The writer is challenging them in their faith. They had come to a decision point; a Y in the road, you might say. Should they choose the path that goes back to where they came? They were Jews who had received Jesus Christ as their Messiah and Savior, but they were being pressured and even persecuted by other Jews living in Jerusalem to fall away from their faith in Christ and to go back to the laws of Moses, back to the ways of the Old Testament. 
The writer to these Hebrews heard that they were struggling, so he writes to remind them of all they have in Jesus. “Why would you neglect so great a salvation?” he challenged. 
Sometimes Christians struggle in their faith as well. Some have worldly friends that try to influence them to go back to their old ways. “Don’t you remember the ‘good ol’ days’ in the world when you use to party and embarrass yourself and feel yucky in the morning?” 
It might remind us of when Israel spent 40 years in the desert murmuring and complaining against God and wishing for the good ol’ days when they were slaves in Egypt. Something is wrong with the perspective. It’s blindness that looks back and calls them the ‘good ol’ days’ when in fact God’s plan for you is to give you a future and a hope. 
They needed to be strengthened in faith and so the writer challenges them, “You have need of endurance. Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward,” he wrote in Chapter 10. 
They were at a decision point, they had come to a Y in the road. Those who struggle in their faith need to choose the path of greatest blessing, for there is great reward for those who seek God, who pursue relationship with Him, who press into their faith and do not shrink back. 
In Chapter 11 he reminded them of the heroes of faith from the Old Testament who endured many trials and difficulties and suffered much, but they were looking to the reward. They had a hope fixed before them; they had made their mind, for them it was settled, the question was answered. 
Then, in the earlier verses of Chapter 12 he challenged them to lay aside every encumbrance and run with endurance the race that was set before them. In other words, choose the way of faith. You believe that there is a God? Wonderful, you do well, but even the demons believe that. Those who come to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. That’s the path you must choose. 
In the verses we’re studying today, he challenges them to make straight paths for their feet. In other words, if you choose to go back, if you choose the old ways, the old life, you are choosing a path of great difficulty. 
It reminds me of the challenge that Joshua brought to Israel, “Choose you this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the people in whose land you are now living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” 
It’s also like when Elisha called the people together on Mount Carmel and challenged them, saying, “How long will you waiver between two opinions? If Baal is God then serve him, but if Jehovah is God, then serve Him.” 
When you run the race that is set before you, you are making your paths straight, you are choosing the path that brings healing. He then gets very straightforward and practical as he shows them what it means to live on the path of healing.

The writer is challenging them to arise in their faith and that applies to us as well. We need to run the race set before us and to run with endurance. In other words, there are many troubles and trials that come from the turbulence of life and, by faith, we run the race set before us, enduring many troubles. 
They were being pressured and even persecuted by the other Jews in Jerusalem to go back to the ways of the Old Testament, back to the laws of Moses, and instead of giving in, instead of giving up, they needed to press on and be stronger in their faith. 
In chapter 10 he wrote, “You have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.” Enduring trouble is part of faith. At least it should be. 
In chapter 11 he reminded them of Moses who chose to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin; considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than all the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward. He endured much ill-treatment because of faith. 
Moses had everything a man in the world could want. He grew up as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He had position, he had privilege, he had access to wealth and all the accouterments that come with it, and no doubt he could have had as many wives as he wanted. But he wanted more than that; those things are all tied to the world, his sights were heavenward. 
In chapter 12 he connects the enduring of trouble and trials to the discipline and instruction of the Lord. In other words, God uses difficulties for our instruction; it strengthens faith when we look to Him in the midst of the storm. 
But if they shrink back, if they give in to the pressures and persecution and go backward in their faith, they can be sure that they will receive discipline from the Lord, for those whom the Lord loves He disciplines. 
And in a same way, God is also our Father and if He brings discipline, it is for our instruction, it’s to strengthen our faith, it’s for our good.

There is something very exciting about watching a race. Not a presidential race, that’s more akin to having your teeth pulled without Novocain. No, I’m talking about when our kids were on the track team in high school. My favorite part was when they rounded the last quarter and made the final sprint toward the finish line. It’s inspiring to see them push themselves to the limit, enduring the pain, reaching for the finish with everything they have. 
The writer to the Hebrews uses running a race as an analogy to inspire their faith. He encourages them to endure the persecution and troubles from the pressure coming from the Jews to return to the ways of the Old Testament, saying, “Do not throw away your confidence which has a great reward.” 
He reminded them in chapter 11 of the heroes of faith, both men and women, inspiring stories they knew very well. They accomplished great feats because their faith was central to who they were. Their faith defined their lives. 
In the same way, our faith should define us as well. When our daughter was killed two years ago, I realized that we must be very careful not to allow that tragedy to define our lives. Our lives should not be defined by our tragedies or our triumphs, our lives should be defined by our faith. 
There are keys to endurance, there are insights for staying on course, for fighting the good fight of faith, for being victorious as we run, as we live our lives. That’s what he gives them in these verses. We need this ourselves; we need faith that endures the turbulence and trouble in the world today. We need to fight the good fight of faith, we need to finish the course set before us, but we need more than to just endure, we need to be victorious. The world needs people defined by faith.

The 2016 World Series will stand out as one of the most remarkable in history as the Chicago Cubs came back from a 3-1 deficit to win game seven in extra innings. There’s little doubt that the MVP, Ken Zobrist, will someday be remembered in baseball’s Hall of Fame after playing on two World Series winning teams in a row. 
He’ll join other hall of fame greats such as Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Dizzy Dean, and Lou Gehrig, men who were considered some of baseball’s greatest because of the amazing feats they accomplished. When Ty Cobb retired, he held 90 major-league records, some of which still hold today. 
But when it comes down to it, it’s just baseball. The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 accomplished great feats also, but the significance is eternal. They were men and women that influenced the world around them because they had faith. 
The writer of Hebrews reminds them of these heroes of faith to inspire them to stand strong in their own faith. They were Jewish believers in Jesus Christ, but they were being pressured and even persecuted by the Jews around them to go back to the ways of the Old Testament, back to that which is just a shadow and a copy of what they had in Christ. 
People who are strong in faith, however, are people of influence. Instead of being drawn backward by the people around them, they need to grow stronger in their faith and they should be the ones who are influencing the people around them. 
That’s a great lesson for all of us. What influence are you having in your “sphere of influence"? Are they influencing you or are you influencing them? These heroes of faith should inspire us to step up in our faith as well. 
These verses show us what living by faith looks like. God wants you to live by faith, not just believing that there is a God, but that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

Hebrews is one of the most important books in the Bible because it shows us some of the richest, most beautiful insights into what God has done for us through His Son Jesus Christ. We see Jesus like in no other book of the Bible. It strengthens our faith and draws us to appreciate this great salvation that God has given us. 
He’s writing to Hebrews, or Jews, who are believers in Jesus Christ as the long-awaited Messiah. But they are struggling in their faith because they are being pressured by the other Jews in Jerusalem to go back to the ways of the Old Testament, back to the laws of Moses, back to the shadow of the thing, of which Christ is the reality, the substance. 
Line by line, he shows them that Jesus is superior in every way. Jesus is greater than Moses, He is greater than Solomon, greater than Jonah, greater than even Abraham. He is greater than the angels, He is greater than all the priests of the Old Testament, He is greater than the Sabbath and he is even greater than the temple itself. 
Why go back to the old life when what you have in Christ is superior to anything else? There is nothing better than Christ. There is no greater truth, there is no greater salvation. 
When you recognize how great a salvation that you have received and when the eyes of your heart are opened to see what great love God has poured out upon you through His Son, how should you respond? That’s the main point of chapter 10. 
They were being pressured to go back to the old life and the old ways that were only a shadow of what they now have in Christ. Instead of falling backward, he challenges them to press forward, to draw nearer to God with a sincere heart and in full assurance of faith. 
This applies to many people today. Many are stuck in what I call the ‘miserable middle.’ They believe Jesus purchased salvation for them and they have received the offer of life, but pressures of life, the worries and cares of the world and the desire for other things come in and choke out their spiritual life and they find themselves in the miserable middle. 
When you understand what a great salvation you have and what God has done for you through His Son, Jesus Christ, you should press forward, you should draw nearer to God; with a sincere heart and with full assurance of faith.

He’s writing to Hebrews, or Jews, who are believers in Jesus Christ as the long-awaited Messiah. But they are struggling in their faith because they are being pressured by the other Jews in Jerusalem to go back to the ways of the Old Testament, back to the laws of Moses, back to the shadow of the thing, of which Christ is the reality, the substance.

This book is written to believers in Jesus Christ who are Hebrews, or, in other words, Jews. These Jewish believers are very likely in Jerusalem, the birthplace of Christianity. That would make it the oldest, most a long-standing church of that day. 
Since it’s the oldest church, it might be reasonable to assume it would be the most mature church. But that wasn’t the case at all; it wasn’t growing into maturity, it was in danger of going backward. They were being drawn back into Judaism, back to the ways of the Old Testament, back to the laws of Moses. They were moving back to the shadow of the thing, but the substance belongs to Christ. 
He writes to challenge them to grow deeper in their faith. By this time, they ought to have been teachers of spiritual things, but they needed again for someone to teach them the elementary principles of spiritual things. In other words, they had come to need milk and not solid food. 
We also should be challenged by these words. Why is it that some people don’t grow in their faith, why is it that some people don’t increase in spiritual maturity? In one of the parables of Jesus, He taught that the word of God is sown like a farmer sowing seed and that the different types of soils are like different kinds of hearts. 
Some people hear the word of God, “but the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” 
The writer of the book of Hebrews makes clear to us that in these last days God has spoken to us in His Son. He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature. God sent His Son with the message of His heart, but He didn’t send His Son just to give us an education, He sent Jesus to seek and to save that which was lost; to reconcile the world to Himself; God sent Jesus to make a way for you to have a relationship to God as your Father. 
We must be careful not to neglect so great a salvation. If God sent His Son, we must receive Him and we must receive all that He has in store for us. His desire is to bless our lives and to bring us into greater faith and greater spiritual maturity.

The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish believers in Christ. Many believe it was written to the church in Jerusalem, the birthplace of Christianity, but now a church that was struggling. Many were being drawn back into Judaism, back to the ways of the Old Testament, back to the laws of Moses. 
This book was written to accomplish three important things in these Jewish believers. First, to show them the supremacy of Christ over all things. He is greater than all the angels, he is greater than Moses, he is the fulfillment of all that is in the Old Testament and whereas God used to speak in the Old Testament through the prophets, God now speaks through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 
Secondly, he writes to warn them of the dangers of unbelief. We’ll see some of that in the verses we are studying today in chapter 4. 
And finally, he writes to strengthen their faith; to draw them back into a place of completely trusting in the word that God sent through His Son. We find some of the greatest verses on faith in the book of Hebrews in the entire Bible. 
In chapters 3 and 4, he reminds them of one of Israel’s famous failures when they tested God in the wilderness and hardened their hearts with a lack of faith. It was a turning point in the history of Israel and it wasn’t good. 
Because of that lack of faith, because they hardened their hearts and wouldn’t trust by taking God at His word, that entire generation died in the wilderness. They did not enter into the land God had promised them. 
But more than that, they did not enter into His rest. The meaning and significance of God’s rest is extremely important. It’s a major theme that runs through the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation. It’s absolutely critical that we understand what that means because the promise of rest is the promise of not just of eternal life, it has everything to do with the victorious life God intends for us right here and right now.
