Seek Peace - Philippians 4:2-9 - August 9, 2020 Sermon

In the final verses of Philippians 3, Paul teaches that the people whom we imitate are indicators of our true citizenship. A passage of contrast, Philippians 3:17-21, indicates that there are two ways of walking led by two different guides that will result in two very different destinations. For believers he says in v.20-21 “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious Body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.”  
 
Paul is telling the Philippians that the church is a little colony of the kingdom of heaven. When you are in the presence of God’s people, their values and their lives should point to heaven. In this passage he calls believers to look at his life as an example of Christian maturity, and he implores the believers to emulate those who eagerly await Jesus’ return, not those whose mind is on earthly things.

A Portrait of Gospel-Centered Lives - 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 - June 28, 2020 Sermon

Paul writes to the church of Philippi with much love in his heart for them. Throughout the epistle he shares his love for the church by saying things like, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy” (Phil. 1:3-4) and “I hold you in my heart” (Phil 1:7). Yet, when one reads the book of Philippians, they realize that there was a tension among the believers that threatened the unity of the church. Paul desired a unity in the church so that the individual members would link their arms together and advance the gospel of Christ.  
 
For the gospel to advance effectively, believers must cooperate together.  Without unity the church will struggle to advance the gospel. Christians, we are better together.   
 
Today’s text takes the foundational truth from last week’s sermon, Christians are better together, and adds a very important lesson. There can be no unity without humility. Additionally, the text answers other questions such as: what does a humility driven unity look like and how does Jesus Christ, showcase this humility? We will take the commandment found in vs. 5, “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus” and use it as a lens to examine the rest of Philippians 2:1-11. We propose that Christians are to cultivate a unified mind of Christ by considering His humiliation and exaltation.

Roman citizenship was a primary source of identity, with associated benefits and privileges. Into this context, Paul commands the Philippian believers to grasp their status as Heavenly citizens, and also live in a worthy manner of that eternal kingdom. But what does it mean to live worthy? How do I know if I am doing a good job? What does this even look like? Read Philippians 1:27-30 in preparation for our continued study of this book. See if you can find three illustrations of how a Heavenly citizen is supposed to live. Portraits of Heavenly Citizens - Philippians 1:27-30 - June 14, 2020 Sermon

Isolation is a time of testing and temptation. We discover that we are more sinful than we thought and that we are not as spiritual as we thought. It’s a time of self-discovery! But we’re not the first Christians to experience social isolation. When James wrote his letter, he wrote to Christians in the dispersion, or spread out throughout the Roman empire. They too were isolated. So James opens his letter with some wisdom and instruction for all Christians in times of testing. May God give us hearts of wisdom during these times of testing.

While imprisoned in Rome, Paul was reflecting upon the ministry that had taken place in the city of Philippi. It was an urban context where the gospel was proclaimed, it took root, and bore precious fruit in the years that followed. It all started on the riverbank where a prayer meeting was being held, and from there, the gospel continued to spread. The good news, the message of hope and life even made it down to the city’s innermost prison. The Gospel was powerfully changing people and a church was ultimately established. You can almost picture Paul sitting in his Roman imprisonment reflecting on the amazing work of God. God had done some really incredible things in Philippi, and he can do the same today right here in Salt Lake City through the power of the gospel. May he encourage our hearts with his great work of grace today.

Our passage for the morning is a prayer that hope, joy and peace would not just be present in your life, but that you would be filled to overflowing. In preparation you might read Romans 15:1-13 and Isaiah 11:1-10. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

Advent Week 1 - Romans 15:12-13 - December 1, 2019 Sermon

John tells believers that when they love one another their love is “made perfect.” The word “perfect” conveys the idea of arriving at a destination – like when one finishes a long trip or completes the construction of a new home. “Perfect” can also mean mature – like a child who grows into a fully developed adult. John has already stated that God’s love “is perfected in us” (has reached its goal) when believers choose to actively love one another (4:12). In the following verses (17-21), John directs his attention towards the perfection of the believer’s love. He reveals that the believer’s love has reached a state of maturity when he can look towards God’s future day of judgment with confidence and when he can love others in this present day without fear.

Knowing and loving God is our greatest privilege, and being known and loved is God’s greatest pleasure. Perhaps that’s why Paul closes the book of Ephesians with a call to love the Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible (Eph 6:24). The concept of love is a big theme in Ephesians – Paul mentions it almost 20 times. But unfortunately, in the hustle and bustle of promoting orthodoxy and protecting truth, the church at Ephesus lost its first love. By the time the apostle John writes the book of Revelation (some 33 years later), affections waned, hearts drifted, and the Ephesian church had abandoned the foundational love that once characterized them (Rev 2:4). 
 
Loving God and others is a choice, not an accident. It must be intentionally sought and passionately pursued or it will fade into a distant memory of a time gone by. Christ says that a church without love will be removed, so may such a warning call our hearts back to the Lord and grow our love for him and others.

But, when we meet Jesus, the light of the world, something incredible happens. We are no longer darkness. We are now light. And that light should affect everything about us. So, because of that fundamental change in identity, we are to walk as children of light.
