In these chapters Paul refers to three kinds of 
people. There is the natural man; he does not accept 
the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness 
to him, and he cannot understand them, because they 
are spiritually appraised. 
Then there is the spiritual man. He has received, 
not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from 
God. He receives those things taught by the Spirit, 
combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words 
because he is growing in God’s wisdom. 
But also, there is the Christian who is immature 
in his faith. They are in Christ, but they are men 
2 
strongly influenced by the flesh. Paul says they are 
babes in Christ. That was the problem in the church in 
Corinth. They were a young church with many babes 
in Christ. 
Paul is writing to grow their faith, to bring 
spiritual maturity so they will be transformed from 
babes in Christ to those mature in faith. All fathers 
want their children to grow and mature. The same is 
true with God.

Paul is writing to the church in Corinth, a church that he founded on his second missionary journey. At this point, the church is only about five years old or so and therefore all of them are young in their faith. There’s a lot of spiritual immaturity. 
Paul is writing to strengthen their faith and help them grow in their maturity so they are no longer babes in Christ. 
 
Paul contrasts worldly wisdom to spiritual wisdom that God reveals to us through His Spirit, a wisdom that is eternal in nature; his point – spiritual wisdom makes spiritual men.

This is our first study through the books of first and second Corinthians. Paul started the church in Corinth on his second missionary journey. He was the first to introduce the gospel, to the Jews and then to the Gentiles. Paul had actually written a letter to the church prior to this letter and this one was written about 5 – 7 years after the church was founded. It was a young church with young Christians. They came from the Greek culture and brought a lot of their past with them when they became Christians. 
In other words, they are immature in their faith and Paul writes these letters to correct their ways and to build maturity in their faith.

In chapter 15, Paul shows us that the maturity of faith, the transformation that comes from the renewing of the mind, is well worth desiring because of what it brings about in our lives. 
Immaturity of faith is what causes someone to judge their brother or to look at their brother with contempt. But that only causes strife and brings division and hurt in relationships. If you love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself, then you have peace in your relationships; you have love in your heart and that’s way better than hurt, bitterness and broken relationships.
