Perhaps for many, the most memorable part of the book of Revelation is the mark of the beast. No one can buy or sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. And of course, that number is 666. 
 
 But these verses are a study in contrasts. Satan’s original sin was that he desired to be like the Most High God. Therefore, you see many ways that Satan imitates God. 
 
 This mark is placed on their right hand or on their forehead, and though it is very real, it is an imitation of the seal that God places on the foreheads of the 144,000 Jewish witnesses during the Tribulation. Interestingly, that seal upon them is the name of the Lamb and His Father. 
 
 The satanic mark is that of the Beast, or the Antichrist and the power of the Antichrist is Satan himself. But there is also another beast that arises in those days who will have two horns like a lamb but speaks as a dragon. Thus, you have what could be called the ‘unholy trinity.’ 
 
For much of our study through Revelation John described scenes of heaven. He saw a sea of glass like crystal. In the center was the throne and the One who sat on the throne was the Almighty God. In His right hand he held a scroll upon which was written the edicts and declarations of the events of the last days. 
 
 John also saw the Lion from the tribe of Judah, who also is the Lamb who was slain, who was worthy to open the scroll and to break the seven seals with which it was sealed. Each seal revealed awesome apocalyptic events of the Tribulation seven-year period that is coming in the latter days. 
 
 The seventh seal was broken, and it revealed seven angels with seven trumpets, each revealing cataclysmic events that will destroy and devastate the earth as the wrath of God is poured out. 
 
 But here the scene is on the earth. In John’s vision he saw Jesus standing on Mount Zion and with him were the 144,000 Jewish witnesses for Christ that we read about in chapter 7. These 144,000 have the seal of God on their foreheads. They have been going through the Tribulation and are victorious through it. 
 
 Today, I want us to contrast the mark of the beast with the seal on the foreheads of these 144,000 faithful witnesses and what each of them represent. 
 
I. Victory Begins Where God’s Name is Written 
 
 The mark of the beast is the name of the beast or the number of his name, which is 666. Verse 18 says the number is that of a man and that him whoever has understanding should count the number of the beast. 
 Some have taken that to mean that to count the number of the beast they should use a method called gematria, which is a word from the Greek with the same root as geometry. 
 
 Gematria is the process of taking names or words and finding the numeric value of those words by adding up the value of each letter. We use such number/letter methods even today. 
 
 The next Super Bowl will be Super Bowl 55 written in Latin numerical values LV. That’s an example of gamatria. 
 
 The Hebrew and Greek languages also used letters to represent numbers. We could do the same in English if we made the letter A=1, B=2, etc. Using that method, my name equals 966. 
 
 The problem with that method, however, is that many names end up adding up to 666. Many people have made much of the fact that Caesar Nero’s name added up to 666; however, he died almost 30 years before John wrote this book. 
 
 In the Middle Ages reformers often taught that the Catholic Church and various popes had names that added up to the value of 666. The Catholic Church shot back, however, showing the numerical values of Martin Luther and John Calvin was 666. 
 
 In more recent history, others have suggested the names of various world leaders such as Napoleon, Hitler, and Stalin. Even more recently, others have pointed out that Netanyahu, Recep Erdogan, Pres. of Turkey, all have names that add up to 666.

In so many ways, life can feel like an infomercial purchase. 
2. You take the plunge thinking it will be different this time, this time it is going to work. It is worth the money, only to get burned. 
3. You feel played. You vow to never fall for that again until you see the next infomercial. 
4. It is easy to get jaded by life. 
5. Who should we trust? What does real trust look like? 
6. Tonight, we are going to look at two verses from Proverbs 3 which will answer these fundamental questions. 
 
Proverbs 3:5-6 
 
Context 
1. Proverbs 3:1-12 is a wonderful passage filled with wisdom, principles, and promises for living a godly life. 
2. Proverbs 3:5-6 is the foundation for the entire passage. Everything hinges upon the nuggets of wisdom found there. 
 
Transition – In these two verses we discover “Who” to trust, “How” to trust, and the “Promise” given to those who apply these words of wisdom. First question, “Who to trust?” 
I. Trust the Lord (5) 
 
A. With all of your heart 
1. There are different levels of trust. 
a. Level 1 - “I trust you as far as I can throw you!” 
b. Level 2 - “Flipping the Switch” 
c. Level 3 - “The Stretch” 
d. Level 4 – “At Rest” 
2. The word for trust means “to lay helpless, facedown, at the mercy of another”. 
a. It is like a soldier before a victorious general. 
b. Or a servant waiting for a master’s command. 
3. In Proverbs 3:5, trust is a picture of: 
a. Allegiance and Submission 
b. Confidence and Conviction 
c. Expectation and Hope 
d. Faith and Reliance 
4. In Proverbs 3:5, trust is a wholehearted commitment. 
a. Trust is a choice. 
b. “All your heart” means with “one’s mind, emotions, and will.” 
 
APPL – This level of trust stands firm and declares with a resolute heart, “I will trust the Lord. . .” 
• To meet all my needs 
 
Philippians 4:19, And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 
 
• When life is a battle 
 
Psalm 56:3-4, When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. 
In God, whose word I praise, in God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me? 
 
• When I am afflicted, abandoned, or persecuted 
 
2 Corinthians 4:7-9, But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. 
 
• Even when my health is failing 
 
Psalms 73:25-26, Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. 
 
ILLUS – My grandma’s example before she died 
 
c. God wants our whole heart because anything less is half-hearted. Half-hearted devotion leaves the door open for folly. 
 
B. Do not lean on unreliable substitutes 
 
ILLUS – Texting my wife, “I love you!” 
 
1. This includes “leaning” on your own “understanding.” 
a. The word for lean is like the word trust. 
b. Lean means to “rely on someone or something for help or protection.” 
c. Understanding refers to human understanding which operates in ignorance because it lacks God’s counsel. 
d. Therefore, “to lean on your own understanding” is to be “wise in your own eyes.” 
e. Scripture clearly warns against being a “wise guy.” 
 
Proverbs 3:7, Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil. 
 
Proverbs 14:12, There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. 
 
2. What are the signs of being a “wise guy”? 
a. Pride and haughtiness 
b. Being a “know-it-all” 
 
ILLUS – Roller rink disaster. 
 
Proverbs 16:18, Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling. 
 
3. Why is humility so important? 
a. Because we have no reason to boast. 
 
1 Corinthians 4:7, For who regards you as superior? And what do you have that you did not receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

Revelation has been an encouragement to Christians ever since John wrote this vision while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. 
 
The church was suffering terribly. Believers had already been persecuted heavily under the Roman Emperor Nero, and under Emperor Domitian, the church was about to suffer again. 
 
 In that day, Rome ruled with an iron fist. They were an invincible and immovable power. Jerusalem was in ruins, the temple destroyed, Jews and Christians alike were taken by the thousands to Rome to be killed in the coliseum. 
 
 This book strengthened their faith. They were reminded that God was sovereign and reigned over all nations, even the ironfisted Rome. 
 
 This book strengthens faith of believers today. This world is in trouble. The storm clouds we have seen on the horizon are raining trouble on the earth. But storm clouds that are greater still are forming; these are just the beginning of birth pangs. 
 
 Faith is strengthened when you see how all this ends. We are now living in what could be called the trouble before the trouble. These birth pangs will grow greater in intensity and closer together as the time of the end draws near. The Antichrist will arise who will bring peace and safety. But then, while they are saying “peace and safety” terror will come upon them suddenly like a thief in the night. That’s what we are seeing now in Revelation. It’s the revealing of Jesus Christ through the events that take place when the wrath of God is poured out on the earth. 
 
 
In his vision given to him by God, John is taken by the Spirit into heaven. He saw a sea of glass like crystal upon which he saw a great throne. He who sat upon it had a scroll in His right hand with writing on the inside and the back. It was sealed with seven seals. 
 
No one was found worthy to open the book and break the seals. At first this causes John to weep, but one of the elders said, “Stop weeping, the Lion from the tribe of Judah has overcome so as to open the book and break the seven seals.” But when John looked, he saw not a Lion, but a Lamb as though slain. 
 
 As the Lamb breaks each of the seven seals of the scroll of the book, each one unleashes an event of the coming seven-year Tribulation which is the wrath of God poured out on the world. 
 
The first four seals reveal the four horsemen of the Apocalypse that brought first the deceiver, the Antichrist, then people slaying one another and war, then economic collapse and finally death and Hades. 
 
 When the Lamb breaks the seventh seal of the scroll, it will set forth seven trumpets, each of each of those 7 trumpets will declare more apocalyptic events of the wrath of God during the Tribulation. 
 
 However, after the sixth seal of the scroll is broken, the bondservants of God living on the earth at the time receive a seal on their foreheads. We are then given the actual number…144,000 who receive this mark on their forehead. These are 144,000 Jewish believers in Jesus Christ who become witnesses of the gospel. 
 
 After this, John sees a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches in their hands; and they cry out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” 
 
 Then there is worship in heaven as all the angels standing around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures fall on their faces before the throne and worship God, saying, “Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be unto our God forever and ever. Amen.” 
 
 Then, in Revelation chapter 8, Jesus, the Lamb, breaks the 7th seal, the last of the seals that sealed the scroll that was in the hand of the Almighty who sat on the throne. 
 
When the 7th seal is broken there is silence in heaven for half an hour. The sound of this silence is powerful.

Waiting for God can be difficult as well. 
2. While waiting for God to move in our lives, it is easy to get impatient or feel discouraged. 
3. But God has given us His Word so that we may know how to wait for God without getting impatient or feeling discouraged. 
4. Tonight, we are going to study a passage that will show us why God is worth it to wait and how to be at peace while waiting. 
 
Genesis 21:1-7 
 
I. God Has Not Forgotten You (1) 
 
• It may seem like God has forgotten you, but He has not. 
• In fact, there is a familiar pattern in the Bible regarding God’s promises. 
• First, God gives a promise. 
• Then the promise is followed by a divine delay. 
• The purpose of the divine delay is to test the believer, to see if they will trust God and stand on the promises of God’s Word. 
• In many ways, divine delays become opportunities or seasons of refinement so that believers will: 
o Grow closer to God; and 
o Become stronger in their faith. 
 
A. God is watching over you 
1. It had been 24 years and three months of waiting on God’s promises before Sarah conceived. 
2. God had said on two separate occasions, just months before Sarah conceived, that she would have a son the same time next year. 
a. First to Abraham in Genesis 17:21. 
 
Genesis 17:21, But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year. 
 
b. Then to Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 18:10. 
 
Genesis 18:10, He said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him. 
 
3. “Then the LORD took note of Sarah” 
a. “Took note of” means “watch over” or to “care for.” 
b. “To help someone in a manner that shows concern” because they are in a “difficult circumstance.” 
4. When God takes note of someone it means He is about to bring a great change in their life. 
 
Exodus 2:23-25, Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God. So God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice of them. 
 
APPL – If there ever was a time in recent history when God’s people needed to cry out to God it is now. 
• Hatred has increased as love is growing cold. 
• Lies are spreading like wildfire as truth is suppressed. 
• Wickedness is applauded while righteousness is ridiculed. 
 
2 Chronicles 7:14, “. . . if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (NIV) 
 
a. God heard the sons of Israel’s cry and called Moses to confront Pharaoh and deliver Israel from slavery in Egypt. 
b. When Pharaoh refused, God sent ten plagues upon Egypt, which left the empire devastated. 
c. After the tenth plague, Pharaoh released Israel and God guided His people towards the Promised Land. 
 
APPL – While waiting upon the Lord for a breakthrough, the silence and sense of divine inactivity can lead us to conclude that God has forgotten or is unwilling to act on our behalf. 
• Nothing could be further from the truth. 
Isaiah 49:14-16, But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me.” Can a woman forget her nursing child, and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me. 
 
• While waiting for God, we must remember that He has not forgotten us, He is watching over us. 
• While waiting for God, we must stand on the promises found in God’s Word. 
• Notice David’s example during a time in his life when he felt like God had forgotten him.

These are times that try men’s souls. Truly, the things that are happening in the world right now can be disturbing. But God’s word is a rock that strengthens faith. What an encouragement to study the book of Revelation; to know how all of this will end strengthens us to persevere. 
 
 We are living in a time that you might call the trouble before the trouble. Jesus said that the world will go through a period of trouble he called the beginning of “birth pangs.” 
 
 In other words, there are greater troubles to come. They will grow greater in intensity and closer together as the end draws near. But then, just as it seems things could not get worse, the Antichrist arises on the scene as a hero to be hailed, a type of Savior because he will save the world from great troubles. He will bring peace and safety. 
 
 But to this Paul wrote, “While they are saying, ‘Peace and safety!’ Then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.” 1 Thessalonians 5:3 
 
 In other words, we are now living in the time of troubles before the Great Tribulation which we are now studying in Revelation. 
 
In the book of Revelation, we are taken with John into a scene of heaven. He saw a sea of glass like crystal upon which he saw a great throne. He who sat upon it had a scroll in His right hand with writing on the inside and the back. It was sealed with seven seals. 
 
No one was found worthy to open the book and break the seals. At first this causes John to weep, but one of the elders said, “Stop weeping, the Lion from the tribe of Judah has overcome so as to open the book and break the seven seals.” But when John looked, he saw not a Lion, but a Lamb as though slain. 
 
 As the Lamb breaks each of the seven seals of the scroll of the book, each one unleashes an event of the coming seven-year Tribulation which is the wrath of God poured out on the world. 
 
The first four seals reveal the four horsemen of the Apocalypse that brought first the deceiver, the Antichrist, then people slaying one another and war, then economic collapse and finally death and Hades. 
 
 When the Lamb will break the seventh seal of the scroll, it will set forth seven trumpets, each of each of those 7 trumpets will declare more cataclysmic events of the wrath of God during the Tribulation. 
 
 However, after the sixth seal of the scroll is broken, there is a pause in heaven before the seventh seal is broken. That’s where we are in Revelation 7. There is a pause so the bondservants of God can receive a seal on their foreheads. We are then given the actual number…144,000 receive this mark on their forehead. 
 
A mark on their forehead? That sounds familiar, you might say; and you would be right. First, we know that the great counterfeit, the Antichrist, will place his mark on the back of the right hand or on the forehead of people during the Tribulation so that without this mark, no one can buy or sell. 
 
We ourselves, we also have a seal upon us, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit. There is also a scene in Ezekiel when the Lord said to a powerful angel, “Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.” 
 
I. God Always Has a Witness 
 
 It’s a great truth. God always has a witness. There will always be a faithful remnant, even if only a few. 
 
Illus – When Elijah was profit in the northern kingdom of Israel, he became so discouraged that it one point he said to the Lord, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts,; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” 
 
God responded, “I have 7000 in Israel who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” 
 
 Remember that the Great Tribulation is the wrath of God poured out on the earth.

Revelation 4 begins with the words, “After these things…” After what things? After Jesus spoke to the churches, preparing them for the events of the latter days, he describes the hope of heaven. 
 
 There will be many troubles that come upon the earth. The church will go through that period Jesus described as birth pangs. “There will be wars and rumors of wars, nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom and in various places there will be famines and plagues and earthquakes. But all these are merely the beginning of birth pangs,” Jesus said. In other words, troubles and trials will increase with greater intensity as the end draws near. 
 
 But ‘after these things’ comes the hope of heaven. Paul endured many trials and troubles in his life and ministry, but he endured all these things because he had the hope of heaven. 
 
Romans 8:18, For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 
 
 When you are enduring or even suffering, you need something to hold onto that’s beyond the suffering. You need a future that has hope. This world is filled with troubles; life itself can be difficult, but there is a future glory. You can endure the troubles of this life when you have such a hope! 
 
 For the believer in Jesus Christ, that future glory, that future hope is heaven itself. If you don’t have that hope, if you don’t have that assurance, let this be the day you find it. God is pursuing you; he’s knocking on the door of your heart. He wants relationship to you. 
 
But what is heaven like? Many would love a view into heaven. What is this future glory God has in store for those who believe in Jesus Christ? Is it a place of beautiful golf courses, or perfect fishing lakes or perhaps a place where you can eat the most incredible delectable food… and never gain weight!! 
 
 In chapter 4, John is taken up to heaven and instructed to write what he sees. There are no words, however, to adequately describe what his eyes see. It’s like comparing the colors a hummingbird can see to what we can see. 
 
We are brought with John into this glimpse into heaven. If we could only see what his eyes saw, but we have this description of what he saw. 
 
There is a phrase I have come to truly appreciate; “We are changed in the presence of a Holy God.” These verses draw us into God’s presence and gives a deeper understanding of His heart and character. 
 
John describes the scene: there was a throne standing in heaven and One sitting on the throne, radiant in glory. Around the throne were 24 thrones and upon the thrones were 24 elders sitting, clothed in white with golden crowns on their heads. 
 
There were also four living creatures before the throne who never cease to say, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty.” 
 
What is holiness? Oftentimes, when I’m teaching a class, I will ask that question. The common answer is that holiness is the absence of sin. But holiness is much more than that. Holiness is the character of God. 
 
God wants you to be changed to be like Him in holiness. It means that God wants you to have His heart and character. 
 
The four living creatures before the great throne are angels like nothing we can imagine, but these four living creatures represent the nature of Jesus Christ and the holiness of God. 
 
 The prophet Ezekiel also had a view into heaven. He also described the four living creatures before the throne of God. Jewish Rabbis taught that the four faces of these creatures in Ezekiel’s vision represent God’s greatest creations. They were also the images on the ensign, the standard, used by each of the lead tribes when Israel camped in the desert.

3. In Genesis 15, we are told that God promised Abraham that an heir would come from his own body, even though he was very old. 
4. After considering God’s promise, his old age, and the character of the One who promised, we are told that. . . 
 
Genesis 15:6, Abram believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. 
 
5. Genesis 15 could be characterized as Abraham’s “mountain-top experience with God.” 
6. But quickly we’re brought to the “valley of testing” in Genesis 16. 
7. In fact, the impact of the decision made in Genesis 16 is felt to this very day. Why? 
8. Because Abraham and Sarah failed to wait for God’s best. 
9. From this passage, we will uncover faith-building principles to help us “Wait for God’s Best.” 
 
Genesis 16:1-6 
 
I. God Knows Our Pain (1) 
 
A. Sarah’s Pain: No Child 
1. For Sarah, Abraham’s wife, it was being childless, that was her deepest wound. 
2. For Abraham, the matter was settled in Genesis 15; he would have a son from his own, old body. 
3. For Sarah, the matter was unresolved in her heart. 
4. Abraham was specifically mentioned, but Sarah was not. 
5. Yet, it is implied, taken for granted that Sarah was included. 
a. Note: Emphasis on “Abram’s wife.” (1) 
b. Conclusion: Sarah is included. 
6. Children are a blessing from God. 
7. In that day, there was great stigma for those who were childless. 
a. No child? “There must be sin in your life.” 
b. No child? “You must be cursed by God.” 
8. Their culture believed that parents lived on through their children. So, you were cursed with extinction if childless. 
 
APPL – Whatever the issue, struggle, or pain; God knows your pain and God cares for you. You can bring your deepest wounds, anxieties, and fears to your Father in heaven. 
 
1 Peter 5:6-7, Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you. 
 
B. Sarah’s Temptation: Hagar’s available 
1. Hagar was an Egyptian maid. 
a. She was young and beautiful. 
b. She was loyal and trusted, it appeared. 
c. But as an Egyptian, Hagar was outside of the covenant that God established with Abraham. 
d. Hagar was acquired because of compromise: Abram’s words to Sarai, “Say you are my sister so that it may go well with me.” (Gen 12:10-20) 
 
Genesis 12:15-16, Pharaoh’s officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. Therefore he treated Abram well for her sake; and gave him sheep and oxen and donkeys and male and female servants and female donkeys and camels. 
 
APPL – Notice that one compromise sets the stage for the next compromise. 
 
James 1:14-15, But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 
 
APPL – All of us are tempted. Temptation is not sin. 
 
Hebrews 4:15, For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 
 
• It’s what we do with the temptation that determines victory or defeat. 
 
2 Corinthians 10:5, We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ 
 
2. By the way, God struck Pharaoh’s house with a plague to protect Sarah and His promise to Abraham through her. But the table was set for the next compromise. 
 
II. God Wants Our Faith, Not Our Help (2-3) 
 
A. Sarah’s Assessment: “It’s God’s fault!” 
1. Sarah told Abraham, “Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children.” (2) 
a. God closes the womb. 
b. In 1 Samuel 1:5-6, it is mentioned twice in two verses that “the Lord had closed” Hannah’s womb.
