There is a lot of similarity between this letter that Paul wrote to Titus and the letters he wrote to Timothy. Together these letters are often called the pastoral letters because both Timothy and Titus were overseeing groups of churches. Timothy was overseeing churches in the city of Ephesus and Titus was overseeing churches on the island of Crete which is just south of Greece in the Mediterranean Sea. 
We don’t have much specific information about when Paul himself was in Crete, but from what we read in the book of Acts as well as other accounts of Paul’s life we can make some fairly good conclusions. 
First, we know Paul spent considerable time in the city of Corinth, a major city in southern Greece. Titus was with Paul and the influence of that ministry would easily have touched Crete as well. 
Secondly, after Paul was arrested in Jerusalem and sat in prison for two years without facing charges, he finally appealed to Caesar. He was then handed to a Roman centurion named Julius and placed onboard a ship headed for Rome. Along the way they stopped and spent time in Crete. As winter was approaching and the harbor not ideal for spending the winter, the captain decided to risk sailing for the port of Phoenix on the north side of the island, although Paul advised against it. 
 As they were making their way, trying to stay close to shore, a violent nor’easter wind came out of Europe, blasting against their ship and forcing them into the open seas of the Mediterranean. They fought through that hurricane force storm for two weeks; almost losing their lives. Finally, they shipwrecked on the island of Malta. 
Most historians believe that Paul was released at his first trial since there were no charges against him. After this, many surmise that he led a great revival in Rome and then traveled to Greece, spending time on the island of Crete, making his way toward Ephesus where he was finally arrested again by the Emperor Nero who then had him executed. 
This letter to Titus is Paul’s instruction to “set things in order” in Crete, to establish leaders, to strengthen the churches and to strengthen his own spiritual life. 
At one point in this short letter he tells Titus that he must instruct the people in the churches to be ready for every good deed and to be gracious and kind to those in the world, showing every consideration because we were once ourselves spending our lives in malice and worldliness. 
In other words, we were once spending our lives very badly, but God in his kindness has redeemed us. Therefore, we should spend our lives differently. He is transforming us; it should translate into how we spend our lives.

This is the final letter from Paul’s pen. He is writing to his young son in the faith, Timothy. Paul has been arrested again and knows that the time of his departure has come. Everything has changed in the Roman Empire. Where once he could speak freely of the gospel, he has now been arrested as a criminal. The infamous Emperor Nero has systematically begun to arrest Christians; many were killed, many were tortured. 
Paul writes to Timothy to be bold in his faith. “Don’t be ashamed of the gospel and don’t be ashamed of me,” Paul wrote, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love and power and a sound mind.” 
The tide is also turning today. For many years the church has enjoyed tremendous freedom. I’m not sure that we’ve taken full advantage of the opportunity, but this much is certain, the tide is turning against us. The days are getting more dangerous as we speak. There should be a sense of urgency in our faith as well. 
What do you say when you know you don’t have much time left? Everything takes on a greater sense of priority everything changes in perspective. 
In these verses Paul gets very personal with Timothy. He wants him to think about his own life and the value and treasure of what has been entrusted to him. As an illustration, he uses the various vessels in a house. There are cups, vases, bowls, serving dishes, decorative pieces, bins for trash, and not too long ago, people had spittoons and buckets for food waste. We had one and affectionately called it our slop bucket. And don’t forget the porcelain vessel also known as a toilet. 
Some are vessels of honor and others are vessels of dishonor. In a similar way, we should also consider the value and treasure that God is given us and decide that we want our lives to be vessels of honor. What is the value of what God has given you? We are called to live as vessels of honor unto God.

After Joseph turned 17, his life fell apart. He went from favorite son to slave, then slave to prisoner; 13 long years of suffering in Egypt! 
 
Then, in Genesis 41, life dramatically changed for Joseph. One night Pharaoh had a dream and no one could interpret it. Word got to Pharaoh regarding Joseph’s ability to interpret dreams and he was immediately prepared for the ruler’s presence. 
 
God gave Joseph the ability to interpret both of Pharaoh’s dreams, they were in fact, one and the same; 7 years of abundance would be followed by 7 years of famine. 
 
After interpreting the dreams, Joseph proposed an administrative solution; store 20% of the grain harvested during each of the 7 good years to use as food during the 7 years of famine. 
 
Pharaoh was so pleased with the recommendation that he elevated Joseph to a newly created post; from prisoner to second only to Pharaoh over all in Egypt! 
 
He was finally free from prison; but was he free?

This is Paul’s last letter to Timothy, his son in the faith, and it is the last letter that came from his pen. Timothy is in Ephesus, leading the churches that came out of the great revival that happened there several years earlier. 
Paul is writing to give Timothy instruction in how to lead those churches, how to confront certain teachers that were teaching strange doctrines, and what qualities of godly character he should look for in those who will lead the church. 
Paul also writes as a mentor to Timothy personally, telling him to discipline himself for the purpose of godliness, to take pains with these things, to be absorbed in them, and to persevere in these things. 
This second letter to Timothy is even more personal. Paul knew his time in this world was coming to an end. “The time of my departure has come,” Paul wrote, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.” 
Knowing that he didn’t have much time left, he wrote one of the most personal, the most compelling, the most inspiring, and one of the most quoted letters that came from his pen. It’s powerfully moving and inspiring to anyone who considers Paul his mentor. 
Paul had arrived in Rome because he had appealed to Caesar. He had been arrested in Jerusalem for protective custody, but was transferred to Caesarea when it was discovered there was a plot to kill him. He sat in prison in Caesarea for two years without ever facing charges. Finally, he appealed to Caesar and was sent to Rome. 
In Rome he was allowed to rent his own private quarters, though he was constantly under Roman guard. What followed was nothing short of amazing as a great revival broke out in Rome, though he was a prisoner in chains. The whole praetorian guard heard the gospel through Paul. Many came to visit the famous apostle and hundreds came to faith in Christ. 
Many historians believe that when Paul appeared before Caesar he was exonerated and released since there was no basis for charges against him. However, the growing Christian movement gave Emperor Nero an opportunity. In 64 A.D. a fire broke out in Rome that destroyed nearly three quarters of the city. Many citizens of Rome began to suspect that Nero himself had the city set on fire so he could go around the Senate and rebuild it as he wished, becoming the great architect of the city. 
When Nero saw there was growing suspicion against him, he blamed the Christians, had Paul executed, and ordered the torture and persecution of Christians throughout the city. 
Paul realized that his ministry was coming to an end; he had been poured out as a drink offering, so he writes Timothy with a sense of urgency. 
I want us to pay special attention to verse seven which in many ways becomes the theme of this entire letter. “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind.”

Paul also instructs Timothy regarding the qualities of godly character to look for in those who would be leaders in the church. That list of godly qualities is a perfect definition of spiritual maturity that we should all desire. 
In chapter 4, Paul writes words of instruction for Timothy personally. At this point, Timothy is still a young man, yet is given great responsibility, so Paul writes to give him godly wisdom for how to conduct his own life and to keep growing spiritually himself. Paul is his mentor and this part of the letter are words a mentor would say to his student. 
These words for Timothy personally should also be applied to our lives personally. In many ways, Paul is like a mentor to us; by writing these letters, he has taken us under his wing also. Anyone wanting to grow spiritually should take these words to heart.

We’ve recently been looking at the ministry of Timothy as he was leading the churches in Ephesus. Paul was not there himself because he had been arrested, had appealed to Caesar and was on his way to Rome to make his appeal. 
Let’s pick up Paul’s story and the lessons of faith that come out of it. Paul had determined to go to Jerusalem, eager to share the gospel with his fellow Jews, but they didn’t exactly receive him warmly. A crowd took hold of him intending to kill him, but a Roman commander got word of it and rushed down with some soldiers and took Paul into protective custody. 
When the Roman commander heard there was a plot against Paul, he sent him to the Roman governor at Caesarea. He was kept as a prisoner there for two years yet was never charged with any wrongdoing. Finally, because he was a Roman citizen, he appealed to Caesar. 
Paul was put in the charge of a Roman centurion named Julius who was responsible to get him to Rome. They set sail from Caesarea, but along the way they encountered a storm that raged for two full weeks. Can you imagine being in a first century sailing ship in the middle of the Mediterranean fighting a hurricane force storm for two weeks? 
All hope was gradually lost. They had already thrown the ship’s cargo overboard, and then a few days after that they threw the ship’s tackle overboard. But then Paul stood up in their midst and urged them to take courage because an angel of God had assured him that he would stand before Caesar and that God had granted safety to those sailing with him. 
So Paul stood up and said, “Keep up your courage, men, for I believe God that it will turn out exactly as I have been told. But we must run aground on a certain island.” 
They came to an island about midnight. Fearing they might run aground somewhere on the rocks, they cast four anchors from the stern and wished for daybreak. When day came they observed a certain bay with a beach and decided to drive the ship onto it if they could. Casting off their anchors, they hoisted the foresail to the wind and headed for the beach, but they struck a reef and the prow of the vessel stuck fast. Soon, the force of the waves began to break up the stern of the ship, so they commanded those that could swim to jump overboard and get to land and the rest followed, some on planks, and others on various things from the ship. 
Storms and even shipwrecks come in everyone’s life, but storms and shipwrecks don’t have to shipwreck your faith. You can trust God through every stormy gale; you have an anchor for your soul. 
In Acts chapter 28, we pick up the story just after they made it safely to shore. They found themselves on the island of Malta; cold, wet, beaten down, weak from exhaustion and being seasick for two weeks. But then we see the favor of God on Paul and therefore on all of them. 
What do you do when your ship is broken and you’ve come to the end of yourself? 
First, thank God for what you have, and then, begin to rebuild your life on the foundation of God’s heart for you. God is not finished with you. Press on knowing that His favor is still on your life, even if there are shipwrecks and storms. He is the one who brings beauty out of ashes; He will rebuild your life on this sure foundation.

Whereas 1 and 2 Thessalonians where the first of Paul’s letters, 1 and 2 Timothy are the last of Paul’s letters. 
We first met Timothy in Acts 16. When Paul came to Derby and Lystra on his second missionary journey he met Timothy, a young man who was well spoken of by the brethren. His mother was a Jewish believer and his father was a Greek. Paul saw the spiritual zeal and the great potential of Timothy and invited him to join them on their missionary journey. This all took place just before they planted churches in Philippi, Thessalonica and in Corinth. 
Paul sent Timothy on several important missions, including delivering some of his letters to the churches. With Paul as his mentor, Timothy grew to great stature in the early church and after Paul’s death, became the Bishop of the churches in the city of Ephesus. 
Paul writes this first letter while Timothy was in Ephesus. Paul hoped to join him there, but wrote this letter to guide Timothy on how to deal with the problems there and how to lead the churches into greater spiritual maturity. 
Paul had spent two or three years in Ephesus and while he was there a major revival broke out. It was like the early days of the Calvary Chapel movement, many thousands were coming to faith in Jesus Christ and the whole city was in turmoil because the gospel was changing so many lives that people were leaving their old lifestyle and was even making a huge impact on the local economy. Many who practiced magic brought their books of incantations and threw them into a bonfire. Others were getting rid of their expensive statuettes of the goddess Diana. It was one of the greatest revivals of the early church. 
But as the church grew and the gospel made an impact on the city, spiritual warfare also grew. First there were attacks against the church and a great riot broke out in the stadium. More than once Paul found himself in serious danger. 
Then, some Jewish elements of the church started introducing strange doctrines, trying to teach that believers must be followers of the Old Testament law if they wanted to be true followers of Jesus who, of course, was also a Jew. They tried to blend in various myths and the pursuing of endless genealogies which were so important to the Jews, but Paul saw them as fruitless debates of no lasting consequence that could cause the church to get off course. 
It will take good leadership to keep the church from straying into the weeds and to keep them growing spiritually. Timothy is there right in the middle of it, given the task of being the leader that God would use to strengthen that church and to keep spiritual adversaries at bay. 
Paul writes this letter to Timothy to help him confront the issues and problems in Ephesus and to strengthen him personally as a leader. This book has great spiritual application for anyone interested in growing personally as a man or woman that God would use for His purpose.

This is now the second major section of this letter that Paul wrote to the church in Thessalonica. He’s writing during his second missionary journey, probably while he’s in Corinth. 
He had been in Thessalonica about a year before he wrote this letter. He had only been in that city for only about three weeks, but that was enough for Paul to start a major revival, establish leaders, and give them instruction, not only about the gospel of Jesus Christ, but also how to conduct their lives. He also told them to be watching for the return of Christ. 
During that year Paul had sent Timothy to receive word on their progress and to strengthen and encourage them as to their faith. Timothy returned with great news; the church was strong and healthy and the word of the Lord had sounded forth from them throughout the whole region. 
But Timothy also brought back news that they needed to understand more about the return of Christ. And what about those who had already died? Had they missed the glorious kingdom of God? And they were sorrowing and grieving over those who had died before the glorious return of Christ. 
So in response Paul writes this letter and a short time later he writes 2 Thessalonians to encourage them to excel even more in their faith, to answer their questions about the return of Christ, and how to be dressed in readiness as they discern and understand the signs of the times. 
This letter also applies to us, especially in light of the things that are happening right now in the world. It’s like spiritual tectonic plates are shifting; the world is changing before our eyes. We need to be alert, we need to be dressed in readiness ourselves.
