Paul wrote this letter to the church in the city of Ephesus, one of the largest and most influential cities in the Roman empire at the time. Paul spent two or three years there, planting the church and speaking of the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the city. 
While he was there a major revival broke out, so much so that those artisans and silversmiths who sold statuettes of the goddess Diana were afraid because people were leaving idolatry and even burning their books of incantations. 
Paul wrote to them because he was a prisoner in Rome and couldn’t visit them personally, so he sent this letter to strengthen their faith and bring them into a deeper relationship to Jesus Christ. 
He wasn’t writing to correct them as he did other churches; they had a very healthy church there in Ephesus. Paul wrote because he wanted them to go much deeper in their faith. In the same way, I think we have a healthy church here. Is it perfect? No, our church is not perfect; no church is perfect and, as the old saying goes, if you ever do find a church that is perfect be sure not to join it because you’ll surely ruin it. 
Our church is healthy because the word of God is taught and people are growing in their faith and people are falling more in love with Jesus. But God is not finished with us, there is a much deeper faith that’s possible and He wants that for us. 
There is a much deeper love that transforms and He wants that for us as well. We need more victory over the flesh and that comes from deeper faith and a closer walk with Christ.

Paul is now bringing this letter to a grand conclusion. This is one of the most powerful letters that Paul wrote because it’s so practical and speaks directly to how we can have victory over the flesh. 
Paul is writing because some teachers had come from Jerusalem trying to convince these churches that if they wanted to be true followers of Jesus Christ they needed to start living under the laws that God gave to Israel and especially that they needed to get circumcised as an outward sign of their submission to the Law. 
Paul is writing to get them back on course. That’s not the gospel, that’s not the heart of God at all and if you’ll pardon the expression, Paul wants to cut them off and get the church healthy and spiritually mature by giving them some of the greatest insights we have in regards to the Holy Spirit. 
Why was the Law given it all? It was given because of transgressions, Paul wrote. God gave the Law to Israel to restrain their flesh, knowing that everyone carries about in their flesh very worldly and fleshly desires. But the Law was like a guardian, an authoritarian over them, to restrain them. 
But there’s no relationship in that. God set them free from that authoritarian, bossy guardian so they could have a relationship to God as their Abba, Father. And He has set us free, we’ve been adopted as sons and daughters and we also have God as our Abba, Father. 
But if we’ve been set free from the Law, what about the flesh? Did God is set us free so we could be free range chickens? Is God okay with having our flesh go hogwild without any constraints? Paul’s answers are powerful. 
There are several verses in Chapter 5 that lay the foundation for the verses we’re studying today. Verse 13 – You were called to freedom, brethren, only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh. Verse 16 – But I say this, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. Verse 18 – If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The key to victory, then, is the Holy Spirit. 
God set us free so that we could be adopted by God as a son or a daughter; and if you are adopted, then you have a father and if you have a father, you’re under that authority, you’re in that family, but you also have a relationship of love that you never had before. Paul wrote in Galatians 4:6, “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 
The Spirit of His Son is the Holy Spirit given to every person when they open their heart to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The Spirit ignites our heart; the Spirit transforms our lives by giving us desires that are very different than the desires of the flesh. It is the Spirit within us that hungers and thirsts for that which is good and right and honorable and godly. 
But there is a conflict because we all still have the flesh; it’s still urging us on with its own set of desires that are very much opposed to the things of the Spirit. We have a choice. It has everything to do with what we want our lives to become.

We are studying the life of Samson and as we mentioned last week, he is famous for his amazing victory and for his amazing defeat. He is famous for his amazing strength, but also for his amazing weakness. 
 Last week, as we were studying Samson's life we were learning from his failure. We saw that he had no accountability with his authority. And we also saw that though he took a lifelong vow of dedication to the Lord, he only kept the outward symbols of that vow, and that there was no inward spiritual reality. 
 The Nazirite vow is found in Numbers chapter 6. It is a special vow of dedication to the Lord. And when a man or woman takes this vow they are to separate themselves unto the Lord. During the time of their dedication, they are to abstain from wine, strong drink, and anything to do with grapes. They must keep themselves separate from anything that is dead, and they must not cut their hair. However, what we see in Samson's life was that, rather than being dedicated to the Lord, he was dedicated to himself. He blew through every stop sign imaginable. 
 The stories of Samson’s strength are famous, but the greatest lessons in his life come from his failure. In chapter 16, beginning with verse 4, Samson's recklessness catches up with him and he becomes a classic example of the consequences of sin. 
 But the story does not end there. His failure is not the final word in this life. The final word is grace; for one of the great lessons out of Samson's life is the story of restoration. 
 Lets gain spiritual understanding and insight both from learning from his failure as well as from God's grace in his life.

We come now to the famous story of Samson in Judges chapter 13. Samson is famously known for two things; first, he is known for his incredible strength and secondly, is known for his incredible weakness. Both of these become an opportunity for us to gain great insight. 
 Back in chapter 10, we discovered that Israel had once again turned their heart away from God and so God had given them over to the Philistines and the Midianites. The Midianites were oppressing Israel from the eastern side of the Jordan River and we saw how God brought deliverance through a man by the name of Jephthah. 
 So here now in chapter 13 we see how God begins to bring help for Israel from the oppression of the Philistines. Samson will be the beginning of that help, but they will not truly be free from the Philistine oppression until David, the king, comes onto the scene. 
 We have been studying how God seems to delight in using men who are broken, weak, and who have no advantage in life. These men become men of great renown and are examples of faith and victory. 
 But God also allows us to learn from other men as well. Samson is a man who is born with every advantage. His mother was barren, but the angel of the Lord appeared to her and told her that she would have a son who would begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines and that he would be a Nazirite and so she should keep the Nazirite vow while she carried him in the womb. 
 When he was born, the Lord blessed him and gave him extraordinary strength and courage. So why then, did he fail? The lessons of Samson's failure are for all of us today

We come now to Judges chapter 11 and the story of Jephthah of Gilead. Jephthah’s story is a story both of victory and tragedy. The story unfolds for us on the east side of the Jordan River. He was a member of the tribe of Manasseh. Perhaps you remember that the tribe of Manasseh was divided so that half of them lived on the eastern part of the Jordan River and the other half-tribe lived on the western side of the Jordan River. 
 The Ammonites had gathered together to attack those in the area of Gilead and so the sons of Israel in that area also gathered together, but they had no leader over them. Jephthah was then called to be the deliverer and the Lord used him to bring about a great victory for those tribes of Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan River. 
 The tragedy of his story is that early in his life he was rejected by his brothers. They all shared the same father, but Jephthah was the son of a harlot so they drove him out so that he would have no inheritance among them. 
 However, Jephthah is most famous for another tragedy in his life. After he was placed as head over the men of Gilead, he made a tragic vow unto God. That vow becomes a central theme to the text we are studying today. In fact, the victory over the sons of Ammon is almost insignificant in comparison to this vow that Jephthah made to the Lord. 
 What had happened was that Jephthah made a vow that if God would give the sons of Ammon into his hand, then it would be that whatever came out of the doors of his house to meet him when he returned in victory, it would be the Lord's, and he would offer it as a burnt offering.

As we study the book of Judges, we see a pattern emerging. The generation of Joshua died out. That generation served the Lord because they had seen all the great work which the Lord had done for Israel. But another generation arose after them; a generation that did not know the Lord, nor had they seen the work which He had done for Israel. 
 Therefore, their hearts turned away from following after God and turned toward the gods of the world. The result was predictable. They lost their strength spiritually, and so they lost their strength nationally. Then they would cry out to the Lord and the Lord would send a deliver, a judge, to save the people from their oppression. 
 The amazing thing is that this pattern would be repeated over and over for more than 250 years. The people would follow after the Lord as long as their deliverer was leading them, but when that judge would die, the people would again allow their hearts to go back to the gods of the world. 
 Last week, we were studying Judges chapter 6 where the nation of Israel was being oppressed by the Midianites. We also met a young man named Gideon who was threshing wheat in a winepress. He was then greeted by an angel of the Lord, really it was an appearance of Christ in the Old Testament, who greeted him with the amazing greeting, "The Lord is with you, oh valiant warrior." But God was addressing him as he would become, because at that moment he was certainly not a valiant warrior. 
 But then we see that transition, as the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon and he called the tribes near the region of Galilee to come up with him. Here in chapter 7, we see how the Lord uses a man of spiritual strength to bring about victory.

We now turn to the book of Judges to understand the heart of God in delivering Israel from their wayward heart. The condition of Israel at that time is summarized best in chapter 2. There we read that the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, but then it says, “There arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor yet the work which he had done for Israel.” 
 That was the problem, the next generations hadn’t experienced the miracles of God as the generations before them had and so they did not know the Lord. That is the key phrase. They didn’t know the Lord and so they didn’t follow after Him with all their heart, soul, mind and strength as Joshua’s generation had heard so many times that they must do. Joshua admonished the people that they should cling to the Lord and to take diligent heed to love the Lord. 
 So the book of Judges is really about the lessons of unfaithfulness. They were unfaithful and then, sure enough, just as God had forewarned them, life became extremely difficult. It would finally get so bad that they would cry out to the Lord. 
What is amazing is that each time they cried out to the Lord, He would answer by sending them a deliverer, a judge, to rescue them from their oppression. They would then follow the Lord while that deliverer was alive, but then they would fall back to the ways of the world, of the gods of the nations that remained among them. We see here another cause of their failure, they didn’t fully follow the Lord in removing the pockets of worldliness that remained among them and so they became a snare to them and thorns to their sides. It was these foreign gods would seem to trip them up over and over. 
So here is the story of a time of oppression and in their distress they called out to God and God sent a deliverer, but a more unlikely deliverer would be hard to find.

We come now to the last chapter of the book of Joshua. In this chapter contains one of the most famous verses of the entire Bible, because it contains a challenge to the leaders of Israel that resonates throughout the centuries and challenges us today. 
 Joshua is old and advanced in years so he calls for all Israel, for their elders and their heads and their judges and officers and he gives them his final message. It is a word from God, and it is a word that called them to make a decision. Joshua has been leading them and they have seen great victories as the hand of the Lord has done mighty things for them. 
 Joshua has reminded them that it was the Lord who drove out great and strong nations from before them. It was because of the Lord that one of their men could put 1000 to flight. He reminded them that not one word of all the good words which God spoke concerning them has failed. 
 In the early part of chapter 24 he goes back over their long history beginning even with Abraham and reminded them of all that God had done for them that brought them to this point. It was God who took them from nothing and made them something. And here they were standing on the land which God had promised to them, but there was more work to be done. There were still pockets of resistance, pockets of the world which remained amongst the tribes of Israel. There was still much danger and so Joshua wanted to give them the keys to press on to obtain all that God promised them. 
 There is great application to us because the same challenge that Joshua brought to the leaders of Israel, God brings to us today.
