10th April Good Friday read through Luke 22:7-23:56

Luke 9:51 – Jesus “resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” 
 The rest of Luke’s writings, chapters 10 to 24, show what this means for Jesus 
 
Jesus knows, vv. 29-34 
Verse 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.” 
Verse 31 “Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.” 
This is not some prearranged password. 
 Jesus knows, he is in total control 
Heidelberg Q & A 1, ‘What is your only hope in life and death?’ ‘‘That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ.’ 
 
Jesus rules, vv. 35-40 
Jesus comes riding on a colt 
He fulfils a prophecy spoken by Zechariah in Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” 
The people cry out, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 
The King comes, the Christ, the Messiah comes to his people 
But not the King they expect 
He comes to bring peace 
 
Jesus weeps, vv. 41-44 
“As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it.” 
Jesus knows their enthusiasm and excitement won’t last 
 Less than a week later the crowds will turn on him 
He is not the King they expect 
They want the peace from Romans occupation, they want freedom, they want restoration 
Jesus will bring peace and freedom and restoration, but not in the way they want
