What is discernment? Webster defines: 
The quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure. - that really clears it up for us doesn’t it? 
 
There is no better teacher of discernment than the Apostle Paul. 
 
This is a narrative, a story, designed to help us see basic truths in action - in this case - through the life of Paul. 
 
Background - we are in the Summer of 59AD - Paul is in Caesarea, in jail for 2 yrs - This is the Roman Capital of the Middle East - Paul was sent there after the Jews tried to kill him. 
 
The Governor at the time was Felix who could find no charges against Paul but to keep peace with the Jewish leaders kept him in prison. 
 
Felix does such an awful job that Rome removes him and places Governor Festus in his place. 
 
I. The Religious Hatred for Christians 
 
What was once an original plot by 40 men - now 2 yrs later - has become official policy - Festus is new and under pressure by Jewish Leaders to keep peace and do them a favor. 
 
We live in a day that Christians need only take a bibli-cal or conservative point of view on any topic and be prepared to subject yourself to passionate disagreement or worse. 
 
We must remember that the resistance aimed at us from the opposing view is really not aimed at us personally, but at the foundation of what we believe. 
 
Matthew 5:10-12;Blessed are those who are perse-cuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 
 
A. Discernment may create difficult choices 
 
The Jewish leaders must have thought, we have got him now. Festus was a young Governor, a naive Governor, he had no idea about their plotting or to even suspect a plot against Paul. 
 
Paul’s spiritual discernment kicked in - he sensed some-thing was wrong. 
 
Special rights for Roman Citizens; right to appeal to Caesar himself if so desired. 
 
B. Discernment protects us

Armageddon. The return of Jesus Christ will be the most spectacular event the world has ever known. 
 
ILLUS – Interesting ways the world uses “End of the World” terms to describe significant events. 
 
2. The end of the world is a topic that has raised many questions down through the ages. 
3. Last week, we studied the second part of a series called Things to Come, based on Jesus Christ teachings from Matthew 24:15-28. During our study, we addressed two questions: 
 a. What does the Bible say about the Antichrist? 
 b. Will the Church go through the Great Tribulation? 
4. Tonight, during the third part of our series, we will focus on the Second Coming of Jesus Christ at the end of the Great Tribulation based on Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 24:29-44. 
5. From this passage we will also look at the three exhortations that Jesus gave regarding His return so that we may know how to live our lives in these last days. 
6. As I shared each week, it is my prayer that our study will strengthen our faith, increase our love, and deepen our hope for the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ. 
 
Matthew 24:29-44 
 
Context 
1. Matthew 24-25 is called the Olivet Discourse because Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, just east of Jerusalem, when He taught His disciples. 
2. Actually, Jesus’ teaching began in Matthew 23, when He prophesied about the destruction of Jerusalem and Herod’s Temple because the Jewish leaders had failed to recognize and receive Him as Israel’s Messiah. 
3. Shocked by what they heard, Peter, James, John, and Andrew privately asked Jesus two questions: 
a. When will the Temple be destroyed? 
b. What will be the sign of Your coming at the of the end of the age? 
4. First, Jesus gave the “signs of the times” so that when we see them, we will know that the end is near. Some of the signs that Jesus mentioned include: 
a. The coming of false Messiahs and false prophets who will mislead many people with their false teachings and deceiving signs. 
b. There will be wars and rumors of wars along with famines and earthquakes which will grow greater in intensity and frequency as the events of the last days draw near. 
c. There will be a great falling away from the Christian faith, an apostasy, as unrighteousness and worldliness increase. As a result, Jesus said most people’s love will grow cold. 
d. Tensions will also grow between Israel and her enemies. During that time, antisemitism will increase as will the power and voice of Israel’s enemies on the world stage. 
5. In the midst of this political, economic, and social turmoil the Antichrist will arise on the world scene. 
a. He will be seen as a great diplomatic genius because he will succeed where others have tried but failed. 
b. The Antichrist will make a peace treaty in the Middle East between Israel and her enemies. 
c. Part of that covenant will permit Israel to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. 
d. Even Israel will respect and revere the Antichrist because of this great accomplishment. 
6. But the Antichrist will reveal his true colors when he breaks his covenant with Israel 3 ½ years later. 
a. He will establish a new world religion by setting himself up in the newly rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem as a god to be worshipped. 
b. In fact, according to Revelation 13, he will cause a living statue of himself to be put into the Temple. 
c. His associate, the false prophet, will cause the whole world to worship it. 
7. Israel will realize that their “protector” is actually their ultimate “persecutor” and will respond with great anger against his desecration of their Temple. 
8. Then the Antichrist will cause all the nations to turn against Israel. 
a. The world will prepare for war against Israel. 
b. At that time, cataclysmic events will also occur around the globe and in the heavens, such as earthquakes, plagues, famines, scorching heat waves, terrible storms with hailstones weighing 100 lbs. falling from the sky. (Revelation 16:21)

The theme of the book of Romans is victory, yes, but it’s also more; it’s surpassing victory. That is God’s will for your life. God does not want you defeated. He wants you to have surpassing victory through Him who loved you. 
 
 He’s been building on this theme for several chapters; verse by verse, laying a foundation and then building upon it; truth by truth, precept by precept. The Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God. You have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which you cry out, “Abba! Father!” 
 
 The Spirit helps you in your weakness. And even though you do not know how to pray as you should, the Spirit intercedes for you, he prays to the Father in your behalf. 
 
 God works all things together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. What can we say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? For I am convinced, Paul said, that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is found in Christ Jesus our Lord. 
 
 Those are great promises. It’s when you hear such promises and take hold of them and live according to them that faith is strengthened. Faith is anchored to truth. That’s why Paul said in Romans 10:17, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” 
 
 That brings us to our current study in this short series through the book of Romans. In chapter 12, Paul gives the epicenter of what it means to live according to faith. It’s all about God’s transforming power. God doesn’t want to just give you truth, he wants you to be transformed by the truth -- so he sends that truth with power to transform your life. 
 
 That’s God’s will for your life. Paul talks about God’s will in these verses. Many people are very interested to know God’s will for their lives, but what they mean is that they want to know what God has in store for them. But the key to understanding God’s will is that He is first and foremost concerned with who you are and that you be transformed by His power, His truth, and His presence in your life. 
 
I. Be a Living and Holy Sacrifice 
 
 Paul begins by passionately entreating, beseeching them, “I urge you, therefore,” Paul said. 
 
 “I beseech you by the mercies of God.” These are strong words. Paul is imploring you, by the mercies of God, to be transformed… 
 
A. Present your body as a living sacrifice 
 In the Old Testament a sacrifice was something offered to God which represented the heart, “My heart is yours, Lord, so I give You this offering from my heart.” 
Illus - Last week I gave the illustration of someone who gives flowers on Valentine’s Day simply because it’s the thing to do on Valentine’s Day. Giving a gift simply out of obligation is empty; it means nothing. But when your heart does love and you give something because of that love, that’s completely different. 
 To present your body as a holy and living sacrifice is to say, “God I want to honor you with the strength of my body, the effort of my endeavors and the way I live here on earth.” 
 The body has many drives; hunger, thirst, and sexual desire, for example. If the drives of the body are allowed to be the master, you will be in trouble. Because the flesh is like a spoiled child; it wants what it wants; and it wants it now. 
Romans 6:13-14, “do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you,” 
1 Corinthians 6:12-13, All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with them both. The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.

Matthew 24:15-28 
 
Context 
1. Matthew 24-25 is called the Olivet Discourse because Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, just east of Jerusalem, when He taught His disciples. 
2. This message actually began in Jerusalem in Matthew 23. Jesus had just finished rebuking the Jewish leaders for their hypocrisy and their rejection of Him. 
 
Matthew 23:37-39, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” 
 
3. Jesus’ words were a prophetic judgement against Jerusalem and the Temple, which must have shocked the Jewish leaders, the crowds, and His disciples because Herod’s Temple inspired awe in all who saw it. 
4. The disciples, who were still processing what Jesus had said just moments before, pointed out to Him the magnificence of Herod’s Temple as they were leaving. 
5. Their comments prompted Jesus to say, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.” (2) 
6. Jesus’ prophecy came to pass exactly as He said for in A.D. 70 the Roman General Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the soldiers removed every ounce of gold from the Temple by setting it on fire and overturning every stone. 
7. Again, shocked by what they had heard, we’re told in Mark 13:3 that Peter, James, John, and Andrew privately asked Jesus two questions: 
a. When will the Temple be destroyed? 
b. What will be the sign of Your coming at the of the end of the age? 
8. Basically, they were wondering, “If Jerusalem and the Temple are destroyed, then how will there be a nation for Messiah to rule?” 
9. Again, the words of Jesus are important for us to understand the heart of our God and Savior. 
 
Matthew 24:25, “Behold, I have told you in advance.” 
 
Transition – Since Jesus told us in advance, we need to make sure we understand the things to come. Let’s begin with the first question…. 
 
I. Who is the Antichrist? 
 
• In verses 15-16, 21, Jesus said, “Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains… For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will.” 
• The Bible declares that there will be a seven-year period called the Great Tribulation, also known as The Time of Jacobs’s Trouble, The Day of the Lord, and Daniel’s 70th Week from Daniel 9:24-27. 
• As I mentioned last week, God has two primary purposes for the Great Tribulation period: 
o First, the Great Tribulation will focus on Israel, to refine and prepare Israel for the coming of their King; that they may enter into and enjoy His Millennial Kingdom.

The theme of the book of Romans is victory, even surpassing victory through Him who loved us. “Nothing can separate us from the love of God which is found in Christ Jesus our Lord,” Paul said. The church in Rome was living in difficult times; difficult and getting worse. They would need surpassing victory in the midst of troubles. 
We are certainly living in difficult times today; difficult and getting worse. We need to know how to have surpassing victory in the midst of troubles also. In other words, these words are not just for the church at Rome, they are for us today. 
The key to surpassing victory is understanding the relationship God wants to have with you. We read earlier in chapter 8 about that relationship; the Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God. The Spirit helps you in your weakness, even interceding, praying to the Father, in your behalf. God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 
And what can we say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? “For I am convinced,” Paul wrote, “that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is found in Christ Jesus our Lord.” 
That’s compelling. What an amazing relationship God desires. “I am convinced, I’m persuaded that God is able,” Paul wrote. God wants you to be convinced. In other words, it’s all about faith. 
But what about Israel? Were they not God’s chosen people? Did something happen? Did they not receive the law and the commandments? Did they not receive the promises? 
Yes, Paul would say, they had all those things. But they missed the point. They were pursuing righteousness through the law, but they did not arrive at that righteousness. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. 
Faith is everything. Israel had good news preached to them, just as we have had good news preached to us. But the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard it. 
In other words, Israel missed the point. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. Instead of receiving the promises God gave through His Son, they took offense. 
What Paul is saying is this. Don’t you miss the point. God wants you to have surpassing victory; the Spirit even bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God. God helps you in your weakness. God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God and are called according to his purpose. Therefore, if God be for us who can be against us? 
The promises of God will profit you only when it is united by faith when you hear it. That’s what Paul is doing in these verses; he’s strengthening your faith so you will take hold of the promises of God and live according to them. 
By the way, God is not finished with Israel. Paul loves Israel so much that he said in chapter 9 that if it were possible, he would stand accursed and separated from Christ if it meant the salvation of his brethren, the Jews. 
I myself am a supporter of Israel. I stand with them because I know that God has not given up on them. And even though they stumbled over the stumbling stone and took offense at the Son whom God sent, though they were faithless, nevertheless, God remains faithful. His promises never fail. In the end, Israel will be restored, and they will receive Jesus as their Messiah when He returns at the end of the age. 
The question is this; will you take hold of God’s promises? Will you live according to them? You will need faith; and in these verses, Paul intends to strengthen your faith. 
- Have Zeal with Knowledge 
 Paul says that he prays for them, for their salvation, because they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 
 Zeal is good. Many are lacking in zeal. But zeal without knowledge is not good. 
Proverbs 19:2, It is not good to have zeal without knowledge; and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.

The theme of the book of Romans is victory, even surpassing victory through Him who loved us. “Nothing can separate us from the love of God which is found in Christ Jesus our Lord,” Paul said. The church in Rome was living in difficult times; difficult and getting worse. They would need surpassing victory in the midst of troubles.

1. The end of the world. It’s a topic that has raised many questions down through the centuries. 
a. When will the end of the world happen? 
b. How will the world end? 
c. Who is the Antichrist? 
d. What country or ethnicity will he come from? 
e. What is the “mark of the beast”? 
f. What will happen to the Church during the Great Tribulation? 
2. Speaking of the Church, there have also been many predictions about when the Church will be raptured. 
 
ILLUS – NASA Engineer Edgar Whisenant wrote a book called 88 Reasons Why the Rapture Will Be in 1988. 
 
 
3. God wants us to know about the end of the world so He gave us His Word, that we may know the truth about the end times and be prepared for its coming. 
4. Tonight, we will begin a series called Things to Come, which will delve into questions about the end times by studying the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 24-25. 
5. It is my prayer that our study will strengthen our faith, increase our love, and deepen our hope for the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ. 
 
Matthew 24:1-14 
 
Context 
1. Matthew 24-25 is commonly called the Olivet Discourse because Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, just east of Jerusalem, while He taught His disciples. 
2. The Olivet Discourse is the third of three long teachings recorded by the Apostle Matthew in his Gospel. 
3. To get a sense of the context, it will be helpful to imagine the city of Jerusalem. Herod’s Temple stood at the eastern edge of the city with the Eastern Gate overlooking the Kidron Valley. 
4. Continuing east from the Kidron Valley, you come to the Garden of Gethsemane, which is where Jesus and His disciples spent much time together. It is also the place where Jesus spent the night praying to His Father prior to His arrest and crucifixion. 
5. As you continue east, you climb the Mount of Olives, which stands about 500 feet higher than Jerusalem. In those days it was covered with olive trees but they were later destroyed by the Roman armies. 
6. This message that Jesus gave on the Mount of Olives actually began in Jerusalem in Matthew 23. Jesus had just finished rebuking the Jewish leaders for their hypocrisy and rejection of Him. 
 
Matthew 23:37-39, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” 
 
7. Here Jesus prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem. Now this must have shocked the Jewish leaders, the crowds, and His disciples because Herod’s Temple inspired awe in all who looked upon it. 
8. Since the Temple has been a focal point of Jewish history and also for what will transpire during the last days, it is important to understand some of its history. 
9. According to 2 Samuel 7, King David wanted to build a Temple for the Lord, but God would not allow him to do so because he was a man of war and bloodshed. God told David that his son, Solomon, would build the Temple because he would be a man of peace. 
10. Solomon’s Temple was considered one of the great wonders of the ancient world. 
a. But Solomon’s Temple was completely destroyed in 586 B.C. when the Babylonians destroyed the city and took most of the population into exile in Babylon. 
b. The Temple was burned to extract the gold, which had made it so famous. 
11. 70 years later, when some Jews returned to Jerusalem, they were permitted to rebuild the Temple and the city. But the second Temple lacked the glory of Solomon’s Temple. 
12. Almost 500 years later, Herod the Great decided to rebuild the Temple, adding height, length, and splendor to it, hoping to make a name for himself along the way. 
a. Herod spared no expense. He employed thousands of the best architects, craftsmen, and stonemasons to build the Temple.

Romans is one of the most powerful books in the Bible; chapter 8 is the capstone of the entire book, and these verses we’re studying today are the great crescendo. Chapter 8 is about victory, but in these verses, Paul declares that you are more than conquerors - through Him who loved you. 
You become more than conquerors when you 1) understand who you are in Christ; and 2) understand what God has done for you in Christ, and then 3) respond by having faith in Him; a faith that is sure and steadfast through every storm; and 4) by loving Him in response to the greatness of His love for you. 
Paul has been building up to this through all the previous chapters. You were born in the sin of Adam, you were born with this flesh and will die with it, but you can be victorious; He has given the Spirit to transform you by changing your heart and your mind. 
This is an important key; you cannot be victorious until you’re victorious in your mind. Therefore, what your mind and your heart take hold of will determine whether you’re victorious or defeated. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ,” Paul says. In other words, when you hear the truth, the truth can set you free. When you hear the words of Christ you can defeat the doubts, the fears; the lies of the enemy and the world. 
For example, Paul wrote that you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons by which you may cry out, “Abba! Father!” When you take hold of that truth and write it on your heart, it will transform your faith. 
Paul is then straightforwardly honest; there’s a lot of suffering in this present world. The creation itself groans and suffers the pains of childbirth longing to be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We also groan within ourselves longing for something better because we live in a broken and evil world. 
But God helps us in our weakness. We do not even know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 
Then, in verse 28, we read those famous words, “We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” If you know this great truth, if you have strength of faith to stand on this great truth, you’ll look for it, you’ll watch for it. If you believe that God brings beauty out of ashes, then you’ll eagerly wait for that beauty and be watching. If you don’t believe, you’re left with ashes and are waiting for nothing. That is defeat. 
But you can be “more than a conqueror.” What does it mean to be more than a conqueror? That phrase is a translation from the Greek. It’s one word and we can understand its meaning without much difficulty – Hyper-Nikeo. It’s not just victory, it’s surpassing victory. 
I. Be Convinced that God is for You… 
 If you take hold of this truth and write it on your heart, and live according to it, you will be more than a conqueror. 
 If God is for you, who can be against you? There are many things and many people that may be against you, but Paul’s point is that if God is for you, none of those things can defeat you. 
 In other words, the fact that God is for you has a greater significance than anything being against you. This is a rock on which to stand. 
Psalm 27:1-3, The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread? When evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh, my adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell. Though a host encamp against me, my heart will not fear; the war arise against me, in spite of this I shall be confident. 
 Those verses show the distinction between defeat and victory. It’s all about faith. You’re defeated when your faith is shipwrecked, and fear makes you it’s slave.

Hypocrisy. No one wants to be called a hypocrite. 
 
ILLUS – A funeral fit for a king 
 
2. A lot of people don’t even like talking about hypocrisy. 
3. And often you will hear people say that they don’t want to go to church because it is “filled with hypocrites”. 
4. Tonight, we’re going to talk about hypocrisy in order to discover what it really means to be a hypocrite. 
5. But more importantly, we will learn God’s cure for hypocrisy along the way. 
 
Matthew 23:1-12 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 23, Jesus was teaching in the Temple. It was just days before He was arrested, beaten, crucified, and resurrected from the grave. 
2. In Matthew 21-22, the Jewish leaders challenged Jesus with questions in order to trip Him up so that they had grounds to accuse Him and ultimately reject Him. 
3. But Jesus knew what they were up to and gave them answers which revealed His wisdom and the foolishness of their rebellious, stubborn hearts. 
4. In Matthew 23, Jesus turned to the multitudes and His disciples to warn them about the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders. 
5. Since the word hypocrite is used many times in this chapter, it is important for us to understand what the word means. 
6. The word hypocrite comes directly out of the Greek language and into our English language. It literally means “to be an actor.” 
7. So, a hypocrite is one who pretends to have beliefs, opinions, virtues, or standards that they really don’t have. 
a. Hypocrisy is not simply failing to fully practice those virtues that one preaches or believes in. 
b. If that were the case, everyone would be rightly accused of being a hypocrite. 
 
ILLUS – For example, do you truly believe that we should… 
 
Ephesians 4:29, “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification” 
 
APPL – Now, do you consistently do this? 
• If you’re like me, you strongly believe this principle and truly want to master it, but you haven’t fully obtained it yet. 
• Is that hypocrisy? No. 
• There is some inconsistency in everyone’s life, including mine. 
 
8. True hypocrisy is the deliberate putting on of a mask, to make it appear that you are one thing when you are really something else. 
ILLUS – Eddie Haskell in Leave it to Beaver. 
 
9. As I said earlier, it’s common to hear people say, “I don’t want to go to church because it’s filled with hypocrites.” 
a. But the church has never claimed to be an association of “perfect people”. 
b. Rather, the church is filled with sinners who walk in the forgiveness of their Savior, Jesus Christ, and are seeking to have Him transform their lives. 
 
Quote – Billy Graham once said, “If you find a perfect church don’t join it: you’d spoil it!” 
 
10. Though the church is not filled with hypocrites, it’s not empty of them either; so these are great words for us to receive and apply to our lives. 
 
I. Fix Your Eyes on Jesus (1-10) 
 
• The root of hypocrisy is pride. 
o Pride is the fixing of one’s eyes on self. 
o Pride seeks to glorify or deify self. 
o Pride also seeks to gratify self. 
• So, God’s cure for pride and the hypocrisy that follows is for us to fix our eyes on Jesus. 
 
Hebrews 12:1-2, … let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith 
 
 
A. Then you will practice what you preach 
1. Jesus began by saying that the Jewish leaders had “seated themselves” in the chair of Moses. (2) 
a. Notice God did not elevate them to this position. 
b. The scribes and Pharisees promoted themselves to this position of authority. 
2. The final authority is the Word of God. So, when they spoke the Word of God, then Jesus said the people should follow what they said. (3) 
3. The problem was they did not do what they told others to do. Or to put it another way, “they did not practice what they preached.” (3)

Let me begin with a question; is there wind in your sails? Are you in a place of spiritual doldrums? God wants you to have life and have it to the full. Help is on the way. 
One of Paul’s greatest desires was to visit Rome. He wanted to impart spiritual gifts to the church there. Rome was the center of the empire and he knew that if the church could grow strong at Rome it could influence the entire empire for the gospel. 
Paul understood the power of the gospel; he was familiar with its power to transform. He had been a missionary of the gospel for many years, had endured many hardships, and had been part of many revivals. 
Paul wanted to impart spiritual gifts because he knew the power of the Holy Spirit is what they needed most. 
When Paul arrived in Ephesus on his second missionary journey, he found some disciples there and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said in response, “No, we haven’t even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 
Many today have certainly heard that there is a Holy Spirit but they have not experienced His power to transform their lives and bring the spiritual victory God desires. Without the Holy Spirit, there is no wind in the sails and what then are you then left with? self-effort. 
Many people find themselves in the spiritual doldrums. In the days of sailing ships, doldrums were extremely dangerous. At the equator, the winds could disappear altogether. With no wind in the sails, ships could languish for weeks with disastrous consequences. They could try rowing, but such self-effort was futile. Without wind, there was no hope. 
The same is true spiritually. The Holy Spirit is the breath of God, the power that moves your life to victory. The word ‘spirit’ in the Greek literally means ‘wind.’ 
John 3:8, “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 
 Wind is powerful, it can destroy a city, it can snap trees like twigs, but it can also generate power for an entire city and can move a large ship across the ocean. 
Acts 1:8, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” 
I. Our Father Helps His Children 
 All who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God, Paul said earlier in this chapter. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. 
Romans 8:15, For you have not received the spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 
 If we are God’s children, then we are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ. This is a key to faith. Paul builds to a crescendo when he says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” We need this truth written on our heart so that it becomes the foundation of faith. 
Illus - Of the six children we raised, three were adopted and I wanted all of them to know that if they were ever in trouble, call dad. “I’m for you, I will be with you. Even if you mess up your life, I’m for you.” 
 Paul says the sufferings of the present time - the suffering that comes as a follower of Christ in a broken and evil world - are nothing when compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us. 
 Then, over and over, Paul speaks of the groaning that comes with suffering; it’s part of living in a broken and evil world. 
 But this is also where our Father helps us. 
John 14:16-17, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is, the Spirit of truth… You know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” 
 In Romans 8, we receive some of the deepest, most practical insights in how the Spirit helps us.

In Luke Chapter 19, Jesus is going through Jericho on the way to Jerusalem to his last Passover and the crowds are growing larger in size. They have been amazed as they hear Jesus confront and confound the leaders of Israel with His wisdom. They have seen Jesus heal a blind man, as well. This parable in Chapter 19 has great significance because it draws us into an understanding of what God wants each of us to do with our lives. “Spending our lives wisely” is the message of the parable! 
PRAY! 
READ LUKE 19:11-26 – The Parable of the Ten Minas 
While they were listening to this, He went on to tell them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’ 
“But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’ 
“He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. 
“The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

“‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’ 
“The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’ 
“His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’ 
“Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ 
“His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’ 
“Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’ 
“‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’ 
“He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 
I. God Expects Us to Spend Our Lives Wisely 
• The whole point of this parable is that God entrusts to us our heart, soul, mind and strength and expects us to use all these things for His glory. 
• It is God who gives us our abilities, our capacities to learn and to grow and expects us to use that, as well, for His glory.

Luke 12:48 states “From everyone who has been given much, much will be expected.” 
• The picture of the wise servant is one who received from his master and then he invested it. In other words, the servant did something with what he was entrusted, which produced something more. 
• Though we don’t see specifically what he invested in, the idea is that he put it somewhere where it could grow and bear much fruit. 
• The point is to be about our Father's business with what He has entrusted to us. What is our Father doing? He's changing lives and that's what He wants us to be about, as well! 
APPL - We also see that God gives spiritual gifts to the church; but for what reason? 
Romans 12:6-8, We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. 
• Every spiritual gift is given for the purpose of building up and edifying the church…FOR STRENGTHENING THE FAITH OF OTHERS!

Matthew 10:16, Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves. 
 
1. We live in a world filled with temptations and no one is exempt from being exposed. 
2. Yet, as followers of Jesus Christ, the Bible declares that we can have victory over temptation because Jesus is our victory. 
3. This means that we don’t have to be slaves to sin any longer. 
4. So how can Christ’s victory become a reality in our lives? 
5. Today, we will discover life-changing principles from the Bible whenever temptation comes knocking, by looking at the example of Joseph. 
a. In Genesis 39, we will discover three tactics used by the enemy of our souls, Satan, to defeat us. 
b. We will also discover how Joseph was victorious against all three of Satan’s tactics. 
 
Genesis 39:7-20 
 
Context 
1. Joseph was his father’s favorite son. Jacob had twelve sons and showed his favoritism when he gave Joseph a special multi-colored coat. 
2. Jacob’s favoritism caused bitterness in the hearts of his other sons. 
3. Ten of the brothers despised Joseph and sold him into slavery. He was taken to Egypt and ended up in the home of Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials. 
4. Joseph had been betrayed by his own flesh and blood. It appeared that his life of favor was over. 
5. It would have been so easy for Joseph to harbor unforgiveness, bitterness, and even thoughts of revenge. 
6. It would have been so easy for Joseph to succumb to temptation and abandon his faith in God to live a sin-filled life because it looked like God had abandoned him. 
7. But Joseph did not do any of those things. He rose above it all and was victorious. 
 
Transition – Let’s look at the first way the enemy tempted Joseph… 
 
I. Tactic 1: The “Roaring Lion” (7-9) 
 
A. “Lie with me” (7) 
1. Potiphar’s wife “looked with desire at Joseph”. 
a. God’s favor was on Joseph so his master, Potiphar, put everything under his charge. (5) 
b. Joseph was like his mother Rachel, “handsome in form and appearance”. (6) 
2. Now, Egyptian women were known for their promiscuity. 
a. Potiphar’s wife was no exception to this rule. 
b. She literally commanded Joseph to commit adultery. 
 
APPL – Do not be surprised when the enemy gets in your face with temptation. 
• There are times, as we will see later, when temptation can be subtle. 
• But there are times when temptation comes like a full-court press in basketball. 
 
1 Peter 5:8, Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 
 
• So, we better know the answer when temptation comes knocking! 
 
APPL – 1 John 2:16 reveals that there are three main categories of temptation. 
 
1 John 2:16, For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 
 
• “The lust of the flesh.” 
• “The lust of the eyes.” 
• “The boastful pride of life.” 
 
APPL – It is important to note that temptation is not sin. 
 
Hebrews 4:15, For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 
 
APPL – Temptation becomes sin when we act on it. 
James 1:14-15, But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 
 
Transition - What did Joseph do when Satan came at him like a roaring lion? 
 
B. Response: Expose the evil with the light (8-9) 
1. Joseph’s response is so powerful. He exposed the evil of her temptation with the light, asking, “How then could I?” 
a. Joseph declared that he had been elevated to a position of authority, but it was authority with boundaries! 
b. Joseph had been elevated because he had been faithful to God and to Potiphar, so how could he break that sacred trust.

3. Tonight, we will study the question of all questions. 
4. In Matthew 22:41-46, we will discover the one question that will bring us face to face with man’s failure and also God’s remedy; the God-man. 
 
Matthew 22:41-46 
 
Context 
1. After the Triumphal Entry, Jesus returned to Jerusalem to teach the people in the Temple. 
2. While in the Temple, Israel’s religious and political leaders challenged Jesus three times; each challenge was an attempt to trap Him into a making a mistake so that they had grounds to accuse and reject Him. 
3. But Jesus knew what they were up to and gave them answers which revealed His wisdom and the foolishness of their rebellious, stubborn hearts. 
4. So, it was His turn to ask them a question, one which left them speechless as they pondered its meaning. 
 
 
 
I. “What Do You Think about the Christ?” 
 
• It’s important to remember how Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and the message it sent. 
o He rode into the city, from the Mount of Olives, on the foal of a donkey in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9; a declaration that Jesus is the Christ. 
o The crowd showed their allegiance by placing their garments and palm branches on the road while singing Psalm 118:25-26; a Psalm reserved for the Christ. 
o In opposition, the Pharisees told Jesus to make the people stop but He refused and declared the stones would cry out if the people were silenced. 
(Luke 19:40) 
o Jesus then entered the Temple and overturned the tables of the money changers and of those selling doves because the Temple, “His house,” was to be a house of prayer, but they had turned it into a robber’s den. (Matthew 21:13) 
o While in the Temple, Jesus healed the blind and lame while the children resumed singing Psalm 118. 
o The chief priests were furious and demanded that Jesus silence the little children. 
o Again, Jesus refused their request and allowed the children to publicly worship Him. 
o Then He quoted from Psalm 8:2 to show that this too was a fulfillment of Messianic prophecy, that He is worthy to receive worship, “Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies You have prepared praise for Yourself.” 
• The message couldn’t be clearer; Jesus is the Christ. 
• But Israel’s leaders would have none of it. 
• So, Jesus asked them one last question in order to confront the Pharisees with the reality of Who they were rejecting. 
 
A. “Whose son is He?” 
1. First, it is important that we notice the mission, “What do you think about the Christ?” (42) 
2. The word “Christ” means that He is the One anointed by God to carry out a certain mission. What is that mission? 
3. It is a divine mission, established before the foundation of the universe; that the Second Person of the Holy Trinity would come to earth and set free (redeem) people from their slavery to sin and the corresponding sentence of condemnation, an eternity in hell. 
4. So, Christ’s mission was to fulfill a divine work which ultimately results in the salvation of men and women’s souls. 
 
John 3:16-17, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 
 
In essence, Jesus was asking them, “Do you really see any need for this divine mission?” 
• His question has important application for us as well. 
• Do you recognize your lost condition? 
• Do you recognize your need for One to come from the right hand of God to save your soul? 
 
Romans 6:23, For the wages of sin, is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 
 
5. “Whose son is He” was not only a question about a mission. It was a question about the identity of the Christ.

opportunities - sometimes we squander them.

God does the same thing with us - He gives us incredible opportunities - 
 
• We will see Paul given the opportunity to speak and preach to the Greek elite, Athens most influential. 
 
• We will see that perhaps Paul didn’t take full advantage of the opportunity and he will describe that for us. 
 
In Athens Paul is like any other visitor, he went sightseeing. Amazed at the beauty of the city, the architecture, the great temples of the Acropolis, the Parthenon. 
But he sees over 3000 altars and temples all representing different gods and philosophies and his spirit is disturbed. 
• Sounds like the day we live in! Maybe not altars or temples, but we are saturated with that which is wrong and empty. 
 
Colossians 2:8; See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. 
 
Philosophy literally means ‘the love of wisdom.’ Unfortunately what was meant for learning and debate has been distorted on most topics. 
 
We are all guided by some philosophy - is yours a Biblical Philosophy or is something else? Are you guided by your parents, books, politics, television or perhaps the world’s race to succeed? 
 
Our philosophy will either bring that which is good and godly or destruction and death. 
 
Pastor Rich once shared the results of a survey taken several years ago. Youth across America were asked a series of questions: 
 
• 30% admitted to stealing something from a store within the last year. 
• 83% admitted to lying to their parents about something significant. 
• 64% admitted to cheating on tests. 
• Shockingly, 93% approved of their own character and ethics & 77% believed they had better character than those around them. 
 
These youth are today’s college students and graduates out looking to start their careers. At the time of this survey these youths could enroll in Philosophy classes at American Universities - such as: 
 
• Appalachian State Univ - “What if Harry Potter is Real?” 
• UC San Diego - “God, Sex and Chocolate: Desire and the Spiritual Path” 
• Georgetown University - “Philosophy and Star Trek” 
 
So let’s pick up the story with Paul in Athens, among the greatest Philosophers and Influencers and read about God’s Incredible Opportunity for the Apostle Paul. 
 
I. The Audience doesn’t Change God’s Message 
 
Paul was overwhelmed by the idolatry – went out on the streets to preach & reason with the Jews. 
 
He encountered the Epicurean’s and Stoic Philosophers. 
• Epicurean – pleasure as the chief goal of human kind. 
• Stoics – all about duty and self discipline which ruled their life’s philosophy. 
 
These two didn’t agree on anything, but they did agree on one thing; that Paul was crazy. 
 
• Paul’s taken to the Areopagus - “May we know this new teaching you are proclaiming?” 
 
• All the leading Philosophers are there – They must approve any new Philosophy that comes to town. 
 
A. Believer’s Responsible to Communicate the Gospel 
 
There is nothing new here - the Gospel itself was planned before the foundation of the world. Yet the Philosophers state they must decide if something is better solely because it’s new or modern. 
 
It doesn’t matter what they think - it doesn’t matter what people think when we offer them the truth. 
 
But this incredible opportunity is - 
 
• Like Billy Graham speaking to Harvard Faculty 
• How about our own Pastor Rich, a Beaver, being invited to speak to the UO faculty!

5. Tonight, as we study Matthew 22:34-40, we will discover the answers to those four questions, answers which will transform our lives if we embrace the truths found in God’s Word. 
 
Matthew 22:34-40 
 
Context 
1. The day after the Triumphal Entry, Jesus returned to Jerusalem and began to teach the people in the Temple. (21:23) 
2. The chief priests and elders saw Him and challenged Him, asking, “By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?” (21:23) 
3. Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?” (21:24-25) 
4. After reasoning together, they lied and said, “We do not know” because they feared the people for they all regarded “John as a prophet”. (21:26) 
5. So, Jesus told them three parables which were like mirrors that revealed the condition of their hearts; “The Parable of the Two Sons,” “The Parable of the Landowner,” and “The Parable of the Marriage Feast.” 
6. Next, the Apostle Matthew recorded three challenges from religious and political leaders, each an attempt to trap Jesus into a making a misstep so that they had grounds to accuse and reject Him. 
7. But Jesus knew what they were up to and gave them answers which, once again, revealed the hardness of their hearts and the wisdom of our Savior. 
8. Two weeks ago, we studied the first two challenges: 
a. The lawfulness of paying the Roman poll tax; and 
b. The resurrection and a woman married to seven brothers. 
9. Tonight, we will study the third test regarding the greatest commandment from the Mosaic Law. 
 
I. Love God 
 
• After Jesus silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees came back for another round of testing. 
• Sure, they had been silenced earlier when they tried to trap Jesus with the help of the Herodians, but this time they brought their ace, an expert in the Law, a lawyer. 
• The lawyer asked Jesus, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” (36) 
• At first glance, this does not appear to be a tough question but, at that time, there was a raging debate about the Law. 
• Jesus’ answer had the potential for creating a great divide among the Israelites. 
• Here was the issue; the Ten Commandments contained 613 Hebrew characters. 
• Using each of the 613 letters, the Jews categorized the Law. 
• One category had 365 prohibitive laws, things that one must not do. 
• The other category had 248 positive laws, things that one must do. 
• After dividing the Law into two categories, they further organized the laws by giving them relative weight, meaning, some laws were “weightier” than others. 
• These categories resulted in the perception that a person could focus on the “weightier” laws while ignoring the “lighter” laws. 
• The only problem with this line of thinking is that if you break one law, you are guilty of breaking the entire Law! 
 
James 2:10, For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. 
 
• Once again, Jesus amazed them with His answer because He answered their question in such a way as to cause them to consider their relationship to God, their neighbors, and even Himself! 
• Jesus answered by quoting from Deuteronomy 6:4-5, known in Hebrew as the Shema; which means “to hear”. It was the centerpiece of the Jewish morning and evening prayers. 
 
Deuteronomy 6:4-5, Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 
 
• The Ten Commandments are divided into two tables. 
o The first four relate to our relationship with God. 
o The last six relate to our relationships with others. 
• Jesus began with the greatest and foremost, our relationship with God, before He addressed our relationships with others. 
A. God loved you first
