I John 2:16a 
 
"For all that is in the world, the lust (or the desire) of the flesh,..." 
 
 
That can be any of our appetites. And any one of them can get the best of us. In Eve's case, she saw that it was good for food. We are going to see that it was the same case with the Lord Jesus. But it can be any kind of a fleshly desire that overwhelms us and we have to be aware of those, because they will trip us every time. 
 
 
I John 2:16b 
 
"...and the lust of the eyes,..." 
 
 
In other words, that which looks so alluring, remember the old cliché is "all that glitters is not gold". So you have to be aware of that. Then John goes on to say that the other great area of temptation is:

"...and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world." 
 
 
Now you see, pride is one of the biggest things that befalls the human race. Pride is probably the one thing that keeps more people from salvation than anything else. People are too proud to admit that they need anything that God has to give them. I can make it on my own. To submit to a Sovereign God and to admit that He is what I need. No thanks, is what most of the world says. 
 
 
So look at them again. It's the lust of the flesh. The lust of the eye and the pride of life. I said the Lord Jesus faced those same set of three circumstances. Go back to Matthew chapter 4. These are normally referred to as "the temptations, " and let's just drop down to verse 1.

Genesis 2:8

You know, I thought of something the other day that I had never thought of before, as long as I have been teaching. And, I wonder how many of you have? Where do you suppose he actually lived with his beautiful wife? Have you ever thought of that? 
 
 
Did God give them a home? Did they just lay down in some vegetation and sleep? Did they just totally eat off the trees and fruits or did they have a place where they could prepare a meal? Have you ever thought about it? I never had, but I think it is something interesting to think about. Where did they actually live? 
 
 
I think most of us always just think of Adam and Eve in that beautiful garden and that was it. Well, the Bible doesn't tell us and there are a lot of things that the Bible can't tell us because if it told us everything we would like to know, we would have to have a truck to carry it around. But, God has seen fit to make it concise enough that we have everything we need to know and yet, in a book small enough that we can carry wherever we go. 
 
 
So, God placed him in the Garden. Then verse 9.

Genesis 2:8 "And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed." You know ...

Now I've made comments in my classes over the years, that probably 85-90% of Christendom (when I use the word Christendom, remember, I'm talking about any organization or denomination or whatever you want to call it, that ascribes a least a part of their belief to the Bible.) So, 90% of Christendom, and I am including all of Protestantism, the Catholic Church and any others that are in this ballpark of Christendom, are of the opinion that since Israel killed her Messiah, that God literally put Israel out of His mind and transferred all of the promises given to Israel to "the Church". 
 
 
But, you see the Bible flies in the face of that thinking. So if you will, turn with me back to II Samuel chapter 7. The only reason I am taking time to jump ahead is because it is going to be a long time before we get this far in our study coming out of Genesis and since the Middle East is in such a turmoil, I thought it might be appropriate to at least spend a few moments. I am just taking a few of the clearest references to the fact that Israel is not there by accident. Israel is there under the directive of a Sovereign God. Never forget, as I have mentioned already several times since we have begun this study on television, that God is Sovereign. 
 
 
He can do whatever He wants to do! And, it is not for the human mind to question. Because the Scripture tells us that His thoughts are higher than our thoughts, His ways are higher than our ways. Consequently, we are in no position to question. Now II Samuel chapter 7, the Lord is talking to old King David, remember this is about 1000 BC. He's talking to King David through the prophet Nathan. Drop down to verse 14. 
 
 
II Samuel 7:14 
 
"I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, (The word He, the pronoun is directly associated with Solomon, but it also includes the whole nation of Israel. Iniquity, we know that Israel has been guilty of that) I will chasten him with the rod of men, (in other words, God will use other nations to punish the nation of Israel) and with the stripes of the children of men:" 
 
 
Then verse 15. One of the important words in Scripture. That little three letter word "but"! B-u-t. Even though God will have to chasten the nation of Israel betimes, and even though Israel is going to be rebellious and anything but what God would like them to be. "But" God says: 
 
 
II Samuel 7:15 
 
"But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee."

Genesis 2:4 
 
"These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens," 
 
 
We pointed out last time that all through chapter one, we simply had the word God. 
 
G-o-d. But now, since the six days of creation are complete, man is on the scene and the name of Deity is introduced as the LORD God or Jehovah God. 
 
 
I think it probably helps if we can break down that name Jehovah a little bit. I feel real confident that I am on the right track because several years ago my wife and I were in Israel and we ran through this whole thing with a well educated young Israeli, who was a high school principal. He had his Master's Degree and when we laid this out before him, not on a blackboard, of course, and not with the benefit of any notes per se, he was just aghast. He said, you are right! I can't disagree with a bit of it. But, I can't wait now to get home and look this up in my New Testament, because what we are really doing is bringing us all the way down to the appearance of Christ Himself. 
 
 
So the name Jehovah really comes from two Hebrew words, the "Jahwe" that most of you have heard and the second Hebrew term is "Havah". Now the definition for the Hebrew Deity name "Jahwe" was the I AM. 
 
 
If you remember when Moses was at the burning bush and he said, "When I go back to the children of Israel and tell them that God has sent me, they are going to ask me "What is his name? What shall I tell them." And remember what the voice in the burning bush said "You tell the children of Israel that I AM hath sent you." The I AM THAT I AM. Alright that was the definition of "Jahwe". The eternal preexistent I AM. 
 
 
You add to that then, the definition of "Havah" which really meant the I AM is "to be revealed". Now that is more or less the continuing action type of verb. So the eternal preexistent I AM would be more and more and more revealed as we come on up through human history.

Genesis 1:27

In the last lesson, I took you back to chapter 5. Let's look at it again, just for a quick review. Genesis chapter 5 verse 2. This is a recap. This is a summarization. 
 
 
Genesis 5:2 
 
"Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created." 
 
 
He doesn't refer to the woman. He doesn't refer to Eve, He merely says He created THEM and called THEIR name Adam. They were both in Adam. 
 
 
Come back and let's pick up the creation of woman. Turn to chapter 2. We will come back to the earlier verses, but just to pick up the appearance of the woman. She won't be called Eve until after the fall, she is only referred to as the woman. 
 
 
Now in chapter 2, Adam has just given names to all the other living creatures and as I mentioned, then he must have had an inkling of what it would be like to have a help meet as he saw all of these creatures already with the female and the male and their mates. 
 
 
God realized that He needed a help meet, such as up in verse 18. Now in verse 21 after Adam has named all the species of the animal kingdom and the birds and what have you, it says: 
 
 
Genesis 2:21-22 
 
"And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: (first instance of anesthesia, isn't it? So he put Adam to sleep and is going to do some surgery on the old boy!) and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22. And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man." 
 
 
I, for one, like to take the Scripture as logically as we possibly can. I know that we take it by faith, and I don't want anybody to come up and say you can't take Scripture logically. I think a lot of times we can. And, especially from the scientific side. There is so much pure science in Scripture that most people miss.

"And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it (the firmament) divide the waters from the waters." 
 
 
Now all you have to do here is just very carefully analyze the wording, and it becomes evident what took place. The word firmament is what we call our atmosphere, it's what we call our sky, and it may also involve a certain portion of what we would call space, the closer planets or whatever. But for the most part I like to look at firmament as our atmosphere. If you pick that verse apart carefully it says, "that God is going to divide the water that was covering the earth as a result of earlier judgment in the form of a flood." I referred to it earlier as the first flood. 
 
 
But now the Scriptures said that God is going to divide this water by taking ½ of it and moving it above the atmosphere. I like to picture that, if I may, as a giant vapor belt out in space, above the earth. Later in the Scriptures we're going to see that vapor belt come back on the earth in the form of Noah's flood, which was several hundred years later. But for now let's just picture this vapor belt out here in space, but remember that ½ the water has been left on the earth. Now let's read what happens next in verse 7. 
 
 
 
 
Genesis 1:7 
 
"And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament (the atmosphere) from the waters which were above the firmament: (atmosphere) and it was so." 
 
 
See that's just plain English. He takes ½ the water, and He lifts it up above the atmosphere, but He leaves ½ of the water on the earth. Now verse 8.

I think it behooves us to just constantly remind ourselves of these from time to time that God is Sovereign. He is absolutely Sovereign, and there is no one above Him. He never has to go to someone else for advice or for questioning. He is absolute in His Sovereignty. Secondly, we can say that God is immutable, and the best verse that most of us know concerning that is in the Book of Hebrews where it says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever!" He has never changed in the past, He has not changed as of today, and He will never change in the eternity future, because He is immutable! 
 
 
I have some school teachers in my classes and they like to tell me that the kids will remind them every once in a while, "After all we're living in the 1990's," as if that makes all the difference in the world. But concerning God, the things that God laid down at the beginning are still applicable today. God hasn't changed His attitude toward sin simply because it's a later time in human history. He is immutable, and the things that He declared anathema back there in the Old Testament, are still the same in His sight today, and they will be in the future if He tarries, because God changes not! God is always the same! 
 
 
Those of you who dealt with human beings a lot more years even than I have known, that you've had people in your experience that maybe at one time you could trust them explicitly. But maybe sometime years later you found that that you couldn't trust them, well what's happened? Well they've had a change their attitudes and they are not immutable, but God is. God never changes!

1 1 3 Through the Bible with Les Feldick    Attributes of God: Genesis 1:1-5

My goodness, how many folks are telling us for the first time they're understanding the Bible and they're enjoying it and simply because they suddenly understand that what is written to Israel is for Israel; what's written for the Church is for the Church. And even though it's all under the same God, yet it's two totally different scenarios. And that's why there's so much confusion. Many think the Church is Israel, and Israel is the Church. But if the Word is rightly divided as Paul tells us to do, then just leave the Scriptures where they are. You don't have to move them around to make them fit. 
 
 
An easy way to do that is always remember the risen Lord chose Paul to be the Apostle to the Gentiles (Romans 11:13) and gave him the administration or dispensation of Grace from him to us, the Body of Christ. (Ephesians 3:2) So Paul's epistles are our instructions in this age of Grace for our doctrine, and Christian living in general. 
 
 
You know I've used the illustration over and over and the other day somebody sent me a little booklet where somebody used almost the same kind of an illustration, but I use the one that a fellow came up and used on me one night, years ago. He said, "all my life all they've ever done with the Scriptures is throw it into a blender (now this is symbolism, of course) they throw it into a blender, turn it up on high, ladle it out and then we wonder why I get sick to my stomach." 
 
 
Well of course, what he is simply saying is that all everybody does is mix everything together. They never sort out the differences, and it gives you Spiritual indigestion. You just can't handle it. And so this is the whole secret of, I think, our teaching ministry is to show the difference between God's dealing with Israel through Christ's ministry and the Twelve, and then sending the other apostle, the Apostle of the Gentiles, the Apostle of Grace, the Apostle Paul to the Gentile world with this glorious Gospel of Grace. 
 
 
All right, for months now we've been here in these little Jewish epistles here at the back of your Bible, so I always point out how Jewish this is and then compare it with what Paul says in our present day. All right, now here's another good example. We're in I John chapter 5 verse 11. 
 
 
I John 5:11 
 
"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son."

Romans 15:8a 
 
"Now I say that Jesus Christ (what's the verb?) was...." Somebody was jumping on my use of the verbs and I had to show them 15:8. It is the verb "was." 
 
 
Romans 15:8 
 
"Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the (what?) circumcision (and who's circumcision in Scripture? Israel!) for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:" It wasn't Paul's idea. It was all part of the eternal purposes. Well who were the 'fathers' in Scripture? Israel's forefathers. Abraham. Isaac. Jacob. And on up through Israel's history. So why did Jesus come? "To fulfill the promises made to the Nation of Israel." And what were those promises? That He would come and give them an earthly Kingdom over which there would be no suffering under the Roman Empire. There would be no persecution. There would be no sickness. There would be no death. It would be literally heaven on earth. And He'd be the King. 
 
 
And then in Matthew what did He promise the Twelve? "That they would sit on twelve thrones ruling the twelve tribes of Israel." That was all part and parcel of the promises made to the fathers. So everything is leading up to this coming of the King, but Israel could not believe it. They could not accept Jesus of Nazareth as that promised King of the Kings, so they fulfilled the purposes of God. They crucified Him. 
 
 
All right, God raised Him from the dead. Called Him back to Glory (we've gone through this before, at the ascension). But Peter and the Eleven keep right on preaching the Old Testament promises that this One Whom they crucified was alive and, as soon as the horrors of the seven years of Daniel's seventieth week, which we call the Tribulation had passed, the King would yet come and bring in the Kingdom. Now when you follow that whole concept through, Peter in the early Acts and then the little Jewish epistles of James and Peter and John and Jude and Revelation, everything is looking at the unfolding of the Tribulation, the Second Coming and the Kingdom Age. 
 
 
But there's one thing that wasn't revealed to them. There's nothing in here of the Church Age. Nothing of calling out a body of Gentiles, which we call the Church. But rather it was all fulfilling the promises made to the fathers. And that's why these little Jewish epistles are on that same timeline and as I pointed out when we introduced the little book of James, all of these writers had made a gentleman's agreement with Paul and Barnabas back there at the Jerusalem counsel in about 51 or 52 AD. And at that Jerusalem counsel, you remember, they shook hands. They gave the right hands of fellowship, James and Peter and John with Paul and Barnabas. And what was the agreement? That they would stay with Israel and Paul would go to the Gentiles.

I John 4:2

"...confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh (then) is not of God:...." 
 
 
All right, now let's just jump ahead a little bit to show you what I'm talking about - in this same chapter, go over to verse 15. Chapter 4 verse 15. Now you've got to look at this with an open mind. Now I think I'm more patient than most people in my situation - but when people just refuse and refuse and refuse to open their eyes and read what the Book says, I get a little bit uptight. Because, after all, what's wrong with reading what the Bible says? But they don't want to do it because they want to follow tradition, and then they're out there on thin ice. 
 
 
I John 4:15 
 
"Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God." What's missing? Well, the work of the cross. Jump on over to chapter 5 verse 1. I can remember years ago before I had the understanding of Scripture that I have now, that already the Lord must have been working on my brain cells because way back, and the guy's gone on to be with the Lord (and some of my past pastors are still living so they'll know I'm not talking about them), but I'll never forget he preached a Sunday morning sermon on this verse. And I said afterwards, "Preacher we can't be saved on this verse." He said, "Oh yes we can, this is the Gospel." Well it is the Gospel of the Kingdom, but not the Gospel of Grace. Look what it says. 
 
 
I John 5:1 
 
"Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him." Not a word about the cross. So is John out in left field? No. John is exactly where he belongs because who is he writing to? Jews, who as yet have not been exposed to Paul's Gospel of Grace. He's on Jewish ground, as I've been saying for the last umpteen months since we started - actually Hebrews, but especially James and Peter and John, this is all written to Jewish believers who are saved simply by believing that Jesus was the Son of God, the Messiah of Israel.

All right, now let's just jump ahead a little bit to show you what I'm talking about - in this same chapter, go over to verse 15. Chapter 4 verse 15. Now you've got to look at this with an open mind. Now I think I'm more patient than most people in my situation - but when people just refuse and refuse and refuse to open their eyes and read what the Book says, I get a little bit uptight. Because, after all, what's wrong with reading what the Bible says? But they don't want to do it because they want to follow tradition, and then they

"And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name (now underline that word 'name') of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment." 
 
 
All right, now let's go back and see what I'm trying to show everybody as we go through these little Jewish epistles -- how that they ring true with so much of the Jewish Scriptures, and the first one would be Acts chapter 3. Peter and John have just healed the lame man and the Jews, of course, are wondering, "How did they do this?" Now, like I've always said, isn't it amazing -- this is only a matter of eight or nine weeks after Christ was performing miracles Himself; but yet when the disciples raised the lame man, they are just aghast. All right, but now verse 12, after Peter recognizes that they're all wondering up there in verse 11 and they're amazed. See the Jewishness of all this? Now this is shortly after the Day of Pentecost in chapter 2. 
 
 
Acts 3:12-15 
 
"And when Peter saw it (that is, the amazement of the Jewish people) he answered the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we made this man to walk? 13. The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, (see how Jewish this is?) hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. 14. But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 15. And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses." Peter doesn't come out and claim faith in His death, burial and resurrection for salvation, but in the next verse, what was the core of this man's faith that brought about the healing? 
 
Acts 3:16a 
 
"And his name, through faith in his name hath made this man strong,...." Now flip back again, if you're still there, to I John so that you can compare Scripture with Scripture. Now instead of Peter saying it, it's John, but nevertheless, it's still in that Jewish economy and here we have it in verse 23.

"And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name (now underline that word 'name') of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment."

"In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother." John is emphasizing the 'doing' part. Now that reminds me. Come back to Exodus chapter 19. This is what makes Bible study so interesting, when you see how everything fits. Now, everything pertaining to Israel once they get the Law here in Exodus, is legalism. It's works. Of course, it's always based on faith. Never leave faith out of the mix, but for Israel it was faith and works. And in order to get the full picture I have to go all the way up to verse 3. Israel has just come out of Egypt. They've crossed the Red Sea. And they're gathered around Mount Sinai. And we pick it up in verse 3: 
 
 
Exodus 19:3-4 
 
"So Moses went up unto God, (that is up on Mount Sinai) and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; (how many Gentiles in that? Not a one) 4. Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings and brought you unto myself." In other words, miraculously brought them out of Egypt, through the Red Sea and all the way over to Mount Sinai. 
 
 
Exodus 19:5-6 
 
"Now therefore, (since the nation is separated from Egypt) if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6. And ye shall be (in the future) unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak to the children of Israel." Now look at the next verse, verse 7. 
 
 
Exodus 19:7-8a 
 
"And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. 8. And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will (what?) do...." Well what is that? That's works. Whatever you want us to do to satisfy you, we'll do it. Foolish words, of course, but nevertheless, that was the whole idea. And so, under Law, it was faith plus doing the works, it wasn't just faith plus nothing, like we have today. All right, now, if you'll come back with me to I John again for a moment, and let's look at verse 10 again -- and for these Jews that John is writing to, this is right on. 
 
 
I John 3:10b

"And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin." Now you remember the word 'manifested' in Scripture, the best way I can explain it is just 'put up in a spotlight.' I always like to use the microscope -- the light under that slide, as soon as you turn it on everything that's on that slide is what? Manifested. Just brought right into view. All right, so it applies even here. Christ came in His first advent. He was just literally put on the spotlight of all of human history, to take away men's sins. Now we never want to forget that He came first and foremost to the Nation of Israel, but we'll be looking at that a little later. All right, and "In him (that is in Jesus of Nazareth) was no sin. Now verse 6. Consequently: 
 
 
I John 3:6a 
 
"Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not:...." Now that throws a curve at us, doesn't it? Because we certainly don't teach that we can reach a position of sinlessness. We all sin every day. But, I'm going to be showing that now, in these succeeding verses, that Divine nature that comes in as a result of our salvation cannot sin. It's Divine. And I'll show you how Paul deals with it as well. So don't let this throw a curve at you. Don't strike out on this. But we're talking about the Divine nature even for these Jewish believers, there had to be that born-again experience. 
 
 
Now you remember John's Gospel chapter 3 is where that term comes from, when Jesus was dealing with who? Nicodemus. And what did He tell Nicodemus? "Except you be born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of Heaven." So, even the Jewish believers that we're dealing with here, had to have that concept of a new birth. Now it's amazing that Paul never uses the term "born again." I guess you know that. But he certainly speaks of that "new life" as we identify with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. But he does not use the term "born again." So we have to look at these Jewish believers as having an understanding of that "new birth" as a result of their believing that Jesus was the Son of God, the Messiah of Israel.

I John 3:5

(as believers) Now again I always have to keep reminding people, these little epistles of James and Peter and John and Jude and on into Revelation are written primarily to what people? The Jews! The Nation of Israel. Now that doesn't mean that we just close it up and say, "Well this isn't for us," because all Scripture is profitable. 
 
 
Paul's epistles of course are written to us. And that's where we have to find our basic doctrines. But all the rest of Scripture still is applicable in one way or another. So even though John is addressing Jews here, you and I can revel in this just as much, that God has loved us so much: 
 
 
I John 3:1b 
 
"...that we should be called the sons (or the children) of God:...." Now you see Paul uses that same language. Paul says that "we're the children of God." That doesn't make it all in the same kettle, not by any means, they are still on two different platforms -- but, nevertheless, under the same God, and the Word of God is profitable. 
 
 
I John 3:1c 
 
"...therefore the world (around us) knoweth us not, because it knew him not." Now I'm sure that every one of you, if you really live and walk and practice your Christian life, once in a while will run up against somebody that thinks you're a little bit odd. They think you're out of it. There's something wrong with you! Well, don't be disheartened; it's always been that way from day one. In fact I'll probably go back to it sometime along in here, but just as soon as Abel was accepted of the Lord, how did Cain immediately begin to feel about him? Well, he hated him. Why? Because he was a righteous man and Cain wasn't. That's basically what it was. Well, it's the same way here. And you ought to see the letters we get about how when people in the Sunday School class realize that folks like you now have an understanding of Scripture that the quarterly hasn't even come close to -- they look down the row at them as though they've lost it, like they're out of their cage. But that's the way it's always been, and I'm sure many of you have experienced that. 
 
 
And the Lord Himself was detested by the religious leaders of the Nation, because it just rankled them. All right, so the world doesn't know who we really are, they don't understand us, but they didn't understand the Lord either. And they "knew him not." Now verse 2.

I John 3:1a

Now, just as surely as when John and Peter and James were writing these little Jewish epistles, Israel was in the land, the city of Jerusalem was their capital. The Temple was operating and the Roman Empire was the empire that was over them. And here, 2,000 years later, we have it again today. Israel, after the dispersion, is back in the land; they're back in the city. Oh, they haven't got the Temple yet, but hopefully they will get that once the Tribulation starts. The Roman Empire is now being revived with the ECU, as Daniel tells us it would, and so everything is now reset and ready for the fulfilling of those final years. So let's start at verse 19. 
 
 
I John 2:19 
 
"They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us." They turned their back much like in Hebrews chapter 6, "That they might be made manifest that they were not all of us." Now verse 20, and here we're picking up on new ground. 
 
 
I John 2:20 
 
"But (John writes) ye have an unction (or you have a directive) from the Holy One, and ye know all things." As God reveals it. And again the Apostle Paul makes the same point that it's our indwelling Holy Spirit who makes the difference. In fact, I guess I'd better go back and use the Scriptures. Come back with me to Romans chapter 7, and verses 4, 5, 6 -- these key verses that we need to compare with. 
 
 
Romans 7:4a 
 
"Wherefore, my brethren, ye also (Paul writes) are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; (by His crucifixion) that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead,...." Now Paul is always emphasizing the resurrection. It's not enough to believe that Christ died; it's not enough to believe that He was the Messiah; we have to believe that the Messiah, the Son of God, the Christ that died for our sins, rose from the dead. Otherwise Paul's Gospel of salvation is not complete. Now we see the reason we are saved is:

But for the most part we should be concerned with spiritual things first. 
 
 
There was a young lady who told me here just the other day, after just suddenly realizing, "You know, this life of 70 or 80 years is a blink of the eye compared to eternity. Just a blink of the eye." Well that's so true. And then they work and they labor and they connive -- I even think about the world leaders. Oh, they can almost lay their lives on the line. They let their health almost be ruined and yet, when their 70 or 75 years are up, where do they go? Off the scene. Unbelievable isn't it? And yet they act as though they're going to run it for eternity. No they're not. Just a little while.

I John 2:15

Now goodness, where does that ring a bell from? Well, go back with me to Matthew chapter 19 -- and every time I use this verse I have to remember a phone call several years ago where a lady called and said, "Les I'm totally confused." I said, "What's the matter?" She continued, "Well, yesterday morning my priest's subject was Matthew 19," (Matthew 19 verses 16 and 17, and that was his sermon.) And she said, "This morning on your program, you're telling us we're not under the Law and the Commandments; we're under Grace. Now I'm confused." 
 
 
Well now I didn't bring you back here to confuse you -- I brought you back here to see how this is exactly the same language that John uses in his little epistle as is used in the Four Gospels. All right, Jesus is speaking in Matthew 19. 
 
 
Matthew 19:16-17 
 
"And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17. And he (Jesus) said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: But, if thou wilt enter into life, (that is eternal life) keep the (what?) commandments." 
 
 
Keep the Commandments. That was His answer. All right, now come back to I John and the Spirit now inspires John to write (since we're dealing with believing Jews, not Gentiles), and he says, "If you really know the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, then you'll 'keep his commandments.'" Now I'll be the first to admit that he's not talking about just the Ten -- he's talking about all the ramifications of the Law. But it's still the Law that he's dealing with. Now verse 4. 
 
 
I John 2:4-5a 
 
"He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (well, that's basically what Jesus told the Jews of His own day) 5. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the (what?) the love of God perfected:...."

I John 2:3

Today, Israel is back in the land waiting for all these end-time things to take place. The Roman Empire is ready to make its appearance again in the nations of Western Europe and so everything that was in place here in the late 50's AD and early 60's AD is now in place once again. And so these letters were so appropriate for the Jewish believers, the Kingdom believers -- they know nothing of Paul's Gospel yet. They're Kingdom believers looking for the return of their Messiah. 
 
 
Now I emphasized that when we were introducing the little book of James, but never lose sight that the prophetic program is coming right straight through with no indication that it's going to be interrupted. And I pointed out in a past program the only hint we had is what the Lord Himself, the God of Creation, knew, and that was in Luke 4, when He stopped in the middle of the verse in Isaiah 61 verse 2. And He said, "this has been fulfilled in your ears." But remember He stopped in the middle of the verse and sat down. Because the rest of the verse made reference to the Tribulation, and the next verse made reference to the Kingdom. Age. But the Lord knew that that wasn't going to happen at that time, so He stopped. 
 
 
Peter, on the other hand, in the book of Acts, also uses an Old Testament prophecy and he tells the people, those Jews, on the day of Pentecost that what they're seeing is what was foretold in Joel. And he quotes the whole prophecy. "The sun and the moon turned into blood. And the great catastrophes associated with the Tribulation and then the Kingdom would come" So remember that these letters were written to Jewish believers in view of the soon-coming Tribulation and the Second Coming and the Kingdom, with no hint of the Age of Grace, or of Paul's Gospel of Grace. 
 
 
Now that doesn't mean that we don't take good things out of these Jewish epistles. Of course, there are many things because the God of the Jewish economy is the God of Grace, and so this whole Book all fits together -- but what's written to Israel is intrinsic to Israel. What's written by the Apostle Paul to the Church or to the Grace Age is intrinsically written for us. All right, so remember now this little Book is written to Jewish believers by the Apostle John. 
 
 
I John 2:1a 
 
"My little children,...." Now that's a term of endearment. And what is the main theme of John's writing back in the Gospel as well as in his letter -- what's the four-letter word? Love! John is the Apostle that is always epitomizing love. He must have been the kind of an individual that just had a soft heart. I don't think he was the blundering type that Peter was and that shows up so clearly in John 20. John is just a heart of love. And so this is a term of endearment that fits his personality, even though it's inspired by the Spirit. 
 
 
I John 2:1a 
 
"My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not...." Can't you hear the begging in his voice? Now Paul says much the same thing. Let's go back and look at how Paul puts it. Go back to Romans chapter 12, and verse 1. It's almost the same kind of language but, you see, Paul doesn't exude that softhearted love that John does, I don't think. Paul just comes right out and says it.

Today, Israel is back in the land waiting for all these end-time things to take place. II Peter 1:16a 
 
"For we have not followed cunningly devised fables,..." Now you know that's what the scoffer claims the Bible is. Well, how can anybody be so foolish when we know that this Book is so intricately put together. Intricately! It all fits. And then they try to tell us that it was all concocted around the campfires of antiquity and some of these foolish statements. But Peter hits the nail on the head. 
 
 
II Peter 1:16 
 
"For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty." 
 
 
Lest you think I've been stretching the envelope when I've been stressing all the time that these little epistles are looking forward to the coming of Christ again - now remember He's been crucified, He's ascended back to Glory - and, during these writings, we're in those years just after that. And so they know there are seven years of Tribulation that are ahead of them, and then He's going to return and yet set up the Kingdom, which we would call now the Second Coming. But turn with me to the little book of Jude. Only one chapter, verse 14. And I find it to be an interesting verse. Remember Jude is in the same category as Peter, James and John. And he writes: 
 
 
Jude 1:14 
 
"And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints," Well what was that? That's a reference to His Second Coming and it's what Peter is referring to that He's going to be coming with power and glory. 
 
 
All right, so that's what Peter is referring to as we read in verse 16. "For we've made known to you the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." They know that He's coming. Even though Peter has now realized that he probably won't live to see it because he's going to be martyred. But for these people to whom he's writing, they can still expect everything to happen in their lifetime. All right, reading on in verse 16:

In other words, Peter is talking to believers who have been less than spiritual and, of course, Paul deals with the same thing. And so Peter is admonishing these believers to shape up and realize that, without actually walking the Christian walk, it's awfully easy to fall back into those old habits. All right, verse 10. 
 
 
II Peter 1:10 
 
"Wherefore the rather, (or on the other hand) brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:" 
 
 
Now Peter is not ascribing their salvation to doing these good things. Let's go back and look at them. It was in the last program. Look at them in verses 5, 6, 7. These are the things he's talking about. Don't neglect these things because these are the manifestation of your saving faith. And Paul would say the same thing to us. 
 
 
II Peter 1:5-7 
 
"And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6. And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7. And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity." (or love.) See, all these things are part and parcel of the godly walk. Now let's just, again for sake of comparison, come back to how Paul puts it in Galatians. Galatians chapter 5 and this is when you can see that both of these men are writing by the inspiration of the same Holy Spirit. They're both writing Scripture. They're both admonishing believers. But, Paul is writing to us Gentiles in this Age of Grace, whereas Peter is still addressing Jews who are, as yet, unaware of Paul's Gospel of salvation, and they're still associated with Gospel of the Kingdom, Christ's earthly ministry, the believers of Pentecost of Acts chapter 2, and the Jewish economy in general. Here is how Paul addresses us in the Gentile Body of Christ. Let's jump in at verse 16. 
 
 
Galatians 5:16 
 
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, (in other words, walk in the control of the Holy Spirit) and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." You see, it's almost the exact language. Now verse 17.

II Peter 1:9

"But he that lacketh these things (in other words, all these good things that are part and parcel of godly living) is blind, (that is spiritually blind) and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins."
