We have now come to the last chapter in Revelation. At this point, the seven-year tribulation of God’s wrath poured out on the earth is completed, the Antichrist, the false prophet, and even Satan himself have all been cast into the Lake of Fire. 
 
There was a thousand-year millennial reign of Christ, where He ruled, or more literally, shepherded the nations from Jerusalem where He established His throne. It will be a time of peace. As Isaiah the prophet describes it, they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. The nations will come into Jerusalem to give Him honor. The earth itself will be changed; the wolf will lie down with the lamb; the leopard will lie down with the young goat and a little boy will lead them. The cow and the bear will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like an ox. The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child will put his hand into the viper's den. In that day the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. 
 
 After the millennial reign of Christ, the earth as we know it today will pass away; it will be burned up with fire. Even the current heaven will pass away. 
 
 There will be a New Heaven and a New Earth and there will be the New Jerusalem which comes down out of heaven upon the New Earth. That will be the place of our eternal home!! 
 
 In chapter 22, John reveals what will happen inside the city of the New Jerusalem…

We have now come to the place in Revelation where the seven-year Tribulation has ended, the Lord has returned to the earth to rule and reign for 1000 years, believers have been judged at the judgment seat of Christ, nonbelievers have been judged at the great white throne judgment at the end of the millennium, Satan was released from the abyss to lead one final rebellion, but then was cast into the lake of fire in eternal judgment. 
 
That brings us to the point where we now look to eternity and beyond. The reason God shows us these things in advance is that we might prepare our lives for eternity. “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and heeds the things written in it; for the time is near.” 
 
 Many people have assumptions about eternity, but many of these come from movies or pithy sayings, or stories and even humor. And for some reason, Peter is always the one standing at the gate welcoming people to heaven. 
 
 Like, for example, the story about when a pope and a politician both die on the same day and arrive at the gates of heaven where Peter greets them. The pope was rather surprised to see a band of angels coming out to welcome the politician, music sounding and cheers of celebration as they carry him into heaven on their shoulders. Peter could see the concerned look on the face of the pope, so he said, “Something wrong?” “Well,” said the pope, “this isn’t exactly how I envisioned it…” 
 
No doubt you have heard the phrase, ‘pearly gates,’ that saying does has a biblical reference, but it’s not about heaven, up there, it’s about heaven when it comes to the earth. 
 
When most people think of eternity, they immediately imagine heaven, up there, with the Lord. These verses shed light on eternity and it’s not what many people think. Heaven, you might say, will be on the earth, but not earth as we know it, even the earth itself will be made new.

 The seven-year Tribulation period takes up a large part of Revelation as John writes fascinating, though terrible insights into those days. But the Tribulation will come to an end with an event the world has been waiting for for thousands of years – the return of Jesus Christ to rule and reign on the earth in person; the Second Coming of Christ. 
 
 Back in the day when newspapers were a thing, they would size the front-page headline according to the significance of the event. The largest type, reserved for the most important events is called Second Coming Type. That’s the greatest story any newspaper could ever print. 
 
 The return of Christ is so significant in the scriptures that there are more than 300 references in the New Testament alone. For every one reference to the Lord’s initial coming there are eight references to the Lord’s second coming. 
 
 Near the end of Jesus his ministry, he came into Jerusalem being hailed as the King of Israel as the crowds with Him were shouting, “Hosanna to the son of David; blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” He was riding on the foal of a donkey, a beast of burden. What a contrast to the Second Coming of Christ when he comes on a white horse with the armies of heaven. What is common between them, however, is that on both occasions, it was Jerusalem He entered. 
 
 Jerusalem is called the “possession of peace,” but it has been and will be the epicenter of conflict and of war. It is also the epicenter of future events and it will be the focal point again when Jesus returns. This will truly be the Triumphant Entry!!

 At this point in the book of Revelation we’re nearing the end of the Tribulation period; that seven-year period of time in which God pours out His wrath to a world that has rejected Him even though God has reached out to them. Interestingly, we also read that God will continue to reach out with the gospel even during the great Tribulation. 
 
 In the verses we’re studying today, we read that Babylon the Great has fallen. There is so much interest in what this could possibly mean and what impact this might have on world events leading into the last days that it’s very important we understand what he means when he speaks of Babylon the Great in the book of Revelation. 
 
 Is it an actual city? Which city might it be today? What does the Antichrist have to do with this city? What does it represent? How will it be destroyed? Does God destroy it? You might be surprised by the answers. 
 
Many books have been written on these chapters and many theories as to what this city represents. What we must do is to look at all the clues and prayerfully consider how to interpret and understand as well as to apply these verses.

Over time, many traditions have been added to the celebration of Christmas and for many, it’s the traditions that make Christmas special. And there are traditions from around the world that are certainly interesting. 
 
 In Japan, the traditional Christmas dinner is Kentucky Fried Chicken. This is so popular that families have to make reservations early to be certain to get their KFC on Christmas Day. 
 
 In Finland, they visit a cemetery over Christmas. Graveside candles are lit; entire cemeteries are lighted. Three fourths of all Finnish families visit a cemetery at Christmas, mostly on Christmas Eve. Special traffic arrangements handle the crowds. 
 
In Venezuela, people go to Christmas Eve service on roller skates. So many people skate to church on Christmas Eve they have to close the streets. It kind of gives new meaning to the expression ‘holy rollers.’ 
 
And of course, who could forget Christmas fruitcake? Which is actually a strange name for it because it is neither fruity nor cakey. In fact, the whole concept of regifting originated with fruitcake. It preserves so well it can be regifted for years. 
 
 In many ways, these traditions have slowly moved the world away from the reason God sent His Son, but the world is changing; it’s becoming more dangerous all the time. So much so, that many with spiritual discernment can sense storm clouds on the horizon; there is a deep evil that is rising. 
 
 This is a broken, evil world and while there is greater darkness, it will also be a time of revival. Darkness will get darker, but a light will also dawn. 
 
When Isaiah wrote the prophecy of Isaiah 9 it was a dark time for the nation of Israel. A terrible king ruled in Judah who was turning Israel away from God to go after the gods of the world, gods of worldliness and licentiousness. The result was predictable; they became weaker as a nation as darkness and turmoil came over them. 
 
But at the darkest hour, God gave the greatest promise. There is no question that these verses give us the greatest promise known to man; that God would send an answer to the darkness. 
 
 God’s answer is His Son. “Unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given.” And the promises, hope, and help are given to us in the name spoken of in this prophecy. 
 
God doesn’t just stand by idly and watch as people destroy their lives, He does something about it; God is on the move, He is pursuing relationship with us. God sent His Son, He is knocking on the door of hearts, He wants people have life. 
 
 Isaiah speaks of the name that is given for the One who is the coming hope for the world. We can gain great insight into the purpose and meaning of Christmas when we understand the significance of His name.

We recently studied Revelation 12 and there is a direct connection between that chapter and the story of the birth of God’s Son whom He sent to be the Savior of the world. 
 
 In Revelation 12, there are two signs that appear in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars; and she was with child; and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth. That woman is Israel and she was in labor to give birth to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. 
 
 And another sign appeared in heaven; a great red dragon having seven heads and 10 horns. The dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child. That great red dragon is none other than the serpent of old who was called the devil and Satan. The symbolism of the Dragon standing before the woman so that he might devour her child is seen in the story of the Magi in Matthew 2. 
 
However, studying about the visit of the Magi in Bethlehem as we celebrate the birth of Jesus is a bit of wrong timing. This is because all our nativity sets are incorrect. The common arrangement is for Joseph, Mary, the shepherds, farm animals, and the wise men all to be around the baby Jesus as he lay in the manger, just hours after his birth. 
 
 But the wise men came from the East a distance of perhaps 900 miles or more with a large group or entourage of people, which would have been the only way to travel safely in those days, and it therefore would have been several months before they arrived in Israel. And in fact, the account in the book of Matthew says that they visited Jesus at “the house,” which clearly suggests they were not still living with the animals by the time the wise men arrived. 
 
 Therefore, they probably arrived several months later. To keep our nativity scenes accurate, therefore, we would need to have the wise men across the room somewhere with them all heading toward Bethlehem. 
 
 Over time there have been several other myths that have developed around this story of the Magi coming from the East. For example, it doesn't tell us in the story that there were three of them. This is assumed because they came bearing three gifts, but maybe there were six or perhaps nine or 12. Maybe they all pitched in together to purchase these gifts, that is something men would definitely do. 
 
 It also doesn't say they came on camels; they might have come on powerful Arabian horses; although, with the journey of almost 900 miles, camels would have been a good option. 
 
 Of course, the origin of giving gifts at Christmas came from these Magi from the East. However, their gifts were not wrapped; which tells us two things: 1) they were wise; and 2) they were men. Men are terrible at wrapping gifts and why bother if they're going to just be opened anyway? 
 
There are three different groups of people in this story and from each group you can learn a lot about the treasure within the heart. In other words, each of them are pursuing what’s in their hearts. That’s where the story also applies to us. 
 
The King these Magi were seeking is the same King that God sent to pursue a relationship with you and me. How we respond reveals our heart just as it revealed each of theirs.
