1. With a sermon title like “The Keys to Happiness,” it would be easy to assume that this message will be something similar to what you would hear at a “self-help” seminar. 
 
2. But let me assure you that this is not a “self-help” seminar! 
3. Yet, there is a deep desire within all of us to be happy. 
4. Our world offers many opinions on what brings true happiness. 
5. Unfortunately, there has been confusion in the church as well. Sadly, it is difficult to discern the difference between some sermons and a Madison Avenue advertising pitch. 
6. So, let’s look at God’s Word and discover The Keys to Happiness. 
 
Psalm 1:1-6 
 
I. Be in the World, Not of the World (1) 
 
A. A blessed life is a happy life 
1. Literally, the beginning of the first verse reads, “Oh how very, very happy is the man…” 
2. The word “blessed” comes from a word which means “to go straight, go forward, set right, to advance in the way of understanding”. 
3. The word “blessed” is also plural which pictures a person who is blessed in many ways because of their relationship with God. 
4. Finally, this “happy” person is also aware and thankful that their heavenly Father is always near and will be faithful to meet their every need every moment of every day. 
 
Psalm 73:25-26, 28, Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever... But as for me, the nearness of my God is my good; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all Your works. 
 
APPL – The first key to happiness is to place your faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. 
 
Psalm 32:1, How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 
 
APPL – You might ask, “Why Jesus only? 
• That sounds exclusive. 
• Don’t all paths lead to God? 
• No, the only way to God is through Jesus. 
 
John 14:6, Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” 
 
• Therefore, the first key to happiness is to receive the gift of salvation that God offers through His Son, Jesus, for the salvation of your soul. 
Transition – So, the blessed life begins with Jesus and all of your future choices flow from your decision to receive Jesus as your Savior. 
 
B. A happy life is a holy life 
1. He does not walk in the counsel of the wicked. 
a. “Does not” means it is a decisive choice; it’s a resolution of will. 
b. To “walk” means “to go along with, to follow a way of life.” If one makes the wrong choice it will be their first step towards compromise. 
c. The word “counsel” means “purpose, plan, or way of thinking.” It refers to an attitude, a state of mind, or a viewpoint that determines the decisions a person makes. 
d. “Wicked” refers to someone who is guided or controlled by their fleshly desires, emotions, or impulses. They are unstable and morally loose; not necessarily as evil as they could be but superficial in their view of life and unconcerned about the consequences of their choices.

APPL – In today’s terms, what does this council look like? 
 
1 Peter 3:15, 18, … sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts… For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God… 
 
2. He does not stand in the path of sinners.

2. These words capture the events that led to the establishment of the New Covenant; the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ! 
3. Last week, we discussed how extravagant God’s love is for us. 
4. This week, the magnitude of God’s love for us will become even clearer as we see the great lengths that He went to set us free from the penalty of our sin so that we may enter into a relationship with Him through Jesus. 
5. It is my prayer that our study of Matthew 26:14-30 will cause us to love the Lord more deeply in return. 
 
Matthew 26:14-30 
 
Context 
1. During last week’s study, we read that a dinner to honor Jesus was held in the home of Simon, a leper who had been cleansed by Jesus. 
2. Other guests at the dinner included Jesus’ twelve apostles along with Lazarus, whom Jesus had recently raised from the dead, and his sisters, Martha and Mary. 
3. While the dinner guests were reclining around the table, Mary approached Jesus with an alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. 
a. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head and feet. 
b. Then, in a sign of humble adoration, Mary wiped Jesus’ feet with her hair. 
4. As the aroma of perfume filled the home of Simon the Leper, we’re told that the disciples were indignant about this outpouring of extravagant love and asked, “Why this waste? For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” (9) 
5. According to John’s Gospel, Judas Iscariot was the catalyst behind the apostles’ objection. 
6. Immediately after this, Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests and elders and agreed to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. (14-16) 
7. What an extreme contrast! 
a. First, there was the extravagant love of Mary who anointed Jesus with expensive perfume, perfume that she probably bought for her own wedding day or for the burial of someone very dear to her. 
b. Then there was Judas Iscariot, one who had seen Jesus’ miracles with his own eyes, yet, in spite of all that God had revealed to him, thought only of himself. 
 
Transition – In Judas, we see the nature of man and the depravity that we all have the potential to fall into. From this, we see why we need a Savior. The Good News is… 
 
I. Jesus Came to Seek and Save the Lost 
 
Luke 19:10, For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. 
 
• We must keep in mind the context and remember of the heart of our Savior because it has direct application for our lives. 
• What I mean is this; Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him, yet Jesus reached out to Judas and invited him to turn away from his plot of betrayal. 
• Here again, we have another contrast. 
o On the one hand, we see how low a person can go in their depravity. 
o On the other hand, we see how high God will go in His love to reach His enemies. 
 
A. Our choice about Jesus is ours to make 
1. When we look at Judas, we must acknowledge the “elephant in the room” and ask, “Why? Why did Judas Iscariot do it?” 
2. While several possibilities come to mind, each of them seems to fall short of being a reasonable explanation. 
a. For instance, perhaps Judas felt embarrassed when Jesus rebuked him in front of the dinner guests. But didn’t Jesus rebuke them all? 
b. Maybe Judas was bitter because Jesus selected three Galilean fishermen, Peter, James, and John, over him for leadership. Why not Judas? After all, he was the only “sophisticated Judean” in the group! 
c. Or Judas might have been disappointed because Jesus had not led a revolt against the Roman Empire. 
d. The truth is, none of these excuses seem reasonable.

Israel is preparing to enter the land God promised them. They’ve been in the wilderness almost 40 years. At this point, they are camped on the eastern side of the Jordan River, just north of the Dead Sea. They cannot see the promised land from where their camping. There is a range of mountains called the Abarim running north south parallel to the Dead Sea and the Jordan River. They are camping just east of this range of mountains. That’s important because of what happens in the verses we are studying today. 
 
 The focus of these verses is the relationship between God and Moses. God told Moses to go to the mountains of Abarim where he could see the land God was giving to the sons of Israel. Moses would not be allowed to enter the land of promise because Moses had rebelled against God’s command at Meribah near Kadesh. 
 
Moses misrepresented God to the congregation; he did not treat God as holy before the eyes of the people. Moses was angry and he allowed his anger to have more weight than God’s words to him. He did not treat God as holy. 
 
The sons of Israel were striving with Moses because they had no water. God wanted to demonstrate His provision by having Moses simply speak to the rock to provide water for them. 
 
When they first arrived in the wilderness they complained and cried out for water. God had Moses strike the rock with his staff and it flowed with living water. It was a beautiful picture of Jesus who declared, “I am the living water; let him who thirsts come to Me and drink.” 
 
Jesus became the provision of living water when He died on the cross. The Rock was struck, you could say, and we received life. But having been struck once, He need never be struck again. He died once; for all. Therefore, when they cried out for water again at Meribah, God told Moses to speak to the rock. If you thirst for living water, you simply ask and it will be given. 
 
But Moses was angry, “Listen up, you rebels!” he said, “Shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” Then he struck the rock; twice. He did not do as God instructed; he did not treat God as holy before the sons of Israel. 
 
 Moses rebelled against God’s command; he was therefore not allowed to enter the Promised Land. But God was gracious and allowed Moses to see with his own eyes the land of Israel. 
 
 There are great lessons in this story. There is spiritual maturity in Moses when he humbly accepts that he will not be allowed to enter the promised land. He doesn’t argue, he accepts with spiritual maturity. 
 
But he also asks the Lord to give the people a shepherd. This is the right heart; what great lessons there are in the story. 
 
I. Maturity in Also Seen What You Don’t do 
 
 The first lesson comes from what Moses did not say. Moses was bitterly disappointed; it was his deep desire to cross over the Jordan… 
 
Deuteronomy 3:23, “I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, ‘O Lord God, you have shown your servant your greatness and your strong hand… Let me, I pray, cross over and see the fair land that is beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.’ But the Lord was angry with me on your account and would not listen to me; and the Lord said, ‘Enough, speak no more of this matter.’” 
 
 In spiritual maturity, Moses accepts what God says. He has learned to put weight to His words. That’s a great lesson for everyone; to learn to put weight to the words of God; to treat God as holy. 
 
 God needs to be more revered; more weight needs to be put on His words because the consequences are real. 
 
A. Accept what comes from God’s hand 
 
 Moses could easily have blamed the people for provoking him into an angry response. “You people made me so angry and frustrated and now look what you’ve done!” 
 
Illus – People have more control over their anger than they think. They could be raising their voice, shouting in anger and then the phone rings; and they answer sweet as honey.

The verses of our study introduce us to a man named Balaam. He’s infamous in the history of Israel, although he is not a Hebrew. He lived in Mesopotamia, a great distance away from where Israel was camped in the wilderness, in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan opposite the city of Jericho. 
 
 Israel had military victories over the Amorites and the people of Bashan, so Moab was in great fear because the people of Israel were numerous, and they had seen all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 
 
 The king of Moab at that time was Balak. He sent elders from Moab and Midian to hire Balaam to bring a curse against Israel because Israel was too mighty to defeat in battle. 
 
 There is debate whether Balaam was a prophet. It is clear from this story that he received instructions from God and heard God’s voice, but it is also clear that his heart was not right. In fact, the scripture refers to this unfolding story as the ‘error of Balaam.’ 
 
 Balak offered to pay Balaam to curse Israel. At first, God instructed Balaam not to go, “You shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.” Balak, however, not taking no for an answer, sent greater emissaries with offers of more money, saying, “I will honor you richly, please come and curse this people for me.” This time, God allowed Balaam to go, but with a firm warning that he must speak only as he was instructed. 
 
Balaam becomes an important figure in the Bible. He is mentioned by name more than 60 times. He is mentioned three times in the New Testament, but never in a good light. 
 
 There are three parts to this story. Balaam knows he must say only what God tells him to say, and he knows that Israel is blessed and cannot be cursed. But he also wants the riches offered by Balak and so he makes the journey with the elders of Moab and Midian to see what opportunities might arise. 
 The second part of the story is the fact that Israel is blessed of God and cannot be cursed. They may have grumbled and complained and had bitter hearts, but they are still His people. The promises of God still stand; those who bless Israel will be blessed and those who curse Israel will be cursed. 
 
 The third lesson comes at the end of the story. Balaam goes with the elders of Moab and Midian, but God only speaks blessings over Israel. In other words, he was hired to curse Israel, but he can’t. But Balaam still wants the riches, so he counsels Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel. He knows that Israel cannot be cursed, but he also knows that if the people of Israel can be tempted to sin against God, a wedge would be driven between the people and the Lord. 
 
I. Strengthen the Character Within 
 
 We can learn from the error of Balaam. This is spiritual warfare. Balak realizes he cannot defeat the armies of Israel, so he offers to pay Balaam to bring a curse. That is the very definition of spiritual warfare. 
 
 You and I are also in spiritual warfare today and there are principles here that apply to us as well. The enemy would very much like to defeat you. If he can get you to compromise your character, he will have won a key battle. You must decide the course of your life. 
 
A. Listen when God warns 
 
 One of the lessons we learn early on in this story is to listen when God gives a warning. 
 
 God warned Balaam before he left with the leaders of Moab, saying, “Only the word which I speak to you shall you do.” In other words, “say what I tell you to say and don’t add a single word to it.” 
 God warned him again when the angel of the Lord met him along the way… because the Lord knew the motives of his heart. 
Numbers 22:22, 35, God was angry because he was going, and the angel of the Lord took a stand in the way as an adversary against him… The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but you shall speak only the word which I shall tell you.”

Nothing in the word is written down by accident. Every word has a purpose. 
Deuteronomy 4:2 You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you. 
 New Testament is in the Old Testament concealed, and the Old Testament is in the New Testament revealed. (Example Lamb of the old testament type of Christ.) 
 
Joshua 3:3- 5, and they commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God with the Levitical priests carrying it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it. However, there shall be between you and it a distance of about 2,000 cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you shall go, for you have not passed this way before.” 
 
Then Joshua said to the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” And Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over ahead of the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went ahead of the people. 
 
Joshua 3:11-17, Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over ahead of you into the Jordan. Now then, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man for each tribe. It shall come about when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, and the waters which are flowing down from above will stand in one heap.” 
So when the people set out from their tents to cross the Jordan with the priests carrying the ark of the covenant before the people, and when those who carried the ark came into the Jordan, and the feet of the priests carrying the ark were dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks all the days of harvest), the waters which were flowing down from above stood and rose up in one heap, a great distance away at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those which were flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. So the people crossed opposite Jericho. And the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan while all Israel crossed on dry ground until all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan. 
I. Let Nothing Stand in the Way 
 
 Something blocked the way of Israel. They cannot cross over to the promised land. 
 
A. The old man stands in the way of spiritual maturity 
 
 The river flowed from Adam – a picture of the old man. 
 
 The river flowed into the Dead Sea – there is no life there in the dead sea. Dead works flow out of Adam, the old man. 
 
 Our best works just leads to death without Christ. 
 
II. But I am saved! 
 
 Nation of Israel was already saved. (Passover) 
 
 Baptized into Moses (1Cor10:2) 
 
 Yet something that flowed out of Adam restricted and kept them out of the promised land. 
A. What keep us out of a life of victory and maturity? 
 
 Unbelief - Old generation that did not believe had to die out. Unbelief in the work of Christ disqualifies you . 
 Fear – enemy instilled fear in them. Fear paralyzes you. 
 
B. The old way of the law does not work 
 Someone new had to come after Moses to take the nation into the promised land = Joshua 
 
 The law and keeping the law cannot break the cycle of our old nature. (Our own willpower and trying to do it ourselves.)

That title is hopefully intriguing, although it might also sound provocative. How is it possible that there could be a serpent who saves? What’s even more intriguing is that it’s a picture of Jesus on the cross. What’s even more interesting is that it was Jesus Himself who connected the events in Numbers 21 to Him being lifted up on the cross. 
 
When you come to Numbers 21, Israel has been in the wilderness almost 40 years. The issue in this chapter is the complaining and grumbling by the sons of Israel against God and against Moses. It’s almost 40 years later! 
 
Israel wanted to pass through the land of Edom in order to get to the promised land. Edom controlled the trade routes and passing through their territory was the most direct route. 
 
Moses sent emissaries to request permission, but they refused to allow Israel to pass through. This was discouraging and disheartening because the Edomites were the descendants of Esau and were therefore brothers. And because they were brothers, Israel did not wish to fight against them. 
 
 So Israel headed south to go around the land of Edom. They traveled so far south as to pass near the Red Sea, at the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba. 
 
But Israel became impatient because of the journey. Many commentators believe this would have been during the hottest part of the year and therefore a difficult time to be traveling this far south in the wilderness. Frankly, it would’ve been difficult no matter what time of year was. 
 
 In their complaining the people spoke against God and against Moses with the same complaint we have heard many times, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, to die in the wilderness?” They insulted God even further, however, when they said untruthfully, “For there is no bread and no water.” There most certainly was. And then they brought their complaining to new heights when they said, “And we loathe this miserable food.” In other words, they hated and despised God’s provision of manna. 
 
 God uses difficult times to train and prepare you for what He knows is coming into your life in the future. God is building character and strengthening faith. 
 
What did God expect? God expected them to persevere; to master the wilderness before it mastered them. Yes, the wilderness was difficult; it was adversity. But God chooses difficulties and adversities to bring spiritual maturity. Wouldn’t it have been better if they could have responded by saying, “Yes, this is hard, but God is preparing us for better things to come.” 
 
I. Complainers Complain 
 
 A tree is known by its fruit. The root of discontent and complaining is the heart. Complainers complain. There’s always something for complainers to complain about. 
 
 These are the children of complainers. Do sons have to be like their fathers? 
 
Numbers 14:18, “The Lord is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations.” 
 
 It means that God will visit the children to the third and fourth generations to see if the iniquity of the fathers continues. 
 
 You do not have to be like your father; this can end. It can end with you and it can end right here. Let this be the generation in which God does a new work. 
 
A. Rise above your circumstances 
 
 There is a bigger picture; there are deeper things. Some people live only in the moment and according to the circumstances. 
 
 They were weary, impatient and tired. They had to turn south. That’s not the right direction and they knew it; it made them discouraged. 
 
 It’s one thing to complain, but it’s another thing to complain against God and that’s what they were doing. 
 
 Jesus said that the word of God is sown among men with different types of hearts. Some hearts are hard and cannot receive the word of God at all. Some receive the word with joy, at least at first, but when affliction or adversity arises, they are offended. And in this they accuse God.

What would you say if I asked you to identify THE greatest Sports event of all time? 
 
A lot of choices - not so easy to pick THE greatest! 
When Jesus Christ was asked what the greatest thing a human being can do in God’s sight, He didn’t hesitate. 
 
This evening we’re going to talk about this - about a meal that Jesus shared with Rabbi Simon and a Prostitute. 
 
I. SIN FORGIVEN 
 
When the Bible’s says “a sinful life” that’s the simple way of saying she led the life of a prostitute. 
 
Simon has a spiritual problem we see on display here. 
 
• Simon is able to say “she” in a sinner but not “I” 
• He understood that she had sins of the flesh but was not able to understand that he had sins of the heart! 
• Spiritual arrogance - pride & self-hypocrisy upset Jesus so He tells him a story…a parable - 
 
 
 
 
 
A. Response to debt 
 
• 500 Denarii = $165K, 50 Denarii = $15K 
• Neither had the money to pay it back so the money lender graciously forgave the debt of both. 
• Jesus asked Simon; Which one will love the money lender more? 
 
Who are these people are in the parable 
• Money Lender = God 
• 2 Debtors = Prostitute & Simon 
 
The Point - the more a person realizes how big a sin debt they have and are bankrupt and can’t pay it - the more a person is thankful for forgiveness. 
 
What’s tragic is that Simon owed big like the prostitute but he thought $15K wasn’t that much. 
 
He simply couldn’t see it because of his arrogance. He had no chance of paying his debt anymore than the prostitute. 
 
B. God’s forgiveness activated 
 
3 ways God’s forgiveness is activated - 
 
• Recognize we are sinners 
• Recognize our debt to God cannot be paid 
• Recognize God’s undeserved mercy is our hope for for-giveness 
 
• All of these done by the prostitute 
• None of these done by Simon 
 
II. GOD TRANSFORMS LIVES 
If you are here today and you haven’t yet trusted Jesus in a real and personal way to be your Savior and Lord, this is a great message for you. 
 
There’s an amazing connection in the scriptures here for us - re-garding God transforming lives. 
 
• John 11 - the story of Lazarus being raised from the dead. 
 
John 11:1-2; Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 
 
• In our text, the prostitute is none other than Mary, the sister of Lazarus & Martha. 
• This is an amazing transformation of Mary - 
• This is what He does to every human life - He transforms us inside out -

In Numbers16, we come to one of the most difficult times in Moses’ life. In chapter 13, Israel refused to enter the promised land because of their lack of faith. They listened to the discouraging report of the 10 spies rather than the words of Caleb and Joshua who challenged them to take God at His word and possess the land God had promised. 
 
 You get a sense of the trouble to come when they hear the discouraging report of the 10 spies and then say, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” So they said to one another, “Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.” Little did Moses know that they would actually do it. That brings us to Number 16. 
 
 I mentioned last week that the heart is the key. The problem started shortly after they departed Egypt and has steadily been increasing in intensity. Numbers 11:1, “The people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of the Lord.” It’s difficult to make good decisions with a bad attitude. It changed them; they became spiritually weakened. 
 
 The whole point of leaving Egypt was to come to the land flowing with milk and honey. But there were giants in the land, there were mountains up ahead and the people became discouraged. They were defeated because of fear. 
 
 God then instruct Moses to tell the people of Israel that because of their lack of faith, “Just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will surely do. You asked to die in the wilderness and so you will; everyone 20 years old and older.” 
 
 In Numbers 16, however, it comes to open rebellion. Three men, Korah, Dathan and Abiram took action. They rose up before Moses along with 250 leaders and said, “You have gone far enough, for all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is in their midst; so why do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord?” When Moses heard this, he fell on his face. 
 
 These things were written for our instruction. We can learn a lot from the mistakes of others and there are many lessons to apply from these verses. 
 
I. Natural Man Rebels Against Authority 
 
 There is a vast difference between a natural man and a spiritually mature person. You were born in the nature of the human condition and in order to become spiritually mature, many things have to change, starting with the heart. 
 
Jeremiah 17:9-10, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the Lord, search the heart and test the mind.” 
 
 The natural man does not want authority over him because he wants to be his own authority. But the ability to submit to authority is a mark of spiritual maturity; because they understand the importance of being submitted to God. 
 
A. The root of immaturity is the nature of man 
 
 The nature of man is the root of many problems, that’s where immaturity comes from. But God keeps pressing in by His Spirit to move a person from their immaturity to maturity in Christ. 
Illus – A group from another church wanted a tour of our building …At one point one of their group said, “I see you have signs that say, please no coffee in the sanctuary. How do you enforce that?” “We don’t,” I responded, “most people will honor that, but I don’t want someone missing out on hearing the gospel over a cup of coffee.” That’s when he got serious, “Why in the world would you make a rule and then not enforce it?” “Because,” I said, “…some people are confrontational by nature. They are the ones who need the word of God most.” 
 
 The problem in Korah’s heart becomes quickly evident. He was not content with what God had given him. He was a son of Kohath of the tribe of Levi. 
 
 The Kohathites were given the responsibility of carrying on their shoulders the things that were most holy in the tabernacle. They could not serve in the tabernacle itself, nor could they see the holy things with their eyes.

In Numbers 13 Israel is at the very doorstep of the Promised Land. They have come to Kadesh Barnea in the wilderness of Zin. God instructed Moses to send 12 spies into the land, one from each tribe. They were to see what the land was like, whether the people in it were strong or weak, and whether they were few or many. And they were also to bring samples of the fruit of the land. 
 
 When the twelve spies returned after 40 days, ten of them brought back a bad report. “The people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there… The land devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size; and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight.” 
 
Two of them, Caleb and Joshua, brought back a favorable report and challenged the people to enter in and possess it for God would surely give it to them, for God was with them. 
 
 The people of Israel were at a spiritual crossroad. They must decide if they would believe God and enter the land of promise, or if they would succumb to fear and keep wandering in the wilderness. 
 
 There are valuable lessons in this story. Many will find themselves at a spiritual crossroads in life where they face a difficult decision, challenged by difficulties and faced with hardships no matter which direction they turn. Yet there is a way that brings the promises of God that requires faith greater than fear. In other words, faith will give you courage to move forward and receive the promises of God. 
 
 Paul wrote that what happened to Israel was an example for us that we should not follow after them in their disbelief because many of them were destroyed in the wilderness. 
 
I. Pass Through the Wilderness 
 
God never wanted Israel to stay in the wilderness. It was never meant to be their home. The point of bringing them out of Egypt was to bring them to the land He had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 
 
The journey in the wilderness was never meant to be permanent, He was bringing them somewhere; to a place where they could have a homeland and build a legacy of trusting God. 
 
God uses the wilderness to strengthen faith 
 
There is a comparison between God delivering Israel from the slavery of Egypt and God delivering us from the world. 
 
The promised land is not a picture of heaven, however. There are no Canaanites to be driven out of heaven, there are no giants there to be defeated. It’s a picture of spiritual maturity, of living in the promises of God and taking hold of them for spiritual victory. 
 
The wilderness, then, is a picture of what? That depends. For that generation who came out of Egypt, it was a picture of spiritual immaturity, of not taking hold of God’s purpose and calling, of not having spiritual victory; of having fear rather than faith. That generation died in the wilderness. 
 
For the generation who came after them, however, it was a picture of spiritual discipleship, of learning to grow in faith, of God preparing them for His promises. 
 
Deuteronomy 8:2, “You shall remember all the ways which the Lord your God led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.” 
 
The promises of God are not always a gift you simply unwrap; sometimes they come from facing challenges head-on and trusting God to be with you through every trial and every trouble. 
 
There are spiritual lessons from your time in the wilderness as well. In other words, there are many who have come to faith in Jesus Christ but have not learned to walk victoriously.

In Numbers 13 Israel is at the very doorstep of the Promised Land. They have come to Kadesh Barnea in the wilderness of Zin. The return of Jesus Christ is a topic that has raised a lot of questions and has even instilled fear in many. 
2. Last week, we studied the fourth part of a series called Things to Come, based on Jesus Christ teachings from Matthew 24:45-51. During that study, we addressed the wrong and right ways to live in light of Jesus’ return. 
3. Tonight, during part five of the series, we will focus on the second of three parables directed towards those professing to be Christians during the Church Age. 
4. From this parable we will discover how the Lord wants us to live our lives while waiting for His glorious return. 
 
Matthew 25:1-13 
 
Context 
1. Matthew 24-25 is called the Olivet Discourse because Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives when He taught His disciples about the end times. 
2. In Matthew 23, Jesus prophesied about the destruction of Jerusalem and Herod’s Temple because the Jewish leaders had failed to recognize and receive Him as Israel’s Messiah. 
3. Shocked by what they had heard, His disciples asked Him two questions: 
a. When will the Temple be destroyed? 
b. What will be the sign of Your coming at the of the end of the age? 
4. Jesus shared with them the “signs of the times” so that when we see them, we will know the end is near. Some of the signs that Jesus mentioned include: 
a. The coming of false Messiahs and false prophets who will mislead many people with their false teachings and deceiving signs. 
b. The outbreak of wars and rumors of wars along with famines and earthquakes. 
c. A great apostasy, a falling away from the Christian faith, as unrighteousness and worldliness increase. 
d. Tensions will grow between Israel and her enemies. Antisemitism will rise to unprecedented levels and will be accepted on the world stage. 
5. In the midst of this political, economic, and social upheaval, the Antichrist will rise on the world scene. 
a. He will be seen as a great diplomatic genius because he will succeed where others have tried but failed. 
b. The Antichrist will make a peace treaty in the Middle East between Israel and her enemies which will permit Israel to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. 
c. Because of the treaty, Israel will revere the Antichrist. 
6. But the Antichrist will reveal his true colors when he breaks his covenant with Israel 3 ½ years later. 
a. He will establish a new world religion. 
b. He will set himself up in the newly rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem as a god to be worshipped. 
7. Israel will realize that their “protector” is actually their ultimate “persecutor” and will react with great anger against his desecration of their Temple. 
8. So, the Antichrist will rally all the nations to turn against Israel and wipe it off the face of the earth. 
9. The Antichrist’s arrival will mark the beginning of seven-year period called the Great Tribulation. 
a. The Great Tribulation will be universal in scope, a divine judgment upon creation, the outpouring of God’s wrath upon unbelieving humanity and every rebellious nation. 
b. The Great Tribulation will also focus on Israel, to refine and prepare Israel for the coming of their King; that they may enter into His Millennial Kingdom. 
 
APPL – Where is the Church during the Great Tribulation? 
• With Jesus, her Savior in heaven! 
• The Lord will rapture His Church into heaven in order to keep His bride from that hour of testing because the Church is not an object of God’s wrath but an object of His loving grace and mercy. 
 
Transition – As we begin Matthew 25, Jesus gave another parable about the importance of being ready for His coming. 
 
I. Jesus is Coming for His Bride 
 
• While Jesus used a parable of the bridegroom coming for his bride, the focus is on ten bridesmaids. 
• We have studied Jesus’ parables before and noted that a parable typically taught one main point. As a result, it is important that we avoid stretching it in order to glean every tidbit of theology possible.

The events of chapter 11 took place in perhaps their second year of wandering in the wilderness. The chapter begins with a hint of a problem, “The people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of the Lord.” 
 
 Adversity has tested the faith of many people. Jesus gave a parable that the word of God being sown in the hearts of men was like a farmer sowing seed on various types of soils. Some seed fell on the hard path. When anyone is hard of heart the word of God cannot take root and the enemy comes and snatches away what has been sown. 
 
 Other seed was sown on rocky places. This is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; but it has no firm root in his heart and when affliction or adversity arises, he is offended and immediately falls away. 
 
 Adversity has shipwrecked the faith of many people, yet God expected them to walk through the wilderness with endurance; to be thankful they had been set free from oppression and slavery in Egypt; that He had provided miraculously for them in bringing water to quench their thirst and manna to sustain them on the way. 
 
 God wants us to endure as well. This is a troubled world, filled with adversity. Don’t allow your faith to be shipwrecked. Instead, strengthen your faith in the storm and know that God will use these things in your life. 
 
The cause of their complaint had to do with food. They grew tired of manna and began weeping saying, “Who will give us meat to eat?” 
 
What was it that God expected? He expected them to endure in the wilderness by having faith, by being thankful for what God had done, and by looking to what God had in store for them. He was taking them through the wilderness to get to the land of promise. He is taking them somewhere. Stand firm, be faithful and don’t complain of adversity in the hearing of the Lord. 
 
 There is a lot of personal application in this story. Israel being set free from their slavery in Egypt is a picture of our being set free from the world. This story is also a picture of those who find themselves discontent and complain of adversity. Let’s read the story and learn from their mistakes. 
 
I. Master the Wilderness 
 
It’s not that God expected them to defeat the desert, to somehow reduce the heat, or to make the desert green. He expected them to master the wilderness in the sense that the wilderness would not master them. 
 
Illus – Pastor Shawn and I were in Africa last year and I was struck by what I saw in the believers there. They have learned to suffer well. 
 
Israel had God; and God promised that His presence would go with them. He would be with them and His presence would be enough. 
 
The desert heat would always be there. It’s dry. It’s hot. It’s difficult. It’s irritating. The flesh stands ready to complain; but you must master it. You must learn to master the wilderness, or it will master you. 
 
They will not be ready for a land flowing with milk and honey, a land of abundant blessing, until they have learned to master the wilderness. It’s only when you learn that God is with you in the wilderness, that you are ready for a land flowing with milk and honey. 
 
His Presence is the key to suffering well. His Presence is also the key to being content with abundance. 
 
Illus – I had friends growing up who had every advantage. They had wealthy parents, they lived in a nice home, there was peace in their house. Their parents did not fight. They were nurtured and encouraged along the way. This is very helpful, no doubt, but somewhere along the way they are going to have to learn how to suffer and to suffer well. 
 
Others, like me, lived in poverty, had an abusive, alcoholic father, who lived in dysfunction and chaos. But suffering itself does not teach how to suffer well. Such hardships have shipwrecked many lives.

2. Jesus’ teaching actually started in Matthew 23, when He prophesied about the destruction of Jerusalem and Herod’s Temple because the Jewish leaders had failed to recognize and receive Him as Israel’s Messiah. 
3. Shocked by what they had heard, Peter, James, John, and Andrew privately asked Jesus two questions: 
a. When will the Temple be destroyed? 
b. What will be the sign of Your coming at the of the end of the age? 
4. First, Jesus shared with them the “signs of the times” so that when we see them, we will know that the end is near. Some of the signs that Jesus mentioned include: 
a. The coming of false Messiahs and false prophets who will mislead many people with their false teachings and deceiving signs. 
b. The outbreak of wars and rumors of wars along with famines and earthquakes which will grow greater in intensity and frequency as the events of the last days draw near. 
c. There will be a great falling away from the Christian faith, an apostasy, as unrighteousness and worldliness increase. Jesus said most people’s love will grow cold due to a rise in evil. (Matthew 24:12) 
d. Tensions will also grow between Israel and her enemies. Antisemitism will rise to unprecedented levels as the power and voice of Israel’s enemies grows stronger on the world stage.

a. He will establish a new world religion by setting himself up in the newly rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem as a god to be worshipped. 
b. In fact, according to Revelation 13, he will cause a living statue of himself to be put into the Temple. 
c. His associate, the false prophet, will cause the whole world to worship it. 
7. Israel will then realize that their “protector” is actually their ultimate “persecutor” and will respond with great anger against his desecration of their Temple. 
8. Then the Antichrist will cause all the nations to turn against Israel. 
a. The world will prepare for war against Israel. 
b. At that time, cataclysmic events will also occur in the heavens and around the globe, such as earthquakes, plagues, famines, scorching heat waves, terrible storms with hailstones weighing 100 lbs. falling from the sky. (Revelation 16:21) 
9. The Antichrist’s arrival will mark the beginning of seven-year period called the Great Tribulation, also known as Daniel’s Seventieth Week, or the Day of the Lord.

• “What is God’s heart towards us?” 
• Many people are convinced that God is angry with them and He is standing up there with a lightning bolt in His clinched fist ready to strike in His anger and might upon the first mistake! Even those of us who have received Jesus can still yet find ourselves having this perspective of God. 
• One of the greatest pictures we see in Scripture which tells of the Father’s heart towards us is in the story of a prodigal son where we see how the father responds when he sees his son return. 
 
I. The Father Pursues Us with His Love! 
A. At the beginning of Luke chapter 15, Luke tells us that there were a lot of sinners that were coming near to listen to Jesus. But the Jewish leaders, the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble about what they saw and said, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” 
B. What Luke is pointing out to us is that Jesus ate with sinners who were well known for their sin. They did not even pretend to be righteous like the Pharisees, they were just straight up sinners and Jesus ate with them! 
C. It is important to note that this accusation they made towards Jesus was huge because eating together, for the Hebrews, was very significant! It was a picture of commonality, or communion, or oneness of relationship. 
 
ILLUS: This begs to question, “Why would Jesus eat with sinners?” This is such an important point that Jesus gives three parables that people could relate to, one after the other, to give an answer to this question. These parables have everything to do with the Father’s heart and love towards us in that He came to seek and save that which was lost! 
 
1. The first parable is about a shepherd who has 100 sheep and one of them is lost. “Does he not leave the 99 and go after the one which is lost?” Jesus asked. 
2. The second is a parable about a woman who has 10 silver coins and one is lost. “Does she not search carefully until she finds it?” 
3. Notice that there are two parts to these parables and both parts reveal God’s heart. The first is the SEEKING; the second part is the FINDING! 
4. We see this also play out in the next parable in Verses 20-24 of Luke chapter 15. 
 
D. Luke 15:20-24 
1. Jesus here gives one of the most famous parables, the parable of a prodigal son. 
a. This parable is so powerful and important to understand because it’s all about the Father’s heart! 
b. Yes, it is about a prodigal son who sins, but it is all about the Father. If we could all be convinced of the Father’s heart for each of us! 
c. It’s in this passage we see that: 
i. The son came to his senses when he finally came to the end of himself. 
 He realized that even the servants in his father’s house are blessed. 
ii. He had squandered everything and then a severe famine hit the land and he began to be in need. 
iii. God will allow difficulties in our lives so that we will come to our senses and that’s the point where we wake up and realize what we had been blind to. 
 
2. Verse-By-Verse of Luke 15: 
a. God the Initiator 
i. Vs. 20 – ”20 So he got up and came to [a]his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and [b]embraced him and kissed him.” 
 We see the father looking and longing for his son, waiting for him, waiting for his son to return and the Father does the same for us. 
 We see here that GOD IS THE INITIATOR in that He is the One who is looking for us, longing for us, and waiting for us to return to be restored to Him when we drift off! 
ii. In Genesis 3 we also see that God initiated as he was seeking to engage with Adam and Eve after they fell into sin, to draw them to Himself, so they might return to Him!
