At this point in the book of Acts, Paul was on his third missionary journey. Traveling by ship, he was determined in his heart to go to Jerusalem. They crossed the northern Mediterranean heading east toward Israel. They landed at a port city in the area of Syria called Tyre, just north of Israel. 
For seven days they stayed in Tyre with the disciples from that city. Those disciples kept telling Paul through the Spirit not to set foot in Jerusalem. There has been much scholarly debate about whether Paul was being told here that he should not go to Jerusalem. Yet the scripture seems plain that he is being warned in the Spirit not to go. 
These are very important verses because it has to do with listening to the Lord which is something we all need to understand. But it also has to do with decision-making and the will of God, something that should be important to all of us. 
There is a story of an old Scottish woman who went from home to home across the countryside selling thread and buttons and such. When she came to an unmarked crossroad, she would toss a stick into the air and go in the direction the stick pointed when it landed. 
One day, however, she was seen tossing the stick up several times. “Why do you toss the stick more than once?” someone asked. “Because,” replied the woman, “it keeps pointing to the left, but I want to take the road on the right.” 
We all make many thousands of decisions in our lives and the course of our lives often hinges on just a few key decisions. It’s so important to understand these things.

We are in the section where Paul writes to the church at Colossae and also to us, that we should put off the things of the old life, the old man as he refers to it in many places. Put off the old habits, the old ways, the old emotions, the old way of thinking; those things only brought trouble to your life. 
Paul writes that we should put on the new man which is being renewed in the image of the One who created him. In other words, put on the heart of Christ. Put on a heart of compassion toward those around you, don’t look down on others, don’t be high and mighty; that’s just religion. 
Jesus was called the friend of sinners and had compassion on those who were broken and hurting. We need the same heart. Therefore, Paul continues, put on kindness and humility and gentleness and patience, forgiving others even as the Lord forgave you. Put this on, it’s the heart of Christ. 
It’s a continual process; you have to keep putting off the old ways, the old emotions and the old way of thinking. You brought all of those things with you when you came to Christ, those things are old and familiar and it’s easy to fall back on them. But God is making you new; you are being transformed by the renewing of your mind. You have to keep putting on new thoughts and new ways, and bring all of those old emotions and old habits under the reign of Christ. 
It’s all about what rules the heart; that’s what Paul is speaking to in the verses we’re studying today. There is a recognition that we want to put on the heart of Christ because we want to be like Him, we want to have a heart like His. We want to bring all those old things under the reign of Christ. 
But what kind of relationship do we have to Him? The old man, with the old attitude and the old way of thinking was selfish and self-centered and rebelled from the thought of being under the reign of anything other than itself. 
Paul writes many verses to compel us to understand who Christ is. “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation,” Paul wrote. And then a few verses later, “He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; so that He Himself might come to have first place and everything.” That should define our relationship. 
When you understand who He is and all that He has done for you, there’s an allegiance and a deep love for Him. The old man was hostile, alienated and rebellious, the new man has a deep love and great allegiance. 
This reminds me of one of the most famous poems in our nation’s history. Shortly after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Walt Whitman wrote a poem that captured the heart of many in this country who had great admiration and respect for their President. The nation had come through the terrible anguish of civil war and was in great need of healing, only to have their beloved President, their Captain, taken from them by an assassin’s bullet. 
The poem is called, “O Captain, My Captain.” I imagine this is how the disciples must have felt when their beloved Savior was nailed to the cross. The poem is sad, but it reflects the admiration and respect they had. And in a similar way, there must be an allegiance in our heart, and an understanding that Jesus is our Captain whom we willingly serve and deeply love.

Paul is writing this letter to the church at 
Colossae. He didn’t plant this church nor had he ever 
been in that city. The church in Colossae was planted 
by Epaphras who had heard the gospel when Paul was 
in Ephesus. He was radically saved by the gospel and 
he eagerly brought the good news to the people in the 
city of Colossae. At this point the church was thriving, 
their faith was well known and they were constantly 
bearing fruit and increasing. 
Paul is writing because Epaphras came to him 
with news; though the church was healthy and strong, 
false teachers had come into the church and there was 
danger that they could cause real damage, so Paul 
sends this letter to lay down a strong foundation of the 
truth. He intends to strengthen their faith, to refute 
false teaching, and encourage them to keep growing in 
their relationship to Christ and maturity of faith. 
Last week we read that Paul was praying for 
them. That prayer is also a call for each one of us to be 
strengthened in faith and to live out that faith in our 
lives. 
“Be filled with real knowledge of His will in all 
spiritual wisdom and spiritual understanding… so that 
you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, 
pleasing Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every 
good work and increasing in the knowledge of God,”

Paul prayed. In other words, when there is true revival 
in your heart and the Spirit is strengthening you in the 
inner man, it transforms how you live. 
In contrast, the problem with the false teaching 
that was coming into the church was that it gave no 
hope of eternal life or the forgiveness of sin, the inner 
man was not strengthened by the Spirit, and it was of 
no value against fleshly indulgence. (Verse 2:23). 
In chapter 3, Paul speaks of the practical 
transformation that comes to a believer who is 
strengthened by the Spirit in the inner man. He uses 
the picture of putting off the old and putting on the 
new. His point is that spiritual transformation is of 
great value against fleshly indulgence, and the Spirit 
encourages us to desire that victory in our lives. “Keep 
seeking the things above… Set your mind on the things 
above, not on the things that are on earth,” Paul wrote.

The church at Philippi had a lot of respect for Paul. When they heard of all the troubles he had endured and that he was held as a prisoner in Rome, they sent a messenger with words of encouragement and a financial gift. 
Paul writes this letter to thank them, but also to strengthen them in their faith and to encourage them to grow in their maturity in Christ. The church at Philippi was healthy and strong, but Paul knew they must keep growing in faith and maturity and this letter shows them what that looks like. 
The same is true for us, if things are going well and you are spiritually strong, there is still much more that God wants to do to strengthen your faith. There are many troubles coming upon this world and God knows we need to be spiritually ready and on the alert. 
And if things are not going well and you’re not spiritually strong, then God definitely wants to take hold of your life and bring you through those troubles. And if you’ll open your heart, He will heal you and strengthen you, and when you’ve come through the other side of those troubles, He wants you to keep walking with Him to keep growing in your faith. 
Maturity has everything to do with our attitude of mind. Last week Paul said that we should do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind we should regard one another is more important than ourselves. Jesus Himself is the greatest example. Even though he existed in the very nature of God, He did not regard equality thing to be grasped, or held onto, but he humbled himself and took on the likeness of men. But he didn’t just humble Himself to become a man, He humbled Himself and became a bondservant. Therefore, God highly exalted Him. 
This is one of the deepest, most important issues in the heart of God for us. How do you become great in the kingdom of God? Become like the King. This is the very definition of spiritual maturity. 
This week Paul writes that what we set our minds on has everything to do with whether we have a victorious spirit. In Chapter 3 Paul wrote, “One thing I do; forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” 
The upward call of God means everything to Paul and it defines what he sets his mind on; and what you set your mind on has everything to do with how you live your life.

We come now to Paul’s letter to the church in the city of Philippi. Paul and Silas started this church on Paul’s second missionary journey. They had been traveling through the area of Asia minor, modern day Turkey, when Paul had a vision that a man from Macedonia was calling out to him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” Paul concluded that God was directing them to Macedonia through that vision. 
The city of Philippi was named after the father of Alexander the Great, Philip, who had wanted to unify Macedonia and Greece into one great nation, but it was his son Alexander the Great who accomplished that and conquered much of the known world. 
After receiving that vision, Paul and his companions put out to sea from Troas and ran a straight course across the Mediterranean. Within a few days they reached Philippi, the leading city of that district and a Roman colony. 
On the Sabbath they went out to the riverside supposing there would be a place of prayer and began speaking to those who had assembled there. A certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple fabrics, was listening and the Lord opened her heart to receive Christ. She and her household were baptized. 
So far it’s a wonderful story, but it’s about to take a terrible turn, but as we’ll see, God can take tragedy and turn it into triumph; He brings beauty out of ashes. 
A certain slave girl, having a spirit of divination, who was bringing her masters much profit by fortune-telling, was following after Paul and his companions and she kept crying out, saying, “These men are bond servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation.” She kept doing this for many days and finally Paul became greatly annoyed. He turned and said to the demon spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out that very moment. 
When her master saw their hope of profit was gone, they took hold of Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities, the chief magistrates, and said, “These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews, and are proclaiming customs which is not lawful for us to accept or observe, being Romans.” 
A crowd rose up against them so the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to have them beaten with rods. When they had inflicted many blows they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely. 
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there came a great earthquake and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened. The jailer took out his sword to kill himself, supposing the prisoners had escaped, but Paul stopped him. Trembling with fear, the jailer fell down before Paul and Silas and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 
That very hour the jailer took them to his home and washed their wounds and he and his entire household received the word of God and were baptized; having believed. 
There’s a principle here that we should take hold of and apply to our lives as well. Many people are offended by God when they encounter troubles. 
Paul sees such troubles as opportunities for God to work in his life through those difficult circumstances. In the first part of this letter he wrote, “I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel.” What circumstances was he referring to? 
As soon as Paul arrived in Jerusalem a riot broke out so the Roman soldiers took him into protective custody. They then discovered a plot to kill him so they sent Paul to Caesarea where he sat in prison for years without facing charges. Finally, he appealed to Caesar and was sent by ship to Rome. On the way a hurricane force storm battered the ship for two full weeks until all hope was lost. They were then shipwrecked and had to swim for the island of Malta. The locals built a bonfire and when Paul threw some sticks into the fire, a viper latched onto his hand. He simply shook it off into the fire. The locals were so taken by Paul that a great revival broke out. 
Some years later while Paul was waiting in Rome as a prisoner, he wrote this letter to the church in Philippi. The church had heard of his troubles and sent a financial gift to help him; they had great respect for Paul. He writes to thank them and to strengthen their faith and draw them to maturity.

Recently we were looking at the nature of spiritual warfare in the book of Ephesians. The foundation of spiritual victory is spiritual revival personally. A sincere and authentic faith, however, begins with a heart after God and that’s what I want us to look at today. 
The church was born early in the book of Acts and by the time you get to chapter 10, the church in Jerusalem was thriving, but then a great persecution arose against the church led by none other than Saul of Tarsus. He was considered enemy number one of the church. 
And then, in an amazing turn of events, the greatest enemy of the church is literally blinded by light as he is struck off his high horse. For three days he remained physically blind, but God was opening the eyes of his heart as he received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and forgiver of his sins. 
After this, the church throughout all Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, and being built up in the faith, it continued to increase. 
But as we come to Chapter 10, God is about to do something shocking, at least it was shocking to them. Up to this point, the church was for the most part Jewish. Whenever the disciples would travel from city to city, they would give the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Jews. 
Peter was no doubt proud of his Jewish heritage and for good reason, God said Israel was His chosen people, they received the promises of God and they knew that the Messiah, who would bless the whole world, would come through them. 
But the Jews considered Gentiles unclean so they created rules and traditions that were not biblical. For instance, Jews would not eat with the Gentiles, nor would they eat food that was prepared by a Gentile. They would not invite them into their house, nor sit at a table with them. 
Now, Jesus told them to take the Gospel even to the ends of the earth, but He didn’t mean for them to take the Gospel only to the Jews who might happen to live at the ends of the earth. God’s heart is for all people. Jesus said, “God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son…” Someone famously said, “The ground is level at the foot of the cross.” 
The story of Acts 10 is about two men, Cornelius and Peter. Cornelius is an officer in the Roman army. He is a centurion in an archery unit called the “Italian Cohort”. He is an amazing man with a great heart. Cornelius sincerely seeks after God, he gives generously to the poor and he prays to God continually. He loves the light and God is about to give him more. Cornelius is hungry for the truth and he will receive more. He longs to be closer to God and he will receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. There is an interesting principle that Jesus taught in several places, “To everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance.” This was true for Cornelius. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is about to be offered to the Gentile world and it all begins with Cornelius. 
The story is also about Peter and what God must do to change his heart so that the Gospel is given to all men. Some things need to change in Peter. You might say that God needed to soften him up. As Peter was traveling through these parts he was called upon to minister to two different Gentile people. 
The first was a man named Aeneas who was paralyzed for eight years. Peter said to him, “Arise, and make your bed.” Now these are very powerful words. I’ve said those same words many times to our kids, but not with the same result.

In this last section of Ephesians Paul gives us insight into the nature of spiritual warfare and how we can have victory. This world is getting more dangerous by the day and there are spiritual forces of darkness behind what is happening in the world. 
When you look at the events unfolding on the world scene the nature of spiritual battle becomes more and more apparent. This world is going to see greater and greater struggles; we need to understand the spiritual forces behind these events. 
If we are to be victorious, we need to understand the schemes of the enemy which are against us not only on the world scene, but personally. The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. The battle is for your soul. The enemy would love nothing more than to shipwreck your faith and destroy your relationship with God. 
Paul lays the foundation for spiritual warfare in verse 10 where he said, “Be strong in the Lord and the strength of His might.” To be strong in the Lord is to have a sincere relationship where there is authentic revival in the soul. 
Over and over Paul says that you must put on the armor of God so that you will be able to resist in the evil day. Each aspect of the armor of God also reveals the schemes of the enemy. Understanding the strategy against us is the key to victory. Any strategy of warfare that doesn’t anticipate the tactics of the enemy has no hope of success. 
Paul therefore is writing so we might understand the schemes of the enemy, be prepared against the spiritual forces of wickedness and be able to stand firm, having put on the full armor of God. 
Last week we looked at the first three aspects of the armor of God. The foundation of everything is the belt of truth. The enemy is a liar and the father of lies, if he can get you to believe a lie he has won something big. If he can make you a liar, he has won something even bigger. Put on the belt of truth, God’s truth, and take your stand in the truth. 
When you put on the breastplate of righteousness, you’re protecting your heart. God gives you the righteousness of Christ as a gift so that you are made right with God the very moment you ask Jesus Christ into your heart as Lord and Savior. That matter is settled with God and it is settled forever. When you sin, when you blow it, the enemy would try to convince you that God’s done with you, that He’s angry and withholds His love, but that’s a lie. God’s love never fails and nothing can separate you from the love of God which is found in Christ Jesus our Lord. 
When you shod your feet with the gospel of peace, you counter a scheme of the enemy. If he can bring pain in relationships, if you can bring conflict in your life, if he can get you to be at war and battle with the people around you, he’s won a great victory. Jesus is the Prince of peace and he speaks peace in the midst of the storm. “Blessed are the peacemakers,” Jesus said, “for they shall be called sons of God.” 
Finally, Paul said, ‘having done everything to stand firm, stand firm therefore.’ Prepare your life for victory by taking on the full armor of God and then, having done everything to stand firm… Stand firm. The comes a time in your life when you make a decision, when you stop wavering, when you resolve this in your own heart, when you draw a line in the sand. Stand therefore and be victorious.

We need to understand the nature of spiritual warfare because, frankly, this world is getting more dangerous and there are spiritual forces of darkness behind what is happening in the world today. 
In order to be victorious in spiritual warfare, we need to be prepared and we need to understand the schemes of the enemy. Many people are not spiritually prepared and therefore are discouraged and defeated. 
When you look at the events unfolding on the world scene the nature of spiritual battle becomes more and more apparent. You look at what’s happening in the Middle East and the rise of militant Islam and its infiltration into Europe, and eventually throughout the US, you become more and more aware that this world is going to see great struggles and we need to understand the spiritual forces behind these events. 
We also need to understand the schemes of the enemy which are against us personally. Jesus said that the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. The battle is for your soul. The enemy would love nothing more than to steal your faith and destroy your relationship with God. He would love nothing more than the shipwreck your faith and to drive a wedge between you and God. The battle is for your soul. 
Paul therefore is writing so we might understand the schemes of the enemy, be prepared against the spiritual forces of wickedness and be able to stand firm, having put on the full armor of God.

The victorious Christian life is lived by the filling of the Holy Spirit. How you live has everything to do with what is filling your heart. In these last chapters Paul is contrasting the defeated, broken life of those who live by the principles of the world and the victorious Christian life of those filled with the Holy Spirit. One of the best verses to see that contrast is chapter 5, verse 18, “Do not get drunk with wine, that is dissipation, but be filled by the Holy Spirit.” 
In other words, don’t be ‘under the influence’ of the Spirit of the world, but be ‘under the influence’ of the Spirit. There are a lot of things in this world that you can take into your heart that will poison your soul. Worldly inputs are all around us. Therefore, the way you live your life has everything to do with what you put into your soul. 
Paul’s prayer in Chapter 3 is a key to the victorious life; if we would be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man and rooted and grounded in love, if we could comprehend the breadth, the length, the height and depth, and to experience the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, and if we could be filled up to all the fullness of God, then we would know that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or even think according to the power that works within us, and then we would have the treasures in our heart that would bring forth what is good in our lives. 
In these last chapters Paul wants us to see that living by the Holy Spirit will impact every area of our lives; it’s very practical. This is important because many people compartmentalize their lives. In other words, they go to church and have a relationship with God there, but don’t have a relationship with God anyplace else. They can have a relationship that is very God-honoring at church, but live a life that isn’t God honoring at all the rest of the week. 
Being filled with the Holy Spirit affects your relationship to God so that you want to honor Him in your marriage and how you raise your kids; it should impact the quality of your work as an employee and the way you respect people who work under your leadership. 
In our last study in Ephesians Paul gave us the principles of living the Spirit filled life in our marriages. The key is found in verse 21 where Paul said that we are subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. 
Paul takes those same principles and applies them to the relationships of children and parents and then goes on to apply those same principles to how we are as employees or supervisors. In other words, being filled with the Holy Spirit should impact every area of our lives.

The celebration of the resurrection is the greatest day on the calendar. It commemorates the greatest day in all of human history. But it’s not just a significant day in history, it’s personal; the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the key to God’s plan for your life today. The personal significance and meaning of the resurrection is found in one of the simplest verses in all of the Bible, “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” 
 
 God sent His Son because He loves you and He does not want you to perish, but to have everlasting life. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.… Do you believe this?” 
 
 Someone might ask, “How can you say this? Surely you know that everyone dies.” Of course I know that people die, I know that very well. Losing our daughter was the most difficult thing we’ve ever endured, but it was her body that died. Her soul lives, she was given eternal life because she asked Jesus into her heart as Lord and Savior. 
 
 Everyone will die a physical death, the statistics on that are pretty impressive; one out of every one people die physically. The older you get the more you understand that. When you’re young that’s harder to grasp. Some take the perspective of the famous song by the Rolling Stones, “Time is on My Side.” Although if you’ve seen Mick Jagger and Keith Richards lately, you would have to say that time is definitely not on their side. Let’s just say if they went shopping at Forever 21 they would be escorted out. 
 
 When Jesus died on the cross He paid the penalty for our sin; when He was raised from the grave on the third day He defeated death so that it is no longer master over us. God Sent His son so that we can have a future and a hope. 
 
 Do you have hope? What do you put your hope in? Are you hoping that one of the current candidates for president can solve all of our problems? Are you putting your hope in the amazing strength of the United States economy? Even EF Hutton wouldn’t advise that. 
 
 Sometimes devastating things happen in life that cause people to lose hope. Finances blow up and you can’t pay the bills, someone close to you dies and you can’t fill the emptiness, your marriage is in shambles and you don’t know what to do, or your health tragically turns for the worse. 
 
 The resurrection is about having life instead of death. The resurrection is about having hope from God instead of despair. He ignites our soul and fills our lives with meaning and purpose and transforms us by His presence in our lives 
 
 If Jesus remained in the grave, then He was just another spiritual teacher. If Jesus remained in the grave, then our preaching is empty, our faith is in vain and you are still in your sins. If Jesus is still dead, then what’s the point of getting together for church? What’s the point of worship? There would be no reason to celebrate, because there would be no hope. 
 
 God sent His Son to become the resurrection and the life by conquering death, but it must be personally applied. The resurrection of Jesus takes place on the first day of the week at the dawning of a new day. This becomes a picture that when you receive Jesus into your life it’s the dawning of a new day, it’s just the beginning of experiencing life and life to the full.

The celebration of the resurrection is the greatest day on the calendar. It commemorates the greatest day in all of human history. But it’s not just a significant day in history, it’s personal; the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the key to God’s plan for your life today. These chapters in the book of Ephesians give us some of the most practical principles for how to live the victorious life God intended for us. Many Christians live a defeated, mediocre spiritual life because they do not understand these principles. It has everything to do with what fills your heart. 
Jesus said, “The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good.” That’s the key; but where does that good treasure come from? There are a lot of things in this world that you can take into your heart that will poison your soul. Worldly inputs are everywhere around us. Therefore, the way you live your life has everything to do with what you put into your soul. 
A case in point; it was announced in the news this week that the Cleveland Browns have released quarterback Johnny Manziel. The Heisman Trophy winner, also known as Johnny Football, has seen his career come crashing down because he repeatedly made the decision to imbibe in all that the world has to offer. We all carry in our flesh the same desires. Jesus taught that the life is lived from that which fills the heart. 
That’s why the book of Ephesians is so powerful; as Paul prayed for us in Chapter 3: if we would be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man and rooted and grounded in love, if we could comprehend the breadth, the length, the height and depth, and to experience the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, and if we could be filled up to all the fullness of God, then we would know that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or even think according to the power that works within us, and then we would have the treasures in our heart that would bring forth what is good in our lives. 
In the last couple of chapters Paul has been contrasting the life of those who walk according to the principles of the world. They are darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God; they give themselves over to worldly things. 
Those who are strengthened with power in the inner man, experience the love of Christ and are filled up to all the fullness of God, want godly things in their lives. They desire the joy of the Spirit, peace that passes understanding, meaning and purpose, and to bring forth what is good in their lives. 
That contrast is summarized in verse 18, “Do not get drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit.” Paul then takes that spiritual truth and applies it to the specific areas of our lives where we live day in and day out. Faith that is living and active will have a direct impact on our relationships. When we are filled with the life of the Spirit, it changes how we live.
