1. Whether you see a storm looming in the distance or you are suddenly blindsided by an unexpected turn of events, the reality is, in life we will encounter trials. 
2. In John 16:33, Jesus declared that, “In the world you have tribulation.” Now, one doesn’t need a degree in rocket science to know that what Jesus said is true! 
3. But there is great news! Jesus did not stop there for He concluded His statement with a victorious declaration, “but take courage; I have overcome the world.” 
4. Tonight, we are going to look at the remainder of Matthew 8 and discover that our Savior, Jesus Christ, is our Deliverer! Along the way, we will glean insights about His authority over the natural and spiritual realms so that when tribulation strikes, we may have peace in Him. 
1. In Matthew 8, Jesus was in the northern end of the Sea of Galilee by His town of Capernaum. 
2. He had just finished His Sermon on the Mount in which He told the people of Israel that to enter the kingdom of heaven, they must be transformed in the inner man, a transformation that happens when a person has placed his or her faith in Jesus Christ for salvation. 
3. After the Sermon on the Mount, we are told that the crowds were amazed by His teaching because “He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes”. (7:29) 
4. The events that unfolded next, demonstrated Jesus’ power and authority. He had spoken as one having authority, now Jesus revealed His power and authority over all of creation in Matthew 8-9. 
5. There are ten miracles recorded in these chapters, each with powerful applications for our lives. We will focus on the fourth and fifth this evening, one over nature and the other over the spiritual forces of darkness. 
 
I. Jesus has Authority over Life’s Storms (23-27) 
 
• In verses 23-27, we have one of the most famous accounts which reveals Jesus authority over nature. 
• Jesus commanded the disciples to get in the boat and cross the Sea of Galilee (18). 
• They followed His orders, right in the middle of God’s will, yet a storm arose suddenly. In fact, this storm was so great that in the Greek it literally means “great earthquake” or “great turbulence”. 
• Here, the disciples were given a lesson about the authority and power of Jesus. 
 
A. God has a purpose in the storms of life 
1. Many people have a very simple view of the things that happen in their lives. If anything goes wrong, then they conclude that they must have done something wrong to deserve it. 
2. Conversely, if anything good happens, they must have done something right. But the Bible helps us see that our heavenly Father has a greater purpose behind the storms that we face. 
3. Storms can be terrible and bring horrendous devastation. We even name storms so that we can distinguish one terrible event form another. 
So, what is God’s purpose in the storms of life? 
The Bible reveals there are three kinds of storms. 
 
• Correcting Storms: God uses correcting storms to “correct” the course of our lives. Jonah ran from God’s purpose and calling so God sent a storm along with a big fish! 
• Protecting Storms: God uses protecting storms to keep us from stumbling into something that could be detrimental to our faith and witness in Christ. The Apostle Paul is an example of this. In 2 Corinthians 12, we’re told that Paul was given a “thorn in the flesh” to keep him from exalting himself because of the revelations he had received. 
• Perfecting Storms: Matthew 8 is an example of a perfecting storm because the Lord allowed His disciples to go through a storm in order to increase their understanding of who Jesus is, which ultimately increased their faith and gave them peace. 
God promises to be with us in the storm 
1. Storms will impact all of us. God wants us to learn to walk by faith and not by our feelings. 
2. We can’t decide when storms will begin or when they will end. But we can decide how we will respond when they strike.

As we study through Genesis we’ve shifted our focus from Joseph to Joseph’s brothers. Clearly there were serious issues of character in the hearts of these brothers. The problem really stems from souls that were selfish and immature to the point of wanting to kill their brother, but deciding to sell him into slavery instead. They needed to be transformed in heart. 
 
 God was working on these brothers and He was using troubles and difficulties to do it, in this case, an extreme famine. 
 
God is committed to our spiritual condition. There is an old saying, “God loves you just the way you are, but loves you too much to let you stay that way.” 
 
 God will use even the storms of life, or the troubles and difficulties of life, to work out the character issues in your life. In other words, God is committed to transforming your heart. 
 
 But what does true change really look like? As we study the process of transformation in Joseph’s brothers, there is much we can apply to our lives as well. 
 
 
I. The Apple Doesn’t Fall Very Far 
 
 The old saying, “The apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree” tells us something about how we come to have some of the traits we have. 
 
 Of course we have physical traits from our father. I have my father’s chin, for example. But we get often get character traits as well. This gives us great insights into what was happening in the hearts of Joseph’s brothers. 
 
A. Like father like sons 
 
 As you read through the story of Genesis, you see something interesting. The name Jacob means heal-snatcher. In other words, he got what he wanted by catching people by the heel, he tripped them up. 
 He deceived and manipulated to get Esau’s birthright and blessing and then spent twenty years getting his uncle Laban’s goat; actually goats and sheep and most of the rest of the flocks. He and his uncle Laban, who was a manipulator extraordinaire himself, had quite a time taking advantage of each other. 
 Is it any wonder Jacob’s boys had serious character flaws? What’s the common thread? Favoring one’s self at the expense of others. That’s the very definition of being self-focused and self-centered. 
 When Joseph had the two dreams that he was going to rise above his brothers and that they would all bow down to him, that was too much, their pride couldn’t take it. 
 When the opportunity came they took hold of Joseph and sold him to Midianites traders who then sold him as a slave in Egypt. That is a serious character flaw! 
 You can see the character flaws from one generation to the next… 
Illus – Abraham told a half-lie about his wife being his sister. Later, Isaac said the exact same thing, but it wasn’t a half-lie it was a full lie. 
 You see the same principle in other places in scripture. 
2 Kings 17:14, However, they did not listen, they stiffened their neck like their fathers, who did not believe in the Lord their God. 
 God gives fathers to teach children about God and to be an example for them. It’s sad when this breaks down and becomes much less than what God desires. 
Illus – We played a video this week of a Palestinian Arab Muslim who is a supporter of Israel. He gave us insight into the nature of the problem in the Middle East. The problem is what happens in the homes of Arabs all through the region. They teach their children to hate Jews, so they become like their fathers. It just keeps going from one generation to another. 
Illus – When I was very young I admired my father and tried to please him. I helped him work on cars and dreamed of going fishing with him. But later I became angry and didn’t want to be like him at all. But then I was afraid that my anger might make me become like him even more. I knew I had to stop being angry. I knew also that I couldn’t drink alcohol because I was like him in that as well.

2. Once there is a diagnosis, the patient often feels isolated, vulnerable, and desperate. 
3. Tonight, we are going to look at the first seventeen verses of Matthew 8 and discover the heart of our Savior for those who feel isolated, vulnerable, and desperate because they need His healing touch. Along the way, we will also learn what it means to have a faith that pleases Jesus. 
 
Matthew 8:1-17 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 8, we find Jesus in the northern end of the Sea of Galilee by His hometown of Capernaum.

I. Jesus has the Authority to Make Us Clean 
 
• These verses record an amazing, yet touching event that has sparked much debate. 
• But Jesus explained the purpose behind what happened, so it’s essential for us to understand it too. 
• To understand what Jesus was referring to, we must first understand some things about leprosy. 
 
A. Leprosy is a picture of sin 
1. Leprosy was an incurable disease. Without divine intervention, those infected were sentenced to a lonely, torturous existence which ultimately led to their death. 
2. Some forms of leprosy begin with little nodules that ulcerate and eventually produce a foul discharge. The eyebrows and hair fall out. The hands and feet ulcerate and eventually the whole body becomes a mass of leprous growths. The vocal cords also become infected so that one’s voice becomes hoarse. This form of leprosy lasts approximately nine years and ends in mental decay, a coma, followed by death. 
Quote: “It’s doubtful that there is any disease that so completely reduces the human being in his body to so foul and hideous and repulsive a wreck.” (Dr. S. Lewis Johnson) 
3. In Leviticus 13, we see that leprosy is a picture of what sin does to a person. 
a. It goes deeper than the skin 3) 
b. It spreads (7) 
c. It defiles those infected (44-45) 
d. It isolates one from God and man (46) 
 Those infected were not permitted to attend any of the prescribed feasts or sacrifices. They lived outside of the camp and whenever they came upon another person, they had to move away and shout, “Unclean! Unclean!” 
e. Any defiled clothing was destroyed by fire (52) 
4. Because of their sin, the nation of Israel was pictured as being defiled with leprosy. 
 
Isaiah 1:5-6, Where will you be stricken again, as you continue in your rebellion? The whole head is sick and the whole heart is faint. From the sole of the foot even to the head there is nothing sound in it, only bruises, welts and raw wounds, not pressed out or bandaged, nor softened with oil. 
 
APPL – So leprosy is a picture of what sin has done to all of us. Spiritually speaking, we are all lepers in need of a supernatural intervention, a divine touch.

The story in Genesis now turns to Joseph’s brothers. Joseph had had two dreams that the brothers didn’t appreciate at all. The first was that they were all binding sheaves in the field, but Joseph’s sheaf stood upright while the sheaves of the brothers gathered around and bowed down to his sheaf. The second dream was that the sun, moon and eleven stars were bowing down to Joseph. 
 
 One day Jacob sent Joseph to check on the brothers as they were pasturing the flock a great distance away. When the brothers saw Joseph from a distance they plotted against him, saying, “Here comes that dreamer! Let's kill him and then we'll see what will becomes of his dreams!” So they seized him and threw him into a pit. 
 
While they were having lunch they saw a caravan of Midianites coming from Gilead on their way to Egypt. Judah then said to his brothers, “What profit is it for us to kill our brother? Come, let’s sell him as a slave.” They sold him for 20 pieces of silver. The Midianites took him to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, pharaoh’s officer; the captain of the bodyguard. 
 
God was with Joseph and he became a successful man in the house of his master, the Egyptian. But in spite of finding success in the house of Potiphar his master, Potiphar’s wife falsely accused him of trying to lie with her. Potiphar became angry and threw Joseph into prison. Though he finds success even in prison and is given the opportunity to interpret dreams for two of Pharaoh’s officials, he is forgotten for two more years while he remained in prison. 
 
 Finally when Pharaoh himself had a dream that could not be interpreted, Pharaoh’s official remembered that Joseph interprets dreams and he was brought from prison. He interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams in that there would be seven years of prosperity followed by seven years of famine. He then suggested administrative ways to prepare for the famine. Pharaoh decided to essentially make him the prime minister of Egypt to oversee such preparations. 
 
 That’s where the brothers come back into the story; when the famine ravages even the land of Canaan, Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt and sent the ten brothers to go there to purchase grain. 
 
 Spiritually, there is something important taking place. This story is about God working in the lives of these brothers. Clearly there are issues that need to be worked out of their character and hearts. Is there any question that God needed to work in men who are so filled with such anger and jealousy that they sell their own brother into slavery? 
 
 Jesus said that He would be with us to the end of the age. God with us means that He is committed to working in our lives the transformation He desires. He is also committed to working out of our lives those things that are obstacles to godly character. In other words, God isn’t finished with you yet. 
 
I. God Transforms Because He Loves 
 
 God is not through with these brothers. Why? Because in spite of their sinful immaturity, He loves them. The same is true for you and me. 
 
 God loves us and is committed to working out those things in our lives that are immature, selfish, sinful, and hurtful to others. 
 
A. God wants to set you free

2. A great prayer and wonderful request! So, after we pray for God’s will to be done, why are there times when we struggle with trusting that He is carrying out His will? 
3. Or from another angle, what’s our part or responsibility in following God and doing His will? 
4. During our study, we’re going to look at an interesting passage from Luke’s Gospel and discover important principles about faith so that we may learn to believe and not doubt our good heavenly Father. 
 
Luke 1:5-25 
 
I. God Knows Our Story (5-7) 
 
A. God knows what’s written on every page (5-6) 
1. Even when it appears that God is not there; He is watching; mindful of our ways. 
2. Israel was living in troubled times 
a. Herod the Great was their king 
• Herod was a descendant of Esau, therefore not a Jew! 
• He was chosen by the Roman senate because of the recommendation of Mark Antony. 
• He was known for his great accomplishments and for being small in stature. 
• But Herod was a wicked, cunning tyrant who killed one of his wives and many of his sons to protect his crown. 
b. Israel’s religious leaders were also corrupt with the high priesthood being controlled by a Sadducee named Annas. 
3. Before Moses died, God promised to raise up prophets to lead Israel in God’s ways. 
 
Deuteronomy 18:15, The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him. 
 
4. Problem: There had not been a prophet in Israel since Malachi! God had been silent for 400 years! 
a. Why? Israel wasn’t listening, so God was silent until they were ready to pay attention! 
b. What were the last words Israel heard? 
 
Malachi 4:5-6, Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. And he will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers 
 
5. In the midst of this mess, God took note of a godly couple from the tribe of Levi: 
a. Zacharias – “Yahweh remembers” 
b. Elizabeth – “My God is an oath” 
6. Like Noah in his day, Zacharias and Elizabeth stood out to the Lord as He surveyed the landscape of Israel. (6) 
a. “Righteous in the sight of God” 
b. “Walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord” 
c. They were not sinless, but they were a couple that was devoted to the Lord and to keeping His ways. 
 
APPL – It takes faith to live a godly life in a godless world! It takes a deep conviction to stand against the tide of this fallen world and for the things of God! 
 
ILLUS – David before Goliath or Elijah before the priests of Baal or Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego at the fiery furnace 
 
B. God knows the cry of our hearts (7) 
1. Zacharias and Elizabeth were right in the middle of God’s perfect will. 
2. Yet they were childless! 
a. One was considered cursed by God if childless; a death sentence because a person “lived on” through their children. 
b. It was also cause for public criticism and gossip! That’s why Elizabeth, after she realized she was pregnant, kept saying over and over again that the Lord had looked upon her with favor and had taken away her “disgrace among men”. (25)

1. Prior to their entrance into the Promised Land, Moses recited the terms of the Law to the nation of Israel. He concluded his remarks with a strong exhortation, a call to action, a single choice with two different outcomes. 
 
Deuteronomy 30:19, I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants 
 
2. In similar fashion, Jesus concluded His Sermon on the Mount with a strong exhortation, a call to action, a single choice with two definite, different outcomes, outcomes that impact this life and the life to come. 
3. Like Moses, Jesus wants us to make the right choice, to choose life, but He leaves the choice to each of us. 
4. Let’s discover the choice Jesus has set before us so that we may have a life that is rock solid, built on the Rock, our Savior, Jesus Christ. 
 
Matthew 7:13-29 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 5-7, we have the longest recorded sermon that Jesus ever gave called the Sermon on the Mount. 
2. In His message, Jesus explained how we may enter the kingdom of heaven. In Matthew 5:20, Jesus declared that a person had to be absolutely perfect to enter the kingdom of heaven. He said, “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” 
3. Now, the scribes and Pharisees were hailed as the standard of righteousness. But Jesus declared their standard fell short because they only focused on an external obedience to the Law. 
4. God’s looks deeper, into the heart! Our Father desires a true righteousness where obedience flows from a heart that is filled with faith because it has been transformed by His love and grace through Jesus. 
5. In Matthew 7:13-29, Jesus concluded His message with four vivid pictures to help us understand the choice He has set before each of us along with the corresponding consequences. 
 
I. Choose Life (13-20) 
 
• There are only two gates and two paths. One leads to life and the other leads to destruction. We must choose which one to live our lives by. 
 
A. Jesus is the only way that leads to life 
1. Jesus is the narrow gate and the narrow way. 
2. Here, Jesus literally commands us to enter through Him, to stay on His way, so that we may enter into true life, enjoying His presence now and forever. John recorded similar words. 
 
John 10:9, I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 
 
John 14:6, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. 
 
3. Jesus also said that few are those who find the narrow gate and way. His way is the way of faith, the way of self-denial, the way of true and everlasting life. As it did during His ministry, Jesus statement runs counter to the culture in which we live. 
a. The world says we should be all-inclusive and tolerant of every doctrine and every belief, even if they are mutually exclusive. 
b. This is what Jesus called the wide gate and the broad way. It is the popular path, the easy street, where you can bring all your baggage; your pride, selfishness, vanity, and sin and be accepted, even applauded for your fleshly ways. 
c. But what if the world is wrong? What if the majority has it backwards? Does popularity or ease confirm which way is right? 
 
Proverbs 14:12, There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. 
 
d. Or to put it another way, how do we know Jesus is the right way, the only way? 
e. Answer: The resurrection of Jesus confirms that He is the Messiah.

In these recent chapters in Genesis Joseph’s life takes a dramatic turn. It seemed that everything that could go wrong did go wrong. After receiving a dream from God that he would rise above his brothers, his brothers didn’t think much of Joseph’s dream and plotted to kill him. This was changed into an opportunity to make some money and he was sold as a slave instead. 
 
 He was sold to some Midianites travelers who took him to Egypt where he was purchased by Potiphar, captain of the bodyguard. He found great success in Potiphar’s house, but Potiphar’s wife tried to trap him into a liaison, but he refused. As a result, he was thrown into prison, his dreams seeming impossibly distant. 
 
 But here again, in prison, he found success and was trusted to oversee other prisoners. At one point he was told to oversee the king of Egypt’s chief cupbearer and chief baker who then each had dreams. Joseph was given the interpretation that the cupbearer would be restored, so Joseph asked that he remember to help him get out of prison. But he did not remember Joseph and there he remained in prison for two more years. 
 
 But then Pharaoh had a dream that no one could interpret, and then cupbearer remembered that Joseph interpreted dreams. When he appeared before Pharaoh he once again pointed toward God as the One to glorify and gave the interpretation – there would be seven years of prosperity followed by seven years of famine. He then suggested ways to prepare for the famine by storing up grain during the seven years of plenty. Pharaoh saw wisdom in Joseph and set him in a place of authority that he might prepare for the nation for the years of famine. 
 
 The king of Egypt also gave Joseph an Egyptian wife and she bore him two sons. It is in the naming of these two sons that we focus our study this morning, because as he reveals his heart in the naming of these boys we gain insight into our own lives as well. 
 
I. Blessed are They Who Can Forget 
 
 Joseph gives his first son the name ‘Manasseh’ which means forgetting. “God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.” 
 
A. Forgetting is part of healing 
 
 Verse 51 – Even here Joseph gives the glory to God and says that God has made him forget all his troubles. 
 There is something very right in understanding that this is part of a maturing relationship to God. 
 Does your relationship to God make any difference? Are you changed? Are you different? The more we understand who God is and who we are in light of that truth, the more we change and the more our character changes, becoming more godly. 
 In fact, Paul wrote that “Love does not take into account a wrong suffered.”

1. While locked in a prison cell, the Apostle Paul penned powerful words of encouragement and comfort for the church at Philippi when he declared, 
 
Philippians 4:19, And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 
 
2. How many us of believe these words are true words? 
3. Let me ask the question another way. When there is “more month than money”, how many of us believe these words are true? 
4. I believe God wants His people to be so close to Him, so intimate with Him, that in times of abundance or difficulty, we are at peace because we know our Father in heaven is on the throne and He is willing and able to meet all of our needs. It all comes down to what we believe in our hearts and the priorities of our hearts. 
5. In Matthew 6:19-34, Jesus revealed important principles to help us line up our hearts and priorities with God’s priorities, so that what matters most to God is of first importance to us. 
 
Matthew 6:19-34 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 5:20, Jesus declared that perfection is the standard for entrance into the kingdom of heaven. He said, “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” 
2. The scribes and Pharisees were hailed as the standard of righteousness. But Jesus declared their standard was not good enough because they only focused on an external obedience to the Law. 
3. God’s looks at the heart! He desires a true righteousness where obedience flows from a heart that is filled with faith because it has been transformed by His love and grace through Jesus. 
 
John Stott, “Christian righteousness is righteousness unlimited. It must be allowed to penetrate beyond our actions and words to our heart, mind and motives, and to master us even in those hidden, secret places.” 
 
4. In Matthew 6:19-34, Jesus addressed a person’s attitude about material wealth. 
5. He contrasted the motives of the Pharisees and the Gentiles with what He expects to see from His disciples because God’s grace has transformed their hearts. 
 
I. Seek First God’s Perspective on Life (19-23) 
 
• The way we view the stuff of the world is very important, especially in the day and age in which we live. 
• We have so much more stuff than they could have dreamed of and we take it all for granted. Solomon in all his grandeur never owned a microwave yet today it’s a common household item. 
• If Jesus wanted to change their perspective regarding the stuff of life, imagine how much more God wants to change our perspective. 
 
A. Set your heart on heaven 
1. Verse 19 literally means, “Do not treasure for yourselves treasures upon earth.” 
2. The question that comes out of this is, “Where is your heart?” In other words, what is it that you value, what is important to your life? 
3. Some people look at the stuff of the world to satisfy their longings and desires. Other people look to the stuff of the world for their security or use them as status symbols. 
4. Either way, Jesus pointed out the trouble with such a perspective. Moths and rust destroy, and thieves break in and steal. 
 
ILLUS – Speaking to a man who lived through hurricane Katrina 
 
APPL – Don’t put your heart in those things. They won’t satisfy your soul and they won’t give you security. 
• Treasure for yourselves treasures in heaven, for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Your heart will always follow what you treasure! 
• If moths can destroy your god, you have the wrong god! If rust can destroy your god, you have the wrong god! If thieves can steal your god, you have the wrong god!

When you think of Loyalty, who or what comes to mind? 
For me, the Armed Forces come to mind - 
• Loyalty defines our Allegiance - US Army

• Once a Marine, always a Marine - US Marine Corps 
• We are loyal and accountable to the public trust - US Coast Guard 
• Loyalty. Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. Constitution, your unit and other Soldiers - US National Guard 
We’re going to talk about loyalty in the passage today…and what God would have us apply to our lives from it. 
Because David learns a lesson on loyalty the hard way…that loyalty is very shallow… 
Who can you name without hesitation are your loyal friends? More importantly, who would have you on their list as a loyal friend? 
• David is leading a group of 600 men and is hiding in the desert from King Saul who wants to destroy him. 
• While this is going on the Philistine Army is looting the farmer’s threshing floors and stealing their food. 
• Threshing floors are the last phase of the harvest where… 
• You might ask, where was King Saul - wasn’t it his responsibility to protect these folks? 
I. David Inquires of the Lord 
• David hears whats going on and these are his people - he asks God if he can go and do something to help them… 
• Note David “inquires of the Lord” throughout the text - a lesson for another day - but don’t miss his example of seeking the Lord for direction. Do we do that routinely? 
Jeremiah 29:11; For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 
A. God protects us in the midst of resistance 
• God says to go but David’s men are afraid - Why? 
• 600 vs Philistine Army & King Saul 
• David inquires of the Lord again and God tells him to go - that “I will give the Philistines into your hand” 
• The lesson here is that God ministers to our resistance - trust Him. 
Psalm 32:7; You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. 
• David attacked the Philistines and won. 
• God’s wisdom here is again greater than ours. 
Illus - Pharaoh chased the children of Israel to the Red Sea… 
Testimony - Philadelphia family move… 
B. Our adversaries have no power 
• Saul gets excited about the possibility of trapping David, surprising him, destroying him. 
• David knew what Saul had planned. 
Psalm 138:7; Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me.

This past week Sherri and I attended the Oregon Calvary Chapel Pastors Conference…

The basics of the faith - our walk should be louder than our talk…As you hear the scripture references today, make a note as to what pleases God - are you growing spiritually in order to prayerfully thank Him for these things in your life? 
Paul’s letter in a nutshell is a review about Christian living. Regardless of where you are in your journey, this passage speaks about the flesh fighting back to return to the old life. 
Paul is writing this letter to the church at Colossae. He didn’t plant this church - he had not even been in that city. The church was thriving, their faith was well known and they were constantly bearing fruit and increasing. 
 
Why would Paul write this letter? Because Epaphras came to him with news that false teachers had come into the church. 
What we’ve learned about Paul in recent messages is that he tells it like it is - he confronts in love - he fights for the faith - he needed to lay down a strong foundation of the truth here. 
So once again not just a cool story for knowledge sake, but he is speaking directly to us - to keep growing in our relationship to Christ and maturity of faith. 
In chapter 3, Paul speaks of the practical transformation of putting off the old and putting on the new. His point is that spiritual transformation is of great value against fleshly indulgence, “Keep seeking the things above… Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.” 
 
I. New Life Hidden with Christ 
When you read these verses it’s not as simple as changing the clothes or wardrobe of your life - replacing the old with the new. 
Little by little God helps us peel away the old self and replace it with new.

God sends us His Word - He wants us to be wealthy spiritually, be blessed in worship, verse by verse to be filled and purpose to FINISH WELL. 
• We need a spiritual plan - and the discipline to stick with it. 
Listen to what Christian Author, Eugene Peterson, has to say in his book, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction… 
• For those of us who have been Christians for awhile you know names or faces of those who started well - - but now they are miles away. 
• Or started well and stopped growing… 
John 15:2, 4; Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 
• Are you on track to finish well?

1. A “Show-off” is defined as a person “who deliberately behaves in such a way as to attract attention.” 
 
ILLUS – Trying to impress my youth group while roller-skating! 
2. Often the only person who is impressed by a “show-off” is the person who is trying to show off! 
3. What does God think of “show-offs”? Is He impressed? 
4. In Matthew 6:1-18, we will discover important principles for living before God because what matters most in life is what God sees in the secret place of our hearts. 
 
Matthew 6:1-18 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 5:20, Jesus declared that perfection is the standard for entrance into the kingdom of heaven. He said, “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” 
2. The scribes and Pharisees were hailed as the standard of righteousness. But Jesus declared their standard was not good enough because they only focused on an external obedience to the Law. 
3. God’s looks at the heart! He desires a true righteousness where obedience flows from a heart that is filled with faith because it has been transformed by His love and grace through Jesus. 
 
John Stott, “Christian righteousness is righteousness unlimited. It must be allowed to penetrate beyond our actions and words to our heart, mind and motives, and to master us even in those hidden, secret places.” 
 
4. In Matthew 6:1-18, Jesus addressed three common areas of religious practice for the Jews, almsgiving (giving to the poor), prayer, and fasting. 
5. He contrasted the motives of the Pharisees with what He expects to see from His disciples because God’s grace has transformed their hearts. 
 
I. Seek God’s Approval Not Man’s (1-4, 16-18) 
 
• The first verse immediately grabs our attention because Jesus spoke directly about our motives. 
• He warned, “Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them…” 
• Now, in Matthew 5, Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men that they may glorify your Father in heaven.” 
• Was Jesus contradicting Himself? No! 
• In Matthew 5, Jesus was declaring that if God has made a difference in your life, then live in such a way that people may see the difference and glorify your heavenly Father. 
• Here, Jesus was saying, “Don’t do good things just to be noticed by men. That’s the wrong motive. Don’t be a “show-off”! 
A. When you give, don’t toot your own horn (1-4) 
1. “Almsgiving” is an act of charity, where someone meets the needs of another. This can be done by giving money, but it can also involve giving one’s time, talents, or expertise. 
2. Jesus did not object to giving to the poor. He assumed His disciples would be generous to those in need just as their heavenly Father has been generous to meet their needs. That’s why He said, “when you give”. 
3. Rather, Jesus objected to the way the Pharisees made a “big show” of giving to the poor. He warned that they had their reward, a temporal one from men, not from God. 
4. He called them “hypocrites” because they drew public attention to their good deeds (i.e. “sounded a trumpet”). The word hypocrite was used three times in this passage. In the Greek, it means “to be an actor”. To treat the world like it’s your stage so you may play your part.

5. Jesus called out the Pharisees because they appeared concerned for the poor, when in fact, they used religion to cover their true motives, their desire to receive the praise of men. 
 
Warren Wiersbe, “A hypocrite is not a person who falls short of his high ideals, or who occasionally sins, because all of us experience these failures. A hypocrite deliberately uses religion to cover up his sins and promote his own gains… hypocrisy robs us of reality in Christian living.”

Our study in Genesis now shifts to Joseph, Jacob’s favorite son. He was the firstborn of Rachel, the woman he had fallen in love with when he first came to Haran seeking a wife. 
 
 Joseph had two separate dreams that didn’t require much insight to understand. The first dream was that his sheaf stood upright while those of the brothers bowed down. The second dream was that the sun and the moon and eleven stars all bowed down to him. Both dreams meant that Joseph would rise above his brothers, but the second dream meant that he would rise even above his father Jacob as well. 
 
 It would be fair to say that the rest of the family didn’t interpret Joseph’s dreams with the same excitement that Joseph did. In fact, they were jealous and angry with him. 
 
At one point, Jacob sent Joseph to check on his older brothers who were tending flocks a good distance away. At first, they thought they would kill him, but the oldest brother, Reuben, insisted they not harm the boy; they should throw him into a cistern and let him die on his own. Reuben was intending to come back secretly and rescue him. But while Reuben was away, the rest of them saw some Ishmaelite traders, Midianites, and decided to sell Joseph as a slave. They sold him for twenty pieces of silver. The traders brought him to Egypt where he was again sold as a slave. 
 
 In Egypt, he was purchased by Potiphar, an officer for Pharaoh. But the hand of the Lord was on Joseph. Soon he oversaw Potiphar’s estate and became overseer of all he owned. Again, tragedy struck, however, when he was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife. And that’s where we pick up our story. 
 
 Joseph is one of the great men of the bible because he faced terrible and unjust circumstances and yet demonstrated the character of a powerful man of integrity. 
 
 There are many lessons from Joseph’s life. All one of us have walked through difficult circumstances and there are more trials ahead. In these verses we understand how to walk through difficult times with integrity of faith. 
 
I. Hold on to Your Integrity 
 
 Joseph could have decided that because life had given him a bad turn he might as well give up. He could have said in his heart, “If this is the way you’re going to treat me, Lord, then I give up trusting in You.” But he didn’t. 
 
 Job is a supreme example of suffering, even undeservedly. At one point, Job’s wife challenged him, saying, “Do you still hold on to your integrity? Curse God and die!” 
 
 Job responded, “You speak as one of the foolish women. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not adversity?” Job held on to his integrity and Joseph did as well. 
 
A. Don’t repay evil for evil 
 
 Joseph could have spent the rest of his life plotting revenge. Some might even suggest that would be the right thing to do; after all, the betrayal of his brothers deserved revenge! 
 But the right thing to do was to walk in faith, trusting God that He is able to bring justice. 
 
Romans 12:19-21, Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.

Last week we left Jacob after he had worked for his uncle Laban for 20 years and received wives and children and many flocks. God told him to go back to the land of his fathers and that He would be with him. 
 
He sent word to his brother Esau that he was on the way, but then heard his servants that Esau was coming out to meet him and 400 men were with him. Fortunately, this part of the story ended well as in turned out to be a touching reunion. 
 
 But upon entering the land he was called to, he didn’t go to Bethel where he had the dream of a ladder or stairway extending from earth to heaven. He woke up and said, “God is in this place and I didn’t know it. How awesome is this place, this is the house of God, this is the gate of heaven!” 
 
Instead of going to Bethel, he went to Succoth and even built a house there, though God had called him to live in tents as a sojourner in that land. Later, he pitched his tent near Shechem, a worldly city, and even bought some land there. 
 
 And that’s when things took a turn for the worse. Dinah, Jacob’s daughter went into town to make some friends and a young man, also named Shechem, found her and forced himself on her. Shechem’s father came to Jacob asking for Dinah to given in marriage to Shechem. 
 
However, when her brothers heard what happened they convinced the men of the city to get circumcised and then on the third day when they were in pain, Simeon and Levi came to the city and destroyed every man and plundered the town, talking everything of value. 
 
 Jacob was greatly troubled at what they had done and he said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble by making me to odious among the people of this land.” 
 
 And that’s where we start our study today. The flesh stinks! Wouldn’t it be great if we smelled like the great outdoors? But no, the flesh stinketh. Why? To make it clear that we need help! Here God speaks to Jacob and brings the help he needs; here are lessons we all need. 
 
I. Get to the House of God 
 
 Verse 1, “Get up and go to Bethel, and live there” God said to Jacob. That was the place where God revealed Himself to Jacob and showed him a ladder from earth to heaven; and God blessed him there. 
 
 It was also the place that Jacob, in awe of God’s presence, said was God’s house, and that there he would build an altar. 
 
A. Now stay there 
 
 It’s absolutely vital that we see the words, “and live there!” 
 We are the ones that make a mess of our lives, but God makes it so clear what we are to do, get to the house of God and stay there! 
Proverbs 18:10, The name of the Lord is a high tower, the righteous run into it and are saved. 
 Jacob had told God that he would come back to that place, yet he had been back in the land for 8-10 years. He wasn’t living in the center of God’s will at all; he had pitched his tent toward a worldly place and even bought land. He was getting comfortable in the wrong place!

Last week we left Jacob after he had worked for his uncle Laban for 20 years and received wives and children and many flocks. God told him to go back to the land of his fathers and that He would be with him. 

He sent word to his brother Esau that he was on the way, but then heard his servants that Esau was coming out to meet him and 400 men were with him. Fortunately, this part of the story ended well as in turned out to be a touching reunion. 

 But upon entering the land he was called to, he didn’t go to Bethel where he had the dream of a ladder or stairway extending from earth to heaven. He woke up and said, “God is in this place and I didn’t know it. How awesome is this place, this is the house of God, this is the gate of heaven!”
