1. The way of Jesus does not make sense to the world, it’s foolishness. 
2. For those who have confessed their sin and placed their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, the way of Jesus makes perfect sense, it’s the power and grace of God. 
3. Yet as Christians, we all experience the pull of the world to fall back in line with the way of the world. 
a. To value what the world values. 
b. To pursue what the world pursues: the fame, the power, all for personal gain; to be first. 
4. Tonight, in our study of Matthew’s Gospel, we will come face to face with what it means to be first in the world, but last in God’s kingdom; to be last in the world, yet first in God’s eyes. 
5. First or last. That’s the question. 
 
Matthew 20:1-28 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 19:16, we are introduced to a rich young man who asked Jesus what he needed to do to “obtain eternal life”. 
2. Jesus told him exactly what he needed to become His disciple; sell his possessions, give the money to the poor, and follow Jesus. Why did Jesus say that? 
3. Jesus told him to do those things in order to reveal what was preventing him from entering into the fullness of life that God wanted for him. 
4. Unfortunately, the young man walked away, grieved in his heart, because he owned much property, or perhaps I should say, his property owned him. 
5. As he walked away, Jesus explained to His disciples how difficult it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven, that “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle”. (19:24) 
6. In essence, Jesus said it is only when we recognize our spiritual poverty, that we are spiritually bankrupt and cannot save ourselves; that we can enter into the kingdom of heaven. 
6. The disciples were amazed and asked, “Then who can be saved?” (25) 
7. Jesus replied, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible”. (26) 
8. Peter then responded, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?” (27) 
9. Jesus declared, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, shall receive many times as much, and shall inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last; and the last first.” (28-30) 
10. Jesus then gave the parable that we are studying today. 
This parable teaches us about God’s heart and His heart toward those who enter into the kingdom of heaven. 
11. It also gives us an opportunity to look at our own hearts and to understand the way God wants us to live, the heart He wants us to have, the character He desires to pour into us, and the transformation that comes from being more like Jesus. 
 
I. The Lord of the Vineyard is Generous 
 
• In Matthew 20, Jesus used a parable to explain eternal life along with the blessing and rewards in the kingdom of heaven. 
• The parable is about a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 
• It was common in that day for those who needed work to gather at some designated location to wait for a landowner to come by and hire them. 
• The landowner would have hired the first men around 6 a.m. with the agreed upon wage of a denarius for a day’s work. He went out again at the third, sixth, ninth, and eleventh hours to hire more laborers. 
• At the end of the day, which would have been around 6 p.m., the landowner instructed the foreman to pay the workers beginning with the last group. Each group was given a denarius. 
• Those who were hired first were offended and they grumbled because they expected more.

There is a scarlet thread that runs through the entire bible starting in Genesis and culminating in the victory of Revelation. That scarlet thread points entirely to Jesus when he shed His blood on the cross at Calvary. In other words, that scarlet thread is the blood of Christ. 
 
 God has one plan for humanity and one plan only and he weaves that plan of salvation into the fabric of Scripture. “There is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved,” Acts 4:12. 
 
Leviticus 16 brings us to the most holy event for the Jewish people. It is Yom Kippur; the day of atonement. On this day the high priest made atonement for himself and for the people of Israel. On this day and this day alone, the high priest entered the most holy place in the tabernacle. 
 
The mercy seat which covered the ark of the covenant was there. The very presence of the living God dwelt there in the holy of holies. No man could enter; no one could draw near to the presence of God in that place; only the high priest could come, once a year, carrying the blood of the sacrifice. 
 
Part of that sacrifice included a goat, actually there were two goats. One would die, giving his life as payment for the sins of Israel. The other would live. The high priest would lay his hands on the head of the goat and confess all the sins of the people. Someone would then lead that goat, carrying the sins of the people out to the wilderness where it would be set free; never to return. 
 
“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12 
 
 Many of the sacrifices and offerings had to do with blood. It’s one of the most important themes of the Bible; it’s the scarlet thread that runs from Genesis to Revelation. 
 
 The Jews were also restricted from eating blood. Life is in the blood and all life belongs to God. How precious is blood if it is the stream of life! 
 
 But the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins. It’s all a picture of the blood of Christ. Words cannot convey the preciousness of that blood! He is the Son of the living God, He was the Word made flesh, He was the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. 
 
 It’s by the precious blood of Jesus that sinners are reconciled to the living God. By that blood you are made right with God. And being made right with God is the foundation of everything else being made right in your life. 
 
I. Everyone Needs the Blood of Christ 
 
 Verse 6 - Aaron first had to offer a bull as a sin offering for himself. He was the high priest. If the high priest needs the blood of Christ, then everyone does. 
 
 There are no exceptions; whether it be Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham, or anyone else, everyone needs the blood of Christ. 
 
 In other words, you come to God through the blood of His Son, or you don’t come at all. 
 
A. His blood has power to save 
 
 The precious blood of Christ has the power to save; to save from what? To save you from the condemnation of the Law. 
 
 The requirements of the law are the standards of righteousness and everyone falls short. Everyone. Moses, the high priest, you, me, everyone. There is none righteous, no, not one. 
 
Galatians 3:10, “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them.” 
 The law created constant fear and dread of failure. 
CS Spurgeon: The life of a Hebrew, happy as it was compared with that of a heathen, was perfect drudgery compared to yours and mine. He was hemmed in with a thousand commands and prohibitions. He was always in danger of making himself unclean. 
 A thousand sins of ignorance were like so many hidden pits in his way; he must be perpetually in fear lest he should be cut off from the people of God.

Have you ever noticed that people can get caught up in the strangest things and somehow think it’s “Christian” or that they’re “having church”? 
2. Why do I ask such a question? Because I believe there’s longing in our hearts for what’s authentic. But what does “authentic” look like? 
3. The standard for Christian faith and practice is and must be the Bible. So, what does the Bible say about having an authentic relationship with God? 
4. Tonight, we’re going to look at a person who had an authentic relationship with God. The writer of Hebrews said this man was one “of whom the world was not worthy”. (Hebrews 11:38) 
5. As we look at his life, I believe we will discover principles for what it means to truly walk closer with God. 
 
Genesis 5:21-24 
 
Context 
1. When it comes to genealogies, many just skip to the next chapter. Yet, biblical genealogies are filled with wonderful treasures just waiting to be discovered. 
2. For instance, in verse 1 we are taken back to the first two chapters in Genesis, when God created Adam and Eve. 
3. Then in verse 3, Adam’s son, Seth, is described as being made in the “image” or “likeness” of Adam. 
4. But it’s not until we read fifth verse that we realize the innocence of Genesis 1 and 2 is gone, for in that verse we are reminded of Adam’s fall when we see the words “Adam died” at the age of 930. 
5. Why did the Bible record Adam’s death? Because God always keeps His Word. 
a. God judged the first couple for eating the forbidden fruit which resulted in Adam’s death; a judgment that all of creation still endures. 
b. Yet there is hope for God promised a Rescuer who would defeat sin, death, and Satan in Genesis 3:15. 
6. In Genesis 5, there is a clear the pattern of life followed by death which is unbroken until we read verse 21. Here we are told of a man who lived and did not die because “he walked with God”. His name was Enoch. 
 
I. Do Life with God 
 
A. Doing life with God is a choice 
1. Enoch lived in dark, corrupt times. 
a. God was forgotten. 
b. Life was not valued so murder and immorality were the norm. 
c. The world had a one-track mind; to satisfy self and gratify one’s ego at any cost. 
d. It was a world that was willfully rushing towards judgment. 
 
 
Genesis 6:5-6, Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 
 
2. But it appears that something changed for Enoch 
 around the time of his son’s birth. 
a. For the first 65 years of life, Enoch just walked. 
 
APPL – Many people live their lives this way. They get up, fight through day, and then go to bed. Repeat. 
 
b. After his son’s birth, Enoch “walked with God”. 
3. Something had stirred within Enoch. 
a. Maybe it was holding his son for the first time and realizing he was raising a son in a wicked world. He wanted to give him more than what the world had to offer. 
b. Maybe it was talking with Adam, who would have been 687 years old at Methuselah’s birth. 
c. But I believe the name of Enoch’s son provides a clue about the change in Enoch. 
• “Methuselah” has been taken to mean one of two things. 
• The first meaning is, “When he is dead it shall be sent”. 
• The second meaning is, “Man of the dart” or “spear, javelin, arrow”. 
• Both appear to relate to a coming judgment. 
• Methuselah lived 969 years, longer than any other person mentioned in the Bible. 
• When one calculates the year of his death, it matches the year when Noah’s flood began. “When he is dead it shall be sent.” 
• A dart or arrow was used as an instrument of death or judgment. 
o Remember, after the flood God promised Noah that He would never flood the earth again. 
o God gave Noah a sign, the rainbow which signified the bow and arrow were pointed away from the earth; a symbol of peace between God and man.

We come now to the section in Leviticus called, “The law of the leper.” It describes what the priests should do in case a leper was healed from his leprosy. It was a ceremonial cleansing for the leper if a leper was ever healed of his leprosy. 
 
The amazing thing about all this is that leprosy was incurable. In other words, these provisions for the ceremonial cleansing of a leper were never done. Well, they were never done by any priest until Jesus, the Son of the Living God came from heaven and began to heal lepers. 
 
Leprosy was greatly feared in all cultures and civilizations during that time. It was incurable throughout history until recently. Today there are less than 100 cases reported in the US each year. 
 
 In 1873 a Norwegian doctor named Hansen discovered that leprosy was caused by a bacterium. It is therefore sometimes referred to as Hansen’s disease today. Leprosy bacterium is exceptionally resistant to antibiotics. In fact by the 1960s, the world’s only known anti-leprosy drug became virtually useless. Only by utilizing a powerful multi-drug antibiotic therapy can leprosy be effectively treated even today; and that treatment may take 2-3 years to complete. 
 
 It’s amazing that God would give a provision for the ceremonial cleansing of a leper when leprosy was incurable. In the entire Old Testament there is only one known case of a leper being healed, and he wasn’t a Hebrew, so this scripture would not have been applied. Both Moses and his sister Miriam experienced momentary leprosy, but they were instantly healed and not considered lepers. 
 
 Leprosy represents sin in the scriptures. There are many similarities, starting with the fact that sin is incurable. In the days of Moses, the only known cure for leprosy was a miracle. The same is true for sin; the only known cure is a miracle. 
 
 Let me say that again, the only known cure for sin is a miracle. The only way a sinner can be healed of his sin is by the miraculous intervention of God. And every time a sinner is forgiven and reconciled to the Living God, it is a miracle of God’s doing. 
 
The priestly ceremony for the leper healed of his leprosy is clearly a picture of Jesus Christ. The symbols are nothing short of amazing. The only known cure for sin is when the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross is applied to your life. 
 
As you will see from these verses, He doesn’t just heal incurable sin; He makes you free as a bird. 
 
I. Begin with an Honest Diagnosis 
 
 Can you imagine suffering an ailment and the doctor glosses over the truth because he doesn’t want to hurt your feelings? 
 
 No, when it comes to your health, you want the truth so you can deal with it straightforwardly. I suggest that when it comes to your eternal soul, you would also want the straightforward truth. 
 
 Jesus said, “If you abide in my word you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 
 
 In other words, the first step in being set free is knowing the truth. You need an honest diagnosis. 
 
 Here’s the truth - sin is a debilitating disease that will destroy your life -- and it’s incurable. 
 
 Once you know the truth you can deal with it straightforwardly. 
 
A. Leprosy and sin begin insignificantly 
 
 Leviticus 13:2 describes how leprosy begins with a spot that appears minor and insignificant. It is painless. But it gradually increases. Deep in the body something frightful was at work; the leprosy would utterly consume the victim. 
Leviticus 13:2, When a man has on the skin of his body a swelling or a scab or a bright spot, and it becomes an infection of leprosy on the skin of his body, then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons, the priests. 
 Each of these symptoms is a picture of the beginning of the appearance of sin. 
 For example, there’s the swelling of the flesh; it’s a picture of the pride of life. 
Scrip – Pride puffs up, but loves builds up.

We come now to the section in Leviticus called, “The law of the leper.” It describes what the priests should do in case a leper was healed from his leprosy. It was a ceremonial cleansing for the leper if a leper was ever healed of his leprosy.

The amazing thing about all this is that leprosy was incurable. In other words, these provisions for the ceremonial cleansing of a leper were never done. Well, they were never done by any priest until Jesus, the Son of the Living God came from heaven and began to heal lepers.

Leprosy was greatly feared in all cultures and civilizations during that time.  It was incurable throughout history until recently. Today there are less than 100 cases reported in the US each year.

What would we surrender to succeed? 
- Would you work overtime? 
- Would you give up time with your kids to put your best foot forward? 
- Would you push yourself to burn out in hope to bring home enough? 
 
Could it be that what you are building is something God never wanted? 
Could it be that the reason you so exhausted is because you striving for something that is truly like chasing the wind? 
 
Ecclesiastes 1:14 
 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 
 
Story Conclusion- I don’t even know where that varsity jacket is! 
 
I. Our confidence and security need to be in Christ alone! 
Paul tells us to rejoice but be ready for the haters (V 1-3) 
- Everywhere Paul went he had haters who wanted to falsely accuse him 
- This group of jewish “christians” sought to restore the law into the church and said that everyone needed to be circumcised. 
- Paul has been teaching about spiritual transformation. 
- Paul is drawing the line here about the source of true discipleship. 
 
A. We need not live for the approval of man 
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ. Galatians 1:10 
 
“If you live for people’s acceptance, you’ll die by their rejection.”

Paul gives us his resume (V 4-6) 
- Paul was a first round draft pick Jew. 
- Paul had a lot going for him before Jesus met with him on his way to Damascus.

B. Paul puts no confidence in his own ability anymore. 
- His perspective has shifted from thinking he could be righteous on his own to knowing that his true righteousness and life is found only in Christ 
- He considers his accolades and past and in light of Christ they appear to him as useful as “garbage,” “dung,” or the more famous term “poopie.” 
- That is some seriously strong language to be referring to his life’s work pre encountering Jesus. 
 
What kind of argument would you make for your personal righteousness before God? Can you imagine the conversation? 
 
Paul thought he was chasing the dream but realized instead he was chasing the wind! 
- We sacrifice so much in our lives towards temporary goals. 
- We need to carry the same attitude of Paul in our faith. 
- Confidence based on anything worldly is going to appear for what it is in sight of Jesus. 
 
Isaiah 64:6 - All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

In so many ways, life can feel like purchasing a product from an infomercial. 
2. You take the plunge thinking it will be different this time because this time it’s going to work! It’s worth the money… only to get burned. 
3. You feel played. You vow to never fall for that again until you see the next infomercial! 
4. It’s easy to feel jaded by life. 
5. Who should we trust? What does real trust look like? 
6. Today, we are going to look at two verses from Proverbs 3 which will answer these fundamental questions. 
 
Context 
1. Proverbs 3:1-12 is a wonderful passage filled with wisdom, principles, and promises for living a godly life. 
2. Proverbs 3:5-6 are the foundation for the entire passage. Everything hinges upon the nuggets of wisdom found here. 
 
Transition – In these two verses, we discover “Who” to trust, “How” to trust, and the “Promise” given to those who apply these words of wisdom. First question, “Who to trust?” 
 
I. Trust the Lord 
 
A. With all of your heart 
1. There are different levels of trust. 
a. Level 1 - “I trust you as far as I can throw you!” 
b. Level 2 - “Flipping the Switch” 
c. Level 3 - “The Stretch” 
d. Level 4 – “At Rest” 
2. The word for trust means “to lay helpless, facedown, at the mercy of another”. 
a. It’s like a soldier before a victorious general 
b. Or a servant waiting for a master’s command 
3. In Proverbs 3:5, trust is a picture of… 
a. Allegiance and Submission 
b. Confidence and Conviction 
c. Expectation and Hope 
d. Faith and Reliance 
4. In Proverbs 3:5, trust is a wholehearted commitment. 
a. Trust is a choice. 
b. “All your heart” means with “one’s mind, emotions, and will”. 
 
APPL – This level of trust declares, “I will trust the Lord…” 
•To meet all of my needs 
 
Philippians 4:19, And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 
 
• 
When I’m afraid of life’s battles 
Psalm 56:3-4, When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. 
In God, whose word I praise, in God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me? 
 
•When I’m afflicted, overwhelmed, or persecuted 
 
2 Corinthians 4:7-9, But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. 
 
• When my health is failing 
 
Psalms 73:25-26, Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. 
 
ILLUS – My grandma’s example before she passed away 
 
c. God wants our whole heart because anything less is half-hearted. Half-hearted devotion leaves the door opens for folly. 
 
B. Don’t lean on unreliable substitutes 
 
1. This includes “leaning” on your own “understanding”. 
a. The word for lean is like the word trust. 
b. Lean means to “rely on someone or something for help or protection.” 
c. Understanding refers to human understanding which operates in ignorance because it lacks God’s counsel. 
d. Therefore, “to lean on your own understanding” is to be “wise in your own eyes”. 
e. Scripture clearly warns against being a “wise guy”. 
 
Proverbs 3:7, Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil. 
 
Proverbs 14:12, There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. 
 
 2. What are the signs of being a “wise guy”? 
a. Pride and haughtiness 
b. Unteachable heart 
 
Proverbs 16:18, Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling. 
 
3. Why is humility so important? 
a. Because we have no reason to boast. 
 
1 Corinthians 4:7, For who regards you as superior? And what do you have that you did not receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

1. The opposite is also true; that there is a way which may seem “wrong” to a person, but its end is the way of life. 
2. Tonight, we will look at both ways as we study the exchange between Jesus and a rich, young ruler. 
3. Through their time of “question and answer”, we will also discover God’s heart for us, that we choose the right way so that we may Enter into Life. 
 
Matthew 19:13-30 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 19 were told that after Jesus shared about God’s original design for marriage between a man and a woman, some parents brought their children to Jesus “so that He might lay His hands on them and pray” over them. (13) 
2. Unfortunately, the disciples had forgotten Jesus’ earlier teachings about children, that He loves and values them. (Matthew 18:2-6) 
3. They thought the parents were wasting Jesus’ time, so they rebuked the parents and told them to go away. 
4. Jesus responded with a rebuke of His own. He rebuked His disciples and reaffirmed His love for children when He said, “Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (14) 
5. Jesus stayed there, as long as needed, until the last child was prayed over and blessed, and then He departed. 
6. Then, right after Jesus reaffirmed His love for the children and taught that having a child-like heart was required for entrance into the kingdom of heaven, Matthew introduces us to a rich, young ruler. Why? 
7. Because God wants us to understand how to leave the way that leads to death and enter the way that leads to life. 
 
I. The World’s Treasure Maps are All Wrong 
 
Calvin Miller once said in his book, The Finale, “The world is poor because her fortune is buried in heaven, but all her treasure maps are of the earth…” 
 
A. To have “it all” is not enough 
1. From the world’s standpoint, this guy “had it all”! 
a. He was rich, and we know that, according to the world, money equals fulfillment and happiness. 
b. He was young, and we know how our world, especially today, worships at the “fountain of youth”. 
c. He was powerful, and we know our world craves power, for when you have power, you have control and can get “your way”. 
d. For all we know this fellow was handsome as well, or at least there were no doubt plenty of young women who would want to convince him that it was so. 
3. From outward appearances, this rich, young ruler had it all, yet, he felt compelled to come to Jesus because he sensed something wasn’t right. 
4. Something was missing; something he feared he desperately needed. 
5. There was a void in his life and that void caused him to wonder about what would become of him after he died; what was his eternal destiny. 
 
APPL – I am convinced we’re told about this rich, young ruler because many people can relate to his dilemma. 
• But you might be thinking, “I am not young anymore” or “I am definitely not rich” or “I’m not much of a ruler of anything”! 
• That’s not what I am talking about… 
 
ILLUS – For some perspective, our country is in the top 5% of the world’s wealth. 
 
• He had all these things, yet he was empty, restless, and lacked peace. 
 
APPL – By the way, it’s not that God has anything against wealth itself. There were many famous people in the Bible that God loved and honored who were wealthy. 
• Abraham was wealthy and so was his son, Isaac. 
• Solomon was one of the wealthiest men in the world. 
• Joseph of Arimathea, who buried Jesus in his own tomb, was certainly wealthy. 
• So, wealth, itself, is not the issue. 
Luke 12:15, Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions. 
 
B. Doing “good things” is not enough 
1. According to Luke 18:18, he called Jesus, “Good Teacher” and asked, “… what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?”

Matthew 19:1-12 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 19 were told that Jesus left the Sea of Galilee and headed south to Judea, east of the Jordan River. 
2. Huge crowds followed Him, and Jesus healed all who came to Him. 
3. While there, some Pharisees sought to test Him. They challenged Jesus to enter a raging debate that divided the religious leaders as well as the nation of Israel. Their question involved the topic of divorce. 
4. Basically, there were two leading rabbis, Shammai and Hillel, who held opposing views on divorce. 
5. The debate centered on the proper interpretation of Deuteronomy 24:1-4 where Moses gave instruction about divorce. 
 
Deuteronomy 24:1-4, When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house, and she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man’s wife, and if the latter husband turns against her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her to be his wife, then her former husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again to be his wife, since she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the Lord, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance. 
 
6. The battle lines were drawn around the interpretation and application of the word indecency, also translated uncleanness. 
7. Rabbi Shammai taught that divorce was permissible only in the event of adultery. 
8. Rabbi Hillel held a very liberal view and taught that a man was permitted to divorce his wife for any reason at all. In other words, if a man’s wife made his coffee too strong, or burnt his toast, or didn’t please him the way he wanted to be pleased, it was grounds for divorce. 
9. So, the Pharisees presented the debate to Jesus, hoping He would alienate Himself by taking one side. 
a. If Jesus chose the extremely liberal interpretation, He would be accused of not taking God’s Word seriously. 
b. If Jesus chose the conservative view, He risked losing His popularity with the people. 
10. But Jesus did not take the bait. Instead of talking about divorce, He talked about God’s original purpose for marriage. 
 
I. The Two Shall Become One 
 
• Notice how Jesus literally brought the Pharisees back to the beginning when He quoted from Genesis, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, and said, ‘FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH’?” (4-5) 
• The idea of one flesh clearly suggests the beauty of sexual intimacy between a man and a woman in the context of holy matrimony. 
• But the Bible makes it clear that there is more to oneness, such as the oneness of soul and spirit. 
• That’s why the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth to not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. (2 Corinthians 6:14) 
• According to the Bible, there are four purposes for marriage: 
o Continuation of the human race – “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28). 
o Companionship and enjoyment – “It is not good for the man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). 
o Protection against sexual immorality – “Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body” (1 Corinthians 6:18).

Leviticus is named after the tribe of Levi. They were given the honor of being priests in Israel, representing the people to God and God to the people. There are several possible reasons why the tribe of Levi was given such honor, but the most likely is because of what happened in Exodus 32. 
 
 Moses had been on the mountain for 40 days and the people did not know what had become of him, so they came to Aaron and said, “Make us a god who will go before us, as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” 
 
 You remember the story. Aaron told them to bring the gold from their earrings and such and he fashioned a golden calf and then they ate and drank and got up to play. In other words, it turned into a party. When Moses came down on the mountain and saw what Israel had done, he became angry and threw down the tablets on which God had written the Law. He then said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me now.” And it says, “All the sons of Levi gathered together to him.” It was a powerful moment and a challenge to all of us. 
 
 The book of Leviticus is a manual to guide the priests of Israel and the people of Israel on how to worship God in the temple. The instructions are clear and exact. All the offerings and sacrifices are important because they all point to Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 
 
 Chapters 1 through 9 give the instructions for worship in detail. Then, at the end of chapter 9 comes the great inauguration of the offerings and the bringing of the sacrifices. 
 
When they came out and blessed the people, the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces. What a beautiful and glorious moment! 
 
But immediately they run into trouble because the sons of Aaron do not bring the offering God instructed them to bring. Instead of bringing fire from the altar; the fire that came from God Himself, they brought “strange fire.” They brought their own fire rather than God’s fire. Instead of God’s fire, God’s way, they brought their fire, their way. 
 
What great lessons there are for us in these verses. 
 
I. Don’t Bring Strange Fire to God 
 
 Let’s start with some basic facts of the case. 
 
 God gave clear instructions; they were to bring fire from the altar, the place where the lamb was slain and offered to God in their place. 
 
 They laid their hands on the head of the animal and the animal became the substitute for them and for the sons of Israel. The animal died in their place. The lamb was then laid on the altar where the fire which God provided consumed it. 
 
 Instead of bringing fire from the altar, they brought their own fire and God rejected it and rejected them. 
 
 God is setting a standard – They must do it the way God said it; He won’t receive strange fire and He won’t receive them! 
 
 The point for you and me…You don’t get to do whatever you want to do however you want to do it. 
 
A. God’s fire; God’s way 
 
 From the beginning of creation God has had a plan to reconcile sinners to Himself. His Son, His only begotten Son, would die in your place. Your sins would be removed from you and placed on His Son. It’s as though you laid your hands on His head and your sins were transferred to Jesus on the cross; the cross on which He paid for them in full. 
 
 Based on His blood shed on the cross which God accepted in your behalf, you yourself are accepted by God and are given the right to be called a child of God with full rights of citizenship in heaven. 
 
 That’s God’s plan, that’s God’s way and there is no other way. 
 
John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” 
 
Acts 4:12, “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

There have been some remarkable feats of courage, determination, and sheer grit that have stood out in the annals of sports history. The 2016 World Series was one of the most remarkable as the Chicago Cubs came back from a 3-1 deficit to win Game 7 in extra innings. 
That same year the Cleveland Cavaliers came back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Championship, the first in NBA history. And let’s not forget 2019, the year Tiger Woods won the Masters for the 5th time, overcoming personal and physical challenges; one of the greatest comebacks in sports history. 
There are many Hall of Fame greats such as Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Dizzy Dean, and Lou Gehrig; men who were considered the greatest in their sport. 
But all of these have one thing in common, it’s just sports. The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 accomplished great feats also, but the significance of what they accomplished is eternal. They were men and women that influenced the world around them because of their faith. They didn’t just believe; their faith became the driving force of their life. They relied on God in what they accomplished. 
They were ordinary people like you and me. They were not perfect, that’s for sure, but they believed God and it made all the difference in their lives and in the world around them. 
It’s interesting that though each of these people were common, ordinary sinners like you and me, there is no mention of their sin or their failures in this chapter. God gave them a second chance and what He celebrates, what He highlights, is the victory of their faith. 
It should remind us of Hebrews 10:17, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” The good news is that your story isn’t over either. If there are sins and failures in your life, you can get up and continue in faith and finish well and God will highlight and celebrate your victory in faith as well; and your sin and lawless deeds He will remember no more. 
People who are strong in faith are also people of influence. Instead of being drawn backward by the people around them, they grow stronger in their faith. They lead by example and they lead by their influence. They make a difference. 
That’s a great lesson. These heroes of faith inspire us to step up and be men of women of faith as well. These verses show us what living by faith looks like. 
I. These are the Days of Noah 
 The name Noah means ‘rest.’ His parents gave him that name saying, “This one shall give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands…” 
 Noah is not a picture of Jesus; he is a picture of those who put their trust in Jesus. He is a picture of those who ‘rest’ in the work of salvation God accomplished for them through the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son. 
 Noah’s Ark, however, is a symbol of Jesus Christ; He is a refuge from the gathering storm that will culminate in the judgment of the world. 
 Jesus is the Ark which saves. Only those who enter the ark will be saved. “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man comes to the Father but by Me,” Jesus said. 
A. God warns in advance 
 Verse 7 – By faith, Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen… became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. 
 God warned Noah in advance that judgment was coming upon the earth because the wickedness of man was great and every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 
 Jesus gave a similar warning in Matthew 24 -- that this will be a sign of the latter days; it will be like the days of Noah… 
Matthew 24:12, 37, “And because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold… For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah…” 
Acts 17:30-31, “God is now declaring that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Jesus from the dead.” 
 Noah was warned by God about things not yet seen… up to that point it had never rained.

 One of the greatest promises found in the Bible is when God said to Moses and the people of Israel in Exodus 33, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” This meant so much to Moses that he responded, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us from this place.” 
 The presence of God meant more than anything to Moses. It’s as though he was saying, “I do not want that land You promised unless You are with us in it.” God said the land of Israel would be flowing with milk and honey. Moses was saying, “I don’t want the blessings of the milk or the blessings of honey unless you are with us in it.” 
 But what does it mean when God says, “and I will give you rest”? That word contains some of the deepest spiritual promises God has ever given. 
 What does it mean to rest? It means to cease striving, to cease from self-effort and self-reliance. It means to rely on what God has done and will do in your behalf. It has everything to do with faith. When you find your rest in God, you will know what it means to have faith. And when it comes to your relationship to God, faith is everything. “Without faith, it is impossible to please God.” 
In Hebrews 4, the writer reminds them of Israel’s famous failures. They tested God in the wilderness and hardened their hearts. It was lack of faith. It was a turning point in the history of Israel, and it wasn’t good. 
Because of that lack of faith, because they hardened their hearts and wouldn’t trust by taking God at His word, that entire generation died in the wilderness. They did not enter the land God had promised them. 
But more than that, they did not enter His rest. The promise of rest is the promise not just of eternal life, it has everything to do with the victorious life God intends for you right here and right now. 
I. When God Speaks Soften Your Heart 
 Verse 7 - God says to us today, just like David said to his generation, just like God said to Israel in the desert, “If you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” 
 Jesus gave a parable that in the same way that he farmer sows the seed and it lands on different types of soils, God sends His word and it lands on different types of hearts. 
 Those with hard hearts cannot receive the word of God and it bears no fruit. 
 When Israel was captive in Egypt, God heard their cries and sent Moses to confront Pharaoh, “Jehovah, the God of Israel, says to you, ‘Let my people go.’” 
Exodus 5:2, But Pharaoh said, “Who is Jehovah that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.” 
 But Israel did know the Lord, they were His chosen people. He revealed Himself to them. He spoke through Moses, he delivered Israel with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. He destroyed the armies of Egypt and delivered Israel through the Red Sea. 
 God did a miracle every day by providing manna in the desert. And though it tasted like Krispy Kreme doughnuts, it was healthy and nutritious. 
 But they hardened their hearts and grumbled against God, “Why did we ever leave Egypt? We remember the fish which we used to eat in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leaks and the onions and garlic. But now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all except this manna.” 
 They hardened their hearts and would not hear His voice. To teach them a lesson, God gave them what they wanted, He gave them quail, but He gave them so much it was running out their nostrils… 
Numbers 11:19-20, “You shall eat, not one day, not two days, nor five days, nor 10 days, nor 20 days, but a whole month, until it comes out your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you; because you have rejected the Lord who is among you and have wept before Him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’” 
 The lesson for you and for me is the same… 
Hebrews 2:1-4, We must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it… How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?

1. It has been rightly said that Christianity stands or falls on whether Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead. 
 
1 Corinthians 15:14, … if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, and so is your faith. 
 
2. Since the death of Jesus took place almost 2,000 years ago, how can we be certain that He was truly raised from the dead as Christianity claims? 
3. Tonight, we’re going to study one of the post-resurrection appearance accounts of Jesus Christ and discover life-changing answers to this question, answers which confirm what the angel said to the women at the garden tomb that Sunday morning, “He is not Here, He is Risen!” 
 
Luke 24:13-35 
 
Context 
1. Ever since the Resurrection of Jesus “Conspiracy Theories” have been concocted to argue against the most important event in human history. 
2. How do we know the Gospel accounts are reliable? 
3. Scholars have developed a standard for determining authenticity, standards similar to what detectives use to determine if a witness is credible. 
a. Early Testimony – How soon after the event was the testimony recorded? Less time means greater credibility. 
b. Eyewitness Testimony – Eyewitness testimony is stronger than second-hand accounts. When more than one independent witness attests to an event, there is a strong support that the event occurred. 
c. Embarrassing Details – Details which may embarrass a witness or potentially weaken one’s argument increases credibility because people typically try to make themselves “look good”. 
d. Unsympathetic Sources – If testimony affirming an event is given by a source who does not sympathize with the person, message, or cause, then authenticity increases. Typically, a person is biased against his or her enemy, not the other way around! 
 
I. Eyewitnesses Confirmed Jesus is Alive (15-24) 
 
A. First Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene 
 
Mark 16:9-11, Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping. And when they heard that He was alive, and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it. 
 
1. It was the first day of the week, Sunday. 
2. We’re told in Luke 24:1-12: 
a. Some women went to the tomb and found it empty. But angels told them Jesus had risen from the dead just like He had said. 
b. The women ran back to the apostles, but the eleven thought they were speaking “nonsense”. (11) 
c. Peter and John ran to the tomb. Their report was true; the stone had been rolled away, the tomb was empty, and only grave clothes remained. (John 20:4-10) 
3. The Gospels of Mark and John are clear that Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene and then to the other women. 
4. Why is this significant? Embarrassing Details! 
a. In that day and culture, women were treated like second class citizens. 
b. Their testimony wasn’t admissible in court. 
c. Therefore, if the Gospel writers wanted to avoid any questions about the resurrection of Jesus, they would have said that He only appeared to His “male” apostles! 
d. By declaring that Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene and then to the other women, God through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, strengthened the credibility of the Gospels accounts! 
 
APPL – At Christmas we celebrate Jesus Christ’s birth. 
• His was not a noble birth, though none born of a woman is more noble! 
• He was born in a manger and His first bed was a feeding trough for farm animals. 
• His first worshippers were dirty, despised shepherds. 
• Then after His resurrection, His first worshipper was a former prostitute who had been possessed by seven demons! 
• Jesus is not a Messiah for the rich and famous only. He is Savior for all!
