In Luke chapter 5, Jesus is just beginning His public ministry in the area around the Sea of Galilee. One day He was standing by the shoreline teaching the Word of God and multitudes were pressing all around Him. 
 
Jesus saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake so He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. He sat down and began teaching the multitudes from the boat. This would have created some distance so He could address the whole multitude, but the water would also have become a natural amplifier of His voice. 
 
But the real point of the story is what happened after He finished teaching the multitudes, He turned to Simon and said, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." This was not about teaching Simon to catch fish, Simon caught fish for a living, he knew all about fishing. 
 
This was about making Simon a disciple of Jesus Christ. And that's where we must put ourselves into the story because God's heart is that we also become disciples of Jesus Christ. 
 
This story is filled with amazing insight into what it means to become a disciple and the transforming power that will have on our lives when we apply those same truths. 
 
But before we look at this story, let's step back and take a broader view for a moment. First of all, what does it mean to be a disciple? The root meaning of the word is "one who is learning." But it has a deeper meaning than just being a student. To be a disciple meant to follow after the Teacher and to become like Him in character, thought, word, decisions, and manner of living. 
 
To find a teacher in those days meant that you would learn how to live your life; his wisdom would become your wisdom, his character would become your character. You can take classes and learn how to have a career, but where do you learn how to have a life? That's what it meant to become a disciple of Jesus Christ. That's what we need today. Becoming a Christian is not just a matter of having your sins forgiven and your name written in the Lamb's book of life; it's about becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. It's about having His wisdom become your wisdom and His character become your character and His manner of life become your manner of life. 
 
Another thing we should also learn from this story is that God loves to use unlikely people. It gives Him great glory to see those who are simple grow in wisdom and stature of God. 
 
At the northern end of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus will receive four disciples and they’re all fishermen. How unlikely is that? Jesus will turn the world upside down using simple fishermen? He's going to take a tax collector, hated and despised by everyone, except by other tax collectors, and make him a disciple of the Son of God? How unlikely is that? Then to the other extreme, He's going to take Saul, a legalistic religious Jew, trained in the highest universities, and a violent persecutor of Christians and then make that man a disciple of Jesus Christ? How unlikely is that? 
 
Who are you? Simple? Unsophisticated? Good, you're just the one God is looking for…

This is the final weekend message out of the book of Hebrews. I am absolutely going to miss this book; it’s one of the richest, most inspiring letters that challenges our faith. 
In the verses we’re studying today, he brings them to a grand conclusion, challenging them to recognize the value of this great salvation they received and to respond by taking hold of it with strong faith, for without faith it is impossible to please God. 
He then gives them an interesting warning, “Those things that can be shaken will be shaken in order that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.” What does that mean? It’s important we understand because it appears that many things in this world are ready to be shaken. Make sure you take hold of those things which will remain. 
If you take hold of the promises of God and strengthen your faith, it will transform how you live because when you recognize the value of what God has done for you, the response is to show gratitude and the desire to offer God something in return.

This is the scripture we most associate with the celebration of Christmas. We love this story because it gives us a picture of what was happening in the world and the need that we have for a Savior. This chapter puts it all in context for us and helps us understand the greatness of God in meeting our greatest need. 
 
 A decree went out from Caesar Augustus. Who was Caesar Augustus? Many consider him the greatest of all the Caesars. He was chosen by Julius Caesar to succeed him when he adopted him in his will. He was born by the name Octavian which simply means, “Eighth,” but because he had been adopted by Julius Caesar, he was given the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian. However, the title of “Emperor” was not enough, so the Senate sought a more regal title for him. "King" was not sufficient, so the title Augustus was chosen for him, which means, “Majestic Grandeur.” The Roman senate voted that he was a god. They even named a month on the calendar after him – August. 
 
Among Roman rulers, only Julius Caesar and Augustus had months named after them permanently —though this wasn't for lack of trying on the part of later emperors. For a time, May was changed to the month of Claudius and the infamous Nero tried to April to Neronius. But these changes were short-lived, and only Julius and Augustus have had two-millennia-worth of staying power. 
 
To God Almighty, however, the great Caesar Augustus would have been just "Little Caesar." God used him for His purposes; to move Mary in her third trimester to Bethlehem so the prophesies of Christ’s birth would be fulfilled. Jesus, seemingly born in obscurity, would be the Savior of the world, but what was to become of Little Caesar? 
 
Isaiah 40:17, 23-24, All the nations are as nothing before Him, they are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless… It is He who reduces rulers to nothing, who makes the judges of the earth meaningless. Scarcely have they been planted, scarcely have they been sown, scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth, and He merely blows on them, and they wither, and the storm carries them away like stubble. 
 
 When you see God moving through declarations of an Emperor that causes a terrible inconvenience to a very pregnant young woman not wanting to travel, but needs to travel in order to fulfill the prophecies and purposes of God, it helps us understand that God works supernaturally through natural means. 
 
 These verses in Luke chapter 2 are a reminder again that God is answering man's greatest need in bringing light to a lost, lonely, and broken world.
