1 Kings 15:9-15 ESV 
9 In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa began to reign over Judah, 10 and he reigned forty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah the daughter of Abishalom. 11 And Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as David his father had done. 12 He put away the male cult prostitutes out of the land and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. 13 He also removed Maacah his mother from being queen mother because she had made an abominable image for Asherah. And Asa cut down her image and burned it at the brook Kidron. 14 But the high places were not taken away. Nevertheless, the heart of Asa was wholly true to the Lord all his days. 15 And he brought into the house of the Lord the sacred gifts of his father and his own sacred gifts, silver, and gold, and vessels. 
 
ASA, A GOOD KING. 
Unlike his predecessors, Asa ‘did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as David his father had done.’ We understand that he was not perfect but that he followed His father David’s reign, the abstinence from any form idolatry. He put away the male cult prostitutes out of the land and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. He even stripped his own mother Maacah her crown as the queen. Why? She had made an abominable image for Asherah. He cut down her image and burned it at the brook Kidron. 
 
Asa did not allow her relationship with family to shroud his relationship with God. How many believers had mellowed down in their commitment to God by consenting to their erring family member? Our relationship with God should be paramount in all things, should it be not? For the reputation of the family before the world, they would sacrifice their relationship with God. 
 
However, the high places were not taken away. There was a reform at Jerusalem. However, outside of the city, he let the high places to continue for 41 years. He could have been a better king should he completely removed the idol worship. Thus, it was his son Hezekiah who would remove all these in the future. [ 2 Kings 18:4]. Asa was a good king but he was not the best. 
 
Perhaps, we are plagued by complacency in our lives. Thus, we allow the seemingly lesser or secondary dangers as the ‘high places” and taken them for granted. Let’s not allow the little foxes to ruin the vines. [Song 2:15] Should we be acceptable before God, let us present our everything to Him. 
 
As Rom 12:1,2 says, “ I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

He took away everything. He also took away all the shields of gold that Solomon had made, 27 and King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard, who kept the door of the king's house. 28 And as often as the king went into the house of the Lord, the guard carried them and brought them back to the guardroom. 
 
REPLACING GOLD WITH BRONZE. 
Rehoboam’s reign at the south was marked with evil practices in almost every place. “Judah did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins that they committed, more than all that their fathers had done.”[v.22] 
 
In his fifth year, Shishak king of Egypt invaded the land. He took away every treasure from the temple and the palace. This included the shields of gold that Solomon had made. Rehoboam replaced them with shields of bronze and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard, who kept the door of the king's house. The wealth Solomon had accumulated were gone in just five years. 
 
Substituting gold with bronze is unquestionably a downgrade. How many times we sacrifice the superior with the cheap in life? The temporal for the eternal? Or the important with the urgent? Let’s not forget what Paul had argued, saying, “For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” [2 Cor 4:17,18] 
 
This replacement is a perfect picture of the decline under the days of Rehoboam. During Solomon’s reign, the gold shields were hung on display in the House of the House of the Forest of Lebanon (1 Kings 10:16-17). Under Rehoboam, these replacement bronze shields were kept in a protected guardroom until they were specifically needed for state occasions. He was contented to assure himself that the appearance had not much difference. 
How many times a believer is ‘having the appearance of godliness but denying its power.’ [2 Tim 3:5] Forms replace functions. Religious rituals replace reverential worship. Religious appearance replaces relationship authenticity with God. 
 
Today, are you and I replacing our gold for bronze?

At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick. 2 And Jeroboam said to his wife, “Arise, and disguise yourself, that it not be known that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who said of me that I should be king over this people. 3 Take with you ten loaves, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what shall happen to the child.” 
 
 
4 Jeroboam's wife did so. She arose and went to Shiloh and came to the house of Ahijah. Now Ahijah could not see, for his eyes were dim because of his age. 5 And the Lord said to Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to inquire of you concerning her son, for he is sick. Thus and thus shall you say to her.” 
 
When she came, she pretended to be another woman. 6 But when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, he said, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why do you pretend to be another? For I am charged with unbearable news for you. 7 Go, tell Jeroboam, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: “Because I exalted you from among the people and made you leader over my people Israel 8 and tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you, and yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with all his heart, doing only that which was right in my eyes, 9 but you have done evil above all who were before you and have gone and made for yourself other gods and metal images, provoking me to anger, and have cast me behind your back, 10 therefore behold, I will bring harm upon the house of Jeroboam and will cut off from Jeroboam every male, both bond and free in Israel, and will burn up the house of Jeroboam, as a man burns up dung until it is all gone. 11 Anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat, for the Lord has spoken it.”’ 12 Arise therefore, go to your house. When your feet enter the city, the child shall die. 13 And all Israel shall mourn for him and bury him, for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found something pleasing to the Lord, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam. 14 Moreover, the Lord will raise up for himself a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam today. And henceforth, 15 the Lord will strike Israel as a reed is shaken in the water, and root up Israel out of this good land that he gave to their fathers and scatter them beyond the Euphrates, because they have made their Asherim, provoking the Lord to anger. 16 And he will give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam, which he sinned and made Israel to sin.” 
 
17 Then Jeroboam's wife arose and departed and came to Tirzah. And as she came to the threshold of the house, the child died. 18 And all Israel buried him and mourned for him, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke by his servant Ahijah the prophet. 
 
CAN A MAN DECEIVE GOD? 
The time came that the son of Jeroboam, Abijah, got sick. This prompted Jeroboam to devise a sinister plan. He told his wife, “Arise, and disguise yourself, that it not be known that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to Shiloh. Behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who said of me that I should be king over this people. Take with you ten loaves, some cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what shall happen to the child.” 
 
Why didn’t he think of asking the help from the priests at Bethel or Dan? Did he realize now that only Jehovah is the true God and Ahijah, God’s true prophet? But, why the disguise? He was so proud to admit his wrong and believed He could get God’s blessing by fraud. Similarly, Saul went to the witch of Endor to get the blessing of God through Samuel. 
 
However, what he thought was a brilliant idea did backfire. He was not deceiving God but himself definitely. “And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”[Heb 4:13] He might had thought that Ahijah might be failing in his eyesight. But, he’s not blind in spiritual insight. Ahijah, in return, had pronounced judgment upon the end of Jeroboam’s reign and family. 
 
The psalmist David even had articulated; 
“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! 
You know when I sit down and when I rise up; 
you discern my thoughts from afar. 
You search out my path and my lying down 
and are acquainted with all my ways. 
Even before a word is on my tongue, 
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.”[Psa 139:1-4] 
 
What Jeroboam did was futile. They are fools who claim that there is no God. [Psa 14:1] However, they are equally fools, if not much fooler, who do believe God is true but try to fool Him, are they not? Should we believe God, let us always prove it by our reverence to Him.

1 Kings 13:26-32 ESV 
26 And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord; therefore the Lord has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the Lord spoke to him.” 27 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And they saddled it. 28 And he went and found his body thrown in the road, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the body. The lion had not eaten the body or torn the donkey. 29 And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back to the city to mourn and to bury him. 30 And he laid the body in his own grave. And they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!” 31 And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones. 32 For the saying that he called out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria shall surely come to pass.” 
 
GIVING HONOR APPROPRIATELY. 
The man of God was killed according to the word of God. “All the circumstances of this tragic occurrence (the undevoured carcass, the untouched ass, the passengers unmolested by the lion, though standing there) were calculated to produce an irresistible impression that the hand of God was in it.”[from Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible] Moreover, he had to be buried not in the tomb of the man of God from Judah’s fathers, in fulfillment of the previous prophecy. 
 
The prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back to the city to mourn and to bury him. “How strange it was for the old prophet to look upon the carcass of the dead prophet, and to realize: “My sin was worse than his.” The ways of God’s judgment are sometimes past finding out, and only understandable from eternity.” [ D. Guzik] 
 
The prophet from Bethel lied to him, led him into sin, and prophesied judgment against him. Yet, he laid the corpse in his own tomb. And he said to his sons, “When I am dead, then bury me in the tomb where the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.” This was his respect to the man of God from Judah. 
 
“Perhaps he understood that the word he spoke against Jeroboam required a courage he did not have; therefore he confirmed the word of the man of God against Jeroboam and the altar at Bethel.”[D. Guzik] That is, the man’s failure to obey God’s word that caused his life later had not negated his admirable boldness earlier to confront the king the word of God. Unfortunately, in real life, one mistake a person does is remembered clouding over his one hundred and one good deeds done previously.

20 And as they sat at the table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back. 21 And he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord and have not kept the command that the Lord your God commanded you, 22 but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’” 23 And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 And as he went away a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body. 25 And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived. 
 
TAKING THE WORD OF GOD SERIOUSLY. 
What could be a great meal for the man of God was spoiled. This time the word of the Lord came to the host. Thus, he rebuked the man of God, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord and have not kept the command that the Lord your God commanded you, 22 but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’” 
 
Taking the word of God carelessly is very costly, is it not? Thus Jesus has warned us, “If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.”[John 12:47,48] 
 
Our faithful obedience to His word does only ensure that ‘better is the end of a thing than its beginning.’ [Ecc 7:8a] Thus, the disobedient man of God had ended his life miserably. ‘A lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body. And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body.’[v.24,25] 
What a pathetic sight. 
 
Let us resolve therefore to uphold the word of God. As Solomon concluded, “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”[ Ecc 12:13] Even, Joshua had written, ‘This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.’[Jos 1:8] 
 
Be committed to make the word of God as the basis of your belief and practice.

1 Kings 13:11-19 ESV 
11 Now an old prophet lived in Bethel. And his sons[a] came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told to their father the words that he had spoken to the king. 12 And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone. 13 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted it. 14 And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he said, “I am.” 15 Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.” 16 And he said, “I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place, 17 for it was said to me by the word of the Lord, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’” 18 And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him. 19 So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water. 
 
DECEIVED. 
The man of God was very clear about the warning from God. There was no ambiguity. That is, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’ Our success over temptation yesterday does not always guarantee the same today. The man of God was able to say no to Jeroboam but not to the old prophet. He wasn’t enticed by the reward Jeroboam had offered to him. However, he was deceived to believe the lie of the old prophet. 
 
Why? 
 
The prophet had tricked him that “an angel spoke to him by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” He must have no second thoughts that a co-prophet would bluff him. 
 
Like the old prophet, Satan may look trustworthy. As Paul warned, “And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” [2 Cor 11:14] Undoubtedly, he did appeared intentional to his lying, didn’t he? Looks and impressions can be deceiving. How many of us have been deceived to trust a decent looking guy with sweet words? 
 
Should an angel had appeared and spoke differently to the old prophet, he should have asked why the angel did not speak to him directly as previously. Does God channel his revelation to us via a third party? Let us be careful therefore to anybody who impose God’s revelation unto us when we have the same Spirit who lives in us as believers. 
 
Thus today, let’s not substitute the clear word of God with our ‘gut feel’. The gospel [or the revealed word of God as a whole] is the only truth we should rely on. [John 17:17, 2 Tim 3:16,17] Even Paul was very emphatic, saying, “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.”[Gal 1:8,9]

1 Kings 12:21-24 ESV 
21 When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 22 But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God: 23 “Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, 24 ‘Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your relatives the people of Israel. Every man return to his home, for this thing is from me.’” So they listened to the word of the Lord and went home again, according to the word of the Lord. 
 
LISTEN TO THE WORD 
Rehoboam was either oblivious or knew but minimize the declarations by God about the consequence of his father’s sins. Thus, he organized 180,000 chosen warriors to fight Jeroboam and restore the kingdom. Thus, God had revealed to the man of God Shemaiah, saying, “Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, ‘Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your relatives the people of Israel. Every man return to his home, for this thing is from me.’”[v.23,24] 
 
Rehoboam and his army did listen and obey. They went home according to God’s word. 
 
The word of God is perfect.[Psa 19:7] David acknowledges; 
“This God—his way is perfect; 
the word of the Lord proves true; 
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.”[Psa 18:30] 
 
Perhaps, the word of God was painful to Rehoboam to hear that the kingdom be divided. Truth hurts definitely. Nevertheless, they had to follow it. More disobedience or rebellion against God and His words would undoubtedly hurt the nation more. Enough is enough. 
 
We have the choice to make everyday. Either we honor and obey God’s word or not. Lest, we are carried by our senses, let us be reminded that; 
“The heart of man plans his way, 
but the Lord establishes his steps.”[Prov 16:9] 
 
Moreover, let us “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, 
and do not lean on your own understanding. 
In all your ways acknowledge him, 
and he will make straight your paths.”[Prov 3:5,6] 
 
Therefore, obedience to God’s word is the only means that could make us wise. Nothing else could do.

1 Kings 12:16-20 ESV

RESENTMENT. 
The king’s refusal to listen had provoked the people to rebel. Rehoboam’s folly made Israel to reject ,not only him, but also the entire dynasty of David. They rejected the descendants of Israel’s greatest king. It was the last straw at the camel’s back that had enraged them greatly. 
 
Resentment always leads to rebellion as a brewing lava in a volcano that sooner would erupt violently. This angry mob killed the taskmaster Adoram. This had prompted King Rehoboam to flee speedily to Jerusalem for safety. Let’s not forget that the wrath of man does not work the righteousness of God.[ Jas 1:19]. 
 
The small leak unattended became a huge rift of the kingdom. From this point on in the history of Israel, the name “Israel” and “Judah” referred to the ten northern tribes and the southern tribes of Benjamin and Judah, respectively. In short, the kingdom was destroyed by implosion. 
 
In a fallen world with imperfect people, we could hurt or be hurt by people. Resentments may brew and wreck relationships if not diffused in marriages, even in churches. Hence, Paul had admonished that we should be “bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” [Col 3:13] 
 
Even parents are warned not to provoke their children to anger.[Eph 6:4] That is, they should not exasperate them as Rehoboam did to the people. Generally, animals are timid to run away when humans are near. However, they would fight and bite when pushed in a corner. Timid humans are no different. 
 
Unlike Rehoboam, let’s be wise and understanding in our relationships. Let’s heed to James who warned, “Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”[Jas 3:13-16]

He was of the royal house in Edom. 15 For when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander of the army went up to bury the slain, he struck down every male in Edom 16 (for Joab and all Israel remained there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom). 17 But Hadad fled to Egypt, together with certain Edomites of his father's servants, Hadad still being a little child. 18 They set out from Midian and came to Paran and took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house and assigned him an allowance of food and gave him land. 19 And Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him in marriage the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen. 20 And the sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's house. 23 God also raised up as an adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his master Hadadezer king of Zobah. 24 And he gathered men about him and became leader of a marauding band, after the killing by David. And they went to Damascus and lived there and made him king in Damascus. 25 He was an adversary of Israel all the days of Solomon, doing harm as Hadad did. And he loathed Israel and reigned over Syria. 
 
THE ADVERSARIES. 
Hadad from Edom and Rezon from Syria were adversaries to King Solomon and his kingdom. They sought to disrupt the peace that Solomon had established in his kingdom at all times. 
 
God had ‘raised the adversary up.’ That is, God had permitted them to vex Solomon. Although, evils are tolerated in this world but they will be finally judged someday. As the psalmist wrote, “Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt.”[Psa 76:10] 
Hadad as a little child had escaped to Egypt, where he grew. Having found favor with Pharaoh, he was given by Pharaoh’s wife Tahpenes to become his wife. In other words, he had gained power in Pharaoh with time. The time came that David passed away and he requested to go back to his own country, Edom. 
 
Both Hadad and Rezon was kept at bay because of David. However, they surfaced after David’s demise. Like Hadad, our flesh would jump in when the Spirit is not in control. There is no vaccuum. The dynamics of this tug-of-war is articulated by Paul, “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.” [Gal 5:16-17] 
 
And as Rezon with his marauding band, conducted ambushes, our ‘adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.’[1 Pet 5:8] Let’s not be slack therefore, for he is lurking to jump at us at our unguarded moments. “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise.”[Eph 5:15]

1 Kings 11:9-13 ESV 
9 And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice 10 and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded. 11 Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant. 12 Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem that I have chosen.” 
 
THE ANGER OF GOD. 
How could God be angry with man when He is the God of love? Perhaps, this is the underlying reason why many presume they can go on sinful lifestyle and compromises like Solomon. There is no conflict between God’s holiness and love. As the stream flows along its banks so God’s love doesn’t rejoice in wrongdoing. [1 Cor 13:6] The stream is God’s love while the banks are God’s holiness. 
 
God isn’t venting His anger towards Solomon as somebody ruled by uncontrolled passion like the cartoon character, incredible hulk. He isn’t capricious, is He? Does not the act of God’s calling for Adam after he sinned a gesture of love and grace? And, does not God appear to Solomon twice to warn him? Sadly, like Adam, Solomon did not repent. He was hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.[Heb 3:13] 
 
God’s dealing with Solomon was conditioned by his obedience or not. Blessings are received when His statutes are followed. Otherwise, he will be judged. God’s holiness is as the unchanging heat of the sun that can either harden the clay or melt the wax. In other words, Solomon’s tender heart had changed so that the anger of God was inevitable. As Jesus said to Paul in a vision, “It is hard for you to kick against the pricks.”[Acts 9:5, Acts 6:14] 
 
Prov 15:10 says, “There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way; whoever hates reproof will die.” Solomon’s son would be stripped off the throne for his servant, who will rule the 10 tribes. If not for David’s sake, his son won’t be allowed to rule one tribe. The split was a sad result of Solomon’s sins. 
 
At the end of the day, God won his heart back. Solomon had realized his futility but the damage had been done. He wrote, “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.”[Ecc 12:13,14]

10 At the end of twenty years, in which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the Lord and the king's house, 11 and Hiram king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar and cypress timber and gold, as much as he desired, King Solomon gave to Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee. 12 But when Hiram came from Tyre to see the cities that Solomon had given him, they did not please him. 13 Therefore he said, “What kind of cities are these that you have given me, my brother?” So they are called the land of Cabul to this day. 14 Hiram had sent to the king 120 talents of gold. 
 
CABUL. 
The friendship of Solomon and Hiram had flourished. Twenty years had lapsed from the building of the temple and his house when Solomon gave Hiram the 20 cities in Galilee. Hiram, howvever, was not pleased, saying, “What kind of cities are these that you have given me, my brother?” This is the reason why the land was called Cabul, to mean, “good as nothing.” 
 
Hiram felt insulted. Did Solomon give him a squalid and impoverished cities? For whatever reason, it did not match his expectations. For the 120 talents of gold he gave, the 20 cities were as nothing. 
 
It’s understandable that mutuality should mark the relationship between kings, such as between Solomon and Hiram. But, our relationship with our king, the Lord Jesus Christ is of different level. Is it mutual when He died for us while we were sinners? [Rom 5:8] When God the Father did not spare His Son, but gave Him up for us all? [Rom 8:32] He had given and always does give His best for us. But, do we give our best to Him? Thus, we should love Him because He first loved us. [1 John 4:19] 
 
God does deserve our best, doesn’t He? As a show of profound gratefulness, we should strive to give our best, even our all, to Him. Anything lesser is an insult. God doesn’t need things. He owns everything. What He is after of are our motives. Everything else is as nothing to God without the love we have in our hearts.[see 1 Cor 13:1-3] Why did the widow with her two coins have given much than the others? 
 
May, like David, we won’t give to God that which costs as nothing. However, everything in and through us belongs to God in essence. Since we are bought with a prize, what is there in our lives that we can claim our own?[see 1 Cor 6:19,20] Nothing, plain and simple.

You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day. 25 Now therefore, O Lord, God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father what you have promised him, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.’ 26 Now therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you have spoken to your servant David my father. 
 
27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built! 28 Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O Lord my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you this day, 29 that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you have said, ‘My name shall be there,’ that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place. 30 And listen to the plea of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. And listen in heaven your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive. 
 
WILL GOD DWELL ON EARTH? 
The assembly of Israel had gathered around Solomon. Before the altar, he stood and spread out his hands toward heaven and burst into praise, worship and thanksgiving. God has been faithful to His covenant with his father David. There was a condition. His sons should pay close attention to their way, to walk before Him as David have walked before Him. And, there will not lack a man to sit before God on the throne of Israel. 
 
God’s initiative to enter into a covenant relationship with weak man is mindboggling, is it not? Why should God risk His honor with men? Did He not know beforehand that Solomon and the rest would fail to walk according to their father David someday? 
 
This puzzled Solomon. If heaven isn’t too big enough to contain God, how could He dwell on earth, needless to say, the temple? Yet, He did. His presence was in the temple, twenty four seven, where they can approach, worship and pray unto Him. This truth had humbled Solomon. 
 
Sadly, Solomon and the rest had failed. But, God will be true to his covenant with David. God will raise a son in the lineage of David to become the king on his throne forever. And, in the fulness of time[Gal 4:4], Jesus was born. He is the Emmanuel [God with us] for He was the Word who became flesh to dwell with men[John 1:14a] How near was God incarnate to His people? The apostle John recounted, “We have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”[John 1:14b] 
 
John added, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.”[1 John 1:1-3] 
 
And believe it or not, He is in each true believer’s heart today. Paul said, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”[1 Cor 6:19-20] 
 
Let’s resonate with Paul’s prayer therefore today, that is; 
“that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,” [Eph 3:16-17]

1 Kings 7:13-14 ESV 
13 And King Solomon sent and brought Hiram from Tyre. 14 He was the son of a widow of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in bronze. And he was full of wisdom, understanding, and skill for making any work in bronze. He came to King Solomon and did all his work. 
 
HIRAM, THE METALSMITH. 
There are three persons named Hiram in the bible. The first two are the King of Tyre[1 Kings 5:1] and the grandson of Benjamin.[1 Chron 8:3-5] 
 
But, another man named Hiram worked on Solomon’s temple as a metalsmith. He was from Tyre, as was his father, and his mother was from the tribe of Naphtali. “Hiram the metalsmith is referred to as Huram in 2 Chronicles 4:11 but called Huram-abi in 2 Chronicles 2:13 and 4:16. Abi means “master.”[ https://www.gotquestions.org/Huram-Hiram.html] 
 
He was full of wisdom, understanding, and skill for making any work in bronze. Like Hiram, it’s important to know our gifts and skills. Let’s be aware that all of us had at least a gift from the Spirit. Paul said, “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.” [1 Cor 12:4-6] Do you know what is your gift? 
 
Moreover, Hiram made himself available in times of need. And, he did an excellent job [see 1 Kings 7:15-58] Doesn’t God say, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.”[Ecc 9:10] Our time and opportunity may not come again. Let’s be “making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”[Eph 5:16,17] 
 
Identifying our giftedness and making ourselves available are what we need in effectively serving the Lord. Who you are [ with your gifts] is God’s gift to you. What we do with our lives [ in using our gifts] is our gift to Him.

1 Kings 7:13-14 ESV
13 And King Solomon sent and brought Hiram from Tyre. 14 He was the son of a widow of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in bronze. And he was full of wisdom, understanding, and skill for making any work in bronze. He came to King Solomon and did all his work.

HIRAM, THE METALSMITH.
There are three persons named Hiram in the bible. The first two are the King of Tyre[1 Kings 5:1] and the grandson of Benjamin.[1 Chron 8:3-5] 

But, another man named Hiram worked on Solomon’s temple as a metalsmith. He was from Tyre, as was his father, and his mother was from the tribe of Naphtali. “Hiram the metalsmith is referred to as Huram in 2 Chronicles 4:11 but called Huram-abi in 2 Chronicles 2:13 and 4:16. 1 Kings 6:11-13 ESV 
11 Now the word of the Lord came to Solomon, 12 “Concerning this house that you are building, if you will walk in my statutes and obey my rules and keep all my commandments and walk in them, then I will establish my word with you, which I spoke to David your father. 13 And I will dwell among the children of Israel and will not forsake my people, Israel.” 
 
GOD’S PRESENCE IN THE TEMPLE. 
After seven years of construction, the temple of Solomon was finished. In terms of beauty and cost, it was matchless. It was built with the choicest materials; hewn stones and cedar and cypress timbers overlaid with gold and silver. Its cost today may be estimated to 3 to 6 billion U.S. dollars. 
 
However, the true value of the temple is the presence of God, isn’t it? Similarly, heaven becomes meaningful because God is there. And the way to ensure God’s abiding presence is their obedience. God said, “Concerning this house that you are building, if you will walk in my statutes and obey my rules and keep all my commandments and walk in them, then I will establish my word with you, which I spoke to David your father. And I will dwell among the children of Israel and will not forsake my people Israel.” Failure to heed and walk according to God’s statutes, commandments and rules will cause God to forsake them. 
 
Today, having a beautiful church building where God’s people can gather for worship and fellowship is a good idea. It becomes wrong only when the people content themselves more with it and the activities in it more than God’s presence. Functions should be taken into consideration more than forms. 
 
As a church, in fact, Paul argued that it’s only the indwelling of God through the Spirit that makes it holy. He said, “Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.”[1 Cor 3:16,17] 
 
Let’s not forget that loving God being demonstrated by keeping His words matters most. Jesus said, “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” [ John 14:21,23]

A FAVOR FROM A FRIEND. 
King Solomon had recognized the friendship of Hiram with his father David. He knew that the king of Tyre was aware to David’s desire to build the temple. This, had prompted him to ask him the favor to supply the timber needed for the house of God. Hiram as the father’s friend became the son’s friend as well. And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty. 
 
A friend in need is a friend in deed. Hiram was available to supply what Solomon wanted. Isn’t availability one of the most important traits of a friend? Of what help is a friend who’s not there when you needed him most? 
 
Moreover, Solomon had acknowledged Hiram’s exceptional skill. He said, “there is no one among us who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians.” Hiram did not fail his expectations. True friends won’t settle to do for the second best in helping their friend, would they? 
 
And there was mutuality in their friendship. As Hiram supplied Solomon with all the timber of cedar and cypress that he desired, Solomon gave Hiram 20,000 cors of wheat as food for his household, and 20,000 cors of beaten oil. Solomon gave this to Hiram year by year. 
 
Today, let’s not forget that Jesus is known as a “friend of sinners” (Luke 7:34) What could He get from sinners? And, He has promised us, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Indeed, Jesus is truly the Friend who sticks closer than a brother[Prov 18:24] Thus, blessed are those who have Him as their Friend (John 15:14).

22 Solomon's provision for one day was thirty cors of fine flour and sixty cors of meal, 23 ten fat oxen, and twenty pasture-fed cattle, a hundred sheep, besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened fowl. 24 For he had dominion over all the region west of the Euphrates from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings west of the Euphrates. And he had peace on all sides around him. 25 And Judah and Israel lived in safety, from Dan even to Beersheba, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, all the days of Solomon. 26 Solomon also had 40,000 stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen. 27 And those officers supplied provisions for King Solomon, and for all who came to King Solomon's table, each one in his month. THE GLORY OF KING SOLOMON. 
The kingdom of Solomon had reached to its zenith politically, militarily and economically. “Judah and Israel were as many as the sand by the sea. They ate and drank and were happy. Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt. They brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.” [v.20,21] 
 
“For he had dominion over all the region west of the Euphrates from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kings west of the Euphrates. And he had peace on all sides around him. And Judah and Israel lived in safety, from Dan even to Beersheba, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, all the days of Solomon.” [v.24,25] 
 
He was most famous as the wisest king in all of the east including Egypt.[see v.30]. Thus, people of all nations came to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and from all the kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom. [v.34] 
 
Indeed, the glory and magnificence of King Solomon was undeniable that the Queen of Sheba came from the “ends of the earth” to see. Yet, Jesus, referring to himself, said, “Behold, something greater than Solomon is here.” [Matt 12:42b] John exclaimed, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” [John 1:14] 
 
And instead of chasing after Solomon’s fame and glory, we should glory in the way God had esteemed each one of us uniquely. Solomon was clothed in the best finery in the world and his kingdom flowed with gold and silver. He lived in great luxury. However Jesus says, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.”[Matt 6:28,29]. He sees the splendor of the lilies' beauty surpasses even Solomon's, though they do nothing to put it on. You and I are more glorious in the sight of God. Thus let us say, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”[Psa 139:14]

1 Kings 3:1-2 ESV 
Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt. He took Pharaoh's daughter and brought her into the city of David until he had finished building his own house and the house of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem. 2 The people were sacrificing at the high places, however, because no house had yet been built for the name of the Lord. 
 
PRAGMATISM. 
Taking Pharaoh’s daughter in a marriage alliance was no doubt a political measure of Solomon in order to strengthen his kingdom’s influence. A pragmatic move to foster relationships with the most powerful of his neighbors. But, should political advancements be considered even in violation to the laws of God? Was not Solomon charged by David to ‘walk in God’s ways and to keep his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses’?[1 Kings 2:3] 
 
“God had strictly forbidden his people to form alliances with heathenish women, lest they should lead their hearts away from him into idolatry. Let us hear the law: Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son; for they will turn away thy son from following me, etc. Exodus 34:16; Deuteronomy 7:3, Deuteronomy 7:4. Now Solomon acted in direct opposition to these laws; and perhaps in this alliance were sown those seeds of apostasy from God and goodness in which he so long lived, and in which he so awfully died.” [Adam Clarke] 
 
It’s not surprising that the world operates prejudiced towards pragmatism. In an environment of ‘survival to the fittest’, pragmatism thrives. As somebody said, “Hindi na ngayon panahon ni Kristo kung di sa mga listo.” What works at the moment may not be right. In other words, the end does not justify the means. Solomon may had found success in befriending the world. But, he estranged himself from God. As James said, “You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” [Jas 4:4] At the end of the day, he had to settle this with Jehovah. 
 
Doing what is right and pleasing to God must be our pursuit. It may not be practical. In fact, it may cause us to receive oppositions. However, let us remember that those who honor God , He will honor someday. [1 Sam 2:30]

36 Then the king sent and summoned Shimei and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and dwell there, and do not go out from there to any place whatever. 37 For on the day you go out and cross the brook Kidron, know for certain that you shall die. Your blood shall be on your own head.” 38 And Shimei said to the king, “What you say is good; as my lord the king has said, so will your servant do.” So Shimei lived in Jerusalem many days. 
 
39 But it happened at the end of three years that two of Shimei's servants ran away to Achish, son of Maacah, king of Gath. And when it was told Shimei, “Behold, your servants are in Gath,” 40 Shimei arose and saddled a donkey and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants. Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath. 41 And when Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and returned, 42 the king sent and summoned Shimei and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the Lord and solemnly warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you go out and go to any place whatever, you shall die’? And you said to me, ‘What you say is good; I will obey.’ 43 Why then have you not kept your oath to the Lord and the commandment with which I commanded you?” 44 The king also said to Shimei, “You know in your own heart all the harm that you did to David my father. So the Lord will bring back your harm on your own head. 45 But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever.” 46 Then the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck him down, and he died. 
 
PALABRA DE HONOR 
King Solomon had followed the words of his father David concerning Shimei, a relative of Saul who once cursed him. As an act of grace, David allowed him to build his house in Jerusalem. But, he had warned him sternly to stay foot always in Jerusalem. Otherwise, he will take his life if found guilty. Simei, in return, had commended the king’s word and promised to keep it. One mistake will be enough. There will be no second chances. 
 
But, after three years when Shimei’s two servants fled to king Achish at Gath, he pursued them there to seek them. He broke his vow. He violated the king’s word willfully. What were he thinking? that it was outdated? that the king had changed? that his case was an exception to the rule? 
 
The king’s edict is authoritative, final and irrevocable. His law must be respected at all times. How many times we play down the character of God as just and righteous. Thus, we say glibly, “God is love so He won’t inflict pain unto me because of my sin.” Yes, God is love. But he isn’t equivocal too. He is holy and righteous. He has pure eyes to see evil. [Hab 1:3] 
 
Shimei had taken lightly the words of the king. But, King Solomon did not. Thus, he commanded his general Benaiah to execute Shemei as proven guilty. Like Solomon, had not Jesus warned us to take seriously his words? He said, “The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.”[John 12:48] It is impossible for God to lie. [Heb 6:18]. Let us therefore respect His words. God is true to His words.[Matt 24:35] 
 
Let’s take note that Solomon had concluded in the book of Ecclesiastes, “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”[Ecc 12:31]. What God says really matters at the end.

When David's time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, 2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, 3 and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, 4 that the Lord may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’ 
 
SHOW YOURSELF A MAN. 
These "last words" of King David were especially significant. He charged Solomon, “Be strong, and show yourself a man.” Unlike David, Solomon grew up in the palace. David had fought ferocious animals as a shepherd, even killed a giant as a young lad. But, Solomon did not. 
 
What does it take for Solomon to become the man of God? He must be a man of courage.. And, this is qualified by tests and trials. A typhoon does not make a building strong, does it? It is proven strong if it stands after the storm. Thus “If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.” [Prov 24:10] As James articulated, “ Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” [Jas 1:2-4] 
 
What should he be courageous about? Solomon has to ‘keep the charge of the Lord his God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses. David's reference to "The Law of Moses," is in the very terminology of Deuteronomy 18:17-20. The conviction to uphold the truth at all cost is a demonstration of manliness in God. 
 
Lastly, there was a corresponding promise. Should David’s sons ‘walk before God in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, David shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’ To preserve His kingship, Solomon has to uphold the truth in his heart faithfully.

So he arose and went and took hold of the horns of the altar. 51 Then it was told Solomon, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, for behold, he has laid hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’” 52 And Solomon said, “If he will show himself a worthy man, not one of his hairs shall fall to the earth, but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.” 53 So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and paid homage to King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.” 
 
FEAR BRINGS TORMENT. 
When Adonijah knew that Solomon was anointed king, he trembled in fear. Was not his fear re-enforced upon knowing that ‘all the guests of Adonijah trembled and rose, and each went his own way.’[v.49] The loyalty of his people was proven lacking in times of the crucible. Alone and deserted, he ‘laid hold of the horns of the altar’ for safety.

A similar reaction King Saul did earlier. “When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits.”[1 Sam 13:6] In panic , Saul offered the burnt sacrifice forbidden for him to do. 
 
Fear is felt when we’re vulnerable and threatened by a coming danger we can’t handle, especially death. While Adonijah took refuge at the horn of the altar, we doubt whether he was sincerely repentant and broken. Many people are fearful to the consequence of their sins more than their respect [reverential fear] to the Living and Righteous God. 
 
God should be feared. However, He forgives and loves the truly repentant sinner. [2 Cor 7:10] There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. [Rom 8:1] Hence, to every true believer, ‘there is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.’ [1 John 4:18]
