What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “The kingdom of heaven”? 
2. For many people there is confusion when they think about the kingdom of heaven. 
3. They think about the conditions of heaven eternal and expect those should be the conditions of things now, here on earth, and they are greatly confused as to why that is not so. 
4. And so they ask questions like, “Why do the wicked prosper?” “Why does it seem that injustice is growing?” 
5. Fortunately, God does not want to leave us in a state of perpetual confusion. 
6. In the three parables we will study, Jesus described the kingdom of heaven so that we may understand what it is and not be surprised at what is unfolding here on earth. 
 
Matthew 13:24-43 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 13:1-3, we’re told that Jesus taught the crowds many things using parables. What is a parable? 
2. By way of review, the word parable comes from two Greek words, para and ballō, which together means “to throw alongside”. 
3. A parable, like a story or an illustration, makes a comparison between a known truth and an unknown truth. It “throws them alongside” each other. 
4. A parable teaches one main truth, though there might be many parts or different characters used to develop the main truth further. 
5. Jesus used familiar things like sowing seed to reveal spiritual truths that had never been revealed to Israel in the Old Testament, truths about the kingdom of heaven. 
6. Because parables use something familiar in story-form to make a point, the parable draws the listener into the story in order to bring them to a point of decision! 
7. Why did Jesus shift His approach to teaching and use parables? 
8. Remember in Matthew 12, the scribes and Pharisees accused Jesus of using Satanic powers to heal people and deliver demoniacs from evil spirits. Their accusation was an official rejection of Jesus by the religious establishment. In essence, they declared that Jesus was not Israel’s Messiah, the promised King of the kingdom of heaven. He was from hell. 
9. Matthew gave gave two reasons for Jesus’ use of parables: 
a. First, parables reveal spiritual truth about the kingdom of heaven to those who earnestly seek it. At the same it, parables conceal spiritual truth about the kingdom of heaven from those with rebellious hearts. Thus, parables reveal and conceal spiritual truth. 
b. Second, by using parables, Jesus fulfilled Messianic prophecy. In verse 35, Matthew quoted Psalm 78:2. 
 
Psalm 78:2, I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old… 
 
Transition – With that understanding, let’s look at the second, third, and fourth parables in Matthew 13. 
 
I. The Kingdom of Heaven will have Tares 
 
• In verse 24, Jesus presented a parable that revealed another facet about the kingdom of heaven. 
• Starting in verse 36, Jesus explained the meaning of the parable by defining the different elements. 
• The sower is the Son of Man, meaning Jesus (37). 
• The field is the world, not the church (38). 
• The good seed are those who come to faith in Jesus after hearing God’s Word. These are the “sons of the kingdom” who are scattered throughout the world so that God has a continual witness (38). 
• The tares are the “sons of the evil one”, planted by the devil to counter the “sons of the kingdom” (38-39). 
• The harvest is the judgment at the end of age and the reapers are God’s holy angels (39). 
 
A. Wheat and tares must grow together 
1. In the parable Jesus explained that the servants discovered tares growing amongst the wheat and asked if the landowner wanted to root them out. 
2. Tares are darnel weeds that look very similar to wheat as it grows, but it is very poisonous. 
3. In that culture, a mean-spirited farmer might sow darnel into his competitor’s field to make it poisonous. As a result, the farmer would either have to painstakingly remove the darnel at harvest time or destroy the entire field and lose the crop.

1. What kind of person blesses the heart of our Heavenly Father? 
2. Tonight, we’re going to look at one of my favorite men in the Bible, Caleb. 
3. In Numbers 14:24, God declared that His servant Caleb “had a different spirit” therefore God promised that he would inherit a portion in the Promise Land. 
4. Caleb’s spirit was different in what way? 
5. Usually when someone is called “different”, some negativity is implied. 
6. This was not the case with Caleb. 
7. Caleb’s spirit along with God’s testimony about him give us insights into the type of person God wants all of us to be. 
8. The kind of person that causes God to rise up, take note of, and declare, “Well done My good and faithful servant.” 
 
Joshua 14:6-15 
 
Context 
 
1. Joshua 14 is where the story gets very interesting. The sons of Judah came to Joshua and Caleb said to him, "You remember the word which the Lord spoke to Moses concerning you and me at Kadesh Barnea. He swore to us that the land on which our foot has trodden shall be our inheritance. Now then, give me the land which was promised." 
2. Caleb was an amazing person in the Bible and there is much to learn from his life. At this point he was 85 years old and he said that he was just as strong as when he was 40 years old! 
3. Caleb wanted the most difficult land in Israel. It was the most difficult because it was hill country, with difficult terrain. 
4. But its greatest challenge was that the Anakim were there. The sons of Anak were large people and it was they who had put fear into the hearts of Israel at Kadesh Barnea 45 years earlier. 
5. Caleb had been waiting 45 years for an opportunity to face the sons of Anak and take the hill country that God had promised. 
6. It’s important to note that the Promised Land is also a picture of a believer who is walking victoriously by faith. It takes courage to take hold of God’s promises and Caleb is a tremendous example for us. 
 
Transition - Like Caleb we must… 
 
I. Follow God Wholeheartedly 
 
• In verse eight, Caleb compared himself to the ten spies who went up into the land of Canaan and came back with a bad report. 
• The other spies made the heart of the people melt with fear, so this was why Caleb said, "But I followed the Lord my God fully." 
• The results of faith versus fear become immediately clear to all. 
• Five times in this section Caleb pointed out that he had followed the Lord wholeheartedly, which is a key to understanding the strength of Caleb's faith. 
 
A. Let faith strengthen your heart 
1. If you go back 45 years earlier, you can see that faith and fear have a direct impact on what happens in the heart. 
2. Caleb pointed out the problem perfectly when he said in verse eight that because of fear the heart of the people melted. 
Numbers 13:30-31, 33, Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we shall surely overcome it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us. There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” 
 
3 The problem was that the spies only saw the troubles and challenges. They saw that there were giants in the land, then they looked at themselves and saw themselves only as grasshoppers in their own eyes. 
4. In other words, the giants and the challenges were great, and they were too small. They made a direct comparison between the problem and themselves and that is where they made a huge mistake! 
APPL – The greatest fear that people have is the fear of the unknown. “What if this or that happens?” 
5. Caleb saw God’s promises when others saw giants. 
6. Like Caleb, we need to take hold of God’s perspective and trust every promise He gives us from His Word.

One of our greatest struggles; anxiety, like a thief, anxiety steals joy & our confidence. 
The Apostle Paul deals with worry and anxiety. 
Anxiety steals for decades – Americans worry about all kinds of health things like water, filters, the air we breath, etc. - need only look at the many bottled water choices at retail… 
YET 20% smoke, 20% do not wear seat belts, & an estimated 75% text while driving – we worry about perceived danger and ignore real… 
2019 is upon us – I was thinking about this time of year and the unfortunate part of the Christmas and New Year season - many, some more than others - have STRESS & WORRY. 
Psychology studies suggest that 64% of people say anxiety goes up this time of year; in part, 72% peo-ple travel between Thanksgiving & New Years…and travel raises stress. 
Jesus said in Luke chapter 10, Martha, Martha you are anxious and troubled about many things, 
Paul wrote this personal letter to the Philippians while in a Roman prison - about strength in Christ, particularly a call to rejoice in spite of suffering. 
Philippians 4:6-9 
I. Be Anxious For Nothing 
How many times are we surrounded by worriers, doubters, those stressed by virtually every topic? 
Outwardly! Our world offers much to be stressed about doesn’t it? 
What are some of these Global things: 
• Economy 
• Stock market 
• Value of the dollar 
• Untruthful leaders on both sides - 
Closer to home & more common uncertainties like a difficult employment or no employment, sickness, diseases, college bills. 
Matthew 6:34; “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. 
My sister is battling Lung Cancer, my dad’s health fragile at best… 
The Bible hasn’t changed? - - Our Lord Jesus hasn’t changed has He? - - yet I believe there is more pres-sure on the church to know more about counseling Anxiety today. The bible’s answers haven’t changed! 
I’ve worked with many folks in the business world who go to work on Monday & can’t wait until Fri-day? Anxiety! 
As a Fire Department Chaplain, I learned that my radio’s call for a CODE 99 - a Cardiac Arrest - was often 1st thing in the morning, mostly men, when they were getting ready for work… 
A. God’s peace available to all 
Dr. Robert Leahey, one of the leading minds & au-thors in Cognitive Behavior Therapy… 
• Income or lack of… 
• Social Security System 
• Terrorism 
• Healthcare 
• Race Relations 
Anxiety, Worry, whatever you want to call it risks choking out the faith of many Christians. 
This poses a dilemma for the average Christian – A choice - Worry – allow it to fight against and disin-tegrate the faith you have been building up? 
Outwardly there is much to be stressed about in all these areas of life… 
John 14:27; Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. 
Inwardly the peace of God passes all understanding – He's given us access to peace - we must chose to embrace it! 
B. Anxiety is not from the Lord 
Ruth Graham Bell once said, “Worship and worry can’t live together in the same heart” 
Proverbs 12:25; Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, But a good word makes it glad. 
Text of Philippians tackles this Monster of Worry - Common problems that face Christians – 
1) Drifting off course 
2) Division among the saints 
3) Discouragement 
4) Hard Heart/Root of bitterness 
II. Have The Mind of Christ 
Do you hear Paul exhorting in vs 6-9 in chapter 4; he has an exhortation tone… 
John 14:1; “Do not let your heart be troubled; be-lieve in God, believe also in Me. 
• Don’t be consumed by stress of life....believe also in Me… 
John 14:3; If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

 Working with soil is fascinating. There are certain types of soil where the condition of the soil is obvious; you know what you are in for before the shovel hits the dirt. 
2. There are other types of soil where the condition is not so obvious; you must dig beneath the surface to know what kind of soil you’re working with. 
3. The same is true with the heart. The human heart is fascinating, not just the physical ticker, but the soul of a woman or man. 
4. In Matthew 13:1-23, Jesus connected the human heart with four types of soils to reveal the different responses people have to Jesus and God’s Word. 
5. Jesus made the connection so that we may take a careful inventory of our lives and know the condition of the soil of our hearts. 
 
Matthew 13:1-23 
 
Context

9. Now, their final rejection occurred when the Jewish leaders asked Pontius Pilate to release Barabbas so that Jesus could be crucified (Matthew 27:20-22). Nevertheless, the lines were drawn in Matthew 12 for the nation of Israel had officially rejected their King. 
10. This context helps us understand what Jesus meant in Matthew 13:10-17. Here Jesus gave two reasons for His use of parables: 
a. First, parables reveal spiritual truth about the kingdom of God to those who earnestly seek it. At the same it, parables conceal spiritual truth about the kingdom of God from those with rebellious hearts. Thus, parables reveal and conceal spiritual truth. 
b. Second, by using parables, Jesus fulfilled Messianic prophecy. Here He quoted from Isaiah 6, but also note Psalm 78:2.

Transition – Now, let’s look at the first of the seven parables in Matthew 13, The Parable of the Sower and the Four Soils. 
 
I. Some Hearts are Hard like a Beaten-down Path 
 
• Let’s identify some key elements of this parable. 
• First, according to verse 37, the “sower” is the “Son of Man”, Jesus. 
• In verse 19, the “seed” is the “word of the kingdom”, meaning the Word of God and the “evil one” is Satan. 
• In that day, seed was sown one of two ways: 
o Some farmers would walk through their fields with bags of seed and scatter the seed by hand. 
o Others, lazy farmers, would simply place a bag of seed on the back of a mule, slice a hole in the bag, and walk with the mule as the seed fell out of the bag. 
• This information was familiar to all who were listening to Jesus from the shore of the Sea of Galilee. 
• But here, Jesus links the sowing of seed to the four ways people will respond to the message of the kingdom of God.

At this point in Exodus, Israel has been set free from the oppression and slavery of Egypt and are now in the wilderness, the desert. God was leading them by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. 
 
 He did not lead them directly to the land of Palestine, though it was only 120 miles or so if they traveled on the main road. They would have encountered war and would have immediately returned to Egypt. They were not prepared for war. 
 
 Instead, God led the people around by the way of the wilderness to the Sea. The Egyptians saw this and thought they were wandering aimlessly and decided to pursue and force them to return or destroy them. They thought Israel was trapped. But God showed His power, parted the Sea, and Israel crossed over on dry land. When the Egyptian army followed, the waters returned and destroyed Pharaoh’s army. 
 
 In chapter 15, God led Israel three days journey beyond the Sea into the wilderness. They were distressed because they found no water. They came to a place called Marah where they did find water, but the water was bitter; it was salty or brackish. 
 
 Here Israel was to learn important spiritual lessons and there are many lessons for us to learn as well. They are now traveling through the desert and they are faced with the question, “How are we to survive? What will we drink? How will we live?” It’s a question of faith for them and for us. 
 
 The problem was in how they responded. They grumbled against Moses. How you respond when you encounter bitter things has everything to do with your faith. 
 
I. Don’t Let Bitter Things Make You Bitter 
 
 Israel was beginning a forty-year journey and must learn to trust God along the way. 
 
 Bitter things happen in life. The question is – how will you respond? 
 
 The Israelites crossed the sea. There was no going back to Egypt to get water. God demonstrated His power and destroyed the Egyptian army, but it also created a “burn the ships” moment. They must go forward, they could not go back. 
 
 That also meant they could not go back for provisions. They would have to trust God along the way. 
 
 They were in the desert and were thirsty. They saw water up ahead and everyone’s hopes were lifted. That is, until they drank the water and found it was bitter. 
 
 They respond by grumbling against the Lord. Not just asking, “What shall we drink?” But grumbling. Complaining. Becoming bitter. 
 
Illus – In the book of Ruth, Naomi and her husband encountered hard times in Israel, so they moved to Moab with their two sons Mahlon and Chilion, whose names meant sickness and wasting away. Times have to be bad to name your sons ‘sickly’ and ‘wasting away.’ 
 
In Moab, her husband died and then her two sons also died. She returned to Israel with Ruth, the Moabite wife of her son, Mahlon. When her friends see her returning, they say, “Is that Naomi?” She responds, “Don’t call me Naomi, call me Mara, for the Lord has dealt bitterly with me.”

3. Tonight, we will study a powerful passage from Matthew 12 that will show just that, that Jesus is the Savior of the world because God did give a sign, one that is worthy of our complete trust. 
 
Matthew 12:38-50 
 
Context 
1. At this point, you could feel the tension in the air for the Pharisees had the audacity to declare that Jesus casted out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, and not by the power of the Holy Spirit. (24) 
2. They had heard Jesus’ teachings, the authority and wisdom of His words. 
3. They also saw lepers cleansed, the blind gaining sight, the deaf able to hear, the lame walking beside them, and the demon-possessed delivered. 
4. Nevertheless, they concluded that this was the work of the devil, not the work of the Holy Spirit, credentials from hell, not proof that Jesus is the King of God’s kingdom. 
5. Jesus rebuked them because they had crossed a line, one that has eternal consequences. Unconcerned by the warning, the scribes and Pharisees came back with a request, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” (38) 
 
Transition – It’s easy to gloss over the scribes and Pharisees’ request and miss the personal application. When it comes to Jesus… 
 
I. Are You Looking for a Sign or for an Excuse? 
 
• Their request implied that the previous miraculous signs of Jesus were not good enough. 
• They needed a really “good sign” so that Jesus might prove who He is to them. 
• In response, Jesus said two things, one about them and the other about their request. 
• First, that they were an “evil and adulterous generation” because Israel was morally bankrupt and had forsaken their covenant with God by rejecting His Son, Jesus. 
• Second, that no sign would be given but the sign of the prophet Jonah. 
• Let’s look at each part of His answer and discover important applications for our lives. 
 
A. “Signs” are for those who lack faith 
 
ILLUS – “I’m going to be a lawyer not a pastor!” 
 
1. It’s important to note that in the Bible, a sign was either a supernatural event which confirmed or proved what God was saying or it was something that reminded Israel of God’s power and presence. 
2. For instance, when God called Moses to deliver the nation of Israel from slavery in Egypt, Moses was concerned that the people would not believe that God had sent him. So, God gave Moses signs to bear witness that it was God who had called him. Moses was lacking faith! 
 
Exodus 4:8-9, If they will not believe you or heed the witness of the first sign, they may believe the witness of the last sign. But if they will not believe even these two signs or heed what you say, then you shall take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground; and the water which you take from the Nile will become blood on the dry ground. 
 
3. When God called Gideon to be a deliverer for Israel, he lacked faith, so he asked for a sign. 
 
Judges 6:17, So Gideon said to Him, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who speak with me.”

At this point in Exodus Pharaoh has finally relented and let the people of Israel go. The plagues have come to an end. God established the Passover so the Israelites would remember that God saved them from the condemnation of death and from the slavery and oppression in Egypt. 
 
 Being set free from Egypt, Israel began their journey through the wilderness. What’s interesting is that God did not lead them directly to the land of the Philistines, modern day Gaza, in what would have been a fairly straight journey to the Promised Land; a distance of perhaps 120 miles to the east. Instead, God led the people south, down the Sinai Peninsula, around by the way of the wilderness to the Sea. 
 
 This is certainly an amazing part of the story, because it seems that God led them straight into a trap. They would find themselves between a rock and a hard place; caught between the army of Egypt that came out to pursue them and the sea in front of them. 
 
 This is a major event in the history of Israel. It’s also a picture of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. There are also many spiritual lessons and personal applications as we understand what God was doing within Israel and what he desires to do within us. 
 
I. Let God Lead the Way 
 
 One of the first things to see from this story is that it was God who was leading Israel through the desert. 
 
 It appeared to the Egyptians that they were wandering aimlessly. 
 
 But God knew what He was doing, and He knows what He is doing in our lives as well. 
 
A. He leads by day and by night 
 
 The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night to give them light. This would continue for forty years, until they came into the Promised Land. 
 There is significance and meaning in God leading them by a cloud and by fire, but first we must recognize that he was always leading them. The question is whether they would follow with their heart. 
 One of the great causes of difficulties in people’s lives is that they only want God to lead them part of the time, but God wants to direct our lives all the time; both by day and by night. 
 In other words, don’t take a break from the wisdom of God’s Word.

1. In life, we are continually forced to make judgments. Is this person credible or trustworthy? Will this product live up to the manufacturer’s claims? 
2. In order to render a proper verdict, the evidence must be examined and evaluated. 
3. The same is true when it comes to matters of faith. 
4. There are reasons for faith and God expects us to examine and evaluate the evidence so that we may make the right decision. 
5. Tonight, we will study a defining moment in the life and ministry of our Savior, Jesus Christ, one which asks, “What say you?” 
 
Matthew 12:22-37 
 
I. Jesus Demands a Decision (22-29) 
 
• At this point, you could feel the tension in the air. 
• Three groups were present and each with differing views about the identity of Jesus. 
• For eleven of the twelve apostles, the matter was settled, Jesus is the Promised One, Israel’s Messiah. 
• Two other groups had witnessed and evaluated the same evidence. They had heard Jesus’ teachings, the authority and wisdom of His spoken words. 
• They also witnessed lepers cleansed, the blind gaining sight, the deaf able to hear, and the lame now walking beside them. 
• And moments earlier, a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, Jesus healed him too! (22) 
• The second group was hopeful but not sure, so they turned to the Pharisees for their opinion and asked, “This man cannot be the Son of David, can he?” (23) 
• The Pharisees would have nothing of it. Their minds were made up, their hearts were hardened, to them the verdict was in. They indignantly declared, “This man casts out demons only by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons.” (24) 
 
APPL – What say you? 
 
A. Son of David or ruler of demons? (22-24) 
1. “Son of David” is a Messianic title which harkens back to the promise that God gave to King David in 2 Samuel 7. 
 
2 Samuel 7:12-14, 16, When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me;… Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever. 
 
2. The second group’s question about Jesus being the Son of David was repugnant to the Pharisees for Jesus had confronted their man-made religious system and taught the people that entrance into the kingdom of God required a heart change, not the outward appearance of righteousness. 
3. The Pharisees wanted to call the shots and have a Messiah that would applaud them and affirm their burdensome, religious system. 
4. For the Pharisees, the words and miracles of Jesus were not credentials for being the King of the kingdom of God. These were the credentials of hell! 
 
APPL – So, Jesus pulled back the veil and revealed what the healing of the blind and mute demoniac really meant. 
 
B. Jesus is the strongest strongman (25-29) 
1. In verses 25-29, Jesus presented three arguments to refute the Pharisees’ verdict. 
2. First, to say that Jesus casted out demons by Beelzebul, which is another name for Satan, was illogical. 
a. Satan wants to build his kingdom, not destroy it. 
b. Why would Satan deliver a man who was already under his control? 
c. In essence, the Pharisees were saying that Satan was fighting against Satan when Jesus cast out demons. Their conclusion doesn’t make sense.

Pharaoh continued to harden his heart throughout the contests between the gods of Egypt and Jehovah, the Great I Am. Pharaoh continued to ask Israel to compromise, but Moses and Aaron refused to compromise, and Pharaoh continued to harden his heart against God. 
 
 God had given the Egyptians many warnings and many opportunities to recognize the power and preeminence of God, but they would not be changed. Finally, a day of judgment was given, and the final plague was to be released in the land of Egypt -- the death of the firstborn in every house in Egypt. 
 
 But God also gave a provision for them to be saved. If anyone would take the blood of a lamb and place it on the doorposts and lintel of their house, they would be saved from God’s judgment against Egypt. It would take faith to believe in God’s provision, but if they would believe and do as God instructed them to do, they would be saved, whether they were Hebrews or Egyptians. 
 
 This event would be remembered by the keeping of the Passover which God instructed them to keep each year at the first month of the Jewish year. Passover was kept so they could look back at God saving them from their slavery in Egypt. 
 
 But it’s also prophetic. It looks forward to the coming of the Son of Man, Jesus, who was the fulfillment of the Passover. He is the Lamb of God and His blood is the blood that must be applied to anyone who believes God for freedom from condemnation and the gift of eternal life. 
 
I. The Lamb is God’s Provision 
 
 God had warned the Egyptians as well as the Hebrews that He was going to bring about a great plague, the death of the first born, but He made a provision so that anyone who listened to God would be saved. 
 
 They were to take a lamb and kill it and then apply the blood of the lamb to the doorposts and the lintel of the house. 
 
 The death of the lamb would be God’s provision so that the angel of death that would go throughout Egypt would “Pass over” their house but would visit every house and bring death to the firstborn if they did not apply the blood of a lamb as God instructed them to do. 
 
 
 
A. Mark your calendar by this date 
 
 This was such a significant event in the history of Israel that they were to mark their calendars by it. 
 The first month of the Jewish year was the commemoration of Passover. The name, Nisan, was given to it later. 
 Later in Jewish history, however, the new year (called Rosh Hashanah), was celebrated at the beginning of the seventh month of the Jewish calendar. 
 There are many other interesting aspects of the Jewish calendar. They use lunar months and will occasionally add a 13th month (leap year) so that Nisan always comes in the spring after the barley harvest. 
 One of the greatest prophetic pictures from these verses, however, is that Jesus is the Lamb of God.

Growing up, I never wanted to work at a church. In fact, I didn’t even like going to church, let alone working at one. I thought it was boring and I didn’t understand any of the stuff that was being talked about. I wanted to be a baseball player. That seemed like a lot more fun…. 
 
1. I’m not sure I was the type of person some would have picked to grow up to work at a church. Some would say that it is unexpected that I ended up where I did. 
 
2. When God works in our lives, we so desperately want to know what it is that God is doing or where God is directing us. This is especially true during challenging times. God, where are you? God, what are you doing? God, are you even listening? I know there have been times in my life when I would love to have answers to these questions. I’m sure you do, too. 
 
3. And for so many people, they stop themselves short of participating in ministry or put a cap on possibilities to serve because they just don’t feel like they are ready. They don’t feel as thought they are good enough. 
4. But if there is one thing we learn from Scripture, it is this: God is at work in redeeming all things back to himself. God is on the move. God is doing things. 
 
5. A second thing that we learn from Scripture: God usually works in unusual ways. 
 
Judges 6:1-16 
 
Context 
1. The book of Judges consists of stories about local heroes within the nation of Israel who end up distinguishing themselves in battle with some of Israel’s ancient enemies, including the Canaanites, Midianites or Philistines. 
 
2. This is a period of time following the first two great leaders of Israel’s history (Moses & Joshua), but prior to the beginning of the monarch (King Saul). 
 
3. When we think of judges, we think of the people in robes who hand out edicts from trials or cases. They are the ones that dispense or dole out justice. The ancient judges or Israel did do some of that, but they were primarily charismatic military leaders who would often appear in Israel’s time of need to fight off invading groups. 
 
4. The sin cycle: (1) Israel sins; (2) punishment occurs; (3) Israel cries out for help; (4) God rescues; (5) Israel rejoice before falling back into sin.

Defining moments. In life there are moments which set the course and define the way for one’s life. From that defining moment on, things will never be the same again. 
2. Tonight, we will study a significant, yet often overlooked, defining moment in the life and ministry of our Savior, Jesus Christ, one which revealed who He is and who His enemies were. 
 
Matthew 12:1-21 
 
Context 
1. Last week, we studied the powerful and comforting invitation of Jesus from Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” 
2. God knows that all of humanity is burdened so He sent His Son to free us both from the burden of our sins as well as the burden of religiosity. 
3. One of the themes that we see running through the Gospel of Matthew as well as much of the Bible is the question, “How will you respond?” 
4. Because God so love the world, He sent His Son so that we might believe in Him and have everlasting life. God sent His Son so that question now is, “How will you respond to Jesus?” 
5. In Matthew 12, there are two distinct groups with completely different responses to Jesus. Jesus pointed to their hearts and revealed that there is where the question is truly answered. 
 
I. Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath (1-8) 
 
• The topic of the Sabbath was and is very central to the Jewish religion. 
• But what was meant to be a blessing became a burden, so Jesus confronted the problem to restore the Sabbath back to what God originally intended. 
 
A. The Sabbath was made for man 
1. Matthew 12 begins with the Pharisees accusing Jesus that His disciples were breaking the Sabbath because they had picked heads of grain and ate them while passing through the grain fields. (2) 
2. Jesus responded to their confrontation by confronting them. 
3. First, it is important to note that the Sabbath was given as a sign between God and the sons of Israel. 
 
Exodus 31:17, It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed. 
 
4. Next, we see that God meant the Sabbath to be a blessing for Israel. 
 
Mark 2:27, Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.” 
 
5. But the scribes and Pharisees had turned the Sabbath into a crushing burden, and defined Israel’s relationship to God according to whether they could carry this terrible man-defined burden. 
 
Matthew 23:4, They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.

6. Jesus referenced three passages from God’s Word to confront their ignorance of God’s Word and the error of their traditions. 
a. In 1 Samuel 21, David and his men ate the showbread which was reserved for the priests and were not condemned. (3-4) 
b. In Numbers 28:9-10, the priests broke on the Sabbath when they offer the prescribed sacrifices to the Lord and were not condemned. (5) 
c. Then Jesus quoted from Hosea 6:6 to show the Pharisees were condemning the innocent, ones God had not condemned.

Moses and Aaron came before Pharaoh with a message from Jehovah, God of the Hebrews, “Let my people go, that they may worship me in the wilderness.” 
 
 Pharaoh answered, “Who is Jehovah that I should obey his voice? I don’t know Jehovah and besides, I won’t let the people go.” In other words, he was determined, and in fact became hard of heart, so God demonstrated his power and brought great plagues upon the land. 
 
 We pick up the story in the plagues that God is pouring out on the Egyptians. First, Moses struck the Nile and the fish in the river died and it became foul and they could not drink of the water. 
 
Next, Aaron stretched out his hands over the waters and frogs came up and infested the land. There were frogs everywhere, but the magicians of Egypt did the same and Pharaoh was unimpressed. Although, to me this is interesting, If the magicians really wanted to show the power of their gods, they should have removed the frogs, but making more frogs? Me thinks somethings amiss. Right, and Pharaoh knows it, too. They have no power. 
 
Finally, God brought gnats out of the dust of the ground. Then a swarm of biting insects that were so bad that Pharaoh was finally willing to let the people go, but he wanted Israel to compromise. 
 
 Egypt is a type of, or a picture of, the world. Bringing Israel out of Egypt is in many ways a picture of God saving us from the slavery and oppression of the world and giving us eternal life in Christ. 
There are many lessons in this study because when we become a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, the world and the god of this age will press you to compromise your faith. 
 
 Sometimes, in everyday things, compromise is acceptable and even helpful. If we go on vacation and I want to go fishing and the family wants to go swimming, surely we can compromise. In business, give and take is often needed to order to make a business deal. 
 
 But in your Christian faith, you will find that the god of this age will pressure you to compromise and the result will be devastating. There is a time to take a stand in your faith and not to compromise. 
 
I. Go Farther in Your Faith 
 
 The swarm of insects was too much, they had been bitten and bothered and now Pharaoh calls for Moses and Aaron and tells them they can worship their God, but… they must stay in the land. 
 
 They can worship, but they must not leave Egypt. The comparisons to our faith are important to see. 
 
A. Leave the world behind 
 
 The moment you ask Jesus into your life, the enemy begins to work on getting you to compromise. 
 Pharaoh finally came to the point where he would allow the people of Israel to worship their God, but they must stay in the land of Egypt. 
 There’s the compromise. “Go ahead and believe in God if you want to, but don’t leave the world.” In other words, don’t change anything. Be the same kind of person you used to be when you were in the world.
