. 
 
I. You are Valuable to God (3-10) 
 
• When we turn to Luke 15, the Pharisees and scribes are grumbling about Jesus once again. Surprise! Surprise! (2) 
• Why were Israel’s self-righteous religious elite grumbling about Jesus? Because “all the tax collectors and the sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him.” (1) 
• At this point, I’m sure you’re thinking, “That makes perfect sense.” 
o Why would any “godly person” want hardcore sinners to come to Jesus to hear what He had to say? 
o They might get saved for crying out loud! 
• But wait, for the scribes and Pharisees it actually gets worse because Jesus not only taught them, He even broke bread with these deplorable sinners. (2) 
o The scribes and Pharisees were thinking, “How could Jesus do such a thing?” 
o “A real man of God would never debase himself this way. . . right?” 
• For the Hebrews, eating a meal with someone else was of great significance. 
o It was a picture of commonality, of acceptance, oneness, and relationship. 
o In Jesus’ day, people would gather around a table, and with their bare hands break off a piece of bread from a common loaf, place a chunk of meat on the bread, dip both into a common bowl of sauce, eat it, and then go back for seconds and thirds. 
• Why would Jesus welcome sinners, teach sinners, and even eat with sinners? 
o Was there a method to His madness? 
o Was there some important message that Jesus was communicating to us through these interactions? 
• The answer is “Yes!” In fact, Jesus seizes upon the opportunity to use this moment to transport them, and us today, to the very throne room of heaven so that we may capture a glimpse of God’s heart for lost souls; for the tax collectors, the prostitutes, drug addicts, thieves, gamblers, adulterers, fornicators, liars, and anyone else who has ever broken any of the Ten Commandments. 
 
Transition – What’s His message? 
• As I said a moment ago, that “You are Valuable to God.” 
• And because you are valuable to God. . . 
 
A. God pursues us in love 
1. Being the Master Teacher that He was, Jesus knew His audience and shared with them parables they could relate to. 
2. The first parable is about a shepherd with a modest-sized flock of 100 sheep. (3-7)

2. I have noticed that when we hear stories such as this, the initial warming of our hearts is often followed by reflections and thoughts about our own relationships, the relationships we have with our parents, siblings, and loved ones and the possible need for healing and reconciliation.

Character matters. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that all men would be judged according to the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. That’s exactly right, and it speaks to the fact that character matters because it defines who you are and what you’re made of. 
 
 Character is the qualities or traits that when combined together, define your nature, your character. 
 
 God has attributes of character that define His nature as well. God is loving, forgiving, gracious and kind, He is just and righteous altogether, merciful and patient. God is good, He is faithful and true. God’s character is beautiful and glorious. And there are many more attributes that describe His nature and His character. This is important because these are the attributes of character God wants to instill in our lives, our nature, and our character. 
 
 I mentioned last week that we were not born with such character, we were born in the nature of man, in the sin of Adam. You don’t have to teach a child to be selfish, they were born selfish; you must teach a child to share. You don’t have to teach a child to lie, you must teach a child to speak the truth. You don’t have to teach a child to throw temper tantrum, you must teach a child to have self-control. 
 
 I came upon an interesting study done by the Minnesota Crime Commission, a secular institution for sure. This is the result of their in-depth study: Every baby starts life as a little savage. He is completely selfish and self-centered. He wants what he wants, when he wants it – his bottle, his mother’s attention, his playmate’s toy. Deny him these wants, and he seethes with rage and aggressiveness, which would be murderous, were he not so helpless. He is dirty. He has no morals, no knowledge, and no skills. This means that all children, not just certain children, are born delinquent. If permitted to continue in the self-centered world of his infancy, given free reign to his impulsive actions to satisfy his wants, every child will grow up a criminal, a thief, a killer, and a rapist. 
 
 In other words, a sinner is a sinner by nature. A sinner, therefore, does sinful things. In other words, a dog is a dog, a cat is a cat, a horse is a horse… unless of course… 
 
 Here’s the good news; people can change, character can change. God loves sinners and He sent His Son to seek sinners, to draw them to Himself. He loves sinners and does not want them to perish, but to have everlasting life. He calls their name, He knocks on the door of their heart, and when they open their heart, He takes up residence in that sinner’s life and begins the work of transformation, of building new character and a new heart. Character matters and character matters to God. 
 
In 1 Samuel 18, the story continues immediately after David defeated the Philistine giant, Goliath. David’s victory is an amazing story of the power of complete faith and trust in God. “The Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.” 
 
David then added, “that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.” That’s faith. 
 Saul was taller than all the men in Israel, he stood head and shoulders over them. But David had greater faith than all of them. God was searching for a man to replace Saul as king of Israel. Saul was a man after the people’s heart, but David was a man after God’s heart. 
 
 Chapter 18 is about character. Saul’s son, Jonathan watched as David challenged Goliath, he heard his speech, he saw his faith and his heart was knitted to the soul of David and Jonathan loved him as himself. 
 
We already know that Jonathan had character and faith as well. He knows good character when he sees it. 
 
 Saul on the other hand also saw David arising in Israel. The people loved him, and this made Saul seethe with jealousy. It’s a study in contrasts and it’s a study of why character matters. There are many life lessons in the story.

Genesis 1:1-4, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 
 
1. Light and darkness. At creation God separated the light from darkness, establishing a distinction between the two. 
2. According to God’s Word, light represents God and all that is of God because His presence is glorious, His character is holy, and His deeds are righteous. 
3. According to the Bible, darkness represents evil, all that is opposed to God, all that is not holy, all that is not righteous. 
4. And ever since Lucifer rebelled against God and took one-third of the angels with him, there has been a battle between the forces of light and the forces of darkness. 
5. Which will prevail, light or darkness? 
6. As students of God’s Word and disciples of Jesus Christ, we know light will ultimately triumph over darkness because the Bible tells us so. 
7. But tonight, we will not focus on the epic, cosmic battle between light and darkness. 
8. Rather, we will look inward, to the battle within. 
9. Luke 14:1-24 reveals important principles for Walking in the Light so that light may prevail over darkness in our lives. 
 
Luke 14:1-24 
 
Transition – The first principle for walking in the light is to. . . 
 
I. Ask God to Search Your Heart 
 
• That was David’s prayer request after he reflected on God’s awe-inspiring nature. 
 
Psalm 139:23-24, Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way. 
 
• Why should we ask God to search our hearts? 
• So that He may reveal to us if there is any hurtful way in us. 
o Hurtful towards others. 
o Hurtful towards ourselves. 
 
Transition – For example, verses 1-6 reveal why it is important to. . . 
 
A. Ask God to reveal any hypocrisy 
1. The context of Luke 14 is important to remember; it’s the Sabbath. 
a. A day that God appointed as a day of devotion and worship. 
b. A day that God appointed as a day to rest and be refreshed. 
c. A day that God appointed as a day to draw near to God and glorify Him with our every thought, word, and deed. 
 
Exodus 20:8-11, Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. 
 
2. On this Sabbath day, a leader of the Pharisees invited Jesus to his home for a meal along with other distinguished Pharisees and experts in the Mosaic Law. 
3. Likely, this group had just left the local synagogue where they had listened to readings from the Law and the Prophets followed by a teaching from a portion of those divinely inspired texts. 
4. The end of verse one reveals the real motive behind the host’s invitation for Jesus to dine with him and Israel’s esteemed religious leaders on that Sabbath day, “they were watching Him closely.” 
a. The Greek word for “watching closely” means “to lurk or to carefully observe.” 
b. This word paints a graphic picture of just how dark the darkness was in the hearts of the Pharisees and lawyers. 
c. You see the whole meal was a setup, a trap to snare Jesus and find grounds to accuse, convict, and condemn Him. 
5. What was the trap? A man suffering from “dropsy” was also invited to the meal. 
a. Dropsy is a painful disease where the body tissues fill with fluid often due to kidney or heart issues, or even cancer. 
b. Now in Jesus’ day some rabbis thought if someone had dropsy it was a consequence of their immoral lifestyle.

1. Heaven. Questions about heaven are numerous. 
2. Is there a heaven? If there is, then what will heaven be like? 
 
ILLUS – The Pope and a Lawyer meet St. Peter in Heaven. 
 
3. On a personal level, “How do you go to heaven?” 
4. The Bible has a lot to say about this question and tonight we will discover the answer along with the reason why some will not go to heaven. 
5. Let’s look to the teachings of Jesus Christ about heaven beginning with verse 22 of Luke 13. 
 
Luke 13:22-35 
 
Context 
1. Luke records that large crowds followed Jesus as He traveled from “one city and village to another, teaching, and proceeding on His way to Jerusalem.” (22) 
2. It was common then as it is now for people to wonder about heaven, who will be there and why. 
3. In fact, the Jewish scribes were known for offering their opinions about heaven, answering questions such as, “How many people will be saved?” 
4. Now, in Jesus’ day when the Jews talked about being saved, it’s important to note that “salvation” was linked to entrance into the kingdom of God. 
5. Remember that in Luke 13:18-19, Jesus had been talking about the kingdom of God and compared it to a mustard seed, meaning it would start out small and grow over time. 
6. In light of what Jesus said, someone asked Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” (23) 
 
Transition – Jesus’ answer to this question gives us divine insight into how to go to heaven and why some will not. If you want to go to heaven, then. . . 
 
I. Strive to Enter the Narrow Door to Heaven 
 
• Likely the questioner just wanted to know if they had understood Jesus correctly, that only a few will be saved and enter the kingdom of God. 
• But Jesus did not answer their general question with an impersonal answer. 
• In fact, Jesus gave a personal command to all within earshot and to all who would read His words later. 
• In essence, Jesus was and is saying, “This is how you go to heaven. . .” 
• “Strive to enter through the narrow door.” (24) 
• The word “strive” literally means “to strain every nerve, to struggle, to fight with great intensity and effort.” 
• Our English word “anguish” is derived from this Greek word. 
• So if we put it all together, Jesus was saying something like this, “You all are commanded to make every effort, to do your best, to work hard, to exert maximum effort in order to enter the narrow door to be saved, to enter the kingdom of God.” 
• What does Jesus mean? 
o Are we saved by our good works? 
o Or does God save those who save themselves by exerting great effort? 
• The answer to these questions is revealed once we know the identity of the “narrow door.” 
 
Transition – “Who” is the narrow door that we must strive to enter through to go to heaven? 
 
A. Jesus is the Narrow Door to Heaven 
1. You might be asking, “How does Matthew Dodd know Jesus is referring to Himself as the narrow door?” 
2. Because there are other passages where Jesus refers to Himself in a similar fashion. 
3. For instance, in John 10, Jesus calls Himself the “door of the sheep.” 
 
John 10:7, 9, So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. . . I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved” 
 
4. Later in John’s Gospel, Jesus says that if you want to come to the heavenly Father, you must go through Him. 
 
John 14:6, Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” 
5. Well others may ask, “If Jesus is the narrow door, then why do I need to strive or work to go to heaven?” 
a. Or to ask the question another way, “What work does God require of us to go to heaven?” 
b. Jesus was asked a similar question and His answer is relevant to our study.

There are decisions that set the course of life. If you back, you will see that certain decisions became hinge points that changed the course of your life. There are decisions you will make in the future that will also set the course. 
 
 How do you choose well so that the course of your life is the path of greatest blessing? You can’t choose all the things that come in life. You can’t choose all your battles, sometimes you must take what lies in the course before you. How you respond and how you choose will set the course. 
 
 And though you cannot always choose your battles and you cannot always choose the things that come in life, there are many decisions you choose that set the course. 
 
 God gives principles in His word to guide you in the course of life, so that you choose well and live in the place of greatest blessing and favor, even if life is hard and troubles come you never expected. There are challenges ahead and God’s Holy Spirit and God’s word and God’s principles will guide you. 
 
 Saul was inaugurated as the first king of Israel. The course of his life was set by that calling. But he had a part in how he would live out that calling. The decisions he made would determine whether he would build a legacy of a king that did good and right or a man whose decisions cost him dearly. 
 
Israel had rejected God as their king and demanded to be like the nations around them with a king over them as well. God gave Israel a man after their own heart, someone who was head and shoulders taller than other men and more handsome than any man in Israel. 
 
God also gave Saul everything he needed to stay on course. He strengthened his unbelief by giving him many confirmations of the Word of God. He anointed him with the Holy Spirit and even allowed him to prophesy with the prophets of Israel. 
 
 God gave Samuel everything he needed for life and godliness, to stay on the course, to live out his calling well. 
 
Unfortunately, Saul’s decisions became turning points in his life. Wrongful decisions altered his course. At one point, Saul grew impatient waiting for Samuel who was to come at the end of seven days and offer a sacrifice and peace offering. 
 
Saul took matters in his own hands and assumed the priestly office. Wrong decision. It altered his course. Samuel responded, “Now your kingdom shall not endure. The Lord has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has appointed him as ruler over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” 
 
 Here in chapter 15, Saul has another opportunity to demonstrate obedience to the Lord. Saul did not do well. He is veering off course. It’s a life lesson of the importance of being faithful and true and walking the course of this life honoring God with every decision and every point of turning. 
 
I. Build on the Foundation of His Word 
 
 The Amalekites attacked Israel as they were crossing through the desert after leaving Egypt. They attacked from the rear, killing all who were straggling behind, mothers with infants, the elderly, and the weak and the lame. 
 
 God instructed Moses that when Israel had entered the Promised Land, this issue must be settled; never forget what they did to Israel, God said. 
 
 That mission was given to Saul, but he did not obey what God had said. He spared Agag, the king of the Amalekites, as well as the best of the sheep, oxen, lambs, and all that was good. 
 
 At first, Saul was glad to see Samuel, “Blessed are you of the Lord! I have carried out the command of the Lord.” He thought he did, but he didn’t. 
 
 “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?” Samuel said. 
 
 If only he had carried out the command of the Lord. That phrase ‘carried out’ in the Hebrew means to ‘establish’ God’s word in your life. 
 
A. Those who are wise --- build 
 
 If you carry out God’s word, if you establish His word in your life, that is wisdom. And those who are wise will build their lives upon it.

There’s an old saying, and it’s true, “God loves you just as you are, but loves you too much to let you stay that way.” One of the most beautiful aspects of God’s love is that the holy, righteous God of heaven loves sinners. He sent His Son to seek and to save that which was lost. In another place Jesus is called the friend of sinners. 
 
 If sinners need to be saved, however, then sinners also need to be changed, to be transformed, to be made new. This is the work God does when He draws sinners to Himself. 
 
1 Samuel 10 is about God changing a man or a woman. The principles here in this chapter are true today. God is still moving, God is still transforming, God is still making people new. This chapter shows us how. 
 
At this point in Israel’s history, Samuel was recognized as a powerful prophet. The people came to Samuel and demanded to have a king so they could be like the nations around them. There is real danger in wanting to be like the world. God has called you and me to be different, to be set apart for Him. 
 
 This thing was displeasing to Samuel when they asked for a king, but he took their request to the Lord. God answered, telling Samuel to give them what they demanded, “They have not rejected you, but rather, they have rejected me.” That is a life lesson in and of itself; never reject God from ruling over you. 
 
 A couple chapters later, Samuel gives a powerful speech, explaining God’s heart, that God would have been their king, but they were not content. “When Israel was enslaved in Egypt and cried out to the Lord, God brought them out of Egypt and settled them in this place, all without a king,” Samuel said. “During the time of the Judges, when Israel turned their back on God and then cried out to the Lord, God sent one deliver after the other and saved them. He did all of that when there was no king in Israel because God is your king,” Samuel said. 
 
If God is not your king, if His word does not have authority in your life, you will find yourself doing what is right in your own eyes. That is the very thing that brought so much distress and trouble to Israel, and the same will be true for anyone who does the same today. God wants to be your king, but as your king, He will direct you into the way of greatest blessing and greatest favor. 
 
 God then revealed to Samuel that Saul, from the tribe of Benjamin would be their king. 1 Samuel 9:2, “He was a choice and handsome man, there was not a more handsome person than he among all the sons of Israel; and from his shoulders and up he was taller than any of the people.” In other words, God gave Israel someone they wanted, a man after their own heart. 
 God gave Saul everything he needed to become a great king. Saul began well, it would be up to him to finish well. 
 
I. Live the Spirit Filled Life 
 
 Verse 1 - Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on Saul's head, kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you as ruler over his inheritance?” 
 
 Anointing of oil represented the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on his life for the purpose of ruling over Israel. For Saul to reign well, he would need the very life of God upon him. 
 
 The ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament is distinctly different than the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. 
 
 In the Old Testament, God gave the Holy Spirit to specific people for specific purposes. The anointing and the infilling of the Spirit was limited. He anointed prophets, priests, and kings. 
 
 In this case, God gave the Holy Spirit to Saul for the purpose of ruling Israel as king. 
 
 In the New Testament, God gives the Holy Spirit to every person who opens their heart to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior… 
 
Romans 8:9, 14, If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him… For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 
 
 “But wait,” you might say, “I’m not called to be a king, why would I be anointed?”

There’s an old saying, and it’s true, “God loves you just as you are, but loves you too much to let you stay that way.” One of the most beautiful aspects of God’s love is that the holy, righteous God of heaven loves sinners. He sent His Son to seek and to save that which was lost. In another place Jesus is called the friend of sinners.

 If sinners need to be saved, however, then sinners also need to be changed, to be transformed, to be made new. This is the work God does when He draws sinners to Himself.

1. The only thing that is predictable about our world is that it is unpredictable. Life is crazy. 
2. A while ago, a friend sent me a funny story which perfectly illustrates how our crazy world works. 
 
ILLUS – How our crazy world works. 
 
3. And this crazy world can leave a sour taste in your mouth. 
4. Have you ever started a day, and before you even get out of bed, you just know it’s going to be a bad day? 
5. A while back my wife, Heidi, showed me a funny cartoon that captures that feeling so well in the form of a prayer. 
 
ILLUS – Morning prayer. 
 
6. Perhaps you have also noticed how quickly that sour taste from the world can turn into a bitter, broken heart. 
7. But God does not want our hearts to get bitter because of the problems and pains of this life. 
8. Jesus promised us freedom. 
 
John 8:36, So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (NIV) 
 
9. Today, we are going to look at the example of one of my favorite men in the Bible, his name was Joseph. 
10. In Genesis 41, we will discover important principles for how God healed his broken heart. 
11. The good news is, God can and wants to heal your broken heart too. 
 
Genesis 41:50-52 
 
Context 
1. After Joseph turned 17, his life fell apart. 
a. He went from being his father’s favorite son to a slave in Egypt. 
• Sold into slavery by his older brothers. 
• Sent away from his father and family and taken to Egypt. 
b. Then, in Egypt, Joseph went from a slave to a prisoner because his master’s wife falsely accused him of making advances while his master was away. 
c. When the years are added up, Joseph spent 13 long years of suffering either as a slave or as a prisoner in Egypt. 
2. Then, in Genesis 41, Joseph’s life dramatically changed. 
a. One night, Pharaoh had two dreams, and no one in Pharaoh’s court could interpret them. 
b. Word was sent to Pharaoh about Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams and he was immediately brought into Pharaoh’s presence. 
3. God gave Joseph the ability to interpret both of Pharaoh’s dreams, they were in fact one and the same: 
a. Egypt would experience seven years of abundance, 
b. Followed by seven years of severe famine. 
4. After interpreting Pharaoh’s dreams, Joseph proposed an administrative solution; store 20% of the grain harvested during each of the seven good years to use for food during the seven years of famine. 
5. Pharaoh was thrilled with Joseph’s proposal and immediately elevated him to second in command over all in Egypt. The only person greater than Joseph was Pharaoh. 
6. Joseph was finally free from slavery and prison; but was he truly free, was his heart still broken? 
 
Transition – The names Joseph gave to his two sons born before the famine began reveal the answer and why it was so. If you want God to heal your broken heart then. . . 
 
I. Let God Make You Forget (51) 
 
• Now, if you are like me, you are probably thinking, “I don’t need any help when it comes to forgetting, especially from God.” 
• “My problem is remembering, not forgetting.” (Keys, Names, Shopping List) 
• I am not talking about the little things of life. 
• I am talking about deeper things, the wounds from others, the hurtful words, and the harmful deeds. 
• If you want your heart to be healed, then you must Let God Make You Forget. 
 
Transition – There are two ways to “forget.” 
 
A. There is a “wrong way” to forget 
1. Joseph’s wife gave him two sons. 
a. The first one Joseph named Manasseh. 
b. The second one he named Ephraim. 
2. The meaning of the name Manasseh is significant for it means, “making to forget.” 
3. What was Joseph forgetting? Joseph said, “God has made me forget” … 
a. “All my trouble.” 
b. “All my father’s household.” 
c. All my trouble and all who caused me trouble. 
4. What did Joseph mean when he said that? 
5. Was Joseph saying that God gave him the ability to “write off” his family? 
a. Did Joseph disown his family? 
b. Did he divorce himself physically and emotionally from all attachment to his family?
