We seem to be on a theme lately, with regards to giving thanks. Because this is one of my favourite topics as a worship leader, I'm going to use today's post to connect glorification of God with giving thanks to God. 
 
We read in scripture that our ultimate ambition, joy, and satisfaction are all found through glorifying God, but how do we do that? 
 
Many passages in the Bible remind us that we should seek God's glory, but since "glory" is kind of archaic language, I think many people haven't processed exactly what that means. How do we glorify someone who is already ultimately glorious? When we say, "Oh God, we give you glory," that seems redundant to one who has all the glory already! 
 
I think it's like this: we glorify God when we ENJOY Him. (I didn't come up with this on my own- it was John Piper who first wrote of "Christian Hedonism.") 
 
While that term seems slightly indulgent to me (and possibly prone to abuse), I do appreciate the concept. Piper summarized it with the phrase, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him." 
 
Read that again. 
 
"God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him." 
 
Are we satisfied in God? 
 
I think I can use my general attitude as a measurement stick. Am I fulfilled? Am I constantly longing for something else? Am I full of thanksgiving? 
 
It's that last one that I want to highlight today. 
 
If one fails to notice the beauty of the world around them, fails to appreciate the tastes, smells, sounds, and experiences of simply being alive, then I think that person is failing to glorify God. 
 
As we enjoy the world, and remember to give thanks for it, we give glory to God! That is worship. 
 
So you can see now why I think glorifying God is intimately connected with expressing thanks to God. When we notice, and appreciate God for the many things he's done, for the moments we experience pleasure, for the people who make us happy, that's when we glorify him. 
 
That's what this Psalmist is doing today. He encourages us to thank God for his faithful and steadfast love, which never ends.

I love verse four of this Psalm, and I suspect it's the key to the rest of the song! Verse four tells us to seek the Lord, and to seek his strength, and to seek his presence CONTINUALLY. 
 
What would happen to our lives, I wonder, if we were to really seek his presence not just on Sunday mornings when we're in church, but CONTINUALLY? How would our lives be transformed? What would be different about how we interact with other people? 
 
Imagine being so aware of the presence of God that you could honestly and passionately celebrate his judgements! At least for me, judgements and celebration don't really seem to go hand-in-hand. First of all, I don't think I want to be judged (without the blood of Jesus clearing the way, anyway), and second of all, it doesn't seem right to relish in judgement against someone else. 
 
But if we're so full of God's presence, so aware of his deeds among us, mindful of all the wonderful works he's done, then we'll truly know the loving character of our God! His judgements will seem beautiful to us, because we'll know the compassion and constancy behind them! 
 
Remember, God will never forgot his covenant, the one he commanded for a thousand generations, the one he made with Abraham, and his sworn promise to Isaac, and confirmed with Jacob!! We will inherit the land!

My daughter Rosie has a hamster named Angela Vanilla Peach. She's the cutest little thing, often busy carrying her bedding from place to place, running through the little maze we've connected to her cage, through the tunnels and pipes which join the different parts together. It's fun watching her go about her day, with a purpose beyond my understanding. 
 
It's a microcosm of this whole world, a tiny example of what's happening over every square inch of this earth. Life is everywhere, and every lifeform has a purpose to live, to store up for winter, to procreate, to eat, and maybe even other things that I could never guess. 
 
Isn't it amazing? All of this life is glorifying God by its complexity, it's pleasure in the mundane, it's mere existence! 
 
I worship with the Psalmist: this is a beautiful world we live in! Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord! 
 
I'd love to hear how you worship our God through your "mere existence."

I like the word refuge. 
 
If you search for the origins on Google, you'll see that it comes from Latin, where "re" and "fugere" mean "back" and "flee" respectively. The words "fugitive" and "refugee" are related, and the sense of those words helps you get an idea of the original source word. 
 
One of my favourite sites, Etymonline.com has this to say: 
 
"shelter or protection from danger or distress," late 14c., from Old French refuge "hiding place" (12c.), from Latin refugium "a taking refuge; place to flee back to," from re- "back" (see re-) + fugere "to flee" (see fugitive (adj.)) + -ium "place for." 
 
I can agree enthusiastically that God is my shelter and protection from danger and distress. He is my hiding place. I'm a refugee, a foreigner on this earth. 
 
From time to time one hears naysayers downplay religion and faith, and especially Christianity perhaps, as being a "crutch." The insinuation is that if one was strong, if one was able to stand on their own two feet, then they wouldn't need religion. 
 
I don't mind saying I'm weak. I'm the first to agree that I cannot stand on my own. I've proven to myself that I make poor choices when left to my knee-jerk ways. 
 
Does that make me crippled, inferior, in need of a crutch? Absolutely. And what better refuge that a God of love, the creator who calls himself our Father? 
 
There is none better.

This portion of scripture, Philippians 2:5-11, is very interesting to me. It's in a book that scholars all agree was written by Paul, however this portion does not have the typical language used by Paul. It appears to be some sort of poem, or creed, or hymn, and some speculate that it was one of the earliest Christian hymns. 
 
How cool is that? 
 
No one can be sure it was a hymn, or that it had a melody, but that didn't stop me from putting it to music for this generation! 
 
I put it in my Christian Creed's playlist, just because it does seem very credal in it's overview of the tenets of our faith. 
 
Wikipedia has a nice outline for the Letter to the Philippians, and says these verses are the model of living humbly - first, Christ’s emptying and then Christ’s exaltation. 
 
I struggled for ages with the right video to put with this. I went through a bunch of renaissance and baroque paintings of Jesus humbling himself by washing the disciples feet, or his resurrection (exaltation), etc. I also used a video of a river at my friend's house, which I recorded the other night. I finally decided on this painting, which is by Alonso Cano.

For some reason, iTunes and Spotify and the other music sites didn't have the whole recording of Psalm 34, so I decided this was a good time to remaster this song, and upload it again. That way I could maybe catch up with my one-song-a-week schedule. 
 
I added a classical guitar part, tuned up some bad intonation, and added drums for the last two choruses. Then I had it professionally mastered. Overall, I'm quite happy with the song's improvements. 
 
I love the notion that looking to God causes "radiance!" As we put our face toward God, his image will be reflected in us, shining on us! 
 
I pray that I never take my eyes off our Creator! I want to express his love everywhere I go. I want to be radiant with grace and peace and love.

From everlasting! That's such a long time. 
 
Recently I've been confronted with the reality of death again... an acquaintance has passed away recently, a young person full of life and vitality and beauty, newly married, and yet overtaken by the monster we call cancer. 
 
Whenever this kind of thing happens, I reflect on how short life really is. Whether you live 100 years or 1 year, in the span of eternity, in light of the millions of years humans have been here, in light of the eons before that this this earth spun in space, our lives are insignificant moments in time. 
 
And yet, none of this changes the reality that God is God. God is "our dwelling place," our reality. We die, we fall to dust, others take our place, and as this Psalm says, God continues to be God! 
 
In the middle of this Psalm, right after celebrating God's eternal nature, the writer asks God to release his people from torment and affliction, in compassion to satisfy us with his love so we can rejoice! 
 
Can you identify? Do you ever feel insignificant? Are you despairing from the situation you find yourself in? Take heart. God is God! He will always be God, in his love, mercy, faithfulness, and truth.

The last few months have been a challenge for me personally, and for many of us who attend a church in our village. Through a series of unfortunate events, and what amounts to essentially poor communication, we've been without a place to worship since September. 
 
Those of you who have followed my channel for some time will know that a group of us have been trying to build a congregation from new believers and disillusioned former-churchgoers. We started "The Crossing" service about 6 years ago. 
 
We embraced the liturgy, and the liturgical calendar of weekly scripture readings, but we used modern music and encouraged emotional engagement and expression. 
 
There has been something really beautiful about the way God has worked among us. 
 
Six years ago, we joined a local congregation, meeting in their church on Saturday nights. On the surface it may appear that we have lots in common: we're in the same building, we are using Anglican liturgy, and are led by an Anglican priest (when we have one- another story). We've helped raise lots of money to pay for the bills and expenses of such an old stone building. However, below the surface we worship in very different ways, and we seem to have a different understanding of what it means to live by faith than some of the people in the other group. 
 
There have been a few people who have been very antagonistic toward us, and to me specifically. They've accused me (behind my back, of course) of being in it for personal self-interest, and they've been calling it "The Jason Silver Show." I've heard people are saying that I have no education or experience (certainly not true) and silly things like "I sell miracles and hugs online!" It's funny, kind of, but there is a real destructive force behind this movement to undermine the work of God. 
 
I haven't wanted to talk about it much until now, because I don't want to get in the way of possible reconciliation. We are in the process of that restoration now, and I have hope for it to be much better when we come back.

I think one desire we all share - one longing most humans strive for, is to be known truly and deeply. 
 
Oftentimes we may fear it because such intimacy can be threatening. We get good at hiding our true selves from other people, and even from ourselves. It's scary to be seen plainly and purely, to have our best shielding and strongest defence mechanisms rendered ineffective, and yet we all secretly want it. 
 
God loves us, knows us fully, and protects us! What freedom to be ourselves!

It can be a real challenge to wait on the Lord patiently, especially in the face of wicked, evil people. It can appear that those wrong-doers always come out on top. 
 
Sometimes it seems like it doesn’t pay to be good! When the evil prosper and the good suffer, we may be tempted to doubt the goodness of God. You might even be tempted to say “Forget it!” and join the evildoers. 
 
Those people may drive the nicest cars and own the most toys, but they are like grass that is green one day, but faded and dry the next. 
 
Isn't it better to choose love and peace, kindness and patience, and self-control? It might not be very glamorous, but is has it's own beauty because it's the right thing to do, and because God has asked us to reflect his nature, not the nature of the evil one. 
 
It's essentially an exercise in submission: submitting to God's will for you, even when it seems crazy. 
 
You can be like David. Put on trust, put on obedience, put on patience, put on humility. Be delighted in the Lord!

"Hear O Israel" is part of the traditional and history of both ancient Israel and Christianity. 
 
First, in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 it says: 
"Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door-frames of your houses and on your gates." 
 
Later, when Jesus was teaching his followers, someone asked him what the most important commandment in the scriptures was. His answer is written in Mark 12:29-31. He says: 
"‘The most important one,’ answered Jesus, ‘is this: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these.’ 
 
We sing this often in our service, right after the sermon, as a way of reminding ourselves of this most critical teaching. There is only one God, and he deserves our everything, and we should love others the same way we love ourselves.

A new friend, who recently became a supporter at Patreon.com asked me to re-record the music for Psalm 89. The first version was done at the piano without a decent microphone, and really sounded pretty horrible. 
 
I'm happy she asked me, and happy with how it turned out. These verses from the Bible are beautiful, and seem like a prophetic indication of Jesus, who is of course from the line of David. 
 
I pray this song helps you to commit these verses to memory, so that the Bible becomes part of your every day thoughts, and your worship stems from the very word of God.

This weekend I'm at a wormen's conference for the Anglican church, called AWARE. It's being held at a camp near us called Camp IAWAH. A group of people from the worship team at our church is here with me-- it's been fun being part of such an important ministry! 
 
Yesterday while the women were in sessions, a couple of my guy-friends had some free time to hike, so I filmed part of our walk. The trees and leaves and cool breeze combine to make the most wonderful day!

This video is of a little abandoned church in Wilmer, Ontario. 
 
There's something sad and haunting about all these empty, little churches. I don't know if it's a common sight in other parts of the world but they seem to be everywhere around here. 
 
I suppose it's not that unusual, since so many people have stopped believing in and worshipping God. 
 
It was a beautiful, snowy Sunday afternoon, and I was driving home after playing organ in a church in Westport, Ontario. Everywhere I went was a potential postcard, but I didn't bother stopping anywhere until I came to this church.

I try to not let this happen, but I've written so many scripture songs that sometimes I accidentally write a duplicate. It's fascinating to see how I do it differently the second time around! 
 
A year or two ago I wrote another version of Luke 1:68-79, and it was more celebrational. This time around it's kind of pensive, but still a nice version I think.

 in the house of his servant David, 
70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 
71 that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. 
72 Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, 
 and has remembered his holy covenant, 
73 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, 
 to grant us 74 that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, 
might serve him without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness 
 before him all our days. 
76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; 
 for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people 
 by the forgiveness of their sins. 
78 By the tender mercy of our God, 
 the dawn from on high will break upon[b] us, 
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, 
 to guide our feet into the way of peace.’
