Sometimes we find ourselves in the right place at the right time. Perhaps some of you sports fans are familiar with the story of Steven Bradbury… 
 
2000 yrs ago a Philippian Jailer was also in the right place at the right time - & his life radically changed too – Paul was on his 2nd Missionary Journey - with Silas - and the Bible tells us they came upon the city of Philippi - a Roman colony - in Macedonia. 
 
In vs 16, the text says “we”, not they, not Paul & Silas, but “we”. So we know that the author, Luke, a physician, was traveling with them! 
 
We are told of a fortune telling woman in this town – followed them around for many days – 
 
So of course you now have her owners upset about losing this revenue – so they drag Paul & Silas down to the city leaders. 
Focus on the Conversion story in our text which is always a great reminder about transformations, you and I, repenting and changing - reflect about your own conversion. 
 
The theme of the chapter is also Paul & Silas’ response to suffering. 
So think about your conversion and consider what we can learn about suffering for Christ. 
 
I. Be Strong in the Lord 
 
Discouragement often comes with troubles and we have to be very careful because the discouraged heart does not respond as God desires. 
 
There is a lot for us to learn out of these verses. We need to take hold of these spiritual lessons for our own lives. How we respond to difficulties and troubles is an indication of our maturity. 
 
24 put in inner cell like max security – now in Philippi the actual jail cell has been discovered – you could walk into it today… 
 
Their feet were fastened into stocks – spread wide - position placed to cause maximum discomfort – 
 
25 midnight praying and singing hymns to God – other prisoners listening – they were singing – we understand why they are awake – but praying and singing – not sulking or complaining, but singing – Paul was praising God. Every single prisoner awake and listening 
 
Perhaps they were having a conversation about their circumstances - hymn “great is thy faithfulness” - from Jeremiah in Lamentations 3 written during dark times. 
Lamentations 3:21-24; This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. The Lord’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I have hope in Him.” 
 
We are not surprised that they are going through troubles. Jesus Himself said, 
 
John 16:33; These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” 
 
We are not surprised that they are suffering. Jesus also said, 
 
John 15:20; Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 
 
What surprises us and encourages us out of the story, is how they respond to that suffering, to that tribulation. 
 
26 Violent earthquake – doors flew open – all chains came loose - Not luck, not fate, not a coincidence – but God answering the prayers of His people! 
 
This is not an earthquake story as critics may say. 
 
Jailer awoke to draw his sword to kill himself - but no one was gone – 
 
Philippi is part of the Roman colony – soldiers often retired right where they worked - this jailer probably a retired Roman soldier – he knew the risks...if he lost a prisoner he would be executed. 
 
Acts 12:19; When Herod had searched for him and had not found him, he examined the guards and ordered that they be led away to execution. 
 
Why would they stay in prison after this – who does that? 
 
Well if you hear someone praying, followed by an earthquake, followed by chains and doors blowing off - - think about it - -

 In 1789, Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter and said, “Our new constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” 
2. Many years later, Will Rogers joked, “The only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn’t get worse every time Congress meets.” 
3. Death and Taxes. Tonight, in Matthew 22:15-33, we will learn what Jesus said about both and, along the way, discover important principles from God’s Word which, when personally applied, bring purpose and blessing to our lives! 
 
Matthew 22:15-33 
 
Context 
1. Last week we noted that the day after the Triumphal Entry, Jesus returned to Jerusalem, immediately entered the Temple, and began to teach the people. (21:23) 
2. The chief priests and elders saw Him and challenged Him, asking, “By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?” (21:23) 
3. Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?” (21:24-25) 
4. After reasoning together, they lied and said, “We do not know” because they feared the people for they all regarded “John as a prophet”. (21:26) 
5. So, Jesus told them three parables which were like mirrors that revealed the condition of their hearts; “The Parable of the Two Sons”, “The Parable of the Landowner”, and “The Parable of the Marriage Feast”. 
6. Next, the Apostle Matthew recorded three challenges from religious and political leaders, each an attempt to trap Jesus into a making a misstep so that they had grounds to accuse and reject Him. 
7. But Jesus, the Son of God, knew what they were up to and gave them answers which, once again, revealed the hardness of their hearts and the wisdom of our Savior. 
8. Tonight, we will study the first two challenges. 
 
Transition – Let’s deal with taxes first… 
 
I. Christians have a Dual Citizenship (15-22) 
 
• When we come to this section of Matthew 22, we find the Pharisees counseling together on how they might trap Jesus in what He said. 
• They came up with a devious plan and, likely, they approached Jesus with an air of superiority because they thought their plan was foolproof. 
• Their plan was to find some way to get Jesus to say something against the Romans so that the Romans would come and silence Him. 
• But, if Jesus said something in support of Rome, then He would lose the support of the people for He would be suspected of colluding with Rome. 
• Keep in mind that the Pharisees were the purists of the nation of Israel and they opposed all attempts by Rome to intrude on their Jewish way of life. But their hatred of Jesus led them to partner with their enemy, the Herodians. 
• The Herodians were supporters of Herod. They supported Roman rule because Herod’s ruling authority was given to him by Rome. As a result, they were opposed to the Pharisees. But the Herodians hated Jesus more and they wanted Him dead. 
• In Mark 3, we’re told that after Jesus healed a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath, the two groups formed an alliance and were committed to destroying Jesus. 
 
Mark 3:6, The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him. 
 
• Their trap involved a question about the Roman poll tax. At that time, Roman citizens were exempt from paying a poll tax, so the tax burden fell upon those living in the provinces of the Roman Empire. 
• As a result, Israel was included, and each Jewish male was required to pay the dreaded poll tax. 
• Their question was simple, “Is it lawful to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?” (17) 
• Jesus’ answer shows that the true child of God has obligations both to God and to his country.

Israel is unique. God called them out of the nations to be distinct, to be different. God brought them out of Egypt from all the trouble and trials of their lives to be a Father to them; to be their God. They were therefore not to live as the people in Egypt from where they came; nor were they to live as the people in Canaan where they were going. 
 
 God gave them statutes and laws to show them how to live differently than the world. If they would honor Him as God, He would bless their nation and their land and each person who honored God in their hearts would be blessed. 
 
 God has also called us out of the world, to be distinct, to be different, to be a people of His own possession. We are not to live as the world lives; we are in the kingdom of God now and a whole different set of principles apply. If we will honor God in our lives and in our hearts, He will pour out His Spirit and His life on us as well. 
 
 In Chapter 25, He describes the Sabbath year which they were to observe every seven years. In the Sabbath year, they were to give their land a rest. They could not sow or reap or prune their vineyards. Anything that grew on its own was free to anyone and everyone. 
 
Giving the land a Sabbath rest would make their land much more productive. It was also a demonstration of their faith. When they took God at His Word and trusted that He would bless them if they lived in agreement with God’s word, they would see abundance and prosperity and would live securely in the land. 
 
 Farming methods today include rotating crops to give the land rest. If the land does not rest, it becomes depleted of nutrients and no longer becomes productive. 
 
 In the verses we’re studying today, God instructs them to have an additional Sabbath year, called the Year of Jubilee. It was to be remembered every fiftieth year. In the year of Jubilee, not only would the land have an additional year of rest, each family would return to the property they originally owned, and any Israelite slaves must be given liberty and set free. 
 
 There are many applications for us in these verses because these are prophetic of the ministry of Jesus Christ in our lives. 
 
I. God Wants You to be Free 
 
 The year of Jubilee was unique among the nations. 
 
 But it required faith; it required trust that God would do what God said He would do if they forgave debts, set free those in servitude, and gave everyone who needed it a new beginning. 
 
 Unfortunately, there is no evidence that Israel ever took God at His Word and honored these verses, thus missing the opportunity to revere and sanctify God by keeping the year of Jubilee. 
 
A. Jubilee is for releasing 
 
 Vs 10 – there was to be a release to every inhabitant in the land. In other words, if a Hebrew became so poor that he sold himself as a slave, he was to be released in the year of jubilee, receive back his original land and be allowed to start over; to have a fresh start. 
 
Leviticus 25:39-41 …Serve only until the year of Jubilee 
 Verse 10 literally says, “You shall proclaim liberty throughout the land.” Those words might ring a bell. 
 That exact phrase, “You shall proclaim liberty throughout the land,” is engraved on the Liberty Bell which rang out over Independence Hall in the city of Philadelphia on July 8, 1776 to summon citizens to hear the first reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon. 
 God wanted captives set free by the releasing of their debt. It was an opportunity to start over. 
 There were two sides to this aspect of the year of jubilee. For those in bondage and in debt, jubilee was indeed liberty and freedom. 
 But there were others who must forgive the debts and set the captives free. 
App – There are two applications for us as well. In Christ our debts are forgiven, and we are set free. 
But we need to be willing to forgive those who have trespassed against us. As we have been forgiven, should we not also forgive?

While the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s may have been rightly called the “Wedding of the Century”, the Bible declares that there will be a royal heavenly wedding that will top all weddings, the union of Jesus Christ and His bride, the Church. 
2. There will also be a royal heavenly wedding feast, “The Marriage Feast of the Lamb”, a wedding feast that will top all wedding feasts. 
3. The amazing thing about this royal heavenly wedding is that you do not merely have to be a spectator, you can be a participant; You’re Invited! 
4. In Matthew 22, we will discover the nature of the invitation and the response that God desires from us.

7. The third parable, “The Parable of the Marriage Feast” is like the other two, a call to look at one’s heart so that one may rightly respond to God’s heavenly invitation. 
 
Transition – The first lesson is this… 
 
I. God Expects a Response to His Invitation (1-10) 
• Today, when we send out an invitation, we will often write, “RSVP”, meaning “Respond if you please”. 
• In those days, they did not have a postal service, nor did they have social media, so they would send servants to give out invitations by hand. 
• Once the celebration was ready, the servants would knock on the doors of the invitees to let them know the feast was ready. 
• The point of this parable is that God is expecting a response to His invitation. 
 
A. There are no excuses when the King is calling 
1. The king had prepared a wedding feast for his son and made all of the preparations for a grand celebration. 
a. The animals were butchered and cooked to perfection. 
b. The wedding clothes were made with the finest of materials for the guests to wear. 
2. Everything was ready but where were the guests? 
a. Jesus said that some were unwilling to come! (3). 
b. Jesus said the slaves were sent out again but this time the wedding guests “paid no attention and went their way, one to his farm, another to his business”. (5) 
c. Jesus said others responded by killing the king’s servants. (6) 
 
APPL – Can you imagine making light of a king’s invitation? 
• Can you imagine refusing or ignoring a king? 
• Can you imagine killing a king’s servant when all the king wants to do is bless your life and include you in the wedding celebration of his son? 
 
APPL – There is a difference between a reason and an excuse. 
 
Quote: The famous preacher, Billy Sunday, once said, “An excuse is the skin of a reason stuffed with a lie”. 
 
A person gives a reason for saying “No” when they truly cannot do something. 
 
But an excuse is given when a person is unwilling to come and does not want to offend or does not want to be bothered anymore by more invitations. 
 
B. The truth is, some people refuse to change 
1. People make excuses or pretend to not hear because ultimately, they are unwilling to change. 
2. They don’t want to take responsibility for the truth or they try to shift responsibility from the truth. 
3. Sometimes it’s small and insignificant, but it’s still an untruth, nevertheless.

Leviticus is a book of worship, giving instruction about the sacrifices and offerings they were to bring as part of their worship. There were sin offerings and guilt offerings; we can certainly understand the need for that. 
 
There were also burnt offerings, although I don’t like the word burnt, it sounds like they can’t cook. These were offerings holy consumed by fire on the altar as a soothing aroma. In other words, it was a pleasant aroma to God and to the people. It was wholly consumed on the altar. It represented a complete restoration of relationship to God. 
 
There were offerings considered ‘free will offerings.’ In other words, they would bring these offerings simply because they wanted to; oftentimes out of gratitude. 
 
When they brought in the harvest of barley or wheat and wanted to recognize it was God’s hand that brought their great blessing, they could bring a grain offering. 
 
They could also bring a peace offering. The idea was not the bringing of a gift for the purpose of obtaining peace; like the husband who offends his wife and brings home flowers in the hope of smoothing things over. No, that’s not the idea. 
 
The worshiper would bring a peace offering as a way of showing gratitude. It was a peace offering for Thanksgiving. It was to be brought both with meat and with bread. Some of the bread was unleavened and some of the bread were cakes of leavened bread. Some of it offered on the altar as a soothing aroma to God, some of it eaten by the priests and the rest eaten by the worshiper, his family, and their friends. 
 
In Leviticus 22, God brings another reminder of the importance of the sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord. It was a vital part of their relationship to God, so He reminds them how paramount it is. 
 
It’s important for us as well. There is power in having a heart that is thankful; there is power in gratitude. It’s a theme that runs through the entire Bible because it’s such an important aspect of our relationship to God. When you’re thankful, it changes your perspective; it causes you to see life differently. It touches on the very meaning of life and the quality of living. 
 
We have an entire holiday dedicated to giving thanks. 
In November 1621, the pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered for a harvest celebration feast -- and to watch football. That last part has not been verified by historians, but rumor has it that the Redskins were playing the Chiefs. 
 
Today, when many people think of Thanksgiving, they think of turkey. What’s interesting is the Hebrew word for the turkey – Hodu - is the same word in Hebrew for giving thanks. 
 
God wanted the giving of thanks to Him to be an integral part of their relationship to Him. God had a unique relationship to Israel, distinct from all other nations. The distinction wasn’t just national; it was also to be personal. God wanted them to have a relationship to Him that included a heart that was thankful for all that God had done for each of them personally. 
 
Share the Grace with no Leftovers 
 
One of the differences between the Hebrew thanksgiving meal in Leviticus and ours was leftovers. Leftovers are a big part of Thanksgiving in our culture; some people eat turkey and cranberry sandwiches for a week. 
In contrast, the Jewish sacrifice of thanksgiving must be shared with others to the point that nothing was left over. Invite as many as necessary, share your offering of thanks; make sure everyone partakes to the full and nothing is left over. 
 
In other words, if you’re truly thankful, share your blessings with others. 
 
When I was in Bible college, I was a server at a high-class restaurant. One day, a small group came in, asked for the best table and ordered the most expensive things on the menu. One of them had sold his business and was so thankful he wanted to share with his friends. And of course, with me – what a great tip! So I stopped on the way home and bought some sparkling cider and treats to share with Jordi!

4. Tonight, as we continue our study of Matthew’s Gospel, we are going to discover what it means to have fruitful lives, the kind of lives that glorify God because they produce Fruit that Remains. 
 
Matthew 21:18-46 
 
Context 
1. Last week, we studied the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, one of the most significant events in human history. 
2. Remember the progression of what transpired after Jesus entered Jerusalem. 
a. He immediately entered the Temple and saw the corruption in His House, so He cleansed it. 
c. After cleansing the Temple, He healed the blind and the lame that came to Him. 
d. Then He received rightful worship from the children as they resumed singing Psalm 118, “Hosanna to the Son of David”. (15) 
3. Step back for a moment and realize how significant this day was for Israel and for us as well. 
a. God had called Israel to be His chosen people and placed His name on them as His people, on Jerusalem as the holy city of peace, and on the Temple, His house. 
b. God caused His glory to be among them that it might be a picture for all people that God desires to be “Emmanuel”, God with us. 
4. Here was Jesus, the Son of God, Healer of the blind, the deaf, the lame, Cleanser of lepers, Victor over demons, and the One who raised Lazarus form the dead; this should have been a day of triumph and great rejoicing, but it was day of confrontation instead. 
5. The chief priests and Pharisees confronted Jesus when they should have joined the crowds as they rejoiced at the arrival of their King. 
6. Their response to Jesus revealed the condition of their hearts and, as we will see, Jesus unveiled the problem with their hearts through His actions and words. 
7. God always does things for a reason, with a purpose, and there is divine purpose behind the many life lessons in this passage that we must pay careful attention to so that we may have lives that produce Fruit that Remains. 
 
I. God Expects More Than Just Fig Leaves (18-22) 
 
• The day after the Triumphal Entry, Jesus and the disciples returned to Jerusalem. 
• Jesus was hungry and saw a lone fig tree by the side of the road. 
• When He did not find any figs, Jesus cursed the tree and it immediately withered. 
• The disciples were shocked. They had witnessed many miracles by Jesus, always healing and restoring, even calming storms. 
• But here they witnessed judgment against a fig tree. Was Jesus grumpy because His blood sugar was too low? Not at all. 
• Again, God has a purpose for all that He does and through this event Jesus sent a message that is instructive for all. 
 
A. God expects good fruit 
1. There are several interesting facts about fig trees. 
a. Fig trees grow to be 20’ tall. 
b. They produce large leaves which are good for shade, though they are less effective when used as clothing, just ask Adam and Eve. 
c. Fig trees produce two crops per year. The first crop was eaten fresh. The second crop was dried and eaten during the winter months. 
d. But the next fact has important relevance for Matthew 21. Fig trees produce fruit before they grow leaves. So, if a fig tree has leaves, it should have fruit! 
 
2. Spiritually speaking, the fig tree has great significance because throughout the Scriptures God compares Israel to a fig tree. 
a. When Israel obeyed God because they were walking by faith, the fig tree was used as a picture of prosperity because God’s blessing was upon them.

We’ve all heard the expression, “famous last words,” but how many of us have ever studied Jesus last words? 
 
When I told a friend I was teaching a sermon on these verses they couldn’t believe I could do it with only three verses - - 
 
If you’ve ever had the opportunity to be with someone who’s life is about to pass, you know last words can be significant. 
 
I’ve been with those close to me and they shared with me that they are ready to meet the Lord, wishing they had more time with loved ones, asking for blessing over their wife and children. 
 
I’ve also been with those whose lives are full of despair and they finished their race without much hope or the belief that it’s just over - there isn’t anything else ahead. 
 
Our last words reveal a lot about our life. Are we filled with Hope & Assurance or Fear & Despair? 
 
When we look at our Lord Jesus’ last words we witness the completion of His greatest work on earth while also enduring His greatest work for eternity. 
 
What He knew from the Cross shows His deity - - what He said shows His humanity! 
• During His 6 hours on the Cross He spoke 3x over the first 3 hours - aimed at others. 
 
#1. Luke 23:34; “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” 
 
#2. Luke 23:43; “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.” 
 
#3. John 19:26; When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 
 
He knew that those last 3 hours of darkness on the cross that His Father would transfer the sin of the world onto Him. 
 
What was that scene like… 
• Darkness, Separation from God, Burning thirst 
 
Sounds like Hell - - yet Jesus took it for us so you might experience life. 
 
#4. Matthew 27:46; “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 
 
John 19:28-30 
 
I. WHAT JESUS SAID 
 
What was accomplished? 
• His mission on earth 
• John said in chapter 1; “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 
• His mission was to come to die and carry the sin of the world on Him. 
 
Matthew 20:28; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” 
 
A. I Am Thirsty 
 
Why was this significant for the writer, John, to record it? 
• Was it only to show His human side? 
• Human: a plot, unlawful, hateful yet carried out 
• Divine: God arranged it all - nothing by chance 
 
Acts 2:23; this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 
 
John wrote “so the scriptures could be fulfilled.” Remember, Jesus didn’t say this, but John wrote it. - - - WHY? 
 
So that everything in the OT could be fulfilled. 
 
Jesus may not have had a drink for some 18 hours; since the last supper… 
• He was in the Garden of Gethsemane where His sweat was described as blood.

Jesus was asked several times what is the greatest, the foremost of all that God has spoken? His answer comes right out of the Old Testament. “The greatest, the foremost of all that God has said,” Jesus replied, “is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” That comes right out of the book of Deuteronomy. 
 
 Jesus continued, “and the second is like it; you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” That comes right out of the verses we’re studying today in Leviticus 19. 
 
 “On these two commandments hang the entire Law and prophets.” In other words, the entire Old Testament can be summarized by those two statements. 
 
 The book of Leviticus is about worship, but it’s also about how to live as God’s people. It was He who rescued them from their oppression and slavery in Egypt. It was He who defeated their enemies, who gave them the land as their own possession, who promised that His presence would be with them. 
 
 In other words, because the Lord is their God, they should not live as those in Egypt from where they came or as those in Canaan where they are going. They should be different, they should be distinct, because the Lord is their God. 
 
 The same is true for you and me. God has redeemed you; He has called you His own son or daughter, He has given eternal life and every promise behind the name of Jesus. The Lord is your God and you should also live distinct, be different than the world. You’re in the kingdom of God now and He has given you the opportunity to have a relationship to the living God. Therefore, you should love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength; and you should love your neighbor as yourself. 
 
 These verses in Leviticus 19 tells you what it means to love your neighbor as yourself, but it also tells you why you should love your neighbor as yourself; because the Lord is your God; because you revere God. 
 
I. God’s People Care about Others 
 
 Because the Lord is your God, you should have God’s heart toward others. That’s not natural; everyone born on this earth is born self-focused and self-centered. 
 
 God cares; He’s concerned for those less fortunate, for the broken and hurting, and for the widows and orphans, and He wants you to have the same heart – – because the Lord is your God. 
 
A. Be generous to those in need 
 
 What a beautiful way to take care of those in need and those traveling through the land. The farmers were to leave the corners of the field and the gleanings for those in need to harvest. 
 The book of Ruth made this provision famous. When she and her mother-in-law Naomi came from Moab broken and poor, it was this provision that provided for them. They were poor and Ruth was a foreigner. 
 As she was gleaning, she was noticed by Boaz, their kinsman redeemer, and the rest is history. She became the great-grandmother of King David. 
 At the end of verse 10 He gives the reason to care for those in need, “I am the Lord your God.” In other words, because the Lord is your God, be generous to those in need. Have God’s heart toward others. 
 God will bless your harvest, God will bless your business, God will bless you when you have a heart to bless others. 
 
Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” 
 
Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure – pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.” 
 
B. Be true because God is the truth 
 Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man comes to the Father but by Me.” 
 In other words, truth is not just something to know or understand, it’s a quality of character. It’s something to live; it’s something to become. Truth is a person and His name is Jesus.

Have you ever experienced a disconnect where you thought you were connected, on the same page with someone, only to find out you were totally in the dark? 
2. The same thing can be true spiritually. God is talking but you are not hearing what He is saying. 
3. You think you’re connected, on the same page, only to discover you’ve been blind to the truth, walking in darkness the whole time. 
4. Tonight, in our study of Matthew’s Gospel, we will discover valuable lessons that God wants us to understand so that we may truly see because the eyes of our hearts have been opened. 
Matthew 20:29-34 
Context 
1. In Matthew 20, Jesus was traveling to Jerusalem. 
2. By going to Jerusalem, Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies and accomplished God’s plan for fallen humanity as Israel’s long-awaited Messiah. 
3. But would Israel recognize and receive her King? 
4. Israel was not in the dark when it came to Messiah’s person and work. 
5. The Old Testament prophets had declared not only the signs which would confirm His identity but also the exact timing of His entrance into Jerusalem according to Daniel 9:24-27. 
6. Why did God communicate His plan so precisely through the prophets and confirm it through so many miraculous signs? 
7. Because God did not want Israel left in the dark when it came to their Messiah. He wanted them to recognize Jesus as their Messiah because He alone is God’s answer for a broken and blind world. 
8. At this point, Jesus had already raised Lazarus from the dead, healed ten lepers, cast out demons, forgave a woman caught in adultery, healed the lame, opened the ears of the deaf, and confounded every religious leader who challenged Him. 
9. Israel had all they needed to see that their Messiah had come. They were not in the dark, yet they remained blind. 
 
I. God Wants to Open Our Eyes 
 
• God wants to heal our lives. 
• Now, physical blindness is one disability that many people deeply fear. They would rather lose their hearing or their ability to speak than lose their vision. 
• Why? Because there is something terribly fearful about being cast into darkness. 
 
A. We are all born into darkness 
1. There is a physical blindness and a spiritual blindness. Frankly, spiritual blindness is much more dangerous because it has eternal consequences. 
2. Remember the rich, young ruler who asked Jesus what he must do to receive eternal life? (19:16) 
3. Jesus tried to open his eyes when He told him to sell his possessions, give his money to the poor, and follow Him. (19:21) 
4. Jesus tried to show the young ruler the idolatry in his heart and the emptiness of his earthly possessions. 
5. Unfortunately, the young man refused to see that he valued his earthly treasures more than the treasures of heaven. 
 
APPL – There is something the Lord wants us to see here. 
• The long-awaited Messiah was offering light and life to the young ruler, but he refused. 
• Like him, there are many who refuse to see the Light of the world even though the evidence is right before their eyes. 
• Why? Because we are all born into darkness. 
• After Adam and Eve rebelled against God in the Garden of Eden, their descendants were born with a sin nature; born into spiritual darkness. 
 
Ephesians 5:8, … for you were formerly darkness…. 
 
• Therefore, all our ways are of the darkness. 
 
Proverbs 4:19, The way of the wicked is like darkness; 
they do not know over what they stumble. 
 
APPL – Why do people refuse the Light? 
 
John 3:19-20, This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

The book of Leviticus begins with instructions on how Israel was to worship God through offerings and sacrifices. God was giving them the land which He promised to their fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He promised His presence would go with them. He also gave them instructions about how they should live. 
 
He gave instructions for living for two reasons; first, that they might be a people distinct from all other people on the earth. In other words, God wanted it known that Israel belonged to Him, that He was their God and they were His people. Secondly, God gave them instructions that would help them to live well, to keep them from healthy; to keep them from diseases. 
 
God also gave instructions for how to have good and godly character. He wanted them to understand how to take care of one another. If they were to be God’s people, then they must have God’s heart. 
 
Illus – We can see good sense when God told them not to eat bats or rats or snakes or spiders. But we also see God’s heart when He told them not to harvest the corners of their fields, to leave that for those who were in need. 
 
Is there an aspect of that for Christians? The answer is yes, Christians should be distinct from the world. You’re in the kingdom of God now and there’s a different set of principles that apply. The reason? Because the Lord is your God and He has called you out of the kingdom of darkness to live in the light. His desire is to bless you. By these principles you will have life and life to the full. 
 
I. I’m My Beloved’s and He is Mine 
 
 Those are the words of a song we used to sing in church when I was young, but it communicates the point of what God is saying in verse 2. 
 
 In just these five verses He says, “I am the Lord your God” three times. 
 
 Because they belong to God and God belonged to them, that should determine how they lived their lives, “Because I am the Lord your God.” 
 
 The same is true for us… 
 
1 Peter 2:9, You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 
 
 There is good reason to consider that you belong to God and that you owe Him your heart and your allegiance – 
 
A. God gave you life 
 You are breathing His air and living on His planet… 
 
Psalm 24:1, The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it. 
 
Deuteronomy 10:14, Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it. 
 If life itself is the result of random chance, then you could certainly do whatever you wished without any concern whatsoever. 
 But the evidence for God’s fingerprint is everywhere around us, so that man is without excuse. 
 In fact, the more we know, the more we can see the evidence for the amazing intelligence of God. 
Romans 1:20, For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 
Illus – If you walk on the beach and see ripples in the sand, you could conclude it was a pattern of randomness. But if there on the sand you were to see a big heart with the words, “Rich loves Jordi,” you would conclude “this is not random; there is great intelligence behind such a clever design.” 
Illus – The DNA of the human body is an amazing declaration of the greatness of our Creator. There are 3 billion base pairs in each cell fitting into a space just 6 microns across. If you stretched the DNA in one cell all the way out it would measure more than 6 feet in length. The DNA is encoded with a four-character chemical language which is the most efficient information storage system in the universe! Just one strand of human DNA contains 725 MB of information.

As you know Pastor Rich and I were recently in Africa. One of the most impactful truths I came away with was the genuine response to daily suffering… 
 
Pastor Rich mentioned in his sermon upon our return that our Pastors and their families have learned how to suffer well. 
 
Following the many teachings we shared, a time was given for questions - - often that period of time lasted longer than the teachings themselves. 
 
The only question all week about questioning God came from one of the wives who asked about the end times… 
 
Of course there is no answer this side of Heaven to that question. 
 
More strikingly though was the lack of questions about 
 
• Why does God do this or that 
• I think God should have done this or that 
• Why does God allow us to suffer 
• Why does He allow evil in this world 
 
We heard none of that 
 
So as I thought through this experience and the impression it made on me, I landed in Isaiah… 
 
• In America we hear questions all the time like, Why does God allow tragedy? 
• What about injustices in the world? 
 
You may be going through various difficulties and thinking, “What is happening - - Why is God doing this?” 
 
• We tend to interpret life by how it’s going at each moment, by how it looks to us right now. 
• If it’s uncomfortable, if it’s a little difficult, then we sometimes falsely conclude that God’s thoughts toward us aren’t good or that He isn’t thinking of us at all. 
 
God’s perspective is not our own is it? 
 
And that’s what we want to talk about tonight. How to have a victorious mind! 
 
A little context for our text - 
• God is calling Israel to revival through the Prophet Isaiah. 
• The people are pursuing worldly things and God is calling them back to Himself. 
• Rather than spend their hard earned wages on worldly things, He calls them to eat what is good - picture a banquet feast hosted by God Himself. 
Illustration - The Prodigal Son 
 
A very important biblical lesson in all of this; In order for us to be spiritually victorious, we have to be spiritually satisfied - our souls need to be full, or we become hungry or thirsty for the world. 
 
He’s calling us back to Himself - to be revived - to be in greater fellowship with Him. 
 
When you visit places of poverty like Pastor Rich and I did and serve Believers, you quickly realize they lack for the things of this world which allows them to have a deeper relationship with God. 
 
We are so blessed in this country and we are blessed to share what we have with others who have very little. 
 
God uses our abundance to minister the most basic needs to others. But with that comes worldly temptations others may not experience. 
 
Matthew 19:24; Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 
 
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, 
Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. 
 
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, 
So are My ways higher than your ways 
And My thoughts than your thoughts. 
 
Lord, why did you give me such a short text to share? And of course, the answer lies within the text itself! 
 
I. “FOR MY THOUGHTS ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS” 
 
A. God does not always do what we think He should 
 
Romans 12:2; And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. 
 
He’s calling us to have the mind of Christ - to filter our decisions, our circumstances, our conduct, our marriage relationships, our relationships outside of marriage, our work ethic…through His Word, through prayer, through Godly counsel… 
 
• Sometimes we think, “If the Lord would only save my friend or family member? 
• Or, “why does it seem like God allows the ungodly to prosper?” 
• In Africa I undoubtedly asked Him, “They are such beautiful saints; why must they suffer so much?”

The book of Leviticus is a book of worship. It describes the relationship that is possible between God and man. It deals with life and death. It shows that the way to life is through death; it is by the shedding of blood, the giving of life that sins are forgiven, that sinners are made righteous and given eternal life as well as spiritual life – and life to the full. 
 
 God provided a way for sinners to have relationship to a holy God. That is man’s greatest problem; man is sinful - God is holy. Therefore, God gave Israel provisions not only for the offerings of worship, but also sacrifices and offerings for sin and guilt; to make atonement for their sin; that their sin might be forgiven. 
 
 All of Leviticus contains sermon after sermon pointing the way to Jesus. You will find Jesus in the burnt offering, the peace offering, grain offering, the thanksgiving offering, and of course the sin and guilt offering. 
 
 His blood is the scarlet thread woven throughout the word of God from Genesis to Revelation. 
 
 Last week we saw Jesus in the greatest day on the Jewish calendar; Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It is on this day, and this day alone, the high priest could enter the holiest of holy places in the temple; the place where the mercy seat, covered with the golden seraphim, rested upon the ark of the covenant. It was an image of the very throne room of God in heaven. 
 
 In that holiest of holy places in the temple, where the very presence of God dwelt, the high priest would enter, once a year. He would bring a fire pan of coals from the altar into the holiest place and pour two handfuls of sweet incense on the fire – a picture of the prayers of the saints before God. He would then sprinkle the blood of the bull for a sin offering for himself upon the mercy seat and then the blood of a goat as a sin offering for the people. 
 
 It’s all a picture of the fact that because of the blood of Jesus that was offered in the throne room of God in heaven itself, we now, with our sins forgiven, can draw near, with confidence, to the God of heaven. But there’s more… 
 
 The high priest would then lay his hands on the head of a second goat and confess the sins of all the people. That goat would then be led into the wilderness, bearing their iniquities, never to return. 
 
 That second goat is quite mysterious. The meaning in Hebrew is not obvious and even some Jewish scholars have been confused as to its meaning. The word in Hebrew is azazel – ‘azaz’ means strength, and ‘el’ means God. 
 
 Read those verses in Leviticus 16:8-9 again but use the Hebrew Azazel instead of the word scapegoat. “One lot fell for Jehovah and the other lot fell for Azazel.” Some Jewish scholars thought Azazel was a fallen angel, a demon of the desert to whom was sent the second goat. To which I say, be careful; Satan must have no part in your relationship to God. If you are in the kingdom of God, then have no part in the kingdom of darkness. “Choose you this day whom you will serve.” 
 
 And that brings us to Leviticus 17 where God makes clear to the children of Israel that they must bring their sacrifices to the Lord at the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, as sacrifices of peace offerings to Jehovah. And they shall no longer sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat demons in the wilderness as they had done before. “You’re in the kingdom of God now,” God was saying. 
I. Choose You This Day Whom You Will Serve 
 
 Israel had lived in Egypt 400 years and had become accustomed to numerous gods. No more, God was saying, serve God and God alone. No longer should they sacrifice to the goat demons “with which they played the harlot.” 
 
 Israel wanted both; they wanted Jehovah, but they didn’t want to let go of the gods they served when they were in Egypt. 
 
 The same is true today. Many want God on their terms; they don’t want to let go of what the world has to offer.
