We all know the emotions that consume us, the thoughts that race through our minds when we’ve been wronged. 
2. When wronged, what thoughts have filled your mind? What words have come out of your mouth? What actions have you taken? How do you respond to your enemies? 
3. In Matthew 5:38-48, Jesus explained what He expects from His disciples when they’re wronged so that love wins! 
 
Matthew 5:38-48 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 5:20, Jesus declared that perfection is the standard for entrance into the kingdom of heaven. He said, “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” 
2. The scribes and Pharisees were hailed as the standard of righteousness. But Jesus said their standard was not good enough because they only focused on an external obedience to the Law. 
3. God’s standard examines the heart! God desires true righteousness where obedience flows from a heart that is filled with faith because it has been transformed by His love and grace through Jesus. 
4. Now we come to what has been called the highest point of the Sermon on the Mount; verses that are the most admired and most resented because they challenge us to love when wronged. How do we love when wronged? 
 
I. Seek the Highest Good (38-42) 
 
• In verse 38, Jesus quoted from Leviticus 24, regarding the legal recourse a victim had against someone who injured them. 
 
Leviticus 24:19-20, If a man injures his neighbor, just as he has done, so it shall be done to him: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; just as he has injured a man, so it shall be inflicted on him. 
 
• This is the called “Law of Retaliation”, lex talionis. 
• This and other commands were given to help Israel’s judges render just judgments. 
• The goal was to protect the innocent and ensure “the punishment fits the crime”. 
• “The Law of Retaliation” also prohibited taking the “law into your own hands”; personal revenge. 
• Jesus confronted the scribes and Pharisees because they wrongly applied the “Law of Retribution” to personal relationships to justify personal revenge. 
 
A. Do not seek your own revenge 
1. The scribes and Pharisees should have known personal revenge was forbidden in their Law. 
 
Leviticus 19:18, You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people… I am the LORD. 
 
2. Jesus elevated the standard in verse 39 when He said, “do not resist him who is evil”. 
a. “Resist” means to “oppose” or “to set oneself against someone or something”. 
b. Here, “evil” means a person who is evil; an “evil one”, not Satan or a “concept” of evil. 
c. What was Jesus teaching? Jesus was not commanding us to sit by while we or a loved one is threatened. Self-defense is permitted to subdue the one who seeks to harm us until the authorities have arrived. 
3. In verses 39-42, Jesus provided four real-life scenarios to clarify His point. 
a. If an evil person slaps you on the cheek, turn the other cheek. (39) In that culture, getting slapped on the cheek was the highest form of insult and was punishable by a very heavy fine. 
 
ILLUS – Today, in many Arab cultures, the most extreme insult is having someone throw their shoe at you. 
 
APPL – To turn the other cheek does not mean that we forfeit the right to call out the injustice and seek an apology. Notice how Jesus responded when struck by an officer of the high priest. 
 
John 18:23, Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” 
APPL – It means that we must not exchange insult for insult. Don’t add fuel to the fire. Seek the highest good!

Last week in our study, Jacob had to leave his mother, whom he dearly loved, his father whom he had deceived, and his brother who wanted to kill him. 
 
Because of his mother Rebekah’s influence, Isaac sent Jacob some 500 miles away, to Haran, to her brother Laban. It was there Jacob was to find a wife amongst her relatives. 
 
Jacob was on the run because all around him he created heartbreak and conflict. All his relationships were broken. On the way he had an encounter with God. He had a dream where he saw a ladder or stairway from earth to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it. God then gave him the blessings of Abraham and Isaac. When he awoke he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I didn’t know it. How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” And he called that place Bethel – the house of God. 
 
 When he arrived in Haran, he met Rachel and her father Laban; he fell in love with Rachel and agreed to work seven years for her hand in marriage since he had no dowry. 
 
Many see some poetic justice when Jacob met Laban. The heel snatcher meets the manipulator. After Jacob worked seven years for Rachel, Laban did some serious conniving of his own and put his older daughter, Leah, in Jacob’s tent instead of Rachel on their wedding night! He then must work another seven years to get Rachel, the one he truly loved. 
 
Then, in a turnabout of manipulation, Jacob agreed to work several more years if he could have the goats of the flock that were spotted or speckled and the lambs that were black. He then created a breeding program so that most of the goats were born spotted or speckled and the lambs were born black. Thus, he ended up with most of what Laban had. 
 
 When we come to Genesis 32, twenty years have passed. God finally spoke to Jacob and told him to go back to the land of his fathers and that God would be with him. 
 
But then a problem arises – a very big problem; his brother Esau. He sent word to Esau that he was coming, and his servants returned with the news, “Esau is coming out to meet you and has 400 men with him.” Jacob interprets that as a sign of great danger. 400 men is not a welcoming party, it’s an army. 
 
 He divided his company into two groups; if one is attacked the other could flee. He sent gifts ahead of him in the hope of appeasing Esau. He sent his wives and children across the River Jabbock. Finally, he was alone, and that night the angel of the Lord came to Jacob, took hold of him and wrestled with him all night long. This is where the scripture reveals powerful insights for our lives as well. 
 
I. We are in the Process of Becoming 
 
 Jacob was given that name because he had hold of his brother’s heel as he was being born. Unfortunately, he lived by the meaning of that name all his life. 
 
 It’s time to change. It’s time to change that name, but first, God confronts Jacob by striving, wrestling, and contending with him. 
 
 God brought this crisis for the purpose of transforming him. He can’t go back to Laban and in front of him is his brother with 400 men. 
 
 But first, Jacob must learn to stop relying on his own strength, his clever heel snatching. He must learn that God will contend with those who contend against him; that God will be the blessor of his life; but he must cling to God and realize that God will wrestle with him, God will contend with him, if he must.

1. Promises. People make promises and also break promises. 
 
ILLUS – 1 Million Dollars or a Rich Man’s Daughter? 
 
2. Our words reveal much about our character and faith. As Christians, we’re called to a higher standard because we represent Jesus Christ to the world. 
3. In Matthew 5:33-37, Jesus explained what God expects from us when it comes to keeping our promises. 
Matthew 5:33-37 
Context 
1. In Matthew 5:1-20, Jesus declared the standard for being His disciple and entrance into the kingdom of heaven. 
2. That standard is perfection. He said in Matthew 5:20, “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” 
3. That was a radical statement. In that day, the scribes and Pharisees were hailed as the standard of righteousness. 
4. But Jesus exploded their world view and said their standard was not good enough because they only stressed an external obedience to the Law. God has a higher standard; one that looks at the heart! 
5. God desires true righteousness where obedience flows from a heart that is filled with faith because it has been transformed by His love and grace through Jesus. 
6. In verses 33-37, Jesus explored what’s in a person’s heart by examining their words, again raising the standard. What did His teaching reveal? 
 
I. What You Say Matters (33-36) 
 
• Words can give hope and words can bring despair. 
• Words can create vision and also bring confusion. 
 
Proverbs 18:21, Death and life are in the power of the tongue 
 
A. Your words reveal what’s in your heart 
 
Luke 6:45, The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart. 
 
1. If we have godly character, then godly words will come from our lips. 
2. If character is lacking, then we all know what can come out of a person’s mouth. 
 
APPL – And we must not think that things will get better as we wait for the return of Jesus because the Apostle Paul declared that the opposite will be true… 
 
2 Timothy 3:1-5, But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. 
ILLUS - In their book “The Day America Told the Truth,” authors James Patterson and Peter Kim revealed that 91 percent of Americans lie on a daily basis. 
APPL – In light of this, we must not let the world be our guide or standard when it comes to our character, words, or actions. Our Father in heaven knows what is best for us and His standard brings life to our lives. 
 
Transition – What does God desire for us? 
 
 B. God desires truth in your heart 
1. In verse 33, Jesus said, “Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.’ 
2. Jesus was not quoting from one specific Old Testament passage but was summarizing different sections from the Law of Moses regarding the making and keeping of oaths. 
 
Leviticus 19:12, You shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the LORD. 
 
Deuteronomy 23:21, When you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for it would be sin in you, and the LORD your God will surely require it of you.

Genesis 28 is a lesson in transformation. The story centers on Jacob. He was the second born of twins, and as he was being born, he had hold of his brother Esau’s heel, so they called him “heel snatcher,” or in other words, supplanter, one who trips people by catching them by the heel. 
 
 Unfortunately, he lived up to his name. When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents. One day when Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished; and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have some of that red stew there, for I am famished.” But Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.” 
 
 Now, it’s Esau’s bad here also, because he didn’t value his birthright and sold it far too easily. His birthright for a bowl of stew? Really? Jacob took advantage of Esau’s hunger; he caught him by the heel, you might say, and took his birthright. 
 
 Then later, when their mother, Rebekah, overheard Isaac plotting to give the blessing that goes with that birthright to Esau, she hatched a plan so that Jacob would deceive Isaac into giving the blessing to him instead. 
 
 When Esau discovered they had deceived Isaac and that Jacob had received Isaac’s blessing, he became enraged and made it known that as soon as Isaac had passed away, he would kill his brother Jacob. 
 
 That’s where we pick up our story in Genesis 28. Rebekah knows Esau intends to kill Jacob, so she used her influence as a wife to convince Isaac to send Jacob away that he might find a wife amongst her relatives 500 miles away in Haran. A perfectly rational explanation; a great cover for why Jacob must run for his life. 
 
 Jacob, the supplanter, the heel snatcher, leaves behind the inheritance he took from his brother; he leaves his home, and his family with nothing. All his conniving and heel catching has caught up with him. What he needs, what anyone needs who has been living by their own clever means, is an encounter with God. That is the key to transformation and that is the lesson from this chapter. 
 
I. Running from Troubles Doesn’t Work 
 
 Jacob is on the run from Esau, but in reality, it’s God he’s been running from for a long time. 
 
 Abraham was called the friend of God, Isaac was instructed by God, but Jacob has never known God for himself, and the results are clearly seen in his life. 
 
 There’s an old saying; “God has no grandchildren.” It means that each person must have his own relationship to God. You can’t ride on the relationship your spouse has with God, or your father or your mother, each person must have their own relationship to God. 
 
A. We must come to the end of ourselves 
 
 Jacob’s cunning was finally catching up to him. 
 The consequences of what was in his heart were chasing him, and he was on the run. 
 He had to leave the mother he loved, he deceived his father, and his brother wants to kill him. In other words, conflict and heartbreak was all around him and he didn’t have the character to resolve anything, instead he kept making it worse.

 L-U-S-T. We live in a world that continually entices us to lust.

2. Is it possible to experience victory over lust? 
3. In Matthew 5:27-30, Jesus explained why we need to be careful with our little eyes in order to experience His victory over lust.

Context

I. Marriage is a Gift from God (27-28) 
 
Proverbs 18:22, He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD. 
 
• According to the first two chapters in Genesis, God’s design for marriage is that a man and woman would enter into a marriage covenant and, within the confines of marriage, experience a spiritual, emotional, and physical union that is so sacred, so secure, and so satisfying that no other human relationship equals it. 
 
Genesis 2:24-25, For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. 
 
• God also ordained marriage to serve as the foundation upon which healthy families and, by extension, healthy societies are built. 
• In verse 27, Jesus quoted from Exodus 20:14, the seventh commandment, “You shall not commit adultery.” Why did God give this command? 
A. Adultery destroys God’s gift 
1. “Adultery” is the violation of the marriage covenant. 
2. It is such a serious violation of the marriage covenant that it was grounds for the death penalty under the Mosaic Law. 
 
Deuteronomy 22:22, If a man is found lying with a married woman, then both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel. 
 
3. Under Roman Law, the death penalty for adultery was lifted because adultery was so common. 
4. Jesus elevated the seriousness of the marriage breach and declared that adultery was grounds for divorce in Matthew 5:32. 
5. God gave the seventh commandment to protect marriages. 
a. Positive: To encourage couples to find fulfillment within the marriage covenant. 
b. Negative: To require consequences because God hates what adultery does to people made in His image. 
 
Malachi 2:16, “For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel…

The blessing Abraham received from God was given to Isaac, whom Sarah bore to him in her old age. But who would be next to receive that blessing? Isaac married Rebekah and eventually she became pregnant with twins. 
 
 But in the womb they struggled together, and Rebekah inquired of the Lord as to what was happening. “There are two nations within you,” the Lord said, “and the older will serve the younger, and one nation will be stronger than the other.” In other words, the covenant of blessing that God gave to Abraham and then to Isaac would be passed to the younger of the twins. This was not customary in that culture, but this is what God had decided. 
 
When Rebekah was giving birth to the twins. The first that arrived was covered with hair, so they call him Harry. Well, actually, they called him Esau, which means hairy. And afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding onto Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob, which means heel snatcher, or supplanter, or, in other words, one who catches others by the heel to trip them up. 
 
Jacob lived up to his name. One day when Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished; and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a swallow of that red stew, for I’m famished.” But Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.” And Esau responded, “I am so hungry I’m about to die; so what use then is the birthright to me?” And Jacob said, “First swear to me.” So Esau sold his birthright to Jacob. 
 
When we come to chapter 27, Isaac is 137 years old, his eyes are dim from age and he doesn’t know how much time he has left to live, so he decided it was time to give the blessing that would normally belong to the eldest son. 
 
The problem is that Isaac favored Esau over Jacob. Esau was ruddy and an outdoorsman. He was an archer and a hunter and Isaac had a taste for wild game. Rebekah favored Jacob. Perhaps because she knew that he was to receive the blessing handed down from Abraham or perhaps it was because he was a peaceful man, living in tents. 
 
One day Rebekah overheard Isaac telling Esau to hunt some wild game and prepare his favorite stew after which Isaac would give the blessing to Esau. This wasn’t right. She knew this was not God’s plan, but rather than trusting that God would somehow fulfill His promise, she took matters into her own hands and hatched a plan to deceive Isaac into giving the blessing to Jacob. 
 
Isaac wasn’t trusting God’s plan either. Notice the secrecy. Notice the conspiracy. Normally the father’s blessing would be given before the entire family because it was like a will distributing the family wealth and headship. 
 
Isaac knew that God had determined that the older would serve the younger. He knew that Esau had sold his birthright to Jacob and he also knew that Esau had disqualified himself from spiritual leadership when he took two Canaanite women as wives, yet he resisted God’s plan. 
 
There are many lessons from this story, but they’re not lessons we learn from their excellent character; we learn from their poor example. God allows the reality of who they are to be seen because we can learn many lessons about character in our own lives as well lessons about the faithfulness of God in spite of our weakness and failures. 
 
I. Don’t Resist God’s Plan 
 
Isaac knew what God had said to Rebekah, that the older would serve the younger, but he decided to resist God’s plan. 
 
It’s never a good idea to resist God’s plan, it always ends badly. I could give example after biblical example, but I’m sure there are many in this room who have experienced that themselves and know that it is true. 
 
A. Without vision; people perish 
 
Isaac’s eyes are too dim to see. This is true physically, but I submit it was true spiritually as well. He didn’t see the spiritual consequences of resisting God’s will for the boys.

Genesis chapter 22 is one of the most important chapters in the entire Old Testament: In this chapter is one of the clearest pictures of Jesus offering Himself as a sacrifice for our sins. In this chapter we understand how the Temple in Jerusalem came to be located there on Mount Moriah. And in this chapter, we understand what victorious faith looks like when Abraham’s faith is brought to the ultimate test. 
 
When it comes to our relationship to God, faith is everything, but faith is meant to be used, it’s meant to be the foundation for how you live. And faith is like exercise, the more you use it, the stronger it becomes. You can’t say, “I tried that faith thing and it didn’t work for me.” That’s like saying, “I tried the going to the gym thing, but it didn’t work for me.” Well, it would help if you did something while you were there. 
 
Abraham is called the father of our faith, but he didn’t start out in his relationship with God always being victorious, Abraham grew in his faith. There were times when he failed, but Genesis 22 is about Abraham’s spectacular victory! 
 
 At this point, Abraham is an old man. He has walked with God many years, and God is now giving him the greatest test of his life. God is going to ask him to place on the altar that which meant the most to him. 
 
 There is so much personal application in this study because we all hold on to things and God wants to know if we will truly trust Him in our lives or not. Are we willing to lay them before God and give them to Him with complete trust? 
 
I. Faith Must be Tested 
 
 This is the first time the word ‘test’ is used in the bible, but not the first time Abraham has been tested in his faith. 
 
 There was the ‘Follow God Test,” when God called Abram to leave his father’s house and relatives and go to a place he had not known. He probably would get a ‘C’ on that one. He got halfway and stopped, and God had to urge him on again. He ended up taking his nephew Lot with him which ended badly. 
 
 Then there was the ‘Famine Test.’ When a famine hit the land, he ended up going to Egypt for provisions, said a half-truth, which of course is a whole lie. This got him a rebuke from the Pharaoh and escorted out of the country. He got an ‘F’ on that one. 
 
 Then there was the ‘Conflict Test,’ when Lot’s herdsman and Abraham’s had tension over grazing rights. Abraham offered Lot that he could choose whatever land he wanted, and Abraham would take what was left. On that test, Abraham got an ‘A.’ 
 
 And of course, we can’t forget the ‘Fatherhood Test.’ God promised him a son, but Abraham and Sarah took matters into their own hands and Sarah offered her handmaiden Hagar. The result was trouble that continues to this day. 
 
 Even though Abraham and Sarah failed, however, God’s promises did not fail. 
 
 At this point, God fulfilled His promise of giving Abraham a son and their house has been filled withed laughter and joy since God gave them Isaac when Sarah was 90 years old. 
 
 But will Abraham’s confidence be in his son, or in God who gave him his son? 
 
A. Give God that which means most 
 
 For there to be a test, it must be regarding something we care about. 
Illus – There are several scriptures that forbid the Jews to eat vultures, bats, and a goodly number of insects; I can honestly say that I have passed this test with flying colors! 
 But there are other things we often hold on to and give the highest place in our lives. Even good things can get out of order…

In chapter 15 God promised Abram that God would bring forth a son for him out of his own body and that his descendants would inherit the land we know today as Israel. But in chapter 16, his wife, Sarai, took matters into her own hands and helped God out by suggesting that Abram produce a son through her handmaiden, Hagar. 
 
 Abram listened to his wife and went into Hagar and the result was Ishmael, a wild donkey of a man whose hand would be against everyone and everyone’s hand would be against him. We are seeing the consequences of that today as Ishmael became the father of the Arab nations and the conflicts in the Middle East can be traced back to Abram and Sarai taking matters into their own hands and coming up with their own solution rather than trusting God. 
 
Then, after 13 long years of facing the consequences of not trusting God, with all the conflict, the drama, and chaos, God appeared to Abram, changed his name to Abraham, the father of a multitude, and said again that Abraham would have a son, but this time was very clear, “Your wife, Sarah, will bear a son.” When Abraham heard it, he fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to a man 100 years old? And will Sarah, who is 90 years old, bear a child?” He even brought up Ishmael to God, saying, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!” God responded firmly, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son and My covenant will be with him.” 
Chapter 18 takes place just a short time later. The Lord appears to Abraham and confirmed again that his wife, Sarah, would have a son. But this time Sarah herself hears this promise and she also laughed within her heart. 
 
This is a story of Abraham and Sarah learning to walk by faith. Hearing God’s promises is one thing, but learning to walk by them is quite another. In the end, however, both Abraham and Sarah will be listed in Hebrews 11, that famous chapter which we call the hall of faith. 
 
I. Nothing is too Difficult for the Lord 
 
 This is the great lesson of the chapter and it’s the substance of living by faith. 
 
 “Where is Sarah, your wife?” the Lord said to Abraham. Perhaps he said her name knowing that she would listen, or eavesdrop, more attentively. 
 
 Abraham and Sarah both laughed when they heard that Sarah would bear a son, but the Lord responded, “Is anything too difficult for the Lord?” If we can grasp the greatness of that truth, we can understand what it means to walk by faith. 
 
A. God brings you to the end of your strength 
 
 They tried to fulfill God’s promises by their own efforts; they tried to help God and only created problems and difficulties. 
 
 God waited until they came to the end of their own efforts, the end of their own strength. Sarah was 90 years old and it would take a miracle for her to have a son. 
 
 The Lord wants you to recognize your weakness so you will trust His strength. Sometimes, however we need help recognizing our weakness and God has creative ways of helping us see. 
 
 Many people struggle in their Christian walk because they don’t recognize their weakness and they trust in themselves rather than in the Lord. 
 
 It’s when we recognize our weakness that we trust in God’s help and God’s strength. 
 
2 Corinthians 12:9-10, And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses… For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Matthew 5:21-26 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 5:1-20, Jesus declared the standard for being His disciple and entrance into the kingdom of heaven. 
2. What is that standard? Perfection. He said in Matthew 5:20, “For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.” 
3. That was a radical statement. In that day, the scribes and Pharisees were hailed as the definition of righteousness. 
4. Then Jesus exploded their world view and said their standard was not good enough because they only stressed an external obedience to the Law. God has a different standard, for God looks at the heart! 
5. God desires a deeper righteousness where obedience flows from a heart that is filled with faith because it has been transformed by His love and grace through Jesus. 
6. In verses 21-26, Jesus applied the kingdom of heaven standard to the sixth commandment, once again taking it to a deeper level by examining the heart of man. What did His teaching reveal? 
 
I. The Anger of Man Misses the Mark (21-22) 
 
• In verse 21, Jesus quoted Exodus 20:13. 
• The “ancients” mentioned by Jesus were the original recipients of the Mosaic Law at Mount Sinai. 
• This wasn’t the first prohibition against murder. God gave the first command to Noah after the flood. 
 
Genesis 9:6, Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man. 
 
• God made murder punishable by death because each person is made in His image; life has value. 
• The scribes and Pharisees taught that if a person did not commit the physical act of murder, all was well, no command was broken. 
• But Jesus elevated the standard when He said, “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court;” (22) 
• What was Jesus saying? 
 
 
A. Do not let anger master you 
1. The word “anger” means a “settled anger”, “a malice that is nursed inwardly”. 
a. There is a righteous anger. The Reformer, Martin Luther, called it the “anger of love”. 
 
Martin Luther, “An anger of love [is] one that wishes no one any evil, one that is friendly to the person, but hostile to the sin.” 
 
b. The Apostle Paul also spoke of a righteous anger but warned that it can easily turn fleshly and sinful. 
 
Ephesians 4:26-27, Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity. 
 
c. In Matthew 5, Jesus was speaking of an unrighteous anger, an anger driven by pride, vanity, hatred, malice, and revenge. 
2. Jesus was saying that while murder is forbidden, so is the anger that prompts the thought and leads to the act. When we’re angry with someone, it’s like committing murder in our hearts because we want to get rid of the one who gets in our way. 
 
1 John 3:15, Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

3. Let’s discover what Jesus expects so that each of us may impact our world as disciples of Christ. 
 
Matthew 5:13-16 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 5:1-12, Jesus told those who had gathered around Him what it means to be His disciple, the characteristics He expects to see from those who follow Him. 
2. These are “beautiful attitudes”, attitudes which are the result of God’s work in the heart of each person who has surrendered their will, declared their allegiance, and have placed their faith in His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. 
3. God’s blessing rests upon each person who embodies what Jesus taught in these verses. 
a. A true disciple of the kingdom of God is poor in spirit but is comforted by their heavenly Father. 
b. They are meek yet empowered to do kingdom work because God’s Spirit is upon them. 
c. They don’t settle for the empty things of this world but hunger and thirst for righteousness and are satisfied. 
d. They will see God because of their faith in the cleansing work of Jesus’ blood at Calvary. 
e. They seek peace, even with their enemies, just as their Father in Heaven did through His Son, Jesus. 
4. Imagine what a person’s life would look like if these characteristics were evident and increasing over time. 
5. Imagine the impact that person would have on those around them. 
6. Jesus gave us two word pictures to spell out the impact for us in verses 13-16. 
 
I. Be Salty (13) 
 
• The first thought that comes to mind when we hear that someone is “salty” is that the person in question is “coarse”, “vulgar”, or “rude”. 
• Jesus did not have those synonyms in mind! But this is what He did have in mind… 
 
A. You can never be too salty 
1. Salt was extremely valuable and important in that day, so this word picture would have had significant meaning to those listening to Jesus. 
a. Pure salt does not decompose over time but maintains it chemical composition. 
b. Therefore, salt became a symbol of endurance and value. 
 
2. Practically speaking, salt had many uses. 
a. Roman soldiers were sometimes paid part of their wages in salt. Our English word, “salary”, comes from the Latin word which means “to give salt”. To be “worth one’s salt” means to “worth one’s pay”! 
b. Meat was preserved with salt to keep it from spoiling in the hot sun. 
c. Salt was added to wounds to protect against infection. 
d. Newborn babies were rubbed with salt to cleanse and purify them (Ezekiel 16:4). 
e. Salt was also used, as it is today, to add flavor to a meal. 
3. For the Jew, salt had religious significance. 
a. According to Jewish tradition, salt was linked to God because He is the one who purifies and preserves while demons were linked to corruption and decay. 
b. Salt was linked to the Torah. 
 
Quote: “The Torah is like salt… the world cannot endure without it.” 
 
c. Salt was used in worship, mixed into or sprinkled upon sacrifices. 
 
Leviticus 2:13, Every grain offering of yours, moreover, you shall season with salt, so that the salt of the covenant of your God shall not be lacking from your grain offerings; with all your offerings you shall offer salt.

When we left Abram last week, God had just promised him a son. The problem, however, was that Abram was 85 and his wife, Sarai, was 75 years old and barren. 
 
 The story takes a tragic turn when Sarai decides to help God out by providing a son through her handmaiden, Hagar. Abram listens to his wife, goes into Hagar, and she becomes pregnant. That’s when the drama begins, which is predictable. They didn’t follow God’s plan, they took matters into their own hands and the result was trouble upon trouble. 
 
 Hagar starts acting all superior to Sarai. Sarai then blames Abram for the whole thing, he wants nothing to do with it, so he tells his wife, Sarai, to do what she wants. Sarai then treats Hagar harshly. Hagar can’t stand being treated that way, so she runs away, presumably headed back home to Egypt. 
 
 That’s when God intervenes. He finds Hagar by a spring of water in the wilderness and told her to go back home to Sarai and to submit to her authority. In other words, she needs to stop being part of the problem. Her son, Ishmael is born the next year, but he is a wild donkey of a man and difficult to raise. 
 
 Abram then doesn’t hear from God for 13 years. Finally, after 13 years of living with the consequences of not trusting God and facing all the drama of raising a contentious wild donkey of a boy, God appears to Abram and says, “I am El Shaddai, the all-sufficient One, walk before Me and be blameless.” 
 
 This is the first time we’ve heard this name of God and it is filled with great promise. 
 
I. God is All-Sufficient 
 
 Sarai and Abram were not yet strong enough in faith to believe that God would fulfill His promise of a son. They didn’t yet believe in the sufficiency of God, so God comes to him 13 years after they took matters into their own hands and had suffered the consequences. 
 
 The first thing God says after 13 years of silence is, “I am El Shaddai;” I am the all sufficient one. 
 
 This is an aspect of God we need to understand as well because we have many things we need to trust God for every day. 
 
 In Genesis 17 God comes to Abram after 13 years and speaks again of his covenant of promise, but now God is calling Abram to a changed life. 
 
A. God doesn’t need your help 
 
 Abram is 99 years old. God has given him the promises of a multitude of descendents that would come from his own body. Perhaps they thought this was a problem that was too difficult for God, and so they came up with their own solution. 
 They tried their way and it only created troubles, but God’s plan and God’s way was better in every way. 
 Have you ever come up with your own plan, have it fail miserably and then God reveal that His plan is so much better? 
Illus – When I realized God wanted me to go to bible college and become a pastor, I came up with my own creative solution, but God had something far greater in mind. 
 Abram and Sarai’s solution brought Ishmael- Israel’s thorn the flesh to this very day. 
 At this point in the story Ishmael is 13 years old and we can well imagine the bitterness, rebellion, and contempt that would have been in their home. 
Genesis 16: 11-12, The angel of the LORD said to her further, “Behold, you are with child, and you will bear a son; and you shall call his name Ishmael… He will be a wild donkey of a man, his hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand will be against him;” 
App – Maybe you have your own story of when you decided to do things your own way, maybe even knowing that it wasn’t the right thing to do. If so, you then know that the results are most unpleasant - trouble and difficulty and much more struggle than you ever would have had if you just would have listened to God in the first place! 
Psalm 106:13, 15, They soon forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel…they tested God in the desert… And He gave them their request but sent leanness into their soul. NKJV

In Genesis 12, God called Abram out of the city of Ur of the Chaldees, near the mouth of the Euphrates River, to go to the land God would show him; the land of Canaan, later known as the land of Israel. 
 
 Abram arrived in the land of Canaan when he was 75 years old. His nephew, Lot, was with him. In the course of time, their livestock and herds grew significantly, and a conflict arose between the herdsmen of Abram and the herdsmen of Lot. 
 
 Not wanting a conflict between them, Abram offered that Lot could choose whichever land he wanted, and Abram would take what remained. Lot chose the Jordan River Valley and settled in the city of Sodom. 
 
 Lot soon found himself in trouble, however, when an alliance of Kings from Mesopotamia led by a man named, Chedorlaomer, attacked Sodom and the surrounding cities. Lot and his family were taken captive. 
 
 A fugitive escaped and alerted Abram that his nephew, Lot was in trouble. Abram had more than 300 servants and he led them out in pursuit. He overtook them in an area far to the north and Abram and his men rescued his nephew, Lot. 
 
In Genesis 15, Abram has just come from the battle and must now be on guard. Would these kings mount an attack in retaliation? That is common in the Middle East, even today, which is why we are seeing an escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran. 
 
 God comes to Abram in a vision and once again gives him promises on which Abram must learn to stand. In these verses, we see Abram growing in faith and increasing in blessing as he does. 
 
 There is practical application for us in these verses because we all need to grow in our faith. Abraham is called the father of our faith and given as an example of a man who takes God at his word and believes what God says, but at the same time, he doesn’t start out as a pillar of faith, he grows in his faith.

What interesting timing that the day we happen to be on Genesis 12, where God says to Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you,” is the same day we celebrate the 70th anniversary of Israel becoming a nation. 
 
In these verses we meet Abram, one of the most important people in the history of man. Later he will be Abraham and will be called the “father of faith” and “the friend of God.” In fact the scripture says that those who have faith are sons of Abraham. We used to sing a song in children’s ministry that said the same. “Father Abraham had many sons, many sons had father Abraham, and I am one of them and so are you, so let’s just praise the Lord…” 
 
Though Abram is the father of faith, we also see him growing in his faith. He doesn’t start out as a spiritual giant. In fact, it seems that God makes a point of showing us his failures. We can relate. 
 
 We are still growing in our faith. We are often like the man who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus and said, “If you can help him, please have pity on us.” “If you can?” Jesus said, “all things are possible to him who believes.” The man then responded, “I do believe, help my unbelief.” 
 
 Abram was living in the city of Ur when God called him. Ur was a large metropolitan city near the mouth of the Euphrates river. It is one of the earliest known civilizations in the world with great wealth and architectural development. There they worshiped the moon god, Nanna. No doubt Abram’s father, Terah, was an idol worshipper of that moon god when Abram was called by God to leave that place. 
 
The name Abram means exalted father. The problem is that Abram is not a father at all. Sarai (means princess), his wife, is barren and in that culture, being barren meant that they were thought to be cursed of God. 
 
We would not have known about Abram, however, if it were not for his faith. His faith stands out against the culture of his time. The people of Ur followed idols, but Abram was different. Abraham believed God, the scripture says, and it was counted to him as righteousness.
