I want us to look at the story of a man who comes to Jesus seeking answers for his life. It’s an important story because many people today are also seeking answers. At one time or another most people come to the point where they ask the really big questions in life, “Why am I here? What is the meaning of life? What will happen to me when I die?” 
 
 When I run into people in high school or college I like to ask what they’re planning on doing with their lives. Usually their answer has something to do with the career they would like to pursue. But if they think about it more they’ll talk about wanting to get married and having some kids and then maybe retiring and doing some traveling. But then what? 
 
 In the big picture of things, this life is only a small part. We’re all going to die and face eternity. The statistics on death are pretty impressive; something like one out of every one persons is going to die. And then what? 
 
 This life we’ve been given is a precious gift and God meant us to spend it with meaning and purpose. Many people are searching because there’s something missing, there’s a void in their lives, but to quote the famous American philosopher and country western singer, Waylon Jennings, they’re “looking for love in all the wrong places.” 
 
 Which reminds me of a story of a drunk guy down on his hands and knees under a streetlight looking for something. A police officer approached and said, “Sir, did you lose something?”… Here’s the thing, it isn’t any good looking for truth if you’re looking in the wrong place. 
 
 Jesus said, “I am the Truth, the Way, and the Life.” In another place the scripture says, “All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found in Him.”

This is Peter’s last letter and he writes with a sense of urgency, knowing that his time on earth is coming to an end. He’s writing to stir them up in their faith, preparing them for the trials and difficulties he knows will soon be upon them. 
Earlier he wrote that God has given us everything we need for life and godliness through His divine power and that He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them we might become partakers of the divine nature. In fact, it’s only in partaking of the divine nature that a person is transformed. 
Here in chapter 3, he writes prophetically about the condition of the last days, that mockers will come in their mocking, saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? Nothing has changed, everything is as it has been from the beginning.” 
But when they maintain this, it escapes their notice, Peter writes, that the earth was formed out of water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded in the days of Noah. In other words, God has destroyed the world before through a cataclysmic flood in the last days, and the world will be destroyed again, but this time through fire. 
What’s interesting is that in Matthew 24, Jesus said, “The coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, they were marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so shall the coming of the Son of Man be.” 
When you look at what’s happening in the world today, there is a striking resemblance to the days of Noah. Therefore, Peter’s words are sent by God to stir us up in our faith because difficult days are coming upon the earth and there needs to be a sense of urgency in how we live right now.

This is the second of Peter’s letters and it’s the last of his letters. He knows his time here is coming to an end so, in many ways, these are his last words. There is a sense of urgency to what he writes. At this point, the church is under heavy persecution and he writes to strengthen their faith and help them to live the victorious, effective life that God intends. 
Last words have great significance. Some last words are interesting; Gen. John Sedgwick was in a battle in the Civil War and his last words were, “They couldn’t kill an elephant at this distance.” Groucho Marx, ever the comedian, said, “This is no way to live!” A priest came to the bedside of the famous playwright, Wilson Mizner, and said, “I’m sure you want to talk to me.” Mizner responded to the priest, “Why should I want to talk to you? I was just talking to your boss.” 
Martyn Lloyd Jones, famous pastor and writer, said, “Don’t pray for healing; don’t hold me back from the glory.” DL Moody’s last words were, “Earth recedes, heaven opens before me! If this is death, it is sweet. God is calling me; I must go.” 
Peter’s last words were written to believers in Asia Minor to stir them up to stronger faith. They needed stronger faith to live the effective, victorious life because their faith was under attack. The Roman Emperor, Nero, decided that Christians had to be eliminated and set about on an empire wide persecution. 
The church was also under spiritual attack as false teachers, loaded with distorted, destructive heresies, were trying to put a religious cover over worldly and fleshly sensuality. 
Peter’s letter is straightforward, straight up, and powerfully effective in stirring us up to live the effective Christian life God is calling us to live because our Christian faith is also under attack from without and within. However, at the same time, difficult times also purify the church.
