There’s a difference between having ears and having “ears to hear.” In other words, there are different types of hearers. Some hear the words of God, but their heart is closed, and they cannot receive it. There are others who hear and receive it into their heart and live according to it. They are the ones who have ears to hear. 
 
What a contrast between the Jewish leaders of Jesus’s day and the disciples who said, “Who else has the words of life?” 
 
Matthew 13:15-16, “The heart of this people has become dull, with their ears they scarcely hear. They have closed their eyes, otherwise they would see with their eyes, hear with their ears, and understand with their heart …and return to the Lord, and I would heal them. Blessed are your eyes, because they see and blessed are your ears, because they hear.” 
 
1 Samuel 3 is about having ears to hear; about learning to hear the voice of the Lord. 
 
The book begins by the account of how the prophet Samuel came to be born. His mother, Hannah, had been barren for many years. That in and of itself would have been difficult to endure, but it was made much worse because her rival, Peninnah, the second wife of her husband, was provoking her bitterly, on purpose, just to irritate her because of her barrenness. 
 
Instead of retribution, of getting even, instead of adding drama to drama, Hannah prayed, she brought her burdens to the Lord. Year after year, when her family went to the Tabernacle in Shiloh, she prayed there, asking God for a son. 
 
God delayed in answering her prayers, but Hannah was steadfast and persisted in prayer. One day, as she was praying at the Tabernacle in Shiloh, she made a vow to the Lord, saying, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, if You will not forget me, but will give your maidservant a son, I will give him to the Lord, and he will be dedicated to the Lord all the days of his life.” 
 
God heard her prayers, and she gave birth to Samuel, which means, "heard of God." When the boy Samuel was weaned, she brought him to Shiloh and gave him to the priest, Eli, and Samuel served in the temple of Lord. Hanna visited him every year, bringing him a little robe she would make to give to him every year when she would come up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 
 
In chapter 3, the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord before the priest Eli. It's here Samuel begins his own personal relationship to the Lord. It’s here Samuel learns to have ears to hear. 
 
We know that his mother, Hannah, was a faithful, godly woman and it was by her faith that Samuel was dedicated to the Lord. In those years that Samuel was with Hannah, she spoke character and heart and faith into the boy, and it changed him, it gave him a foundation. 
 
But Samuel must come to his own personal relationship to the Lord. He must learn to have ears to hear and the heart to receive God’s word. For those who have ears to hear, will not only receive the words of God, but will take hold of them for himself, and he will live according to them. That’s the key to a beautiful life. 
 
God Reveals Himself Through His Word 
 
 Any word from the Lord was rare in those days, visions were infrequent. 
 
 Why was a word from the Lord rare in those days? Because no one was listening. No one cared to hear what God has to say. There was even corruption in the priesthood. 
 
 This took place during the time of the judges, one of the darkest periods in the history of Israel. Each man did what was right in his own eyes; therefore, they didn't care what was right in God's eyes. If each man did what was right in his own eyes, why listen to the word of the Lord? 
 
 The same is happening today. Each man does what is right in his own eyes today. When someone comes to the point where they want whatever they want, without regard for what God wants, they stop listening to the word of God, they stop reading the word, and they do not honor God in their lives.

The story of 1 Samuel takes place during the time of the Judges. The theme of the day was, “each man did what was right in his own eyes.” 
 
The nation was not following God, this brought trouble upon trouble. They were oppressed by their enemies. They were not in a good place spiritually, any word from the Lord was rare in those days and visions were infrequent. 
 
There was corruption in the priesthood as well. Eli was priest in Shiloh at that time. His two sons were corrupt, and they used their position in the priesthood corruptly. In other words, there were rats in the priesthood. And while Eli knew what they were doing, he did nothing to stop it. This was the condition in the nation of Israel when the events of chapter 1 take place. 
 
One of the great lessons out of this book is the same lesson we saw in Ruth and Boaz; you get to choose your own way. You don’t have to be like everyone else. If everyone else turns their back on God, you can be different, you can choose to follow God wholeheartedly. God always has a remnant. 
 
Jesus said, “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are they who find it.” Matthew 7:13-14. 
 
In this first chapter, we meet a man from the hill country of Ephraim named Elkanah. He is a good man, with a good heart, who follows after God. The man, however, had two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Whenever you read, “the man had two wives,” you can be sure that trouble will surely follow. 
 
Peninnah had children, but Hannah did not. The assumption could be that because Hannah was barren, Elkanah took Peninnah as a second wife to have children, to raise up an inheritor, to keep his land in his family. 
 
If a woman did not have children in that time, however, it was thought that God withheld children from her for some reason and she could be severely looked down upon. 
 
Elkanah loved Hannah very much, which very likely made Peninnah jealous. She would provoke Hannah bitterly, on purpose, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 
 
I. Don’t Let Anyone Cut in on You 
 
 Hannah's situation was difficult to tolerate. Her husband loved her more than he loved Peninnah. He gave her double portions because he loved her more. 
 
 That made matters worse. Peninnah deliberately provoked her bitterly, on purpose, to irritate her. 
 
 The pain of Peninnah’s taunts was made worse by the cultural belief that a woman was barren because God was against her. 
 
 How do you respond when someone deliberately, on purpose, irritates you? Hannah had a heart after God, but she had an agitator in her life. This deeply troubled her and she would weep and cry, but her faith was undisturbed. 
 
 Hannah is a great example of not letting anyone cut in on you. Don’t let anyone disturb your faith. Your soul may be troubled, but faith must remain strong. 
 
Galatians 5:7, You were running well; who cut in on you? Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 
 
A. Don’t retaliate 
 
 Hannah endured Peninnah's accusations and taunts, and this went on year after year, yet you do not see any evidence that she retaliated. 
 
 Hannah could have taunted Peninnah right back; Elkanah clearly loved Hannah more. 
 
 There is a life lesson here. Many find themselves in a conflict or in an unjust situation and respond by retaliating, by hurting the other person with bitter words, but not Hannah, there’s maturity in her faith. Her heart after God has given her character. 
 
 … Although I certainly understand; in the flesh, it's tempting to want to get even... I think everyone has been tempted to “even the score.”

ILLUS – A Bad Case of Spring Fever. 
 
1. Accountability. 
2. Whether we like it or not, all of us, without exception, will be held accountable for our choices. 
 
Hebrews 9:27, it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment 
 
3. And contrary to the way accountability is often applied today, when we stand before God, it will be impartial, thorough, just, and final. 
4. You see, Jesus Christ is coming back and the question for us is, “Are we ready for His return?” 
5. The good news is God wants us to be ready. 
6. God gave us His inspired, inerrant, infallible Word, the Bible, which tells us step-by-step how to be ready for Christ’s return. 
7. Tonight, we will learn how to be ready for Jesus’ return as we look to His words in Luke 12:35-59. 
Luke 12:35-59 
 
 
 
Context 
1. The last time we were together we noted that Jesus had been teaching a large crowd about how to live out one’s faith while living in this fallen world. 
2. Jesus’ teaching is very practical. For example, He tells us to guard our hearts against every form of greed “for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.” (15-21) 
3. Jesus also talked about worry and why we don’t need to be anxious about what we will eat, drink, or wear because our heavenly Father will faithfully meet our needs. (22-32) 
4. As Jesus continued to teach the crowd, He moved from the nuts and bolts of living by faith and avoiding the traps of greed and anxiety to being ready for His return at the end of the age. 
5. A cursory glance at His words might leave one wondering what’s the connection. 
6. But when we dig deeper into Jesus’ teaching, it becomes clear that the first two topics naturally, logically, and rightly flow into the third. 
7. You see, the person who is living out their faith in Jesus Christ is the same person who is prepared for the Son of Man’s return. The two go hand-in-hand. 
8. Now, towards the end of Luke 12, Jesus gives a sober warning about how important it is to discern the “signs of the times.” 
9. God gave Israel “signs” so they could discern that He had indeed sent His Son to Israel. 
10. In the same way, there will be “signs” so that our generation will be able to discern that the time of Christ’s return is near. 
11. The “signs of the times” that Jesus refers to in Matthew’s Gospel are that there will be many false prophets and false messiahs who will mislead many. 
12. There will be wars and rumors of wars. 
13. There will be famines and earthquakes that will grow greater in intensity and frequency as the events of the last days draw nearer. 
14. There will be a massive falling away, an apostasy, as unrighteousness and worldliness increases and the love of many grows cold. (Matthew 24:12) 
 
Transition – As we study Jesus’ teaching about the end times we must never forget a central point, we are accountable for our choices. 
• We must also remember that God loves us so He is warning us. 
• According to Luke 12, the first principle that Jesus gave regarding His return is. . . 
 
I. Be Dressed in Readiness 
 
• Over and over Jesus presses us with the importance of being dressed in readiness. 
• To emphasize the importance of His point, Jesus gave several illustrations to impress upon our souls the urgency of being dressed in readiness. 
• Each one of these word pictures is filled with insights which we would be wise to apply to our lives. 
 
A. Keep the fire of your soul lit 
1. Throughout the Bible the picture of a lamp that is lit and burning oil represents the life of the Holy Spirit in God’s people. (35) 
2. The Holy Spirit is the very life of God within us. 
a. The Holy Spirit is the One who transforms us so that we may love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Luke 10:27) 
b. By doing so, the Holy Spirit is preparing us for an eternity with God. 
3. And it is important for us to see that there is an important connection between our eternal destination and the preparation of the Holy Spirit in our lives. 
4. Our eternal destination and the Holy Spirit’s preparation go hand-in hand.

The book of Ruth stands out against the backdrop of the book of Judges, which is when the story takes place. The theme of Judges could be summarized, “Every man did what was right in his own eyes.” 
 
 Many in Israel turned their back on God, drawn to the so-called gods of the world, gods of licentiousness and worldliness in every form. The result was predictable, trouble upon trouble until finally, in desperation, they called out to God for help, and every time, God would send a deliverer. 
 
 It is against that background that the book of Ruth comes to the forefront. Though many turned away from the God of Israel, God always has a remnant. There will always still be some, if only a few, who stay faithful and walk with character, and faith, and integrity. That’s the theme of this book. 
 
 There are many life lessons we saw when we studied the earlier chapters. The story takes place near Bethlehem. In Hebrew, it means ‘house of bread.’ But there was a famine in the land. There was no bread. 
 
 Elimelech, who lived in Bethlehem during the time of the famine made a poor decision. Without praying, without asking God, the man sold his land; land that was to be the inheritance of his children, crossed the Jordan and went to the land of Moab with his wife and two sons. 
 
 This is a life lesson; if times are difficult, stay faithful. Don’t leave the place of God’s provision; the grass is not greener on the other side of the Jordan. I’ve been there and I know it’s true. 
 
 In Moab, Elimelech soon discovered for himself the grass was not greener there. His sons married Moabite wives, he himself then died, and his two sons also died, leaving his wife Naomi bereft and grieving, with no provisions, no future, and no hope. 
 
 Naomi decided to go home; it had been 10 long and difficult years. She heard there was bread once again in Bethlehem. But first, she dismissed her daughters-in-law, telling them to go to their own people, to find new husbands and make a new life for themselves. 
 
 One of her daughters-in-law, Orpah, kissed Naomi in tears, and took her leave to build a new life for herself. 
 
 But Ruth, her other daughter-in-law, refused to be separated from Naomi, giving one of the greatest speeches in the Old Testament. “Where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus, may the Lord do to me, and worse, if anything but death parts you and me.” 
 
In Ruth, another life lesson is revealed. Heart and character matter. It’s the very thing God uses to build a beautiful life. It’s a principle of the scriptures. 
Luke 6:36, 38, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful… Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure - pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.” 
 
Character matters, heart matters, faith matters. God will use it to build in you a beautiful life. When Ruth gleans in the field of Boaz, he takes notice of her. “Whose young woman is this?” He asks. “She is the young Moabite woman who returned with Naomi from the land of Moab.” 
 
Boaz then speaks kindly to Ruth, making sure she has water to quench her thirst and food and provisions. “Why have I found favor in your sight that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?” She asked. 
 
Boaz answered and said to her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband has been fully reported to me, and how you left your father and your mother and the land of your birth and came to people that you did not previously know. Now, may the Lord reward your work, and your wages be full from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to seek refuge.”

The Resurrection authenticates Jesus’ work on the cross! 
 
No verse in the Bible explains better what Jesus did on the cross than - 
 
2 Corinthians 5:21; He made Him who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 
 
This verse has 4 key phrases and truths about what Jesus did for us on the cross 
A. Christ our Passover 
 
Phrase #1 - The Bible says God made Him who knew no sin. 
 
It tells us the greatest person in history, Him who knew no sin, is obviously, the Lord Jesus Christ 
 
The Bible is uncompromising in this 2 Corinthians claim that Jesus had no sin. 
 
Hebrews 4:15; For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin. 
 
John 8:46; Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 
 
He is talking to His enemies here, not His friends… 
 
• Bible tells us he frequented the temple in Jerusalem all the time, but the Bible never tells us He offered any sacrifice for His sin because He didn’t need to! 
 
• Bible tells us Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them - but He nev-er prayed, Father forgive me - because He didn’t have to. 
 
I Corinthians 5:7; Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. 
 
Our Passover, Jesus Christ, was sacrificed for us! 
• Passover is all about God’s judgement of Pharaoh and the Egyptians in the 10th plaque, but God’s judgement passed over the Israelites who were covered by the blood of the Pass-over lamb on their door posts. 
 
• In the same way, people who are covered by the blood of Je-sus Christ as their only payment for sin will see that God will pass over their sin in judgement just like He did for the Israel-ites. 
 
Exodus 12:5; Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 
 
The point is for Jesus to be the Passover lamb for the entire hu-man race, who’s blood can protect every person alive from God’s judgement for sin, He has to be without defect - without sin of any kind - exactly how the Bible says that Jesus is. 
 
B. By His wounds we are healed 
 
Phrase #2 - God made him who knew no sin….to become sin on our behalf. 
 
• The greatest transaction in history - carried out by the greatest person in history - He became sin on our behalf. 
 
Isaiah 53:6; All of us, like sheep, have gone astray, 
Each of us has turned to his own way; 
But the Lord has caused the wrongdoing of us all 
To fall on Him. 
 
1 Peter 2:24; and He Himself brought our sins in His body up on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for right-eousness; by His wounds you were healed. 
 
He Himself bore our sins… 
 
• A divine transaction which you and I will not ever fully un-derstand, God took the sins of the world and transferred them onto Jesus Christ so that He paid for my sins, He paid for your sins, as He hung there on the cross. 
 
• It’s ok if you and I never understand this fully - in order for this transaction to be mine or to be yours - you don’t have to understand it fully - we don’t have to explain it - all we have to do for this transaction to be ours - is to believe & trust it! 
 
II. Become Righteous in God’s Sight 
 
Phrase #3 - God made Him who knew no sin - to become sin on our behalf - - That we might become righteous in God’s sight.

What is the greatest event in all human history? The answers people gave to that question are all over the board. 
 
Some say it was the invention of farming, others say, the invention of the wheel, or developing the alphabet, or building the great pyramids. Some even said it was when Al Gore invented the Internet. However, while all those are important, the greatest event in all human history was the resurrection of Jesus Christ! 
 
It is the greatest event in all human history because it answers man’s greatest need. In other words, it’s the one event that doesn’t just impact how you live today, it’s the one event that impacts how you live forever. 
 
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die… Do you believe this?” Someone might ask, “How can this be? Surely everyone dies. 
 
Of course, people die; I know that very well. When our daughter was killed several years ago, it was the most difficult thing we’ve ever endured, but I know this, it was her body that died. Her soul lives and the reason her soul lives is because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ! He defeated death and gave her eternal life when she asked Jesus into her heart as Lord and Savior. 
 
Everyone dies a physical death, the statistics on death are pretty impressive; something like one out of every one people die physically. The older you get the more you understand that. It’s harder to grasp when you’re young. 
 
Some take the perspective of that song made famous by the Rolling Stones, “Time is on My Side.” Although if you’ve seen Mick Jagger and Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones lately, you would have to say that time has definitely not been on their side. Let’s just say that if they went shopping at Forever 21 they would be escorted out. 
 
No, time is not on your side, time is against you. You don’t know when your time is up or how much time you have left. You could die today. Someone might respond, “Thanks, Pastor, very encouraging. I’m glad I invited friends.” 
 
Here’s my answer; time may not be on your side, but God most certainly is. God loves you so much that He gave His only begotten Son so that whosoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life. 
 
Let today be your day. I’m going to give you the opportunity to get right with God today. Today we celebrate the greatest event in all human history, the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s also the greatest Sign of All Time. In other words, it’s personal. How will you respond? 
 
In Matthew 12, the Jewish leaders, the scribes and Pharisees, asked Jesus for some kind of sign to prove who He was. … And when God gives the greatest sign of all time you must decide what to do with it… 
 
I. A Sign is Given to Strengthen Faith 
 
 Verse 38 --The Jewish leaders asked Jesus for a sign, some kind of miracle, so He might prove who He is to them -- because they did not believe. “Prove it,” they were saying, “we don’t believe You.” 
 
 Jesus responded by saying two things. First, that an evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign. And second, that no sign would be given but the sign of Jonah the prophet. 
 
 Each part of His answer is important so let's take them each separately. 
 
A. A sign is for those who lack faith 
 In the scriptures, a sign is some kind of evidence or miracle to prove or confirm what God is saying; or it can be something to remind them of God’s power and presence. 
 There are people today who seek for some kind of sign from God to direct their lives. But that’s more like seeking God for an omen, which God doesn’t do either. 
 God used signs in the scriptures; and He used them to strengthen faith. 
 When God called Moses to deliver the people of Israel out of the slavery of Egypt, Moses said, “What if they will not believe me and what if they say, ‘The Lord has not appeared to you.’?” God then gave Moses signs to bear witness, to prove that it was God who had spoken.

We’re going to look at a story about the Apostle Paul and how he stood firm in the face of powers against him, to contend for the truth, the Gospel and bless others along with way. 
 
I found this story personally intriguing because, like many of you, I’ve encountered the power of resistance to the Gospel and the positive power associated with trusting God with the gifts and influence I’ve had. 
 
• I grew up just outside a powerful place; Washington DC - a city synonymous with power & influence, unfortunately the abuse of both. 
• I’ve seen power & influence used in a positive way in busi-ness and unfortunately a not so positive way. 
• As a follower of Jesus, I’ve seen the blessing of using God’s power of the Holy Spirit and the power of His word, in my life as a husband, father and ministry leader. 
 
We are all experiencing a very American Gov’t topic - Power & Influence - and we see in this Bible account a man's love for power that self-destructed his life. 
 
From this story, we will cover how you and I, as followers of Jesus Christ, living in our day, can live with power & influence that doesn’t ruin God’s best for our lives. 
 
We begin with Paul & Barnabas - pastors in the Antioch church - God called them to be the first missionaries of the day - this is Paul’s 1st missionary journey. 
 
I. Contend Earnestly For The Faith 
 
3 things we learn initially: 
• Where they went (MAP) - Cypress is Barnabas’ homeland. 
• John Mark was along as their helper. 
• Barnabas and Paul initially went to the Jewish Synagogues first - we know this from historic writings and that there was a large community of Jews in Salamis. 
• The significance became a life-long strategy for Paul. First place he visited was the local synagogues. 
 
Romans 1:16; For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 
 
Paul believed they deserved this courtesy. 
 
• Paul knew of their familiarity with OT scriptures, so he didn’t think he’d have to explain everything to them. 
• Just needed to show them as Jews who Jesus was and what he promised. 
• Paul’s expectation was the Jews would believe - didn’t always work did it? 
• He repeats this strategy in every city he goes to. 
 
A. Trust the scriptures reach 
 
Capital city Politician named Sergius Paulus - and Elymas…a false prophet. 
 
For those who love history and how it further proves the scrip-tures; Sergios Paulus is recorded in Roman records in Cypress - serving as proconsul - a chief magistrate or governor - exactly when Paul and Barnabas showed up - recorded in Roman rec-ords ~ 49AD. 
 
The Proconsul, an intelligent man - wanted to hear the word of God. Let’s hear what they have to say…he was interest-ed…implication clear - he was paying attention! 
 
When you share the Gospel, you have experienced this, some are more interested and engaging with you. Trust the power and influence of the scriptures - Every time! 
 
B. Trust the Holy Spirit to expose darkness 
 
When we share the gospel, we engage the enemy of souls in spiritual combat, so we must be prepared for spiritual battle. 
 
Hebrews 4:12; For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The story of Ruth and Boaz is one of the most beautiful stories in the Old Testament. First, it’s a story of redemption. It pictures and prophetically looks forward to our redemption in Jesus Christ. 
 
 It’s also a love story. The story of Ruth and Boaz has become a literary classic. Students of literature study this book because it is beautifully written in both poetry and prose. It is a love story, not only of Ruth and Boaz, but also of God’s love for you and me. 
 
 However, the story of Ruth and Boaz also reveals a deeper truth of how God builds a beautiful life. We know God’s heart is to pour His favor and blessing on those who believe in Him and walk according to His purpose. But how does God build a beautiful life? How does God’s sovereign hand move in such a way that He constructs a life that is beautiful and honoring to Himself? The answer is seen in this beautiful story. 
 
The book of Ruth was written during the time of the Judges. Each man did what was right in his own eyes. But God always has a remnant. There will always be some, if even a few, who hold fast to their faith in God. The words of Joshua still ring true, “Choose you this day whom you will serve, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” 
 
 It’s a life lesson for today. Each person must decide how they’re going to live. Some do what’s right in their own eyes and live with their back turned toward God. Others choose God and walk with Him in the course of their life. And those who do will come to discover that God is a rewarder of those who seek Him. 
 But not only is He the rewarder of those who seek Him, He is the builder of a beautiful life. In this story, you see how God does that, how He builds a beautiful life. His sovereign hand moves as he takes faith and character and uses it to construct a life that’s beautiful. 
 
I. Nothing Just Happens 
 
 There was a famine in the land. But from Deuteronomy Moses said that if Israel went through a famine it was because their hearts had become hard, and God was trying to bring them back to Himself. 
 
 In other words, the famine just didn't happen, God was using this in their lives for the purpose of stirring them up and bringing them back. 
 
 This story unfolded during the time of the Judges. When people turned their hearts away from God and toward the gods of the world, He allowed difficulty and trouble to come into their lives so they would call out to Him again and return. In other words, nothing just happens. 
 
A. Stay faithful in difficult times 
 
 Because of the famine, a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to live in the land of Moab with his wife and two sons. 
 
 Bethlehem means ‘house of bread.’ Here they are in the house of bread and there’s a famine in the land. They leave the place which God had given as their inheritance and go to Moab. 
 
 Here’s a life lesson; the grass is not greener on the other side of the Jordan. If life is difficult, if there is a famine, don’t walk away from God, stay, and stay faithful. 
 
 Moab is not the land God had given them. It wasn’t the land of promise. In fact, it’s a picture of the world. This is how God spoke of Moab… 
 
Psalm 60:7-8, “Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim also is the helmet of My head; Judah is My scepter. Moab is My washbowl; and over Edom I shall throw My shoe,” says the Lord. 
 
 The wash bowl is where the dirty water collects after you’ve washed something. God makes it quite clear how he feels about Moab. 
 
 Yes, life was difficult in Bethlehem but stepping out of God's will is not the way to an easier life. Naomi will discover was that life in Bethlehem was not as bad as she thought. 
 
 Naomi said, "I went out full, but the Lord has brought me back empty." 
 
 It’s a life lesson; there was a famine, but she was still blessed. She had her husband and her two sons. Count your blessings and thank God for what you do have… and keep walking faithfully.

1. Spiritual Warfare has been and still is a topic of great interest for Christians and non-Christians alike. 
 
ILLUS – Frank Peretti’s best-selling book, This Present Darkness. 
 
2. What does the Bible have to say about Spiritual Warfare? 
3. Is it a winnable war? Will good ultimately prevail over evil? If so, how? 
4. And what role do we, as Christians, have to play in the battle? 
5. Tonight, we will look to the words of our Savior for the answers in Luke 11, when Jesus not only gave The Winning Strategy for Spiritual Warfare but also offered the sign which confirms our God wins. 
 
Luke 11:14-32 
 
Context 
1. As Jesus continued towards Jerusalem from the northern region of Galilee, the crowds grew greater in number. 
2. The crowd was comprised of three groups, each with their own opinion of Jesus. 
a. Some thought Jesus to be the Messiah. 
b. Others were convinced that Jesus was the devil incarnate. 
c. Still others wanted to test Jesus further so they demanded a sign before they jumped on the Jesus bandwagon. 
 
APPL – The truth is, what we believe about Jesus makes all the difference in the world, in this life and in the life to come. 
 
Transition – In fact, it is the key to having the only Winning Strategy for Spiritual Warfare, which is. . . 
 
I. Let Jesus Be Your Strongest Strong Man 
 
• The Bible makes it clear that there has been and is a spiritual battle for the souls of those made in God’s image. 
• From Genesis 3 to Revelation 20, the Bible provides us with glimpses into the reality and nature of this epic battle between God’s heavenly host and Satan’s minions. 
• Here in Luke 11, we have an account of one such battle, where Jesus Christ casts out a demon which had made a man mute. 
• We’re told that once the man was liberated from the hideous presence of his nefarious possessor “the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed.” (14) 
• Though some marveled at what they had just witnessed, others sought to quickly dampen the crowd’s enthusiasm by accusing Jesus of casting out demons “by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.” (15) 
• Still others seized upon the opportunity to test Jesus further so they demanded He give them another “sign from heaven.” (16) 
• Jesus responds to both groups, the accusers and the testers, with powerful insight and wisdom. 
 
Transition – For His accusers, Jesus pulled back the veil and revealed what the deliverance of the mute demoniac really meant. 
• That Jesus is the strongest strong man. 
• Which also reveals a facet of the divine purpose for why Jesus came. . . 
 
A. Jesus came to set Satan’s captives free 
1. During His ministry, Jesus’ very presence confronted the demonic forces which possessed, oppressed, and tormented the souls of those He came to save. 
2. In fact, though the demons may have tried to conceal their grotesque identities and their murderous activities, there was nowhere for them to hide when Jesus arrived on the scene. 
3. That’s why the Gospels record that Jesus set free so many demoniacs. 
4. Now, it is also important for us to note that Jesus acknowledges the existence of Satan and his army of demons. 
5. First, Jesus acknowledged that Satan, also known as “Lucifer,” the “serpent,” the “devil,” the “dragon,” the “accuser of the brethren,” and “Beelzebul,” which means “the lord of the flies,” does exist. (18) 
6. Second, Jesus acknowledged that Satan has an army of fallen angels. 
a. This army is comprised of a third of the heavenly host which rebelled with Lucifer against God (Revelation 12:4). 
b. These fallen angels are also called “demons” or “unclean spirits.” 
7. Third, verses 17-23 confirm that spiritual warfare is real. 
a. In many ways it’s the battle behind the battles. 
b. Paul speaks of this battle behind the battles in his letter to the saints in Ephesus. 
Ephesians 6:12, For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the 
spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Samson is most famous for his strength, but the greatest lessons in his life come from his failures. The greatest lesson, however, comes from chapter 16; your past doesn’t have to define your future. 
 
Perhaps up to this point your life has been a series of failures, mistakes, or of sins and disappointments. But the final chapter has not yet been written. Your past doesn’t have to define your future. Before God can redefine your future, however, He must bring you to the end of yourself. God wants you to come to the end of self-sufficiency. 
 
In John 15, Jesus spoke a deep truth, “Without Me, you can do nothing.” The problem is that verse is easy to read and easy to say, but it’s a whole different thing to live that way. 
 
When you consider the story of Samson’s life and read of his epic failures, it could lead one to wonder how this man ever made it into Hebrews 11, that famous chapter that lists the great heroes of faith. 
 
This much is certain, Samson didn’t make it into Hebrews 11 because of his failures, he made it into that chapter because his failures didn’t define his life. 
 
 Samson began well; he had everything going for him at the first. God called him and set him apart for His purpose even while he was in the womb. 
 
 His mother was barren, but the angel of the Lord met her and said, “Behold, you shall conceive and give birth to a son, and no razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines.” 
 
The Nazirite vow is found in Numbers chapter 6. It is a special vow of dedication to the Lord. It’s the vow of being set apart, of being dedicated to God and His purpose. 
 
When a man or woman takes this vow of the Nazir, they are to separate themselves unto the Lord. During the time of their dedication, they are to abstain from wine, and strong drink, and anything to do with grapes. They must keep themselves separate from anything that is dead, and they must not cut their hair. 
 
No razor coming upon his head would be the secret to Samson’s uniqueness. He would have the strength of many men. If he lived in our modern age, he would be a celebrity; a man’s man in every way; and the desire of women. 
 
But God set him apart for His purpose; a unique calling, a divine assignment; he would begin to deliver Israel from the oppression of the Philistines. 
 
I imagine his mother explaining to Samson when he was young; how she was barren, how the angel of the Lord met her and promised that her son that would begin to deliver Israel, that he would be set apart, dedicated for a divine purpose and that even while he was in the womb, she lived set apart for God. 
 
In our modern, New Testament times, we don’t have such a thing as a Nazirite vow, but we do have people that are set apart unto God. It’s you; you are a set apart people. That’s what it means to be sanctified in Christ Jesus. 
 
And if you have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, you have been set apart for a unique purpose and a unique calling on your life. 
 
We have a saying, “Where God guides, He provides.” It means that when God sets you apart for His purpose, He will equip you and sustain you in that purpose. 
 
In the case of Samson, it meant the Spirit of the Lord coming upon him mightily so that he had the strength and power to accomplish that purpose. He had power against his enemies because the Spirit of God came upon him. 
 
I suggest that when you live sanctified, or in other words, set apart, and you walk in the purpose for which God called you, the same Holy Spirit that came upon Samson resides in you and will equip you for God’s purpose and calling. 
 
However, if you are not set apart, if you lose your set apart-ness, in other words, if there’s no difference, you live just like everyone else in the world, I suggest you will not have the Holy Spirit power to accomplish God’s purpose in your life.

3. Yet, it's a simple concept which can also generate a lot of questions, questions like. . . 
a. What should I say to God? 
b. Will God ever get tired of me asking? 
c. How often should I ask? Is there a minimum or a maximum number of requests? 
d. What should I do when it feels like God isn’t listening? 
e. And, what if I don’t like God’s answer? 
4. Truly the list could go on and on, but the question is, “Are there any answers to these questions?” 
5. I find it encouraging that the answer is a resounding “Yes!” 
6. Tonight, we will look to the words of our Savior for the answers in Luke 11, when a disciple asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray. . .” (1) 
7. For in Luke 11, we will learn what to say, how often to ask, and what to do when it feels like God isn’t listening. 
8. Finally, we will learn why we can trust God even when our prayers are not answered the way we had hoped. 
 
Luke 11:1-13 
 
1. When we come to Luke 11, there has been a major shift in Jesus’ ministry; He was transitioning His ministry from Galilee to Jerusalem in preparation for His crucifixion and resurrection. 
 
Luke 9:51, When the days were approaching for His 
ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem. . . 
 
2. It’s also important to notice the progression in chapters ten and eleven of Luke’s Gospel. 
3. In Luke 10:25-37, Jesus taught about the kind of relationship we should have with our neighbors with the Parable of the Good Samaritan. 
4. Then in Luke 10:38-42, Jesus taught about the kind of relationship we should have with Him through His gentle interactions with two sisters, Martha and Mary. 
5. Now in Luke 11:1-13, Jesus is going to teach us about the kind of relationship we should have with our heavenly Father through prayer. 
 
Please notice this important principle concerning prayer. . . 
 
I. Our Heavenly Father Wants Us to Pray to Him 
 
• I must confess that I’m struck when I read this passage because our heavenly Father is speaking through His Son, Jesus, to us about prayer. 
• It’s like God is saying to us, “I’ve been listening to people pray for many years and I have a few things I would like to share with you about prayer.” 
• It’s also important to see our Father’s heart for us. 
• Our heavenly Father wants us to pray to Him. 
• And please notice that Jesus assumed His people would pray for He said, “When you pray. . .” (2) 
• Jesus assumed that His disciples would understand the importance of spending time with our heavenly Father in prayer. 
• Here, Jesus offered deep insights into the kind of relationship that our Father desires to have with those who seek Him in prayer. 
• These thirteen verses can be divided into three main sections: 
o Jesus’ model for prayer (2-4) 
o Jesus’ parable about prayer (5-8) 
o Jesus’ promise when we pray (9-13) 
• In verses 2-4, Jesus’ model for prayer is an example or a pattern for us to follow. 
• It was not intended to be repeated from memory without engaging one’s heart and mind. 
• Jesus’ model for our prayer includes five requests. 
o Two requests are directed towards God, acknowledging His uniqueness and eternal plan. 
o Three requests are directed towards our needs for God’s provision, forgiveness, and protection. 
 
First, when you pray. . . 
 
A. Begin your prayers by honoring the Father 
1. Jesus began with an invitation, really an upward call of sorts, to have an intimate relationship with Father God because He truly is our heavenly Father. 
 
Our prayers are directed to Father God. 
2. The word “Father” is similar to our English word “Daddy.” 
3. By using the word “Daddy,” Jesus was revealing that His disciples have a close, familial relationship with God the Father through Him. 
a. Through Jesus, Father God is not a stranger. 
b. Through Jesus, our heavenly Father is our “Daddy.” 
 
Romans 8:14-16, For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God

Today we meet Samson, perhaps the most well-known of all judges in this book. Samson is famous for two things; first, for his incredible physical strength, and secondly, he is known for his incredible weakness. 
 
 You can learn a lot from watching the strengths and successes of others, but you can also learn from watching their failures. The one who is wise will take hold of the strengths and avoid the failures. 
 
 The story of Samson is intriguing, however, because it reveals an aspect of God’s heart that’s important to understand; how God can use failure for His purpose and glory. 
 
 We know God uses strength of faith and strength of character for His glory. The examples are numerous; Noah was a man of righteousness, Enoch walked with God, Abraham was a man of faith, Joseph was a man of character and integrity, God spoke to Moses as a man speaks to his friend, if we had time, we could mention Joshua, Caleb, Ruth and Boaz, David, Hezekiah, Josiah, Daniel, and many others. 
 
 There are also examples of God using people who are failures for His glory. Noah got drunk and humiliated himself, Abraham told a half lie, his son Isaac told a full lie, and his son Jacob was a liar. Moses killed an Egyptian. David’s sin with Bathsheba is infamous, Peter denied Jesus 3 times. The disciples abandoned Jesus. In the book of Acts, Saul persecuted the church due to his misplaced zeal, and John Mark quit on their first missionary journey. And that’s just for starters. 
 
 Moses was 120 years old when he died, and his life can be divided into 40-year segments. DL Moody once said, “Moses spent the first 40 years of his life thinking he was somebody. He spent the second 40 years learning he was a nobody. He spent the third 40 years discovering what God can do with a failure and a nobody who trusts in God.” 
 
God can use failure in your life. He can use it to get your attention, to cause you to reevaluate your priorities, to open your eyes to your weakness, to bring humility and to transform character. 
 
I remember reading the story of a promising junior executive at IBM who involved the company in a risky venture that resulted in a $10 million loss. When the CEO called the nervous junior executive into his office, the young man said humbly, “I suppose you want my resignation.” The CEO replied, “You can’t be serious. We’ve just spent $10 million on your education!” 
 
 The story of Samson is a story of God using both victories and failures for His glory. 
 
In chapter 10, we read that Israel had once again turned their heart away from God and God had given them over to their enemies, the Philistines and Midianites. The Midianites oppressed Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan, the Philistines from the south. 
 
In chapter 13 God begins to bring help for Israel from the oppression of the Philistines. Samson will be the beginning of that help, but they will not truly be free from the Philistine oppression until David, the king, comes onto the scene. 
 
 We recently read stories of how God used those who were born and raised with every disadvantage, but Samson is born with every advantage. 
 
His mother was barren, but the angel of the Lord appeared to her and told her she would have a son who would begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines and that he would be a Nazir, a Nazirite from birth, so she should keep the Nazirite vow while she carried him in the womb. 
 
 When he was born, the Lord blessed him and gave him extraordinary strength and courage. Why then did he fail? The lessons of Samson's failure are for us to take to heart. 
 
I. Honor His Name as Wonderful 
 
 Verse 17 – Samson’s father said to the angel of the Lord, “What is your name so we may honor you when your words come to pass?” 
 
 The angel responded, “Why do ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?” 
 
 Manoah’s heart is right, he wants to honor his name. But the name is too wonderful, it is high, for there is no other name given amongst men by which we must be saved.
