Matthew 10:16, Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; therefore be shrewd as serpents, and innocent as doves. 
 
1. We live in a fallen world where truth is called a lie and lies are embraced as truth. 
2. Temptation surrounds us. Since the Fall, no one is exempt from it. 
3. Yet, as believers in Jesus Christ we are called to be slaves of righteousness, not slaves of sin (Romans 6). 
4. Tonight, we are going to discover important principles for overcoming temptation when it comes knocking by looking at the example of our Savior, Jesus Christ. 
 
Matthew 4:1-11 
 
Context 
1. In Matthew 3:15, Jesus was baptized “to fulfill all righteousness”. This marked the start of His public ministry. Through baptism, Jesus identified with those He came to save so that they may enter His kingdom. 
2. In Matthew 4:1, we’re told that Jesus was immediately “led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil”. Why? 
 a. Not to confirm that Jesus is the Son of God. He is. 
b. Not to receive the Father’s approval. Jesus had it! When He was baptized, the Father declared, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” 
c. It was the Father’s will for Jesus to be tempted so that He would be identified with us, fallen humanity, and to show creation that Jesus is our Conqueror! 
3. Jesus also exposed Satan and his schemes so that we may learn from Christ’s example and experience His victory over temptation. 
 
Transition – Let’s look at Satan’s schemes to discover how Jesus was victorious so that we may walk in His victory! 
 
I. There Are Three Forms of Temptation 
 
• According to 1 John 2:16, temptation comes in one of three forms. 
 
1 John 2:16, For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 
 
A. The Lust of the Flesh (2-4) 
1. In Matthew 4:2, we’re told that Jesus “fasted for forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.” 
2. While physically weak because of fasting, Satan attacked Jesus. 
3. Satan’s first temptation appears to be straightforward, turn stones into bread. But there’s more to the temptation. 
4. Let’s paraphrase the temptation. “If You are the Son of God, use Your authority to satisfy your body’s desire for food.” 
5. Eating bread is not a sin! But at this point, the Father did not want Jesus to eat bread. It was God’s will for Jesus to fast. Later, the angels would minister to Jesus and probably gave Him bread to eat (11). 
6. So, the enemy tempted Jesus to satisfy His flesh, even though it was contrary to His Father’s will; to exercise His authority over His body and not submit to the Father’s authority. 
7. It was an appeal to satisfy the physical appetite, similar to how he tempted Eve. 
 
Genesis 3:1, And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?’” 
 
APPL – The appeal to satisfy the flesh is strong! The flesh always seeks to gratify itself and Satan repeatedly pushes that button with one temptation after another! 
 
ILLUS – My love for M&M’s 
 
9. Jesus’ answered Satan with God’s Word, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Deuteronomy 8:3). 
a. Jesus came to do the will of the Father! 
John 5:30, I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 
 
b. Therefore, Jesus was content with temporary hunger because He lived to do the Father’s will and refused to submit to Satan’s enticement. 
 
APPL – When we put our physical needs ahead of our spiritual needs, we sin. And if we let circumstances dictate our actions versus God, we sin! Feeding on and obeying God’s Word is more important than food!

After the flood, God told the sons of Noah- Shem, Ham and Japheth, to be fruitful and multiply, to populate the earth and subdue it. But Genesis 11 tells us that instead of following God’s word, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there, saying, “Let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name; lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” 
 
 Notice the theme; “Let us build for ourselves…” And, “Let us make for ourselves a name…” That’s a formula for many troubles. Instead of doing the hard thing, the difficult thing that God would bless, they did the thing that would bring glory and honor and fame to themselves. 
 
 The idea of building a tower to reach into heaven was not to create direct access to God. Although that does remind me of a funny story. One day Billy Graham was invited to visit the Pope in Rome and while he was there in the Pope’s office he noticed a red phone on his desk… 
 
 No, the idea of building this tower was to create a name for themselves; to create such a magnificent building so as to draw all people onto it. It’s a bit like building the great pyramids in Egypt; it has made famous the names of the pharaohs who built it. 
 
 The world’s tallest building today is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It is 2717 feet tall. And of course, for almost 100 years the largest building in the world was the Empire State building. There’s a lot of pride associated having the tallest building in the world. It’s about making a name for themselves. 
 
 Historians of ancient Babylon describe a great tower or ziggurat at its center, a tower built of solid masonry that is 2 ½ football fields in length and breadth, upon which was raised a second tower, and on that a third, and so on up to eight towers. At the summit, on the topmost tower, there is a spacious Temple. 
 
 God frustrated their plans by confusing their language that they might be scattered and inhabit the earth as He had directed them. Their collective pride and evil would only bring their collective rebellion to new heights. 
 
 This is a significant story and a significant city because Babel later becomes known as the famous Babylon which has a direct connection to the latter-day events in the book of Revelation. 
 
I. God Weighs the Motives of the Heart 
 
 When they come to the plains of Shinar, in modern day Iraq, they decided to settle there and build a great city with a tower that reaches into heaven. 
 
 Their motive is clear, “Let us make a name for ourselves.” That’s one of our great problems, our motives are so often in favor of self. It’s the desire of many to make themselves great; to have a great name for a great position, to receive great recognition. 
 
James 4:2-3, You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. 
 
 If they’re scattered abroad they will become obscure and they would rather build something so great that they will be remembered as the great ones who built this great tower. 
 
 They reject God’s plan in order to make a great name for themselves. 
 
A. Don’t be a Nimrod 
 
 When I was young it was an insult to call someone a Nimrod. But in that day, it was a compliment. Nimrod was a great hunter and was a role model to many who wanted to be like him. 
 
Genesis 10:8-10, Nimrod became a mighty one on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore, it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.” And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel… 
 
 As a mighty hunter, he became powerful. He was skilled with weapons and aggressive. 
Illus – Fishing with a spear versus fishing with a pole. 
 Nimrod is seen in history as a strong leader who formed the world’s first empire at Babel and sought the power to control as much as possible.

When I asked the Lord for a message He put this one on my heart almost immediately! Then I thought - Wow - this is a tough topic. 
One of the most common phrases we heard from our parents or one we also say to our kids…is BE PATIENT. 
We are alive and impatient - No one is crushing that character quality - Driving/Social Media/Life’s Challenges/Independence - we want instantaneous results and satisfaction. 
I invited the Jr High & High School students who are with us tonight to stay for the message. 
God has been how patient with us? 
James is a call to an uncomfortable place - It’s a call to do an uncomfortable thing - You have been called to live in the middle! 
Most, if not all of you are thinking, “In the middle of what?” 
Some theologians call it the ‘already’ and the ‘not yet.’ Already Christ has come. Already He has suffered and died and rose again. 
We already have the Word of God and the Spirit has been given to us. 
But not yet has sin been completely defeated. Not yet has the world been restored to what it was designed to be. Not yet has the Kingdom come. 
So, we’re called to live right here in the middle of the ‘already’ and the ‘not yet’, thankful for God’s grace, but aware there’s more to come. 
• Confession - I’m not good at it. I don’t like to wait - - What about you? 
A girl named Patience… 
If you could have a textbook on what it means to live with faith & patience in between the already and the not yet; it would be James. 
• Let’s look at the context. 
• This is not James the brother of John - The author is James, the son of Joseph & Mary - James the half brother of JESUS. 
• Can you imagine that house as a brother? And my boys thought life was unfair sometimes… 
• He went from not believing in Jesus until the resurrection - to being an early church leader - - Account in Acts 15. 
• James has already addressed believers in the midst of their trials. 
• So it was written to scattered Christians - telling them that trials are important in producing depth in their faith. 
• That we need to believe God’s promises and strive to grow in the midst of these trials. 
• Aren’t you glad you came tonight?

Exodus 4:1-17 
 
Context 
 
1. In Exodus 3, we’re told that after 400 years in Egypt, God, in accordance with His promise to Abraham in Genesis 15, revealed that He was going to deliver Israel from slavery. 
2. From a burning bush on Mt. Sinai, the LORD commissioned Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt. 
3. Sensing some resistance, God tried to reassure Moses by promising to be with him. 
4. God also revealed His sufficiency to meet the needs of Moses and Israel when He declared His name, “I am who I am”. 
a. God is self-existent, eternal, all powerful, all knowing, and everywhere present! 
b. He is the promise-making, promise-keeping God! 
 
Transition – Was that good enough for Moses? Look at his response in Exodus 4:1… 
 
I. Make Faith the Foundation of Your Life (1-9) 
 
A. “What ifs” are quicksand (1) 
1. Moses was rejected 40 years earlier (2:11-15) 
a. He killed an Egyptian soldier who was beating a Hebrew slave. 
b. By doing so, Moses thought Israel would recognize that he was their deliverer. 
c. But they rejected his leadership because they were not ready to leave Egypt and Moses was not ready to lead God’s way. 
2. At this point Moses was a broken man, humiliated after 40 years of tending his father-in-law’s sheep. 
a. I’m sure he was blessed to hear that God was going to deliver Israel. 
b. But he didn’t want to step out and obey God’s calling because he was fearful of failure and rejection! 
 
APPL – Though life may break us down and we feel humbled by past failures and rejection, we’re not useless! Through the breaking, God is bringing us to a place where faith is the foundation of our lives. God isn’t done with us yet! 
 
Isaiah 42:3, A bruised reed He will not break, and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish. 
 
ILLUS – Though sent into exile as a teenager, the prophet Daniel made faith the foundation of his life and did not use the injustice done to him as an excuse. 
 
Daniel 1:8, But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank. 
 
3. But fear deafened the ears of Moses so that he was unable to hear God’s promises. 
 
Exodus 3:18-21, And they will pay heed to what you say; and you with the elders of Israel will come to the king of Egypt, and you will say to him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. So now, please, let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.’ But I know that the king of Egypt will not permit you to go, except under compulsion. So I will stretch out My hand, and strike Egypt with all My miracles which I shall do in the midst of it; and after that he will let you go. And I will grant this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians; and it shall be that when you go, you will not go empty-handed.

3. But in an interesting twist, we are not immediately introduced to Jesus as an adult, but to a man we know as John the Baptist. 
 
I. John Prepared the Way for Messiah (1-12) 
 
• God promised Israel that He would raise up a prophet, like Moses, to lead His people. 
 
Deuteronomy 18:18, I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 
 
• God faithfully raised up prophet after prophet to direct Israel just as He said. 
• But after the prophet Malachi, there were 400 years of silence because there was no prophet in Israel. 
• What were some of the last prophetic words that Israel heard through Malachi? 
 
Malachi 3:1, Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. 
 
Malachi 4:1-2, 5, “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them ablaze,” says the LORD of hosts, “so that it will leave them neither root or branch. But for you who fear My name the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall. Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD.” 
 
• Why did God allow 400 years of silence? 
 
Amos 8:11, “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “When I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, But rather for hearing the words of the LORD, But they will not find it.” 
 
• Then a man dressed in a garment of camel hair with a leather belt fastened around his waist, whose diet consists of locusts and wild honey appeared on the scene. 
• According to 2 Kings 1:8, the prophet Elijah “was a hairy man with a leather girdle about his loins.” 
• God called Elijah during a very dark time in Israel’s history with a simple message, “Repent!” 
• Now John, who came in the spirit and power of Elijah, appeared in the wilderness of Judea preaching… 
 
A. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand 
1. The 400 years of silence were over! 
2. All four Gospels link John the Baptist with the prophecy of Isaiah given 700 years earlier. 
 
Isaiah 40:3-5, A voice is calling, “Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God. Let every valley be lifted up, And every mountain and hill be made low; And let the rough ground become a plain, And the rugged terrain a broad valley; Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, And all flesh will see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

God told Adam and Eve to multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. People lived much longer in those days and had many sons and daughters, so the population of the earth increased rapidly from the time of Adam to the days of Noah. 
 
 Jesus said that the last days will be like the days of Noah. I am convinced that we are living in the last days because of what is happening in the world today. We’re going to see what that means in the verses we’re studying today. 
 
 The days of Noah refer to two parts – to the time before the flood, in other words, the antediluvian period, and the time after the flood when God gave a covenant of grace to Noah. Jesus was referring to the time before the flood when people were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage. That can have two meanings. It can mean that they were just going about their lives without any concern about what God thought; or, it can mean the same as in Genesis 6. 
 
 They were going through life as if everything was fine, everything was good, but everything was not fine, everything was not good – because there was something desperately wrong! Immorality had increased to the point that it was beyond repair, humanity had become so immoral, there was no return. God had therefore determined to bring judgment on the earth. 
 
 In a similar way, the future Tribulation period of the latter days is the wrath of God poured out on an unbelieving world that has rejected God and is living in the depths of immorality. In other words, are we not living in the days of Noah? That should cause us to look carefully at these verses.

3. We may not know what’s in our own hearts, what drives us, but the Lord knows each heart intimately well. 
4. In fact, not only does God know our hearts, He actually reveals what’s in our hearts. How? Through His Son, Jesus Christ! 
 
Luke 2:34-35, And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed—and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” 
 
5. Jesus reveals the condition of each heart because His presence requires that each heart answer a question, “Who do you say Jesus is?” 
6. Even as a child, Jesus was the “Revealer of Hearts.” 
7. In Matthew 2:1-23, three groups of people are represented, each with their own response to Jesus. 
8. From them, we learn the proper response to Jesus.

 In Genesis 4 Adam and Eve have two sons, Cain and Abel. They had many more sons and daughters of course, Adam lived 930 years; you can imagine how many children they might have had! 
 
 But our story is about their first sons – Cain and Abel. The focus of the story is when they are grown men. Cain was a tiller of the ground. Abel was a keeper of the flocks. Each of them brought an offering to the Lord. Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground, the fruit of his labors, and Abel brought a lamb from the flock.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest event in all human history. God’s entire plan of the ages rests on that one historic event. But what you also need to know is that God’s entire plan for your life rests on that historic event as well. 
 
The personal significance and meaning of the resurrection is found in one of the simplest verses in all the Bible, “God loved the world so much, God loved you so much, that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” 
 
 In other words, the reason God sent His Son is because He loves you and doesn’t want you to perish, He wants you to have everlasting life. Someone might say, “Why would God love me? He’s holy and righteous and surely he knows about all the messes and mistakes I’ve made, why would he want anything to do with me?” Because you’re made in the image of God and He loves you. 
 
 We are currently studying through the book of Genesis and there we read that we are made in the image of God. I remember when we had our first child. I was holding her in my arms, absolutely amazed because I realized that she was made in my image. My love for her was not dependent on what she did, it was based on the fact that I was her father and she was my daughter, made in my image. 
 
It’s God’s nature to love and He sent His Son so the world would know how much He loves. He sent His Son to seek and to save that which was lost. In other words, He’s pursuing you. That’s love. He’s knocking on the door of your heart, He’s calling out your name, and He wants you to open the door of your heart so you can have a relationship to God as your Father. 
 
You may be a sinner; but He just so happens to be a forgiver; He’s a redeemer. He gives righteousness to sinners as a gift, you don’t even have to earn it. Eternal life is a gift, you just have to receive it. 
 
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.… Do you believe this?” 
 
 Someone might say, “How can you say this? Surely you know that everyone dies.” Of course I know everyone dies, I know that very well. When our daughter was killed it was the most difficult thing we’ve ever endured, but it was her body that died. Her soul lives, she was given eternal life because she asked Jesus into her heart as Lord and Savior. 
 
 Everyone will die a physical death, the statistics on death are pretty impressive; something like one out of every one people die physically. The older you get the more you understand that. When you’re young that’s harder to grasp. When you’re young it seems like you live forever, but the truth is you’re growing until about 25 years old, and then it’s all downhill from there. 
 
 God sent His Son so we would have hope beyond the grave. Death is not the end. Do you think that when you breathe your last you simply cease to exist? No, your body dies, but God made your soul to be eternal. The question is what happens after your last breath on this earth. God sent His Son so you would have hope beyond this life. 
 
 Do you have hope? What do you put your hope in? 
 
 The resurrection is about having life instead of death. The resurrection is about having hope from God instead of despair. He ignites our soul and fills our lives with meaning and purpose and transforms us by His presence in our lives. 
 
 The resurrection of Jesus takes place on the first day of the week at the dawning of a new day. This becomes a picture that when you receive Jesus into your life it’s the dawning of a new day, it’s just the beginning of experiencing life and life to the full. Some people in this room are just one sunrise away from God turning your life around.

While I was blessed with the opportunity to see so much biblical history and learn about the efforts of Israel to defend herself against her enemies, one location gave me a glimpse into the future, the Eastern Gate! 
 
1. Why is the Eastern Gate significant? 
a. The Eastern Gate was sealed shut in AD 1540–41 by order of Suleiman the Magnificent, a sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

But in Zechariah 14:4-5, we are told that when Messiah comes “His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to west” due to an earthquake. Then the Lord will enter Jerusalem through this gate and defeat all of Israel’s enemies. 
 
Zechariah 14:9, And the LORD will be king over all the earth; in that day the LORD will be the only one, and His name the only one.” 
 
2. This is where it will all happen, the Eastern Gate! 
3. But if you ask a Jew today, they will tell you that Jesus is not their Messiah. Jesus will not enter the Eastern Gate because He is not qualified to be their King. 
4. So, how can we, as Christians, be certain that Jesus is truly Messiah, the King, the One whose “name is the only one,” the Name Above All Names? The Gospel of Matthew gives us the answers.

While I was blessed with the opportunity to see so much biblical history and learn about the efforts of Israel to defend herself against her enemies, one location gave me a glimpse into the future, the Eastern Gate! 

1. Why is the Eastern Gate significant?  
a. The Eastern Gate was sealed shut in AD 1540–41 by order of Suleiman the Magnificent, a sultan of the Ottoman Empire. 
b.  Genesis is a book of beginnings. In fact, the word, Genesis actually means ‘beginning.’ Here we receive answers to some of the greatest questions people wrestle with; how did I come into being, who is God, what is God’s plan for the ages? 
 
 The book begins with a powerful statement that we should be careful to note because it has great importance to the rest of God’s Word…

• Jesus needed to go from Jerusalem (Samaria) to Galilee but to get there He chose to pass through Samaria. 
• Now during those times Jews hated Samaritans - Why? Well - - a little history will help us today. 
• In 722 BC The Assyrian Empire conquered Samaria. Over time, many Jewish people departed to some far-off places, while Assyrians and others came in to replace them. The Samaritan people became the result of the intermarriages of these newcomers with the Jews who chose to remain. 
 
• What a great lesson this is for us. We need to reach out to people who are not like us. This is the heart of the Lord. This is the example Jesus shows us in this story. 
Galatians 3:28; There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 
• So, Jesus could have, like most Jews, gone around Samaria but He had other plans and took the direct route. 
• But He had an appointment to keep. An appointment that God Himself wanted Jesus to keep. 
• The same Living water He offered the Woman at the Well - is available to each one of us - 
• In many ways the Samaritan woman represents the spiritual thirst of those without God and without hope.

In these verses Jesus is giving a message to His disciples which we now call the Olivet Discourse. He was on the Mount of Olives having just come from Jerusalem where He prophesied that the city of Jerusalem and the Temple itself would be destroyed, “Not one stone left upon another,” Jesus said. The disciples then asked, “Tell us, when will these things be and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?” 
 
 Jesus then gives the famous “signs of the times” in Matthew 24 that we might discern and understand the conditions of things in the world that will indicate we are in the last days, saying, “When you see these things, recognize that He is near, right at the door.” 
 
 Jesus said that there will be many false prophets and false messiahs who will mislead many. There will be wars and rumors of war. There will be famines and earthquakes that will grow greater in intensity and be closer together as the events of the last days draw near. There will be a great falling away, or apostasy, as unrighteousness and worldliness increases, and most people's love will grow cold. 
 
 Jesus then gave several parables on the importance of watching for the return of the Son of Man and being ready for the last days. 
 
 He said, “The coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah before the flood. They were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage and did not understand until the flood came and took them all away.” 
 
 He said that the Lord will come like a thief in the night. “If the master of the house had known what hour the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert. For this reason, you too be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you did not think He will.” 
 
 However, it’s important to understand that God gives us the signs of the times in advance so that the Day of the Lord will not come upon us like a thief in the night… 
 
1 Thessalonians 5:2, 4-5, You yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night… But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. 
 
 In chapter 25, Jesus gives parables about the importance of watching and waiting and being ready for the last days. These parables tell us what God wants us to do with our lives while we're waiting for His return. 
 
 It’s about how you spend the life that God has given you while you wait for His return. There is a day fixed when we will give an account of how we lived. He has entrusted much into our care and He expects us to live wisely.
