At this point in history, the northern kingdom of Israel had been destroyed by Assyria. They had been taken captive and removed to other places. Judah in the south survived Assyria’s attack because of the miraculous intervention of God to save them through King Hezekiah. 
 
After Hezekiah died Manasseh ruled as king of Judah and he was without question the worst king that Judah had in their entire history. Not only did he rebuild the altars for Baal and Astoreth as Ahab king of Israel had done, he built altars to foreign gods even in the house of the Lord! Can you imagine? In the very temple of the living God, Manasseh built altars to the gods of permissiveness. 
 
He practiced witchcraft and used divination and dealt with mediums and spiritists and even made his son pass through the fire of Molech. God responded through the prophets and said that Jerusalem would be destroyed and even said, "I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down." 
 
After Manasseh, his son Amon reigned as king in Jerusalem and he was also an evil king. However, he only reigned two years because his own servants conspired against him and killed him. 
 
That brings us to Josiah. He was only eight years old when he became king, but he did right in the sight of the Lord and walked in the ways of his father David. But Josiah not only walked before the Lord himself, he decided to bring great spiritual reform to the kingdom of Judah. 
 
And with that our lesson begins. The reforms that Josiah brought to Judah challenge us to bring reform in our lives as well. But there is a difference between reform and revival. 
 
Reform is changing the way a person lives, but revival is something different, something beyond reform, something greater, and something that God desires to see in each one of us as well. Revival is when a person turns to the Lord with all their heart.

Our attention is turned to the southern kingdom of Israel called Judah. Hezekiah was reigning as king in those days and as we read earlier, Hezekiah was a good king. He trusted in the Lord and brought about a great revival in Israel. He brought reforms that even Solomon had not done. 
 
The northern kingdom of Israel had already been destroyed by Assyria at this point. Israel in the north had been carried away and transported to some far-off place and some other people were brought in to replace them. They inter-married with the few Hebrews who remained and later became known as the Samaritans. 
 
As we studied last week, Assyria almost destroyed Judah in the south as well. Hezekiah, to prepare for the siege, became famous for engineering a tunnel that diverted the brook Gihon to the Pool of Siloam inside Jerusalem. It was 1,777 feet long and 30 feet underground through solid bedrock. 
 
First, Assyria laid siege to Jerusalem and then later Hezekiah received a letter from the king of Assyria warning him not to trust in the God of Israel. But Hezekiah brought that letter to the house of the Lord and laid it out before Him and prayed that God would save them. 
 
God responded by saying, “Because you have prayed to Me about the king of Assyria, I have heard you.” That night an angel of the Lord came through the camp of Assyria and 185,000 soldiers of Assyria died. 
 
Sometime shortly afterwards, Hezekiah became mortally sick. We don't know the exact nature of his illness, but we do know that there was some kind of boil associated with it. Perhaps it was some form of cancer, but we really don't know for certain. Ben Gurion University put out a study of the chemical compounds in figs as a treatment for cutaneous anthrax based on this account in 2 Kings. 
 
The prophet Isaiah came to Hezekiah with a message from the Lord and here the lessons for us begin as well. As we study through this part of Hezekiah's life, there are many spiritual lessons and insights for each one of us.

Our story unfolds in the kingdom of Judah. The background was that Assyria had become a world dominating power. With terrible cruelty and coldness of heart, they were destroying nation after nation. 
 
The northern kingdom of Israel had also been destroyed by Assyria at this point. They had done to Israel what they had also done to many other nations, they carried them away to live in some far-off place, lose their national identity, and simply disappear into the populations of the world. They become what many call the ten lost tribes of Israel. But God preserved a remnant for Himself of these tribes which we will see as we continue our study through the bible. 
 
Assyria also brought people from some other conquered nations to live in Samaria, another name for northern Israel. Those people became known as the Samaritans. They were there during the time of Jesus’ ministry. In fact, it was a Samaritan woman whom he led to the Lord in John chapter 4. When the Pharisees wanted to insult Jesus they called him a Samaritan. 
After Assyria took captive the northern kingdom of Israel, they turned their sights to Judah where Hezekiah was King. They intended to destroy Judah as well. 
 
As we have been studying through these chapters, we've seen the significance of both prophets and kings in regard to the spiritual and national strength of Israel. Each of them had a separate, yet significant role. What's interesting is that Jesus is both King and prophet, He will completely fulfill the place of prophet and king when He comes again in the near future. 
 
So Sennacherib sent his officers to Jerusalem in an attempt to destroy the nation of Judah in a war of words. 
 
This encounter between Hezekiah and Sennacherib, king of Assyria, became an absolutely monumental point in the history of the nation. If they were taken away to another place and a foreign people were given this land, then all of God's promises would come to nothing. 
 
A great spiritual battle was unfolding in this story and there are many spiritual insights and applications for our own lives that we should seek to apply in how we live before God and how we respond when troubles come our way.

For the last several weeks we have been focusing our study on events that were taking place in the northern kingdom of Israel. But now, as we turn to 2 Kings 18, we turn our attention to the southern kingdom called Judah. 
 
In verse 1 we read that Hezekiah had become king of Judah at this time. He was only 25 years old when he became king. We also know something about his father and mother which will become important to our study. 
 
We are encouraged immediately because we read that Hezekiah did right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done. Not only that, but Hezekiah received the greatest of all commendations from the Lord because in verse five we read that there was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among those who were before him. 
 
Hezekiah, therefore, was an exceptionally significant king in the history of Judah and we will gain much from our study of his life. 
 
There is a Hebrew word that also becomes an important part of this story. It's the word, Nahushtan. This is one of those words you could use to make a beautiful plaque and hang it on your living room wall and then when all your friends and family come over they'll ask you what it means. 
 
As we study through God's Word, let's also prepare our hearts to receive wisdom and spiritual insight as we look to the Holy Spirit to apply this word to our lives today.

The events of our study today take place in the northern kingdom of Israel. Elisha was the prophet and as we have been studying there have been many examples of the power of God working through Elisha. 
 
What's interesting is that the moral condition of Israel in those days was exceptionally dark. One of the sons of Ahab was reigning as king at this time and he was little better than Ahab who was known for following after other gods. They had turned their back on Jehovah and were going after Molech, the Ashtoreth, Chemosh and others. 
 
But while the nation of Israel had turned their back on God, He was continuing to make Himself known to them by demonstrating his power through Elisha, making known the promises of his Word to them, and giving them the warnings that their unfaithfulness would bring death to the nation. 
 
As we pick up the story in 2 Kings 6, Israel found themselves in battle again with the Syrians and at this point, Syria had the upper hand and had even besieged Samaria, the capital of northern Israel. 
 
Besieging a city was a powerful tactic used in those days to destroy an enemy without risking the lives of the soldiers. And if it was successful, the city would be left intact with only the people destroyed within it. 
 
Things had become so desperate in the city of Samaria that a donkey's head was selling for 80 pieces of silver and two cups of dove's dung was selling for five shekels of silver. 
 
It was in the midst of this terrible famine that God made an unbelievable promise. The famine would end overnight and 2 gallons of flour would be selling for $.65. 
 
But as the story unfolds, it is filled with practical spiritual application and insight for all of us.

Perhaps you remember that just before Elijah was taken up to heaven Elisha had asked for a double portion of the spirit of Elijah. The story then unfolded as we saw Elisha walking in the spirit and power of Elijah. 
 
In 2 Kings 6, there are two stories of great importance for our study. These accounts demonstrate the power of God on Elisha, but they also give us great spiritual application for our own lives today as well. 
 
Both stories have to do with potentially terrible tragedies, but each of these is answered by the hand of God moving through Elisha. God demonstrates that He is mighty to save. But there's much more to it than that. Yes, God is mighty to save, but he also gives great spiritual insight so that we can grow in the learning of it. 
 
The first story is centered on one of the schools of the prophets that Elijah had established near the Jordan River. From verse one we read that the place where they were living was too small for them and they wanted to expand the school of the prophets. 
 
First, we should appreciate the fact that this was a spiritually dark time in Israel. They had gone from one bad king to another until finally they got to the worst king of all, Ahab, who had married that wicked woman Jezebel. Ahab's sons who reigned after him were not much better. 
 
So, in a spiritually dark time, the sons of the prophets needed to expand their school. That right there should be encouraging for us. We are certainly in a spiritually dark time today and it’s getting darker, but the Spirit of God is still moving on those whose hearts are turned toward Him. 
 
The sons of the prophets invited Elisha to go with them to the Jordan River where they hoped to cut down some trees and carve out some beams for the building of a new and larger school. While they were hard at work, one of their axe heads flew off the handle and was lost in the Jordan River.

As we come now in our study of 2 Kings 5, we are introduced to Naaman, a captain of the Syrian Army, an area known as Aram. We are told that Naaman was a great man with the king of Aram. He was highly respected, a valiant warrior, and he was even used of the Lord when God wanted to give a victory to Aram, no doubt because of Israel's hard heart. 
However, in spite of the fact that Naaman was such a highly respected man, he was a leper. He was highly successful; no doubt he was a hard worker, self-assured, self disciplined, self motivated, and self sacrificing. But all of that could not help him. He had leprosy and it was fatal. 
Leprosy was a debilitating disease that was greatly feared in all cultures and civilizations. Leprosy was incurable at that time, and has been incurable throughout the centuries. With modern medicines, the disease can be completely halted, but the devastating effects cannot be reversed. Today there are less than 100 cases reported in the US each year, but there are 100,000’s of cases reported every year throughout the world, 60% of which are in India. 
 Today leprosy is called Hansen’s disease because in 1873 a Norwegian doctor by the name of Hansen discovered that leprosy was caused by a bacterium. This bacterium is exceptionally resistant to antibiotic treatment and in fact by the 1960s, the world’s only known anti-leprosy drug became virtually useless. Only by utilizing a powerful multi-drug antibiotic therapy can leprosy be effectively treated today. And that treatment may take 2-3 years to complete. 
In the Old Testament, leprosy came to represent sin. There was no cure, it was progressive in nature, it was contagious, and it was fatal. It's interesting to note that God made a provision in the Law of Moses for what a priest should do if a man was ever healed of leprosy. But leprosy was incurable. In fact, the only person in the entire Old Testament that was ever cleansed of leprosy was Naaman and he wasn't a Hebrew, he was Syrian. 
This is an amazing story and filled with personal application and spiritual significance because we see the person and work of Jesus Christ very powerfully in this story. Being cleansed of leprosy is a picture of the salvation that we have in Christ and the picture here of a Gentile being the only leper cleansed is important as well.

We come now in our study through the Bible to 2 Kings 2. This is the famous story of when God took up Elijah to heaven. We say that God took up Elijah to heaven because Elijah is one of only two people who never experienced death. The other is Enoch. The Bible tells us that Enoch walked with God and was no more. 
 
The story here is also about Elisha. He had been walking with Elijah for perhaps six or seven years. Elijah had placed his mantle, or his cloak, upon him while Elisha was plowing his field one day with 12 pair of oxen. Elisha immediately recognized it as an invitation, went back to kiss his father and mother, sacrificed the oxen with what he was plowing and burned up the plow to do so. There was no turning back with Elisha. 
 
As the story in Chapter 2 unfolds, it becomes clear that Elijah's departure is well known. At least it is well known by the sons of the prophets in Israel. In verse three, the sons of the prophets came to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from you today?" "Yes I know, "Elijah responded, "be still." 
 
There is great personal application for us in this story because God reveals to us the workings of the Holy Spirit through these verses in the lives of Elijah and Elisha. We also see their heart revealed and so we gain great insight in that as well.
