This week we continue with one of the most famous chapters in all of the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13. Most people will recognize it as the chapter that teaches about love. And as I mentioned last week, these verses are read at almost every modern wedding because of its powerful message. 
But when Paul wrote this letter to the church at Corinth, it wasn’t just marriage he had on his heart. Love isn’t just something you apply to a specific relationship, love is something that should be the greater part of your character. In fact, love is what defines spiritual maturity. 
This entire letter to the church at Corinth is written to encourage their spiritual maturity. In an earlier chapter Paul wrote that he wanted to speak to them as spiritual men, those who were mature in Christ, but he could not, he had to write to them as those who were immature in their faith, babes in Christ. 
But what is maturity? Let’s first define immaturity; favoring one’s self at the expense of others. All you have to do is look at a young child to see immaturity. They want what they want and they want it now, regardless of who it belongs to. Maturity then, would be the opposite; favoring others at the expense of yourself. Verse 5 – “Love does not seek its own.”

Our study in Genesis now shifts its focus to Joseph, Jacob’s favorite son, the firstborn son of Rachel, the wife he had first fallen in love with. 
 Joseph had two dreams that didn’t take too much figuring to understand. The first dream, that his sheaf stood upright while those of the brothers bowed down, and the second dream, that the sun and the moon and eleven stars all bowed down to him, clearly said that Joseph would not just rise above his brothers, but even above Jacob as well. 
 It would be fair to say that the rest of the family did not interpret the dream with the same joy that Joseph did. In fact, they were jealous and angry with him. At one point when Jacob sent Joseph to check on the older brothers, they decided at first to kill him, but at Reuben’s insistence changed the plan to selling him as a slave for twenty pieces of silver. 
 In Egypt, he was purchased by Potiphar, and the hand of the Lord on his life was soon evident. Soon he was in charge of Potiphar’s estate and overseer of all he owned. But again tragedy strikes as he is falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife. And that is where we pick up our story. 
 Joseph is one of the great men of the bible who faces some of the most terrible and unjust circumstances possible and yet demonstrates the character of a powerful man of integrity. 
 The lessons we can learn from Joseph’s life are many. Everyone one of us has walked through difficult circumstances and surely there will be more difficult trials ahead. Here we gain insight into how to walk through difficult times.

As we continue our study in Genesis we find Joseph’s life taking a dramatic turn. It seemed that everything that could go wrong did go wrong. After receiving a dream from God that he would rise above his brothers, his brothers didn’t think much of Joseph’s dream and plotted to kill him. This was changed into an opportunity to make some money and he was sold as a slave instead. 
 Being purchased by Potiphar, captain of the bodyguard, he found great success in Potiphar’s house. But Potiphar’s wife tried to trap him into a liaison, but he refused. As a result he was thrown into prison, his dreams seeming impossibly distant. 
 Here again he found success and was trusted to oversee other prisoners. He was asked to oversee the chief cupbearer and chief baker who then each had dreams. Joseph was given the interpretation that the cupbearer would be restored, so Joseph asked that he remember to help him get out of prison. But he did not remember for two more years. 
 But then Pharaoh had a dream that no one could interpret, and the cupbearer remembered Joseph. When he appeared before Pharaoh he once again pointed toward God as the One to glorify and gave the interpretation – there would be seven years of prosperity followed by seven years of famine. He then suggested ways to prepare for the famine by storing up grain during the seven years of plenty. Pharaoh saw the wisdom of Joseph, set him in a place of authority that he might prepare for the nation for the years of famine. 
 He also gave Joseph an Egyptian wife and she bore him two sons. It is in the naming of these two sons that we focus our study this morning, because as he reveals his heart in the naming of these boys we gain insight into our own lives as well.

Last week we left Jacob as he was leaving his uncle Laban’s after getting wives and children and flocks. He sent word to Esau that he was on the way and then heard that Esau was coming out to meet him and there were 400 men with him. Fortunately, this part of the story ended well as in turned out to be a touching reunion. 
 But upon entering the land he was called to, he didn’t go to Bethel, but to Succoth instead and even built a house there, though God had called him to live in tents as a sojourner in that land. Later, he pitched his tent near Shechem, a worldly city, and even bought some land there. 
 And that’s when things went bad quickly. Dinah, Jacob’s daughter went into town to make some friends and a young man, also named Shechem, found her and raped her. Finally when the brothers found out about what had happened they convinced the men of the city to get circumcised and then on the third day when they were in pain, Simeon and Levi came to the city and destroyed every man and plundered the town, talking everything of value. 
 Jacob was greatly troubled at what they had done and so he said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble by making me to stink among the people of this land.” 
 And that’s where we start our study today. The flesh stinks! Wouldn’t it be great if we smelled like the great outdoors? But no, the flesh stinketh. Why? To make it clear that we need help! Here God speaks to Jacob and brings the help he needs; here are lessons we all need.

From our study last week to this week, twenty years have passed. Jacob was on the run from the mess he had made of his life and was on his way to his uncle Laban in Paddan-aram under the guise of finding a wife, which he did need, by the way. On the way he meets with God and has a dream where God gives him the blessings of Abraham and Isaac and he called that place Bethel – the house of God. 
 He then meets Rachel and her father Laban, falls in love with Rachel and works seven years for her since he has no dowry. Laban does some conniving of his own however, and puts Leah in Rachel’s place on the wedding night! He then works another seven years for Rachel. He then becomes wealthy through a bit more manipulation and cleverness. 
 Finally, God speaks to him and tells him to go back to the land of his fathers and that God would be with him. But then a problem arises – a very big problem. He had sent word to Esau that he was coming and the servants returned with the news, “Esau is coming to meet you and has 400 men with him.” 
 He sends gifts on ahead, but finally is alone and that night Jacob meets God again and this time they wrestle all night long. And this is where the scripture reveals some powerful insights for our lives as we may find ourselves wrestling with God.

As we continue our study through Genesis, we find Jacob now on the run. Jacob, the “heal-snatcher,” has made a royal mess of things by conniving and trickery and in cahoots with his mother Rebekah; he steals the blessing of his older brother Esau and as a result, Esau is now ready to kill him! 
 Actually it was Rebekah who decided it would be best for Jacob to leave so she came up with a cover story; Jacob needed a wife, which he did, and that if Jacob married one of the Canaanite women her life would not be worth living (using a strong dose of emotional manipulation). 
 Isaac agrees and sends Jacob off with his blessing and instructions to go to Rebekah’s brother, Laban. Those who have studied this story before and know a bit about the crafty, manipulative Laban, see a bit of poetic justice coming to Jacob. 
 So Jacob heads off to Paddan-aram to seek a wife and to run for his life, but on the way he has an encounter with God. 
 There are so many personal applications in this story and so we have the opportunity to learn not just from Jacob’s mistakes, but also from his relationship to God.

Abraham is called the father of our faith in the scriptures, and in many ways he is an example of trusting God completely. But he didn’t start out in his relationship with God always being victorious, Abraham grew in his faith. There were times when he failed. 
 In chapter 22, Abraham is an old man and has walked with God many years, and God is now going to give him the greatest test of his life. God is going to ask him to place on the altar that which meant the most in his life. 
 There is so much personal application in this study because we all hold onto things and God wants to know if we will truly trust Him in our lives or not. Are we willing to lay them before God and give them to Him with complete trust that He knows what He is doing?

We now come to Genesis 12 where meet Abraham who is called the father of our faith. Here is this section where we first meet him and see the beginning of faith. I say the beginning of faith because what we actually see in Abraham is a man who grows in faith. 
 We can be encouraged by his example, because we can relate to the fact that we want to believe, but are still growing in our faith. We are often like the man who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus and said, “If you can help him, please have pity on us.” “If you can?” Jesus said, “all things are possible to him who believes.” The man then responded, “I do believe, help my unbelief.” 
 When we first meet Abraham he is actually called Abram which means exalted father. The problem at this point is that Abram is not a father at all. Sarai (means princess), his wife, is barren and in that culture, being barren meant that they were thought to be cursed of God. 
 Abram is living in the city of Ur, a large city near the mouth of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. It is one of the earliest known civilizations in the world with great wealth and architectural development. There they worshiped the moon god, Nanna. No doubt Abram’s family was idol worshippers of that moon god when Abram was called of God.

We have following the life of Abram, soon to be named Abraham. We have seen him growing in faith as he faces trials and challenges in his life. But God now comes to Abram and calls him to live differently before God. He is calling Abram to be changed. 
 There is also a difference in our lives between a believer and a circumcised believer. We come to faith in Christ when we recognize that we are sinners and that we need God to forgive our wretchedness, but there is a point in a believer’s life when he must recognize that God wants more than just to give us salvation, He wants to give us a circumcised life.

In Genesis 15, Abram has just come from a battle in which he and his men defeated four regional kings. These kings had attacked Sodom where Abram’s nephew Lot was living and ended up taking Lot, his family and possessions captive. Abram rescued Lot and many others but now must be on guard. 
 God then comes to him in a vision and once again gives him promises on which Abram must learn to stand. 
 Here we see Abram growing in faith and increasing in blessing as he does. 
 There is a lot of practical application for us in these verses because we can all relate to the need to grow in our faith. Abraham is called the father of our faith and given as an example of a man who takes God at his word and believes what God says, though at the same time we see Abram takes some steps backward as well.

When God created Adam and Eve He told them to multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. Of course we know that people lived much longer lives in those days and had many sons and daughters, so the population of the earth increased very rapidly from the days of Adam to the days of Noah. 
 But when we come to the days of Noah we come to a very important time because Jesus told us that the last days will be like the days of Noah. I am convinced that we are living in the last days because of what we see happening in the world today, and I am convinced that Jesus is right – that these are days like the days of Noah. 
 What is interesting is that the days of Noah refer to two parts – to the time before the flood (the antediluvian period) and the time after the flood when God gave a covenant of grace to Noah. What Jesus was referring to was the time period before the flood when people were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage. 
 In other words, they were going through life as if everything was fine, everything was good, but everything was not fine, everything was not good – because there was something desperately wrong! 
 There are many lessons for us to learn as we go through the study of these verses.

 Paul wrote that he “did not shrink back from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.” We cannot give the whole counsel of God without giving the whole of God’s Word. 
 Genesis is a book of beginnings. In fact, the word, ‘Genesis’ actually means beginning. Here we understand the answers to some of the greatest questions people wrestle with, such as how did I come into being, who is God, what is His plan for the ages? 
 The book begins with a powerful statement that we should carefully note because it has great importance to the rest of God’s Word…

The Corinthian church had many, many issues of immaturity. The problem was that they came to Christ out of the city of Corinth, a city plagued with immorality and filled with pagan idols. It’s a huge challenge to take the church from that background and bring them to a place of spiritual maturity. 
The same is true for people today. We live in a culture very much like Corinth; immorality is everywhere around us and when someone comes to faith in Christ there are many, many areas in a person’s life that need to be transformed. 
Spiritual maturity is seen in godly character first and foremost. At the end of this chapter Paul says, “Earnestly desire the greater gifts, and I will show you a still more excellent way.” He then teaches them what it means to love. In fact, Paul says, the first in the list of the fruit of the Holy Spirit is love.
