"But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets:" So everything is a progressive revelation and Hebrews is one of those sections of Scripture that, even though it's not directly addressed to the Gentile body of Christ, it shows us the fundamental truths that were so necessary for our Gospel to come about. We also find that in all of Hebrews there is this constant comparison of that which was good (was in the past), to that which is better (is now). In fact, back up to verse 6 - what's the first two words? 
 
 
Hebrews 8:6a 
 
"But now..." In other words, that which was past is past but now, see? 
 
 
Hebrews 8:6b 
 
"...hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, (see, that constant comparison and ) by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, (Better than that which was before, the old covenant) which was established upon better promises." I really love this! Yes, the Law was good. Judaism was good as far as it went, but now, that has faded off and folded up like an old garment and now we've got things that are far better. Now verse 7. 
 
Hebrews 8:7 
 
"For if (conditional) that first covenant (the Covenant of Law) had been faultless, (if it had been perfect) then (there) should be no place have been sought for a second." That stands to reason doesn't it? Again, "If it ain't broke - don't fix it." It's only when something is amiss that we dive into it and make corrections. So Paul says: "if the first had been perfect, there'd be no need to correct it." But it wasn't. It was fleshly and weak. 
 
 
Hebrews 8:8 
 
"For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold the days come, saith the Lord, when I will (future) make a new (better) covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:" Now that's not addressed to the Church. The new covenant, even in Jeremiah (we're going to look at it after a bit), was never addressed to the Gentile Church; it was addressed to Israel and we'll look at that. Oh if only people could separate Israel and the Church, how the Scriptures would just open up to them.

"For every high priest (whether it was of the Aaronic or whether it's this high priest, Melchisedec) is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer." He has to have a reason for fulfilling His priesthood. Now verse 4. 
 
 
Hebrews 8:4 
 
"For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:" He couldn't do that. See that? He couldn't operate in His priesthood if He had to do as Israel's priests did because it just wouldn't fit. He could not offer animal sacrifices. He could not fulfill the priesthood in the temple because His work was so totally, totally above and beyond the animal sacrifices of Judaism. Now verse 5. 
 
 
Hebrews 8:5a 
 
"(these priests of Israel, Judaism) Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle:..." The tabernacle at Mt. Sinai, in the wilderness. In other words, God is making sure that Moses builds that tabernacle according to the floor plan of the original, which is in Heaven. We looked at it in the last moments of our last program and we're going to look at it again in a moment. Now finishing verse 5. 
 
 
Hebrews 8:5b 
 
"for, See, (take note) saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount." As Moses is about to build that tabernacle at Mt. Sinai, in the wilderness, the Lord spoke and said, "See, (take note) that thou make all things according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount." 
 
 
Now let's go back again for just a quick review of where we were in the last program, but a different verse. Let's go to Exodus chapter 25 and verse 40. In the last program we looked at verses 8 and 9, but now we're going to look at the last verse. And this just shows the importance of it. Moses could not take this lightly. He couldn't just throw up a tent and build and altar and start killing animals. It all had to be according to God's divine purposes. And those of you who have studied the tabernacle with me remember that everything, with nothing excepted, was all a picture of this work of the Cross. 
 
 
Every instrument in the sanctuary. Every bolt of cloth, every piece of gold and silver, it all spoke of the coming of the work of the Cross. So this is why God was so adamant that Moses did everything in a particular way. Now verse 40, and God is giving Moses instructions:

Hebrews 7:25 
 
"Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him. (in other words, by believing that finished work of the Cross) seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." 
 
 
Now I didn't really get time to comment on that last part of the verse. But it's just simply to tell us that God will never stop being all that we need. Even when we get to that eternal state when there's no longer the necessity for interceding for us as we struggle through this life. Yet, the confidence that we have is that this relationship with our great high priest will never end. It is forever and ever and ever. 
 
 
Now then, we can go into verse 26. 
 
 
Hebrews 7:26 
 
"For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;" 
 
 
Now if you'll just analyze that for a moment, could any of that apply to a priest of Levi? No. No human can measure up to this. This was something that only Christ Himself could fulfill. And that's the kind of a high priest we have. He is harmless, undefiled, totally separated from sinners. He didn't have that old sin nature that we're born with. He was always God. And of course, "...made higher than the heavens." Now then, verse 27. 
 
 
Hebrews 7:27a 
 
"Who needeth not daily, as those high priests,..." 
 
 
See how this is constantly showing us that he's talking to Jews. And they knew the role of the priesthood in Judaism. The ordinary priest who went in the daily ministrations of the sanctuary from the altar out there at the gate and then stopped at the laver of cleansing. And then into the little front room of the sanctuary wherein there was the table of showbread that had to be changed every day. And the candleholder that had to be trimmed and filled with oil every day. The altar of incense, that had to be kept burning with incense. And that was their routine day in and day out from the human element. And, of course, when they died someone else would have to take their place. Alright, but every day they would have to go through the ritual of this maintaining the temple worship. 
 
 
Hebrews 7:27b 
 
"...to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, (because they too were sinners, even though they were priests.) and then for the people's.(the Nation of Israel. But Christ didn't have to do this) for this he did once, when he offered up himself." 
 
 
Now I've always stressed when I teach Hebrews, look for the number of times where it tells us that Christ did these things "once." Once for all, as the old hymn put it. So "for this he did once, when he offered up himself." And we're going to see in another chapter where the blood of animals, bulls and goats couldn't do it but His singular sacrifice finished everything. Verse 28.

"Wherefore..." 
 
 
Now remember whenever Paul uses that word wherefore, what does it do? Sends you back to what he's just got through saying and he's just been telling us that this man, the Man Christ Jesus, God the Son Who had finished the work of salvation in His death, burial and resurrection. This Man, in verse 24, has an unchangeable priesthood. He's immutable. He never changes. Just because He took on flesh, suffered and died doesn't mean that He never stopped being the Eternal Sovereign Creator God of the universe. 
 
 
Hebrews 7:25 
 
"Wherefore he (this Son) is able also to save them to the uttermost (in other words completely, not just partially) that come unto God by him,..." 
 
 
Not some other way. John's Gospel tells us that if they try to come in some other way, they are what? They are a thief and a robber, and so there is only this one way. 
 
 
Now we're living in a time where that doesn't go down easy. I'll probably get kicked off television someday for standing on this premise, that it's an exclusive Gospel that saves us. It is not just one of many. The scripture is adamant that there is no other name given among men, whereby we must be saved. And the scripture is also adamant that this is the only way that God will accept mankind and so here we have it. Because of Who this Man Christ Jesus was with a priesthood after the order of Melchisedec. Because of Who He is, "He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God by Him or through Him, and the reason being: 
 
 
Hebrews 7:25b 
 
"...seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." 
 
 
He ever liveth for all eternity, from past to future. Consequently He can make intercession or be the constant comfort for them who have placed their faith in His death, burial, and resurrection for salvation. 
 
 
Now I'm going to take the time, because I get so many phone calls, over and over, asking "Well, how do I experience this salvation that you're talking about?" I always feel as though I make it plain, but evidently I'm not making it plain enough for a lot of people. And so again we're going to stop for a few moments and just show how to enter in to this great salvation that is completed at the moment that we're saved by believing. We're not just partially saved, but we have to do it God's way. Not some denomination's idea. Not my idea, but God's way. And the best way is to just go back and search the scriptures.

These Hebrew people (like the Jerusalem church - and I don't think this was written to the Jerusalem church but another one like it) and these other Jewish congregations that were scattered throughout the Roman Empire had embraced Jesus as their Messiah. They had grasped that much, but they were still keeping the Law. They were still hanging on to so many of the tenets of Judaism and that's so obvious as you saw in the study of Acts that's been on the daily program. How that Peter had said: 
 
 
Acts 10:14 
 
"But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean." Why not? Because he was a good law-keeping Jew. And when he got to the house of Cornelius he hedged and he said: 
 
 
Acts 10:28a 
 
"And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation;..." 
 
 
 
Well, why? That was all part of Judaism. And then when you get on over to Acts chapter 22 and Paul is rehearsing his conversion on the road to Damascus, Paul makes the statement: 
 
 
Acts 22:12 
 
"And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there." Well you see, none of those believers in Jesus as the Messiah, had yet severed themselves from that part of Judaism, which was Law-keeping. 
 
And so, what the whole book of Hebrews is really all about is to convince these Jewish believers now, to move away. Cut the apron strings to Judaism, not to just throw it away as trash, no way. It's the very foundation of everything that has come on up through even into Paul's apostleship, but nevertheless, they were to cut the strings to the legalism of Judaism and step into the Gospel of Grace. 
 
 
Consequently then, we've been looking at the priesthood of Melchisedec, who was not a priest of Israel. He was not after the order of Aaron and the tribe of Levi but rather he was a high priest of the Most High God, you remember, which we stressed was the term for God of the whole human race and not just Israel. And so now we come to this whole idea that the Law has to be put behind them - and then step out into Grace. Alright, let's start in verse 19 then for this afternoon

Now, I realize that sometimes this is kind of scary. But if you're a believer, this doesn't have to scare you one bit, because as we pointed out in our last program, there's a big difference between backsliding or failing as a believer, and being an apostate. We're going to look at that word more in depth this next half-hour. Maybe it would be better if we start up there again at verse 4. 
 
 
Hebrews 6:4a & 6a 
 
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened,... 6. If they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance." 
 
 
But now remember, we've been looking at everything in between in the last couple of lessons. These folks can have this kind of knowledge. They can have the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit and they certainly understood a lot of Old Testament truths. Remember we're talking about Jews who are hanging on to Judaism. And so let's just start at verse 4 again. 
 
 
Hebrews 6:4-5 
 
"For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, (remember watch the language. They didn't ingest it they merely tasted) they were made partakers of the Holy Ghost. (they didn't actually have the Holy Spirit they merely brought Him along side) 5. And have tasted the good word of God, (oh they knew about Christ's earthly ministry, and they knew all the Old Testament promises) and the powers of the world to come," 
 
 
We covered that in the closing moments of our last program, how that they understood this coming Kingdom and all the glories of it. 
 
 
Hebrews 4:6a 
 
"If (scary word isn't it?) they (these people who had this much understanding) shall fall away..." 
 
 
We're going to stop right there. This word that is translated "fall away" and I put it on the board ahead of time, in the Greek is 'parapipto.' Now I'm not a Greek scholar and you don't have to be, but here's one instance where it pays to see the difference. This word is the only time it's used in the whole New Testament. Where it's translated in verse 6 that "if they shall fall away," it is a "parapipto," whereas the other word that we're most familiar with like in II Thessalonians chapter 2 that "unless there is a falling away first" -- that term is "apostasia" and it, too, is translated "falling away." But it does not have the connotation that this one does.

Now, I realize that sometimes this is kind of scary. I always like to point out that secular archaeology proves these events. You know, Christ was crucified in about 29 AD. Paul begins his ministry, I always maintain around 40 AD. And so here you have these Jews who had come out of Christ's earthly ministry still under the Law. Remember I am always emphasizing that during Christ's earthly ministry they were still keeping the Jewish Law. They had Saturday Synagogue, they kept their food kosher. I mean everything was still under the Law. 
 
 
Then, of course, when we come into Paul's ministry, the first thing that Paul makes so plain is "you're not under the Law, you're under Grace!" But you see, like the Book of Hebrews is telling us, a lot of these Jews had not yet made the break from Judaism and embraced Jesus as the Messiah - putting that behind them and moving into Paul's doctrines of Grace. Faith plus nothing, as we see in I Corinthians 15:1-4. 
 
 
Alright, secular archaeology has pretty much proven that there were Jews up until about the end of the first century, who were showing in their potsherds, the clay particles that archaeologists find, that in the same little piece of clay, there would be a symbol of the menorah -- the seven candled candle stick, and the fish. You know, the mark of Jesus of Nazareth, or Christianity, later on. 
 
 
Now what does that show you? That these Jews were still practicing both sides. They were still involved in the legalism of Judaism but they also had embraced Jesus of Nazareth. And for that reason, of course, they had been scattered out of Jerusalem because of Paul's persecution. And so one of the cities of the Decapolis, I think, was Pella. And that's probably where a lot of those Jerusalem Jews fled to - the area of Pella up there just east of Galilee that the archaeologists have found so much evidence of just this very thing. That they must have been practicing both aspects. They had Judaism and yet they were followers of Jesus of Nazareth. 
 
 
See, this is what Paul is dealing with and I think it was to a congregation maybe in a city like Pella that the Book of Hebrews was written. We don't know, but that's just my own idea. He has now been telling them that they've got to grow up spiritually. They've got to get off the milk-bottle of the simple things and get on into the deeper things of Paul's revelations of the mysteries and what we call the Age of Grace. But, oh, they were having a problem. 
 
 
And that's understandable because we run into it all the time where people may come out of a cult, or what we certainly feel is a totally false religion and it's a struggle. It is a struggle to just simply cut the ties of that old religion and step out here in Grace. Like a gentleman called me again just the other day. And he said, "Les it must be part of the human nature to want to do something." And I said, "That's what I'm always saying." 
 
 
Remember, human nature says, "I've got to do something," and that appeals to people. And when I come along and say, you step out by faith and faith alone. Well, it's just like telling somebody to step out in the street without any clothes on. And I've used that analogy because you do, you step out naked before God. With nothing else to enhance eternal life. It's Faith plus Nothing! Alright so now then, Paul is saying: 
 
 
Hebrews 6:1-2 
 
"Therefore, leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2. Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment."

"...when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;" Which indicated when He sat down that the work was finished. And never forget that. That twice in God's dealings throughout the human history, He finished a work that was so perfect that He could sit down. The first one of course, was the work of Creation. Then the last verse of chapter 1 said, "and He saw that it was (what?) very good." It was perfect and then you get into chapter 2, it doesn't say He sat down but it says "He rested." And I make the point that if you're tired and you've had a long day what do you do to rest? Well, you sit down, and take a load off, as we say. And so God rested. 
 
 
The work of the Cross is the same way. It was so perfect, there was not a flaw in that work. There was nothing that needed yet to be done. And so when He had purged our sins, He sat down. It was finished. And you know, ever since, what has mankind been trying to do? Add to it! One thing or another, adding to it. And, I think God is almost beside Himself that mankind cannot accept the fact that it was a finished work. Now let's begin with verse 10. 
 
 
Hebrews 5:10 
 
"Called of God an high priest (not after the order of Aaron but) after the order of Melchizedek." Who, remember, was the high priest of the Most High God, which was the definition of God concerning the non-Jewish world. Now we'll move down into verse 11 and we're going to again depart from the priesthood of Melchizedek for a little bit and we're going to come down into the life of the ordinary believer. The ordinary Hebrew in this case, but we're no different. 
 
 
Hebrews 5:11 
 
"Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing you are dull of hearing." What is Paul referring to? It was hard for him to talk to them about the priesthood of Christ and after His finished work. Why? Because they were so thick-headed. They just couldn't get it through their heads. And so he says, "You are dull of hearing." Now verse 12, why were they dull of hearing? Well it was a malaise, I think - it was just no real interest. In fact, I think, I can safely say, anyone of you, I don't care what church you go to, it's no different denomination by denomination. Large churches or small. How many of your fellow-church people have a hunger for the Word of God? How many of them can honestly say, I just can't wait until I can get into another Bible study.

49 1 4 Through the Bible with Les Feldick  Thou Art My Only Begotten Son: Hebrews 5:1-14

Hebrews 5:5 
 
"So also Christ glorified not himself to be made a high priest but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee." 
 
 
Now we're going to go back once again where we were earlier in Psalms chapter 2 because in case someone missed the last program we want you to understand what Paul is referring to. That God the Father designated to God the Son that He should be a high priest but not in the lineage of Aaron, the humanly priesthood, but it's going to be the priesthood according to Melchizedek and we'll see that a little later in this half-hour. 
 
 
Psalms 2:7 
 
"I will declare the decree: the LORD (here of course, the Lord is a reference to God the Father) hath said unto me, (the Son) thou art my Son; (and remember it's capitalized so we're speaking here of Christ way back - 1000 BC.) this day have I begotten thee." 
 
 
Now let's turn all the way up to Acts chapter 13 and find out what that meant when God said "this day I have begotten thee." I pointed out, I think, in the last program, David wrote the Psalms around 1000 BC but that's not when Christ became the only begotten Son of God - but prophecy-wise, that was when it was spoken. But in Acts chapter 13, we have the Scriptural definition of what it meant to be the only begotten Son of God.

Hebrews 5:5

"So also Christ glorified not himself to be made a high priest but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee."


Now we're going to go back once again where we were earlier in Psalms chapter 2 because in case someone missed the last program we want you to understand what Paul is referring to. That God the Father designated to God the Son that He should be a high priest but not in the lineage of Aaron, the humanly priesthood, but it's going to be the priesthood according to Melchizedek and we'll see that a little later in this half-hour.


Psalms 2:7

"I will declare the decree: the LORD (here of course, the Lord is a reference to God the Father) hath said unto me, (the Son) thou art my Son; (and remember it's capitalized so we're speaking here of Christ way back - 1000 BC.) this day have I begotten thee." 


Now let's turn all the way up to Acts chapter 13 and find out what that meant when God said "this day I have begotten thee." I pointed out,

Hebrews 4:14a 
 
"Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens,..." 
 
 
And remember, going back to chapter 1, that when He passed into the heavens having purged our sins, He what? He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on High. 
 
 
Hebrews 1:3b 
 
"...when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;" 
 
 
And you remember I made the point that when He sat down, what did it indicate? That it was finished. Right. Oh, that the finished work of cross took care of everything. There wasn't another iota that could be added to it. And consequently, He could rest and be aware that it was totally finished. So here again: 
 
 
Hebrews 4:14-15b 
 
"...we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." 
 
 
And on the other hand He can be touched with the feeling of our infirmities because He was in all points tempted or tested like as we are, yet without, or apart from sin. In other words, even the thought of yielding to temptation never entered His mind. 
 
 
Now the three categories of temptations that cover every possible scenario of the human experience can be found in the little book of I John chapter 2. Now we did this way back when poor old Eve was caught in temptations in Genesis chapter 3. We probably used it when we covered the temptations in our study of Matthew, but it never hurts to repeat some of these things. But first let's look in I John chapter 2 beginning in verse 15. 
 
 
I John 2:15-16 
 
"Love not the world, (in other words this world system) neither the things that are in the world.(or materialism). If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (now here's the world) 16. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world."

Hebrews 4:14a

"Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens,..." 


And remember, going back to chapter 1, that when He passed into the heavens having purged our sins, He what? He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on High.


Hebrews 1:3b

And you remember I made the point that when He sat down, what did it indicate? That it was finished. Right. Oh, that the finished work of cross took care of everything. That, until you turn that little powerful light on to beam up through the object that you are looking at, you don't see anything. But once that light manifests everything that's on that little glass slide, it's made available for you to see. Alright, now that's the way the Word of God is. It just simply puts God's powerful spotlight on everything, and so he says:

Now, never forget that Paul is constantly referring in the book of Hebrews to the living God. We aren't worshiping some idol of wood or stone. We're not worshiping some man-concocted idea, but we are literally aware of, and worshiping, and are saved by, a living creator God. 
 
Alright, now I think I'm going to let the Scripture speak for itself, and periodically, in my own time, I just love to go back and read Psalm 139. Let's go back and look at it in this light. How that God sees everything, the unimportant, the mundane, as well as the headline grabbing events of mankind. Nothing escapes His manifestations. Here in Psalms 139, David just puts it so beautifully and like I said, I'm going to let the Word of God speak for itself. In fact, I had a Jehovah's Witness listener and they qualified themselves as a Jehovah's Witness and this is what they said. "I so enjoy your reading program." Well it kind of made us smile for a moment and I thought yes, that's what I do most of the time. I read and let the Word speak for itself. And I had another letter again just yesterday that asked us to never stop putting the Scripture on the screen. This is the only Bible that a lot of people will ever read. And so this is why we put the Scriptures up as much as we do. As we begin with verse 1 of Psalms 139 we'll just let the Spirit lead to see how far we want to go. 
 
 
Psalm 139:1 
 
"O Lord, thou hast searched me, and (what's the next word?) known me."

I've made a habit now of checking the Daily Oklahoman and I can honestly say that there is not a day that the little Nation of Israel is not in the News. That should precipitate some common sense questioning. Why? Why, one little nation of only five million people constantly in the world's spotlight? Well, you see, it just again goes back to prove that this is the only Book on earth (and I never attack other religions. I still don't have to, as all I have to do is stand on this one.) No other Book on earth was able to tell things hundreds of years in advance and with what we're seeing in the Middle East 3,500 years in advance. No human intellect could have ever done that. But it's only because it is the supernatural Word of God. 
 
 
We're not going to have time to look at all of these but I just checked it again the other evening. King Josiah, one of the Kings of ancient Israel, was named three hundred years before he was born. King Cyrus of the Medes and the Persians was named and designated as the one who would make the decree to send the Jews back to rebuild the city of Jerusalem, one hundred years before he was born. And so all the way through Scripture we have these things that designate it as a supernaturally inspired Book. 
 
 
Now I said the Bible foretells 3500 years in advance, so let's start over in the Book of Deuteronomy in chapter 30 and this is the reason why we have the Middle East the way it is. Now remember, this was written by Moses 1,500 years before Christ. That's 3,500 years back from today, and look what he wrote. 
 
 
Deuteronomy 30:1 
 
"And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, (now remember Moses wrote to the children of Israel) the blessings and the curse, which I have set before thee, (Now watch this.) and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee," 
 
 
Now what does that tell you? That at some point future from Moses' time and back from our time, the Jews would be scattered into every sovereign nation on earth. None excepted, and they were, and many are still in those nations, but many have returned to the little Nation of Israel. Alright, now look at the next verse. After they've been scattered to every nation under heaven. 
 
 
Deuteronomy 30:2 
 
"And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul." 
 
 
Now in order to define that a little closer, I usually like to jump up to Ezekiel chapter 37 and most of you are acquainted with that as the chapter of the dry bones. Ezekiel saw the vision and he saw symbolically the Jews scattered out into the nations of the world. Out of the land of blessing. Separated from their Temple, without a priesthood, without a sacrifice. And it was just as if they were dead people, and spiritually, of course, they were.

Hebrews 4:4-5 
 
"For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest (and that's the word we're really looking at. God rested) the seventh day from all his works. 5. And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest." 
 
 
Now this whole idea of rest then is laying on us the simple fact that if something is complete and there is nothing more that man can do, God himself has said "It's very good," then what are we to do? Rest. Now if you're resting, and I'll just use a simple childlike illustration. If you buy a ticket from Tulsa to New York and you go and take your seat and the plane no more than takes off and makes its curve and probably heading back toward the east, immediately, as soon as you're able, you jump up out of your seat, you run forward and you may even be able to get as far as the pilot's cabin, you say "Are you really going the right direction?" 
 
 
Now we'd say that's ridiculous. That pilot knows where he's going. But listen, not half as ridiculous as when we doubt God. But you see this is exactly what people do. They make a profession of salvation, they may go through a prescribed ritual, and there's no peace, there's no assurance of salvation. So what do they do? They're constantly running here, running there, trying to find the answers to their dilemma. I mean, we have it happen all the time. And then all of a sudden, they enter into this saving Grace of God where they suddenly realize they can do nothing but believe it and then what can they do? Rest. Just like the airline passenger that can sit back in his seat, relax, start reading something and forget all about the responsibilities of where that pilot is going. Because they have total faith in the plane and the system. 
 
 
Well, that's what we have to do with our salvation. God has said it's finished and we don't have to sweat and work and try to do this and do that. We just rest in it. Now that doesn't mean we don't work. I'm talking about the salvation experience. And see that's why Canaan became such a beautiful picture of the whole scenario. Rest was rejected because of unbelief but on the other hand a picture of what rest really can be for the believer. Oh, we can just revel in the fact that we don't have to work, work, work, work for salvation, as that's all been done. It's finished.

Hebrews 4:4-5

"Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, Today if ye will hear his voice. 8. Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: 9. When your fathers (now remember, Paul is writing to Hebrews so he's referring all the way back to the forefathers of Israel) tempted (or tested is a better word) me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not know my ways. 11. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) (Now we have to take the next verse to pick up God's number one controversy with the human race as well as Israel, as I pointed out in the last program, so he says) 12. Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief,..." 
 
 
Now he doesn't mention any of the other sins of the flesh, but rather unbelief! Oh that's what God hates more than anything, is a lack of faith. So looking at that last verse again: 
 
 
Hebrews 3:12 
 
"Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, (and when there is no faith, then it's an easy step to do what?) in departing from the living God." 
 
 
You've heard me say it on the program over the last several years, as you come back to Exodus chapter 23, "What is America's number one problem?" It's not politics, or economics, but rather it's spiritual. We've lost our faith! As a nation of people we no longer have any respect for the absolutes of this Book, and we're suffering the consequences. Restore America back to the faith of our fathers, and most of our problems will disappear. But they will not because they will not believe what God says. Well here is the lesson for us now from Israel's experience going into the Promised Land.

Hebrews 3:2a 
 
"How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;..." 
 
 
It isn't that Salvation isn't there. I mentioned it so often in John chapter 10, the chapter on the good shepherd - where is the door of the sheepfold? Right at ground level. Not up on some high cliff or across some raging river, but rather it's right at ground level, and in front of every lost person throughout their life. All they have to do is step in by faith, but they neglect to do that. Alright, let's just use a couple of Scripture verses to point that out. 
 
 
Hebrews 3:2a 
 
"How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;..." 
 
 
Alright we'll stop right there and come back to Matthew chapter 22, where the same Greek word, in a little bit different form, nevertheless it's the same Greek root word here in this chapter, and let's look at verses 1-5. But in order to get the real meaning of the verse, I guess we should go to the beginning of the parable, because this is the Lord Jesus speaking during His earthly ministry, and remember these parables again were directed primarily to the Jewish people, and the Pharisees in particular. In fact while you're in this chapter just go back a chapter to 21:45, because I always like to use this verse to explain to people what I mean when I say, that everything Jesus said, was said to Jews under the Law. So let's look at that passage first. 
 
 
Matthew 21:45 
 
"And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them." 
 
 
Do you see how plain that is? They understood that all His parables were directed to them, because they were the ones that were so guilty. Now you come into chapter 22, He gives another parable. 
 
 
Matthew 22:1 
 
"And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, (So who do you think He's directing it to? Well the chief priest and the Pharisees) 2. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, 3. And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. 4. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. 5. But they made light of it, (they neglected it, they didn't pay any attention. They neglected their invitation to the wedding feast. So in their neglecting it, what was their response?) and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise;" 
 
 
But instead of responding to the invitation they neglected paying any attention to that invitation to the marriage feast. Now I think I've got another one in chapter 23, at least I hope that's the one I want. Here the Lord Jesus, and you've all seen pictures of it on somebody's wall, where He's looking out over Jerusalem. And it is a thought provoking picture, no doubt about it. But this is what He's saying:

For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; 3. How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; 4. God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will." 
 
 
Now all of those verses are tied around that one concept, "How dare we neglect so great a Salvation." Now let's go up to verse 1 and begin. And look at the very first word, "Therefore." Remember when we taught Romans several years ago whenever we came to a "Therefore, what would I tell you? What's it there for! Well, because of what went before. Here, he's referring to what we just covered in chapter 1, and some of that was: 
 
 
"If the Son is higher than the angels, if the Son was the Creator of everything, if the Son finished the work of redemption, and purchased man's sins, and was now qualified to sit down at the right hand of the Father on high, but not forever, there would come a day when He would arise and return, and set up His Kingdom here on the earth. But before He would set up the Kingdom, He would destroy His enemies." 
 
 
Now the study we had in II Thessalonians should still be fresh on your mind. How that the day of the Lord is coming, and the wrath and vexation that is going to be poured out on Christ-rejecting mankind, and that's all the same concept of what Psalm 110:1 spoke of as having His enemies under His feet. Now with all that as a backdrop, that God the Son, the Creator, the Redeemer, the Intercessor, sitting at the Father's right hand on our behalf: 
 
 
Hebrews 2:1

Now let's go back and chase that verse down, and it begins of course with David writing it in Psalms 110:1. This is a verse that I wish everyone would commit to memory if you haven't before, and know where it is.

The second is merely the L is capitalized, and the o-r-d is in the small case. So what you really have here is God the Father, says to God the Son) Sit thou at my right hand, (He's not going there for all eternity, but rather just for a period of time) until I make thine enemies thy footstool." 
 
 
I think the enemies here include all the satanic host, as well as all of Christ's rejecting humanity - they are going to be finally under His foot. He's going to have complete domination. Now let's move from here up to Matthew chapter 22, and drop down to verse 44. This is Christ in His earthly ministry, He uses this verse in Psalms Himself. But to pick up the flow of these verses let's begin at verse 41. 
 
 
Matthew 22:41-46 
 
"While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42. Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. 43. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit (that is by inspiration of the Holy Spirit) call him Lord, saying, 44. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45. If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?" (now look at the next verse) 46. And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions." 
 
 
They were absolutely stumped! Well what should they have known? That He was the Son of God. But by virtue of the promises made to David that He would come through the lineage of David, yes, the Scripture does speak of Him as the Son of David. But you see, that's not what Psalms 110:1 was speaking of. That Psalms was speaking of the very Godhead, and David had nothing to do with bringing that about except through the flesh. Now let's look at the next one which is in Mark chapter 12

Hebrews 1:13

And it's the same way with everything in creation, as it is constantly moving into a less useable state. And even we in this body of flesh, as I said in the last program, from the day we're born, death begins. It doesn't matter whether we live to be 10 or 70 or 100, that's beside the point; death is our final end, short of the Rapture of the Church. So the whole creation is under that same set of circumstances. It is moving closer and closer to the time when it will finally be exchanged for something totally new. Now let's back that up with some Scripture. 
 
 
Hebrews 1:11 
 
"They shall perish; (all the things God has created) but thou (the Creator) remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;" My, what a beautiful illustration. Now a garment doesn't wear out overnight. That's something that is accomplished over a process of time, and so is creation. As the eons of time are going by, everything is in entropy, it's all going into a less useable state, until finally God will undo the whole thing. Now verse 12, and using that same word: garment, or a vesture or piece of clothing: 
 
 
Hebrews 1:12 
 
"And as a vesture shalt thou (the Creator) fold them up, and they shall be changed: (I think a clearer word there would be exchanged. The heaven and earth are not going to be changed from this to that, but they're going to be totally destroyed, and we're going to have everything new.) but thou (Creator) art the same, and thy years shall not fail." Now let's go back once again to the Old Testament to Isaiah chapter 51, then we're going to look at Psalms again. 
 
 
Isaiah 51:6 
 
"Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, (same language) and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished."

And it's the same way with everything in creation, as it is constantly moving into a less useable state. And even we in this body of flesh, as I said in the last program, from the day we're born, death begins. It doesn't matter whether we live to be 10 or 70 or 100, that's beside the point; death is our final end, short of the Rapture of the Church. So the whole creation is under that same set of circumstances. It is moving closer and closer to the time when it will finally be exchanged for something totally new. Now let's back that up with some Scripture. 


Hebrews 1:11

"They shall perish; (all the things God has created) but thou (the Creator) remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;" My, what a beautiful illustration. Now a garment doesn't wear out overnight. That's something that is accomplished over a process of time, and so is creation. Romans 15:4a 
 
"For whatsoever things were written aforetime (before he came along) were written for our learning,..." 
 
 
Notice it says for learning not our doctrine! Like I said when we introduced Hebrews in our last taping, you won't find a Roman road to Salvation in the book of Hebrews, and you won't find a lot of the instructions for the Gentile Body of Christ in Hebrews, but it's loaded with things that enhance our learning. So now finishing this verse. 
 
 
Romans 15:4 
 
"For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we (as Grace Age believers, we as predominately a Gentile called-out people), through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope." 
 
 
Now, when I read this verse, the first Old Testament personality that comes to my mind is Joseph. That young man was hated by his brethren, sold into slavery, taken into a foreign country, and sold again as a slave, and even though he had come out pretty good (working for his Egyptian master), and you know the account of how his masters wife turned on Joseph, and accused him falsely, consequently, Joseph ends up in the dungeon. As near as I can figure it out he was down in that dungeon for 8 or 10 years. Now a lot of people would have given up hope, and would have said, "Well, God has forgotten all about me," but Joseph didn't do that. 
 
 
And all of a sudden Joseph comes out of that dungeon and becomes the second man in Egypt, and why? Because, as he told his brethren when they finally came together in Egypt, "You didn't do it, but rather God did." So that's where we can take comfort from the Scripture, that even when bad things happen, we know that God is in control. And sooner or later we're going to be able to look back on those bad things and see that God was in it as His purposes were being fulfilled. And I think that's exactly what this verse means. We go back to the Old Testament writers, and we can pick up all of these things that were written, not for our doctrine, as you won't find the plan of Salvation per se, but oh, we can see how God works in the lives of His people. So always keep that in mind even as study this book of Hebrews. The whole book of Hebrews is written primarily to Jewish people, to prove to them that this Jesus of Nazareth, whom most of them rejected in unbelief saying, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" And yet this book of Hebrews is proving that Christ, the Son of God, was better than anything that had come before. And as I've told you before, always look for that word "better" throughout the Book.

That's why I'm almost screaming that Salvation is by faith, and faith alone in that finished work of the cross. Listen, you can't add to it, and you can't take away from it. See that's why Paul puts such an anathema on those who would adulterate the Gospel of Salvation, by adding something that we might consider harmless in some of the deeds of the Law. But Paul says, "If you're going adulterate my Gospel, then you're under the anathema of God." And why not, because He had finished it completely. He suffered, He died, He shed His blood, and He arose from the dead. So how in the world can men dare to add to that for Salvation? So here's the whole idea that He had finished it, He now presented Himself in heaven as our High Priest, and He could sit down, and He never again had to do the work of a priest. Now let's see what Paul says about it back in Ephesians chapter 1, and verse 20. And again, I'm going to come up to verse 19 because of that word "power." Every time you see that word "power," you just stop and read it slowly and digest it. 
 
 
Ephesians 1:19 
 
"And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power." 
 
 
The only criteria for Salvation under Paul's Gospel is to believe it with all our hearts. That power is released when we believe. And it's according to the working of his mighty power, as we showed in the last program and that power was exercised at His resurrection. 
 
 
Ephesians 1:20 
 
"Which (that is the mighty power) he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, (remember my closing remarks of Romans 1:4? What is it but that it was the power of God when he raised Christ from the dead? Here it is again.) and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places." 
 
 
It was finished! No more priestly work needs to be done. It's all finished. And we are part and parcel of that power. Now his position at the Father's right hand is exemplified in verse 21. 
 
 
Ephesians 1:21 
 
"Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, (and again I'll go back to the power above) and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:"
