As we come to chapter 23 we find Joshua old and advanced in years. He died at the age of 110, so at this point he would be nearly that old. Before he died, however, he gathered all Israel together, that is to say he called for the elders, the leaders, their judges, and their officers in order to give his final message to the nation. 
 Israel had seen the mighty hand of God fulfilling the promises that God had given to them and to their fathers. This was not the unfaithful generation that had died in the wilderness; this was the generation of those who were victorious because they faithfully trusted that God would do what he said. 
 So Joshua does not bring them together in order to correct them or to rebuke them, he wants to make sure that they never fail to stand on the promises of God; that they would never fall back, that they would always remain a faithful people so that they would always have the blessings they had already obtained, but not only that, there was more to do. They had inherited the land which God gave to them, but it remained for each individual tribe to fully process what God had given them. There were still pockets of enemy resistance and Joshua calls them to completely possess the land of promise. 
 We see in scripture that these things were written for our instruction; these things were written for our example so that we should learn from them. When Israel wandered in the desert for 40 years it was a picture of an immaturity of faith. They did not trust God, therefore they did not obtain the promises he desired for them. That entire generation died in the wilderness and a new generation rose up that did trust God and therefore they obtained the promises. 
 God calls us as well to be victorious; to have a maturity of faith that believes God's Word so that we can also obtain the promises God intends for us. 
 But having obtained those promises, we must continue to walk in faithfulness. Are there pockets of resistance that remain in our lives as well? And that is the main point of Joshua's message to the leaders of Israel; faith is a condition of being. In other words, we are to continue to live faithfully. We are to continue to stand on the promises which God gave us. 
 This message that Joshua gives to the leaders of Israel is a very appropriate message for us as well. These are important lessons in maintaining a steadfast life of faithfully trusting God.

As we come to chapter 14 we find that Israel has not only entered into the Promised Land, but they have also conquered a great portion of the southern territory as well as the northern territory. They have come to the point where they are ready to divide the land according to the tribes of Israel. 
 
 They were to divide the territory by lot, as God had instructed them. But this is when the story gets very interesting, because the sons of Judah came to Joshua and Caleb said to him, "You remember the word which the Lord spoke to Moses concerning you and me at Kadesh Barnea. He swore to us that the land on which our foot has trodden shall be our inheritance. Now then, give me the land which was promised." 
 
 Caleb is an amazing character in the Bible and there is a lot to learn from his life. At this point he is 85 years old and he says that he has the same strength he had when he was 40 years old! What he wants is to be given the most difficult land there in Israel. It was the most difficult because it was hill country; it was difficult terrain. But its greatest challenge was that the Anakim were there. The sons of Anak were large people and it was they who had put fear into the hearts of Israel at Kadesh Barnea 45 years earlier. Caleb had been waiting 45 years for an opportunity to face the sons of Anak and take the hill country that God had promised him. 
 
 Israel was given the land of Canaan as an inheritance. It was the land which God had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It's a picture for us of the believer’s walk of victorious faith. But it takes courage to take hold of the promises of God and Caleb becomes a tremendous example for us in strength of faith, in wholehearted commitment, and in trusting God's Word.

Israel is now across the Jordan River in the land that God had promised them. And though this is the land of promise, there are still many obstacles and battles before them. Their first battle was at Jericho which was a city fortified with two sets of walls 35 to 40 feet high. They faced an impossible obstacle, but God gave them the victory. 
 
 And then we come to chapter 7. They came from an amazing victory to a devastating defeat. This of course is a tragic story. Here God had brought them into a land of promise, but they must be victorious in order to have those promises. 
 
 There are a lot of lessons in this story for us. We understand that Israel entering into the land of promise is a picture of the believer who lives by faith and who lives victoriously. So here we have a picture of a setback; a defeat in the life of a believer. So it's very important that we learn these lessons and avoid defeat. But if we have experienced a defeat along the way, we must be sure to learn every possible lesson so that we can continue to grow in victory. 
 
 After Jericho they looked west and they could see that their next major obstacle would be Bethel as they headed up the West Bank of the Jordan River. But along the way was a small village called Ai. Joshua sent some men to Ai spy out the land. They came back with a report that Ai would be a minor obstacle. In fact, they would only need to send 2-3,000 men to take care of this small problem. But this small village turned out to be a great problem, but it also became for them a great lesson. Here are the reasons for their defeat.

At this point in our study in the book of Joshua, Israel has crossed over the Jordan River and are about to face their first battle, the city of Jericho. It’s important to understand the spiritual application of Israel’s experiences to our own lives today. 
 The Apostle Paul wrote that these things happened to Israel for our example; that we should learn from their lack of faith and their disobedience, so that we live victoriously. 
 God does want us to live victoriously and so he gave us the power of His Word and the presence of his Holy Spirit. 
 Israel being saved out of Egypt is a picture of our own salvation from the world’s oppression and slavery. When Israel crossed the Red Sea this was a picture of our own baptism into Jesus Christ. When Israel wandered in the desert, it was a picture of a believer who is immature, trying to please God in the flesh. The land of Palestine is a picture of the believer who is walking in faith and being led by the Holy Spirit. 
 At this point, Israel has crossed the Jordan River. The first thing they did was to circumcised the men and celebrate the Passover. Both of these have spiritual significance for the Christian who is growing in faith. 
 They are in the land that God promised them, but they still have a long way to go. Indeed, there are many battles in the process of becoming a victorious and mature believer. 
 They begin the process of conquering their land by facing a city with impossible walls. The walls of Jericho were 35 to 40 feet high with not one, but two walls protecting the city. It was virtually impregnable. In other words, the walls of Jericho were an impossible obstacle. 
 In the same way, we’re going to face many obstacles, even what we may think are impossible walls and we need to understand the lessons for spiritual victory for our own lives today.

We have now come to the book of Joshua. Moses has died, but before his death he commissioned Joshua to lead the people of Israel into the land of God’s promises. This book then, is an account of the nation of Israel entering in and conquering the land of Canaan. 
 There have been some who have written that Israel entering into the land is a picture of our entry into heaven. I do not see that at all. When God brought Israel out of the land of Egypt that is a picture of when God brought us out of the world. Israel’s journey through the wilderness is a picture of our own in maturity in Christ. Therefore, Israel’s crossing of the Jordan River is a picture of the believer who enters into the fullness of God’s promises; the believer who walks in the maturity of his faith. 
 There are many promises that we receive simply by being in Christ. But there are other promises we receive because we walk in the maturity of faith. In other words, in order to receive all that God promises us, we also must move forward. 
 Things are about to change for Israel. Their leader, and in fact a very good leader, who has led them for 40 years is gone. They no longer have the pillar of fire by night or the cloud by day to direct their steps. 
 So God took Joshua aside and spoke these words of encouragement and insight to him. And the beautiful thing here is that we also get to drink from the same well. These words also become a great encouragement to us because God wants us also to move forward and receive the promises he has for us.

Paul is concerned for these churches in the area of Galatia because some teachers have come from Jerusalem telling them that if they want to be true followers of Jesus they need to take on the aspects of Judaism. They need to become circumcised, they need to observe all the Jewish feasts and they need to come under the Law. 
Paul was not just upset with these teachers; he was amazed because the church started going along with the program. He’s writing to get them back on course, saying that these men are distorting the gospel of Christ and that if anyone preaches a different gospel, let him be accursed. Paul is hot! 
He then goes into great depth explaining the difference between the Old Testament Law and the gospel of Jesus Christ. 
No one is justified by the works of the Law, Paul wrote, we are justified by faith in Christ. In other words, a sinner is not made right with God because he’s done some righteous things. Frankly, God is not impressed. “The righteousness of man is like filthy rags before God,” the prophet Isaiah wrote. 
The notion that someone can be made right with God by doing some righteous things has several problems. First, God doesn’t just keep track of the few good things a person does; He keeps track of everything. Can you imagine someone following you around with a clipboard and writing down everything you’ve ever done or said or thought? And then can you imagine that your relationship to God is based upon what’s written on the clipboard? That’s not such an encouraging thought. 
The problem is that God is holy and that clipboard has recorded some things that are frankly quite embarrassing. A lot of people actually believe that their standing before God is based on what’s written on that clipboard. They believe all their deeds are placed on a scale; the bad things on one side, the good things on the other side. “Let’s see, I’ve told three lies and four truths, that puts me on the plus side. I stole something two times, but I didn’t steal something seven times; man, I’m really doing well.” No, God doesn’t compare the good to the bad, he compares all of it, the entire clipboard, to His own holiness. 
If you have a perfectly white dress how many stains would it take before we say that the dress is stained? Only one. Once the dress is stained, how do you remove it?

Paul writes this letter to the churches of Galatia. This was an area in modern-day Turkey, known as Asia Minor. Paul planted these churches as he did throughout his journeys. Notice that he writes ‘to the churches’ – plural – of Galatia. He expected them to have this letter read at all the churches there. 
He writes because he is concerned about them. People have come from Jerusalem teaching that if they wanted to be authentic followers of Christ they had to take on aspects of Judaism. True followers of Christ should get circumcised, they said, they needed to keep all Jewish holy days, and all Jewish laws, etc. “After all,” they would say, “Jesus was a Jew, therefore, His followers should also become Jewish.” 
Verse 6 – “I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ for a different gospel. Some are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.” 
How does this apply to us today? After all, our church isn’t bothered by anyone from Jerusalem trying to tell people that they have to get circumcised if they want to be saved. We wouldn’t tolerate that for one moment. So how does this apply? 
Here’s how; he confronts this false teaching by giving one of the best descriptions of the gospel found in the Bible. Not only that, but by answering these false teachers, Paul gives practical answers to some very modern dilemmas. 
How does a sinner become justified before God? How do we live before God in a world which is very much opposed to God? It’s interesting, a recent survey showed that 93% of Americans believe in God. Why is it then that the notion of living in a godly way is so mocked and ridiculed today? 
How does a person live by their faith? If you believe in God and have faith to take hold of His promises, what bearing does that have on how you live every day? 
One of the great themes that comes out of these verses is how to live by faith. No man is justified before God by the works of the Law, Paul wrote, rather, we are justified by faith in Christ. In other words, no man is able to pull himself up by his own righteous bootstraps. We are justified before God by receiving righteousness as a gift and we receive that by faith. 
We were just discussing on Wednesday why the works of the Law cannot make a person justified. If you sin on a point of the Law, what do you do to erase it? If you lie can you tell more truth? If you steal, does not stealing make up for it? 
This has everything to do with our relationship to God and how to live out that relationship every day by faith.

The beginning of a new year is an opportunity to start over, to begin again; to renew commitments. We make New Year’s resolutions because the year is new and it reminds us of the importance of new beginnings. 
Probably one of the best stories of starting over is Jesus restoring Simon Peter after he failed miserably. We can certainly relate to failure, but how do you recover from it? Once a person has failed the enemy has a very powerful weapon; that weapon is shame. But the beauty and the power of the story is that God takes away the shame and restores Peter in His great love and renews the purpose and calling on his life. 
The story begins shortly after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The resurrection changes everything. It changes the meaning of the cross. Before the resurrection it represented death and struck fear in the hearts of any who looked upon a cross. But after the resurrection it became a symbol of hope and a reminder of how much God loves us. It has become a thing of beauty. That’s why we place crosses on graves. 
 The resurrection changed death itself. Before, the grave was the final chapter, the end of all hope, the final curtain. But because of the resurrection, death no longer is master over us, it has been conquered, it has been defeated. Our last breath is not the end; that is when life truly begins. 
 The resurrection gave us an eternal perspective. Before, all we could hope for was here on earth; our purpose, the meaning of life, it was all centered here, on the material, on things which are earthly. Now, because of the resurrection, all those things seem so unimportant when compared to the eternal weight of glory. We have been set free. 
 I read the story of a man who was radically changed because he understood how much God loved him when the Lamb of God died on the cross. When he was a young boy a neighbor gave him a baby lamb. It became his constant companion and best friend. One day he came home to find his father in a drunken rage, fixing a flat tire. Out of curiosity, the boy’s pet lamb had wandered over, but the father, in a drunken rage, killed the lamb with a tire iron. The boy was never the same; hatred filling his heart. He hated everyone and everything, including himself. Many years later, he found himself sitting in church. The pastor was speaking about the Lamb of God that willingly died on the cross. 
 For the first time in his life he understood love. The Lamb of God had died so he could receive God’s love; the Father’s love he had never known. It changed him; he could feel the hatred leaving his heart as he gave his heart to this love. 
 When you look at this chapter in the book of John, it’s about starting over; it’s about the new life that God has in store for us. It’s about faith, hope, and love.

In this last section of Paul’s letter to the church at Corinth, he’s addressing a problem of great concern to him personally. Paul planted that church and many of the churches in the areas of Asia minor, Greece, Achaia, and Macedonia, but some Jews were going around to the churches teaching the people that if they wanted a right relationship to God, they needed to follow all the Jewish laws, become circumcised, and take on every other aspect of Judaism. 
Apparently, they came in bold and brash, arrogantly bragging about their credentials as Jews, but at the same time throwing Paul under the bus by saying that Paul was of the flesh because his gospel of grace only encouraged people into fleshly living. They couldn’t have been more wrong and Paul is incensed that they would come into the churches he planted and disrupt their spiritual growth by trying to drag them back into legalism. 
Not only that, they were taking advantage of the churches by taking up offerings for themselves. That was too much; Paul takes them on with some very strong words. This is actually a problem in many parts of the world today. The modern pastors in Nigeria and many countries in Africa, including the DRC are making big business out of using the same approach; flamboyant and braggadocious, they take advantage of the church taking millions for themselves. 
This is a spiritual battle, Paul wrote, but the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, they are divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God. 
He also wrote, “But he who boasts, let him boast in the Lord. For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends.” And then later in chapter 11, “Such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore, it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.” 
Then, in an interesting turn, Paul does some boasting himself. But what does he boast about? He boasts about his weaknesses, the distresses, the persecutions, and the difficulties he suffered for the sake of Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:22-30 
But this is where we see Paul’s faith and gain a great insight into what it means to see God’s strength, God’s power, and God’s provision in our lives.

As we come to chapter 10, Paul turns his attention to a problem of great concern to him. There was a group of Jewish Christians coming behind Paul, speaking to the churches, saying that the gospel of grace that Paul was teaching was not correct. They were teaching that if a person truly followed Christ they would take on the obligations of Judaism. By that they meant the keeping of Jewish laws as well as the circumcision of the flesh and all that went along with being a Jew. That isn’t the gospel of grace. 
That had actually been a problem from the earliest days of the birth of the church and interestingly, there is still a small group of people today that teach the same thing. 
Paul takes this on in an even stronger way in the letter to the church at Galatia, the next book we’ll be studying. “Live by the law, and you will be judged by the law,” Paul writes to them. No, we’ve been set free in Christ, all the requirements of the law have been fulfilled in Christ so that all the ordinances that were against us were nailed to the cross. 
There is a spiritual battle for the hearts of the believers in this church and Paul is very concerned for them. This church means a lot to Paul. God used him to plant this church and it’s a great concern to him personally that these Judaizers were disturbing the church that he loves. 
I can imagine this myself. I’ve put my heart and soul into this church for the last almost 26 years and if something happened, let’s say I hurt my back and couldn’t be here, and then someone came in and started teaching that everyone had to get circumcised before they could be saved, you can believe I would get a little upset myself. I would get back as soon as I could and set things right. 
So Paul is preparing to visit them again and get the church healthy again. There was a spiritual battle for the hearts of the people in that church. It’s the nature of that spiritual battle that we want to look at today in these verses.

In the last several chapters Paul has given us some of the greatest promises a believer can receive. If any man is in Christ he is a new creation, old things pass away, behold; God is making all things new, Paul wrote in Chapter 5. 
 
That’s a foundational promise. In other words, that’s a promise you can build on. It’s very much like when Jesus said that whoever hears and takes hold of His word and builds his life on those words is like a wise man who builds his house on a strong foundation. 
 
That’s the theme in Chapter 7; he starts out by saying, “Therefore, having these promises, beloved…” Let’s receive these promises and understand that He wants to build spiritual maturity in our lives. He’s building spiritual maturity on the foundation of all that he has promised us. 
 
In Chapter 6 Paul quoted from Isaiah, “Come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord. God was calling Israel to leave Babylon behind, go to Jerusalem and build the temple. The temple represented the fact that God was with them; that He would be among them and pour His blessing and favor out on them. 
 
In a similar way, God is calling us to leave worldly things behind because we are the temple of the living God. He is Immanuel, God with us. Our relationship to God has been completely redefined. We were once estranged from God, but we who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. He is now with us and we get to live out the rest of our days walking with Him. He will be a father to us, Paul wrote, and we will be sons and daughters to Him. 
 
He is a good, good father and He is completely committed to our spiritual maturity. Any good father wants his children to mature. Jesus said, “If you know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give what is good to those who ask Him!” 
 
Do you know the greatest thing you can give to your children? It isn’t money, or clothes, or a new cell phone, or anything money can buy. The greatest thing you can give your children is to give them godly character; because you’re equipping that child for life. 
 
That’s what God is giving to us; He’s equipping us for life by building godly character in us, He’s filling us with the Holy Spirit of life. We now have a relationship where we’re, “Working together with Him.” -- 2 Corinthians 6:1. What a great way to live your life; working together with Him. This is key because too many people are self-reliant. We all have a tendency to think that we can do things on our own. 
 
That reminds me of the story of the guy who was going to an important meeting and couldn’t find a parking place. He kept searching and searching and finally, panicking, he looked up and said… 
 
Chapter 7 is about building your life on these promises, knowing that He is making all things new and giving you a great gift – godly character. But here’s something important to understand, He builds godly character even through the troubles and sorrows of our lives. In fact, it’s often the times of deepest trouble and greatest sorrow that we grow the most. 
 
We’re working together with Him; we’re walking together with Him and even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we fear no evil, for He is with us and His rod and His staff comfort us.

In the last several chapters Paul has given us some of the greatest promises a believer can receive. If any man is in Christ he is a new creation, old things pass away, behold; God is making all things new, Paul wrote in Chapter 5.

That’s a foundational promise. In other words, that’s a promise you can build on. It’s very much like when Jesus said that whoever hears and takes hold of His word and builds his life on those words is like a wise man who builds his house on a strong foundation.
