In Romans chapter 12 and beyond Paul is describing the victorious life. Paul says it begins by presenting your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice. As I mentioned last week, the problem with living sacrifices is that they want to crawl off the altar. Therefore, to be a living sacrifice, it has to be because you’ve made the decision that you want to be there and you want to stay there, offering your life unto Him.

Paul has been telling us how concerned he is for his brethren, the Israelites because they do not have the surpassing victory which is ours in Christ Jesus our Lord. His heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is for their salvation, because they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 
They missed it, they stumbled over the stumbling stone. They took offense at God’s Son, but He was God’s answer so a sinner could have a relationship with the holy, righteous God. 
When we understand God’s heart toward Israel, we also understand His heart toward us.

The book of Romans is about victory, even surpassing victory through Him who loved us. “Nothing can separate us from the love of God which is found in Christ Jesus our Lord,” Paul said. 
But Paul has great sorrow and unceasing grief in his heart because his brethren, the Israelites, don’t have that surpassing victory. He said that if possible, he himself would be accursed, separated from Christ for their sake. That’s a good picture for us, because if you care about someone, you care about their soul; you want them to have the love of God which is found in Christ Jesus our Lord.

But we also have this flesh of ours; we were born with it and will die with it, but it must not master over us, we can be victorious because we have God as our Abba, Father and He sends His Holy Spirit to ignite our soul and strengthen us in our walk so we can have life and life abundantly.

In chapter 7, Paul describes what happens when the flesh is under the law. When a person lives under the law their flesh wants to rebel from it and they’re like a teenager with an attitude constantly resisting their parents’ rules. That brings the terrible conflict that Paul described in the famous verses, “I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. For that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I’m doing the very thing I hate… For the good that I wish, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not wish.” 
Paul built the conflict into a great crescendo and then shouted out, “Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death?” He immediately gives the answer, “Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
