How can we know for certain that the Lord will return? 
2. Tonight, we will discover that the matter of Christ’s return is settled because God has already given us The Sign from Heaven which guarantees His return. 
 
Matthew 15:29-16:12 
 
1. Last week, we noted that after a heated exchange between Jesus and the scribes and Pharisees, Jesus headed to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Today this region is called southern Lebanon. 
2. It was the first and only time Jesus left Israel. 
3. In a region that was 35 to 60 miles from Galilee, an amazing exchange took place between Jesus and a Canaanite woman who had a daughter that was demon possessed. 
4. Jesus commended her for her faith and gave her what she requested, the deliverance of her daughter. 
5. From there, Jesus traveled back to the area of the Sea of Galilee, but this time he traveled to a southern district known as the Decapolis. 
6. The name “Decapolis” means “ten cities”. Rome had authorized this league of ten localities to mint their own coins, run their own courts, and even have their own armies. 
7. But what is significant for our study is that these ten cities were predominantly Gentile. The citizens of this region were well-versed in the worldly philosophies and false religions of the Roman Empire. 
8. It is fitting that Matthew would record this journey for it ties in perfectly with Christ’s interaction with the Canaanite woman. 
 
Transition – God sent Jesus, The Sign from Heaven, to the Gentiles. As The Sign from Heaven, what did Jesus’ presence and ministry reveal? 
 
I. God is a Compassionate God (15:29-39) 
 
• In verse 32, we’re told that Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.” 
• The word “compassion” means “that one’s heart is moved with passion”. In other words, Jesus saw the condition of these Gentiles who had been with Him for three days, and His heart was moved. 
• Knowing that God has a heart of compassion for us, encourages our hearts for that is part of knowing who God is. 
 
ILLUS – God had compassion on the people of Nineveh. 
 
Jonah 4:11, Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many animals? 
 
• There are other Scriptures which reveal God’s heart of compassion towards us. 
 
Psalm 103:2-5, Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; Who satisfies your years with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle. 
 
A. God wants to heal broken lives (29-31) 
1. When Jesus came to this area of the Decapolis, He sat down and the crippled, blind, dumb, and sick were brought to Him and He healed them all. 
2. Again, our faith is strengthened when we know who God is and His heart for us, which He revealed through His Word and His Son. 
3. God healed as a sign, a witness, and a testimony of His strength and power, even towards Gentiles not just His chosen people, the Jews. And we’re told that the Gentiles “glorified the God of Israel.” (31) 
 
ILLUS – God’s signs to Israel in the Old Testament. 
APPL – Today, God still wants to heal broken lives! He invites us to come to Him for only He can bring true hope and healing. 
 
Matthew 11:28-30, Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. 
God wants to satisfy hungry souls (32-39) 
1. Here, Jesus did another amazing miracle though it is often ignored by Bible students because the crowd was not as large.

We now move to chapter 33 of Exodus. One of the keys to understanding chapter 33 is that it follows chapter 32. The people of Israel thought Moses had been gone too long on the mountain, they didn’t know what had become of him. They insisted Aaron make a god to go before them. They hadn’t heard anything from Jehovah for forty days and decided they needed another god; any god would do, apparently. 
 
 So Aaron told them to tear off the gold rings which were in their ears and from the gold he fashioned a golden calf. Then they, and we don’t know for certain who they are, said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” 
 
 Interesting use of the plural in the phrase “these are your gods.” There’s just one calf there. Then, making this story even more intriguing, Aaron built an altar before it – obviously for the purpose of worship – and made a proclamation, saying, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to Jehovah.” 
 
 Now the phrase ‘these are your gods’ comes into focus. They weren’t trying to cast off Jehovah, they were adding the golden calf. You can take the people out of Egypt, but it’s hard to get Egypt out of the people. The Egyptian god, Apis, was a sacred bull worshiped in the Memphis region. He was the son of Hathor, mother of the sun god Ra, the symbolic mother of the pharaohs. He was the god of fertility and represented the strength and vitality of the Pharaoh. 
 
 They wanted Jehovah, but they also wanted the calf, made of gold, the god of fertility and virility and power. There is a great lesson in this story. You can’t have both. But many try, and you can be sure, God will not be pleased with it. 
 
They held a great feast and began to dance before it in a lewd way. When Moses and Joshua came down from the mountain, Joshua said, “There is the sound of war in the camp.” Moses replied, “That is not the sound of war - of triumph or defeat - the sound of singing is what I hear.” 
 
 Moses then became angry and threw down the tablets of the Law which God had given him, ground the golden calf into powder and made the people drink it. Then, he called out, “Whoever is for Jehovah, come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves to Moses. He told them to strap on swords and purge the camp. 
 
 Then we come to chapter 33. God told Moses to move the people from that place and go toward the land He had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. There are great lessons and applications out of this story. 
 
I. God is Faithful to His Promises 
 
 God promised this land to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and He is faithful to His promises. He told Moses to, “go up to a land flowing with milk and honey.” 
 
 He also said, however, that He would send an angel before them to drive out their enemies, but He would not go up in their midst because they were an obstinate and rebellious people, lest He destroy them along the way. 
 
A. His mercies are new every morning 
 
 Every person here has failed at one time or another and therefore we understand that if God gave us what we deserved, we would be in great trouble. By God’s mercy, He does not give us what we deserve. 
 This was certainly the low point of Israel’s relationship to God thus far. They were in fact a rebellious people. Therefore, God said that He would send an angel before them to destroy their enemies, but that He himself would not go up in their midst, lest God destroy them on the way. 
 I’m convinced God was saying this for no other reason than mercy. He is holy in every way and knew that if they were going to continue being stiff-necked and obstinate that He couldn’t be in their midst or they would be destroyed. 
Illus – The neck represents the attitude. We had many kids and there is a vast difference of reactions when you place your hand on the neck of a child with a willing heart. They welcome your hand and are comforted by it, but if their heart is not right, they resist it.

What comes to mind when you hear the word “great”? 
2. The word “great” is used in a variety of ways which reveals different facets of its definition. 
3. When it comes to faith, what constitutes great faith? 
4. Tonight, we will discover what God recognizes as great when it comes to our faith. 
 
Matthew 15:21-28 
 
Context 
1. Matthew 15:1 tells us that a delegation of scribes and Pharisees was sent from Jerusalem to check out Jesus. 
2. Their goal was to find a flaw in His life or ministry so that they may “knock Him down a few pegs”, or better yet accuse Him of heresy so that the people would reject Him. 
3. They followed Jesus and His disciples, watching their every move, ready to pronounce their condemning judgment of Him. Then they got their chance! Armed with their accusation, they sprung their question on Jesus. They had discovered that His disciples were not washing their hands according to the “tradition of the elders” before they ate bread. 
4. In response, Jesus rebuked the scribes and Pharisees for their failure to obey God’s Word because they had elevated the “tradition of the elders” above the Law. 
5. Then Jesus declared that a person is not defiled by what goes into their mouth, but by what comes out of it. (18) 
6. After this heated exchange, Jesus withdrew from that region and headed west then north along the Mediterranean Sea to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Today this region is called southern Lebanon. 
7. It was the first and only time Jesus left Israel. By doing so, He was also sending a message that visiting a Gentile region did not defile a man either! 
9. In a region that was 35 to 60 miles from Galilee, an amazing exchange took place between Jesus and a Canaanite woman which has direct application for us and our relationships with God. 
 
I. Great Faith Must Have a Great God (21-23) 
 
• A. W. Tozer once said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” 
• First, to have great faith, God must be the object of our faith! 
• Now you can have faith in people, products, or institutions but don’t be surprised when you realize that your faith was foolishly misplaced. 
• Second, to have great faith, our faith must be founded on a biblical view of God! 
• Do you believe that God is holy, loving, gracious, merciful, faithful, true, just, eternal, unchanging, all-wise, all-powerful, all-knowing, and everywhere present? If not, you don’t have the God of the Bible because your view of God is too small! 
• So, if we have a limited view of God, then we will have a limited or small faith. 
• Conversely, if we have a great view of God, then we have the potential for a great faith. 
 
A. Great faith knows Jesus is our only help (22) 
1. I’m sure this unnamed, Canaanite woman had turned to the pagan priests of Tyre and Sidon for help. She probably spared no expense to get her little girl the help that she needed, deliverance from demonic possession! 
2. But to her dismay, she discovered that her faith in the Canaanite gods was misplaced; they didn’t help! 
3. She had tried everything. She was hopeless. Who could deliver her little girl from the cruel demons that tortured her? 
• We turn to our friends. We turn to self-books. We even turn to Google looking for answers. 
• All the while, God is patiently waiting for us tire of running into these dead-ends that lead us nowhere. 
• Turn to Jesus, for our Great God and Savior is our only hope for help! 
 
4. One day she heard about this great man from Galilee, a Jew. He healed the blind, deaf, lame, and mute. He cured the sick and diseased. He cleansed lepers. He even fed 15,000 people with only five loaves and two fish. 
5. But her ears perked up when she heard that He delivered people possessed by demons! 
6. Suddenly faith filled her heart. She had hope. Sure, this man was a Jew, the Canaanite’s enemy. But she would not let national tensions or personal prejudice get in the way.

In Exodus, after Israel received the Law at Mt. Sinai, God told them to depart from there and go up to the promised land, and that God would send His angel before them to drive out the inhabitants of the land. But He Himself would not go up in their midst because they were an obstinate and sinful people. Lest He destroy them along the way. He was talking about the near presence of God. He is a consuming fire! 
When the people heard this, they went into mourning and removed any of the ornaments they still had from when they were in Egypt. Moses then interceded for the people. 
The presence of God was clearly with Moses. He had pitched a tent a good distance away from the camp of Israel. He called it the tent of meeting. Whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would stand at the entrance and God would speak to Moses there. 
There at the tent of meeting, Moses interceded for the people and God responded, “I will go with you and I will give you rest.” That meant so much to Moses that he said, “If your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here.” 
The presence of God is the key to our life as well and the book of Hebrews shows us the power of the presence of God like no other book. 
Hebrews gives some of the richest, most beautiful insights into what God has done for us through His Son Jesus Christ. Because of Jesus, we have the power of the presence of God in our lives. That is the foundation of faith. 
He was writing to Hebrews, Jews, who believed in Jesus Christ as the Messiah. But they were struggling in their faith. They were being pressured by the other Jews to go back to the ways of the Old Testament, back to the laws of Moses, back to the shadow of the thing, of which Christ is the reality, the substance. 
Line by line, he shows them that Jesus is superior in every way. Jesus is greater than Moses, He is greater than Solomon, greater than Jonah, greater than even Abraham. He is greater than the angels, He is greater than all the priests of the Old Testament, He is greater than the Sabbath and he is even greater than the temple itself. 
Why go back to the old life when what you have in Christ is superior to anything else? There is nothing better than Christ. There is no greater truth, there is no greater salvation. 
They were being pressured to go back to the old life and the old ways that were only a shadow of what they now have in Christ. Instead of falling backward, he challenges them to press forward, to draw nearer to God with a sincere heart and in full assurance of faith. 
This applies to many people today. Many are stuck in what I call the ‘miserable middle.’ They believe Jesus purchased salvation for them on the cross and received the offer of life, but the pressures of life, the worries and cares of the world and the desires for other things come in and choke their spiritual life and they find themselves in the miserable middle. He calls them to live nearer to God. 
When you understand what a great salvation you have and what God has done for you through His Son, Jesus Christ, you should press forward, you should draw nearer to God; with a sincere heart and with full assurance of faith. 
I. God Wants You to Draw Closer 
 The writer spent the last several chapters saying that Jesus is far superior to the old law in every way. 
 The law was weak and useless and could make nothing perfect and has therefore been set aside. 
 We have a better hope, through which we draw near to God, that hope is an anchor for our soul. Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. 
 Verse 19, however, opens the door to one of the deepest and greatest truths about the nearness of God because of what Jesus has done for us when he offered Himself as a sacrifice on the cross. 
A. We can enter the holiest place 
 The place nearest to God in the Temple was the Holy of Holies.

Along the way, they get off course, miss the mark, and suffer the consequences resulting in the loss of another day! 
 
APPL – Perspectives on living: Young people vs. Older people… 
• Young: Fun without consequences 
• Old: One choice negated other choices…

James 4:6-7, God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 
2. Be teachable - Stop and ask for help! 
 
James 1:5, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 
 
 3. Act upon God’s Word

II. Today - Make a Difference (16) 
 
 A. Redeem the time (16a) 
 
Quote: Strong’s Lexicon states “making the most of your time” literally means “redeeming the time.” “To buy up, to make wise and sacred use of every opportunity for doing good.” 
 
Quote: Warren Wiersbe adds, “As we obey His will, we buy up the opportunities and do not waste time, energy, money, and talent in that which is apart from His will. Lost opportunities may never be regained.” 
 
1. Implied - Rewards for good stewardship. 
2. Implied - Our days are numbered. 
 
Psalm 90:10, 12, As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, or if due to strength, eighty years, yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; for soon it is gone and we fly away. So teach us to number our days that we may present to You a heart of wisdom. 
 
3. The problem is life can be so mundane. 
4. But there are opportunities to buy up even during mundane times. 
5. Our choices during the mundane “Todays” 
 prepare us for handling future peaks and valleys. 
1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. And everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore, I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.

This book is written to believers in Jesus Christ who are Hebrews. These Jewish believers in Christ are very likely in Jerusalem, the birthplace of Christianity. That would make it the oldest, most a long-standing church of that day. 
Since it’s the oldest church, it might be reasonable to assume it would be the most mature church. But that wasn’t the case at all; it wasn’t growing in maturity, it was in danger of going backward. They were being pressured by the other Jews in Jerusalem, drawn back into Judaism, back to the ways of the Old Testament, back to the laws of Moses. They were moving back to the shadow of the thing, but the substance belongs to Christ. 
He writes to challenge them to press on to maturity, to grow deeper in their faith. By this time, they ought to have been teachers of spiritual things, but they needed again for someone to teach them the elementary principles of spiritual things. In other words, they had come to need milk and not solid food. 
We should be challenged by these words. Why is it that some people don’t grow in their faith, why is it that some people don’t increase in spiritual maturity? One of the parables of Jesus gives an answer. He taught that the word of God is sown like a farmer sowing seed and that the different types of soils are like different kinds of hearts. 
Some people hear the word of God, “but the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” 
Don’t let the Word of God become unfruitful in your life, press on to maturity. 
In the book of Hebrews he writes that in these last days God has spoken through His Son. He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature. God sent His Son with the message of His heart, but He didn’t send His Son just to give us an education, He sent Jesus to seek and to save that which was lost; to reconcile the world to Himself and to transform our lives so we experience the results of spiritual maturity. 
Don’t neglect so great a salvation, he writes. His desire is to bless our lives and to bring us into greater faith and greater spiritual maturity. 
I. Desire Spiritual Maturity 
 This book shows us Jesus like no other book in the Bible. It gives us some of the richest, deepest understanding of God’s Son and what He has done for us. 
 Jesus is our high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. What possibly can that mean? And why is it important? 
 This is an example of deeper truths. In fact, he writes, “Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.” 
 This takes us all the way back to the days of Abraham. There was a king who was also a priest. He was King of Salem, the city we know today as Jerusalem. His name was Melchizedek. 
 Later, in Chapter 7, he writes that Melchizedek was greater than Abraham because Abraham paid tithes to him and because Melchizedek blessed Abraham. 
 Therefore, Jesus, as king and priest in the order of Melchizedek, is Himself greater than Abraham and He is greater than any Levitical priest that came after Abraham. 
 In fact, Jesus is greater than Jonah, greater than Solomon, greater than Abraham, and greater than the Temple itself. 
John 8:57-58, The Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” 
Matthew 12:6, “I say to you, that something greater than the Temple is here.” 
Matthew 12:41, The men of Nineveh… repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 
Matthew 12:42, “The Queen of the South… came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 
 Concerning Jesus there is much to say, and we must be careful not to be dull of hearing. 
A. God expects you to grow in your faith.

In Exodus 23, Israel is at Mount Sinai receiving what will be called the law of Moses. It was the 10 Commandments, and so much more. These were the rules and principles that were to guide their lives as they entered the land God promised them. 
 
God wanted justice and righteousness and respect for one another. There were rules of charity and generosity. There were rules in the kind treatment of animals and the forgiveness of debt. There were instructions to help them understand how to be men and women with the heart and character of God. 
 
 You see that clearly in certain ordinances such as in 23:4-5, “If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey wandering away, you shall surely return it to him. If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying helpless under its load, you shall refrain from leaving it to him, you shall surely release it with him.” What character we would have if we lived these words today. Jesus taught principles that were similar; “I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.” 
 
 Some of the rules were certainly interesting. For example, verse 19, “You are not to boil a kid in the milk of its mother.” Very likely, God gave that rule so they would be distinct from the pagan nations around them. There is something cruel about the thought of boiling the kid of a goat in the milk of its own mother. It’s also likely, that God did not want the mixing of life – milk – with death. 
 
 Unfortunately, that’s one rule that has been taken to the extreme in Israel even today. When you travel to Israel, you cannot get milk in any form at dinner in the remote chance that whatever meat you choose might get mixed with the milk of its mother. But you can’t even get chicken with milk together and the last I checked you can get milk from the chicken. 
 
 The verses I want us to look at today, however, are filled with promises for Israel. There are amazing promises that are part of the Law of Moses. But they are also conditional. “If you will truly obey My voice and do all that I say…” 
 
 These rules are good for us to study because there are principles contained in these rules that show us God’s heart. There are also many promises God gives the believer today and we need to see how these apply to our lives. 
 
I. God Will Be with You Along the Way 
 
 God told Israel that he bore them on eagles’ wings and brought them to Himself, that they would a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. 
 
 God brought them to Himself and then promised to be with them along the way. 
 
 This is one of the greatest promises for the believer today. Jesus is Immanuel – God with us. 
 
Matthew 28:20, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” 
 
Hebrews 13:5-6, Be content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you,” so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?” 
 
 God’s presence is a promise and with it comes personal application. 
 
A. God will bring you safely home 
 
 God promised to send an angel. Many believe this was the pre-incarnate Christ that we see in many places of the Old Testament. 
 The promise was that He would go before them to guard them along the way and to bring them to the place which God prepared. 
 It’s very encouraging to know that God goes before us; that he knows what’s ahead in the journey of life, and that He will bring us safely home. 
 
John 14:1-6, “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” 
 
 God never promised a life free from troubles. He did promise to be with us in the storm and He promised to bring us safely home.

1. There are two types of people in this world. Those who are going through a storm and those who will be going through a storm! 
2. Jesus warned in John 16:33, “In the world you have tribulation”. 
3. “Tribulation” or storms can take many forms. There are literal storms, but there are also storms that come in relationships or financial difficulties, legal problems or health issues, the expected or unexpected death of someone near to you. There are troubles in the lives of our children, getting laid off at work, or even storms related to following Jesus and serving His people. 
4. Fortunately, there is more to John 16:33, for Jesus concluded by promising, “…but take courage; I have overcome the world.” 
5. Tonight, as we study Matthew 14, we will discover how we can be strengthened, by the storms of this life. 
 
Context 
1. The reactions to Jesus’ ministry are a story of extreme extremes. 
2. We noted last week, that while Jesus was rejected by the religious and political establishments, His popularity among the common people was booming. In fact, Jesus and the apostles were so busy that Mark wrote: “they did not even have time to eat.” (Mark 6:31) 
3. So, Jesus invited the disciples to get away for a retreat, to be refreshed so that He might prepare them for His departure; His death, burial, and resurrection. 
4. But as they were sailing on the Sea of Galilee, the crowds were watching from the shoreline so that they might meet Jesus when He came to shore. 
5. Once Jesus and the apostles landed, a huge crowd greeted them in that remote location. The disciples asked Jesus to send the crowd, over 15,000, away to find food since they did not have the means to feed so many. 
6. To their surprise, Jesus commanded them to give the people something to eat! Then He took the five barley loaves and two fish, the lunch a poor boy volunteered, and after giving thanks to the Father, began filling the apostles’ baskets full of bread and fish so that they could feed the crowd. All ate, all were satisfied, and there were twelve baskets of leftovers, one for each apostle. 
 
Transition – That brings us to a new scene in Matthew 14, where the apostles were alone in a boat and Jesus was in prayer on a mountain when a storm hits. When storms hit, remember that… 
 
I. You are not Alone 
 
• In verse 22, we’re told that Jesus made the apostles get into the boat. Literally, “He compelled them to get into the boat.” 
• I’m sure the apostles did not want to leave Him, they were supposed to have a retreat, to be alone, and get refreshed. 
• But from the Gospel of John we discover there was another issue in the mix. We read that Jesus also sent the crowd away because they were intending to take Him by force and make Him king. (John 6:15). 
• The Jews were looking for someone to lead a revolt against Rome, and who better to lead them than this man who filled their bellies with bread and fish and clearly moved in God’s power. 
 
Warren Wiersbe, “Men will follow anyone who promises them the material things of life, but Jesus will not have ‘bread and butter’ disciples.” 
 
• Jesus also knew that His apostles wanted positions of power and might have agreed with the crowd in making Jesus king. So, He was protecting them from that temptation. 
• Jesus had something much more important to accomplish than overthrowing Rome; the overthrowing of sin and death and the establishing of an eternal kingdom with redeemed people serving as its citizens. 
•So, Jesus compelled the crowd to go away and also compelled His apostles to get into the boat. 
•Did Jesus know that He was sending His disciples into the eye of a storm? Of course! He knows all. But there are things that you can learn from a storm that you cannot learn anywhere else. 
 
A. Jesus is praying for you 
1. In verse 23, Jesus went up to the mountain by Himself to pray; it was evening. 
2. If you ever wondered why prayer is important all you have to do is look at Jesus’ example.

This is our third and final study through the Ten Commandments. The first four commandments were about relationship to God Himself. In Exodus 19 God said, “I carried you on eagle’s wings and brought you to Myself that you might be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” He has also called us to be a kingdom of priests and holy people. He wants to show them what it means to walk in faith as the people of God. 
 
 Jesus said the Law and Prophets can be summed up by the two greatest commandments: love the Lord your God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. These two great commandments are also seen in the Ten Commandments. 
 
Today we look at the last three of the Ten Commandments. There is an aspect of faith in applying these last three. It has to do with trusting God as the source of your life. 
 
Where does life come from? God gives life, the ability to breath, to work, to live from day to day. But there is a deeper definition of life. Jesus said, “The enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come that you have life and have it abundantly.” Jesus is speaking of life that’s deeper than simply breathing and working and living day to day. There’s more to life than that. It’s life that comes when the soul is filled with the life of God and there is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. 
 
These last three commandments say, “Trust God as your source of life.” 
 
 God gave these commandments to Israel for their benefit. They are given for our benefit as well. 
 
 Though we are not under law, but under grace, these commandments give us God’s heart. 
 
 Each of these reflects the heart of God’s holiness and righteousness and it’s to our benefit to understand what God is saying in each one of these commandments and how they should be applied to our lives. 
 
I. Do Not Steal 
 There is an assumption in this commandment that we have the right of ownership of things. 
 In contrast, Karl Marx believed that private ownership was the root of many evils in society. In the Marxist doctrine, the answer to the ills of private ownership was state ownership of everything. The result was communism. 
 Any society that allows stealing will turn into chaos. 
Illus – Several years ago Matthew traveled to the DRC. As he was going through the final inspection of his luggage at the airport, it turned into chaos when airport workers just helped themselves to whatever they wanted out of his luggage. 
 This is the only commandment that is open-ended; there is no indication at all what we are prohibited from stealing. Which therefore suggests that we are not to steal anything that belongs to someone else. 
 
 There are two general categories of stealing. First, taking physical property which belongs to someone else, and second, taking anything that’s not tangible, like a person’s reputation, or trust, or dignity or intellectual property. 
 
A. Stealing is selfish 
 
 This commandment presupposes that after the fall of man, the condition of the heart would be that of selfishness, of placing our own wants and desires above concern for others. 
 The one who steals is favoring himself at others’ expense. It’s a shortcut to satisfy greed. 
 Stealing of course hurts others, it also hurts the one who steals. You are robbing yourself of character and integrity - which are of great value. 
Proverbs 22:1, A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches. 
B. Deceiving the mind is the root of stealing 
 In order to steal, a person must transform his mind into justifying it. He must find a way to make that which is bad sound good to himself. 
 In other words, he must convince himself of his goodness. Who is he talking to? To himself. This person must neutralize the values that would otherwise keep him from doing wrong. 
 There are many lies people tell themselves. They fall into several categories.

3. Tonight, we will study a familiar passage from Matthew 14, a miracle of Jesus, in fact the only miracle that is recorded in all four Gospels, and there discover what God can do when we place our lives in Jesus’ hands. 
 
Matthew 14:13-21 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 12, the scribes and Pharisees accused Jesus of using His Satanic power to heal people and deliver demoniacs from evil spirits. Their accusation was an official rejection of Jesus by the religious establishment. In essence, they declared that Jesus was not Israel’s Messiah, the promised King of the kingdom of heaven. He was from hell. 
2. The rejection Jesus experienced did not end with the scribes and Pharisees, for Matthew also wrote that Jesus was rejected by the residents of His hometown of Nazareth (Matthew 13:53-58). 
3. Even though the scene shifts to the death of John the Baptist at the hands of Herod Antipas in Matthew 14:1-12, the theme is still the same, rejection. You see, John the Baptist was the forerunner of Messiah, the one who declared that Jesus is the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29). By putting John to death, Herod was rejecting Jesus as well. All of this was a fulfillment of Isaiah 53:2-3… 
 
Isaiah 53:2-3, For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows and 
acquainted with grief; and like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 
 
4. According to the other Gospels, Jesus received word of John’s death around the time that His apostles returned from being sent out to proclaim the coming of God’s kingdom. They gave Jesus an update on all they had done; the healings, the exorcisms, and the response to their kingdom proclamation. (Luke 9:1-6) 
5. After receiving their report, Jesus invited His apostles to get away from the crowds to be refreshed and receive instruction about His death and resurrection. (Luke 9:10-11) 
6. Though Jesus had been rejected by the religious and political establishments, His popularity among the common people was booming because of the miracles. In fact, Jesus and the apostles were so busy that Mark wrote “they did not even have time to eat.” (Mark 6:31) 
7. While traveling across the Sea of Galilee, northeast towards Bethsaida, the crowds could see where Jesus was going and quickly followed on foot in order to meet Him once He came to shore. (Luke 9:10-11) 
 
Transition – It was supposed to be a retreat! But as we look at Matthew 14 and the other Gospels, a clear picture comes into focus for what it means to be in Jesus’ hands. 
 
I. Our God is a Compassionate God 
 
• It was the making of a perfect storm. Rejection. Fatigue. Large crowds (over 10,000 to 15,000). A remote location (far from lodging and food). 
• But when Jesus came to shore, the first word to describe His heart for the crowd was “compassion” because “they were like sheep without a shepherd” (Mark 6:34). So, He healed their sick and taught them many things. (Matthew 14:14; Mark 6:34) 
• The word “compassion” speaks of a strong emotion “to feel deep sympathy”. Truly the people must have been encouraged by the tender care of Jesus. 
• But did Jesus forget about His apostles? No! In fact, they were right in the middle of God’s will for what happens next taught them a lesson that would transform their lives, and ours as well.

In Exodus 20, Israel has come to Mt. Sinai where God gives Moses the famous Ten Commandments. Last week we studied the first four commandments. 
 
Why did God give them commandments at all? Because they needed to be transformed. They had been living as slaves in Egypt. God set them free from the oppression, but they didn’t know how to live as men who were free and they certainly did not know what it meant to live as a holy people. Yet that is what God called them to be. 
 
 In chapter 19, God said, “I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself… that you might be a kingdom if priests, a holy nation.” 
 
 We are not under law, but under grace. But that doesn’t mean we can sin as we wish. Not at all, the word ‘godly’ means, like God. The commandments give us the heart of God and each of the commandments are for the benefit of God’s people as they help us understand His heart to protect us from danger. 
 
 The first four commandments summarize the greatest commandment, love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. The last six summarize the commandment that is like it, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 
 
In other words… 
 
 Honor God by Honoring Others 
 
 When you love your neighbor as yourself, you are honoring God. 
 
 The relationship we have to others flows out of, is a result of, our relationship to God. 
 
 Each of these reflects the heart of God’s holiness and righteousness and it is to our benefit to understand what God is saying in each one of these commandments. 
 
I. Honor Your Father and Mother 
 
 Scripture tells us that this is the first commandment with a promise; if you honor your father and mother your days will be prolonged in the land. In other words, you receive a blessing from God when you honor your father and mother. 
 
 There are two ways of seeing that promise. Some suggest it means that by honoring your father and mother you will live a long life. I’m sure there has been more than one father who’s quoted the famous comedian, “I brought you into this world, and I’ll take you out.” 
 
 But more likely, the promise that comes with this commandment is that they will be strong as a nation when they honor their father and mother. Why? Because… 
 
A. Family is the foundation of a nation 
 This promise was made to Israel, but the principle is most certainly true today. The family is a foundation and a key to a nation’s prosperity and strength. In other words, when the family breaks down, it’s only a matter of time before that nation weakens and crumbles. 
 God’s intend with this commandment was to bless them as a nation and to keep them strong. 
 Is not the fabric of our nation being destroyed before our eyes? Many children today are defiant and rebellious. Teachers in public schools should get hazard pay. 
 Paul wrote that this is one of the conditions that indicate we are living in the last days. 
2 Timothy 3:1-4, But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. Men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, and unloving…lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. 
 The answer is to honor God in your own life and then raise your children in the admonition and instruction of the Lord. 
 There are two aspects of this commandment; 
B. Be honorable parents 
 Paul wrote that parents should not exasperate their children. 
Ephesians 6:4, “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” 
 In my parenting class I give this basic principle; raise your children in such a way that they won’t need counseling later. 
 Perhaps we could also set our sights higher and bring our children to a place of agreement with our heart. In other words, win their heart. 
Amos 3:3, Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

At this point in Exodus, Israel has come to the wilderness of Sinai and specifically, Mt. Sinai where God gave the Ten Commandments to Israel. 
 
 He begins in verse two by saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.” He was the God who created them and He was the God who loved them by delivering them out of the bondage of slavery, and He therefore has the right to give them rules, principals, and laws to guide their lives. 
 
 There is much more to the Law, but the Ten Commandments in many ways define the covenant relationship between God and the people of Israel. It defines not only their relationship to God, but also their behavior toward each other. In other words, it defines morality; but because these are decrees from God, they stand in direct opposition to all relativistic approaches to morality. 
 
 Relativistic morality is the notion that each individual or society determines what is right or wrong. However, if society determines what is right, then who is to say that the Holocaust was immoral? Or, to quote Ravi Zacharias, “in some societies they love their neighbor and in others they eat them; who decides which is right?” In other words, is there not a law above all laws? If there is a God in heaven, then He most certainly has the right to determine what is right and wrong. 
 
 Most of the commandments are given as prohibitions, “… you shall not.” But this reflects the necessity for people to avoid wrongful and hurtful behaviors in order to build a strong and stable society. In the words of the famous rule for physicians, “First, do no harm.” 
 
 Notice also that the Ten Commandments are given in terms of obligations, not rights or entitlements. Our Declaration of Independence says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with inalienable rights; that among these, are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” 
 
 We are endowed with these inalienable rights because we are made in the image of God. However, such basic human rights are only possible if people first feel morally obligated toward others. One of the most famous of God’s laws quoted by Jesus, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” is written as a moral obligation to act with love toward your neighbor, rather than as a right -- You have the right to be loved by your neighbor.” 
 
 What was the purpose of the law? It was for their good, their benefit. In fact, the Apostle Paul said that the Law is good and went on to say that it is also a schoolmaster that leads people to Christ. 
 
 We understand from the New Testament that we are not under the Law, because we are under grace. But that doesn’t mean we are free to sin as we wish. That doesn’t mean God doesn’t want us to live holy, or in a way that doesn’t please Him. That’s why Paul wrote in Romans 6:15, “What then, shall we sin because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.” 
 
Jesus said, “I did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill the law. Not one jot or tittle shall pass away until all is accomplished.” 
 
 The Law describes the righteousness of God. It gives His heart for protecting people from those things which are harmful to their lives. The Law has not passed away; it has been nailed to the cross and superseded by the law of the Spirit of Christ. 
 
Illus – Flying Aeroflot to Russia, I was worried whether the plane would actually make it off the runway. The law of gravity will always be in place, but it has been superseded by the law of aerodynamics. 
 
 Today we will look at the first four of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments can be divided into two groups, the first having to do with relationship to God, and the last having to do with relationship to others. 
 
I. Love the Lord with All Your Heart
