Today we meet Samson, perhaps the most well-known of all judges in this book. Samson is famous for two things; first, for his incredible physical strength, and secondly, he is known for his incredible weakness. 
 
 You can learn a lot from watching the strengths and successes of others, but you can also learn from watching their failures. The one who is wise will take hold of the strengths and avoid the failures. 
 
 The story of Samson is intriguing, however, because it reveals an aspect of God’s heart that’s important to understand; how God can use failure for His purpose and glory. 
 
 We know God uses strength of faith and strength of character for His glory. The examples are numerous; Noah was a man of righteousness, Enoch walked with God, Abraham was a man of faith, Joseph was a man of character and integrity, God spoke to Moses as a man speaks to his friend, if we had time, we could mention Joshua, Caleb, Ruth and Boaz, David, Hezekiah, Josiah, Daniel, and many others. 
 
 There are also examples of God using people who are failures for His glory. Noah got drunk and humiliated himself, Abraham told a half lie, his son Isaac told a full lie, and his son Jacob was a liar. Moses killed an Egyptian. David’s sin with Bathsheba is infamous, Peter denied Jesus 3 times. The disciples abandoned Jesus. In the book of Acts, Saul persecuted the church due to his misplaced zeal, and John Mark quit on their first missionary journey. And that’s just for starters. 
 
 Moses was 120 years old when he died, and his life can be divided into 40-year segments. DL Moody once said, “Moses spent the first 40 years of his life thinking he was somebody. He spent the second 40 years learning he was a nobody. He spent the third 40 years discovering what God can do with a failure and a nobody who trusts in God.” 
 
God can use failure in your life. He can use it to get your attention, to cause you to reevaluate your priorities, to open your eyes to your weakness, to bring humility and to transform character. 
 
I remember reading the story of a promising junior executive at IBM who involved the company in a risky venture that resulted in a $10 million loss. When the CEO called the nervous junior executive into his office, the young man said humbly, “I suppose you want my resignation.” The CEO replied, “You can’t be serious. We’ve just spent $10 million on your education!” 
 
 The story of Samson is a story of God using both victories and failures for His glory. 
 
In chapter 10, we read that Israel had once again turned their heart away from God and God had given them over to their enemies, the Philistines and Midianites. The Midianites oppressed Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan, the Philistines from the south. 
 
In chapter 13 God begins to bring help for Israel from the oppression of the Philistines. Samson will be the beginning of that help, but they will not truly be free from the Philistine oppression until David, the king, comes onto the scene. 
 
 We recently read stories of how God used those who were born and raised with every disadvantage, but Samson is born with every advantage. 
 
His mother was barren, but the angel of the Lord appeared to her and told her she would have a son who would begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines and that he would be a Nazir, a Nazirite from birth, so she should keep the Nazirite vow while she carried him in the womb. 
 
 When he was born, the Lord blessed him and gave him extraordinary strength and courage. Why then did he fail? The lessons of Samson's failure are for us to take to heart. 
 
I. Honor His Name as Wonderful 
 
 Verse 17 – Samson’s father said to the angel of the Lord, “What is your name so we may honor you when your words come to pass?” 
 
 The angel responded, “Why do ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?” 
 
 Manoah’s heart is right, he wants to honor his name. But the name is too wonderful, it is high, for there is no other name given amongst men by which we must be saved.

How much of your life has been consumed by worry? 
2. When it comes to worry, it’s been said that the average person will spend. . . 
a. 40% of their time worrying about things which will never happen. 
b. 30% of their time worrying about their past which can’t be changed. 
c. 12% of their time worrying about criticism from others, most of which is untrue. 
d. 10% of their time worrying about their health, which gets worse with stress. 
e. 8% of their time worrying about real problems which they will actually face. 
 
ILLUS – Travel Insurance 
 
3. Worry is not a virtue. 
4. Nor do people typically wear their worry like a “Badge of Honor.” 
5. Yet worry wears easy, at first that is. 
6. What I mean is, worry is easy to put on. 
7. But once you put worry on, it’s like a tight pair of skinny jeans. . . very difficult to take it off. 
8. So, what is the answer for worry? 
9. Tonight, we will look to the words of our Savior for the answer in Luke 10, from the famous story about two sisters, Martha and Mary. 
10. For in Luke 10, we will learn how to take off the robe of worry and put on the mantle of faith. 
 
Luke 10:38-42 
 
As I mentioned the last time we were together, when we arrive at Luke 10, there is another major shift in Jesus’ ministry; Jesus was transitioning His ministry from the region of Galilee in the north to Jerusalem. 
 
Luke 9:51, When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem. . . 
 
2. As Jesus nears Jerusalem, Luke shifts the focus of his Gospel to a meal in the home of Martha, the sister of Mary and Lazarus, the man whom Jesus raised from the dead. 
3. The three siblings lived in a village called Bethany which was located a few miles east of Jerusalem. 
 
What happened during the meal in Martha’s home reveals the first part of Jesus’ answer for worry. . . 
 
Serve Christ Wholeheartedly 
 
• Martha had invited Jesus to her home for a meal, along with His entire entourage. (38) 
• Martha immediately went to work, preparing a meal for Jesus; a meal she had hoped would be fit for the King of kings. 
• This would be no small task. 
• Martha needed help and lots of it. 
• Surely, Mary, her sister would rise up and help Martha impress, I mean, bless Jesus. . . right? 
• Nope. The moment Jesus sat down to teach; Mary sat down too, right at Jesus’ feet to absorb His every word. 
• Poor Martha was left to do all the heavy lifting alone. 
 
 Now, before we point fingers at Martha and get all in a huff because of her eventual meltdown, I believe Martha should be commended for her desire to serve the Lord. 
• It is right and commendable when Christians want to serve the Lord. 
• In fact, Jesus is called Lord for a reason because He is supremely worthy of our trust, loyalty, and service. 
• The Apostle Paul served Christ wholeheartedly. 
 
Colossians 1:28-29, We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me. 
 
• Well, how is serving Christ wholeheartedly an answer for worry? 
• Because when we serve Christ wholeheartedly it offers us the opportunity to take our eyes off of ourselves and put them on Jesus. 
• Too many people spend too much of their lives focused on themselves. 
• But when we fix our eyes on Jesus and serve Him wholeheartedly our lives are filled with meaning and purpose, worry fades away. 
• It was true for the Apostle Paul and the Lord wants it to be true for us as well. 
• Serve Christ wholeheartedly. 
 
 But may I offer a word of caution? When you serve Christ wholeheartedly. . . 
 
A. Serve Christ’s agenda not your own 
1. Martha frantically looked around. . . where was Mary? 
2. Suddenly her eyes locked on her target. 
3. Martha shook her head in disbelief. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. 
4. Mary, her beloved sister, was sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to Him teach! 
5. Martha could never pull off a meal fit for the King of kings all by herself. 
6. Martha began to huff and puff; she was ready to blow her sister down. 
7. Now, Luke gives us an important insight into Martha’s heart. 
8. The word “distracted” in verse 40 means “to be pulled away” by something. 
9. What was pulling at Martha? Her agenda!

We come to Judges 11 and the story of Jephthah of Gilead. Jephthah’s story is a story both of victory and tragedy. The story unfolds on the east side of the Jordan River. 
 
Jephthah was of the tribe of Manasseh. Manasseh was divided so that half lived east of the Jordan River and the other half-tribe lived on the west side of the Jordan River. 
 
 When Joshua led the people of Israel, they did well. They followed the Lord fully. But after Joshua and the leaders with him died, there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor the work which God had done for Israel. And instead of following the Lord fully as their fathers had done, they turned instead to the gods of the world and their hearts fell away from God. 
 
 Where there is no relationship, there is no foundation for faith. They became weakened spiritually, and eventually, they became weakened as a nation. As a result, they encountered troubles upon trouble until they reached the point of crying out to God. When God heard their cries, He would send a deliverer, or in other words a judge, to rescue Israel. 
 
In the verses leading up to this story, in chapter 10, the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, serving the gods of the world around them. The anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and their enemies afflicted and crushed the sons of Israel for 18 years. 
 
That’s one of the tragedies of the story, that it took 18 years before Israel cried out to God for help. Have you ever met someone who stubbornly held on to their worldly ways, even while their world was crashing around them? 
When Israel cried out to the Lord, He heard their cries and sent a deliverer. The life lesson is this, even if someone stubbornly holds on to their worldly ways, when they finally turn their heart and call out to God, He gladly receives them, He gladly welcomes them home. 
 
The Ammonites gathered to attack the sons of Israel in Gilead, so the sons of Israel in that area also gathered. But they had no leader over them. That’s how Jephthah comes into the story. He was called to be the deliverer and the Lord used him to bring a great victory for those tribes of Israel on the east side of the Jordan River. 
 
 The tragedy of Jephthah’s story is that early in his life he was rejected by his brothers. They all shared the same father, but Jephthah was the son of a harlot so they drove him out so he would have no inheritance among them. But when the Ammonites gathered to attack, they turned to Jephthah for help. God chooses the rejected and outcast for His glory. 
 
 However, Jephthah is famous for another tragedy in his life. After he was placed as head over the men of Gilead, he made a tragic vow unto God. That vow becomes a central theme to the text we are studying today. In fact, the victory over the sons of Ammon is almost insignificant in comparison to this vow Jephthah made to the Lord. 
 
 His vow was that if God would give the sons of Ammon into his hand, then it would be that whatever came out of the door of his house to meet him when he returned in victory would be the Lord's. But what or who should come of his house to greet him? but his own daughter. 
 
I. God Uses Those who are Nobodies 
 
 Jephthah is the son of a harlot. That’s not typically a foundation for greatness. He’s the oldest, however, so by rights, he should be given a double portion of the inheritance and a position of authority over his brothers. 
 
 His brothers weren’t having any of that, however, so they banded together and drove him out. Jephthah fled to the land of Tob. 
 This is where many relate to the story because they, too, are ashamed of their past, or people have shamed you and cast you out. Perhaps God uses people like Jephthah so people like you and me can see the heart of God revealed. 
 
 God delights to take nobodies and use them for His glory…. But He also transforms them…

When Fred Rogers launched his famous children’s show, Mister Roger’s Neighborhood in 1966, our country was in the midst of a cultural conflict. 
2. Tensions were high. Citizens were divided. Our nation was on edge. 
3. In the midst of those fractured times, Mr. Rogers opened his program with a song that not only defined a children’s show, it served as a reminder to a divided nation of a deeper truth, one which transcends politics, race, or gender, that we are neighbors. 
4. “Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won’t you be my neighbor?” 
5. Yet, well before Mr. Rogers ever sang those words, Jesus Christ had defined what it means to be a “good neighbor” almost two thousand years earlier. 
6. Today, tensions are high. Citizens are divided. Our nation is on edge. 
7. What role can the Church play in healing a country that is literally being torn apart? 
8. Where do we begin? How can people like you and me make a difference? 
9. Tonight, we will look to the words of our Savior for the answer in Luke 10. 
10. For in Luke 10, we will learn where to begin and how we can make a difference by being a good neighbor. 
 
Luke 10:25-37 
 
Context 
1. As I mentioned last week, when we arrive at Luke 10, there is another major shift in Jesus’ ministry. 
2. After Jesus had sent the twelve apostles to proclaim the Gospel (9:1-6), had fed the 5,000 with five loaves and two fish (9:12-17), had heard Peter’s confession that He is “The Christ of God” (9:18-22), and had been transfigured on the mountain (9:28-36), we are told in. . . 
 
Luke 9:51, When the days were approaching for His 
ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem. . . 
 
3. To prepare the cities along the route for His arrival, Jesus selected seventy men to spread the news, “the kingdom of God has come near.” (9) 
4. After Jesus’ advance team returned to share their report with Jesus, Luke shifts the focus of his Gospel account to a lawyer who “stood up” to put Jesus to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (25) 
5. Now, it may seem that this question is unrelated to the questions were are trying to answer. 
6. But in reality, the answer to this question lays the foundation for how to be a good neighbor. 
 
Transition – The first principle is. . . 
 
I. Being a Good Neighbor Begins with Love 
 
• In Jesus’ day, Jewish lawyers were experts in interpreting the Mosaic Law, the first five books of the Old Testament. 
• So this lawyer wanted to test Jesus to evaluate His knowledge of the Mosaic Law. 
• He asked Jesus, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 
• Or to frame the question in modern-day terms, “What must I do to be saved?” 
• As we will see, the lawyer’s question was not born out of a humble, teachable, sincere heart. 
• He was looking for a reason to dismiss Jesus, to label Jesus, or even to accuse Jesus. 
• Jesus masterfully answered the lawyer’s question with a question of His own which, in effect, put the lawyer on trial. 
• With this pivot, not only was the lawyer’s knowledge of the Mosaic Law on trial, so was his heart. 
• Jesus asked, “What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?” (26) 
 
Transition – The lawyer correctly answered the question, dividing his answer into two parts. 
 
A. Love God wholeheartedly 
1. The law expert began his answer with a quote from the Law. 
 
Deuteronomy 6:5, You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 
 
2. How do we inherit eternal life if we seek to do so by keeping the Mosaic Law? 
3. First, by perfectly loving God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength all our lives. 
4. God has perfectly loved us. 
 
Isaiah 54:10, “For the mountains may be removed and the hills may shake, but My lovingkindness will not be removed from you, and My covenant of peace will not be shaken,” says the LORD who has compassion on you. 
 
Jeremiah 31:3, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.

A life lesson is revealed out of Judges 6 and 7. When Joshua led the people of Israel into the Promised Land, they were full of strength and vigor. They followed the Lord fully; they had seen His hand moving in great power. But after Joshua and the other leaders died, the next generation that arose after them didn’t know the Lord. They hadn’t seen His miracles, and they fell away from following Him. 
 
 Where there is no relationship, there is no foundation of faith. And without faith the soul longs to be filled by that which the world offers. Troubles will surely follow. 
 
 That’s the life lesson. When people are drawn to the ways of the world and turn their back on God, they are weakened spiritually. Sin reduces a person, and when enough people turn away from God, the nation itself is weakened. That’s what happened to Israel. 
 
 The result is trouble, more trouble than they could reckon with. In their weakened state it was easy for their enemies to arise and bring even greater troubles. 
 
 Here’s a question. If troubles arise in a person’s life when they turn their back and walk away from God, does it mean there will be no troubles for the one who walks steadfastly with God? No, not at all. In fact, Jesus said that in this world you will have many troubles. 
 
What’s the difference then? If troubles arise if you walk away from God and troubles arise if you walk steadfastly with God, why walk with God? 
 
 Here’s the answer: if there will be troubles in this life, I want God to walk with me in those troubles. I want God to be for me and not against me. I could then say as David said in Psalm 23, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for Thou art with me.” 
 
 When Israel turned away from following God and turned toward the gods of the world, the result was predictable. They lost their strength spiritually, and so they lost their strength nationally. They would then cry out to the Lord and the Lord would send a deliver, a judge, to save the people from their oppression. As I mentioned last week, at least they knew to whom to cry when they were in trouble. 
 
 This pattern repeated over and over for 250 years. The people would follow the Lord when the deliverer was leading them, but when that judge died, the people would go back to the gods of the world. 
 
 In Judges 6, the nation of Israel was oppressed by the Midianites. They came across the Jordan from the east like locusts for number. They came into the land to devastate it, leaving no produce of the earth as well as no sheep, oxen, or donkey. Israel was brought very low because of Midian, and the sons of Israel cried to the Lord. 
 
Israel needed a deliver, but the one whom God chose did not appear to be much of a deliver. When we first meet him, he is threshing wheat in a winepress because he was afraid of the Midianites. He was met by an angel of the Lord, an appearance of Christ in the Old Testament, who greeted him with, “The Lord is with you, O valiant warrior.” God was addressing him as he would become, because at that moment he was neither valiant nor a warrior. 
 
 At first, Gideon responded the way many respond when life takes a turn for the worst, he blamed God, “If the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about? The Lord has abandoned us.” 
 
 The Lord answered, “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” 
 
 “Me?” Gideon responded, “How shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is least in Manasseh, and I am youngest in my father’s house.” 
 
 The Lord’s answer is simple, “Because I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.” 
 
“First, however, take two bulls and tear down the altar to Baal that is in your father’s house and cut down the Asherah that is beside it.” In other words, let revival begin in your own house, your own heart, your own life, and then you will see the power of God move.

2. It is found in the Book of Esther, words which were spoken by Queen Esther’s uncle, Mordecai. 
3. When Mordecai said those words to his niece, the outlook for the Jews was bleak. 
4. Israel had been in Exile for many years because of their rebellion against God’s covenant. 
5. While some of their countrymen had returned to Israel after the Exile ended, many Jews had put down roots in foreign lands and decided to remain where they were, scattered abroad, away from their Promised Land. 
6. The Jews had many enemies but one in particular stood out at this time, his name was Haman the Agagite. 
7. Haman’s hatred for Mordecai and the Jews ran so deep that he devised a plot to have the Jews wiped off the face of the earth in one day and then convinced King Ahasuerus to issue a decree for it to be done. 
8. Uncle Mordecai begged Queen Esther to tell her husband, King Ahasuerus, that she was a Jew and to reverse his edict. 
9. But Esther was afraid to do so because she feared the king’s wrath if she approached him uninvited. 
10. When Mordecai heard Esther’s hesitation, he told her. . . 
 
Esther 4:13-14, Do not imagine that you in the king’s palace can escape any more than all the Jews. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place. . . And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this? 
 
11. Now, you might be wondering, what does the story of Esther have to do with Luke 10. 
12. Well, as in the days of Esther and also the days of Jesus, we are living in perilous times. 
13. And perilous times require a response, a response from men and women of courage. 
a. A response from men and women of principle. 
b. A response from men and women of faith. 
14. As born-again Christians, we have a calling and we have been called For Such a Time as This. 
15. Tonight, as we study Luke 10:1-24, we will discover what our calling is and how to fulfill our calling to the satisfaction of the One who has called us, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 
 
Luke 10:1-24 
 
Context 
1. When we arrive at Luke 10, there was another major shift in Jesus’ ministry. 
2. After Jesus had sent the twelve apostles to proclaim the Gospel (9:1-6), and had fed the 5,000 with five loaves and two fish (9:12-17), and had heard Peter’s confession that He is “The Christ of God” (9:18-22), and had been transfigured on the mountain (9:28-36), we are told in Luke 9:51. . . 
 
Luke 9:51, When the days were approaching for His 
ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem. . . 
3. To prepare the cities along the route for His arrival, Jesus selected seventy men to spread the news, “the kingdom of God has come near.” (9) 
4. Now, I must state upfront, that there are some things about this passage which do not apply to us because Jesus’ directives and provisions were only for that group of seventy disciples. 
5. That said, there are many important principles which we may glean from this passage and apply to our lives because they transcend the specific commission of the seventy. 
6. We will begin with general observations and principles and then transition to specific observations and principles so that we may rise up and be used of God for such a time as this. 
 
Transition – The first principle from Luke 10 is. . . 
 
I. Let Christ Radically Transform Your Life 
 
• To understand what I mean when I say, “Let Christ radically transform your life” it is essential for us to understand the context. 
• When Jesus sent the seventy as His advance team to prepare the cities for His arrival, He had been ministering to these people for almost three years. 
• This means that the men Jesus was sending out with His authority were men He had been transforming during those three years. 
 
Transition – How were they transformed by Jesus? 
• First, by becoming Christ’s disciples. 
• Which means. . . . 
Discipleship comes first

What does God do with a wayward son? Does He turn His back? Does He walk away? Does He quit the relationship? The answer reveals the heart of God, and it’s important to know because a lot of people have become wayward at one time or another in their lives. 
 
 That was the situation with Israel. The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua and the elders who survived with Joshua, but then it says, “There arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor yet the work which he had done for Israel.” 
 
 That was the problem, the next generation hadn’t experienced the miracles of God as the generations before them. They didn’t know the Lord. That’s the key phrase. They didn’t know the Lord; they hadn’t experienced personal revival. 
 
Israel was unfaithful, and just as God had forewarned, life became extremely difficult. That itself is a life lesson. Life would get so bad for the sons of Israel that they would cry out to the Lord. At least they knew whom to cry out to. 
 
Every time they cried out to the Lord, He would answer by sending a deliverer, a judge, to rescue them from their oppression. He would not turn His back on them, He would send a deliverer. They would then follow the Lord while that deliverer was alive, but after that deliverer passed away, they would fall back to the ways of the world, to the ways of the gods of the nations that remained among them. 
 
It was a cycle that repeated itself almost 250 years in the history of Israel. God sent a deliverer each and every time. He never quit; God never gave up. That’s also a life lesson. 
 
God will not quit on you either. He wants you to know His heart in advance. “All day long I hold out my hand to an obstinate and rebellious people, who walk in ways not good,” God said through the prophet Isaiah. 
 
In Judges 6, we will meet Gideon. He is the fifth judge, or deliverer of Israel. He’s not who one might expect God to raise up. When we first meet Gideon, he’s hiding from the Midianites, threshing wheat in a winepress out of fear. 
 
In other words, it’s a story of God taking the weak and making them strong. It’s a story many can relate to because they are aware of their weakness. But God delights to use the weak for His glory. Many want to walk in God’s purpose in their lives but are very much aware of their inadequacy. This is a story of how the weak become strong. 
 
I. Faith is the Answer 
 
 Verse 7 - the sons of Israel cried to the Lord on account of the oppression of Midian. 
 
 God sent a prophet to the sons of Israel to open the eyes of their heart. The point of God's message was simple, “I am the same God who brought you up from Egypt; my power has not diminished. Why did you not listen to my voice?” 
 
 God shows them the root of the problem. The oppression of the Midianites was only a symptom. The real problem was their lack of faith; and lack of faith comes from lack of relationship. 
 
 There are life lessons for us out of the story. 
 
A. Blaming God is never helpful 
 
 An angel of the Lord, who could well be an appearance of Christ in the Old Testament, came and sat under an oak tree. 
 
 Gideon was there, threshing wheat in a winepress to save it from the Midianite raiders. In other words, Gideon was hiding in fear. 
 
 The angel of the Lord then addressed him with a most unusual greeting, “The Lord is with you, O valiant warrior.” 
 
 In Gideon's mind he was anything but a valiant warrior, and he certainly could not understand how God could be with him. 
 
 First, he said what many others have said in times of trouble, “If the Lord is with us, then why has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about?” 
 
 Was Gideon angry with God? Clearly, he’s blaming God for not being with them. Verse 13 – – “The Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” 
 
 Blaming God never helps, but many do. “You say you love me, then why did you allow all these troubles to happen in my life?”

One of my favorite testimonies regarding Jesus Christ comes from John the Baptist. 
2. God anointed John to prepare the way for the coming of Messiah in fulfillment of the prophecies found in Malachi 3:1; 4:5-6. 
3. People traveled great distances to hear John teach and to be baptized by him. His ministry experienced explosive growth. 
4. But there came a time of transition. 
5. After John had baptized Jesus and testified that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah, the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” a shift occurred. 
6. The people began to flock to Jesus while the crowds began to dwindle for John. 
7. Some might have had their feelings hurt or their noses bent out of joint, but not John. 
8. When some of his disciples questioned if it was better to be baptized by Jesus or John, John the Baptist, put the question to rest. 
9. In fact, I believe, John uttered words which should be inscribed on the hearts of us all because his words capture the essence of who Jesus is and the priority His person and words should have in our lives. 
 
John 3:27-30, A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven. You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, “I am not the Christ,” but, “I have been sent ahead of Him.” He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this 
joy of mine has been made full. He must increase, but I must decrease. 
 
10. Likewise, Jesus Christ must increase, but we must decrease. How? 
11. This evening as we study Mark 4:21-29, we will uncover the answer to this mystery by looking to some parables taught by Jesus. 
12. From Jesus we will learn why Christ Must Increase along with the blessing that comes to those who invite Him to increase in their lives. 
 
Mark 4:21-29, 
 
Context 
1. When we arrive at Mark 4, Jesus’ ministry has exploded onto the scene in Israel and the ripple effects have been felt ever since. 
a. At this time in His ministry, many were in awe of Jesus and followed Him joyfully, hanging on His every word, watching His every move. 
b. At the same time, there was growing animosity towards Jesus. The Jewish leaders felt threatened by His powerful teaching and His command over demons and disease. 
c. Jesus was a polarizing figure. It was true then as it is today. 
2. In fact, when we come to Mark 4, another major shift has occurred but this time it had to do with Jesus’ teaching approach; He began to teach parables to the crowds who followed Him. 
a. First, we will define what a parable is. 
b. Second, we will determine why Jesus taught parables. 
3. First, what is a parable? The word parable comes from two Greek words, para and ballō which together means “to throw alongside.” 
4. A parable, like a story or an illustration, makes a comparison between a known truth and an unknown truth; it “throws them alongside” each other. 
5. A parable teaches one main truth, though there might be many parts or different characters used to develop the main truth further. 
6. Jesus used familiar things like sowing seed to reveal spiritual truths that had never been revealed to Israel in the Old Testament, truths about the kingdom of God. 
7. Because parables use something familiar in story-form to make a point, the parable draws the listener into the story in order to bring them to a point of decision. 
8. Second, why did Jesus shift His teaching approach and use parables? 
9. Context is helpful to answer this question. 
a. In Mark 3:20-30 (c.f. Matthew 12), the scribes and Pharisees accused Jesus of using Satanic powers to heal people and deliver demoniacs from evil spirits. 
b. Their accusation was an official rejection of Jesus by the religious establishment. 
c. In essence, they declared that Jesus was not Israel’s Messiah because He was from hell. 
10. Now, their final rejection occurred when the Jewish leaders asked Pontius Pilate to release Barabbas so that Jesus could be crucified (Matthew 27:20-22).

In these verses, Joshua gives the most famous of all that he ever spoke. “Choose you this day whom you will serve, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” 
 
 We have a lot of respect for Joshua. He has been a wonderful leader for Israel. How difficult it would be to follow in the footsteps of Moses. Joshua has done well. He’s been a father figure. He’s been an example to follow. 
 
 He could have said the same as Paul, “The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award me on that day.” 
 
 And it’s true, the time of Joshua’s departure has come. He gathers Israel and its leaders to hear one final message. He has one last word and its epic. 
 
 Any good father and any good leader would want to leave something for the next generation. But what to leave them? You want to give something to help them be successful, to have a good life; you want them to have the way of greatest blessing. 
 
 He will bring his speech to a point where they must choose. They must decide for themselves to walk in the way of greatest blessing, to follow God by their own choosing. There’s an old saying, and it’s quite true, “God has no grandchildren.” It means that no one can ride on the faith of their parents, no one can ride on the faith of their spouse. Each one must choose for themselves. 
 
 Joshua begins his speech by reminding them of the great things God has done. “And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word of all the good words which the Lord your God spoke concerning you has failed; all have been fulfilled for you, not one of them is failed.” 
 
It was the Lord who drove out great and strong nations from before them. It was because of the favor of the Lord that one could put a thousand to flight. They were now in that land God promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They have come so far; from Egypt, through the Red Sea, through the desert for 40 years, crossing the Jordan, and here they are, all because of the favor of God on their lives. 
 
Don’t take it for granted, Joshua is saying, don’t ever go back and cling to those things that stand against God. For if you do, then know with certainty that the Lord will not continue to pour out His favor, and you will have trouble, those things will be a snare and a trap to you, and the whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish off this good land which the Lord your God is giving you. 
 
 These words ring true today. There comes a time of choosing. Look back and see how much God has blessed your life. See the amazing hand of God, the favor of God and decide again whom you will choose. Draw a line in the sand. There comes a time when your faith must stand up and be counted. 
 
I. Now, Therefore, Fear the Lord 
 
 From ancient times God took them out of worldly places where people served other gods. God recounts how He took their father Abraham from beyond the River and blessed him and multiplied him. He brought them out of Egypt, through the Red Sea. They lived in the wilderness a long time, then God brought them to possess the land He promised. 
 
 Even when the king of Moab arose and fought against Israel, summoning Balaam to bring a curse against Israel, God would not hear such a thing and Balaam had to bless Israel. 
 
 Over and over God’s favor was on his people. “Now, therefore…” 
 
 In other words, “because of all that God has done in your lives and in this nation, you should therefore...” 
 
 Fear the Lord. It’s the beginning of wisdom. It means to revere God, to respect Him. Many take God for granted. There needs to be more revering of God today. 
 
 It’s like a good father. Anyone who’s had a good father knows without question of the father’s love. They also have great respect for their father. 
 
A. Serve Him in sincerity and truth

In these verses, Joshua gives the most famous of all that he ever spoke. “Choose you this day whom you will serve, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

 We have a lot of respect for Joshua. He has been a wonderful leader for Israel. How difficult it would be to follow in the footsteps of Moses. Joshua has done well. He’s been a father figure. He’s been an example to follow.

If you were old and advanced in years and had one final speech to give, what would you say? You would want the next generation to walk in the way of the greatest blessing. Your speech would be filled with wisdom and admonition. You would want the next generation to avoid the mistakes that shipwreck the lives of many. You would want them to walk in the way in which the favor of God is found. 
 
 That’s the point of Joshua 23 and 24. Joshua is old and advanced in years. He’s almost 110 years old. Before he died, he called for all Israel along with the elders, leaders, judges, and officers to give his final message to the nation. 
 
 Joshua knows the way; he’s walked it. He was born in Egypt. He saw the oppression and hardship of their slavery. He and many others cried to God for help, to send a deliverer. He was there when Moses confronted Pharaoh. He saw the plagues against Egypt with his own eyes. He saw the mighty hand of God deliver Israel from that oppression. 
 
 Joshua walked through the sea on dry ground. He saw the Egyptian army destroyed. He ate manna in the desert for 40 years. He saw the pillar of fire by which God led Israel. He heard the voice of God at Mount Sinai speaking the commandments by which he would bless Israel. 
 
 Joshua also saw the hard hearts, the grumblers, those who complained against God, the lack of faith, the fear. In other words, Joshua knew the way of greatest blessing and he knew the way people shipwreck their lives. 
 
 When Joshua called Israel and their leaders, he didn’t call the unfaithful generation that died in the wilderness; he was calling the generation of those who were victorious because they trusted that God would do what He said. 
 
 Joshua wants to be sure that they never fail to stand on the promises of God; that they would never fall back, that they would always remain a faithful people so that they would always have the blessings they had already obtained. 
 
There was more to do. They had inherited the land which God gave them, but there were still pockets of enemy resistance and Joshua calls them to completely possess the land of promise. Joshua wants them to keep walking in the way of greatest blessing. 
 
 These things were written for our instruction; these were written for our example, that we should learn from them. 
 
Are there pockets of resistance that remain in your life? That is the point of Joshua's message to the leaders of Israel; faith is a condition of being. In other words, if you have found a way of greatest blessing, keep walking and it. Keep standing on the promises God gave you. 
 
I. Stay the Course 
 
 Verse 6 -- Joshua had been at the helm, leading Israel in victory and keeping them steadfast with God. 
 
 As he nears death, he knows the importance of staying the course; to keep and do everything written in God’s Word. “Don’t turned to the right or to the left.” 
 
 That's the key for you and me as well. 
 
A. Be strong in your faith 
 
 Verse 6 – “Be very firm.” Other versions say, “Be strong.” The idea is the same, decide in advance that this is the key to obtaining the promises God intends. 
 
 In other words, settle this question now. 
 
 In the Hebrew, it gives the sense of taking hold of something and not letting go, of having a firm grip. Be resolved in your heart. 
 
Illus - We sing a worship song, “It is So.” The lyrics capture this truth. “In the storm, You are peace, and Your love won’t let me go. You have spoken, and I know that it is so. 
 In every season, Your purpose is unchanging. In every moment, You’re working for my good. Jesus the Rock that never fails, Your kingdom will not be shaken. Your kingdom will not be shaken. You have spoken, and I know that it is so. 
 Your word is settled in heaven. It will be done, Father, let it be done. Your word is settled in heaven, let it be done. In the storm, You are peace, and Your love won’t let me go. You have spoken, and I know that it is so.”
