Today is Palm Sunday. This is the day the Christian Church remembers the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. 
2.When I think of Palm Sunday, I think of two verses from Psalm 24… 
 
Psalm 24:9-10, Lift up your heads, O gates, and lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in! Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory. 
 
3. But five days later, Jesus was crucified. 
4. What happened? How could Jesus be warmly received one moment and crucified less than a week later? 
5. Tonight, we’re going to take a break from our study of Matthew’s Gospel to look at the account of the Triumphal Entry from the perspective of Dr. Luke. 
6. In Luke 19:28-44, we will discover why the Jews did not recognize the time of their visitation and learn some valuable lessons so that we may let The King of Glory into our lives. 
 
1. What was the “climate” like in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry? In a word, “hostile”! 
2. After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, we’re told that while some Jews believed in Him, others didn’t and went to the Pharisees to tell them what Jesus had done. 
3. Did the chief priests and Pharisees rejoice at the news? Were they ready to recognize Jesus as their long-awaited and hoped for Messiah? Not at all… 
 
John 11:47-48, 57, Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and were saying, “What are we doing? For this man is performing many signs. If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him. 
 
4. They were so hostile towards Jesus they even talked about killing Lazarus “because on account of him many of the Jews were going away, and were believing in Jesus” (John 12:11). 
5. For a season, until the appointed time, Jesus no longer “walked publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness… and there He stayed with the disciples” (John 11:54). 
6. But when we come to Luke 19, it’s time for the Passover. 
7. Jesus went on ahead of His disciples and ascended to Jerusalem because it was the appointed time! (28) 
 
Throughout His ministry, there were many signs which confirmed Jesus is the Messiah. 
• Now it was the appointed time to present more prophetic signs which further confirmed He is Messiah. The signs also revealed the character of Jesus, the King of Glory. 
• Though Luke did not quote Zechariah 9:9, Matthew and John did, directly linking the manner in which Jesus entered Jerusalem to Zechariah’s prophecy. It was a sign the Jews “should” have recognized! 
 
Zechariah 9:9, Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 
 
From Zechariah 9, the Bible once again makes it clear that we do not pursue God, God pursues us! 
 
I. Behold Your King is Coming to You (29-35) 
 
A. He is just and endowed with salvation 
1. How was Jesus “just” or “righteous”? 
2. Jesus perfectly represented a holy God to fallen humanity through His life and ministry! 
 
Hebrews 1:3, And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature 
 
John 14:9, He who has seen Me has seen the Father 
 
3. Jesus was righteous in word and deed. He overcame every temptation leveled against Him by Satan and was victorious! 
Hebrews 4:15, For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 
 
4. So, Jesus was righteous and just, a confirmation that He was qualified to be Israel’s Messiah, their King. 
5. How was Jesus endowed with salvation? What kind of salvation was He offering?

Tonight we are going to talk about Spiritual War-fare…In order for this to be meaningful we must first believe it is going on all around us. 
Paul was the first man to go to Corinth and preach…he brought the Good News… 
• He would go and get a response - gatherings would result, small churches would form… 
• Paul had to move on - always moving… 
• In Corinth he needed to work hard to raise up elders to oversee the flock’s safety… 
• Think of Corinth as a place where wolves al-ways showed up to scatter the flock - the Be-lievers… 
• False teachers - the body needs to take steps to protect themselves… 
• But what happens when the flock embraces the wolf - The danger is off the scales…that’s what was happening in Corinth. 
There was unkind talk about Paul - this unfortunately won over many believers in Corinth - Be careful about the source of those influencing you… 
This was not first time Paul needed to defend his min-istry. 
So Paul exposes these Jewish legalist. 
In the letters Paul shares some personal comments about himself - He shares his heart with them - It gives us great insights into who Paul was. 
Chapters 8-9 were about Money 
Chapters 10 -13 Paul closes the loop on those attack-ing him - he has let them know I’m coming to town to get this straightened out. 
Parenting - those who travel for work can relate to this message! 
2 Corinthians 10:1-18 
I. Do Not Wage War In The Flesh 
Chapter 10 title at the top, “Paul’s defense of his min-istry” or “Paul Defends His Ministry” on some of your bibles. 
Whatever ministry you are in Paul has much for us to apply to our lives. Please know the truth here! We are all in ministry - all the time - 24:7 
• Paul is reminding them of his boldness in person - 
• He is saying, I hope I don’t have to show you my boldness…remember Paul stood up to Peter, called him out - 
• He says by the meekness (power under control) and gentleness of Christ I address you… 
• Meekness Jesus used but not “weakness” was He? He called people out! There was a need for gentle-ness among people but confrontation as necessary out of truth. 
• Walking in the flesh - we’re walking in our humani-ty on this earth but in warfare I don’t walk in this realm of the flesh - don’t fight in worldly ways. 
• Weapons not of the flesh - human weapons we know how to do that don’t we? 
• Knowledge, being bold, loud and a good speaker lacking compassion or truth, orator skills alone are not divine weapons, debate with arrogance instead of meekness & gentle-ness like Christ and like Paul.

1. Words are powerful. 
2. Words can make you laugh. Words can make you cry. They can motivate and they can discourage. 
3. Companies spend millions of dollars every year just looking for that memorable slogan, that catchy phrase, to brand their company and sell their products. 
 
4. During our study, we’re going to focus on seven memorable words from the Bible. 
5. These seven words will reveal God’s eternal plan for our lives and motivate us to experience the fullness of Christ every moment of every day. 
6. I believe these seven words from Colossians 1 will resonate in our hearts and encourage us to pray, “Give Me Jesus!” 
 
Colossians 1:24-29 
 
1. The Apostle Paul was in prison because of his faith in Christ and his proclamation of the Gospel to the Gentiles. 
2. Paul never met the Christians in Colossae, but he had received word that they were under attack for their faith. 
3. So, Paul sought to encourage them to stay the course and finish the race set before them; to stay strong in their faith, empowered by the Holy Spirit, all for the glory of God! 
 
I. Christ is in You (27a) 
 
A. Christ wants you… each of you 
1. In Christ, God’s mystery was unveiled, “the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints” (26). 
2. What mystery has God revealed through Christ? 
a. Jews are reconciled to God through Jesus. 
b. Gentiles are also reconciled to God through Jesus. 
c. Jews and Gentiles are one body, on equal footing, before God through Jesus Christ! 
 
Sharing with the pastors in Mwanza, Tanzania that Christ has broken “down the barrier of the dividing wall”! 
 
Galatians 3:28, There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave or free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 
 
B. Christ wants you… all of you 
1. Through His death on the cross, Jesus paid the price to redeem you from slavery to sin so that you might become a member of God’s family through faith in Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. 
2. At the very moment, a person confesses Christ as their Savior, their sin is forgiven, they are adopted into God’s family, and Christ through the Holy Spirit, indwells them working to conform them into the image of Christ. 
 
1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. 
 
3. What does it mean that Christians are a temple of the Holy Spirit? 
a. The tabernacle was comprised of three sections: 
• The outer courtyard 
• The holy place 
• The holy of holies, where the ark of the covenant was present with the glory of God residing over the mercy seat between the two cherubim. 
b. Only once a year was a person, the high priest, permitted to enter the holy of holies where God’s presence dwelt. 
c. On Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the holiest day on Israel’s calendar, the high priest entered the holy of holies, with fear and trembling, to sprinkle blood on the mercy seat to make atonement for the sins that Israel had committed during the previous year. 
d. The Greek word for the holy of holies is naos. 
e. When Paul declared that Christians are a temple of the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, he used the word naos, meaning we now are the holy of holies! 
f. We are walking miracles and Paul was exhorting the Christians at Corinth to live holy lives because the Holy Spirit dwells within us! 
It really comes down to choices. 
Problem: Many Christians have an “Open Door”/“Closed Door” relationship with God. 
 
Revelation 3:20, Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door; I will come in to him, and will dine with him and he with Me. 
 
Christ gave His all for us and demands nothing less than our all in return. The Apostle Paul understood this when he said…

3. Tonight, we will look at both views of greatness and discover how they differ and why they differ. 
4. Along the way, we will learn life-transforming principles from Jesus regarding Greatness God’s Way! 
 
Matthew 18:1-14 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 17, we’re told that Jesus took Peter, James, and John up to a high mountain where He was transfigured before them, “His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.” (17:2) 
2. Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus and they discussed the work that Jesus would accomplish through His death and resurrection in Jerusalem. (Luke 9:31) 
3. Imagine how Peter, James, and John must have felt after the Transfiguration. The glory of Jesus unveiled, a sneak preview of what is to come when Jesus, the King of glory, returns to establish His glorious kingdom! 
4. But their wonder quickly turned to alarm when they saw a problem with the other nine apostles in the valley below! 
5. The nine apostles who were left behind were surrounded by a large crowd and “some scribes” were “arguing with them”. (Mark 9:14) 
6. As Jesus approached them, a desperate father suddenly ran up to Him, fell on his knees before Him and said, 
“Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and is very ill; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him.” (17:14-16) 
7. Jesus asked for the boy to be brought to Him and He cured him immediately. 
8. Later, in private, the disciples asked Jesus why they were unable to help the boy. 
9. Jesus said the reason they were not able to cast out the demon was due to the “littleness” of their faith. (20) 
10. Jesus then explained what it means to have a faith that completely rests in God’s ability to move any mountain life may bring. 
11. But as we turn to Matthew 18, we learn that the spiritual warfare did not end with the deliverance of the boy for Satan had been working on another scheme, one that would divide Jesus’ twelve apostles. 
12. The Satanic seeds had been planted in each apostle’s heart. They wanted to know who was the greatest! 
 
Transition – When it comes to Greatness God’s way, the first principle Jesus taught was… 
 
 
 
 
 
I. The World’s Way is not God’s Way to Greatness 
 
• Perhaps things intensified when Jesus only took Peter, James, and John along with Him to the mountain where He was transfigured. 
• One thing is clear when you read all four Gospels, this debate had been going on for quite a while. 
• In fact, James and John eventually got their mother to plead her case as to why her sons should sit at Jesus’ right and left when He came into His kingdom! (Matthew 20:20-21) 
• So, in Matthew 18 they came to Jesus to settle the question. I believe they were expecting Jesus to point to one of them as the greatest, and deep down, each one of them thought they were it! 
• But their problem was that they were looking at the idea of greatness the way the world looks at it. 
• They wanted to be great in the eyes of man; they wanted position and power, to be in authority over others. 
• This was all about the motives of the heart and it became an opportunity for Jesus to teach them about God’s heart so that their faith might mature. 
• When Jesus transforms people He transforms their hearts. He takes them from what they once were in the world and makes them new. 
• Why? Because the world’s ways of doing things will not work in the kingdom of heaven. 
• God’s ways and God’s thoughts are higher than our own and He wants to make us walk on higher places. 
• Jesus is committed to transforming our motives, our desires, the way we consider others, and the way we look at ourselves to prepare us for His kingdom.

Today we are going to be in Acts - commonly called The Acts of the Apostles, but perhaps a better refer-ence would be The Acts of the Holy Spirit through the Apostles.

Jesus provided many promises, unlike the world had to offer me - one of those promises was eternal life and with that decision, the power of the Holy Spirit in my life. 
The Book of Acts was written by Luke, a physician who traveled with the Apostle Paul on his 2nd and 3rd missionary journeys. 
In this 1st chapter Jesus appears to the disciples after He is raised from the dead. Appearing over a 40-day period, teaching and speaking of the things concerning the Kingdom of God. 
The Gospels are about the ministry of Jesus Christ here on earth, but the book of Acts is about the minis-try of the Holy Spirit that Jesus sends. 
So we are going to do a verse x verse study of the first chapter together and uncover several Promises im-portant to our security in Christ today and also in the future. 
We are going to look at Jesus’ Ascension - His going back to Heaven after the resurrection and what differ-ence that makes to you and me. 
Acts 1:1-11 
I. The Promise of Power 
v1 - Theophilus - we don’t really know him or much about him. Some believe he was Lukes master - bib-lical times Dr’s were servants to the rich - 
Theory… 
v3 - He presented Himself alive - Praise God 
• So the Bible says for 40 days, 11 apostles were with Jesus for teaching - everything about His life, death, prophesies… 
• Remember, Judas was gone, he hung himself - 
• So Jesus did not immediately leave them! 
When you read the NT have you ever considered or thought about where all these uneducated, untheologi-cally trained men got their amazing theology, in-sights…? 
They were farmers, fisherman, tax collectors - Where did they get all this prophesy? 
From the Lord Himself…from the risen Christ Him-self! 40 straight days He taught them… 
v4 - Being assembled there, Jesus commanded them not to depart Jerusalem - to wait for the Promise of the Father…this is familiar to us isn’t it? 
• Where did He previously talk to them about the promise of the father - the coming of the Holy Spir-it? 
John 16:7-8; But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will con-vict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 
• This instruction is happening on the Mount of Ol-ives 
• So He’s saying, I’ve already spoken to you about this - stay here and wait. 
v5 - He reminds them that John the Baptist was bap-tized with water - but they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit, “not many days from now.” 
• You can read about it in Acts Chapter 2 
v6-7 - They ask, Lord will you at this time restore the Kingdom to Israel? It is not for you to know… 
You will receive Power… 
• They misunderstood His mission - they were still looking for a physical kingdom - what happened to Him was not their plan - but it was the Father’s plan. 
• It’s not for you to know the time and hour. They were looking for that - is now the time?

Have you ever had a mountaintop experience with the Lord that was so refreshing you honestly felt like nothing would ever bring you back down to earth? 
2. Was your mountaintop experience immediately followed by the crushing impact of being cast down to earth because of spiritual warfare? 
 
ILLUS – Alarming news after a men’s retreat 
 
3. Life is filled with peaks and valleys. Spiritually speaking, Mount Everest revivals are often followed by Death Valley battles. 
4. This is a scheme of the enemy. Satan seeks to “steal and kill and destroy”. (John 10:10). 
5. It’s critical for us to understand the devil’s schemes so that we are not caught off guard by Death Valley battles. 
6. Tonight, we will discover from Matthew 17:14-21 the keys to having a faith that is alive and growing, a faith that moves mountains when there is spiritual warfare! 
 
Matthew 17:14-21 
 
Context 
1. At this point in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus was approximately six months away from going to Jerusalem, where He would “suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.” (16:21) 
2. In light of this, Jesus told His disciples about what would happen in order to prepare them. 
3. But Peter didn’t approve of Jesus’ warning, so he rebuked Him and said, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” (16:22) 
4. Jesus didn’t entertain Peter’s words for a moment. In fact, as soon as the words left Peter’s mouth, Jesus turned His back to Peter, and rebuked him with the strongest possible rebuke, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” (16:23) 
5. Then Jesus called His disciples to Himself and shared what it means to be His disciple, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” (16:24) 
6. Jesus concluded by promising, “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.” (16:28) 
7. According to Matthew 17:1, Peter, James, and John only waited six days for the fulfillment of Jesus’ words. 
8. Jesus took Peter, James, and John to the majestic Mount Hermon and “was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.” (17:2) 
9. Moses and Elijah also appeared with Jesus and they discussed the work that Jesus would accomplish through His death in Jerusalem. (Luke 9:31) 
10. As they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.” (17:9) 
 
Transition – Imagine how Peter, James, and John must have felt after the Transfiguration. 
• The glory of Jesus unveiled, a sneak preview of what is to come when the King of glory returns to establish His glorious kingdom! 
• But their joy was quickly dampened when, to put it nicely, they saw a problem in the valley below! 
• They went from the glory of heaven to the attacks of hell! 
 
I. Let Jesus be the Lord of Your Valleys (14-18) 
 
• Satan didn’t waste time in bringing Peter, James, and John back to earth for the “next day” they were met with spiritual warfare. (Luke 9:37) 
• Mark’s Gospel states that the nine apostles who were left behind were surrounded by a large crowd and “some scribes” were “arguing with them”. (Mark 9:14) 
• Jesus came up to the disciples and asked, “What are you discussing with them?” (Mark 9:16) 
• Suddenly, a desperate father ran up to Jesus, fell on his knees before Him and said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and is very ill; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.” (17:14-15) 
• Mark and Luke gave us additional insight into the boy’s condition for the demon had made the boy mute, foam at the mouth, grind his teeth, scream, convulse, and maul himself. It was life or death for the boy. (Mark 9:17-18; Luke 9:39)

On March 25, 1993, at 5:34 a.m., Oregon experienced an earthquake. It was 5.6 magnitude on the Richter scale. I remember it well because I had driven straight through from Southern California and had just gotten into bed shortly after 3 a.m. I had never experienced an earthquake before so for me it was traumatic. 
I’m sure everyone who had moved here from California was casually riding it out, “What do you think, Honey, is that a 5.2 or a 5.3?” “No, that’s got to be at least a 5.5.” 
Speaking of California, seismologist say ‘the big one’ is overdue. It could bring untold devastation. But Oregon is also long overdue for an earthquake that could bring the worst natural disaster in US history. 
The point of this message is not earthquake preparedness. Well, actually it is; just not the kind of earthquake you might be thinking. These verses in Hebrews 12 contain an ominous and mysterious warning, “Everything that can be shaken, will be shaken, in order that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.” 
It’s a spiritual point. God will bring this world to a close. There will be a great shaking of this earth; the frequency and intensity of which the world has never known. It will be spiritual, that much is certain, but it will also be physical. In the latter days God will pour out His wrath and bring the world to a close. 
Many with spiritual discernment can sense this world is changing. Tectonic plates are shifting, you might say. Prophecy is unfolding, we are drawing near to the latter days. 
When things get shaken, that’s when you need a strong foundation. We have received a kingdom which cannot be shaken. We have a Rock on which to stand. 
Now is the time to build unshakable faith in your life. What are you building your life on? Don’t build your life on those things which can be and will be shaken. Build your life on those things which remain, those things which are eternal. 
For the last several weeks, we’ve been with Israel at Mt. Sinai as God gave Moses the law and commandments. In Hebrews 12, he uses the experience of Israel at Mount Sinai as a spiritual lesson. We who have believed in Christ have not come to such a mountain that was shaken by the power of God so terrible that even Moses was full of fear and trembling. 
You have come to Mount Zion, he says; the mountain on which sits Jerusalem. It’s a spiritual analogy. You have come to the living God, to the heavenly Jerusalem, to Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant that was enacted on better promise. You have come to the sprinkled blood of Christ which speaks a better word. 
In these words, there is a challenge. Take hold of what you have in Christ, a kingdom which cannot be shaken. Because everything that can be shaken, will be shaken. Strengthen your faith and build your life on this Rock. 
I. The Blood of Jesus Speaks a Better Word 
 One of the great themes in Hebrews is that what you have in Jesus is far superior to anything that came before it and far superior to anything this world has to offer. 
 God spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us in His Son. 
 God speaks; and He Speaks through His Son. And what He speaks is a better word. 
 Verse 18 --“You have not come to a mountain that may be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind.” He’s referring to when Moses went up to Mount Sinai to receive the Law from God. The people were afraid and asked Moses to speak for God because they were afraid of God’s voice. 
 You have not come to Mount Sinai, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem; you have come to Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant… 
 Everything you have in Christ is superior. 
 And you have come to the blood of Jesus which speaks a better word… 
A. The blood of Jesus speaks grace 
 The blood of Jesus speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

But King Solomon declared the pursuit of such glory is vanity. 
 
Ecclesiastes 1:2, “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, 
“Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.” 
 
3. And the Apostle Paul warned against such fleshly pursuits in his letter to the church at Galatia. 
 
Galatians 5:26, Let us not be desirous of vain glory (KJV) 
 
4. Yet, God wants us to know about true glory, His glory as revealed through His Son, Jesus Christ. 
5. Tonight, we will see the glory of Jesus revealed in a way that it gives us a glimpse into His person, work, and kingdom. 
6. We will also discover how God wants to change our lives through Jesus so that we may share His glory forever. 
 
1. Jesus traveled with His disciples about 25 miles north of the Sea of Galilee to Caesarea Philippi after He fed the 4,000 and healed many Gentiles in a region called the Decapolis. 
2. There, Jesus asked His disciples the one question that everyone must answer, “But who do you say that I am?” (15) 
3. Peter declared, “You the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (16) 
4. Jesus commended Peter for his answer and declared that upon Peter’s confession He would build His church. (17-19) 
5. Then Jesus showed His disciples that He, the Son of Man, would “suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.” (21)

What did Jesus mean by this promise in verse 28? It can be summed up with one word, “Transfiguration”! 
 
I. The Transfiguration is Jesus’ Glory Unveiled 
 
• According to Matthew 17:1, Peter, James, and John only had to wait six days for the fulfillment of Jesus’ words from Matthew 16:28. 
• Remember, that to the north of Caesarea Philippi, is the majestic Mount Hermon, with a peak over 9,000 feet. Likely, Jesus took the three disciples there. 
• According to verse 2, Jesus “was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.” 
• This transfiguration revealed important truths about Jesus’ person, work, and kingdom. 
 
A. The glory of His person 
1. Our English word metamorphosis comes from the word translated transfigured. 
2. A metamorphosis is a change on the outside which starts on the inside. 
 
It’s important to note that when Jesus was transfigured, He was not merely reflecting God’s glory externally. 
Rather, He was radiating His glory from within, meaning, the visible change on the outside came from within as Jesus allowed His divine nature to shine. 
 
Hebrews 1:3, And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature 
 
Jesus has two natures. He is fully God and fully man. 
The joining of His two natures is called the hypostatic union. The relationship between His two natures is best seen in Philippians 2:5-7. 
 
Philippians 2:5-7, Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

If you were to name people who have lived an effective life, who would you name? In the Christian world, I think many people would say Billy Graham, or Chuck Smith, or Greg Laurie, Luis Palau or perhaps James Dobson. Going back a bit further, perhaps Corrie Ten Boom or Charles Spurgeon. 
 
 But there are many others who lived the effective life you probably have never heard of. They are famous in heaven, however. 
 
 When you think of the most effective people in the Bible, who comes to mind? Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, Daniel, Isaiah, Elijah and Elisha? But what about those who aren’t so famous? Have you heard of Bezalel and Oholiab? You will hear of them today. Without question they lived the effective life. But what makes a life effective? 
 
 First, there is a distinction between the world’s definition and God’s definition of an effective life. God’s definition of an effective life comes from a spiritual perspective. God made us with a soul and spirit and an effective life comes from spiritual bearing. 
 
 To be effective means to accomplish a goal or purpose. To be spiritually effective you must fulfill God’s purpose. He wants your life to have meaning and purpose, to have value, to live for that which is higher and greater than yourself; to have spiritual significance and to make an impact on the people around you. An effective life is a fulfilling life because you are fulfilling God’s purpose. 
 
 In these verses today, you see those principles which God gives to those who seek to live the effective life and fulfill God’s purpose. 
 
 When God met Moses on Mount Sinai, He gave him not only laws and commandments, He also gave instructions for building the tabernacle, the place where God’s presence, His Shekinah glory, would be seen. God was fulfilling His promise that His presence would go with them as He brought them to the land He promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 
 
 God gave Moses detailed instructions about how the tabernacle was to be built. Every aspect of the tabernacle is a shadow of the throne of God in heaven itself and a symbol of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who makes relationship with God possible. 
 
 In these verses today, God called the men He desired to use in the craftsmanship of the tabernacle, and He called them by name. These are Bezalel and Oholiab; not famous in the annals of biblical history, but effective in fulfilling God’s purpose and examples to everyone who seeks to live the effective spiritual life and fulfill God’s purpose. 
 
I. God Calls You to His Purpose 
 
 God specifically called Bezalel and Oholiab by name for the purpose to which he had called them. 
 
 Does God call you as well? Absolutely. And He calls you by name… 
 
Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” 
 
A. God calls you to relationship first 
 
 What does the word ‘calling’ mean? Literally, it means to call someone’s name to get their attention. 
Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.” 
 God has a calling and gives purpose to your life, but God calls you to relationship with Him first. 
 When David was a young man, God called him and anointed him to become the next king of Israel. But long before that, David had a relationship to God. 
Illus - When David was just a simple shepherd, writing Psalms and singing to the Lord and playing on his harp, did he have it in his mind that one day he would be famous? Did he say to himself, “One day these psalms will be read all of the world, I should get a publisher.” Was that the reason David wrote the Psalms? No, David wrote Psalms and worshiped on his harp because of his heart for God. 
God called him to relationship before he called him to be king. The same is true for you and me.

2. When it comes to the Christian life, many Christians find themselves running into the wrong things. Why? 
3. Because they haven’t learned how to follow Jesus. 
4. Tonight, we will study a passage that is filled with life-changing principles which will reveal how to follow Jesus. 
 
Matthew 16:21-28 
 
Context 
1. After feeding the 4,000 and healing many Gentiles in the region called the Decapolis, Jesus traveled with His disciples about 25 miles north of the Sea of Galilee to Caesarea Philippi. 
2. It was there that Jesus asked His disciples the one question that ultimately everyone must answer, “But who do you say that I am?” (15) 
3. Peter declared, “You the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (16) 
4. After commending Peter for his answer and declaring that upon his confession Christ’s church would be built, Jesus “warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ”. (20) 
5. Why did Jesus restrict the disciples from sharing the identity of Jesus? 
 
I. Seek First God’s Interests (21-23) 
 
• In verse 21, Matthew recorded a pivot in Jesus’ ministry. 
• Jesus was nearing the end of His earthly ministry, so He began to prepare His disciples for His death and resurrection. 
• Here we discover that Jesus was wholeheartedly committed to fulfilling God’s will in God’s time. 
 
A. God’s will will be done 
1. Notice that Jesus showed His disciples that He “must go” to Jerusalem. 
2. The time had come for Jesus to fulfill the reason for His coming, to “suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.” (21) 
a. Jesus mentioned the elders, chief priests, and the scribes because the three groups formed Israel’s supreme ruling council called the Sanhedrin. 
b. When the Sanhedrin handed Jesus over to Pilate for crucifixion, it served as Israel’s final rejection of Jesus. 
c. The Sanhedrin had great influence over Israel as was seen when Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate. 
 
Matthew 27:20-23, But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death. But the governor said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Crucify Him!” And he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept shouting all the more, saying, “Crucify Him!” 
 
3. Peter would later declare this all happened according to God’s predetermined plan which God pronounced through His prophets. 
 
Acts 2:22-24, Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. 
 
a. David prophesied the manner of Jesus’ death approximately 1,000 years earlier. 
 
Psalm 22:16-18, For dogs have surrounded me; a band of evildoers has encompassed me; they pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. 
 
b. Isaiah prophesied Jesus’ resurrection over 700 years earlier. 
 
Isaiah 53:10, But the Lord was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; if He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, 
 
c. Jesus gave the warning in verse 20 because His death had to correspond with the death of Passover lamb in Jerusalem. 
d. Jesus is our Passover Lamb, sacrificed for the sin of the world. 
 
1 Corinthians 5:7, For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. (NIV)

When Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Law of God, he came down to find the people had fallen into terrible sin. Moses had been gone for a long time and they didn’t know what had become of him, so they asked Aaron to make a golden calf. It represented of one of the gods of Egypt; the god of fertility, virility, and strength. Then they “rose up to play” and it turned into a party. Moses became so angry he threw down the tablets of stone and purged the camp. 
 
 God later told him to bring two more stone tablets up to the mountain and he would write the words of the Law upon them again. That is where we find Moses in Exodus chapter 34. He spent another 40 days and nights receiving the Law again. 
 
When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, he did not realize that his face was visibly shining with the brilliance of God’s glory. I believe this was the condition in which man was originally created. Scripture tells us that it was only after Adam and Eve sinned, they realized they were naked. They were in God’s presence and they were filled with the radiance of His glory. 
 
 When the people of Israel saw Moses’ face radiant with glory, they were afraid to come near. They were afraid of God’s glory, so Moses put a veil over his face. 
 
 This story is not only about the glory of God which shown on the face of Moses, it’s also about the veil. Whenever he was in the presence of God, he would remove the veil. When he was with the people of Israel, he replaced the veil over his face. 
 
 Paul made a spiritual analogy in 2 Corinthians 3, saying that Moses wore the veil so the sons of Israel might not look at the glory - that was fading. In other words, they did not want to see God’s glory. They were afraid. 
 
 It was a picture of a veil that lies over their heart. But whenever a man turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away, so that we, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the image of God from glory to glory. 
 
 This story is filled with spiritual insight and application. 
 
I. God’s Glory is a Transforming Power 
 
 Moses was in the presence of the living God, that’s why there was glory on his face. 
 God’s glory was transforming Moses and that same glory is in the heart of the believer in Jesus Christ. In other words, God’s glory is transforming us. But into what? 
A. Into the image of God’s Son 
 
 God’s glory was transforming Moses because he was near to God’s presence. 
 There is something similar that happens in the life of the believer in Jesus Christ. When you have your own spiritual, devotional, personal, intimate “tent of meeting” encounters with God, you will, in fact, be transformed. 
2 Corinthians 3:7-8, If the ministry of death, in letters engraved on stones, came with glory, so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading as it was, how will the ministry of the Spirit fail to be even more with glory? 
 The Holy Spirit, the very presence of the living God, dwells in the heart of the one who trusts in Christ. 
 We love Romans 8:28, but we need to see that it only makes sense in the context of verse 29. 
Romans 8:28-30, We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, he also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren… And those whom He justified, He also glorified. 
B. The Holy Spirit is God’s presence 
 God’s intent is to transform us into the character, attitude, heart and actions of Christ in our lives. To change us from what we once were, into who we are in Christ. 
 He gives the Holy Spirit in the heart of the believer to bring that transformation. 
 Moses’ glory was fading when he was away from the presence of God, but we have the very presence of God within us.

4. It’s so important that one’s answer will not only impact their todays of this life, it will also impact their eternal tomorrows. 
5. It is for that reason that I call it “The Question”. 
6. Tonight, we will discover what “The Question” is along with the correct answer so that we may experience blessed todays and glorious eternal tomorrows. 
 
Matthew 16:13-20 
 
Context 
1. After feeding the 4,000 and healing many Gentiles in the region called the Decapolis, Jesus traveled with His disciples about 25 miles to the north of the Sea of Galilee to an area known as Caesarea Philippi. 
2. It was called Caesarea Philippi because it was founded by Herod Philip in honor of the Emperor Caesar. 
3. To the north of Caesarea Philippi, you can see the majestic Mount Hermon, with a peak over 9,000 feet, covered with snow almost all year long. 
4. Some of the headwaters of the Jordan River flow from this place. There is also a famous rock that stands massively out of the mountain from where the water flows out of a cave that the water was carved out of the limestone. 
5. The spring has been called Panias, or Banias, named after the Greek god Pan, “god of the desolate places”. In fact, the Temple of Pan was built at the base of the mountain and its remnants are visible today. 
6. It was there, that Jesus asked the disciples two questions, one general and the other personal in nature. 
 
 From these verses, we glean deep insight into who Jesus is, who Peter is, and who we are as the Church. 
 
I. Who is Jesus? 
 
• Jesus first asked, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” (13) 
• The disciples declared that there were many opinions swirling about regarding Jesus. (14) 
o Some said He was John the Baptist because, like John, Jesus called people to repentance in preparation for the coming of the kingdom of heaven. 
o Others said Elijah because, like Elijah, Jesus performed many signs and wonders in order to call Israel back to God during a time of great apostasy. 
o Still others said Jeremiah because, like Jeremiah the “weeping prophet”, Jesus had compassion for the lost. 
• There are also many opinions today. If you were to take a poll and ask people to respond to that question, many would answer: 
o “Jesus was a great teacher.” 
o “Jesus was a good example because He lived a moral life.” 
• Then Jesus asked them a second question, “But who do you say that I am?” (15) This is “The Question!” 
• In the Greek, Peter’s answer is powerful and clear. “You are the Son of God, the Christ.” (16) 
• In fact, it was for this reason the Jews had Jesus killed by the Romans. 
 
Matthew 26:63-66, And the high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN.” Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; what do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death!” 
A. This is not a trick question 
1. In fact, it’s an open book test! 
2. After Peter gave his answer, Jesus said, “… flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.” (17) 
 
Please note that since God reveals the truth to you, it is the most important question you will ever answer! It is not a trick question, again, it is an open book test.

As a result of Israel’s depravity in chapter 32, God said that they were to go up to the land that he had promised to give them, but that His presence would not go with them. He was speaking of the near presence of God. 
 
 When the people of Israel heard this sad word, they went into mourning and put off the ornaments they had been wearing from Egypt. Moses pitched a tent a good distance outside the camp and called it the tent of meeting. Everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting which was outside the camp. 
 
 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would arise and stand, gazing after Moses until he entered the tent. And whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the entrance of the tent. There the Lord would speak with Moses just as a man speaks to his friend. Whenever the Lord and Moses met at the tent of meeting, the people would stand in worship, each at the entrance of his tent. 
 
Moses interceded for the people of Israel in the tent of meeting. God saw that Israel had put off the ornaments from Egypt, He saw them when they worshiped, He saw them going to the tent of meeting themselves and He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” This meant so much to Moses that he added, “If your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from this place.” 
 
 Moses then asked for something for himself, something personal, “If I have found favor in your sight, let me know your ways, that I may know you.” 
 
 In verse 17, God answered, “I will do this thing of which you have spoken; for you have found favor in My sight, and I have known you by name.” Moses had the boldness to ask for one more thing. “Please,” Moses said, “show me your glory.” 
 
 God responded to this request, “I Myself will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you.” 
 
 This is one of the most important stories of the Old Testament because it touches the very core of our relationship to God. To understand the significance of the glory of God and the presence of God in your life, is to understand some of the deepest truths in our relationship to God. 
 
I. Ask, Seek, and Knock 
 
 Moses wanted more. He wanted to know God more deeply, “Show me your ways, that I might know you.” God was pleased, “I will do this thing of which you have spoken.” 
 
 Moses then asked, “Please, show me your glory.” There is no greater request; there is nothing higher than this. 
 
 No one had seen as much of God’s glory as Moses and yet he wanted more. God is pleased when you want more of Him. 
 
Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened… How much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” 
 
A. God’s goodness is glorious 
 God said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you.” God reveals His glory through His goodness. 
 God speaks of all His goodness and then says, “I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you.” 
 The name of the Lord speaks of the goodness of the Lord and gives the answer to your need. Do you need peace? He is Jehovah Shalom. Do you need provision? He is Jehovah Jireh. Do you need healing? He is Jehovah Rapha. Do you need rest? He is Jehovah Raah – God your shepherd. 
 He said His glory would pass by and Moses would see the glory that follows behind God. 
Illus – What follows behind you? The impact of your nature and character follow you. When you come into the living room and see an empty bag of popcorn, empty glasses and snack wrappers, you might say, “A teenager has been here.” Or if you come into a bedroom with socks, dirty clothes and a towel on the floor you might say, “A husband has passed by this way.”
