John received this revelation which God gave Jesus in order to show His bond servants the things which must shortly, or quickly, take place, so now John is writing to the seven churches that are in Asia. There were certainly more than seven churches, but these represent the church in its entirety. 
 
 This book is the revealing of Jesus Christ in the latter days. He is the center of this letter and of the events that will take place in the end times. Chapter 1 gives a powerful and glorious picture of Jesus filled with symbolic meaning. 
 
 John heard a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet and when he turned to see the voice that was speaking, he saw seven golden lampstands and in the middle of the lampstands was one like the Son of Man. This is a picture of Jesus in His authority and glory standing amongst the churches. Notice what that says about the relationship Jesus has to His church; He stands in the center. 
 
God wants the churches to understand the things which must quickly take place, but first God wants to prepare the church, so He sends words of commendation, but also words of correction. If the church is going to be prepared, if the church is going to be ready, it must be strengthened spiritually and that includes bringing the necessary corrections. 
 
At this point, the church has been gaining strength throughout the entire Roman Empire. They’re making an impact like never before and know in all faith that their Lord is ruler of the kings of the earth. But success can sometimes be negative; it can make people rest on their laurels and no longer have the zeal they once had. 
 
For example, let’s say you’re the New England Patriots and win the Super Bowl… again. It’s hard to have that same drive that got you there and if you’re not careful, you’ll end up getting blown out on the first game of the season. 
 
In Matthew 24:44 Jesus said, “Therefore, you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect Him.” This book begins with letters to the churches bringing correction and commendation and there is much for us to heed, or to keep, for ourselves as well. 
 
 He writes first to the church at Ephesus, a port town near the Mediterranean and a main highway from Rome to Persia. It was the largest city in Asia Minor of about 500,000 and the capital of the Roman government in that area. 
 
 The church in Ephesus was founded by Paul and later pastored by Timothy. John Himself lived there before he was captured by the Romans, boiled in oil and exiled to the island of Patmos.

From verse one of this book we understand that this is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond servants the things which must shortly take place. Jesus then sent and communicated this Revelation by His angel to His bondservant, John. 
 
 In other words, God the Father wants us to receive this Revelation. John also wrote that whoever reads and hears and takes heed to the things written in the words of this prophecy will be blessed. 
 
 It’s called “The Revelation,” in the Greek, it is translated, the apocalypse, and it means, “The Revealing,” or “The Unveiling.” When people think of the word ‘apocalypse,’ mass destruction, chaos, and suffering, often come to mind, but God uses this book to reveal Jesus Christ, especially as Lord over all the earth in the latter days. He is the center of this book. 
 
 The Revelation was not sent to strike fear in the church, although for those in the world who don’t know Christ there could be considerable cause for concern. But for the church, it was sent to encourage and strengthen your faith, it was written so you might know that God wrote the end before there was even a beginning. He is Lord over all the nations of the earth and he is our Champion who has defeated death and won for us our victory. 
 
As we study through Revelation, you will see many symbols. Symbols are helpful, but sometimes difficult to interpret. 
 
Aviah and I were driving somewhere and she wanted to practice giving directions using her tablet. At one point, she said, “Turn right on ‘Springwood Doctor.’” Springwood Doctor? It took me a minute to realize she misinterpreted Dr. for doctor. It’s now a running joke between us. 
 
Symbols are helpful because they transcend time. Language changes, but signs and symbols more clearly convey the thoughts and intent of the message. They also communicate the message more powerfully: it’s one thing to say that a powerful world leader will come on the scene, it’s another to say, “The Beast is coming.” It’s one thing to say that Jesus has authority, but another to say that He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah! 
 
Before we begin our study, we should also understand the significance of Israel in latter-day events. There is a branch of Christian theology that believes that the nation of Israel is no longer significant spiritually and that all the promises given to Israel have now been given over to the church. This is sometimes referred to as replacement theology; Israel’s promises have been replaced by the promises given to the church, they say. I don’t believe that doctrine at all. 
 
I believe that God’s promises to Israel are eternal and that the words of Genesis 12 still apply, “Those who bless Israel will be blessed and those who curse Israel will be cursed.” I believe that doctrine should inform our foreign policy as a nation. The nation of Israel, therefore, becomes central to the understanding of the events of the last days. 
 
As we study through the book of Revelation, we will also tie in prophecies of Scripture from Jesus in the Gospels, the books of Daniel, Ezekiel, Zechariah, and many more. It’s amazing to see how prophecy throughout the Bible comes together in the unveiling of last days events in The Revelation. 
 
We are also going to connect biblical prophecy to the events that are happening in the world today. We need to look at current events through the lens of biblical prophecy. That makes this study extremely relevant and important for those concerned about the direction this world is heading in.

Life is filled with storms and difficulties and troubles. We need an anchor for our soul, a rock on which to stand. That rock is Christ, but it only becomes a foundation when we take hold of His word in all faith. 
 
Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.” 
 
When you take God at His word, when you take hold of that word for your life, in other words, when you live by faith, you will discover the blessings of believing. God wants you to build your life on the promises of God. Storms will come, this world is filled with troubles, evil is all around us, and a wise man will be ready for the storms by having an anchor for the soul; a rock on which to stand. 
 
The events of our study today take place in the northern kingdom of Israel. Life in Israel in those days was exceptionally dark and difficult. One of the sons of Ahab was reigning as king; the Hebrews of northern Israel had turned their back on Jehovah and were following after Molech, the Ashtoreth, Chemosh and all the other gods of this world. 
 
And yet, while the nation of Israel was turning their back on God, He was pursuing them. He made Himself known to them, demonstrating His power through the prophet Elisha, making known the promises of His Word, but also warning that their unfaithfulness would bring death to the nation. 
 
 If you turn your back on God, he will pursue you also. God will never quit, He’ll never leave or forsake you. 
In 2 Kings 7, Israel was in battle against Aram and at this point, they had besieged Samaria, the capital of northern Israel. 
 
Things had become so desperate in the city of Samaria that a donkey's head was selling for 80 shekels of silver and two cups of dove's dung was selling for five shekels of silver; probably to make dove’s dung soup. 
 
In the midst of this trouble God made an amazing promise; the famine would end overnight and a measure of fine flour would be selling for one shekel. 
 
As the story unfolds, it is filled with spiritual application and insight. We certainly understand trouble, trials, and difficulties, but what we need to understand is how to respond. When we respond with faith, blessings surely follow.

Have you ever considered that God has a purpose for your life? God loves to reconcile sinners to Himself; He sent His Son to seek and to save that which was lost. He knocks on the door of their heart, he calls out their name and invites sinners to have a relationship with the living God. 
 
But God does not leave people the way He found them; He transforms them from what they were into what God would have them to be, with His heart and His character. Although sometimes the process is sometimes messy with a few bumps along the way… 
 
Illus – Like when a couple, asleep in bed, heard a loud pounding on the door. The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain, says, “Could you give me a push?” “Not a chance,” says the husband, “it’s three o’clock in the morning!” He slams the door and returns to bed… 
 
In the chapters leading up to this, Paul brought up Israel as an example of hard hearts that refused when God sent His Son to reconcile them to Himself. They missed out on all the blessings God had for them, so God poured His grace on the Gentiles. Let us not be hard hearted, receive God’s offer of life and the blessings that come from being transformed. 
 
By the way, God isn’t finished with Israel. At the end of the age, at the return of Christ, Jesus Himself will return to Israel. He will set foot on the Mount of Olives and enter Jerusalem through the Eastern gate. And, the prophet Zechariah said, they will look on Him whom they have pierced. And though they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only son, He will pour out the Spirit of grace on them and they will receive the forgiveness of their sin based on the blood that Jesus shed on Calvary. And thus all Israel will be saved.

Jude and his brother James were half-brothers to Jesus. They did not believe Jesus was the Messiah nor follow His teaching when he was ministering on the earth. They grew up in the same house together. Can you imagine having Jesus as your big brother? How much pressure was that? Comedian Michael Jr. has a whole spiff on that. Very funny. 
 
James and Jude had problems, they would get in trouble, and can’t you imagine their mother saying, “Why can’t you boys be more like Jesus, James and Jude?” Or they would go to their mother with their problems and their mother would say, “Well what would Jesus do?” So she got them a bracelet. 
 
At one point in Jesus’ ministry, His mother and brothers came to speak to Him, thinking perhaps He was out of his senses, but Jesus responded, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” And then He said, “Whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.” 
 
After witnessing the resurrection, James and Jude not only became believers and followers of Jesus, James became the leader of the church in Jerusalem. It was such a radical transformation for Jude that opens this letter by referring to himself as a bondservant of the Lord Jesus the Messiah. 
 
 He writes this short letter to warn the church not to stray into dangerous false doctrines, which could harm the church and draw it into worldliness. 
 
 He challenges the church to be distinct from the world. The false teachers were worldly minded and devoid of the Spirit of the living God. That is the key to what he is writing; those who pursue the world do so because they don’t have the life of the Spirit. 
 
 The life of the Spirit is the difference; that’s what changes lives. Simply going to church is not what changes us; we are changed by receiving and living by the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus -- in the same way that going to a gym and watching other people work out won’t help you at all. 
 
 The entire theme of this letter is found in verse 3; “I felt it necessary to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”

We now come to the last section in 1 John. In many ways, these verses are some of the most practical in this letter. He began this letter with an invitation to experience God, “What we have heard, what we have seen with our own eyes, what we beheld and our hands handled – the Word of life – that life was manifested, and we have seen and bear witness and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us – what we have seen and heard we now proclaim to you also, so that you also may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.” 
The verses we’re studying today are like a bookend because he takes those words of foundational faith and shows us what it looks like in living victoriously. In other words, these verses are very practical because they take faith and apply it to life. 
The theme is becoming overcomers by faith. Not only are we called to be victorious, rather than defeated by the world, we have confidence to live boldly and to believe that whatever we ask we receive from Him, when we ask according to His will. 
We are in a spiritual battle and need to understand how to overcome so we do more than merely survive on our way to heaven, but actually live victoriously and confidently. We need these practical words from John.

John had a very special relationship to Jesus. He often referred to himself as the apostle whom Jesus loved. When John wrote this letter, love was the main thing he wanted to write about; it was the main thing he wanted the church to understand. That’s because it’s the most important part of our relationship to God and it’s the theme of our message today. 
God never intended to be your religion, it was His heart from the beginning to draw you into a relationship with Him. The way you see God has everything to do with how you approach Him, how you relate to Him. God loves us as a father loves his own son. He has given us the spirit of adoption by which we call Him, “Abba, father!” 
My wife’s dad was a chiropractor and when she got to be old enough, he gave her an opportunity to be a receptionist at his clinic. A patient would come in and say, “I’m here to see Dr. Dunn.” She would then go back to one of the treatment rooms, stick her head in and say, “Your next appointment is here, Daddy.” That’s how she saw him, so that’s what she called him. 
How do you see God? What kind of relationship do you have with Him? There is a church in Mexico where the people walk there on their knees on an annual pilgrimage. The pastor has taught them that God is so ominous, so enthroned on high in the glory of majesty, that they must completely humble themselves by coming on this pilgrimage on their knees, some of them crawling for miles. 
God shows us a different relationship. He wants us to relate to Him as our Father. God most certainly does sit enthroned on high in the glory of majesty and He is the judge of all the earth, but He has invited you to such an intimate relationship that you can call Him “Abba, Father.” 
My earliest memories of a pastor is from when I was only four or five years old. I don’t remember his name, or even the name of the church, but I do remember my brother and me playfully wrestling with him on the steps of the platform. He represented the heart of God to me and I saw Him as loving, gracious, approachable and kind. 
You see Jesus having a special relationship to children also. In the Gospels, you read that children came up to Him that He might lay His hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, “Let the children alone, do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 
On the triumphant entry Jesus came into Jerusalem on the foal of a donkey and cleansed the temple. Afterward, when the chief priests and the scribes saw all the wonderful things that He had done and the children who were calling out to Him, saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became indignant, and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes, and have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babes you have prepared praise for yourself? 
Jesus had a special place in His heart for children, could it be because that’s the type of relationship God wants to have with us?

These last two weeks have been emotionally difficult for our family as we’ve gone through the trial and then the penalty phase of the one who killed our daughter. 
 
Many of you are no doubt aware by now that the jury unanimously came back with the verdict of guilty in the charge of aggravated murder of our daughter. The jury was then asked to decide whether he should be given the opportunity of parole after 30 years. The jury voted 11-1 that he should be given the sentence of life without the possibility of parole. 
 
Our family waited a long time for this to come to a close so we can put all of this behind us. We knew the trial would be difficult, to have to relive that pain over and over, but it was much more difficult than I thought. 
 
The trial itself was a long and difficult process and its adversarial nature only added to the pain. The last day of legal proceedings, however, was almost surreal. 
 
Our family had the opportunity to speak directly to the jury during the sentencing phase of the trial. Our daughter, Chelsea, spoke about how close she, Nicole and Victoria were to each other and how that was taken from them. Chris, Nicole’s husband, told them that we held her memorial service on their four-year anniversary. He talked about how difficult it was to explain this to the children, how Ethan likes to sit in the window seat in an airplane in the hopes of getting a glimpse of his mother in heaven. He talked about Ethan not having a mother to be there for Mother’s Day tea, but thankful for a loving grandmother, that’s Jordi, to be there for him. And I had an opportunity to speak to the jury as well. 
 
But the surreal moment came after the jury came back with the sentence of life without the possibility of parole. The jury was dismissed and the judge was about to impose the sentence, but first, Jordi and I had an opportunity to speak directly to the man who killed our daughter. 
 
I wanted him to understand how much hurt he has inflicted on so many people; on our family, on the woman he brutally raped in Eugene, on the correctional officers he attacked, and the pain he brought to his own mother, father, and brother and sister. 
 
I then said, “Jamie, look at me… In behalf of my family, I offer you forgiveness. Take this as an opportunity to change your life. This has to stop. Your life is not over, there is yet an opportunity to redeem your life. Someday you will stand before the judge of all the earth and give an account of your life. If you want to do anything to help us, then change your own life. This has to end.” 
 
Then, I was so proud of Jordi, because she also stood before him and offered her forgiveness and told him that she prays for him every day. 
 
After that, the judge asked him to stand and said, “Do you have anything to say?” He responded, “I ask for forgiveness.” Those were the first words of remorse that he had ever spoken and I thank God for the opportunity to break through to him. It was truly an amazing moment. 
 
Here’s what I’ve come to understand, God has purpose in our pain. Nowhere does scripture promise us that we will never encounter evil, or difficulty, or experience pain, but God does promise to be with us, even through the valley of the shadow of death. Even there, we fear no evil because God is with us. 
 
The story of 1 Kings 17 takes place in the northern kingdom of Israel during their darkest and most evil days. They had rejected God and the result was predictable. Their hard hearts brought hard times. God had declared a drought through the prophet Elijah. During the drought, God instructed Elijah to go to Zarephath. There, he was told, a widow would provide for him. 
She was kind to Elijah and allowed him to stay in an upper room on the roof, she provided meals from the bowl of flour and jar of oil that God miraculously replenished. 
 
But tragedy strikes when the woman’s son became sick and died. This is where we gain insight for our own faith.

Most Bible scholars believe the writer of this letter is none other than the famous apostle John who was perhaps the disciple closest to Jesus. At this point in his life he was considered an elder statesman. He was the only disciple of Jesus still living. He walked with Jesus, he ate the last supper with Him, he watched as Jesus healed the blind and caused the lame to walk, as Jesus cast out demons and calmed the wind and the waves at His command. John physically touched the resurrected Lord. 
He’s writing because the church is being disturbed by false teachers who are distorting the gospel with devastating consequences to those who follow their heresies. 
John knows that strengthening their faith and establishing them solidly on the rock of Jesus Christ is the best response to false teachers. This book was written exactly for that purpose; John minces no words as he lays down the foundation for their faith. 
There are several themes that John develops in this letter. One theme he comes back to over and over is the importance of what we love. Love is a transforming power and what you love is prophetic of your future. 
These false teachers had found a way to wrap religion around worldliness and John was not impressed. Truth is not something to be trifled with or manipulated; it’s something to follow and be transformed by. 
These false teachers loved the world more than they loved God and that was the problem. What you love is prophetic of your future.

In his Gospel, John refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved. In fact, when Jesus was dying on the cross, he asked John to take care of His mother. 
He was the disciple sitting closest to Jesus at the Last Supper. When Jesus said that one of them would betray Him, the disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. Peter therefore whispered to John, “Ask Him who it is.” 
After the resurrection, when the women came and reported that Jesus was not in the tomb, both Peter and John ran to the tomb and John makes a special point to tell us that he ran faster than Peter. Although when they arrived at the tomb, John only looked in, while Peter immediately entered the tomb. 
John spent his later years ministering in Ephesus until he was exiled to the island of Patmos where many believe he wrote this letter as well as the book of Revelation. At this point in his life he is considered an elder statesman and as the last living apostle who was eyewitness to everything Jesus did and said. He has tremendous authority in the church. 
John writes this letter to strengthen them in their walk of faith. False teachers are troubling the church and Paul warns them of their dangers, but he knows that the greatest impact will come when he strengthens their faith and draws them to a closer relationship to the Lord. In fact, drawing near to the Lord and walking in His love is perhaps the greatest theme out of this letter. 
These themes are a great follow-up to Welcome Weekend where many made professions of faith and many recommitted their lives to the Lord. God wants us to walk victoriously as we live out our days on this earth and this letter gives us some of the greatest keys to that victory.
