After the Israelites settled in the promised land of Canaan, they were supposed to gather three times a year at the sanctuary of the Lord. These pilgrimage feasts known as Passover, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Booths were instituted to help God’s people remember where they came from, rejoice in God’s work of forming a nation, and respond to his gracious provision. Memorial feasts were a significant part of the Jewish calendar because their original intent was to point people back to God’s great work. Today the church community doesn’t celebrate all of the same festivals but the theological purpose behind them should still cause us to remember, rejoice in, and respond to God’s work. May our hearts be pointed back to Lord.

When it comes to worship, God makes the rules; culture is not permitted to determine what is good and right. They were about to be blessed beyond measure and inherit what they could only have dreamed of as former slaves in Egypt. And the temptation of blessed and victorious people is to attribute success to one’s own goodness instead of God’s graciousness. So, Moses made it clear that the favor of God is a gift to be received not a prize to be earned. His blessings are tokens of divine generosity, not rewards for personal merit. Centuries later, the apostle Peter would look to the church and say, “you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession… Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy… that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Pet. 2:9-10). May we learn to live distinctively because we are the elect of the true and living God.

Our government is not protecting the innocents nor is it penalizing the guilty. Instead, it has abdicated its responsibility and millions of unborn babies are paying the price. If we believe the bible, then we must speak out against the injustice of abortion. If we believe the gospel, then we must compassionately introduce sinners to a God who forgives entirely, heals deeply, and restores completely. Our holy God hates abortion. But our loving God forgives sinners. May the Lord lead us in both grace and truth as we consider the sanctity of life this Sunday.

As we enter the last week of 2020 and look ahead to the unknowns of the next few months, what do we need to remember more than anything else? From Romans 8:35-39, the Apostle Paul would say, "the love of God." God is love, and that means that His love and all of His other attributes work in harmony. His love and His omniscience and omnipresence and omnipotence all come together in an unstoppable purpose to do His people good. (See also Romans 5:3-5, 8:28-30) In today's text, Paul asks a sweeping question and then answers it with unequivocal logic: "Can anything separate us from the love of God?" No! God is love, and that love is inseparable, unshakable, and unending for those who are in Christ Jesus. C.H. Spurgeon reminded us of this when he preached, "Before [any] of creation had struggled from nothingness, God, even our God, had set his heart upon all his children. Since that time, has he once swerved, has he once turned aside, once changed? No; you who have tasted of his love and know his grace, will bear me witness, that He has been a certain friend in uncertain circumstances. You have often left him; has he ever left you? You have had many trials and troubles; has he ever deserted you? Has he ever turned away his heart, and shut up his bowels of compassion? No, children of God, it is your solemn duty to say “No,” and bear witness to his faithfulness." As we consider the day ahead, may we find that the steadfast love of the Lord holds us up. (Psalm 94:17-19)

News stations, educational institutions, career advisors, friends and family all have a say, but unfortunately God gets tuned out. One author referred to it as the “gagging of God.” But lest we think it is a unique phenomenon, a quick glance at Deuteronomy shows us that the problem is not new. The Israelites were on border of Canaan and lots of voices were shouting into the microphone claiming airtime. But Moses spoke above the chaos and told the people to listen to the word of God. Isn’t that what we need to do today? We need to quiet the noise and listen to the still small voice. We need to clear some space and really pursue God. Such an endeavor will require rooting out all that threatens our relationship with the Lord, but the effort is worth it. There is none like the one true and living God. So, let’s faithfully pursue him together. May the Lord encourage us through his word and empower us by his Spirit.

There's No Other God - Deuteronomy 4:1-40 - November 22, 2020 Sermon

Harold Kushner aptly explained how, “When we think of Moses, we think of his triumphs… But Moses was a man who knew frustration and failure in his public and personal life at least as often and as deeply as he knew fulfillment.”[1] Just think about what it must have been like for Moses to stutter step in Egypt as he grasped for pre-mature leadership, only to spend 40 years living like a sheep herder as a result. Then he’s called out of retirement to lead the exodus, only to inherit a bunch of whining and complaining people. At one point, they infuriate him with their discontentment and distrust to the point where he disobeys the Lord in anger; he strikes the rock instead of speaking to it. In that moment of frustration, Moses lost it all. He was prohibited from entering the land of promise. Decades of work, long-term suffering and sacrifice, endurance right to the finish line, resulted in falling short in the end. Moses understood failure, and he felt the pain of frustration. And some of his experiences are recorded for our example. May the Lord teach us from his word as we seek to turn to him in our deepest disappointments.

How To Finish Well - Deuteronomy 3:12-29 - November 1, 2020 Sermon

Have you ever been at a place in life where either the consequences of the past or the prospects of the future seem almost overwhelming? In Deuteronomy 2-3 the Israelites looked back over 38 years and saw nothing but frightening skeletons and dry desserts. When they hesitantly peered forward, they saw insurmountable obstacles and giant difficulties on every front. You can probably imagine how difficult their next steps of obedience must have been. God called his people to move forward by faith right into a space of conflict and a territory of opposition. But through it all, he wanted them to understand that he was sovereign. And perhaps that’s what God wants to teach us. He is sovereign over lands and life itself. The question is, have you submitted to his sovereignty over you? May the Lord convince us of his greatness and cause our hearts to bow before him as we look into his word together.

God is Sovereign Over Land, Life, and You - Deuteronomy 2:1-3:11 - October 18, 2020 Sermon

In the opening chapters of Deuteronomy, we encounter a journey through what A. J. Culp calls, “moments of decision.” The people of Israel are reminded of events in their past so that they will make fresh decisions of faith for the future. It’s as though God wants to encourage them to decide in their hearts that they will wholly follow him right across the boundary line of Canaan into the blessings that he has in store for them. As events unfold, the Israelites quickly discover that fear and faith don’t mix. So, Moses encourages the people not to make the fatal mistake of unbelief. His clarion call in the second half of Deuteronomy 1 is, “Trust God and don’t suffer the fate of your forebears.” May the Lord help us hear his voice and follow his lead by faith.

In the opening chapters of Deuteronomy, we encounter a journey through what A. J. Culp calls, “moments of decision.” The people of Israel are reminded of events in their past so that they will make fresh decisions of faith for the future. It’s as though God wants to encourage them to decide in their hearts that they will wholly follow him right across the boundary line of Canaan into the blessings that he has in store for them. As events unfold, the Israelites quickly discover that fear and faith don’t mix. So, Moses encourages the people not to make the fatal mistake of unbelief. His clarion call in the second half of Deuteronomy 1 is, “Trust God and don’t suffer the fate of your forebears.” May the Lord help us hear his voice and follow his lead by faith.

There are times along life’s journey when God breaks into the gridlock and lets sojourners know that they’ve been in one place “long enough.” Such was the case with Israel at the base of Mount Horeb (Deut. 1:6), and then again at the end of their wilderness wandering (Deut. 2:3). The purpose of waiting had been fulfilled. The time of wandering had come to an end, and now was the moment to move forward. Sometimes when we are stuck in life, we wonder if the season of standstill will ever come to an end. But, when God says it’s time to move on, he often does so by reminding us of his promises and leading us to their fulfillment by faith. As we study (Deut. 1:1-18), may the promises of our faithful God fill us with hope, and may the fulfillment of his covenant blessings spur us to move forward by faith.
