This letter which we call 2 Corinthians is actually Paul’s third letter to the church in Corinth. We do not have the first. This letter we are now studying was written only about a year after 1 Corinthians. 
 
 The letter that Paul had just written was a letter of correction. There was a lot of spiritual immaturity in that church and he brought correction in one point after another. Some received that correction very well, but others took offense and essentially “threw Paul under the bus,” questioning his authority as an apostle of Christ. 
 
 It takes a certain degree of maturity to receive a word of correction, but that word of correction is the very thing that brings even more maturity. The one who is immature can’t receive correction at all - which means they will always stay immature. 
 
 “Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.” Proverbs 27:6 
 
 Today, we don’t really send a letter as much as simply sending an email; and we usually get a response fairly quickly. When Paul sent 1 Corinthians, it was hand delivered, probably by Titus, and Paul had to wait many months to know how they responded. He knew he wrote a strong letter, the very thing they needed, but was anxious to hear how they received it. 
 
 When Paul heard the news that there were many who received it well, he rejoiced; but he also heard that others responded by questioning his authority as an apostle. So he writes another letter. In this letter he explains the gospel with great power and clarity. He establishes the authority of his calling with great power, but he also becomes very personal with them. In fact, this is one of the most personal of all of Paul’s letters. 
 
 You get a sense of that in verse 4; “For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears… that you might know the love which I have especially for you.” In other words, Paul is saying that his letter of correction was painful for him to write. 
 
 The context of our verses today is that Paul came to Troas, hoping to find Titus and receive some news from the church at Corinth. But Titus wasn’t there and so Paul, “finding no rest for his spirit,” went on to Macedonia which is on the way to Corinth. 
 
 It’s here that Paul, reflecting on his life and ministry, gives us an insight into his faith. Paul shows us a faith that is victorious. It’s here we understand how Paul thinks; how he processes life. It’s a great opportunity for our faith to be strengthened as well.

Last week, as we wrapped up our study of 1 Corinthians, Paul was admonishing the church to be spiritually alert and to stand firm in the faith. What does it take to stand firm in the faith in a city like Corinth? What does it take to stand firm in our culture today? The answer is to have an undivided heart; to be steadfast and immovable knowing that the direction of your heart is exactly the opposite of the direction of the world. 
 
God also called Israel to have an undivided heart and he did that through the prophet Elijah. He was one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament. He lived in the northern kingdom of Israel during one of their darkest spiritual times. He lived during the reign of Ahab, perhaps the most wicked king in Israel’s history, certainly the worst king Israel had had to that point. Ahab married that wicked woman, Jezebel, and had gone after the Baals and the Ashtoreth; gods of sexuality that led people into terrible moral decline. 
 
Elijah’s heart was on fire for God and he stood to make a difference in his generation. God told Elijah to stand before Ahab and declare that there would be no rain in Israel until he gave the word. 
 
Three and half years later here in chapter 18, God told Elijah to show himself to King Ahab. As Elijah headed south he met one of Ahab's men named Obadiah. As it turned out, Obadiah was a good man who feared the Lord. Elijah said to him, “It is I. Go; say to your master, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’” 
 
That confrontation gives great insights into our own hearts. God uses this story to illustrate lessons that call each of us to have an undivided heart so we can stand firm.

This is our last message in the book of 1 Corinthians. Paul is writing to a church that needs a lot of correction because of their spiritual immaturity. He saved his last correction for the end; refuting those in the church who did not believe there is a resurrection. He brought compelling arguments to strengthen faith and then explained that if there is no resurrection, then even Christ Himself has not been raised from the dead. And if Christ has not been raised, then our faith is worthless and we are still in our sins. 
 
 But Christ has been raised and therefore we have an anchor for our soul; we have hope beyond this broken world in which we are now living. In other words, Paul is strengthening their faith and bringing them to greater spiritual maturity. 
 
 Here in this last chapter, Paul gives them more of a personal message. He gives them details about a collection of funds they were to receive for the church in Jerusalem that was going through a very difficult time, mostly because Rome was growing impatient with the difficult Jewish leadership. Of course we know from history that Rome marched on Jerusalem to destroy it and 66 A.D. and finally succeeded in 70 A.D. 
 
 In many ways we do the same thing. We are connected to churches all of the world and send them our support, our prayers, and our encouragement. I was just speaking to pastor George in Nairobi, Kenya who asked for prayer because a large mosque was built just across from them and they are allowed to point speakers directly toward the Bible Institute there and send out calls for Muslim prayers. In a couple of weeks I’m going to visit many churches in Africa and teach at conferences and bring support and encouragement. 
 Paul also writes to them about his travel plans and about some of the personal friends he ministers with; Timothy, Apollos, and others. 
 
 Then, in the middle of the chapter, he turns his heart toward them and gives them specific principles for living out their faith victoriously. We also need to grow in spiritual maturity and live out our faith victoriously, so these verses apply specifically to us as well.

As we get closer to the end of this letter to the church at Corinth, it seems that Paul has saved one of the most important corrections for the last. There was a debate in the church regarding whether or not there is a resurrection from the dead. 
 
 This is such so important that Paul takes a large section of this letter to prove the point. The resurrection is the foundation of all that we believe; it is the foundation of our hope. Without the resurrection, Paul will say to them, we have no hope. In fact, without the resurrection, our faith is worthless and we are still in our sins. 
 
We gather for worship on the first day of the week as a commemoration of the resurrection. In Russia, the first day of the week is called, “The day of the resurrection.” It should be called the day of the resurrection because all life comes from God and all new life comes from the resurrection of Jesus from the grave. 
 
 It’s interesting that Islam teaches that not only was Jesus not resurrected, he was never crucified! They believe that God took Jesus up and allowed someone else to die in his place. This is exactly the opposite of the Christian faith that declares that Christ died on the cross in our place. 
 
 To Paul this is of first importance. To be wrong on this is to miss the whole point of the gospel!! The resurrection is the key to God’s plan of the ages and His plan for our lives. If Christ is not raised from the dead, we have no hope. But because Christ is raised from the dead we have hope in this life and for eternity. 
 
 How about you, do you have hope? What do you put your hope in? In technology? That’s always changing. In the stock market? In the new deal with Iran? In the amazing strength of the United States economy? Even EF Hutton wouldn’t advise that. In politicians? If you put your hope in politicians to solve our problems, you will be sorely disappointed. 
 
If you have no hope, you have nothing. If you have lost hope, you have lost everything. Have you lost hope? There is a growing sense of hopelessness in many young people today. Sometimes devastating things happen in life that cause people to lose hope. Finances blow up and you can’t pay the bills, someone close to you dies and it’s impossible to understand why, your marriage is in shambles and you don’t know what to do, or your health tragically turns for the worse. It shows how important it is to have hope. 
 
 The resurrection is about newness of life and the hope that God gives in this life and for eternity. He ignites our soul and fills our lives with purpose and transforms us by His presence in our lives.

We have reached the last chapter of the book of Genesis. At this point, Jacob is now dead, after blessing and prophesying over all his sons. As he was nearing death he charged his sons that he wanted to be buried with his fathers in the land of Canaan. 
 The rest of the chapter tells us about the last years of Joseph’s life. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying about Joseph because he is such a powerful example of a man of faith and steadfastness of character. There is so much for us to apply to our own lives as we study Joseph. 
 It’s interesting how Abraham’s death is described. 
Genesis 25:8, Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life. Abraham finished well. Though Joseph had a difficult life, we can see in Genesis chapter 50 that Joseph also finished well. 
 Here are some secrets of finishing well that we can learn from studying Joseph’s life.

As we study through Genesis we have recently shifted our focus from Jacob, to Joseph and now recently to Joseph’s brothers. Clearly what we have seen in these brothers is that there were some serious character issues in their hearts. What we need to understand is that the problem really stems from a soul that is selfish and immature. 
 What we have also seen in this story is that God was working in their lives to work these things out of their lives. God is also committed to our spiritual condition. There is an old saying that captures this thought very well, “God loves us just the way we are, but loves us too much to let us stay that way.” 
 God will use even the storms of life, or a famine in the case of Joseph’s brothers, to work out the character problems in their lives. God is committed to changing us as well. 
 But what does true change really look like? As we study the process of change in Joseph’s brothers, there is a lot that we can apply to our lives as well.

As we study through Genesis we have recently shifted our focus from Jacob, to Joseph and now recently to Joseph’s brothers. Clearly what we have seen in these brothers is that there were some serious character issues in their hearts. What we need to understand is that the problem really stems from a soul that is selfish and immature.
 What we have also seen in this story is that God was working in their lives to work these things out of their lives. God is also committed to our spiritual condition. There is an old saying that captures this thought very well, “God loves us just the way we are, but loves us too much to let us stay that way.”
