Acts 1:12-14 ESV 
 
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

12 Pagkatapos ay bumalik sila sa Jerusalem buhat sa tinatawag na bundok ng mga Olibo, malapit sa Jerusalem, na isang araw ng Sabbath lakarin. 13 Nang sila'y makapasok sa lunsod, umakyat sila sa silid sa itaas na doon ay nakatira sina Pedro, Juan, Santiago at Andres, Felipe at Tomas, Bartolome at Mateo, si Santiago na anak ni Alfeo, si Simon na Makabayan, at si Judas na anak ni Santiago. 14 Sama-samang itinalaga ng lahat ng mga ito ang kanilang sarili para sa pananalangin, kasama ang mga babae at si Maria na ina ni Jesus, at ang kanyang mga kapatid. 
 
ONE ACCORD IN PRAYER 
 
The Mount of Olives is actually a ridge with three summits, stretching two miles north to south, east of Jerusalem. Jesus took the disciples "as far as Bethany" (Luke 24:50), told them to expect the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5), and rose into the clouds (Acts 1:9). And Bethany is on the far, east side, about a mile and a half from Jerusalem. In the bible, a Sabbath day's journey is less than a mile, so that the exact travel of the disciples was unclear. 
 
The disciples stood stunned at the sudden departure of their teacher and friend. Jesus was no more with them physically but they have each other. They will gather in an upper room to pray, about 120 people in all (Acts 1:13–15). As they waited for the promised Holy Spirit, their first task was to pray, wait and seek God's guidance. 
 
Prayer should transcend any barriers. The disciples, Mary the mother of Jesus, Jesus’ brothers, men and women of diverse educational and economic backgrounds including children had gathered in one accord in prayer. Let’s take notice that the phrase "one accord”, translated as "one mind" in the NASB. It denotes harmony or several individuals, collectively moving forward gracefully. It is one of the defining characteristics that God designs for the church, for it is founded in "the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Eph 4:3). The church is one - one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father (Eph 4:4–6). Everyone should strive to function with "all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love" (Eph 4:2). 
 
Could the apostles, the devout women, Jesus' brothers, and the other disciples of the 120 sit in unity unless God is at their center? Their waiting lasted about nine days between Jesus' ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit. They had spent this time in the upper room, praying, and in the temple, worshiping and blessing God (Luke 24:52–53). This worshiping and seeking God does make all believers as united people, does it not? 
 
Definitely, prayer was first and foremost of the early church. Should not prayer be the number one priority that we should pursue in our private and collective lives? Prayer is simple as children talking with their dad. When a child is talking to his father, is there a wrong grammar? No. Only a wrong heart.

19 As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.

Alalahanin mo rin ito alang-alang sa akin, O aking Diyos, at kahabagan mo ako ayon sa kadakilaan ng iyong tapat na pag-ibig. 
 
 
SPIRITUAL DECISIVENESS 
 
Nehemiah was both tough and tender leader. He was compassionate but not a coward. As one who revered God, he was very courageous to make radical and crucial decisions. The disregard of the Sabbath’s observance was not a small matter that he would just tolerate. 
 
He had to drastically restore the Sabbath observance and temple worship. He commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And he stationed some of his servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day. Nehemiah wasn't going to tolerate the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares to lodge outside Jerusalem. He threatened them saying, “if you do so again, I will lay hands on you!” He did not mean the gentle laying on of hands for prayer, but the rough laying on of hands for correction. In other words, he did everything to remove the possibility that they will break the Sabbath again. 
 
Spiritual decisiveness is a result of clear and strong convictions. A believer who is totally committed to please God is not unequivocal in his stand against sin. That is, an open sin is always black and could not become gray. That a sin is always ugly and shameful before the holy God. One won’t stop doing his sinful lifestyle that he can justify or rationalize. May we will hate sin as God does. 
 
Furthermore, he was determined to restore the Levites to their duties. That they have to purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Believers should not be famous only to what we don’t do but also to what we do. As His children, are we famous by what we don’t do [no vices, etc] more than what we do[like worship, serving others, etc]? May, we will always shine for God by our good works.[Matt 5:16]

44 On that day men were appointed over the storerooms, the contributions, the firstfruits, and the tithes, to gather into them the portions required by the Law for the priests and for the Levites according to the fields of the towns, for Judah rejoiced over the priests and the Levites who ministered. 45 And they performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the command of David and his son Solomon. 46 For long ago in the days of David and Asaph there were directors of the singers, and there were songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. 47 And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel and in the days of Nehemiah gave the daily portions for the singers and the gatekeepers; and they set apart that which was for the Levites; and the Levites set apart that which was for the sons of Aaron.

A GREAT JOYFUL GIVING 
 
It’s quite notable that the book ends with a high note. From being miserable to become a merry people. From wanting to having wealth. Their joy in the Lord results to generosity. It is one thing to give and it’s another thing to give out of joy. On that dedication day, “men were appointed over the storerooms, the contributions, the firstfruits, and the tithes, to gather into them the portions required by the Law for the priests and for the Levites according to the fields of the towns, for Judah rejoiced over the priests and the Levites who ministered.” 
 
A vibrant life is attractive. Judah rejoiced over the priests and the Levites who ministered. Nobody would come near to a pouting person. But, everyone loves to be with a buoyant personality. At first they were grieved because of their sins. But, at the end of the day, they were joyful because of God’s goodness and grace. 
 
Rejoicing in worship doesn’t mean no restraint, is it? They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the command of David and his son Solomon. Joy and holiness aren’t mutually exclusive, are they? We rejoice in being consecrated or being set apart unto God and is grieved when we sinned against Him. As John Piper says, “God is most glorified in us if we are the most satisfied in Him.” 
 
As a result, the daily portions were provided for the singers and the gatekeepers; and that which was for the Levites; and that which was for the sons of Aaron. There was no lack for those who are working in the temple for everyone has the joy to give. Is your giving unto the Lord joyful? As Paul said, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”[2 Cor 9:6,7]

26 “Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you, and they committed great blasphemies. 27 Therefore you gave them into the hand of their enemies, who made them suffer. And in the time of their suffering they cried out to you and you heard them from heaven, and according to your great mercies you gave them saviors who saved them from the hand of their enemies. 28 But after they had rest they did evil again before you, and you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies, so that they had dominion over them. Yet when they turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven, and many times you delivered them according to your mercies. 29 And you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. Yet they acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments, but sinned against your rules, which if a person does them, he shall live by them, and they turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not obey. 30 Many years you bore with them and warned them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet they would not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. 31 Nevertheless, in your great mercies you did not make an end of them or forsake them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.

CHASTISEMENT 
 
It’s tragic that during the time of comfort and abundance, Gods' people turn against Him. Man is more vulnerable in times of abundance than in times of lack, isn’t it? Thus, for their rebellion and blasphemies, God gave them over to their enemies, who made them to suffer. Simply said, their suffering was a chastisement from God. 
 
Certainly, this was a consequence to their sins. The writer of Hebrews says; 
“For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, 
and chastises every son whom he receives.” 
It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?[Heb 12:7-9] 
 
God’s love isn’t pampering but purifying love. His love doesn’t rejoice in evil. God brings chastisement as a "wake-up call" to His people. As a result, God's people then turn back to Him. Having been forgiven, blessed and satisfied by God, they again turn from Him, and the cycle continued. This ‘blessing -rebellion – chastisement-repentance -blessing’ cycle seemed endless. Yet, in these cycles, God doesn’t change. 
 
Are we different than these feeble Jews? Do we feel as if God has gotten tired of us? That we couldn't ask him to forgive us anymore for a sin that beset us? But, God never gets tired of us, and never turns away the repentant heart. Thankfully, His patience never runs out. After all, He knows our frame that we are made of dust.

22 “And you gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner. So they took possession of the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan. 23 You multiplied their children as the stars of heaven, and you brought them into the land that you had told their fathers to enter and possess. 24 So the descendants went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hand, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would. 25 And they captured fortified cities and a rich land, and took possession of houses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in your great goodness.

Iyong pinasuko sa harapan nila ang mga naninirahan sa lupain, ang mga Cananeo, at ibinigay mo sa kanilang mga kamay, pati ang kanilang mga hari at ang mga tao ng lupain, upang magawa nila sa kanila kung ano ang kanilang naisin. 25 Kanilang nasakop ang mga bayang nakukutaan at ang mayamang lupain, at inangkin ang mga bahay na punô ng lahat ng mabubuting bagay, ang mga balon na hinukay, mga ubasan, mga olibohan, mga punungkahoy na may bungang sagana; kaya't sila'y kumain, nabusog, tumaba, at nalugod sa iyong dakilang kabutihan. 
 
 
WHAT GOD GAVE, THEY CAPTURED 
 
All that they possessed were gifts from God. Nothing whatsoever could they claim as out of their abilities and power. It was God who drove the tribes out of the Promised Land, with their obedience to step and 
claim the lots allotted to them. 
 
Two key phrases that provide a balanced view of blessings, that are; “God gave” and “they captured” They captured the places God has given. God’s promise can only be experienced by obedience. Blessings are not designed to drop at our laps but to capture it by our courage. Clearly, the basis of obedience is the promise of God. Victory is assured but we must hold unto our swords and thrust forward in faith. 
 
Similarly, God has offered to us His salvation for free. Yet, it isn’t automatic. Those who are sincere have truly repented from their sins and humbly trust Christ would be sure of their salvation. 
 
Because they moved in deeper into the heartlands of Canaan, they captured fortified cities and a rich land, and took possession of houses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in your great goodness. As somebody said, “Nothing ventured, nothing happens.” Spiritual fullness are for those who step up and claim God’s promises. As Paul said, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”[Phil2:12,13]

YOU MADE A NAME FOR YOURSELF 
 
 
God was there when the Jews were in deep crisis. He saw their afflictions and heard their cry at the Red Sea, respectively. He routed the proud Pharaoh and Egypt in spectacular fashion. The signs and wonders [10 plagues] demonstrated against Pharaoh had exalted God’s name, even until now. 
 
 
Here, Ezra, Nehemiah and all had recognized God’s goodness, namely; the crossing of the Red Sea as if walking on a dry land, the drowning of the Egyptians, the pillar of fire that guided, comforted and lighted them for 40 years; the giving of the laws at Mount Sina including the Sabbath; the manna[bread] from heaven and water out of the flint rock and the possession of the Promised Land. This summary list isn’t comprehensive. But, they are enough to provoke our minds to wonder and awe, aren’t they? 
 
Another sure sign of revival (following the brokenness of heart) is reflection on the goodness of God. When our pride is cast down, and our hearts humble before God, we can begin to see Him for who He is - and when we see that, we see how good God is. As Paul writes, “Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?”[Rom 2:4]

THE PERIL OF COMPROMISE 
 
Tobiah was the man who had opposed the rebuilding work in connivance with Sanballat. He was disturbed that Nehemiah came to rebuild the walls [2:10], mocked Nehemiah's work [2:19; 4:3], was angry that the work was being done [4:7] and tried to get Nehemiah to stop the work, and came to the plain of Ono where he could attack Nehemiah. 
 
Yet, there were many in Judah who pledged with him, that is, they befriended him. Why? It was because he had family ties to many in the tribe of Judah. In fact, Nehemiah observed and said that “they spoke of his good deeds in my presence and reported my words to him.” Perhaps they were oblivious to the sinister work of Tobiah, so that they have had a hard time believing and perceiving his evil deeds. Perhaps they were saying, "He has always been nice to us; we saw all the good he has done to us." Their ‘pledges with him’ suggested that they have had financial dealings with Tobiah. That is, their self-interests were evident in protecting their trading contracts through marriage connections. This is the peril when self-interest overrules God’s purposes. 
 
It’s sad that their self-interests had caused them to justify this friendship, thereby treating the enemy lightly. A compromise happens when people choose what is convenient rather than the commitment to the truth. Is it an ordinary situation when one becomes an enemy of God by befriending the world? [Jas 4:7] Nehemiah, in this case, did not allow himself to be sidetrack by listening to them. He neither ignore them nor entertain them. He was focused to his priority task and let the finished wall answer his critics.

And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah, 17 who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. 18 And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me. 19 And I said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and widely spread, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another. 20 In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.”

THE SWORD AND TROWEL 
 
Were they victorious because the enemy shrunk back? [v.15] Definitely no! Their getting on with the work and finishing it was the victory. They would not be at peace and secured until the wall was rebuilt, would they? It is easy to feel that just enduring trials is the victory, isn’t it? An attack may prevent us to progress and work for the LORD. Thus, victory is enduring the attack while continuing the progress and work for the LORD. 
 
Nehemiah devised a strategy adapted now as the ‘sword and the trowel.’ While some did the work of rebuilding, the others did the defending. All the workers had been working with trowels in their hands with ready sword at their side, until the work is done. In the same perspective, God’s kingdom is built with both a sword and a trowel. A ‘sword work’ to ward off against every spiritual force of wickedness in the high places. And, ‘trowel work’ in building up the people of God. As in winning basketball, the team should take care both offense and defense. Moreover, Nehemiah did ensure their readiness by setting up watchmen to blow trumpet alarms to rally everyone. 
 
All of what Nehemiah did demonstrated that he did not minimize the gigantic task. Although, they put themselves 100% ready for the crucible to happen, they didn’t trust in themselves alone. Nehemiah has highlighted the true source of their strength, saying, “Our God will fight for us.” As Solomon warned us, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”[Prov 16:9] 
 
In our fight for the advancement of God’s kingdom, we hold the sword and trowel on both of our hands while our hearts are pointing to God.

WATCH AND PRAY 
 
The height of the wall didn’t only rise up. But, the gaps were beginning to close. Therefore, the enemies of the work became angrier. Any development for good unto the glory of God in and through our lives would infuriate the enemy. The progress being made by God's people in touching a lost world for Jesus Christ is not surprising to make the devil angry. 
 
This time, they didn’t satisfy to mock and deride. But, they threatened and planned for a violent attack. Perhaps the workers thought, “Did not we have peace before we began to build the wall? Did it not appear now that the very building of the wall may prompt the attack to come? Perhaps, it would have been easy for the workers to shrink in fear and think that all their efforts would be made in vain. 
 
Like Nehemiah’s enemies, Satan always does his threatening tactics, doesn’t he? Thus, Peter exhorted us, saying, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”[1 Pet 5:8] Definitely, threats may create confusions. This is an important strategy of Satan. When distracted, God’s people would be out of focus toward God and His promises. 
 
How did Nehemiah and his men handle all these? 
 
They prayed and set guards. They expressed their strong faith in their prayers. Notedly, God could easily trump the enemy but He allowed them to continue their attacks. Why? It was because He was delighted that His people would draw closer to Him with a deeper trust than ever before. God did His perfect work in building the walls firstly by building His people. 
 
They also knew that prayer didn't mean they had to do nothing. God gave them common sense to do what they could in protecting against attack. We can do a lot of sensible things only after we have prayed. Do we have an area in our Christian life that needs particular attention? It isn't enough to pray. We need to set a watch as well, daily. Do give a special attention and accountability to that area of your life until you are walking in consistent victory.

A DELUSION 
 
Israel's political and religious leaders, commonly known as ‘the Jews’ have conspired to bring Jesus to this point. They did explain to Pilate that Jesus committed an act of blasphemy. Jesus’ claims of being the “Son of God” was so vile and justifiable for them to brutally execute Him. However, they didn’t realize that this raised further doubts in Pilate's mind (John 19:8). Even, his wife was also worried about the prospect of harming Jesus (Mat 27:19). 
 
Hearing about Jesus’ claim as Son of God had even made Pilate afraid. Why? The Roman mythology included belief in a host of demigods. These were men with one divine parent. Hence, to abuse a demigod could bring the wrath of that god. Apparently, this was the reason why he asked Jesus, “Where you from?” 
 
Jesus was silent. In this kangaroo court, Jesus simply left these questions unanswered (Mat 26:62–63). He only replies should it is essential (Mat 26:63–66). And, this is not one of those times. He knew Pilate had no interest in deep thinking over these issues (John 18:38). Having been unfamiliar with Jewish Scriptures or prophecies (John 18:35), there was no reason for Jesus to debate those nuances when He already knows how this will turn out (Mat 20:19). 
 
Frustrated about His silence, Pilate resorted to intimidation, saying, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” He really thought he calls the shots. As the Jews, Pilate was delusioned by his power. He believed he could either choose to have Jesus executed or released. But, the ultimate cause of these events is not Pilate, or Pilate's power. It's God's will (Mat 26:53–54) and it's being driven by His permissive will to the manipulations of other people (Mat 26:14–16).

THE CROWN OF THORNS 
 
On the morning of Jesus’ crucifixion, the Roman soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and placed it on Jesus’ head, openly mocking and ridiculing Jesus as the “King of the Jews” It is arguably one of the most iconic images of Christ’s suffering. 
 
What is its significance? 
 
More than the piercing on Jesus’ bare head, Jesus endured, the crown signifies Christ’s ultimate humility in trading His heavenly crown for a lowly crown of suffering and shame. It was fashioned by the Roman soldiers as a mock coronation for a lowly political prisoner. However, the rejection of Jesus as king was prophesied. As Isaiah writes, “But He was pierced for our offenses, He was crushed for our wrongdoings; the punishment for our well-being was laid upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed.” (Isa 53:5) 
 
For us, Jesus indeed is the king. One day, the entire universe will bow to Jesus as the “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Rev 19:16). What the Roman soldiers meant as a mockery, has in fact has projected Christ’s two roles; firstly, as a suffering servant (see Isa 53), and secondly, as ultimately the conquering Messiah-King (see Rev 19). 
 
Moreover, Jesus was willing to endure the pain, insults, and shame, all on our account. The crown of thorns, and its corresponding suffering are things of the past already. Today, Jesus has now received the crown of which He is worthy. “But we see Him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone” (Heb 2:9]

THE CROWN OF THORNS

On the morning of Jesus’ crucifixion, the Roman soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and placed it on Jesus’ head, openly mocking and ridiculing Jesus as the “King of the Jews” It is arguably one of the most iconic images of Christ’s suffering.

WHEN PETER DENIED JESUS 
 
We admire Peter’s bravery by lashing out with a sword one of the soldiers who arrested Jesus (V.10). Fortunately for him, Jesus had requested the soldiers to let them go unhurt (see v.6–9). And Jesus was right that the disciples will be on the hiding after His arrest (Mat 26:56). 
 
Peter's claim of willingness to die for Christ made a dramatic turn (John 13:37). Again, we should give credit for his bravery, at least, he attempted to fight back when Jesus was under arrest (v.10) and secretly followed along to see what would happen to his Master (Mat 26:58). However, under a real threat, and without Christ by his side, Peter gave in to fear. He lied and claimed he was not a follower of Christ. Nothing can be farther from the truth. This was what Jesus had predicted would happen and he was aware of it (John 13:38]. And, Peter would deny Jesus two more times to make this denial an outright slap to his presumptuousness (see. v. 25–27). . . 25–27). 
 
What unfolded next was interesting, in that the servant girl had questioned Peter about his relationship to Jesus, but did not seem to do so with John (see.v.17). Scholars had suggested that Peter might have had a distinctive accent which suggested he was from Galilee (Mat 26:73), making the gatekeeper suspicious. She was at least curious enough to ask. And, Peter's response to know not Jesus had become one of the heartbreaking and infamous denial in history.

KEEP THEM IN YOUR NAME 
 
Jesus knew exactly that the hardships that will follow after His arrest would cause them to be scattered. Self-preservation out of fear and intimidation does result to scattering, doesn’t it? It threatens unity. As the old military strategy says, “Divide and conquer.” Disunity is precursor to fall. 
 
While Jesus was with them, they were one as sheep under Him, the great and loving shepherd. No one was lost except Judas. He kept and loved them unto the end, even beyond. Thus, the reason why He prayed for them – that they will be kept intact or united. 
 
Unity would never be achieved without His people recognizing God’s authority. This is the reason why Jesus pleaded the Father to keep them ‘in His name’. Jesus referring to the use of the Father’s "name" is not a reference to magical spells or incantations. To speak "in the name of" the father is to invoke His authority and power. 
 
In a family, the father is the authority figure. Should every child recognize his authority, there is a proper alignment and harmony in the family. The church with a high view of God would surely be united, where the reverence and love of God permeate. 
 
As a result, Jesus’ ‘joy is fulfilled in themselves.’ That is, Jesus is greatly magnified in and through a loving relationship in His family. As he said, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” [John 13:35]

Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

FULNESS OF JOY 
 
The deep sorrow will be celebrated by their persecutors. However, their intense pain will soon turn into even-more-intense celebration. An analogy like a woman in childbirth. In fact, it's a cliché for mothers to remind their children of their labor pain, if the child is being unruly. The point of Jesus is those painful experiences are immediately overruled by the joy of the newborn baby. Yes, a laboring mother does experience an intense, agonizing, and even frightening ordeal. Yet, for her love of the child, birth pain is relatively short-lived and more easily hurdled in the end. 
 
Push forward, upon seeing the risen Christ, their joy overflowed that even persecution and death cannot nullify or overcome. In Acts 5:41, Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. [see also Acts 8:8; 13:52] The disciples who walked with Jesus at Emmaus road “worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.” [Luke 24:52). 
 
At that time, many of their questions will be answered. The issues which confused the disciples will be clear. As a result, they will "ask nothing of" Jesus anymore. Their faith ‘in the name of Jesus’ would be strong to pray. No circumstances could make them feel lacking and helpless. Why? Jesus promised, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.” When the time arrived they will ask “in his name” – they will receive, so that their joy will be full.

WHO CRUCIFIED JESUS? 
 
A blessed "Good Friday" to all! 
 
In Matthew’s account, it was the Roman soldiers who crucified Him. Matt 27:35 we read, “And when they [Roman soldiers] had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots.” Luke said, it was the Jews. He accounted, “Men of Israel…Hear these words…this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men” (Acts 2: 22–23). This was affirmed by Paul in 1 Thess 2:15, saying, “ the Jews, who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets.” 
 
But, how about us? Are we not guilty too? Paul writes that we “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” and that “the wages of sin is death” (Rom. 3:23; 6:23). Christ died for us because God loves us.[Rom 5:8] 
 
But, the perplexing part is that Jesus death was determined by the Father according to Luke in Acts 2:23. His death was neither accidental nor incidental. In fact, the names of the redeemed are written in the book of life before the foundation of the world for the Lamb[Jesus] was destined to die for them. [Rev 13:8] 
 
God the Father did not spare Him[Rom 8:32] for us. “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities…. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him.’ (Isa. 53:4–5, 10). Thus, it is theologically right to say the Father crucified His Son. John Piper states so beautifully, “Just as Abraham lifted the knife over the chest of his son Isaac, but then spared his son because there was a ram in the thicket, so God the Father lifted the knife over the chest of his own Son, Jesus — but did not spare him, because he was the ram; he was the substitute. God did not spare his own Son, because it was the only way he could spare us.” 
 
All of the above won’t matter if Jesus Himself wasn’t willing. He was a triumphant Savior not a victim. He clearly declared, “I am the good shepherd…and I lay down my life for the sheep…I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again” (John 10:14–18). 
 
Today, let’s look back to Calvary with awe and worship. He died for the sins He did not deserve so we can obtain the deliverance we don’t deserve.

TRUTH EXPOSES SIN 
 
John came down as the light of the world.[John 8:12] As lights beaming through the darkness, His teachings are truth that expose their evil deeds. But, they love darkness as nocturnal animals offended by the glare of lights. Hence they hate Christ and by doing so, they hate the Father as well. 
 
Moreover, the miracles that Jesus did has proven His claims and teachings were true. Though unquestionably convincing, Jesus’ enemies do refuse to recognize Him but were vehemently seeking for His death. Jesus attributed this as fulfilment of prophecy, saying, “This is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ 
 
As person under a scorching heat of the sun but denying it, these hard hearted people has no excuse for their sin. The excuse "I did not know" won’t apply to them who witnessed and heard the truth and choose to attack it. Those who persecute Christians because they act like Christ are not acting in ignorance. They are following the promptings of their own sinful hearts. Was Jesus saying "anyone who has never explicitly heard the gospel is innocent of sin?” Definitely not![Rom 1:21] Rather, He is saying that those who hear His Word—including through His followers (Mat 28:19)—have no excuse for persecuting and hating Christians.

Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

LORD, SHOW US THE FATHER 
 
No matter how Jesus had assured them, the disciples were still troubled when Jesus spoke of leaving away. Thus, Thomas and Philip’s questions were understandable. Here, Philip switched the issue from "knowing" God, to "seeing" God. Did he hope for something either like Moses in Ex 33:18-23 or Isa 6:1-7? Perhaps, he was looking for a miraculous sign! 
 
Jesus’ reply was direct, that is, "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father" (v.9). Simply said, there is no need. To see Christ is to see God for they are One (John 14:7, 10–11) In his previous claims, there is no ambiguity that He claimed as divine. “Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”[John 8:58] He is the revelation of God to mankind. 
 
Jesus made a gentle scolding, something needed for His inner circle (Mat 16:9; Mark 8:21). The reason why He listed reasons why His claim was true. Firstly, His acts perfectly according to the will of God. It was an obvious point, which was why Jesus again poses a rhetorical question. As with His actions, Jesus' speech or words also further supports that what He says is true (Mark 1:22). Nothing Jesus says or does contradicts the idea that He is God (John 8:46; Heb 4:15), and His actions confirm that He is acting according to the Father's will (John 9:4)

4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 
 
4 Nalalaman ninyo ang daan patungo sa lugar na aking pupuntahan.” 5 Sinabi sa kanya ni Tomas, “Panginoon, hindi namin alam kung saan ka pupunta. Paano namin malalaman ang daan?” 6 Sinabi sa kanya ni Jesus, “Ako ang daan, at ang katotohanan, at ang buhay. Sinuman ay hindi makakarating sa Ama kundi sa pamamagitan ko. 7 Kung ako'y kilala ninyo ay makikilala rin ninyo ang aking Ama. Mula ngayon siya'y inyong nakikilala at siya'y inyong nakita.” 
 
HOW CAN WE KNOW THE WAY? 
 
After Jesus declared that He was going away, Thomas asked a question which makes a point, at least from an earthly point of view. Normally, we do determine first an end goal and then work accordingly towards it, don’t we? How can someone know "the way" when they don't know where they're going? Since these men are not sure of where Jesus plans to go, they aren't sure they will be able to get there. 
 
Hence, Jesus made a point that it is not somewhere any person can "go," in the sense of making the journey according to their own efforts (Rom 3:20; 11:6). No amount of good deeds or effort will get them there. Is salvation accomplished by good works? Definitely not! Paul said later, “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). 
 
Rather, "the way" to be reconciled to God the Father is not a process; it's in a person [2 Cor 4:6]. Thus , He emphasized, by saying, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” [v.6] Without much details, Jesus had taken charge that they shouldn’t worry about His going away for they know Him.[ v.1-3] Why? Knowing Him is knowing the Father. Paul had explained that our knowledge of God is all by God’s initiative. He writes, “For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”[2 Cor 4:6]

KNOW CHRIST, KNOW THE FATHER 
 
As Jesus shouted to raise Lazarus to life, so Jesus did a loud, deliberate proclamation here. That is, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.” His claims corresponded to what Heb 1:3 states, that is, “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.” 
 
People were confronted with two only two options being confronted by Jesus, claiming as the light. That is, either they will believe and follow Him as the light or they remain in darkness. There is no in between. And as the light, His words reveals the Father. When one hears from Jesus, they are hearing from God the Father. Rejecting the Son is as rejecting God (John 3:36). Paul affirmed this by saying that Jesus is the visible form of the invisible Father.[Col 1:15] Jesus is the "light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God."[2 Cor 4:4] 
 
During His first coming, Jesus did not come to judge the world but to save the world from darkness. However, we must receive Him and His words to keep it. Rejecting His words is costly someday. To "remain in darkness" is not merely to choose ignorance. It means to decide to remain away from God, forever (Mat 25:30). What awaits for them is God’s judgment. It is unfair for a teacher to give an examinations to his students a subject matter that he had not taught yet, is it not? God is just. Likewise, the words that they heard from Jesus will judge them someday. In other words, the gospel that the people reject would be the basis of their condemnation.

That he will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

A WILDERNESS ESCAPE 
 
The council, comprising primarily of religious leaders, was determined to arrest and kill Jesus. Thus, Jesus fled to the countryside. Was Jesus afraid to die? Definitely not. He isn’t governed by fear of man but fear of His Father. He came and is passionately devoted to do His Father’s will. His escape was not a sign of timidity but of wisdom and prudence. 
 
Simply put, it was not yet time. Notedly, while He was evading the public, He spent time with His disciples. He did not vanish into the wilderness to be idle, did He? A time from hostile crowds became a fruitful ministry with His faithful few. It was a change of focus. 
 
The feast was fast approaching and many people were looking for Him, mostly for the wrong reasons. Apart from a few who believed Him, the rest either sought Him for benefits from His miracles or to arrest Him. Jesus, in no doubt, was popular. However, he wasn’t carried away by the lure of popularity. His heart was locked in fulfilling the will of his Father. He said, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.”[John 6:38]
