 Many of you saw in the news this week that the United States is now recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and will be moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem over the next several years. 
 
 This is an extremely important move and could have an impact on latter-day events and the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. 
 
 But first, a little history. On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion announced the formation of the state of Israel. The United States, under Pres. Harry Truman was the first country to recognize the state of Israel. The next year, the US established their embassy in Tel Aviv, which is west of Jerusalem near the Mediterranean. 
 
 When David Ben-Gurion made the proclamation that formed the state of Israel, six Arab nations immediately declared war against Israel. But in the months leading up to that declaration of war, those same Arab nations insisted that Palestinian Arabs living in the war zone should clear the area to minimize civilian casualties. More than 800,000 fled into refugee camps, expecting to stay only a few weeks at longest. 
 
It was inconceivable to those Arab nations that Israel could actually win that war. How could it be that a tiny nation newly formed on a sliver of land could defeat six Arab nations with well-established armed forces? Those 800,000 Palestinian Arabs that fled the war zone became the 4.3 million Palestinian refugees today. 
 
 In the 1948 war, Israel advanced to take Western Jerusalem. In the 1967 war, Israel advanced to take all of Jerusalem and the surrounding area, including the Temple Mount on which sit the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock shrine. 
 
 The Palestinians believe that eastern Jerusalem in particular, was taken illegally, and they have laid claim to eastern Jerusalem for their future capital should they be able to obtain statehood. That is why the decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem is so controversial; the Arabs and Muslims of the world believe that such a move recognizes only Israel’s right to Jerusalem which could hinder the possibility of peace in the region. 
 
 Here is the spiritual significance. It demonstrates that Jerusalem will be the center of world events in the latter days. It unites the nations of the world against Israel and the United States and it sets the stage for a world leader to arise who will negotiate a covenant of peace between Israel and the nations of the world. 
 
Part of that covenant of peace could include partitioning Jerusalem so that the Palestinian Arabs could have a portion of east Jerusalem to establish a capital. It could also include partitioning the area around the Temple Mount, so the Arabs would have the current area where the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock are located and the Jews would have the area just north of that for the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple. 
 
Now, as we look at Revelation 14, we look into the future during the days of the Tribulation period when the Antichrist will betray Israel and retake the temple and set himself there to be honored and worshipped. At that point, all hell breaks loose as Israel will respond with force. 
 
 Spiritual warfare will be behind all these events, but will have very real consequences. Those who stand with the Antichrist will take ‘the mark of the beast’ on the back of the hand or on the forehead; without which no one will be able to buy or sell. 
 
 God promises in these verses that they will receive rest. There is an application here for us as well. We are called to persevere in our faith – and rest becomes an important part of the victory.

 Perhaps for many, the most memorable part of the book of Revelation is the mark of the beast. No one can buy or sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. And of course, that number is 666. 
 
 But these verses are a study in contrasts. Satan’s original sin was his desire to be like the Most High God. Therefore, you see many ways that Satan imitates God. 
 
 This mark is placed on their right hand or on their forehead, and though it is very real, it is an imitation of the seal that God places on the foreheads of the 144,000 Jewish witnesses during the Tribulation. Interestingly, that seal upon them is the name of the Lamb and His Father. 
 
 The satanic mark is that of the Beast, or the Antichrist and the power of the Antichrist is Satan himself. But there is also another beast that arises in those days who will have two horns like a lamb, but speaks as a dragon. Thus, you have what can be called the unholy trinity. 
 
For much of our study through Revelation John wrote of scenes of heaven. He described the One sitting on the throne of God having a scroll upon which was written the edicts and declarations of the events of the last days. 
 
 John also saw Jesus who was worthy to open the scroll and to break the seven seals with which it was sealed; each seal revealing awesome events of the Tribulation seven-year period that is coming in the near future. 
 
 The seventh seal was broken, and it revealed seven angels with seven trumpets, each revealing cataclysmic events that will destroy and devastate the earth as the wrath of God is poured out. 
 
 But here the scene is on the earth. In John’s vision he sees Jesus standing on Mount Zion and with him are the 144,000 Jewish witnesses for Christ that we read about in chapter 7. These 144,000 have the seal of God on their foreheads. They have been going through the Tribulation and are victorious through it. 
 
 Today, I want us to contrast the mark of the beast with the seal on the foreheads of these 144,000 faithful witnesses and what each of them represent.

Let’s talk turkey. This week we celebrated Thanksgiving and of course turkey has become central to the whole event which is about gathering everyone together as a family and enjoying an amazing meal together… of turkey. 
 
 How did turkey become such an integral part of Thanksgiving? Of course, the first Thanksgiving was held in November 1621 when the pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered for a harvest celebration feast and to watch football. That last part has not been verified by historians, but rumor has it that the Redskins were playing the Chiefs. 
 
 Turkey is indigenous to North America and Benjamin Franklin claimed that this made the turkey a more suitable national bird for the United States than the Bald Eagle. That idea got stuffed however, as the image of a turkey on our presidential seal wasn’t inspiring; it may have been more accurate, however. 
 
 What’s interesting is that the word for the turkey in Hebrew – Hodu - is the same word for giving thanks. That connection is merely coincidental, but the idea of giving thanks has a long history in Israel; it goes all the way back to the book of Leviticus, a book that instructed Israel in regards to their relationship to God. 
 
 God wanted the giving of thanks to Him to be an integral and significant part of their relationship to Him. God had a unique relationship to Israel, distinct from all the other nations of the world, but the distinction also had to be personal. God wanted each of them to have a relationship to Him that included having a heart that was thankful to God for all that He had done for each of them personally. 
 
In the same way, we should also recognize that God wants us to understand the significance of giving thanks with a grateful heart for all that God has done for us.

There is spiritual warfare all around us; if you ask Jesus into your heart as Lord and Savior, then you’re in the battle, because you are a target. That’s what we’re going to see in the verses we’re studying today. 
 
We have been given a look into heaven. John described the throne of God and the One sitting on it held a scroll that was sealed with seven seals. John saw Jesus who was worthy to open the scroll and to break the seven seals; each seal revealing awesome events of the Tribulation seven-year period. 
 
 The seventh seal revealed seven angels with seven trumpets, the sounding of each trumpet revealed cataclysmic events as the wrath of God is poured out on a world that rejected God with hard hearts. 
 
 At this point in the book of the Revelation, the sixth trumpet has sounded, but before the seventh trumpet many things are revealed. John is shown that in the last days, Satan will have a significant role in unfolding of world events. He is shown in chapter 12 as the serpent of old, the devil, or Satan. He is mighty in power and desires to destroy, knowing that his time is short. 
 
 But Revelation 12 is also about spiritual victory. Our enemy is a defeated foe. We are called to be overcomers; we do not have to be defeated and in fact we are given everything we need for spiritual victory.

2. The truth is tests aren’t reserved for the classroom only. 
3. There are seasons in life when tests occur as well. 
4. Today, we’re going to study a passage which will give us insight into the “how’s”, what’s”, and “why’s” behind the testing of our faith so that we may pass each one with “flying colors”. 
 
1. After 25 years of waiting for the child that God had promised, Abraham, at the age 100, and Sarah, at 90, had Isaac. 
2. At this point, at least 13 years had passed. One would think the only thing that this story needed was the perfect fairy tale ending, “And they lived happily ever after.” They had been through so much. Surely nothing more would be asked of them! 
3. Then we read Genesis 22:1 and realize Abraham’s faith would be tested once again. 
 
 
I. Faith Will Be Tested (1-2) 
 A. God has a purpose for each test 
 1. This is the first time the word test is used in 
the Bible. 
2. The word test means to try or to prove. 
 
3. Spiritually speaking, a test proves faith. Do we walk the talk? 
a. Tests reveal who we are and what we’re made of. 
b. Tests reveal what we believe. 
c. Specifically, tests reveal what we think about God. 
d. So, God does not test our faith because of sin in our lives, but to reveal the faith in our hearts. 
4. Tests are also designed to strengthen us. 
a. Pressure from the test develops our character. 
b. Pressure from the test deepens our faith, which strengthens our relationship with God.

When John was given this vision, the church was going through a difficult time. The church had already suffered under the Roman Emperor Nero, and now under Emperor Domitian the church was about to suffer again. 
 
 That background is important because we tend to see the Revelation only in light of current events and can sometimes forget that it has been a source of encouragement to Christians for many years. 
 
 In that day, Rome was the iron fist of an invincible and immovable power. Jerusalem was in ruins, the temple destroyed, Jews and Christians alike were taken by the thousands to Rome to be killed in the coliseum. 
 
 This book strengthened their faith. They were reminded that God was sovereign and reigned over all nations. 
 
 In Revelation chapter 8, the Lord Jesus who is seen as the Lamb who was slain in John’s vision of heaven, opens the last of the seven seals that sealed the scroll that was in the hand of Almighty who sat on the throne. When he opens the seventh seal there is silence in heaven for half an hour. But the sound of this silence has been heard throughout time as an ominous moment in the events of the last days. 
 
 What is the significance of this silence? Does it have an impact on us today?

 As we study through Revelation, we are taken with John into a scene of heaven. He saw a sea of glass like crystal. He saw a throne and He who sat upon it had a scroll in His right hand with writing on the inside and the back, sealed with seven seals. No one was found worthy to open the book and break the seals. At first this causes John to weep, but one of the elders said, “Stop weeping, the Lion from the tribe of Judah has overcome so as to open the book and the seven seals.” But when John looked, he saw a Lamb as though slain. 
 
 As the Lamb breaks each of the seven seals of the book, each one reveals an event of the coming seven-year Tribulation period which is the wrath of God poured out on the world. The first four seals revealed the four horsemen of the Apocalypse that brought first the deceiver, the Antichrist, then people slaying one another and war, then economic collapse and finally death and Hades. 
 
 When the Lamb breaks the seventh seal it will set forth seven trumpets, each of which declare more cataclysmic events of the wrath of God during the Tribulation. 
 
 After the sixth seal is broken, there is a pause before the seventh seal is broken; there is a pause so the bond-servants of our God can receive a seal on their foreheads. We are then given the actual number…144,000 receive this mark on their forehead. 
 
A mark on their forehead? That sounds familiar, you might say; and you would be right. First, we know that the great counterfeit, the Antichrist, puts his mark on the back of the right hand or on the forehead of people during the Tribulation so that without this mark, no one can buy or sell. 
We are also sealed with the Holy Spirit. There is also a scene in Ezekiel when the Lord said to a powerful angel, “Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.”

John was in the Spirit and was given a view into heaven. There was a sea of glass like crystal; and in the center was One sitting on a throne. Around the throne were 24 thrones where 24 elders were sitting, clothed in white with golden crowns on their heads. 
 
 In the right hand of Him who sat on the throne was a book, written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. John heard a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book and break it seals?” 
 
 No one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it. At this, John began to weep greatly, but one of the elders said to him, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion from the tribe of Judah has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.” 
 
 But when John looked, he saw between the throne and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain; and He came and took the book out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. When He took hold of the book, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the Lamb and worshiped, singing a new song. 
 
 Today, in chapter 6, we’re going to watch with John as the Lamb breaks the seals of the scroll, for with the breaking of each seal, events of the latter days will unfold. 
 
 Today, we are currently in the period of time which we could call the “birth pangs” which lead up to prophetic fulfillment. Jesus said in Matthew 24:6-8, “You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.” 
 
 The ‘birth pangs’ will increase until the Lamb opens the seven seals which seal the scroll. Each of the seals sets forth powerful events of the last days, beginning with what has been famously called, “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” And when you look at what is happening in the world today, you can almost put your ear to the ground and hear their hoofbeats drawing near.

What is heaven like? Many people have pondered this and would love to have a view into heaven. Is it a place where there are beautiful golf courses, or the most perfect fishing lakes or perhaps a place where people eat the most incredible delectable food and never gain weight!! 
 
In Revelation 4, John is taken up to heaven and instructed to write what he sees. The problem is that there are no words to adequately capture what his eyes take in. When we read these words, it makes our hearts yearn for more. 
 
John is shown the things which must quickly take place. In other words, John is shown the future events of the last days. But first, John is given a vision of heaven itself. 
 
We are brought with John into the scene before him. If we could only see what his eyes saw, but we take in his view, his description of what he saw and gain insight for our own lives, and be changed by it. 
 
There is a phrase I have come to truly appreciate; “We are changed in the presence of a Holy God.” These verses draw us into God’s presence and give us a deeper understanding of His heart and character. 
 
John describes the scene, there was a throne standing in heaven and One sitting on the throne, radiant in glory. Around the throne were 24 thrones and upon the thrones were 24 elders sitting, clothed in white with golden crowns on their heads. 
 
There were also four living creatures before the throne who never cease to say, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty.” 
 
Holiness is the character of God and He wants us to be changed to be like Him in heart and character, so there is much to learn from understanding these verses that describe God. 
 
The four living creatures are angels that are nothing like anything we can imagine, but they represent the nature of Jesus Christ. 
 
The prophet Ezekiel had a similar description of the throne in heaven and Jewish Rabbis taught that the four faces in Ezekiel’s vision represent God’s greatest creations. They were also represented on the ensign, the standard, used by each of the lead tribes when Israel camped in the desert: 
 
East Judah Lion 
West Ephraim Ox 
South Reuben Man 
North Dan Eagle 
 
The early church fathers taught that these faces represent the qualities of Jesus Christ that He would desire in each of us. Some have also suggested that they represent how Jesus is presented in each of the Gospels. 
 
In Matthew, Jesus is seen as the King, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. In Mark, He is seen as the servant, represented by the ox. In Luke, He is seen as the Son of Man, represented by the face of a man in Revelation; and then John, He is seen as the Son of God, represented by the eagle.

Large crowds would gather to hear Jesus’ teaching and in Luke 15 verse one, Luke writes that all the tax gatherers and sinners were coming near to listen to Him. 
 
 The Jewish leaders, however, grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” They were hoping to accuse Him, but Jesus wanted sinners to draw near. Even today, Jesus wants sinners to draw near. In another place, He’s called ‘the friend of sinners.’ 
 
 The Jewish leaders were wrong. A lot of people are wrong when it comes to what Jesus thinks about them. Which reminds me of a funny story… A burglar broke into a house and as he was tiptoeing through the dark he heard a voice, “Jesus is watching you…” 
 
 Many people have the wrong view of God. Some think He’s always cranky because they’re convinced He’s angry with sinners. Other people think He’s out to ruin their lives to get back at them for all the ways they’ve messed up. 
 
 But all of that’s wrong. Why is Jesus called the friend of sinners? Because, “God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him would not perish, but would have everlasting life.” 
 
 Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost, He came to give hope to those who have no hope. 
 
 Many in the community know that our daughter was murdered three years ago. At the trial this last summer, both my wife and I had the opportunity to speak directly to the man who killed her. When we spoke to him, both of us offered our forgiveness. I then added, “If you want to do anything to help us, then take this forgiveness as an opportunity to start your life over. One day you will stand before the judge of all the earth and give an account of your life, but it’s not too late, this is an opportunity to redeem your life.” 
 
 God is a Redeemer; he gives hope to the hopeless; He gives meaning and purpose to those who are lost. 
 
I have a dear friend who also lost his daughter to murder and together we are working to put a four-year Bible college in the state penitentiary. The inmates who graduate will become assistants to the chaplains and will be sent throughout all the prisons in Oregon to bring true spiritual transformation to all the prisons in Oregon. 
 
 Recently I was in Texas where this program has been going for several years; many inmates have graduated and have become chaplains’ assistants in many other prisons in Texas. I had an opportunity to meet with them and asked, “What has this meant to you personally?” They responded, “It’s meant everything to us. We have hope, we have meaning and purpose in our lives.” 
 
 One of them said, “My mother always blamed herself for the mess I made of my life… when I graduated, they let my mom attend. Afterward, I folded my cap and my gown and gave them to her. I then said, “Happy Mother’s Day…” 
 
 In Luke 15 there’s a story of a young man who messed up his life. That part of the story we can all relate to; but there’s much more; it’s not just a story about a young man who messed up his life, it’s a story about a father who sees his broken son walking toward home. He runs down the road toward his son. And with tears of joy welcomes him home. 
 
 Here’s the thing; it’s never too late to come home. It’s never too late to change your life. You’re not too young, you’re not too old. My dad was an alcoholic. He abused my mother, then later divorced her, and by his own admission he was just an old wretched cuss. But at 75 years old he realized that he had wasted most of his life. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a service just like this. He came forward and gave his life to Christ and I baptized him with my own hands.

Large crowds would gather to hear Jesus’ teaching and in Luke 15 verse one, Luke writes that all the tax gatherers and sinners were coming near to listen to Him.

 The Jewish leaders, however, grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” They were hoping to accuse Him, but Jesus wanted sinners to draw near. Even today, Jesus wants sinners to draw near. In another place, He’s called ‘the friend of sinners.’

 The Jewish leaders were wrong. A lot of people are wrong when it comes to what Jesus thinks about them. Which reminds me of a funny story… A burglar broke into a house and as he was tiptoeing through the dark he heard a voice, “Jesus is watching you…”

John has been given a vision or prophecy of latter-day events. He tells us these things in advance so we might discern the signs of the times and see the events that are happening in the world through the lens of scriptural prophecy. 
 
 But before he reveals prophetic insights, Jesus speaks to the seven churches in Asia. He speaks to each church commending them for things that are right and good, but also speaks words of correction - so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 
 
 Sometimes the corrections seem strong, but God wants to wake them up from spiritual slumber. He also says in verse 19, “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline.” 
 
Here in Revelation 3 Jesus is addressing the church in Laodicea, a city about 100 miles east of Ephesus in Asia Minor. Three main roads passed directly through it. It was a center of banking and finance in the Roman empire. There was also a large clothing industry based on the specialty of raising black sheep and creating a highly sought after glossy black wool. 
 
 A temple to Aesculapius was there. This was a medical cult claiming to have a healing salve for the eyes, commonly known as Phrygian Powder. Interestingly, the modern medical symbol of a staff with two serpents was the same symbol used by the followers of Aesculapius. 
 
 Six miles away at Hierapolis were famous hot springs, called, Pamukkale, which is modern Turkish for ‘cotton castle;’ named after the large limestone formations deposited over the centuries. The water from the Hot Springs was thought to have healing properties received from bathing and/or drinking the water. 
 
Aqueducts were built to bring the hot water the six miles to Laodicea through an aqueduct, but by the time the water arrived at Laodicea, it was lukewarm and unsuitable to the taste. 
 
 Many who study the scriptures believe that the city of Laodicea most closely represents the condition of our modern age in the western world. 
 
 Jesus uses these aspects of the city of Laodicea when He speaks to them about the church. This is the one church for which He has no commendation; only words of correction. But He makes clear that He loves the church and wants the church to change.
