COVID-19 has radically impacted our world. Even graduation ceremonies have been modified due to the pandemic. 
2. But there is one thing that COVID-19 has not changed; graduates still face the same question, “What are you going to do after you graduate?” 
3. Now, what graduates are really being asked is, “What are you going to do when you ‘grow up’?” 
 
ILLUS – Malina’s conversation with her preschool/ballet buddy after watching Swan Lake. 
 
4. I think a better question for graduates and for the rest of us is, “What does God want you to do with your life?” 
5. God has a plan for our lives. There is a reason for our existence, for why we are here. 
6. In such trouble times, it is critical for Christians to know what God has called them to do and then do it. 
7. But many Christians wonder, “What does God want me to do?” 
8. Tonight, we are going to discover God’s plan and purpose for His people, the Church. 
9. God is still calling, and He is still asking, “Who will go?” 
10.The question is, “Will we answer God’s call?” and say, “Here am I. Send Me.” 
 
Isaiah 6:1-8 
I. We Need a Biblical Vision of God (1-4) 
 
A. God is King (1) 
1. Uzziah became Judah’s King when he was 16 and he reigned 52 years (2 Chronicles 26). 
2. Uzziah walked uprightly before God and Judah was blessed under his leadership. 
a. Judah prospered financially. 
b. Judah was secure with fortified cities. 
c. Judah had military success, possessing an elite army of over 307,000 soldiers. 
3. But when Uzziah died Judah felt insecure and vulnerable. 
4. Isaiah “saw the Lord.” 
a. “Lord”, Adonai means “sovereign,” “master.” 
b. “sitting on a throne” – God is the King of kings. 
c. “lofty and exalted” – Transcendent, Eternal. 
d. “train of His robe filling the temple” – Majesty. 
5. Judah’s throne was vacant, but the throne of heaven was occupied; it was then, it is now, and it always will be. 
6. The Apostle John declared that Isaiah saw Jesus Christ seated on the throne; a preincarnate appearance of God the Son. 
 
John 12:41, These things Isaiah said, because he saw His glory, and he spoke of Him. 
 
APPL – During these troubling times when our hearts may feel insecure, we need a biblical vision of God, like Isaiah. 
• Do not trust in princes. 
• Look to God. He is our help and our hope. 
Psalm 146:3-5, 10, Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit departs, he returns to the earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. How blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God; the Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord! 
 
B. God is holy (2-4) 
1. “Seraphim” means “to burn.” 
a. They are only mentioned here in the Bible. 
b. Seraphim burn in their zeal for God. 
2. Seraphim have six wings. 
a. Two wings cover their eyes – forever reverent 
b. Two wings cover their feet – forever submitted 
c. Two wings to fly – forever serving 
3. Seraphim forever proclaim the excellencies of God. 
a. Not merely stating facts or declaring truth. 
b. They call out to one another from the heart. 
 
ILLUS – Cheering at a high school football game 
 
4. Holiness is foundational to our understanding of God’s nature. 
a. Holy means “to be set apart, unique, distinct.” 
• Set apart from creation. 
• Set apart from evil. 
 
Habakkuk 1:13, Your eyes are too pure to approve evil 
 
b. The holy word is repeated 3 times, meaning God is without peer, complete. 
• The word “holy” is the only attribute of God that is repeated three times in the Bible. 
• So, holiness is the defining attribute and helps us understand God’s character and actions. 
5. “Lord of hosts” – Lord of the heavenly armies is fighting for you. 
6. “The whole earth is filled with His glory” – Where? 
a. Through creation. 
Psalm 19:1, The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.

1. What are you afraid of? 
 
ILLUS – Confronted by an unknown fear 
 
2. Fear is a powerful weapon in Satan’s arsenal. 
3. Is it possible to conquer our fears? If so, how? 
4. During our study we will look at a familiar passage, the epic battle between David and Goliath. 
5. But we will not study David’s defeat of Goliath. 
6. Rather, we will look at David’s example before he ever put a single stone into his sling to discover important biblical principles to strengthen our hearts when giant fears attack us, to Let Faith Arise. 
 
1 Samuel 17:31-40 
 
Context 
1. When we come to 1 Samuel 17, it is important to note that God had rejected Israel’s first king, Saul, because he failed to obey God’s commands through the prophet Samuel. 
2. God searched Israel for a new king and found “a man after His own heart,” his name was David. 
3. By the time we read 1 Samuel 17, the prophet Samuel had already anointed David as king. 
4. But David did not begin his reign immediately because David and Israel needed time for divine preparation. 
5. God allowed Saul to remain on the throne to reveal that: 
a. Saul was disqualified and rejected as Israel’s king. 
b. David was qualified and anointed to be the next king. 
6. At this point, the Philistines have barged into Judah, occupied Israel’s land, and added an “intimidation factor” by sending out their champion warrior, Goliath, with a “winner-takes-all” challenge. Here is the challenge: 
a. If Goliath defeated Israel’s warrior, then Israel would serve the Philistines. 
b. If Israel’s warrior defeated Goliath, then the Philistines would serve Israel. 
7. Day and night, for 40 days, Goliath taunted Israel’s army with the challenge. But the army of Israel retreated in fear each time, no one took the challenge. 
8. Then David arrived at Israel’s camp, and his heart was stirred when he heard Goliath mock the God of Israel and taunt men of Israel. Something had to be done. 
 
Transition – The first biblical principle for letting faith arise when facing your fear requires a choice, and that choice is: 
 
I. Let Not Your Heart Fail (31-37) 
 
A. God will not fail you (31-32) 
1. When David heard Goliath’s taunts and 
 saw the fear in the hearts of Israel’s soldiers, something stirred within him, a righteous indignation. David asked. . . (26) 
a. Who will defend God’s honor? 
b. Who will remove this reproach from Israel? 
2. David’s words were told to King Saul because it was the first-time words filled with faith had been spoken in Israel’s camp in 40 days. (31) 
3. Keep in mind that David was a teenager when he met Saul and declared, “Let no man’s heart fail on account of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” (32) 
4. Why was David so bold, so confident? 
5. David trusted God. David knew that God never fails. 
6. Simply put, David had faith in God. 
a. Faith was more than just another word in David’s vocabulary. 
b. David’s faith was real, living, and active. 
7. David viewed life and the trials that life brought through the eyes of faith. 
a. David saw the problem, but he also knew the answer, his God. 
b. David did not pick a fight but when the challenge came, he answered the call because he knew God was for him and not against him. 
 
Transition – This is how David lived his life. Listen to his last words to Solomon, his son. 
 
1 Chronicles 28:20, Then David said to his son Solomon, “Be strong and courageous, and act; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.” 
 
APPL – When trials come, does your heart fail? 
 
ILLUS – Waiting to leave Nairobi after the Kenyan president closed the country. 
 
• Let not your heart fail. God will not fail you. 
• Let Faith Arise.

4. And we have His Word, the Holy Bible, because God wants us to have His divine perspective and wise counsel to guide our every step when opposition, temptation, or difficulties come our way. 
5. Tonight, we are going to discover some of these divine principles from Colossians 3 to help us battle a very specific battle, often it is the battle before the battle, the battle between our ears. 
 
Colossians 3:1-4 
 
Context 
1. The Apostle Paul was in prison when he wrote this letter to the Christians in Colossae. 
2. Paul had never met them but was concerned for their welfare after he heard that they were under attack for their faith in Jesus Christ. 
3. Why would Paul be concerned about strangers when he was sitting in a prison cell? 
4. Imagine what the battle between his ears must have been like as he sat in that prison cell, how easy it would have been for Paul to feel discouraged, to complain, or even give up. 
5. How was Paul able to rise above his confinement and pen a letter which not only encouraged the struggling saints in Colossae but also the saints in every age since? 
6. From Paul’s example and his words in Colossians 3, we discover the keys for winning the battle between our ears. 
 
Transition – The first principle to help us win the battle between our ears is to. . . 
 
I. Keep Seeking the Things Above (1) 
 
• While our world is filled with many wonderful, beautiful things, it is also true that our world is filled with many vile things which can lure us away from God and into the shadows. 
• Today, you do not have to scratch too hard or dig too deep to find such vile, soul-destroying filth. 
• The truth is if you are looking for trouble, you will not have any problem finding it because often it is just one click away. 
• And with social media tracking all we do; it can also be said that “trouble is looking for us.” 
• You will find what you seek. It was true in Paul’s day and it is still true today. 
• So, the Apostle Paul, like a loving father or a wise coach, gave us an important principle for winning the battle between our ears, keep seeking the things above. 
• Why? 
 
A. We have been raised up with Christ (1a) 
1. The moment we are saved, we are identified with our Savior, Jesus Christ. 
a. All the blessings of Jesus’ death are applied to our lives resulting in the forgiveness of sin. 
b. And all the benefits of Jesus’ resurrection are applied to our lives resulting in the gift of eternal life. 
2. So, all the benefits of Christ’s death and resurrection belong to us. 
a. It can be said that Christ’s death is our death and His life is our life. 
b. Since Jesus has been raised up, we have been raised up too. It is a done deal. It is an accomplished fact. 
 
Romans 8:28-30, And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the first-born among many brethren; and whom He predestined, these He also called; and whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. 
 
Transition – In order for Christ’s victory to become our victory over the battle between our ears. . . 
 
B. We must have undivided hearts (1b) 
1. “Keep seeking” is a divine command to be continually obeyed until the day we take our last breath.

Words are powerful. 
2. Words can make you laugh, or make you cry. 
3. Words can motivate, or they can discourage. 
4. Corporations spend millions of dollars each year looking for that memorable slogan, that catchy phrase, to brand their companies and sell their products. 
 
ILLUS – Seven Famous Slogans 
 
5. During tonight’s study, we are going to focus on seven words from the Bible which are better than any corporate slogan. 
6. These seven words: 
a. Reveal God’s eternal roadmap for our lives and 
b. Reveal God’s desire for each of us to experience the fullness of Christ every moment of every day. 
7. The truth of these seven words is so profound, that I believe our lives can be radically changed when we begin to explore and comprehend the depths of their meaning. They are truly “Seven Life-Changing Words.” 
 
Transition – It is my prayer, that as we study these seven life-changing words, our hearts will be stirred to want more of Jesus because, as we will see, Jesus is all we need. 
 
Colossians 1:24-29 
 
Context 
1. When the Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Colossae he was in prison because of his faith in Christ and his proclamation of the Gospel to the Gentiles. 
2. Paul never met the Christians in Colossae, but he had heard that they were under attack for their faith. 
3. So, Paul sought to encourage them to stay the course and finish the race set before them; to stand strong in their faith, empowered by the Holy Spirit, doing all for the glory of God. 
 
Transition – Without wasting time, Paul got to the heart of the matter in verse 27. 
• Seven powerful words, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” 
• What is the significance of these seven words? 
 
I. Christ is in You (27a) 
 
• In Paul’s greeting to the church, he called them “the saints and faithful brethren in Christ.” (2) 
• This is an important point. Christians are in Christ and Christ is in Christians. 
• What does this mean? 
• First, we must understand God’s heart and will behind these words, “Christ in you.” 
 
A. Christ wants you, each of you 
1. In Christ, God’s mystery was unveiled, “the mystery which had been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints.” (26) 
2. What mystery has God revealed through Jesus Christ? 
a. Jews are reconciled to God through Jesus. 
b. Gentiles are also reconciled to God through Jesus. 
c. Jews and Gentiles are one body, on equal footing, before God through Jesus Christ. 
 
ILLUS – Sharing with the pastors in Mwanza, Tanzania that Christ has broken “down the dividing wall.” 
 
Galatians 3:28, There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave or free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 
 
APPL – Oh how our lives will radically change when we realize how much God loves us and wants to heal our brokenness. It will give us strength for our todays and a great hope for our tomorrows. 
 
B. Christ wants you, all of you 
1. Through His death on the cross, Jesus paid the price to rescue us out of slavery to sin and the fate of eternal judgment so that we might become daughters and sons in God’s family. 
 
Colossians 1:13-14, For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 
 
2. How does Jesus’ death do all of this for us? 
 
The moment we place our faith in Jesus and confess Him as our Savior: 
a. Our sin is forgiven, 
b. We are adopted into God’s family, 
c. And through the Holy Spirit, Christ dwells in us and is changing us to make us look more like Jesus. 
 
1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. 
 
What does it mean that Christians are a temple of the Holy Spirit?

From verse one of this book we understand that this is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond servants the things which must shortly take place. Jesus then sent and communicated this Revelation by His angel to His bondservant, John. 
 
In other words, God the Father wants us to receive this Revelation. John also wrote that whoever reads and hears and takes heed to the things written in the words of this prophecy will be blessed. 
 
It’s called “The Revelation,” in the Greek. It is translated, the apocalypse, and it means, “The Revealing,” or “The Unveiling.” When people think of the word ‘apocalypse,’ what comes to their mind is mass destruction, chaos, and suffering, but God uses this book to reveal Jesus Christ, especially as Lord over all the earth in the latter days. Jesus is the center of this book. 
 
The Revelation was not sent to strike fear in the church, although for those in the world who don’t know Christ there could be considerable cause for concern. But for the church, it was sent to encourage and strengthen your faith, it was written so you might know that God wrote the end before there was even a beginning. He is Lord over all the nations of the earth and he is our Champion who has defeated death and won for us our victory. 
 
As you read through Revelation, you see many symbols. Symbols are helpful, but sometimes difficult to interpret. 
 
Aviah and I were driving somewhere, and she wanted to practice giving directions using her tablet. At one point, she said, “Turn right on ‘Springwood Doctor.’” Springwood Doctor? It took me a minute to realize she misinterpreted Dr. for doctor. It became a running joke between us. 
 
Symbols are helpful because they transcend time. Language changes, but signs and symbols more clearly convey the thoughts and intent of the message. They also communicate the message more powerfully: it’s one thing to say that a powerful world leader will come on the scene, it’s another to say, “The Beast is coming.” It’s one thing to say that Jesus has authority, but another to say that He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah! 
 
Bible scholars have interpreted Revelation with distinctly different methods of interpretation. These are basically four methods: 
 
Spiritually – this approach teaches that the book is simply a collection of spiritual lessons and does not contain prophetic words at all. 
 
The Preterist – this approach teaches that the events described all took place in the first century; everything has already been fulfilled. There are several problems with this view. The biggest problem is that the events they say fulfill this prophecy took place about 25 years before the book was even written. 
 
The Historicist – this view teaches that the book was written as a prediction of what we now call church history. Everything has been fulfilled, they say, but it was fulfilled throughout the entirety of church history. 
 
The Futurist – this view, which is the one I hold, teaches that the book contains prophecies of end times events including the rapture of the church, a seven-year period when God’s wrath will be poured out on the world called the Day of the Lord or the great Tribulation; the Millennial 1,000-year reign of Christ on the earth, and the final judgment. It speaks of the Antichrist that will arise on the scene and deceive many. It includes the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem and the nations of the world coming against Israel in the battle of Armageddon. 
 
Before we begin, we should understand the significance of Israel in latter-day events. There is a branch of Christian theology that believes that the nation of Israel is no longer spiritually significant or relevant and that all the promises given to Israel have now been given over to the church instead.

To quote from the famous American philosopher, Bob Dylan, “The times, they are a chang’in.” But they are changing in ways that are deeply concerning. We are seeing prophecy unfolding before our very eyes. 
 
 The events of the last few months are like earthquakes. This Covid-19 virus has impacted the whole world, but the 2nd wave of impact will be economic. The fallout from that has yet to be seen. 
 
The third wave that will follow will be famines as the fallout from the economic impact deepens. But to make matters even worse, there is a locust plague in Africa of what could be described as a locust plague of biblical proportions. 
 
Then recently, major flooding in eastern DRC destroying more than 3500 homes leaving 10,000 families homeless. 
 
These events should get our attention and alert us that we are seeing the beginning of birth pangs Jesus spoke of in Matthew 24 and 25. 
 
 We are living in perilous times, but how do we respond? Jesus said to prepare your life by renewing your faith and pursuing revival. 
 
In Matthew 25 Jesus continues to speak to His disciples answering the question, “Tell us, when will these things be and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 
 
 Jesus then gave the “signs of the times” so we can discern and understand the conditions that will take place in the world that will indicate that the time of the end is drawing near. The condition of things in the world that He lists are being fulfilled today. These are the “beginning of birth pangs,” they are like the buds on the tree that indicates summer draws near. 
 
 There will be wars and rumors of war. There will be plagues and famines and earthquakes that will grow with greater intensity and be closer together as the events of the last days draw nearer. There will be a great falling away, or apostasy, as unrighteousness of worldliness increases and most people's love will grow cold. 
 
 Jesus then spoke of the importance of watching for the return of the Son of Man and being ready. “The coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah, before the flood. They were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage and did not understand until the flood came and took them all away.” 
 
 “The Lord will come like a thief in the night,” Jesus said. “If the master of the house had known what hour the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert. For this reason you to be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you did not think He will.” 
 
 In chapter 25, Jesus gave two more parables about the importance of watching and being ready. These parables are significant because they give insight and understanding into what God wants you to do while we're waiting for His return. 
 
I. Be Ready by Being Faithful 
 
 A parable is given to teach one main point. One of my professors in Bible college used to say, “Don’t torture a parable to extract nuances of theology, for if you torture a parable long enough, it will confess to anything.” 
 
 When I first read this parable many years ago, I didn't know what a talent was, and I assumed it meant the gifts and abilities God had given me. 
 
 In an interesting turn, our modern word “talent” actually comes from this very verse here that we’re studying. 
 
 This parable is significant because it’s directly applied to your life. This is what God wants you to do with your life as you see the end drawing near. 
 
A. Spend your life well 
 
 God entrusts to you your heart, soul, mind and strength and expects you to use those things for His glory in your daily living. 
 He also gives you your abilities, your capacities to learn and to grow and expects you to use those for His glory as well. 
Luke 12:48 ...From everyone who has been given much, much will be expected.

2. In many ways, love is a simple concept and yet it can get so complicated in a fallen world. 
3. Is it possible to find real love? 
4. Tonight, we will look at someone who longed to be loved but never was; yet discovered how to be released from looking for unconditional love in a conditional world. 
 
Genesis 29:31-35 
 
I. All of Us Want to be Loved 
 
A. We seek unconditional love conditionally 
1. Jacob wanted to marry Rachel, Leah’s younger sister. 
a. Rachel was beautiful of form and face. (17) 
b. To put it kindly, Leah was not Jacob’s type. 
c. Now, Jacob brought nothing with him when he fled from Esau after deceiving his father Isaac for the blessing. (27:42-45) 
d. So, he worked seven years for Laban to earn Rachel’s hand in marriage. 
2. After seven years of working for Laban, Jacob’s day had finally arrived to marry the “girl of his dreams.” 
3. But under the veil of night, Laban switched Rachel with Leah and Jacob woke up to a living nightmare. 
4. Why did Leah go along with Laban’s scheme? 
a. Maybe she felt compelled to submit to her father’s authority. 
b. Maybe she was tired of playing second fiddle to her beautiful sister, Rachel. 
c. Or perhaps she thought it was her “last chance for romance”! 
d. We really do not know the reasons why, but one thing stands out as we read these verses, Leah wanted to be loved. 
5. To Jacob, Leah was a burden, a bother, a dirty, rotten trick. 
6. It did not take great discernment to see that Jacob loved Rachel and could care less about Leah. 
a. Sure, he took care of her physical needs, but his heart was with her beautiful sister, Rachel. 
b. Daily, Leah was reminded of the fact that she was still second fiddle in an orchestra that had room for only one. 
7. In verse 31, we are told that the Lord saw this too. 
a. The Lord opened Leah’s womb to conceive. 
b. But God closed Rachel’s womb. 
8. I am convinced that the moment Leah knew she was pregnant she thought, “I’m second fiddle no more!” 
a. You see, in that culture bearing children was considered a blessing from God. 
b. And, if you brought forth a son, even better. 
 
APPL – True love doesn’t come with conditions! But we live as though it does. 
 
ILLUS - A Second Chance at Life 
 
APPL – We live in a conditional world that loves conditionally. If you are not careful, it will suck you into their way of thinking. 
 
ILLUS – My brother, Mike, playing college football 
 
B. You cannot make someone love you 
1. Leah conceived and gave birth to her first son. 
a. Leah knew the Lord had opened her womb. 
b. The Lord had seen her affliction or misery. 
c. What did the Lord see? The same thing that everyone else saw, including Leah. 
o Jacob’s eyes would light up when Rachel came near. 
o But when Leah came by, Jacob had that “What does she want now?” look. 
2. Leah gave Jacob son his first son. (32) 
a. The name Reuben means “See, a son!” 
b. What Leah was really saying is, “See, I have value! Will you love me now?” 
c. But notice who named the boy, Leah. 
 
ILLUS – Abraham named Ishmael (Gen. 16:15) and Isaac (Gen. 21:3). Together, Isaac and Rebekah named their sons Esau and Jacob (Gen. 25:25-26). 
 
d. Where was Jacob? Did he not notice? Did he not care? Or was the boy just another mouth to feed. Jacob’s heart for Leah did not change. 
e. But God noticed. 
Hebrews 4:13, And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. 
 
3. Leah gave Jacob a second son. (33) 
a. Once again Leah acknowledged God’s hand while hoping that she would be valued and loved by her husband. 
b. Leah declared, “Because the Lord has heard that I am unloved.” 
c. What did the Lord hear? 
o The Lord heard what was said and how it was said over the years. 
o But God also heard what was not said. 
d. She named the boy, Simeon, which means “heard.” 
o Even if Jacob was not listening… 
o God was listening. 
 
Exodus 2:23, And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God.

The key to understanding Matthew 25 is that it comes immediately after chapter 24. In other words, this is part of the answer Jesus gave to the disciples when they said, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” 
 
 Jesus then gave the "signs of the times" so we might discern and understand the conditions that will take place in the world that will indicate we are in the last days. The condition of things that He lists are conditions we see happening today; many are being fulfilled before our eyes.

 Jesus also said, “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when it's branch has already become tender, and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; even so you too, when you see all these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door.” 
 
 Jesus then gives several parables to give insight and instruction on the importance of watching for the return of the Son of Man and being ready for the latter days. 
 
 He said, “The coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah, before the flood. They were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage and did not understand until the flood came and took them all away.” 
 
 He said the Lord would come like a thief in the night. “If the master of the house had known what hour the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert. For this reason, you to be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you did not think He will.” 
 
 Although Paul had something very important in 1 Thessalonians 5:4-6, “But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do but let us be alert and sober.” 
 
 Now, as we come to chapter 25, Jesus gives another parable about the importance of being alert, of watching and being ready. This is a parable about 10 bridesmaids who were waiting for the arrival of the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five of them wise. 
 
 This is a parable with great application and if we have a heart to receive it, this parable can radically change your relationship to the Lord. 
 
I. Jesus will Return for His Bride 
 
 Jesus uses the parable of a bridegroom coming for his bride but focuses the parable on the ten bridesmaids. 
 
 A parable is given to teach one main point and should not be overstretched to glean every bit of theology possible out of the parable. 
 
 But it is important to understand that Jesus uses the picture of Him being the bridegroom over and over in scripture. 
 
 Therefore, it’s important to understand what took place in a Jewish wedding in that day in order to understand what Jesus is teaching about His relationship to the church. 
 
 You might also be interested to know that many of our modern wedding traditions come right out of the same wedding traditions that Jesus spoke of here in Matthew 25 and in other places in scripture. 
 
A. Only the father knows the day or the hour 
 
 In Matthew 24:36, Jesus said that only the Father alone knows the day and the hour. That comes right out of Jewish wedding tradition. 
 Let's go through a typical Jewish wedding from beginning to end and see the similarities to the relationship between Christ and His church.

2. But what is true revival? 
3. There are many misconceptions and unbiblical views. 
 
ILLUS – Encounter with a Revival specialist. 
 
4. To understand what true revival is, we must turn to the Bible. 
5. Tonight, we are going to look at a time in Israel’s history when God revived His people 
6. During our study of 2 Kings 22, we will discover four principles for the revival of God’s people. 
7. It is my prayer, and I pray you will join me, that as we study God’s Word, there will be a desire deep in our souls to ask God to Revive Us, Oh Lord! 
 
2 Kings 22:1-20 
 
Context 
1. Judah had been led by two wicked kings for 57 years. Manasseh led Judah for 55 years and his son, Amon, led Judah for 2 years. 
2. Manasseh was so wicked that he built altars for all the “host of heaven” in the two courts of the Lord’s house. He made his son pass through fire, practiced witchcraft, used divination, consulted mediums and spiritists and even set up a carved image of Asherah that he had made in the house of the Lord, the very house that the Lord has chosen to put His name on forever. (2 Kings 21:5-7) 
3. The wickedness of Manasseh was so great that God declared Manasseh had done more wicked things than the Amorites who lived in the land before him. (2 Kings 21:11) 
4. And Amon was so wicked that his servants killed him in his own house. (2 Kings 21:23) 
5. Judah had fallen so far from the Lord that He promised to bring judgment against them. Judah needed revival. 
6. In this context, we are introduced to an 8-year-old boy named Josiah, Judah’s next king. 
 
I. Revival is Personal (1-7) 
 
A. Revival is for believers not unbelievers 
1. Revive comes from a Latin word which means “to live again.” 
a. It is something that is alive but is on the verge of expiring. 
b. Then life-giving air is given, and it is revived. 
c. Life-giving water is consumed, and it is refreshed. 
d. Life-giving nutrition is digested, and it is strengthened. 
2. Spiritually speaking, revival only occurs in the heart of a person who has a personal relationship with God. 
a. They are alive, but not as they once were. 
b. They are alive, but not as much as they could be. 
c. So, revival is for the believer who needs their faith reignited. 
 
Pastor Chuck Smith, “If there ever was a time in your past when you loved the Lord more than you love Him today, you have backslidden.” 
 
APPL – When it comes to their faith, Christians can never “coast.” 
• The moment a Christian begins to coast, they will lose valuable ground. 
• The moment a Christian begins to coast, they will suffer the consequences of a cold heart and a weakened faith. 
 
APPL – What are the warning signs of “coasting?” 
• You find yourself spiritually dry and dull. 
• Your life looks more worldly and less Christ-like. 
• Your love for God and the things of God has diminished. 
 
ILLUS – Sharing my heart for the Lord with a co-worker at Levitz Furniture. 
 
APPL – The Lord loves to revive His people 
 
Isaiah 42:3, A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish. 
 
B. Revival is one person at a time 
1. Revival is never a mass movement though God often moves on the hearts of His people simultaneously. 
2. Simply put, Revival happens when people want more of God. 
a. When you want more of God, you want more of His presence. 
b. When you want more of God, you want to please Him. 
c. When you want more of God, you fall more in love with what He loves. 
 
Chuck Smith, “The sign of a healthy church is when you see believers falling more in love with Jesus.” 
 
3. Notice the progression in Josiah’s life prior to the great revival in him, personally, and in the people of Judah. (2 Chronicles 34:1-8) 
a. 8 years old – Became king of Judah. (1) 
b. 16 years old – Began to seek the God of his father David. (3) 
c. 20 years old – Purged Jerusalem, Judah and Israel of idolatry. (3-7) 
d. 26 years old – Gave the order to repair the house of the Lord his God. (8) 
 
Growth or decay? 
• Fire or apathy? 
• The Lord loves to revive His people 
• May we press on towards maturity in Christ.
