"...to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting." And remember that, because of Saul of Tarsus' tremendous persecution, what happened to that Jerusalem congregation? They scattered for fear of their lives, and they took up residence in other parts of that part of the world, the Roman Empire. All right, turn again to I Peter, and the language is almost the same. 
 
 
I Peter 1:1 
 
"Peter an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia." So Peter was writing to "strangers that had been scattered." Not to the citizens of Rome and Athens, but to the strangers who were scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia and so on and so forth. Those are Jews who had been scared away from Jerusalem because of the awful persecution of Saul. All right, now then, when you come into II Peter the language doesn't change all that much. 
 
 
II Peter 1:1a 
 
"Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us..." Now, when and where did Peter attain his faith that Jesus was the promised Messiah? Way back there at Galilee when he was at his fishing nets and the Lord walked by and said, 'Follow me.' Well, Peter's faith began with Christ's earthly ministry. 
 
And the same way here - he's writing to those people who had been connected with Christ's earthly ministry (they, as yet, know nothing of Paul's Gospel of Grace. They are still under what we call the Kingdom economy). And you can just follow this on through into I John. I just thought of this on the way up, "How can I review this and make the point that these little epistles are still connected to the Jews of Christ's earthly ministry?" All right, so even I John chapter 1 verse 1, 
 
 
I John 1:1

James 1:1b

"Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you." we talked about that in the last lesson - that he's talking about the Tribulation. We'll see that in just a little bit. 
 
 
James 5:2 
 
"Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten." Now you may wonder what's meant by that? Well, I read in a book a while back that, in the ancient East, that was one way they collected wealth was beautiful fancy clothes and they'd put them in trunks. That was just like we'd put money in the bank. And it was a collecting of wealth. But, unless they were careful, just like now, moths could get in and destroy them. 
 
 
James 5:3 
 
"Your gold and silver (see, the accumulated wealth) is cankered; (in other words, it was materialism and it had nothing to do with their spiritual lives) and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. (in other words, their judgment is coming. Now see, he's not talking just to believers; he's talking to Jews who are really on both sides of the coin) Ye have heaped treasure together for (what?) the last days." Here we go again. The last days. Now verse 4. 
 
 
James 5:4a 
 
"Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by (what?) fraud,..." Enron back then already. It's nothing new. Oh, on a bigger scale now; greater technology. But the mentality hasn't changed one bit. 
 
 
James 5:4b 
 
"...crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped (in other words, are the victims of your fraud. All you retirees that suddenly have had everything wiped away - hey, it's nothing new.) are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth." Now that's another term for Christ that comes out of the Old Testament. 
 
 
James 5:5a 
 
"Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton;..." In other words, they just, as we would say, lived high on the hog. Nothing but the best. 
 
 
James 5:5b-6 
 
"...ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. 6. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you." Now, that goes both ways. God has not stopped, or, you could take the other way, the just people that they'd been misusing have not fought back. But this element of wealthy, Synagogue attending Jews (no doubt that James could write to and yet their lifestyle) was anything but righteous people.

Acts 8:1 
 
"And Saul was consenting unto his (Stephen's) death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles." Now the Twelve didn't leave because they were sure that the Messiah would be coming and they didn't want to be out of town when it happened. Remember they had been promised they would reign and rule over the Twelve tribes of Israel during the Kingdom Age. So they didn't scatter, but the rest of those Jewish believers scattered. Acts 11:19 makes it so clear that Gentiles were not involved in any of this. This is so simple. You don't have to be a seminary graduate to understand this. 
 
 
Acts 11:19 
 
"Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen.(which took place in Jerusalem) traveled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch. (in other words, that whole eastern end of the Mediterranean) preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only." 
 
 
We're talking about 10 years after the cross. That's what the Book says -- that these Jewish believers who were now scattered away from the home church in Jerusalem (which was headed up, of course, by Peter and the Twelve) are now being scattered throughout that end of the Roman Empire and they still have no consort with anybody but Jews. 
 
 
Now come back to James and let's stop with James chapter 1 verse 1, and this just says it all. Plain English. 
 
 
James 1:1 
 
"James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to (and I don't think we do any harm by putting 'writing' rather than 'to') the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting." Now isn't that plain? Now these Jews, of course, gathered in little congregations of Synagogues and they knew nothing of Paul's work of Grace. They're still in Judaism. All they've understood is that Jesus Christ of Nazareth was the Messiah and to a degree that He had risen from the dead and that He was still able to fulfill the covenant promises of the Kingdom. And so this is what they're looking for.

Acts 8:1

James 4:4 
 
"Ye adulterers and adulteresses,...." My, does that sound familiar? You know I said, when we began the study of James and Peter and John, that you're going to find a lot of likenesses with the Four Gospels and Jesus addressing the Jews in His earthly ministry. Well, here's one of them. Isn't this exactly what Jesus referred to with the Jews in their wickedness. 
 
 
James 4:4b 
 
"...know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is (what?) the enemy of God." 
 
 
Now let's see how, again, Paul puts it. We're going to be comparing back and forth because I think that's the best way to see the vast differences in what we call the doctrines of Paul for us as Gentiles believers - as over against what the writers in the little Jewish epistles are saying. Come back with me to Romans chapter 8 and we might as well start at verse 5. 
 
 
Romans 8:5-7 
 
"For they that are after the flesh (the Old Adam) do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit (in other words, they've become a believer and the Holy Spirit has now indwelt them, they mind) the things of the Spirit. (now here it comes) 6. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." The carnally or fleshly minded, just like James says, is enmity against God. The two will not coexist. You cannot have the enemy's attitude of the world as part and parcel of God. He'll have nothing of it. You know I think way back when I taught the Book of Romans, probably in chapter 8, I gave a little illustration. If you're living in a neighborhood of middle class people who have a half-way decent income and your neighbors are all in the same income level as you are and one of your neighbor's kids comes and he approaches you and says, "Hey, I'd like to have a new bike. Would you buy one for me?" Well, what are you going to say? "Well, you're not my kid! I don't have to buy you a bicycle. Go ask your parents. You're their responsibility, not mine." Would that be out of the way? Of course not. 
 
 
Well, you see, it's the same way with God. The unbelieving world thinks that they can come and treat God like some Santa Claus and beg for whatever they need and expect Him to answer. But no He won't! In fact, I think I'm on safe ground that God doesn't hear the requesting prayers of the unbeliever. His ears are totally deaf to that. Now, for salvation, of course, He's ready and willing to save to the uttermost. 
 
 
But see, the unbelieving world has got the idea that they can just sort of tweak God's nose

James 4:4

"And the tongue (the physical tongue) is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; it is set on fire of hell." The tongue is pretty much the beginning of a lot of wickedness, and James is emphasizing that. All right, in the next verse he speaks of everything in nature. 
 
 
James 3:7 
 
"For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:" Now you know what that tells you? I was just thinking about that on the way up here to our taping. I suppose Iris wonders why I'm so quiet, but I'm thinking, thinking, thinking. You know, I just thought of a little cliché in light of this very verse and I think it may come out of the evolutionists - that "the more things change, the more they stay the same." And isn't that true? 
 
 
Here we think, that in our modern era, this is the first time that people have been able to tame the wild animals and do all the various things. No. They've done it from time immemorial. And so, even James could write that, even at that time already, men were training all of these wild animals for their various circus acts or whatever you want to call it. See, men have always needed to be entertained. That's what the Coliseums were for, to keep people entertained. So everything is tamed. Now verse 8: 
 
 
James 3:8 
 
"But the tongue can no man tame; (no one can tame the tongue) it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison." Now again, I'd better stop right here and remind all of us that James is writing first and foremost, not exclusively, but first and foremost, to Jewish believers, who I feel had been scattered out of Jerusalem and the Jerusalem congregation, by virtue of Saul of Tarsus' persecution, as we see in Acts chapter 1. I don't think these are part and parcel of Paul's congregations whatsoever. I think these are strictly Jews. In fact, remember the last program? It wasn't the church where these Jewish believers were meeting, it was a Synagogue. And so there's no Church language in the letters of James and Peter and John - not a word. I went through it all again last night to make sure I was on solid ground when I say this. You cannot find one word of Church or what we call Church -- the Age of Grace -- language. In other words, there's no reference to the Body of Christ. There's no reference to the working and the controlling of the Holy Spirit - as over against the keeping of the Law - and it's 'legal.' It's like we're seeing here. It's not that the Spirit is going to control us, but that they have to go by what James is telling them. So, as you read these little Jewish epistles, remember there is no Grace-Age language in here. You also won't find the plan of salvation in these Jewish epistles.

James 3:6

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers (testings is a better word than) temptations;" Well now, what's the testing? The Tribulation. How in the world did these Jews take any joy in this coming Tribulation? Because of what's to follow! What's to follow? The King. The Kingdom! Remember, all of the Old Testament laid that out so clearly, that after the Tribulation would come the King and His Kingdom! 
 
 
Let's go back and let's look at one of the first instances. Matthew chapter 19 verse 27. Now this is Christ still in His earthly ministry, but toward the end of it now. And Peter is going to ask a pertinent question. I mean, these guys are just as human as we are, remember? 
 
 
Matthew 19:27 
 
"Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?" Now Peter's not talking about his Salvation; he knows he's got that. So what's he talking about? Reward. What are we going to get for having left our fishing and our families and all the good life on the Galilee? What's the reward? All right, and Jesus doesn't put him down. It was a valid question. All right, now here it comes. 
 
 
Matthew 19:28a 
 
"And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory,..." Regeneration. What's that referring to? When this old world will be made back like it was in the beginning. It's going to be regenerated. Now the best example I always give is your car battery. Leave your lights on. Get out there and it's dead as a door nail. What do you do? Well, you put a charger or a jumper cable on it and we regenerate it - and that old battery which was dead is brought back to its original condition. That's regeneration. 
 
All right, so this is what the Lord is telling the disciples. That before the Son of man can sit in the throne of His glory, the earth is going to have to be regenerated. Now, in order to pick up what that regeneration is going to amount to, come back with me now to Acts chapter 3, and again, never forget, all these statements are concerning the coming Tribulation, and the return of Christ, and the setting up of His Kingdom. All right, in Acts chapter 3, it's a follow up of the Pentecostal sermon in Acts chapter 2; and again Peter is appealing to the Nation of Israel to repent of having crucified their Messiah - and that, if they would, here was the promise.

"Whose voice then shook the earth: (well God was dealing from Mt. Sinai) but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. 27. And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain." Now, in my own mind (being the farmer that I am), I couldn't help but think of shaking and sifting grain. And whenever you sort grain with the sieve, the chaff and the junk falls through and the good remains. Well, I think you've got the same analogy here - that God's just going to shake things and that which is superfluous and is unimportant will disappear and only that which counts will remain. 
 
 
Now of course, we think Paul is probably making reference here, inspired by the Holy Spirit, to what Peter writes more in detail in his little epistle of II Peter chapter 3. Now you might want to turn over to that passage, and we'll start with verse 10 - and of course, this is way out into the future, but nevertheless, it's coming when God is going to judge this planet. 
 
 
II Peter 3:10-12 
 
"But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements (that is all the things that make up the planet) shall melt with fervent heat; the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11. Seeing then that all these things (that is the things of this earth) shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness. 12. Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?" But don't give up - don't despair, because that's not the end. Let's look at the next verse: 
 
 
II Peter 3:13 
 
"Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." Which of course is looking all the way past the 1,000 year Kingdom Age, which you and I as believers are going to be part of, and into eternity. So now if you'll come back to Hebrews 12 once again we know that God is going to deal harshly with this planet someday. And the day will even come, I feel, that it will be totally melted down and destroyed and made over for the eternal earth that's still coming. But be that as it may, now verse 28: 
 
 
Hebrews 12:28 
 
"Wherefore..." Seeing that the Creator God can do whatever He wants to do, and yet we are under His protective care --

Hebrews 12:23a 
 
"To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven,..." Which of course in Paul's language is a reference to those of us in the Body of Christ. 
 
 
Hebrews 12:23b 
 
"... which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all,..." Now we covered that at the close of the program - how that every believer will come before the Bema Seat to be judged for reward. 
 
 
Hebrews 12:23c 
 
"...and to the spirits of just men made perfect." I couldn't just pass that part up. We have to stop for this. Who are the spirits of just men made perfect? Well, let's go back to Romans chapter 3 so that we pick up the scriptural account of what Paul is talking about. I always like to drop down to verse 23 where we have, what shall I say, the culmination of everything that has been building in the first three chapters here in Romans - and that is the conclusion that mankind are sinners, with none excepted - Jew or Gentile, rich or poor, good or bad; it doesn't make any difference. 
 
 
Romans 3:23 
 
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" But it doesn't stop there. You move right into the next verse and here we have that glorious hope of salvation that is extended to every human being, none excepted - and that is that we are justified by His grace. 
 
 
Romans 3:24 
 
"Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:" Being justified by His grace, His unmerited favor! God didn't have to do this, but He did. And so now we are justified freely by His grace through the redemption, or the process of paying our sin debt, that is in Christ Jesus. Now verse 25. 
 
 
Romans 3:25 
 
"Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, (that shed, atoning blood of the cross) to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;"

Again, the whole Book of Hebrews is directed to Jews who were battling the spiritual warfare of coming out of Judaism with all of its law and demands and "works religion," and stepping into Paul's Gospel of Grace. Now, of course, Paul doesn't reveal himself because the Jews hated him, and so he wasn't about to show his card. But, nevertheless, we're convinced that Paul is the writer of this epistle. He uses several Pauline statements, as well as what Peter says in his little epistle "remember what the Apostle Paul has written unto you." And we know that Peter is addressing Jews so that sort of puts the frosting on the cake that Paul is writing to Jewish people who are fighting this battle of overcoming the draw back into Judaism. Consequently, all the way up through Hebrews (and I've been pointing it out whenever it comes along, that yes, the past in the Old Testament and Law and the Four Gospels was good, but) pure grace under Paul's teachings is so much better. So as we begin Paul is going to make a reference to Mt. Sinai in verse 18. 
 
 
Hebrews 12:18-19 
 
"For ye are not come unto the mount (that is, Mt. Sinai back there when God was on the mount. with thunder and fire and all of that) that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest. 19. And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word not be spoken to them any more:" In other words, the Law as I've said over and over even in the Four Gospel accounts, was what? Severe! The Law had no room for argument. If someone was taken in adultery, what did the Law demand? Instant death! No trial by jury and 15 years of appeals. The Law was severe. And here, too, when God came down on Mt. Sinai, it wasn't with love and mercy and grace. It was with power and might and it scared the Israelites to death. And then the warning was, "Don't even touch the mountain lest you die. Don't let an animal touch it. If he does you're to put him to death." So this is what we have to understand. 
 
 
Now it's interesting, as I've said before back in Romans and other areas where Paul writes, that he divides these things into groups of seven. Now there are seven visible things concerning Mt. Sinai, and I'm sure that Paul didn't sit down and think before he started - I think he probably dictated most of his letters. And I don't think Paul sat down and racked his brain and said, "Now, how can I put up seven points?" Now you know, a lot of preachers make a big deal over a three-point sermon. And that's all well and good. But my, they'll spend hours putting together a three-point sermon. I don't think Paul did that. Paul didn't have to sit back and say, "Well now, how can I put all this in groups of seven." I don't think it even entered his mind. But the Scripture says that he, like all other writers of Scripture, were moved by the Holy Spirit.

Again, the whole Book of Hebrews is directed to Jews who were battling the spiritual warfare of coming out of Judaism with all of its law and demands and "works religion," and stepping into Paul's Gospel of Grace. I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight. 5. And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him, 6. Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury the dead. 7. And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth." I'm always making mention of the fact that he must have had his eye on this place for quite a while that if, and when, somebody was going to die, that's where he wanted them buried, or even himself. And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure. 18. Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city." In other words, they deeded it to him and it was agreed in the presence of those Canaanites that it was a done deal.

"By faith Abraham, when he was tried, (or tested) offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son," Now let's go back and look at it. That's in Genesis chapter 22, because a lot of these little things I think the average reader or even student, overlook, and they're pertinent, they're important. Now we've already stressed in the earlier programs this afternoon that Abraham was fifty years waiting for the promised son. 
 
Of course, he and Sarah took things into their own hands, you remember, back when he was about 86 and they had Ishmael by way of the slave girl, Hagar. But see, God never recognized Ishmael as the promised son, because he wasn't. God had nothing to do with the birth of Ishmael. That was strictly in the flesh between Abraham and Sarah and the girl Hagar. But, the promised son wouldn't come for another fourteen years, which made a total then, as I said earlier, of about 50 years that Abraham was waiting for the son of promise, Isaac. 
 
 
All right, but now Isaac is a young lad himself. And now after waiting 50 years for the lad to be born, enjoying his companionship for 17-18 years, now God tells him what? "Give him up to Me, as a sacrifice." That must have been horrendous. But remember, God was doing it for only one purpose. And what was it? To test Abraham's faith. My, you wouldn't think God would have had to test Abraham anymore - he'd already been tested for 50-some years. But, nevertheless, God is going to test the faith of this man of faith, Abraham, once again. 
 
 
Genesis 22:1-2 
 
"And it came to pass after these things that God did tempt (or test) Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. (now look at verse 2. Watch this carefully.) 2. And he said, Take now thy son, thine (what's the next word?) only son Isaac whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; (present day Jerusalem) and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of." Goodness sakes, Ishmael is fourteen years older. But see, God never recognized Ishmael as a son. He was not the promised son, but rather the promised son was Isaac.

Hebrews 11:10a 
 
"For he..." Abraham - because of that Abrahamic Covenant. And I just put on the board the basics of the Abrahamic Covenant - and those of you who have heard me teach at seminars and so forth, this is almost a staple of my teaching format; that that Abrahamic Covenant in a nutshell, was that out of Abraham would come a nation of people. And one day God would move them into a strip of land that He had promised and deeded to Abraham. And then someday in the future, of course never setting dates, that someday in the future He would provide their government in the Person (Christ as) their King. 
 
 
And so all of the Old Testament then, from Genesis chapter 12 on up until the New Testament opens up, is looking forward to that coming promised King. As I mentioned in the last program, they became a nation of people when they were in Egypt in slavery. And maybe we should go look at the verse. Come all the way back to Genesis chapter 46, and let's start with verse 1. And of course, we're up to the time of Jacob, and his son Joseph is already down in Egypt. 
 
 
Genesis 46:1-3a 
 
"And Israel (the man Jacob) took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba, (which is down in the Negev or South of Jerusalem) and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. 2. And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I." 3. And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt;..." Now you remember in the last program we read where God told Isaac what? Don't go to Egypt. Sojourn in the land of promise and I will bless you. So it was a forbidden territory to go down into Egypt. But now you see, God in His Sovereignty, He can do this. Now He tells Jacob:

And again, it's just to show us that these Old Testament people walked and lived and were saved by faith even as we are. But, here's where we have to be careful. They didn't place their faith in a finished work of the cross; it hadn't happened yet. So what did they believe? What God said to them! It was God's Word to them. And we've already covered the pre-flood people. And Noah is a good example. 
 
 
God didn't tell Noah, "Now believe that I'm going to die on a Roman cross and be raised from the dead." No way. But what did God tell Noah? "There's going to be a flood. I'm going to destroy the human race. Build an Ark for the saving of yourself and your house." Now believing what God said, what did Noah do? He built the Ark. And so all the way up through the Old Testament it has always been by faith, but not in that finished work of the cross as we experience today (and what God tells us to believe through the Apostle Paul's writings), but rather in the Old Testament they believed what God told them in that day. 
 
 
All right, so now then as we come into verse 8, and like I said, I know we touched on it in the last part of our last program, but his great epitome of faith, the man, Abraham, who was steeped in idolatry down there in the lower end of the Euphrates River. Remember Joshua tells us his whole family was idol worshippers. The whole city was given over to idolatry, and yet God goes down, and I think person-to-person, like He did with Abraham more than once, confronted him. And God said, "Abram I want you to leave all this, I want you to get away from this pagan environment. I want you to get out of your pagan family and go to a place that I'll show you." He didn't tell him that it would be Canaan. He just said, "Go to a place that I will show you." And what'd Abraham do? He left. Why? Because he believed what God said, plus nothing. He wasn't circumcised. There was no Law to keep. He just simply obeyed what God said and God counted it to him for what? Righteousness. See? He didn't repent. He didn't grovel. He just simply believed God and God reckoned him a righteous man. Now verse 9. 
 
 
Hebrews 11:9a 
 
"By faith..." By faith; by just simply believing what God had said, now I can comprehend that it was probably easier for the man to believe something when he had seen God, Who I'm sure came down in human form, as He did in Genesis 18. I think you're all acquainted with that chapter. When the Lord and two angels came walking up the path and Abram ran to meet them, what did he do? Killed the fatted calf and they had a meal like you wouldn't believe. And they ate. That was the Lord Himself in what we call a theophany - God in human form. And that happened periodically in the time of the Patriarchs.

All right now then, let's continue our study in Chapter 11 - "the faith chapter." "But..." Now you have the flip-side! Yes, all that was as good as it could be, BUT it had now outworn its usefulness. Now we've got something 'far better,' as we've been seeing all through the Book of Hebrews.

"But Christ (after the priesthood of Melchizedek) being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, (now I'm reading this slowly) not made with hands,...." 
 
 
Well, if it's not made with hands, where is it? In heaven. In the heavenlies. There is a prototype and we showed that several weeks ago, that when Moses got instructions to build the tabernacle in the wilderness, what was it patterned after? The likeness of the one in heaven. Alright, and here it is again. That this Priest, Christ, the Priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with silver and gold and animal skins and linens and so forth. But with materials of the Heavenlies and only God knows what that is. 
 
 
My, aren't you getting kind of homesick for Heaven? I think every believer from the young ones to the old one should be - and you know what? We had to drop a television station a while back and we had kids that were eleven and twelve years old who called and cried, literally, bawled, because they were using our program every morning in their home schooling and wanted to know why in the world we had to drop the program? Well, I'll tell you that tears you up. But, on the other hand, it thrills us, that we do have a lot of kids listening and watching our program. 
 
 
A couple of years ago, Iris and I were just beside ourselves because a mother and two kids came to one of our seminars and the kids came up; one was 14, and one was 12, something like that. And they hugged us like long lost grandparents! And the poor mother was so embarrassed. And she said, "Well Les, you've got to remember, they watch you every morning." Well you know, that thrills our hearts that we're not just appealing to the 'gray hairs;' we do have a large audience of kids, eight, nine, ten - in fact we've got one family, now their kids are 17 and 18 and they've been with us for almost seven or eight years every morning. So you keep praying that we'll keep reaching a lot of these younger folks. 
 
 
But anyway, most of you understand that the tabernacle in the wilderness was made of earthly materials, but this tabernacle, this prototype, if I may call it that, is made in glory, with things that we can't comprehend. All I know is, it's glorious! It's going to be beyond human comprehension. Alright, so verse 11, finishing it. 
 
 
Hebrews 9:11b 
 
"...by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;" (creation). So it's not on this earth. Alright now verse 12, and here comes the whole meat or the substance of this portion of Scripture. 
 
 
Hebrews 9:12 
 
"Neither by the blood of goats and calves, (as we just saw in the previous verses in our last program) but by his own blood (the Blood of the Cross, on Calvary as the high priest entered behind the veil with the blood of an animal. This high Priest, Christ Jesus Himself) enters into the holy place, (in heaven. In other words into the presence of God the Father. Not with the blood of bulls and calves) having obtained eternal redemption for us."

50 3 4 Once, By His Own Blood: Hebrews 8:11 - 9:14

Hebrews 9:6a 
 
"Now when these things were thus ordained,..." 
 
 
That is by God Himself. The furnishings in the tabernacle, all the way from the brazen altar, the laver of cleansing, to the table of showbread, to the candlestick and the altar of incense. And then behind the veil was the Ark of the Covenant in which were the three things we just spoke of. Now continuing the verse: 
 
 
Hebrews 9:6b-7a 
 
"... the priests (the priests of Israel, all Levites remember) went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. 7. But into the second went the high priest alone, once every year,..." 
 
 
Let me come back to my diagram here on the chalk board. So daily, the priests would begin with the animal sacrifices out here at the brazen altar; they would stop at the laver of cleansing and wash and wash and wash. And then they would come on in and they would replace the loaves of bread on the table of showbread and they would trim the wicks and fill the oil and all that in the candlestick. They would trim the fires and everything on this altar of incense but never beyond the veil. And then they would accomplish their daily work and go back out. Now that's as far as they could go in their daily ministration, but once a year the priest could go behind the veil. 
 
 
We were just talking at break and I've never been able to discern from Scripture, did he come around the end of the veil? We know he didn't go under it, but somehow or other, once a year the high priest would come in behind the veil and sprinkle the blood upon the Mercy Seat and then go back out, get the blood of another animal; come back in for the sins of Israel and go back out. And only once a year on what we call the Day of Atonement. 
 
 
Remember the Day of Atonement could not take away Israel's sin. It was only a stopgap, it was a covering and that's why David said in the Psalms, "Blessed is the man whose sins are covered." They weren't atoned for completely; they couldn't be with animal's blood. I wasn't planning to do this - maybe I'd better do it again. So few people understand this whole concept of the departure of the Jewish believers or unbelievers as far as that goes in the Old Testament economy. And the Scripture is so plain that they went down into Hades or Sheol or Hell as we call it in the English. But Hades was divided by a great gulf, and on one side were the 'flames of torment' and on the other side was 'Paradise.' But it was all down in the center part of the earth. 
 
 
Now maybe we'd better chase down the Scriptures for this because it's been a long time since we've done this. Come back with me to Matthew chapter 12, and we'll begin at verse 38. Remember this in Christ's earthly ministry. 
 
 
Matthew 12:38-39 
 
"Then certain of the scribes and the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. (now you remember, the Jews were always requiring a sign. And His answers are in red if you have a red letter edition) 39. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; but shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:" 
 
 
If you ever have somebody scorn the story of Jonah, then you just tell them well, the Creator of the whole universe believed it. And if the Creator Himself believed it, you'd better! Because if you don't you're going to stand in danger of the judgment someday, because if you can't believe that, then you can't believe the work of the Cross. That's the way I look at it. Because one is just as believable as the other. And so here the Lord of Glory Himself is putting His stamp of affirmation on the story of Jonah.

50 3 3 Once, By His Own Blood: Hebrews 8:11 - 9:14

Hebrews 9:1-2a 
 
"Then verily the first covenant (again going back to the Mosaic) had also ordinances of divine service, (in other words, they had to go through the ritual prescribed) and a worldly (or an earthly) sanctuary. 2. For there was a tabernacle..." (a tent) 
 
 
Now I trust you all know that the word tabernacle is better translated in our English, as a tent. It was a temporary place that could be taken down, folded up and moved. It was not stone and brick and mortar like the temple which came later. But it was a temporary tent situation and so, consequently, it was called a tabernacle. 
 
 
Hebrews 9:2-3 
 
"For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. 3. And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;" In other words, all part of this same little tent. Now while we were waiting for the cameras to get ready, I just quickly drew a little makeshift illustration of what we're talking about. This isn't according to scale, but in the outer fence there was only a gate on the East. I'm using the typical directions of North, and East and South and West. This is the way the tabernacle was always set as was the temple on the Mount in Jerusalem. Alright, so as you came in from the East through the outer gate the very first thing that was in the furnishings was the brazen altar; the sacrifices. Then you came to the laver of cleansing, which was filled with water. And then you came to the first door of the tent, or the veil if you want to call it that, and this was called the sanctuary. This was the only place that the priests ministered every day of the year. 
 
 
And in this, we had the table of showbread with the twelve flat loaves of bread. Down here was the candlestick, the light for the sanctuary. And then right over here next to the veil was the altar of incense, which was still in here but close enough that the aroma of the incense covered the Ark of the Covenant, which was just behind the veil. And we're going to look in a minute how, specifically, God told Moses to place these. And then here was the veil that most Bible readers are acquainted with, the veil that rent when Christ died on that Cross. But it was the veil behind which only once a year the high priest could go and sprinkle the blood on the Mercy Seat, which was above the Ark of the Covenant. So this is basically the floor plan. 
 
 
Now the Temple was established years later on the same kind of a floor plan, only instead of being a temporary tent, it was made of all the materials that are part and parcel of a building. In other words, the mortar and the stone and the gold and the silver and all the rest of it. But, out in the wilderness, which Paul is dealing with here, it was just the little tent. Now verse 3. 
 
 
Hebrews 9:3-4 
 
"And after the second veil, (the back room of this little tent or of) the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; (or what we really refer to so often as the Holy of Holies.) 4. Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein (that is in the Ark - this little box made of wood and covered with pure gold) was the golden pot that had (a sample of the) manna (the food in the wilderness) and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;" (or the Ten Commandments.) 
 
 
Let's go back to Exodus chapter 40. And the children of Israel are now ready to set up the tabernacle. The last year has been spent getting everything ready. Craftsmen of every sort were commissioned to do the work and they must have been brilliant - to take pure gold and overlay these articles of wood, out of which everything was tremendously beautiful. Verse 19.
