My prayer tonight is that thru the words of Habakkuk that we would gain a new perspective on our seasons of struggle. That we would have a shift in our hearts towards our circumstances and that we would allow God to refine us in our circumstances. That we would see that God is more than enough! 
 
A. Habakkuk Background Authorship and Context 
- Written during the final decades of Israel’s southern kingdom 
- Habakkuk stands out among the other prophetic works because he does not address or accuse Israel within his work. 
- Instead Habakkuk is speaking directly to God about his inner struggle and turmoil about the evil he sees in the world. 
- His writing is truly a lament of injustice and evil in the world. 
 
CONNECTION TO TODAY— Many of us have felt that way and probably have prayed that way in these recent days. Our hearts our broken over what has been happening in our nation today and as believers we want to know where God is in all of this. We want answers. 
And that is why I think the book of Habakkuk is remarkable because God answers Habakkuk’s concerns. And in the way God answers and Habakkuk responds I believe we can be challenge for what we are facing today in our world. 
 
B. Overview of Habakkuk 
- Habakkuk cried out to God in the beginning of this book about the brokenness of his people. They were neglected the law, their leadership was corrupt, and there was so much injustice and violence. 
- Habakkuk is frustrated at God and why he won’t act. 
• Habakkuk 1:2-3— How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save? Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds. 
 
- CONNECTION TO TODAY— Is God surprised by suffering that is going on in our world today? In midst of everything that goes on in our lives it is so easy to have this mindset. God why won’t you act. Why won’t you move on my behalf? God answers Habakkuk: 
• Habakkuk 1:5—“Look at the nations and watch—and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told. 
 
- I love God’s response because it points straight to the brokenness of Habakkuk’s heart and his blind perspective. 
- Habakkuk thought he was giving counsel to God when in reality God was already on the move. God was not far off but close. 
- CONNECTION— That is so often us when we are in a spot of trial. We want to explain to God what we think he doesn’t know and we want to tell him what we think he should do for us. 
 
C. God does not answer to our will! 
- In the context of Habakkuk God is going to go on to explain his will and “surprise surprise” Habakkuk isn’t going to like it! 
- But that just what God is saying in verse 5 he knows that Habakkuk wouldn’t believe God’s plans even if he told him because circumstances had blinded Habakkuk. 
- CHALLENGE TO OUR FAITH— I think many of us want the will of God to fit inside what works for us. Maybe we have even create a theology that makes God simply the bringer of blessings and the one who makes our dreams come true. 
- “If we keep our eyes on our circumstances and try figure it out on our own and it will leave us in despair, frustration, anxiety, fear, and doubt.” 
- “If we keep our hearts set on MY WILL and MY WAY we will always think God isn’t answering our prayers” 
- “If we love the blessing more than the Blesser we will walk in anger and resentment to a God who has never and will never work under the constraints of MY WILL because HIS WAYS ARE HIGHER! 
• Isaiah 55:8-9—“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

There is something about a new year I love. One the themes of the Bible is that God makes all things new and beginning a new year reminds me of that great truth. “Old things pass away and God is making all things new.” I love the thought of new opportunities and dreaming about what God may want to do with the year before us. 
 
 But this year is different. We’re amid a pandemic that has been going on for more than a year. It’s caused many to grow weary and get beaten down. It’s been a year of spiritual battle as the enemy has made inroads into people’s lives. 
 
 But God isn’t through yet. God is calling people to arise and look at the challenges and obstacles with strength of faith. 
 
 There are principles for overcoming. God gives examples of heroes of faith who have led the way and shown us what it means to be men and women who trust in God and to say with great boldness of faith, “Give me this mountain!” 
 
 That quote comes from one of my favorite people in the Bible. Caleb. His story is an inspiration because when he makes that bold statement, “Give me this mountain,” he was 85 years old and was as strong then as he was at 40! 
 
In Joshua 14, Israel has entered the Promised Land and at this point they have conquered a great portion of the southern and northern territories. They are dividing the land by lots according to the tribes of Israel, as God had instructed. 
 
 The sons of Judah, led by Caleb, came to Joshua, the leader of Israel, and Caleb said, “You remember the word which the Lord spoke to Moses concerning you and me at Kadesh Barnea. He swore to us that the land on which our foot has trodden shall be our inheritance. Now then, give me the land which was promised. Give me this mountain.” 
 
 Caleb just asked for the most difficult land in Israel. It was the most difficult not only because it was hill country, with difficult terrain; its greatest challenge was that the Anakim were there. The sons of Anak were a people large in stature. It was the Anakim who had put fear into the hearts of Israel at Kadesh Barnea 45 years earlier. It was because of the fear of the Anakim that Israel spent 40 years in the desert! 
 
Caleb waited 45 years for an opportunity to face the sons of Anak and take the hill country that God had promised. 
 
 Caleb faces adversity with unwavering faith. He is wholeheartedly committed to the Lord. He trusts in the promises of God’s Word. 
 
 Caleb came to Joshua and recounted the story of what had happened 45 years earlier. It was a turning point in the history of Israel and Caleb played a key role in what took place. 
 
 God delivered Israel from Egypt. After miraculously passing through the Red Sea, they made a fairly straight run toward the Promised Land. They were right at the door; they could have tasted it. Well, actually they did taste it. 
 
 They sent twelve spies to assess the land and its people. Ten spies came back with a report that struck fear in the hearts of the sons of Israel. Only Caleb and Joshua stood for God’s promises, but they could not cause the people to believe. Because of their lack of faith, Israel spent the next 40 years in the desert until that entire generation died in the desert. Only Caleb and Joshua entered the land God had promised. 
 
 Ever since that moment, Caleb waited for the opportunity to say to Joshua, “Give me that mountain! Give me the land God promised. The Anakim are there in those mountains, but God will be with me.” 
 
I. Have a Different Spirit 
 
 It’s common for people to want to fit in, to be accepted, to be like everyone else, to be approved by men. 
 Be different, stand out from the crowd, but in a good and godly way. That’s one of the great attributes of Caleb.

1. Have you ever found a bargain deal so amazing that you immediately went for it? 
2. Spiritually speaking, have you ever stopped to consider the amazing gift the Lord has offered to us? 
a. The forgiveness of all our sin. 
b. Heaven not Hell. 
3. Have you ever stopped to consider God’s command to leave your past behind to live a pure and righteous life? 
4. Or have you ever noticed how people tend to hesitate when it comes to leaving their sin behind? 
5. They know the truth; that sin ultimately brings death, but they fail to experience the victory over sin that Christ offers. 
6. Today, we are going to look at a passage that is a sobering wake-up call. 
7. God recorded this passage in His Word so that we might learn from the mistakes of others; to learn what it means to Never Look Back as we wholeheartedly pursue those things which promise and truly give us life to the full. 
 
Genesis 19:15-29 
 
Context 
1. In Genesis 18, the Lord, a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus, along with two angels appeared to Abraham before they traveled to Sodom and Gomorrah. 
2. After enjoying the meal that Abraham had prepared, the three visitors rose to leave. 
3. But before they left, the Lord confided in Abraham about Sodom’s pending judgment, just as a person would confide in a friend. 
4. By doing so, the Lord gave Abraham an opportunity to intercede for the wicked city. 
5. Abraham appealed to God’s justice and asked the Lord to spare the city if He found ten righteous people within the city limits. 
6. In response, Lord promised to spare the city if He found just ten righteous citizens residing there. 
7. Sadly, the two angels did not find ten because Sodom was a wicked city, worthy of divine judgment. (Genesis 19:1-14) 
8. At that point, Lot and his family also stood condemned. Lot should have been lumped in with the whole lot of them. 
9. But God had mercy on Lot because of Abraham. (16, 29) 
 
Transition – How did Lot and his family respond to the outpouring of God’s mercy? 
• Frankly, the answer will shock you. 
• First, let’s look at Lot and his response. 
 
I. Never Hesitate to Flee from Sin (15-22) 
 
ILLUS – There are some things in life worth lingering over. 
 
A. There is a revelation in a hesitation (15-19) 
 
 Asking a girl out for a cup of coffee. 
 
1. It was the morning of destruction and deliverance. 
2. But something was wrong. The two angels had to urge Lot to leave. (15) 
a. How could Lot and his family sleep the night before judgment day? 
b. Why weren’t they getting ready to flee? 
3. Not only were they slow in getting ready, Lot hesitated when it was time to leave. (16) 
a. Was he struggling over what to wear? 
b. Or was he already missing what he was about to leave behind? 
o His possessions and creature comforts 
o His popularity and respect 
4. The angels had to seize them by their hands. (16) 
a. “Brought him out” 
b. “Put him outside the city” 
c. “for the compassion of the Lord was upon him” 
5. But it got worse. Lot actually argued about his final destination. (17-20) 
 
Transition – Why did Lot and his family drag their heels? The answer is obvious. . . 
 
B. You are what you eat 
 
Unfortunately, some people go back for seconds when they should not have taken a bite in the first place. 
 
1. Lot had been eating from the wrong table for far too long. 
2. The Bible makes it clear that Lot had been living by sight and satisfying his flesh for quite a while. 
Genesis 13:10-11, And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere – this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah – like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar. So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan; and Lot journeyed eastward. 
 
3. When faith is put on the “proverbial” shelf, a void is created which is quickly filled by worldly things. 
4. Look at the progression in Lot’s life after he moved away from his uncle Abraham: 
a. Genesis 13:12, Lot “moved his tents as far as Sodom.” 
b. Genesis 14:12, Lot “was living in Sodom.” 
c. Genesis 19:1, Lot was “sitting in the gate of Sodom.” 
d. Genesis 19:2, Lot owned a home in Sodom.

I just love this passage and all that it says to us about God keep-ing His amazing promises and His ability to even suspend the laws of the universe to accomplish those promises. 
 
The first story I chose is that of the angel Gabriel appearing to the virgin Mary to tell of the pending conception by the Holy Spirit and miracle in her womb. Then we will look at God’s ap-pearance to Abraham and Sarah. 
 
Testimony - I know a little bit about this miracle in the womb… 
 
I. History Defined By A Promise 
 
Even though Jesus was born in Bethlehem, events surrounding it were north in the little town of Nazareth - where the angel Gabriel appeared and told Mary she was going to have a son. 
 
• Today in Israel - the church of St Gabriel in Nazareth sits over the only natural well in Nazareth - during time of Mary, women came there for water - according to tradition this is where Gabriel met Mary and made this announcement. 
• This church is filled with paintings and murals depicting the angels in heaven looking down on Gabriel as he tells Mary the purpose of his coming to see her. 
• Imagine the host of heaven watching in v28 - “greetings…do not be afraid Mary…Jesus is with you… 
• What astounds Mary - not the announcement - but that, as a virgin, she is having a child at all. 
• The bible is very clear in v27; “to a virgin…" 
 
Matthew 1:18; Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Jo-seph, before they came together she was found to be preg-nant by the Holy Spirit. 
 
A. God suspends natural laws of the universe 
 
• Someone may say they don’t “believe” Mary was a virgin; that’s their prerogative/their opinion - skeptics have differing opinions, but that doesn’t change what God says. 
• But if they say the Bible doesn’t “claim” Mary was a virgin - they are simply wrong… 
 
Every non-believing expert in biology, chemistry, physiology and physics will say having any child at all as described here in Luke is absolutely impossible. 
 
• I don’t have an explanation - but I can give you the words Gabriel gave to Mary - “the Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the most high will overshadow you and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God.” 
• God is going to suspend the natural laws of the universe to get it done. 
• Mary said, I am the Lord’s servant; may it be done to me as you say. She understands God’s power and basically is ready to do whatever God has for her. 
 
What difference does this make to you and I? Always ask your-self what the application of the text is on your life. 
 
B. Nothing is impossible with God 
 
Mary asked a reasonable question of God - how do Virgins have children? God’s answer v37; nothing will be impossible with God…including the virgin birth. 
• Not a random event. 
• Connection here in Luke was the fulfillment of a promise God made 750 years before in Isaiah. 
 
Isaiah 7:14; Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him Immanuel. 
 
All about God keeping his word; fulfilling his promise - but in order to do it - he had to suspend the natural laws of the uni-verse…do we all understand the magnitude of this? 
 
God did the very same thing for Abraham and Sarah… 
 
II. A Miracle for Abraham & Sarah 
 
He promised them a son… 
• Sarah was 90 and Abraham was 99. 
• The Bible tells us the idea of it was impossible for them… 
 
Genesis 18:11; Now Abraham and Sarah were old, ad-vanced in age; Sarah was past childbearing. 
 
• Old - wasn’t that a delicate way for the writers to put it? 
• Not any better for Abraham. 
 
Romans 4:19; Without becoming weak in faith he contem-plated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb; 
 
His body was dead also…both of them - 
 
The Lord comes to Abraham to visit in human form.

1. With a sermon title like “The Keys to a Blessed Life” it would be easy to assume that this message will be something similar to what you would hear at a “self-help” seminar. 
2. But let me assure you that this is not a “self-help” seminar. 
3. That said, it is important to recognize that there is a deep desire within all of us to be blessed, to lead a blessed life. 
4. Now, our world offers many suggestions for what brings true blessing. 
5. Unfortunately, there has been confusion even in the church about what it means to have a blessed life. 
6. Sadly, it can be difficult to discern the difference between some Sunday morning sermons and a Madison Avenue advertising pitch. 
7. So, during our time together we will look to God’s Word to discover The Keys to a Blessed Life. 
 
Psalm 1:1-6 
 
Transition – The first Psalm rightly sets the tone for the Psalms that follow. In fact, the first verse of the first Psalm reveals the first Key to a Blessed Life. . . 
 
 
 
 
I. Be in the World, Not of the World (1) 
 
• Throughout the Bible the Christian will discover distinctions, comparisons and contrasts. 
• For instance, the Bible distinguishes between light and darkness, life and death, righteousness and wickedness, and blessings and curses. 
• Verse one reveals an important contrast, we are to be in the world but not of the world. 
 
Transition – To be in the world but not of the world is the most blessed life, the happiest life of all. 
 
A. A blessed life is a happy life 
1. Literally, the beginning of the first verse reads, “Oh how very, very happy is the man. . .” 
2. The word “blessed” comes from a word which means “to go straight, to go forward, to set right, to advance in the way of understanding.” 
3. The word “blessed” is also plural and pictures a person who is blessed in many ways because their relationship with God blesses them on multiple levels; it is not one-dimensional. 
4. Finally, this “happy” person is aware and thankful that their heavenly Father is always near, has their best interests in mind, and will be faithful to meet their every need every moment of every day. 
 
Psalm 73:25-26, 28, Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. . . But as for me, the nearness of my God is my good; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all Your works. 
 
APPL – This first key to happiness begins with asking Jesus Christ to forgive our sin, to be the Savior of our souls. 
 
Psalm 32:1, How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 
 
APPL – You might be wondering, “Why Jesus only?” 
• “That sounds too exclusive.” 
• “I thought all paths lead to God, right?” 
• Those are fair questions. 
• So it is important for us to understand what the Bible has to say in response. 
• In one sense, all paths do lead to God because all will stand before God someday. 
 
Hebrews 9:27, And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment 
 
• The question is “What is your standing before God when you stand in front of God?” 
• What I am asking is, “Has your sin been forgiven because you have asked Jesus to be your Savior?” 
• If so, then you will stand before God forgiven and ready to enjoy heaven with God forever. 
• If not, then you will stand before God unforgiven because Jesus Christ is the only way for our sins to be forgiven. 
• This is why Jesus said. . . 
John 14:6, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. 
 
• God wants a relationship with us but our sin has created a barrier between us and God. 
• So, God has provided one way for that barrier to be removed, for that chasm to be bridged, and it is through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. 
Acts 4:12, And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.

2. But when it comes to the heart, there is a problem and the Lord revealed the nature of the problem in His Word. 
 
Jeremiah 17:9-10, The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds. 
 
3. We may not know what is in our own hearts, what drives us, but the Lord knows each of our hearts intimately well. 
4. In fact, not only does God know our hearts, He actually reveals what is in our hearts. 
5. How does God reveal what is in our hearts? Through His Son, Jesus Christ. 
 
Luke 2:34-35, And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed—and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” 
 
6. Jesus Christ reveals the condition of each heart because His presence requires that each heart answer a question, “Who do you say Jesus is?” 
7. Even as a Child, Jesus was the “Revealer of Hearts.” 
8. In Matthew 2:1-23, three groups of people are represented, each with their own response to Jesus. 
9. From them, we will learn the proper response to Jesus Christ, the King, 
10. It is my prayer, that this evening, now that we know The King is Here, we will ask Jesus Christ to be the King of Our Hearts. 
 
Matthew 2:1-23 
 
Context 
1. According to Luke 2:1-7, Caesar Augustus sent out a decree for a census to be taken of the Roman Empire. 
2. At that time, Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth but were required to travel approximately 80 miles south to a little town called Bethlehem, the city of David, because they were “of the house and family of David.” (4) 
3. While in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to Jesus and placed Him in His first crib which was a feeding trough for farm animals. (7) 
4. When we come to the events in Matthew 2, some time had passed, perhaps six to nine months. 
a. Jesus is no longer referred to as an infant but is called a Child. 
b. Joseph, Mary, and Jesus are living in a house. (11) 
5. Matthew is providing proof that Jesus is Messiah, the promised King from the line of King David. 
a. His genealogy and how He was conceived is proof. 
b. Where Jesus was born and later lived is further proof. 
c. Only Messiah the King could fulfill these prophecies. 
 
Transition – The first group that we will look at is the magi. What did Jesus’ presence reveal about their hearts? 
 
I. The Wise Heart Seeks the King 
 
• Who were the magi? 
• The word “magi” means “possessor of special or secret wisdom.” 
• Magi were astrologers but not like what we think of today. 
o They were educated men who were employed by a king to help him make decisions for his kingdom. 
o They would look at the placement of the stars to find connections with world events. 
• Likely, they came from Babylon or Persia, which means they would have likely been exposed to the Jewish Scriptures when Judah was exiled in Babylon in 586 B.C. 
• While looking at the stars, they witnessed a sight they had never seen before. 
• A star in the east. They called it “His star.” 
• They linked this star to Messiah, the King of the Jews. Why? 
• Perhaps it was one of the many Messianic prophecies they had studied, including the one from Balaam. 
 
Numbers 24:17, I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; a star shall come forth from Jacob, and a scepter shall rise from Israel 
 
• The magi’s response was the correct one. “We. . . have come to worship him.” (2) 
• It was not enough for the magi to simply discern that the King of the Jews had been born. 
o Once they knew the truth, they had to meet Him. 
o So, they travelled over 900 miles with a large caravan. 
 
Transition – But the magi wanted to do more than just have a “Meet and Greet” with Jesus. They wanted to pay homage to Jesus, the King.

This is a weary world. 2020 has become a year that many are thankful just to get through. But God has sustained and is walking with us through it. It’s been a hard year, the Covid-19 pandemic with its quarantines and lockdowns have left many people weary and tired. But then fires blanketed the entire West Coast in smoke, there was civil unrest that’s left the city of Portland in ruins, and on and on. 
 
The world was also weary, however, when God sent His Son into the world. In a dry and weary land where there is no water, your help comes from God. 
 
That is why the theme of Christmas is rejoicing. Because light has come in the darkness, because the hopeless have found hope, because the weary are strengthened, it’s time for rejoicing. 
 
If you think about it, all the traditions of Christmas have something to do with rejoicing. Lights and candles, beautifully wrapped gifts, songs of celebration, bells on bobtails that ring, making spirits bright, eggnog, hot chocolate, candy canes and Christmas carols. They’re all traditions of Christmas that bring joy in the darkest part of the year. 
 
Cultures around the world have Christmas traditions that speak of rejoicing. Some are rather interesting. 
 
In Japan, the traditional Christmas dinner is Kentucky Fried Chicken. That would make anyone rejoice! This is so popular that families must make reservations early to be certain to get their KFC on Christmas Day. 
 
In Finland, it’s tradition to visit a cemetery over Christmas. Graveside candles are lit; entire cemeteries are lighted. Three-fourths of all Finnish families visit a cemetery at Christmas, mostly on Christmas Eve. Special traffic arrangements are needed to handle the crowds. 
 
If you think about it, there’s a beautiful message behind that tradition in Finland. God sent His Son to conquer death and give eternal life to all who trust in Him. So, yes, put lights in cemeteries! 
 
In Hawaii, the tradition is to eat Spam on Christmas. Which, I’m sure brings joy to them, but I have a spam filter, so, no Spam for me. 
 
In Venezuela, people go to Christmas Eve service on roller skates. So many people skate to church on Christmas Eve they close the streets. Which gives new meaning to the expression ‘holy rollers.’ 
 
And of course, who could forget our own American tradition of Christmas fruitcake? It’s kind of an ironic to call it fruitcake, however, because it is neither fruity nor cakey. I’m convinced the whole regifting thing originated with fruitcake. 
 
We must be very careful, however, that traditions don’t replace the meaning and message of why God sent His Son. The world is weary and needs hope. The world is becoming more dangerous. Many with spiritual discernment have sensed the storm clouds on the horizon; there is a deep evil that is rising. 
 
This is a broken, evil world and while there is greater darkness, it will also be a time of revival. Darkness will get darker, but a light will also dawn. 
 
When Isaiah wrote the prophecy of Isaiah 9 it was a dark time for the nation of Israel. A terrible, wicked king ruled in Judah who turned Israel away from God to go after the gods of the world, gods of worldliness and licentiousness. The result was predictable; they became weaker as a nation as darkness and turmoil came over them. 
 
At the darkest hour, God gave the greatest promise. There is no question that these verses give us the greatest promise known to man; that God would send an answer to darkness. 
 
God’s answer is His Son. “Unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given.” And the promises, hope, and help are given to us in the name spoken of in this prophecy. 
 
God doesn’t stand by idly and watch as people destroy their lives, He does something about it; God is on the move, He is pursuing relationship. God sent His Son, He is knocking on the door of hearts, He wants people to have life. 
 
Isaiah speaks of the name that is given for the One who is coming as the hope of the world. You gain great insight in the purpose and meaning of Christmas when you understand the significance of His name.

1. Does God really care about what happens to us? 
 
ILLUS – We live in a world filled with great evil and tragic suffering. 
 
2. Tonight, we will discover the answer to this all-important and relevant question as we study Jesus Christ’s interactions with two people who were suffering due to sickness and death. 
3. My prayer is that this study will deeply comfort your hearts and strengthen your faith as we look at Jesus Christ’s compassion for the hurting and His authority over sickness and death. 
4. You see, the truth is, Jesus Cares About You. 
 
Luke 7:1-17 
 
Context 
1. When we arrive at Luke 7, Jesus Christ’s ministry has exploded onto the scene in Israel and the ripple effects were felt in the surrounding regions. 
a. At this time in His ministry, many were in awe of Jesus and followed Him joyfully, hanging on His every word, watching His every action. 
b. At the same time, others were growing in their animosity towards Jesus, feeling threatened by His authoritative teaching and His command over demons and disease. 
c. Jesus was and still is a polarizing figure. 
2. For example, in Luke 5:12-13, we are told that when Jesus was asked by a leper if He was willing to cleanse him, Jesus responded with compassion and touched the leper before He said, “I am willing, be cleansed.” 
3. And when a paralytic was let down through the roof of a home where Jesus was teaching, He told the man with crippled legs, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” (5:17-26) 
a. Immediately the scribes and Pharisees scoffed at His pronouncement and accused Jesus of blasphemy because only God can forgive sins. 
b. Jesus responded, “Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,”—He said to the paralytic—“I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.” 
c. Immediately the paralytic was healed and went home glorifying God. 
4. In Luke 5:27-39, Jesus called a tax collector named Levi (a.k.a. Matthew) to be His disciple and then dined with him and his sinner friends. 
a. Again, the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?” 
b. Jesus reiterated His mission, the purpose for why He came when He said, “It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” 
5. Next, the scribes and Pharisees were filled with rage when Jesus declared that He is the “Lord of the Sabbath” through His teaching and also by healing a man with withered right hand. (6:1-11) 
6. Then, after He spent the whole night in prayer with Father God, Jesus chose twelve of His disciples to be His apostles. (6:12-16) 
7. Luke 6:17-19 describes how a “great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon” came to “hear Him and to be healed of their diseases” and that “those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured. And all the people were trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all.” 
8. As the large crowd gathered around Jesus, He taught them the Beatitudes of the kingdom of God and exhorted them to build their lives wisely by building their lives on His Words; to not only call Him “Lord” but to come under His authority and live under His Lordship. (6:20-49) 
 
Transition – As we reflect on chapters five and six in Luke we discover a theme developing which carries us into chapter seven, a theme which, in many ways, is also a call to action. . . 
 
I. Bring All Your Burdens to Jesus 
 
APPL – Why should we bring all our burdens to Jesus? 
• Because Jesus cares for us. 
• The Apostle Peter was convinced of Jesus’ heart for us and that’s why he wrote. . . 
 
1 Peter 5:7, Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (NIV) 
• This is confirmed by Jesus’ first encounter with a person in need of His healing touch.

At this point in our study, Israel has crossed the Jordan and are about to face their first battle, the city of Jericho. They’re about to face impossible walls. We know from history the walls were more than 7 feet thick – – and there were two sets of walls, one behind the other: 15 to 20 feet high with towers greater than 28 feet high. 
 
 People today face impossible walls all the time. There are obstacles that appear to be insurmountable. Financial troubles, marriage issues, difficulties with children, burdens, and troubles at work, and on and on. But there are spiritual principles that apply in facing them. 
 
These things happened to Israel for our example, Paul wrote, that we should learn from their example, their lack of faith and their disobedience. 
 
 Israel being saved out of Egypt is a picture of our salvation from the world’s oppression and slavery. When Israel crossed the Red Sea, it was a picture of our own baptism into Jesus Christ. When Israel wandered in the desert, it was a picture of a believer who is immature, believing in God, but walking in the flesh. The land of Palestine is a picture of the promises of God that come from walking in obedience and the maturity of faith. 
 
 After Israel has crossed the Jordan, the first thing they did was to circumcise the men and celebrate the Passover. Both are symbolic of getting right with God. They have spiritual significance for the Christian who is growing in faith. 
 
 They are in the land God promised, but there are many challenges and obstacles before them. Indeed, there are many battles in the process of becoming a victorious and mature believer in Jesus Christ. 
 
I. Overcomers Have Authority 
 
 Life brings many obstacles. You will face impossible walls, circumstances in life where you need God to move in your behalf. 
 
 You will either be defeated or will move forward in the spiritual victory that God intends. 
 
 There are spiritual principles that apply. The book of Joshua is filled with the principles of overcoming, of trusting God to be your very present help in time of need. 
 
 
 
A. Be under God’s authority -- well 
 
 Just before Israel faced Jericho, Joshua saw a man with a sword drawn in his hand. “Are you for us or for our enemies?” Joshua asked. 
 
 “Neither” came the answer, “I come now as captain of the host of the Lord.” 
 
 In other words, the question is not whether God is for you or against you, the question is whether you are for Him. 
 
Illus – In 1872, church leaders in England began planning a revival. One of the pastors said, “We need DL Moody.” A debate followed. Finally, somebody asked, “Why do we need DL Moody? What is it, does DL Moody have a monopoly on God?” “No,” a young pastor responded, “but God has a monopoly on him.” 
 
2 Chronicles 16:9, “The eyes of the Lord search to and fro throughout the whole earth in order to show Himself strong in behalf of those whose hearts are perfectly His.” 
 
James 4:8, Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. 
 If God has a monopoly on you, you have a relationship with the captain of the host of the Lord. 
 The key is to come under His authority – – well. Many chafe at authority. They learn this when they are young and never grow out of it. 
 But those who have authority, have that authority because they are under authority. Their captain and commander is the captain of the host of the Lord. In other words, they are well content to be under the authority of the Lord. 
Acts 7:51, “You men are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.”

At this point in our study, Israel has crossed the Jordan and are about to face their first battle, the city of Jericho. They’re about to face impossible walls. We know from history the walls were more than 7 feet thick – – and there were two sets of walls, one behind the other: 15 to 20 feet high with towers greater than 28 feet high.

 People today face impossible walls all the time. There are obstacles that appear to be insurmountable. Financial troubles, marriage issues, difficulties with children, burdens, and troubles at work, and on and on. But there are spiritual principles that apply in facing them.

Who can we trust? 
 
Isaiah 9:6-7, For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this. 
 
2. Tonight, we are going to study verses from Mark 1 which will affirm that Jesus Christ is the Authority above all authorities and that He is worthy of our undying loyalty and trust. 
 
Mark 1:21-39 
 
Context 
1. Mark 1:21-39 parallels Luke 4:31-44. 
2. After the people from the synagogue in Nazareth attempted to throw Jesus off a cliff for declaring He is the Messiah, the One who will usher in an eternal Year of Jubilee, He left for Capernaum, about 20 miles away. (21) 
3. Capernaum was a town located on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee. 
a. Capernaum was a strategic location because it was a major trade and economic center in the North Galilean region. 
b. Capernaum became the hub for Jesus’ ministry in Galilee. 
4. As Jesus “was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen.” (16) 
5. Jesus invited Simon, Andrew, and the sons of Zebedee, James and John, to leave their fishing businesses to follow Him and “become fishers of men” which they did immediately. (17-20) 
6. Together, they went to the synagogue on the Sabbath. 
7. What happened that Sabbath day, both inside and outside of the synagogue, was nothing short of awe-inspiring and filled with important insights into the Person and Authority of Jesus Christ. 
 
Transition – The first insight we learn about Jesus Christ is: 
 
I. Jesus has Authority Over the Forces of Evil 
 
• Similar to the synagogue in Nazareth, the synagogue official invited Jesus Christ to teach. 
• Unlike Luke, Mark did not record Jesus’ teaching. 
• But like Luke, Mark notes that the words of our Savior left the synagogue members in awe. 
• Jesus Christ spoke in a manner that was and is unprecedented, unparalleled, and unrivaled. 
• Mark notes that the people were “amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” (22) 
o The Greek word for amazed literally means “to be astounded, struck out of their senses, overwhelmed.” 
o Mark contrasts Jesus’ teaching with the Jewish scribes who were schooled in the Mosaic Law along with the traditions and regulations of the Jews. 
o If one were to describe the teachings of the scribes, words like academic, pompous, and boring would likely come to mind. 
o The scribes liked to recite long quotes from other rabbis, using the authority of others as a basis for their own authority. 
• When contrasted to Jesus’ teaching, it has been rightly observed that, “The scribes spoke from authorities but that Jesus spoke with authority.” 
• Jesus Christ’s message was the Gospel of the kingdom of God. 
o Jesus was not talking about a political revolution, though some took it that way. 
o Jesus was talking about His kingdom reigning in the lives of His people, a spiritual transformation, not a political institution. 
o The only way to enter His kingdom is by placing your faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sin and the gift of eternal life; to be born again. (John 3:1-7) 
o There is only one Gospel and it focuses solely on the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) 
o The Apostle Paul calls it the “gospel of the grace of God” in Acts 20:24 because we are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not on the basis of any “good works.” 
Ephesians 2:8-9, For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and some-where along the way you say, isn’t it going to be wonderful when we get to heaven? And they say something like, “well, maybe or I sure hope so” 
 
• Some have trusted Jesus Christ for many years but walk through life for some reason lacking eternal security. 
• God wants us to be absolutely confident. 
 
Eternal Security - what do we mean and where do we get such confidence and truth? 
 
A phrase not actually in the Bible but it summarizes a truth found in the Bible. 
• A truth that says once a person has placed their trust in the blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross as payment for their sin, as their entry into heaven, then that person is immediately granted salvation and their place in eternal life with the Lord Himself. 
• Believers can never lose their salvation regardless of what a believer does or doesn’t do. 
• Bible teaches our eternal life is not based on our human performance day by day (works) - but rather what Jesus did for us on the cross - it never changes. 
 
In a recent sermon, Pastor Rich noted that people often live without regard for God’s promises. Why would we do that - why would we put ourselves in the position of missing out on God’s promises? 
 
The promise of eternal security is one you can live by. 
 
1 JOHN 5:11-14 
 
I. God Promises ‘Eternal Security’ 
 
Why would someone call themselves a Christian, a follower of Jesus - and not live a life celebrating this promise but instead questioning it? 
 
I want to show you many scriptures to support what we are talking about - that our eternal life really is eternal security. 
 
John 5:24; “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. 
 
A. Jesus speaks to us in present tense 
 
When Jesus says truly, truly I say to you…”has” is in present tense - immediately granted. “Has” eternal life - not after we die - not after a period of time - not if we don’t “backslide” - 
• Eternal life “has” = right now, we will not get any more eternal life when we get to heaven than right now! 
Rewards in heaven, yes - we can talk about that another time - but salvation in Jesus Christ - that was settled on the cross for all those who confess Him as Lord & repent of your sins. 
 
C.S. Lewis - unbelievers often have a hard time discussing death & heaven because “heaven” is an actual place. Heaven is the place for people who already “have” eternal life. A place we go when we leave this world as we know it. To discuss life in any other place is uncomfortable. 
 
John 3:36; The one who believes in the Son has eternal life; but the one who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” 
 
John 6:47; Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who believes has eternal life. 
 
B. God lays to rest any doubt about heaven 
 
Look at John 5:24 again - this time the NIV translation 
 
John 5:24; “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 
 (NIV) 
 
• Key words here are “crossed over” - not present tense 
• Greek - it’s perfect tense 
• Perfect tense in Greek is rarely used - so when it is used it’s important and significant - what does it mean? 
• A completed action - all done - there is a result that goes on irreversibly, indefinitely, and irrevocably… 
 
Illustration - like a dot on a pc of paper 
 
Psalm 103:12; As far as the east is from the west, 
So far has He removed our wrongdoings from us. 
 
Allow me to retranslate this verse, 
• the person who believes in Jesus has eternal life and will never be condemned, that person has crossed over, is crossed over, and always will be crossed over from a state of eternal death to a state of eternal life. 
 
Hebrews 10:16; “This is the covenant which I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put My laws upon their hearts, 
And write them on their mind".

Thanksgiving. As Christians, we have so much to be thankful for. 
2. And we, of all people, should embrace each day with a spirit of thanksgiving. 
3. In fact, God’s Word commands us to be thankful because being thankful is God’s will for God’s people. 
 
1 Thessalonians 5:18, in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 
 
4. But you might be thinking, “How can I be thankful during this dark time, in a world that is becoming more restrictive and threatening every day?” 
5. I believe we can be thankful and we must be thankful because we are living in the time of God’s favor. 
6. I will take it one step further and confidently say, “This is the Favorable Year of the Lord!” 
7. And tonight, we are going to discover reasons to be thankful by looking at the proclamation of Jesus Christ at the beginning of His ministry. 
8. From His proclamation, we will learn more about Who He is, What He has done, and How we may enjoy The Favorable Year of the Lord. 
9. If you feel burdened this evening, I believe God wants to put a new song in your heart. 
10. You see, nothing causes a heart to sing more than understanding the favor of the Lord. 
 
Luke 4:14-30 
 
Context 
1. Though we are only in chapter four, at this point in Luke’s Gospel there has been one confirmation after another that Jesus Christ is the long-awaited Messiah. 
a. There was an angelic announcement prior to Jesus Christ’s conception. (1:26-38) 
b. Followed by an angelic pronouncement at His birth. (2:13-14) 
c. There were prophetic declarations by devout relatives and other Jews. (1:41-45; 2:25-38) 
d. There was a divine confirmation at Jesus Christ’s baptism. (3:21-22) 
e. And a decisive victory over Satan when Jesus Christ was tempted in the wilderness after fasting for forty days. (4:1-12) 
2. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the region of Judea and returned to Galilee. (14) 
3. News about Jesus spread as “He began teaching in their synagogues;” He was “praised by all.” (15) 
4. Now, synagogues are places of worship where Jews gather every Sabbath to pray, read from God’s Word, and then receive instruction from a recognized teacher or leader. 
5. In order to form a synagogue, ten Jewish men were required to live in the town. 
6. On the Sabbath, once all were present, the sacred scroll was unrolled, and a portion of the Law was read first followed by a portion from the Prophets. 
7. Out of respect for God’s Word, the reader would stand while reading the Scriptures and then be seated during the time of instruction. 
8. Here, Luke records Jesus Christ’s first teaching at the synagogue in Nazareth, the town “where He had been brought up.” (16) 
a. Friends and family were present. 
b. Likely Mary and the other half-siblings were there too. 
9. As was Jesus’ “custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.” (16) 
10. The “book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him.” 
11. He opened the book to Isaiah 61 and read all of verse one and the first half of verse two. (17) 
 
Transition – From these verses, we learn that this is The Favorable Year of the Lord because. . . 
 
I. Jesus is Our Year of Jubilee 
 
• Let me explain what I mean when I say, “Jesus is Our Year of Jubilee” and how it is related to Isaiah 61:1-2. 
• In the Bible, the phrase, “THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD” is a reference to the Year of Jubilee. 
• Leviticus 25 introduces us to the Year of Jubilee for the first time. 
• God commanded that every seventh year was a year of rest, a “Sabbatical year” for Israel so that the land could rest. 
• Every fiftieth year, after seven Sabbaticals, was set apart as the “Year of Jubilee.” 
• According to Warren Wiersbe, “The main purpose of this special year was the balancing of the economic system.” 
o All slaves were set free and went home to their families. 
o Any property that had been sold during the previous 49-year period was returned to the original owners. 
o All debts were canceled. 
o And the land lay fallow as man and beast rested and rejoiced in the Lord.
