In the last few verses of chapter 5 we read some of the most encouraging, life-changing words Paul has written. God is making all things new, old things pass away, and all this is from God who reconciled us to Himself through Christ. 
 
 That’s the key to transformation. Before, we were estranged from God and the result was emptiness of soul. If someone is empty then they start looking for love in all the wrong places, they look for life in all the wrong ways. 
 
 But we who were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ, Paul wrote in another place. We have been reconciled to God. That’s the amazing grace of God. 
 
 Having been brought near, it’s an opportunity; what will we do with it? He’s adopted us as a son or daughter; what will we do in that new relationship? In chapter 6 verse 1 Paul says, “I urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain.” What does it mean to receive the grace of God in vain? 
 
 You received the grace of God when you asked Jesus into your heart as Lord and Savior. You were made new in the sense that you were given eternal life instead of eternal death, you were adopted as a son or daughter; you were given a relationship to God as your Father. He took all your sins and placed them on His own Son on the cross of Calvary; He even took the righteousness of God and placed that upon you. What wonderful grace. 
 
 But if you receive all that grace and then don’t seize the opportunity to be transformed by it, you received the grace of God in vain. If you are adopted as God’s son or daughter, but then don’t live as a son or daughter, you’re not doing anything with the opportunity you’ve been given. If you’ve been given light, the treasure of the glory of God in your earthen vessel, but don’t do something with that light, that’s a tragedy. 
 
 Many of you are perhaps too young to remember when the Dallas Cowboys were a good football team. Their coach was the famous Tom Landry, considered a genius in football strategy, who called every play. At one point they drafted Roger Staubach, an accomplished quarterback who was used to calling his own plays. Under Tom Landry he had an opportunity to learn from one of the greatest call players in the history of football, but he resisted. Finally, someone challenged him to trust his coach; and the result – four Super Bowl appearances. 
 
 “I urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain,” Paul said, “now is the acceptable time, now is the day of salvation.” In other words, seize the day, seize the opportunity God has given you. How? That’s the point of chapter 6.

 In other words, we’re just clay pots; we’re just earthen vessels. That puts it all in perspective. What’s more important, the clay pot, the earthen vessel, or the great treasure of glory it contains? 
 
 This is a great encouragement, though our outer man is decaying, our inner man is being renewed day by day. 
 
 Life here on this earth is just temporary; there is a greater glory waiting for us. We walk through this life in these broken down tents, longing for that greater glory. But we don’t just long for that greater glory, God is preparing us for it. In fact, the troubles and difficulties of this life are producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, Paul said. Our inner man is being renewed day by day. 
 
 While we are here, living in this broken down world, how shall we live? “Walk by faith and not by sight,” Paul said. In other words, live by faith, knowing that we are leaving behind these old broken down earthen vessels and look forward to being in the presence of the Lord. 
 
 Walk by faith knowing that we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. In other words, how we live in this life matters and has a bearing on our future glory. 
 
 When you walk by faith, you’re walking in a relationship to God Himself. He gave us the Holy Spirit as a deposit, as a pledge, as a guarantee of the overflowing life God has in store for us in the future. In other words, we are experiencing the love of God right now. So much so that Paul said in verse 14,“The love of Christ controls us, having concluded this… That they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.” 
 
 Now, when we come to these verses, beginning in verse 17, Paul tells us the results of walking by faith. These truths are very personal and when we take hold of them we understand the power of true spiritual transformation.

Last week we were studying about Solomon, David's son through Bathsheba. Solomon was very young when he became king. He started out well. We read in chapter 3 that Solomon loved the Lord, though not as David did. We also read that God appeared to Solomon in a dream and allowed Solomon to ask for whatever he wished, which is amazing in and of itself. 
 
What Solomon asked God to give him was an understanding heart. He asked for wisdom to be able to judge the people of Israel, to be able to discern right from wrong; good from evil, because he knew that he was insufficient, that he was inadequate for what he was called to do. 
 
God was pleased with what Solomon had asked for and so he promised Solomon that he would give him what he had not asked for; that Solomon would have honor greater than all the kings in his day. That should remind us of Ephesians 3:20 which says, "Now unto Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us," 
 
The honor which God gave to Solomon and the greatness of his kingdom became famous throughout the known world in Solomon's day. People came from many nations to hear his wisdom and to be amazed at all that he had. The Queen of Sheba is one of those who came and was amazed at what she saw and heard. 
 
The Scripture tells us that there was so much gold in the kingdom of Solomon that silver was considered commonplace. He had a throne made of ivory, overlaid with gold with two great lions standing on each side. There were six steps leading up to his throne with a lion on each side of each step, 12 lions in all. He had 500 shields of gold hanging in his throne room. 
 
But one thing that God did not promise to give him was many wives; Solomon collected those all on his own; and that was the compromise that led to the great tragedy that followed. 
 
In our study today we want to look at the end of Solomon's reign and the beginning of the reign of his son Rehoboam. There are many lessons and personal applications that come to us as we look at these verses.

In 1 Kings 16 we meet Ahab, the seventh king of the northern kingdom of Israel. If you remember, the nation of Israel had become divided after Solomon's death; 10 tribes in the north called Israel and two tribes in the south called Judah. 
 
The moral condition of things in the north was not good. I saw a chart which listed the kings of the northern kingdom of Israel and it included a description of whether they were bad or good. Beginning with Jeroboam, the kings were listed as bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, very bad, and, the worst; that was the description of King Ahab. 
 
In verse 31 it reads, "as though it had been a trivial thing to walk in the sins of Jeroboam, Ahab married Jezebel and worshiped and served Baal." 
 
So, we are introduced both to King Ahab as well as to Jezebel. Without question, people know that Jezebel was a wicked woman. If a woman is described as a “Jezebel,” you can be sure it is in insult. People love to find interesting names for their daughters, but I have never yet met anyone who named their daughter Jezebel. Her name is used in the book of Revelation to describe a wicked and adulterous generation. 
 
Then, just as suddenly, we are introduced to Elijah in Chapter 17. He was perhaps the greatest prophet in the Old Testament. We know nothing of his background. We don't know who his parents were, although we do know that he was hairy in appearance. 
 
When we look at the times in which Elijah lived, there could be many comparisons made to the times in which we live. Many people were turning away from God and pursuing worldly things. If you were to do a study of the gods of Baal and Ashtoreth, you would see an amazing similarity to conditions today. It was all about money, power and sex. 
 
These were the gods that had caused God to remove the nations from that land and give it to Israel. Can you imagine how it must have broken God's heart to see his own people falling into such moral darkness? 
 
But today we want to learn from the life of Elijah. Here was a man who made a difference in his generation. He was a man of godly power and authority and his story is an opportunity for us to transform our lives as well. What were the secrets of the life of this man of God?

We've come now in our study through the Bible to Elijah, one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament. Remember that at this time, Israel was divided between the 10 tribes in the north, called Israel and two tribes in the south, called Judah. 
 
The king of the northern nation of Israel was Ahab who was the worst of all the kings that Israel had had. He married that wicked woman Jezebel and he went to serve Baal and worshiped him. 
 
So Ahab erected an altar for Baal and he also made the Asherah, which were wooden symbols of the female deity of sexuality. You don’t need much of an imagination to realize how ugly things became in Israel. Thus Ahab did more to provoke the God of Israel than all the kings of Israel who were before him. 
 
But Elijah was on fire for God and he rose up to make a difference in his generation. He was called of God to stand before Ahab and declare that there would be neither dew nor rain until he gave the word. After that, he went to the brook Cherith where God provided his needs. But then when the brook dried up God sent him to Zarephath. It's at Zarephath that our story takes place. 
 
When Elijah arrived at Zarephath, he met a widow who had come to the end of her resources and was preparing the last meal for her and her son after which she expected that they would die. But then Elijah arrived and said that her bowl of flour would not be exhausted and her jar of oil would not be empty until the Lord sent rain on the face of the earth. 
 
All was well for some time until it came about that the son of the widow became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. 
 
Here is where there are many applications for our own lives as well as there were for the widow and even for Elijah as well.

We've come now in our study through the Bible to Elijah, one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament. Remember that at this time, Israel was divided between the 10 tribes in the north, called Israel and two tribes in the south, called Judah.

The king of the northern nation of Israel was Ahab who was the worst of all the kings that Israel had had. He married that wicked woman Jezebel and he went to serve Baal and worshiped him.

So Ahab erected an altar for Baal and he also made the Asherah, which were wooden symbols of the female deity of sexuality. You don’t need much of an imagination to realize how ugly things became in Israel. Thus Ahab did more to provoke the God of Israel than all the kings of Isr

We are studying the life of Elijah, one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament. He lived in the northern kingdom of Israel. At this time, there were 10 tribes in the north called Israel, and two tribes in the south, called Judah. 
 
The events of our study take place during the reign of Ahab, perhaps the most wicked King of Israel, certainly the worst king that Israel had had to that point. Ahab had married that wicked woman, Jezebel, and had gone after the Baals and the Ashtoreth, those gods of sexuality that led people into terrible moral decline. 
 
Elijah’s heart was on fire for God and he stood up to make a difference in his generation. He stood before Ahab and declared that there would be no rain in Israel until he gave the word. That was 3 1/2 years before the events of 1 Kings 18. 
 
In chapter 18, God had told Elijah to show himself to King Ahab. He had been with a widow and her son in Zarephath in the area of Sidon, north of Israel along the Mediterranean Sea. As Elijah headed south he met one of Ahab's men named Obadiah. As it turned out, Obadiah was a good man who feared the Lord. Elijah said to him, "It is I. Go; say to your master, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’” 
 
And that is where our story unfolds because Ahab did come and the confrontation that followed will become an opportunity for us to gain great insights into our own hearts. God can use this story to illustrate lessons that each of us need to hear today.

As we are studying the life of Elijah, we find him at the lowest point of his life. What is interesting is that Elijah had just come from the highest point of victory just before he reached his lowest low. That itself is an interesting thing to remember. 
 
The northern kingdom of Israel was being led by the worst king that Israel had ever known. That would be King Ahab. As if it were a trivial thing to walk in the sins of his fathers, he married that wicked woman Jezebel and led the nation to follow after the false gods of Baal and Ashtoreth and to turn their back on Jehovah, the God of Israel. 
 
Elijah came on the scene and declared that there would be no rain in Israel until he gave the word. At the end of 3 1/2 years when Israel was suffering from a terrible drought, Elijah came to Ahab and directed him to bring 450 prophets of Baal to Mt. Carmel and to have all the people of Israel there as well. Elijah then issued a challenge that both Baal and Jehovah would be called upon to answer by fire and consume the sacrifice there are that mountain and that whichever God answered by fire, he is God. Only Jehovah answered that day so Elijah commanded that the 450 prophets of Baal be seized. They were then killed there at the brook Kishon. 
 
When Jezebel heard what had happened, she answered with some wrath of her own and threatened to have Elijah killed. That was when Elijah sank to his lowest low. He responded by running for his life and meeting God out in the desert and asking him to take his life because he had had enough. 
 
That was when we also saw the compassion of the Lord, because instead of rebuking Elijah, he fulfilled the scripture in 2 Corinthians 7:6 where it says, "God, who comforts the depressed,” ministered to Elijah and let him sleep and eat. 
 
But after comforting and strengthening Elijah it was then time to instruct him. It's not enough that God just comforts us through a dark or difficult time; he wants to teach us something through it. And the message that God had for Elijah was a message that we all need to receive for ourselves as well.

As we continue our study the life of Elijah, we pick it up in 1 Kings 18:39. Elijah had confronted Ahab along with 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. This was an open challenge so that the people of Israel would know that Jehovah was indeed God of Israel. The prophets of Baal were allowed to place a bullock on an altar and pray to Baal that he would answer by fire, but there was no voice and no one answered. 
 
This went on all day long with the prophets of Baal calling out loudly and even cutting themselves, but there was no answer. So at the end of the day at the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah prepared an altar, placed a bullock upon it, had it drenched with water three times and called out to Jehovah. 
 
God answered immediately with fire and consumed the bullock on the altar. When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces, and they said, "The Lord, he is God." Elijah immediately commanded that the 450 prophets of Baal be seized. They were brought down to the brook Kishon where they were killed. 
 
Elijah then went up to the top of Carmel, put his face between his knees and prayed. God had demonstrated his awesome power, the people cried out in recognition that Jehovah was indeed God, but there was still one more thing. God had promised that there would be rain and so again we see Elijah in prayer that God would fulfill his Word. 
 
There are two prayers of Elijah that we want to focus on today in our study. In these prayers we will see Elijah’s spiritual highs, but also his spiritual lows. And there are so many spiritual lessons for each one of us as we understand the application not only of Elijah's spiritual victories, but also when he reaches his lowest point.

As we come to the end of our study in 1 Kings, we come to a story that is centered on a vineyard in Jezreel in the northern kingdom of Israel. King Ahab had a palace in Jezreel as well as a palace in Samaria. It just so happened that next to his palace in Jezreel was a vineyard which was owned by a man named Naboth. Whenever Ahab came out of his palace in Jezreel he would see this beautiful vineyard and finally decided that he had to have it. The problem, of course, was that it wasn't his; it belonged to Naboth. 
 
Ahab's offer to Naboth was fair and reasonable. Naboth could either have a better vineyard in another location or he could have the price of it in money. 
 
What he hadn't counted on, however, was that Naboth was a man of biblical principle. He was a man of integrity. Naboth simply would not sell the land for any price because the land belonged to God and the Lord had told Israel that their inheritance should never be sold. He simply would not give Ahab the inheritance of his fathes. 
 
As the story unfolds, there is so much practical application for each one of us. We can learn from the example of Naboth. We can learn what not to do from watching Ahab and Jezebel. And we can learn from God as he reveals the principles of his Word for all of us.

After Paul wrote 1 Corinthians he waited many months to hear how they received it. Finally he received word that some took to heart his words of correction. They were teachable, they had open hearts; they had ears that could hear. That’s the way we should be, if we have open hearts and are willing to hold fast the word of truth, we grow in spiritual maturity. 
 
 Unfortunately others did not receive Paul’s letter so well. They took offense at Paul’s strong letter of correction and even began to question his authority as an apostle of Christ. 
 
 So Paul writes another letter, this one we are now studying. In this letter, Paul masterfully, humbly, and with great love for them, opens his heart. This is one of the most personal letters we have from Paul. Here he explains the gospel with power and great clarity; with much love he establishes his authority as an apostle of Christ, but he also writes with great power to bring spiritual revival. 
 
 That’s what they needed more than anything else, they needed spiritual revival. They needed to fall in love with their Savior afresh and anew, that’s what true spiritual maturity looks like. So this isn’t a letter just filled with theological truths. He doesn’t write simply to attack his opponents; he draws them again to the Savior. It’s beautiful, it’s masterful, it’s anointed by the Spirit and we ourselves will find spiritual revival when we take these words to heart. 
 
 The verses we are studying today are about authentic spiritual transformation. That’s what the church in Corinth needed more than anything else and that’s what we need as well. But the question is – where does transformation come from? Does it come from the do’s and don’ts of the works of the law? In other words, do we just need more self-help books? 
 
 No, we need the Holy Spirit. True spiritual transformation comes from true spiritual power. It’s a question of what fills the heart. Our hearts were made to be filled. There is a longing, a searching, a desiring inside of every man and if that is not filled with God’s glory through the Spirit, then men will try to fill it with things that are empty and even poisonous. 
 
 In Africa there were several streams of filthy water running through the city. People throw their garbage into it and relieve themselves there so it’s ugly and putrid. “Would you drink this water?” I said in one of my sermons. Of course everyone would say no. “Even if it was sweetened with sugar?” No, even if it’s sweet, it’s still dirty and poisonous. 
 
 This week in the news there were several examples of people melting down their lives. The stories of Lamar Odom and Steve Sarkisian are stark reminders that there is a deep longing in the soul, but what fills the soul will make every difference in the results of our lives. God made us to be filled with His glory, with His Spirit, with His love and joy and peace and that there would be meaning and purpose to our lives that is of far greater value than anything this world has to offer.
