When you study through the life of David you see how often God delivered him from great troubles; and David certainly had many troubles in his life. He spent many years on the run from Saul’s wrath and jealousy. He faced many enemies from the countries surrounding Israel. His own son, Absalom, tried to overthrow him and he had to flee Jerusalem to save his life. He then had to put down a squabble between the tribes of Israel for who would have the honor of escorting David back to Jerusalem. He was barely reestablished on the throne when he had to face another attempt to overthrow the kingdom. 
 
Certainly David faced many troubles and many of us face troubles as well. One thing is most certain in this life, we must continue steadfast in our faith, because the challenges and difficulties are part of living on this earth. 
 
What we need then, is to make some decisions in regards to how we will live our lives. From early in David’s life it’s clear that David decided that he would trust God to be his help and he stood by that decision all of his life; even into his old age. 
 
It’s also important for us to see that David would trust God to be his help whether his troubles were caused by others or by his own foolish decisions. 
 
In 2 Samuel 22, David wrote the words of a song to the Lord after he had been delivered by the Lord yet again. David is called a man after God’s own heart and the words of his songs, his psalms, reveal that heart to us. And if we will take these words into our hearts, we would be strengthened as well.

Late in David's life he decided that he wanted to number the people of Israel. In other words, he wanted a census to be taken. No specific reason was given for David's desire to count the people, but as we study through this chapter, the reasons become clear. 
 
There is some question as to who incited David to do this. From reading both this account and a parallel account found in first Chronicles, we understand that the anger of the Lord burned against Israel and that Satan incited, or tempted David to take this census. 
 
We also know that Joab, the commander of the army who was with him, tried to change David's mind with very strong words. Apparently, the other commanders of the army also tried to convince David not to do this thing. But David went against all counsel and insisted on getting his way. He wanted the census taken and he would not change his mind. 
 
By the time David had become an older man, Israel had become a strong and successful nation. In fact, other nations around Israel were paying tribute to David in recognition of his superiority over them. No foreign armies had been able to defeat Israel with David as their king. 
 
But just how successful had David become? Just how powerful were David's forces? There would be only one way to know; take a census and find out. David here wasn't looking to declare how great God was, this one was all about David. 
 
Had David lost some of his faith in his older years? Was he beginning to rely on himself rather than God? Before David would die, they would be one final revival in David’s heart.

As we near the end of our study of the life of David, we come to 2 Samuel 23 where there is a list of the names of the mighty men whom David had. 
 
First, I think it's important to note that David himself should be considered a mighty man. That's what drew these men to him. In fact, late in David's life when he was becoming old, the Philistines had attacked Israel yet again and David himself went out to battle. In the battle that day was one of the sons of Goliath whom David had slain when he was a youth. 
 
This son of Goliath, named Ishbi-benob, had singled David out. He was wearing a new sword and was intent on using it to kill David. So there was David in his old age taking on one of the giant sons of Goliath in single-handed combat. David became weary, however, so Abishai came over and helped him. After that, they didn't let David go into battle anymore. But it’s amazing that David, as the king of Israel was willing not just to go out with his men, but to take on the son of Goliath single-handedly! 
 
So David himself was a mighty man and here is listed out for us the names of the mighty men who had been with David all his years. 
 
God is still looking for mighty men and women who want to make a difference in their generation and who desire to do great things through the strength that God provides.

Last week as we were studying in chapter 14, we began to see the unfolding of consequences for the sin that David allowed in his life. The adultery with Bathsheba, causing her husband to die at the hands of the Ammonites, and then taking Bathsheba as his wife, were all part of the greatest failure of David's life. 
 
The consequences also began to be lived out in his family. His son, Amnon, had raped his half-sister, Tamar, but David was paralyzed by his own sin and took no action. Finally, Tamar's brother, Absalom, took matters into his own hands and arranged for Amnon's death. Absalom then fled the country and was banished for three years while again David took no action. 
 
Finally, David extended mercy to Absalom and had him brought back to Jerusalem, but would not see his face. For two more years bitterness built up in Absalom’s heart. Finally, Absalom pleaded to see David's face and when David agreed to see him, David kissed Absalom's face. 
 
But it was too little, too late. Absalom decided to build a conspiracy against David. He positioned himself at the gate of the city, and began to win the favor of the people of Israel. When the time was ripe, he set up his headquarters in Hebron and prepared to launch a coup. 
 
When David got word of just how deep this conspiracy was, he decided to leave Jerusalem to spare it from the calamity of war. That is where we pick it up in chapter 15. 
 
David was facing the greatest trouble of his life, but here is where we can learn great lessons for ourselves. We may find ourselves going through a time of great trouble, and it may even be the consequences of our own doing, but these are great lessons that we must all receive for ourselves.

As I mentioned last week, God does not gloss over the failures of the people we study in God's Word. David is certainly no exception. What God gives us is a portrait of David, "warts and all." 
 
That phrase, "warts and all," it's actually attributed to Oliver Cromwell who was Lord Protector of England in the 1600s and had hired the kings artist, Lely, to paint a portrait of him. It was common practice at the time for an artist to flatter the one being painted. Royalty, in particular, expected portraits to show them in the best possible light, even to the point of being outright fanciful if necessary; kind of like a modern day, “Glamour shots.” 
 
But when Cromwell sat down to be painted he said famously, "Mr. Lely, I desire you would use all your skill to paint my picture truly like me, and not flatter me at all; but remark all these roughnesses, pimples, warts and everything as you see me, otherwise I will never pay a farthing for it." 
 
As the king of Israel, David's flaws and failures would become inextricably linked to his reign as king. David had committed adultery with Bathsheba, arranged for her husband to be killed in battle, and then took her as his own life. 
 
Yes, God would forgive him, but there would still be consequences, and that itself is a lesson for all of us. David would see the consequences in his own life and in the lives of his children. 
 
The background of the story is that one of David's sons, Amnon, had desire sexually for his half-sister Tamar. He then pretended to be sick as a ruse to get her to come to him. He then forced himself on her against her strong protest. Afterward, he despised her and sent her away in disgrace. When Absalom her brother found out what had happened, he brought Tamar into his own care and waited for David to take action. 
 
After two full years, Absalom took matters into his own hands and had Amnon killed. Afterwards, he fled to Geshur, the home of his mother’s family. He was banished there for three years.

As we continue our study of the life of David we come to the story of David's greatest sin. This begins a serious downward spiral for David. 
 
One of the things that we can conclude from studying the lives of different biblical characters is that God does not gloss over their lives. We are given the reality of who men are; both of their faith and of their failures. 
 
I'm convinced that the reason God gives us the reality of people's lives is so we would learn great lessons for our own lives today. 
 
I'm sure there are many people who, when they come into church and hear that we are speaking about David and Bathsheba, would say in their hearts, "Not today, pastor, I brought friends with me to church today and I was hoping to hear something edifying; something to build up our faith." 
 
But this is actually a very important lesson for us to study because in these verses God is giving as an opportunity to learn from David's errors. God gives us this story to warn us, He doesn't want us to be hurt; He doesn't want us to suffer loss. He wants us to be built up. 
 
He doesn't want us to shipwreck our lives, so he gives us clear understanding of how to stay away from the rocks that would destroy our lives.

As we come to second Samuel chapter 7, we find that David has been anointed king over all of Israel. At first, he was anointed only over the tribe of Judah, but after a short civil war he is now king over all the tribes of Israel. 
 
The Lord has given him rest on every side, it tells us in verse one. He has defeated the Philistines who had troubled Israel for many years and now the nation is at rest. 
 
At this point, David has even been given a beautiful palace made of cedar. The king of Tyre sent craftsmen and a great supply of cedar from the famous trees of Lebanon as a gift from one king to another. 
 
That is the background that brings us to the events of chapter 7. David was sitting in his beautiful cedar palace and it occurred to him one day that this wasn't right. He said to the prophet Nathan, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within tent curtains." 
 
In other words, David wants to build a house for God. This chapter has great spiritual significance because it becomes the background for the prophetic events that unfold in the rest of the Scriptures. In fact, the ministry of Jesus Christ can be traced directly back to the unfolding events of 2 Samuel 7. 
 
There is also a lot of personal application for each of us because David's heart becomes a great example to us, and God's response to David is filled with promises that affect us today.

When we come to second Samuel chapter 6, David has been made king over all the tribes of Israel, not just over the tribe of Judah. When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, no doubt they felt betrayed since David had once lived among them. They formed a great army in order to defeat David, but the Lord was with him and he defeated the Philistines in two great battles. 
 
All of that leads us to the events of chapter 6. With David firmly in place as the king of Israel, and with peace over the Philistines, David decides that it is time to bring the ark of God into Jerusalem, the new capital of Israel. 
 
It’s important also to understand what has been happening in David’s life spiritually. Before David became king, he was on the run from Saul who felt threatened by him and he became weary and tired of always having to look over his shoulder. In his discouragement, he stepped out of the will of God, basically he was backsliding, for 16 months. Then, when David’s life got to its darkest, broken state, he turned to God and began to rebuild his life. 
 
When we come to chapter 6, David is growing spiritually much stronger. His heart sincerely wants to honor God so he decided that it was time to bring the ark of God into Jerusalem. In other words, David knew that the ark of God represented the glory of God’s presence and David wanted it in Jerusalem where all of Israel could also find revival in their lives as well. 
 
But here is where David learned some great insights into how to bring the fullness of God’s glory into his life and into Israel.
