1. Our bodies to require rest. Without proper rest, our fragile frames will begin to shut down. 
2. The same is true spiritually. 
3. Each of us needs and even longs for rest for our souls. 
4. But where do we find rest, the kind of rest that our souls crave and require? 
5. Tonight, we will discover the answer by studying the words of our Savior, our Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ so that we may not only find rest but enter into it. 
 
Matthew 11:20-30 
Context 
1. In Matthew 11, two of the disciples of John the Baptist approached Jesus with a question from John, “Are You the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?” (11:3) 
2. Many who read this for the first time, shake their heads in disbelief. How could John the Baptist, the one who declared, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” question who Jesus is? 
3. But John was weary and discouraged. He had been in prison for over one year and wondered if he had made a mistake when he declared that Jesus is Messiah. 
4. Jesus reassured John by pointing to the miracles He had done, signs that confirmed Jesus is the Messiah; the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 
5. Jesus wanted John to be at rest, to have peace. He wants the same for us as well. 
 
Transition – Unfortunately, some people are never satisfied. 
 
I. Some People are Never Satisfied (20-27) 
 
A. It’s their way or the highway 
 
ILLUS – Dealing with difficult people during the holidays 
 
1. They’re like the generation that Jesus called out who witnessed the ministries of John the Baptist and Jesus and were not satisfied with either of them. 
 
Matthew 11:16-17, But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who call out to the other children, and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn. 
 
2. That generation wanted God to do things on their terms. They wanted a Messiah who would follow their agenda and bow down to their will. 
3. But Jesus did not come to dance to our tune. He expects us to dance to His tune. Meaning, Jesus expects us to follow Him! 
4. Then, in verses 20-24, Jesus intensified His tone by denouncing those cities where the majority of His miracles were performed. Why did He denounce Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum? 
5. “Because they did not repent.” (20). Jesus’ miracles confirmed His message, the Sermon on the Mount, that He is the Messiah, but they refused to change. 
6. They wanted to see signs and miracles, but it was never enough or good enough! 
 
Matthew 12:38-39, Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet” 
 
7. In fact, Jesus, who knows all because, as the Son of God, He knows what is and what could have been, declared that the wicked, idolatrous cities of Tyre, Sidon, and Sodom, would have repented if the miracles done by Jesus in Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum had been done within their city limits!

God called Moses to deliver the people of Israel from the slavery and oppression they were suffering in Egypt. He gave Moses powerful signs to demonstrate his power and convince the sons of Israel that he had met with God and God had sent him to be their deliverer. 
 
When Moses met with the Hebrew leaders and demonstrated the power of God they did believe that God had sent Moses, that He was concerned about them and that He had seen their affliction. The people then bowed low and worshipped. 
 
 Moses, and Aaron, his brother, then appeared before Pharaoh with the message God had given them, “Let my people go that they should celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.” 
 
 Some suggest this was a bit deceptive since God’s ultimate plan was to completely free the Hebrews, not just give them a long weekend of rest from their labors. But God instructed Moses to begin with this small request and thus the hardness of Pharaoh’s heart would be revealed in that he would not let them go for even such a small thing as going three days in the wilderness to celebrate a feast and worship God. 
 
 Pharaoh responded to Moses with a question that makes perfectly good sense, “Who is Jehovah that I should obey his voice? I don’t know this God Jehovah.” 
 
 That question is still being asked today, “Who is God that I should listen to His voice?” It is the most important question you will ever answer because it will determine the outcome of your life. If God created the heavens and the earth, we most certainly should want to know Him and listen to His voice. 
 
I. One Day Everyone Will Know Him 
 
 Pharaoh had never heard of Jehovah, though he had heard the names of more than 100 Egyptian gods. There were so many Egyptian gods you could hardly count them. They often had the body of a human and the head of either a human or some kind of creature. 
 
 Each of the gods had their own appearance and most of them imitated some aspect of creation. There was a lion, a jackal, a hawk, a crocodile, a cat, a frog, even flies. 
 
 There was Osiris, Isis, Set, Horus, Ra, Thoth, Anubis, Hathor, and on and on. The Egyptians believed that they themselves were the descendants of gods and superior to all other races on earth. 
 
 From the perspective of Pharaoh, the God of Israel could not have been very powerful if the people of Israel were slaves to the superior Egyptians. Therefore, Pharaoh’s response was reasonable, “Who is Jehovah that I should obey his voice? I do not know this God Jehovah. And besides, I will not let Israel go.” 
 
A. Creation itself reveals the glory of God 
 
 The heavens and the earth that God created declare the glory of God.

1. Expectations. One dictionary defined the term “expectation” as a “feeling or belief about how successful or good someone or something will be.” 
2. Spoken or unspoken, we all have expectations. 
3. It’s also true that we have certain “expectations” of God, that He will “be” a certain way or “act” a certain way. 
4. But problems arise when our expectations of God don’t match up with our experiences. For some, their faith is severely damaged, even shipwrecked. 
5. Is there an answer, a remedy, a solution so that our expectations of God line up with who God is regardless of our experiences? 
6. Tonight, we will discover the answer by looking a man who was the greatest prophet under the Old Covenant, John the Baptist, and how Jesus ministered to him when John’s expectations of Jesus did not line up with his experience. 
 
Matthew 11:1-19 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 10, Jesus selected twelve of His disciples to be His apostles. 
2. We noted two weeks ago that before the twelve could be His apostles, “those who are sent”, they first needed to be His disciples, “those who are taught.” 
3. Being a disciple is more than just being a student because it involves a wholehearted commitment to applying the teachings of Jesus to one’s life. 
4. Jesus also departed from that region of the Sea of Galilee to teach and preach in their cities. (11:1) 
5. It’s at this point that two of the disciples of John the Baptist approached Jesus with a question from John, “Are You the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?” (11:3) 
6. Many who read this for the first time, shake their heads in disbelief. How could John the Baptist, the one who declared, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” question who Jesus is? 
 
I. Our Lord is a Compassionate God (1-6) 
 
• Context is helpful. John was imprisoned by Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great. 
• According to Matthew 14:3-4, Herod Antipas put John in prison because John rebuked him for taking his brother’s wife, Herodias, to be his wife. 
• John had been in prison for more than a year. He was discouraged, disappointed, and questioned if he had made a mistake. If he was the messenger who went before the Messiah and Jesus was the Messiah, then why was he still in prison? 
• If Jesus was the Messiah, the One who would separate the “wheat from the chaff” and purge Israel of her sin, then why did Jesus minister to tax collectors and cast demons out of prostitutes? 
• Should they “look for someone else?” 
• We might expect Jesus to be disappointed in John or that He would reply with a sharp word of correction. 
• But here we see the heart of our Savior. He responded with compassion. In fact, throughout the Scripture we see that God comforts the discouraged. 
 
A. God comforts the discouraged 
1. We all know what discouragement looks like when our expectations aren’t met. 
2. John’s expectation of what the Messiah would do was different than what he was witnessing and experiencing. 
 
APPL – It’s easy for us to have unfulfilled expectations as well. Many people come to God thinking that God should do things this way or that way. 
• Jesus shocked the Jewish leaders when He touched lepers and ate with tax collectors and sinners. 
• Many people at one time or another have thought, “If I was the Messiah, I would do things this way…” 
• Verses 16-19 clearly paints that picture. Some complained that John was too strict and removed so they said he had a demon. Others complained that Jesus hung out with tax collectors and sinners, so they called him a glutton and a drunkard. 
• People expect God to respond to their expectations when they should trust in what God is doing instead. God won’t dance to our tune. We must let His song resonate in our hearts. 
3. There are many examples of great men who became discouraged at one time or another.

In Exodus chapter 4 Moses had an amazing encounter with God. He had been raised in Pharaoh’s home with education and privilege, and even tried to be Israel’s deliverer by his own power. He saw an Egyptian beating a fellow Hebrew and he struck down the Egyptian and buried him in the sand. But Pharaoh quickly found out and Moses had to run for his life. He then spent 40 years in the desert of Midian. 
 
 One day as Moses was pasturing his father-in-law’s flock he saw a burning bush. It was on fire but was not consumed. He turned aside to look, and behold, God called to him from the midst of the fire. 
 
 God called Moses to be the deliverer of Israel. “Go and gather the elders of Israel together and tell them that I am indeed concerned about them and what has been done to them in Egypt.” Then in verse 18 He said, “They will listen to what you say, though the king of Egypt will not listen except under compulsion.” 
 
 Moses was afraid and didn’t want to go so he gave God a series of excuses. And this is where the story applies to our lives. Many people do not move as God wants them to move or do what God wants them to do because of fear. 
 
 But God has an answer to fear. And when people start beating around the bush, pardon the pun, God confronts their excuses. Last chapter, Moses responded by saying, “Who am I that I should lead the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” God responded, “I will be with you.” In other words, deliverance for Israel does depend on who are, but on who I am and I will be with you. 
 
 Then Moses said, “I am going to the sons of Israel and when I say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ they will say to me, ‘What is His name?” What shall I say to them? God answered, “I am who I am, you shall say, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ This will be my memorial name to all generations.” 
 
 That is the key to what God wants us to apply to our lives as well. 
 
I. Do What God is Asking 
 Verse 1, Moses says, “What if they will not believe me, or listen to what I say?” 
 What’s interesting is that God already told Moses that they would listen. But Moses is afraid and tries to cover with excuses. 
 
A. God has a purpose for your life 
 
 God wants to do something with your life. He gives you a life to do something with it, to have a purpose and a meaning. Many people are afraid that their lives won’t amount to anything, but they’re also afraid to do anything about it. 
 
 There is no one who is insignificant in the kingdom of God. He has decided to use you to make a difference in other people’s lives. 
 Every one of us knows people who are hurting, who are oppressed, and who need the help of God in their lives. 
 Paul wrote that God has given us the privilege of reconciling people God…

Our choices define us. Good or bad, right or wrong, our choices are a revelation of who we are and what we are made of. 
2. This is especially true when it comes to Jesus. Who we say Jesus is defines our now and our eternal destiny. It’s the most important decision a person will ever make. 
3. Tonight, as we continue our study in Matthew’s Gospel, we will learn from our Savior’s perspective what it means when a person says, “I have decided to follow Jesus.” 
 
Matthew 10:24-42 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 10, Jesus selected twelve of His disciples to be His apostles. 
2. We noted last week that before they could be His apostles, “those who are sent”, they first needed to be His disciples, “those who are taught.” 
3. Being a disciple is more than just being a student for it involves a wholehearted commitment to applying the teachings of Jesus to one’s life. 
4. Before Jesus sent out the twelve, He gave them instructions because, as His official representatives, they must say what He would have them say and do what He would have them do. His authority rested on them. 
5. When we come to the verses that we are studying tonight, Jesus spelled out in greater detail what it means to be His disciple. 
6. What we will discover is that the Gospel is serious business because the consequences are eternal. 
7. Jesus wanted them and He also wants us to understand not only the cost of being a disciple of Jesus Christ, but also the blessings that come with being His disciple. 
 
I. Stand for the Truth (24-31) 
 
• In verse 24, Jesus began this section rather ominously when He said, “A disciple is not above his teacher.” 
• Meaning, if we look at how the world received Jesus, His teachings and His miracles, we will have insight into how the world will receive those who confess they are disciples of Christ. 
• Jesus went on to say, “It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher.” 
• If they called Jesus “Beelzebul”, which means “lord of the flies” (i.e. “Satan” or the “chief false god”), His disciples should not be surprised if they are called the same names and treated the same way. (25) 
• Once again, Jesus was confronting the religious order of the day because the scribes and Pharisees no longer stood for the truth nor were they concerned for the redemption of men’s souls. They were only concerned about their personal gain and power, meaning their ability to control others through religion. 
• Instead of acknowledging their sin and repenting, the scribes and Pharisees rejected God’s revelation that Jesus is the Messiah, the One who is True and speaks the truth, and called Him the father of lies, Satan. 
 
A. The truth is the truth will win 
1. Verse 26 is a great source of encouragement for Jesus declared, “Do not fear them”. Why? Because the truth is the truth will win! 
2. The enemy of our souls, Satan, is a liar and he uses lies as a weapon blind the minds of the unbelieving and shackle people with fear. 
3. But Jesus said, “Do not fear them” because the truth will be revealed and the truth will win. 
4. We know how the end will end! 
 
APPL – When light confronts darkness there will be tribulation. When truth confronts lies there will be tribulation. 
• So, stand firm on the truth and in the truth. 
• Where there is truth there is freedom! 
 
John 8:31-32, 36, So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 
 
2 Corinthians 10:3-5, For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ

When Jacob and his sons went to Egypt, there were 70 people counted among them. God was preserving them as a nation in Egypt and providing for them during a severe seven-year famine. 
 
 When we come to the book of Exodus, it’s 400 years later. They have grown from 70 to more than 2 million people. The favor which Pharaoh had shown when they first arrived in Egypt did not last. As other Pharaohs came to power, they became concerned of how Israel was growing so great in number. In fear, Pharaoh gave orders to enslave the Israelites and to make life difficult for them. But the more Israel suffered the more they grew in number. 
 
 God chose Moses to deliver the nation from the bondage of their slavery. Moses was a miracle baby. Pharaoh gave orders that every son who was born was to be thrown into the Nile, but Moses’ parents hid him in a wicker basket and set him amongst the reeds of the Nile River. They entrusted Moses to the mercy of God. 
 
Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby Moses in the basket and decided to raise him as her own. Moses was raised in Pharaoh’s home with all the privilege and accoutrements of wealth and status. When Moses had grown to be a man, he saw the hard labor of the Hebrews and it troubled him. 
 
One day he saw an Egyptian slave master beating a Hebrew. He looked this way and that, and when he saw no one, he struck down the Egyptian, killed him and hid him in the sand. 
 
But the matter became known and when Pharaoh heard of it he tried to kill Moses, so Moses fled into the desert and came to the land of Midian. There he became a shepherd and stayed in the desert 40 years. 
 
In Exodus 3, Moses had an encounter with God, but God has been working on him for more than forty years. It is here that we come to understand more of who God is and who God desires to be in our lives. 
 
I. Let God be the Fire in Your Heart 
 
 God appeared to Moses in a blazing fire. The bush was burning but was not consumed. Moses came closer to see how this could be, but there’s a message in it as well. 
 Sometimes I see people who are bored with life, there’s no fire. If you are filled with the fire of godly passion, you will not be bored. 
Romans 12:11, Never be lacking in zeal, but be fervent in spirit, serving the Lord. 
Illus – An organization I once knew was about to hire a leader and asked if I would interview this person and give an opinion. After I talked with him, I responded, “Here’s my concern, there’s no fire in the belly.” 
 
A. God is a non-consuming fire 
 
 When Israel was being led through the desert after they left Egypt, God used a pillar of fire to indicate His presence was there among them. 
 God’s presence in our lives can be represented by a fire that burns within us.

A sincere and authentic faith begins with a heart after God. How important is the heart? God said, “God sees not as man sees; men look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” God loves a good and faithful heart, but even hearts that are good need to be changed. This is the story of God transforming lives by transforming hearts. 
The church was born early in the book of Acts and by chapter ten, the church in Jerusalem was thriving. But then a great persecution arose against the church led by none other than the dreaded Saul of Tarsus. Followers of Jesus considered Saul the number one enemy of the Church. 
In an amazing turn of events, the greatest enemy of the church is blinded by light and he is literally knocked off his high horse. For three days he remained physically blind, but God was opening the eyes of his heart as he received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and forgiver of his sins. 
After this, the church throughout all Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, and being built up in the faith, it continued to increase. 
But in Chapter 10, God was about to do something shocking, at least it was shocking to them. Up to this point, the church was for the most part Jewish. Whenever the disciples would travel from city to city, they would bring the gospel of Jesus to the Jews. 
Peter was no doubt proud of his Jewish heritage and for good reason, God said Israel was His chosen people, they received the promises of God and they knew that the Jewish Messiah would bless the whole world. 
The Jews considered Gentiles unclean so they created rules and traditions that were not biblical. Jews would not eat with the Gentiles, nor would they eat food that was prepared by a Gentile. They would not invite them into their house, nor sit at a table with them. 
Jesus told the disciples to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth, but He didn’t mean for them to take the Gospel only to the Jews who might happen to live at the ends of the earth. God’s heart is for all people. Jesus said, “God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son…” Someone famously said, “The ground is level at the foot of the cross.” 
The story of Acts 10 is about two men, Cornelius and Peter. Cornelius is an officer of the army of Rome. He is a centurion from what was called the Italian cohort. Cornelius is an amazing man with a great heart. He sincerely seeks after God, he gives generously to the poor and he prays to God continually. 
He loves the light and God is about to give him more. Cornelius is hungry for the truth and he will receive more. He longs to be closer to God and he will receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. There is an interesting principle that Jesus taught in several places, “To everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance.” This was true for Cornelius. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is about to be offered to the Gentile world and it all begins with Cornelius. 
The story is also about Peter and what God must do to change his heart so the Gospel can be given to the gentiles. Some things need to change in Peter. God was even preparing Peter for this. As Peter was traveling through these parts he was called upon to heal two different Gentile people.

2. When Jesus entered our world, what did His presence mean? What did His very presence do? 
3. Tonight, we will discover what it means to have Jesus as our Light in a world filled with darkness. 
 
Matthew 9:27-34 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 8-9, Jesus was in the northern end of the Sea of Galilee by His town of Capernaum. 
2. He had just finished His Sermon on the Mount in which He told the people of Israel that to enter the kingdom of heaven, they must be transformed in the inner man, a transformation that happens when a person has placed his or her faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. 
3. After the Sermon on the Mount, we are told that the crowds were amazed by His teaching because “He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes”. (7:29) 
4. The events that unfolded next, demonstrated Jesus’ power and authority, His credentials for being Messiah. He spoke with authority. Now, Jesus revealed His power and authority over all creation in Matthew 8-9. 
5. Ten miracles were recorded in these chapters, each with powerful applications for our lives. We will focus on the last two miracles this evening. 
 
I. Jesus Makes the Blind See (27-31) 
 
• Immediately after Jairus’s daughter was brought back to life, we’re introduced to two blind men who had heard about Jesus and cried out to him as he was heading to a home nearby. 
• Their words are profound because they reveal these men had deep insight into the nature of Jesus. 
 
A. “Have mercy on us, Son of David” 
1. Notice their urgency for they repeatedly cried out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” 
2. Notice their request, for they asked for a touch of divine kindness, mercy. They knew Jesus owed them nothing but in humility they appealed to His benevolent, divine heart. 
 
 Psalm 51:17, A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. 
 
3. Notice as well, their perseverance for they would not let their blindness deter them from seeking an audience with Jesus. 
a. Probably, hand in hand, they listened to where the crowd was going and followed closely behind, begging for guidance where needed. 
b. Once Jesus arrived at His destination, they even followed Him right into the home! 
 
APPL – These two men are a great example for us all, for God delights in humble hearts that truly seek Him. 
• These blind men were like the leper who earnestly sought Jesus and asked to be cleansed. (8:2) 
• They were like the paralytic’s four friends, who would not let the crowds or a roof, for that matter, get in the way of their friend being healed by Jesus. (9:2) 
• They were like Jairus who ran through the crowds in search of Jesus for he knew that Jesus was his daughter’s only hope for survival. (9:18) 
• They were like the woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years, spent all her money and suffered much at the hands of many doctors without success. She knew if she could just touch the hem of His cloak, she would be healed. (9:20-21) 
• As I shared last week, don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of seeking Jesus. Seek Him, and don’t stop seeking Him. 
 
Psalm 16:8, I have set the LORD continually before me; 
because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 
 
4. Finally, notice their confession for they called Jesus the Son of David. 
a. This title was reserved for Messiah alone!

I. Bring All Your Burdens to Jesus (18-22) 
 
• When we come to this section of Matthew 9, it’s important to note that Matthew provided a condensed version of the events described here. 
• Both miracles are also recounted in Mark and Luke, and each of them provided more details to help fill in the blanks. So, I will refer to the other Gospels in our study tonight. 
 
A. Don’t let anyone or anything get in your way 
1. According to Mark and Luke, the synagogue official or ruler was named Jairus. (Mark 5:22) 
a. As a synagogue ruler, he was in charge of scheduling all events and teachers at the local synagogue. 
b. He wasn’t a teacher, but the position came with great honor and recognition. 
c. Jairus would have heard about Jesus, His teachings, miracles, and what people thought of Him, including the negative opinions of the scribes and Pharisees. 
2. We’re also told that the apple of Jairus’s eye was his twelve-year-old daughter, his only daughter! (Luke 8:42) 
a. It appears that she grew up like most girls, without any major medical issues. 
b. Then one day, it all changed. The Bible doesn’t state what she came down with, only that she was very sick and on the verge of death. 
c. I’m sure, like any parent, he tried everything to make his little girl well, but nothing worked. 
3. At this moment of crisis with time running out, Jairus, the honored and respected synagogue ruler, did not think about his status in the community. 
a. Nor did he care about the opinions of the scribes and Pharisees and what it might mean if he asked Jesus for help. 
b. No pride. No ego. All he cared about was the apple of his eye, his one and only little girl, so he frantically went looking for Jesus! 
 
APPL – When the bottom falls out and your life takes an unexpected turn, don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of running to Jesus. Bring all your burdens to Jesus. 
 
ILUS – A man’s response after the Sunday Night Service 
 
4. Notice Jairus’s posture when he came to Jesus. (18) 
a. Jairus not only asked Jesus to come to his home and lay His hand on her so that she would live, he bowed down before Jesus. 
b. This wasn’t only a sign of submission, it was a posture of worship, for that was what Jairus, the synagogue official was doing. As he pleaded with Jesus to come with him, he worshipped Jesus. 
c. Now the Jews rightly believed and taught that worship is reserved for God alone. Even Jesus taught that only God is worthy of worship.

We have reached the last chapter of the book of Genesis. At this point, Jacob has now passed away. He blessed and prophesied over his sons, then drew his legs into his bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people. Before he died, however, he charged his sons to bury him with his fathers in the land of Canaan in the cave that Abraham had purchased from the sons of Heth. Abraham and Sarah were buried there, so were Isaac and his wife Rebekah. Jacob’s wife Leah was buried there. 
 
 The rest of chapter 50 tells of the last years of Joseph’s life. I love Joseph because he is an example of a man of faith and steadfastness of character. Joseph’s example strengthens our faith and makes us want to hold onto our integrity the same way he did. Seeing the life of Joseph makes you want to run the race with endurance and to finish the race well. 
 
 When Abraham died, it says of him in Genesis 25:8, Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life. Abraham finished well. Though Joseph had many troubles and a difficult life, Joseph also finished well. 
 
 In these verses we will see the secrets of finishing well from Joseph’s life. 
 
I. God’s Way is a More Excellent Way 
 
 When the brothers came back to Egypt from burying their father in the land of Canaan, they said to themselves, “What if Joseph should bear a grudge against us and pay us back in full?” 
 
 They expected Joseph to be like many others, full of hurts and wounds that they hold onto and never let go of; bitter and unforgiving. 
 
 But that’s not Joseph. There is a more excellent way to live -- God’s way. 
1 Corinthians 12:31, Earnestly desire the greater gifts, but I will show you a still more excellent way. 
A. Decide now to live God’s way 
 
 It’s one thing to say that God’s way is a more excellent way, it’s another thing to say that that is the way you want to live your life. 
 
 There is a common way to live. It’s common because many people live that way, but it’s not God’s way. God’s ways are higher … 
 
Isaiah 55:7-9, Let the unrighteous man forsake his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord… “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” 
 No one would have blamed Joseph for bearing a grudge and paying the brothers back for all the wrong which they did to him. They deserved it. But Joseph lived differently. There is a more excellent way. 
1 Corinthians 3:1-3, I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?

We have reached the last chapter of the book of Genesis.  At this point, Jacob has now passed away. He blessed and prophesied over his sons, then drew his legs into his bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.  Before he died, however, he charged his sons to bury him with his fathers in the land of Canaan in the cave that Abraham had purchased from the sons of Heth. Abraham and Sarah were buried there, so were Isaac and his wife Rebekah. Jacob’s wife Leah was buried there.

Maintaining the “status quo”. Like my little girl, there are times when I just want to maintain the status quo because it’s safe, it’s familiar, it’s predictable, and it’s comfortable. 
2. But sometimes maintaining the status quo creates problems because doing so interferes with personal growth and maturity. 
3. It can even impact our relationship with God. When maintaining the status quo impacts our faith, we stagnate because we have put God in the “proverbial box”. 
4. And why do we put God in a box? Because we want Him to be predictable, safe, and submitted to our preferences and wishes. 
5. But God will not be boxed in by anyone! In fact, He loves us so much that He is committed to busting out of our boxes so that we may have a living, maturing, and even stretching relationship with Him; a relationship that requires a complete abandonment of all trust in self so that we may completely trust in Him. 
6. Tonight, we will discover how Jesus busted out of the boxes of those who were following Him so that they could have a living, maturing, and even stretching relationship with God through Jesus, our Savior. 
 
Matthew 9:1-17 
Context 
1. In Matthew 8-9, Jesus was in the northern end of the Sea of Galilee by His town of Capernaum. 
2. He had just finished His Sermon on the Mount in which He told the people of Israel that to enter the kingdom of heaven, they must be transformed in the inner man, a transformation that happens when a person has placed his or her faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. 
3. After the Sermon on the Mount, we are told that the crowds were amazed by His teaching because “He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes”. (7:29) 
4. The events that unfolded next, demonstrated Jesus’ power and authority. He had spoken as one having authority, now Jesus revealed His power and authority over all of creation in Matthew 8-9. 
5. There are ten miracles recorded in these chapters, each with powerful applications for our lives. We will focus on the sixth miracle this evening along with His calling of the author of this Gospel, Matthew. 
 
I. Jesus has Authority to Forgive Sins (1-8) 
 
• The scene that unfolds in Matthew 9 is one of a paralytic lying on a bed or a stretcher, who had four friends that believed that if they brought him to Jesus, He would heal their friend. 
• According to Luke 5, we’re told that they could not bring their friend to Jesus through the front door because the size of the crowd was so great. So, they climbed onto the roof, removed the ceiling tiles, and lowered their friend down by ropes right into the presence of Jesus. 
• Jesus then said three things to this man that amazed everyone in the house. And it’s here that we receive great insight into what God is doing for us all through Jesus, our Savior. 
 
A. “Take courage, My son” 
1. I am encouraged to hear how Jesus addressed the man. 
2. Jesus began by addressing the man directly to calm his troubled soul and to strengthen his heart. 
3. When Jesus said, “Take courage, My son”, He said two significant things. 
a. “My son” speaks of how much Jesus cared for him and loved him. It is how a father would speak to his child after they had fallen and gotten hurt. 
b. “Take courage” is a word which means, “There’s nothing to be afraid of, let not your heart be troubled.” 
 
APPL – Here again, we see the heart of God for the lost in Jesus’ words. Through Jesus, God was inaugurating a new dispensation or season of grace because of His love for us. God wants to change our lives with His love. He did not come to load us down with burdens. He came to set us free. 
 
Matthew 11:28-30, Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

As we near the end of the book of Genesis we come to the end of Jacob’s life. At this point he had lived 147 years and the years of his life had been unpleasant. As was common in that time and culture, he drew his children around him to give them a blessing and to give his heart to each of them. 
 
 The words of father are very important. Children need the blessing of their father, it will shape their character and strengthen them for life, or at least it should. 
 
 On September 11, 1985 Pete Rose got his 4,192nd career hit thus breaking the record of career hits held by Ty Cobb. Later a reporter asked what was going through his head as he stood on that base with the crowd going wild in the stadium for a full seven minutes. He responded, “I thought about my dad, that he was probably looking down from heaven and was proud of me.” At that moment, of all the things that could have been going through his mind, he thought of the approval of his dad. How powerful are the words of a father. 
 
 In Genesis 49, Jacob draws his children to speak words of prophecy over them. This is one of the first places in scripture where we see a prophetic word spoken. “Draw near,” he says to them, “that I may tell you what will befall you in the days to come.” 
 
 But the prophecies concerning them have everything to do with their character and how they lived their lives. In other words, there’s a connection between our past and our future. It’s also important to see, however, that you can make choices that will impact your future with God’s blessing. 
 
 There are great insights in these verses and in these prophecies. They contain many lessons for our lives today. 
 
I. How We Live Today Matters 
 
 In verse 2 Jacob said, “Gather together and hear, O sons of Jacob; and listen to Israel your father.” He uses both names, Jacob and Israel. As you look at his life you realize that he had struggled with being Jacob, the heel-snatcher, or Israel, governed by God. 
 
 In that culture it was common for the oldest to receive the greatest blessing, so he begins with Reuben, but it is not a blessing he gives. 
 
A. We’re writing our legacy now 
 
 Reuben was the first born, the beginning of Jacobs’s strength; preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power. 
 But he was as uncontrolled as water, Jacob said. In other words, everything he did was done for himself. He even mentions his great failure, that he defiled his own father’s bed by sleeping with his father’s concubine. 
 It was an attempt to usurp his father’s authority and to place himself in power, now Jacob is taking away his place as the first born. 
 Apparently, Reuben tried to overlook it, tried to minimize it; he never sought repentance, he never sought change. That’s it, that’s all; he passed over Reuben and moved on to speak of the other brothers.
