Galatians 4:28-31 ESV 
28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.

CHILDREN OF PROMISE. 
 
True believers at Galatia are children of promise like Isaac. But, they’re not devoid of a conflict. Thus Paul, had brought the tension of Abraham’s home. In Gen 21:9-10, “But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, laughing. So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son, for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.” Thus, Abraham drove away Hagar and Ishmael. Hence, Isaac grew without Ishmael to share as heir of Abraham. Similarly, believers must stand to their status – free children. 
 
Thus Paul had enjoined us to live as free. He said, “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.”[Rom 6:6-11] 
 
Thus today, we must live up to our label as children of promise. We are free to live a righteous life. This can be done by considering ourselves as dead to sin but alive to God. In Rom 12:1-2, Paul said this in another way, that is, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” 
 
The freedom of the children of promise is that they have the power to live the righteous life.

CHRIST BE FORMED IN YOU. 
 
Paul can be hard to the Galatians because he loved them dearly. He endeared them as his ‘little children’ 
It is the mother who loves his children could earn the right to reprove and correct them. In fact, Paul likened himself to a laboring mother, full of anguish within. He was deeply pained for their departure from a life of blessedness. 
 
What has caused Paul to have such deep concern for them? 
 
Paul had one goal. That is, the gospel of the grace of God. He resolved, saying, “But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”[Acts 20:24] Again, he expressed this to the Colossians, “Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”[Col 1:28,29] 
 
Nothing satisfies Paul aside from seeing the believers maturing in Christ. Are you and I have the same concern with Paul in our lives and ministry? We could be like the Galatians if we’re not discerning. Thus Paul has warned, “But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” [2 Cor 11:3] The father of lies could disguise as an angel of light. [2 Cor 11:14]. A little leaven that he sows could affect the whole lump. Therefore, let us not be ignorant to his devices. [2 Cor 2:11]

You did me no wrong. 13 You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first, 14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus.

Wala kayong ginawang masama sa akin. 13 Nalalaman ninyo na dahil sa karamdaman ng katawan ay una kong ipinangaral sa inyo ang ebanghelyo. 14 Bagaman ang aking kalagayan ay naging isang pagsubok sa inyo, hindi ninyo ako hinamak o kinasuklaman kundi tinanggap na gaya sa isang anghel ng Diyos, gaya ni Cristo Jesus. 
 
LIKE AN ANGEL OF GOD. 
Paul was sick when he first met the Galatians. Was it a chronic illness? . In 2 Cor 12, he describes "thorn in the flesh" allowed by God to keep him from becoming conceited. This perhaps was a form of physical illness. Some even suggested that it was a visual impairment. Or, perhaps it was simply a disease that came and then went away. We really don't know. 
 
At any rate, he referred his condition as a trial or burden for the Galatians. Perhaps he either needed an urgent medical care from them or he was just an annoyance. Again, we have no idea. Certainly, it made him look weak in the eyes of the Galatians. It’s easy for people to associate illnes with weakness. Or, they may assumed illness to be the punishment of God or the gods for great wrongdoing. A mark of a person’s rejection from the gods. 
 
Despite of this, they received Paul as if he was an angel or Christ Himself. They valued his message about faith in Jesus so that they refused to allow his illness to keep them from honoring him. If the messenger can be trusted, the message is received. Definitely, Paul’s life had exuded the beauty of Christ. Just a note. Paul and Barnabas were mistaken to be gods when they in Lystra [see Acts 14:11-13] 
 
To them, Paul had no ambiguity in declaring the gospel, either by his lips or life. He strongly said, “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.”[Gal 1:8,9] 
 
He was so sure that his message is consistent to his manner. He testified before the Thessalonians, saying, “our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.”[1 Thess 1:5] Even to the Corinthians, he said, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.”[1 Cor 11:1] 
 
How about us? Are our words consistent with our walk? Our talks with our testimonies? Our conduct with our claims? How do people perceive us when we talk with them? As an angel of God or a fallen angel?

1 Kings 2:41-46 ESV 
41 Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel. 42 Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 43 He walked in all the way of Asa his father. He did not turn aside from it, doing what was right in the sight of the Lord. Yet the high places were not taken away, and the people still sacrificed and made offerings on the high places. 44 Jehoshaphat also made peace with the king of Israel. 
 
45 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his might that he showed, and how he warred, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 46 And from the land he exterminated the remnant of the male cult prostitutes who remained in the days of his father Asa. 
 
A GODLY LEGACY 
While the northern kingdom was in turmoil, the southern kingdom Asa was a good king and Jehoshaphat his son followed his footsteps and did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.” The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. He did not seek the Baals, 4 but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, and not according to the practices of Israel. 5 Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor.”[2 Chron 17:3-5] 
 
As summarized by author, D. Guzik, who said, “The writer of 1 Kings actually summarized many of the remarkable accomplishments of Jehoshaphat, who was one of the better kings of Judah. From 2 Chronicles we learn many of Jehoshaphat’s other accomplishments. 
 
· He sent teachers of God’s Word out to his entire kingdom (2 Chronicles 17:7-10). “By this little band of princes, Levites and priests, sixteen in all, Jehoshaphat did more toward impressing the surrounding nations with a sense of his power than the largest and best-equipped standing army could have secured to him.” (Knapp) 
· He established a permanent military garrison along the northern frontier (2 Chronicles 17:1-2, 12). 
· He trained and equipped a sizeable army (2 Chronicles 17:14-19) that was able to quell a Transjordan invasion (2 Chronicles 20:1-30). 
· He placed Edom under Judean control, controlling an important caravan route to the south (2 Kings 3:8-27; 2 Chronicles 20:36). 
· God blessed his reign so much that the fear of the Lord came upon neighboring nations so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 17:10). 
· Jehoshaphat was also an able administrator, implementing judicial reforms (2 Chronicles 19:5-11) and religious reforms (2 Chronicles 17:3-9). 
· Jehoshaphat was also the king connected to the famous incident when the army of Judah saw a great victory won as the Levites led the battle with praise (2 Chronicles 20:15-23).” 
 
Stability was the order his reign. More than his father did, Jehoshaphat ‘exterminated the remnant of the male cult prostitutes who remained in the days of his father Asa.’ Yet the high places were not taken away, and the people still sacrificed and made offerings on the high places. Perhaps, these high places were consecrated for God as opposed to idolatrous practices. For we read in 2 Chron 17:6, “His heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord. And furthermore, he took the high places and the Asherim out of Judah.” Commentator Adam Clarke wrote, “Allowing that the text is right in 2 Chronicles the two places may be easily recognized. There were two kinds of high places in the land: 1. Those used for idolatrous purposes. 2. Those that were consecrated to God, and were used before the temple was built. The former he did take away, the latter he did not.” 
 
Forty years of Asa’s reign and twenty five years of Jehoshaphat’s reign were marked of blessings at the southern kingdom. Indeed, ‘righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.’ [Prov 14:34] May by God’s grace , we will continue to prolifirate a godly legacy in our homes, churches and nations.

1 Kings 21:5-15 ESV 
5 But Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him, “Why is your spirit so vexed that you eat no food?” 6 And he said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money, or else, if it please you, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ And he answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’” 7 And Jezebel his wife said to him, “Do you now govern Israel? Arise and eat bread and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.” 
 
8 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name and sealed them with his seal, and she sent the letters to the elders and the leaders who lived with Naboth in his city. 9 And she wrote in the letters, “Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people. 10 And set two worthless men opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying, ‘You have cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.” 11 And the men of his city, the elders and the leaders who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters that she had sent to them, 12 they proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people. 13 And the two worthless men came in and sat opposite him. And the worthless men brought a charge against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned; he is dead.” 
 
15 As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money, for Naboth is not alive, but dead.” 16 And as soon as Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it. 
 
GIVE NO OPPORTUNITY TO THE DEVIL. 
Jezebel is a type of the devil. As the devil influenced Eve, so she influenced Ahab. In fact, she devised a wicked plan for Ahab to get what he wanted. She masterminded to accuse Naboth falsely that he cursed God and the king, which had led to his stoning to death. Definitely, she reflected her father, the devil, who is the father of lies and death. [John 8:44] 
 
An angry heart like Ahab is Satan’s workshop. A man filled with passion is an easy prey for the devil’s manipulation. Anger is the key that open the flood gates for the evil one to overwhelm him. That is why Paul had admonished us to dissipate anger as soon as possible. He said, “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.”[ Eph 4:26,27] 
 
Let us not be ignorant to the devil’s devices. Therefore, “be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”[1 Pet 5:8] He would jump at us during our weakest moment. James has articulated this moment, saying, “What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel.”[Jas 4:1-2b] 
 
Indeed, Naboth got what he always wanted. However, he was oblivious that Satan through Jezebel had captured his heart first. He was locked in his own prison without knowing it. He saw the lush vegetable garden beside his palace. But, he did not see the weeds of evil consuming his heart. 
 
Today, let’s clear the walls of our hearts from any buttresses of anger and bitterness. Lest, the devil can make these as foothold to climb over and ruin our souls. Let’s confess and be cleansed from all these unrighteous nesses. [1 John 1:9]

21.146 | Give No Opportunity To The Devil | 1 Kings 21:5-15 | God's word for Today w Pastor Sinon

1 Kings 20:35-43 ESV 
35 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow at the command of the Lord, “Strike me, please.” But the man refused to strike him. 36 Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as you have gone from me, a lion shall strike you down.” And as soon as he had departed from him, a lion met him and struck him down. 37 Then he found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” And the man struck him—struck him and wounded him. 38 So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the way, disguising himself with a bandage over his eyes. 39 And as the king passed, he cried to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle, and behold, a soldier turned and brought a man to me and said, ‘Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’ 40 And as your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself have decided it.” 41 Then he hurried to take the bandage away from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. 42 And he said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall be for his life, and your people for his people.’” 43 And the king of Israel went to his house vexed and sullen and came to Samaria. 
 
VEXED AND SULLEN. 
After Ahab had released Benhadad, he was confronted by one of the prophets in a scenario reminiscent to Saul. Saul was rebuked by Samuel because he spared an enemy, Agag, who was suppose to die. Ahab may had appeared noble to show mercy to Benhadad. But, in the eyes of God, he was naïve and presumptuous. Freeing an enemy was inviting more trouble in the future 
 
He accused Elijah in the past as the troubler of Israel. But, who is the real troubler of Israel? Whether he admitted it or not, Ahab was and had always been the troubler. Living in sin may give temporary pleasures but their shadows are haunting. The consequences of sin are severe than one could think. 
 
Ahab, like Achan, might had thought about the restored riches plus the ‘bazaars in Damascus’[v.32] promised by Benhadad. They were material blessings to enticing to ignore. But, God was ignored. The consequence for this would be painful. The Lord rebuked him through the prophet, saying, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall be for his life, and your people for his people.’” Indeed, what happened to him is of no surprise for abandoning God for idols was courting for a disaster. 
 
Ahab’s compromises had caused a life mixed-up. He wanted to kill Elijah, a godly prophet but called Benhadad, the enemy his brother[see v.32]. Despite to his failings in the past, God gave him victory at Aphek . This goodness of the Lord shown in his life could have led him unto repentance.[Rom 2:4] But, he remained stubborn. He who was full of self to not hear God. He ignored history [Achan, King Saul] and was bound to repeat it. 
 
Upon hearing God’s judgment upon him, he became vexed and sullen. Not surprising. (There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited. He acted very abominably in going after idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the Lord cast out before the people of Israel.) [1 Kings 21:25,26]

1 Kings 20:35-43 ESV
35 And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow at the command of the Lord, “Strike me, please.” But the man refused to strike him. 36 Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, behold, as soon as you have gone from me, a lion shall strike you down.” And as soon as he had departed from him, a lion met him and struck him down. 37 Then he found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” And the man struck him—struck him and wounded him. 38 So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the way, disguising himself with a bandage over his eyes. 39 And as the king passed, he cried to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle, and behold, a soldier turned and brought a man to me and said, ‘Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’ 40 And as your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel

1 Kings 20:30-34 ESV 
Ben-hadad also fled and entered an inner chamber in the city. 31 And his servants said to him, “Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Let us put sackcloth around our waists and ropes on our heads and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life.” 32 So they tied sackcloth around their waists and put ropes on their heads and went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-hadad says, ‘Please, let me live.’” And he said, “Does he still live? He is my brother.” 33 Now the men were watching for a sign, and they quickly took it up from him and said, “Yes, your brother Ben-hadad.” Then he said, “Go and bring him.” Then Ben-hadad came out to him, and he caused him to come up into the chariot. 34 And Ben-hadad said to him, “The cities that my father took from your father I will restore, and you may establish bazaars for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” And Ahab said, “I will let you go on these terms.” So he made a covenant with him and let him go. 
 
MERCY. 
The haughty king Benhadad, who was taunting earlier against Ahab, had entered into a room like a dog with tail tucked under with his servants. Indeed, he who exalts himself will be humbled. And in a moment, his servants said, “Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Let us put sackcloth around our waists and ropes on our heads and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life.” And, they did. 
 
How did they know? Having been caught in between the devil and the deep blue sea, they tried their luck. And, it was the reputation of mercy to the kings of Israel that prompted them to do so. And, they tried their luck. When Ahab said, “Does he still live? He is my brother.” they confirmed their guess. Ahab let him go up into is chariot, made a covenant with him and let him go. This favor granted by Ahab had removed their animosity. But, God wasn’t pleased. 
 
However, we can learn the dynamics of showing mercy here. As sinners, we are worthy of judgment. And, we couldn’t appeal in any other basis before God, except for mercy. There is no other way. As Prov 28:13 says; 
“Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, 
but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” 
 
Where mercy is demonstrated, the implementation of punishment is withdrawn. And, God won’t deal us according to our sins. As Paul had declared, “he[God] saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”[Titus 3:5,6] 
 
Let’s not forget that everyday we continue to live because of His continual mercies. 
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; 
his mercies never come to an end; 
23 they are new every morning; 
great is your faithfulness.”[Lam 3:22-23]

1 Kings 20:23-30 ESV 
23 And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills, and so they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. 24 And do this: remove the kings, each from his post, and put commanders in their places, 25 and muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.” And he listened to their voice and did so. 
 
26 In the spring, Ben-hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel. 27 And the people of Israel were mustered and were provisioned and went against them. The people of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, but the Syrians filled the country. 28 And a man of God came near and said to the king of Israel, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lord is a god of the hills but he is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will give all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’” 29 And they encamped opposite one another seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle was joined. And the people of Israel struck down of the Syrians 100,000 foot soldiers in one day. 30 And the rest fled into the city of Aphek, and the wall fell upon 27,000 men who were left. 
 
TWO LITTLE FLOCKS. 
The Syrians were planning a counter-attack against Israel. They were convinced that Israel has gods of the hills but not in the valleys. Thus, they consolidated their armies. This was a sound military strategy for horses could better function in the plains. It was a faulty theology, however, for the true God isn’t bound by geography. Like the Syrians, people today had beliefs and hopes today anchored upon mere superstitions. 
 
God did step in through the man of God, who said to the king of Israel, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lord is a god of the hills but he is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will give all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’” Was it to prove the Syrians wrong, first and foremost? No! That the king and the nation of Israel may know that Jehovah is the Lord! God’s name was at stake more than the nation of Israel. 
 
God does what He does for His glory. Anything else He uses are just His instruments. It doesn’t matter before Him for He can either use either with many or few. The people of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats before the multitude of Syrians looked pathetic for seven days. But, during their confrontation at the seventh day, this two little flocks with God had struck down 100,000 Syrians and the 7,00 who fled died under a collapsed wall. Clearly, this was not short of a miracle. 
 
Regarding God’s zeal for His glory, let’s be reminded to the words of Paul. He said, “God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” [1 Cor 1:29-31]

1 Kings 20:13-21 ESV 
13 And behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel and said, “Thus says the Lord, Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will give it into your hand this day, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” 14 And Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “Thus says the Lord, By the servants of the governors of the districts.” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.” 15 Then he mustered the servants of the governors of the districts, and they were 232. And after them he mustered all the people of Israel, seven thousand. 
 
16 And they went out at noon, while Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the booths, he and the thirty-two kings who helped him. 17 The servants of the governors of the districts went out first. And Ben-hadad sent out scouts, and they reported to him, “Men are coming out from Samaria.” 18 He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive. Or if they have come out for war, take them alive.” 
 
19 So these went out of the city, the servants of the governors of the districts and the army that followed them. 20 And each struck down his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them, but Ben-hadad king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen. 21 And the king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and struck the Syrians with a great blow. 
 
OBEDIENCE BRINGS BLESSING. 
The angry Benhadad with 32 other kings had prepared to attack Israel. In the midst of this crisis, an unnamed prophet approached Ahab. He was a blessing from God dropped into Ahab’s lap in the nick of time. Let’s take notice that Elijah was mistaken to think he was the only one left. The unnamed prophet’s abrupt appearance means that the focus is God alone. 
 
His pronouncement of victory was purely an act of grace to the wicked king. He did not expect this so that he asked, “By whom?” Perhaps he either felt unworthy or thinking another champion or deliverer to help them. But, not himself. When the prophet said, “You”, how did he respond? 
 
Ahab believed the word of the prophet wholeheartedly. As was told by the prophet, Ahab ‘mustered the servants of the governors of the districts, and they were 232. And after them he mustered all the people of Israel, seven thousand.’ [v.15,16] 
 
He ‘struck the Syrians with a great blow’ according the word of the Lord when Benhadad and the other 32 kings were drunk. Was this a coincidental or incedental? Definitely, the God who commanded him has the control of the events. Despite of who Ahab was, his obedience had led to victory. Blessings comes by obedience. Definitely, it was not that Ahab was great. As he yielded to God, God did use him as instrument for His glory. All credits are to God.

1 Kings 20:1-12 ESV 
Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his army together. Thirty-two kings were with him, and horses and chariots. And he went up and closed in on Samaria and fought against it. 2 And he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him, “Thus says Ben-hadad: 3 ‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your best wives and children also are mine.’” 4 And the king of Israel answered, “As you say, my lord, O king, I am yours, and all that I have.” 5 The messengers came again and said, “Thus says Ben-hadad: ‘I sent to you, saying, “Deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children.” 6 Nevertheless I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants and lay hands on whatever pleases you and take it away.’” 
7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land and said, “Mark, now, and see how this man is seeking trouble, for he sent to me for my wives and my children, and for my silver and my gold, and I did not refuse him.” 8 And all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen or consent.” 9 So he said to the messengers of Ben-hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you first demanded of your servant I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” And the messengers departed and brought him word again. 10 Ben-hadad sent to him and said, “The gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me.” 11 And the king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘Let not him who straps on his armor boast himself as he who takes it off.’” 12 When Ben-hadad heard this message as he was drinking with the kings in the booths, he said to his men, “Take your positions.” And they took their positions against the city. 
 
THE THREAT. 
Benhadad, king of Aram, headed a powerful alliance with 32 other kings to put pressure to Israel. Having wanted to make Israel a vassal state, he demanded Asa to deliver to him his treasures, wives and children. Ahab was agreeable at first. But, Benhadad had sent his messengers again to demand for more. Nothing could appease a greedy oppressor. Benhadad’s demand was extensive [everything you value]. Intrusive [search your palace] and immediate[by tomorrow] 
 
This caused Ahab to consult his elders, who advised him not to give in to his demands. This infuriated King Benhadad so that he threatened and taunted them. 
 
Ahab was a wicked king. But, his decision to ask counsel from the elders was commendable. Is the non-mention of Jezebel mean that he did not want her to involve? Perhaps. “In an abundance of counselors there is safety.”[Prov 11:14] A wicked leader like Ahab may get the right decision if he listens to godly counselors. On the other hand, a good king may make a terrible decision if he listens to ungodly counselors. 
 
Perhaps, you are threatened at your work places to give in to moral compromises. You might think the compromise is minuscule. But, the oppressor’s greed is insatiable as a tiger that had tasted blood. This man will demand more from you as the tiger will not satisfy unless he devours the prey. Thus, let’s nip it at the bud before it blossoms. 
 
Secondly, in times of pressure, we need a godly community for godly counsel. Our ability to make right decisions could be affected by fear or panic. Definitely, God can use the perspective of others to broaden our minds.

21.140 | The Threat | 1 Kings 20:1-12 | God’s Word for Today With Pastor Nazario Sinon

1 Kings 19:19-21 ESV 
 
19 So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” 21 And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him. 
 
THE MANTLE 
Elijah cast his mantle upon Elisha. According to Adam Clarke, “The mantle, or pallium, was the peculiar garb of the prophet, as we may learn from Zechariah 13:4; and this was probably made of skin dressed with the hair on. See also 2 Kings 1:8.” The act of Elijah casting his mantle to Elisha was a symbol of ushering him into the prophetic calling. Elijah did as God had told him for the calling should be always coming from God. If not for God’s revelation, Elijah have no way of knowing. 
 
Like Samuel, we have the tendency to look at the external qualities. As he assessed Jesse’s sons starting from the eldest, he thought each guy was worth anointing to be the next king. David was ruled out by his father but he was God’s choice. He looked at the heart. 
 
Elisha was diligent in his trade when God called him. "Elisha is found not in his study, but in the field: not with a book in his hand, but the plough" (Hall). Diligence or faithfulness precedes God’s calling. Jesus declared this principle, saying, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.”[Luke 16:10] Prov 22;29 even says; 
“Do you see a man skillful in his work? 
He will stand before kings; 
he will not stand before obscure men.” 
Simply said, God calls and uses people who are active and productive. 
 
The demand was great and he counted the cost. Most probably, he was a man of wealth but had given up willingly and freely everything to follow God’s call. He took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. He made a statement that for him there was no turning back. 
 
Peter and the others did the same. When Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him.”[Matt 4:19,20] God deserves our all. Thus, we must be willing to let go anything should He asks us to. However, God are calling also tentmaking missionaries who may engage in other jobs in order to support their full timework in God.

1 Kings 19:13-18 ESV 
13 And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” 15 And the LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. 16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. 17 And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. 18 Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.” 
 
AN UNWORTHY VESSEL. 
After the display of power, Elijah wrapped his face with cloak as an act of contrition. Spurgeon said, “it is a great thing when a sinner is willing to wrap his face when he is confounded, and say, ‘I cannot defend my course; I am guilty.’ We know that if at our judgment-seat a man pleads guilty, he is punished; but at the judgment-seat of the gospel whoever pleads guilty is forgiven. Wrap your face.” 
 
And, as God asked the same question, “What are you doing here Elijah?” Elijah blurted the same response. Similarly, Jesus asked the same question to backsliding Peter, “Do you love me?” for three times. And his responses were all the same. That he loved Jesus honestly as a brother. 
 
 
God puts premium to an honest yet humble heart. Both Elijah and Peter wouldn’t hide the truth. The good thing however was that they had perceived God again rightly. Elijah saw God at Mount Horeb while Peter at the shore of Galilee. 
 
Amazingly, in their acknowledgment of failings, God commissioned them. Elijah had to go and anoint Hazael and Nimshi as new kings of Syria and Israel, respectively. He had to anoint Elisha to replace him as well. What an honor for him to end his ministry in such a fashion. In the case of Peter, he was commissioned by the Lord to go and feed the sheep of God. 
 
Strange as it is, God’s treatment for His despaired soldier is not to put him out of the fight. Instead, He thrusted them into his vineyard, as instruments of blessing. Trust and empowerment are the cures to the wounded soul. Definitely, the feeling of being trusted by no other than God Himself could boast our confidence. For many times, our problem is not our sense of inadequacy. It is our lack of trust that God could use unworthy vessels for His glory, isn’t it? It’s not about us but God always. 
 
Paul had clearly emphasized that God uses the insignificant. He said, “For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.”[1 Cor 1:26-29] 
 
God uses unworthy vessels as channel for His glory.

THE ANGEL’S TOUCH. 
Being dead tired and exhausted, Elijah had fallen asleep under the broom tree. And suddenly, he was awaken by a touch of the angel from the Lord, “Arise and eat.” Just beside his head was a ‘cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water’ provided. It was a breakfast in bed. He ate and drank and sleep again. This time it was a sleep with full stomach. 
 
Elijah wished to die but the angel let him live. Suddenly, he appeared to feed him. I am thankful that God answers our prayers the other way around at times. In desperation, we are prompted to pray. And, our prayers mostly are just ventilations of our frustrations and disappointments. Thankfully, God, our Father, does show His gentleness for He knows that we are made of dust. Indeed, “a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory.” [Matt 12:42] 
 
Elijah had excluded God from his equation but God did not. He ran away but God outran him. For God’s plan was not yet through in his life. He is leading him back to his feet and run for God, not for himself. How? He fed and let him sleep and awaken him to eat once more. For, Elijah has a great journey to Mt. Horeb [Sinai], the mount of God. 
 
In times of our discouragements, God wants us to go where He is. He wants us to “lift up our eyes to the hills, from where does our help come.”[Psa 121:8]. Let us resolve to say with the psalmist, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”[Psa 42:11]

1 Kings 18:41-46 ESV 
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.” 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees. 43 And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times. 44 And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man's hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” 45 And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. 46 And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and he gathered up his garment and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. 
 
SOUND BEFORE SIGHT. 
Under normal circumstances, the flashes of lightning do come before we hear a crushing thunder, is it not? Thank God, for we have a time to prepare, that is, to crouch and cover our ears. However, in the economy of faith, we must hear and believe first the sound[the wordof God] before we would see it happens [experience]. 
 
Hence, faith is just believing that what God says is true regardless of the circumstances. Elijah had heard the sound of rain from God in a cloudless day. This prompted him to command his servant to watch for the clouds is coming soon. His faith was contagious. Though the servant had found none, he did not tire himself to climb up and down the mountain peak to view towards the sea many times. It was at the seventh time that he saw a far distant cloud as big as his fist. 
 
In God, to hear is to see. That is, to hear and believe His word precedes our witness that it’s true. In a lot of cases, to ask for a sign first is showing our doubt, isn’t it. Jesus said to Thomas who asked for a sign, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”[John 20:28] How many times we are like Thomas more than like Elijah? 
 
May today, we will have a paradigm shift of faith. Let His word govern our spiritual ears. Like the boy Samuel, we may readily say, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”[1 Sam 3:10] Like David, we may have the resolve to say; 
“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord 
in the land of the living!”[Psa 27:13] 
 
Sound before sight. That is, to hear God’s word is to see. May as we wake up everyday, we will seek and listen attentively to His words, that are, to what He says and promises. Then, as we obey, we will see His words have proven real in and through our jobs, relationships and ministries.

And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.” 34 And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. THE LORD, HE IS GOD. 
While Baal was silent, God had won the reverence of the people in a highly spectacular fashion. First, Elijah asked them to come closer to him. There are just just acts of God that are too precious to miss. They were so distant to God for having been told to embrace Baal. Like Elijah, let us usher people towards knowing God. 
 
Elijah then did repair the destroyed altar of the Lord. An altar neglected over the years had surely worn and broken. Have we neglected our personal worship with God so that we need to restore it? Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name,”[v.31] This must be a reminder to all of them that as one covenant people they should worship the only true God. 
 
And, Elijah did what was unexpected. What did the people think when he made troughs around the altar and poured water unto the pieces of wood and bullock for three times? He poured water unto the sacrifice before he prayed for the Lord to send the fire. The Lord does not need our help through manipulations, cutting corners and trickeries, does He? Thus, when the people had encountered God firsthand, so close and personal, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.” 
 
Let God be God. As His servants like Elijah, our role is to obey God, nothing more, nothing less and nothing else. As a leaven to the dough, we should neither intervene nor introduce anything coming from the flesh, no matter how noble is it. God does not need neither our opinions nor suggestions, does He. 
 
Thus, in presenting the gospel, Paul had said, “And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” [1 Cor 2:1-5] 
 
Since the Lord is the God, He must be lifted up as the God in all areas of our life and ministry, nothing more, nothing less and nothing else.

If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word. 22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal's prophets are 450 men. 23 Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. SILENCE. 
In the eyes of man, the contest at Mt. Carmel was lopsided. How can one man stand against the 400 prophets of Baal and 450 prophets of Asherah combined? But, in the eyes of God, it was nothing. Elijah with Yahweh is more than conqueror. His fight is the Lord’s. 
 
What they thought could be a laudable victory for the prophets has made them a laughing stock. Remember, Baal for them was the god of fire. As they set the bull sacrifice at the altar, they cried from morning to to noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made. Silence. And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention. And still, silence. 
 
Idols are nothing before God. Thus, Elijah had made fun for them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” However, this does not warrant us to be disrespectful to idol worshipers. Peter has warned us, “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”[1 Pet 3:15] 
 
The psalmist had articulated the futility of trusting idols, as he wrote; 
‘Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, 
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! 
Why should the nations say, 
“Where is their God?” 
Our God is in the heavens; 
he does all that he pleases. 
Their idols are silver and gold, 
the work of human hands. 
They have mouths, but do not speak; 
eyes, but do not see. 
They have ears, but do not hear; 
noses, but do not smell. 
They have hands, but do not feel; 
feet, but do not walk; 
and they do not make a sound in their throat. 
Those who make them become like them; 
so do all who trust in them. 
[Psa 115:1-9] 
 
Worshiping idols will make us like them – nothing before God. It’s futility to put our trust on nothing. Conversely, it’s the wisest to put our whole trust upon the Lord Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God.

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah. 
 
17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?” 18 And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father's house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals. 19 Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table.” 
 
THE REAL TROUBLE. 
The famine became severe. Thus he did explorations to find food and water for his animals all over the land. He met Elijah along the way for God had appointed the meeting.[see verse 1] 
 
He immediately accused Elijah and held him responsible for the ongoing famine. That, Elijah was the troubler of Israel and not himself. A person could be hardened with sin as Ahab to become unconscionable. What a sad state of his heart to spiral down from accepting sin to exalting it. He made idol temples and altars in his kingdom. 
 
Most probably, he took for granted the word of God through Elijah, that is, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” [1 Kings 17:1] A person who continues to reject God’s word is making his heart impermeable. The wall of his heart is thickened and lose its sensitivity. 
 
Indeed, the practice of sinning results to illusionment. It did not cross in Ahab’s mind that he was the problem. Definitely, he didn’t see wrong with his marriage with Jezebel and his worship to idols, did he? A person who sees the mote in others’ eyes but can’t see the beam before his eyes is an exaggeration Jesus had said. Sadly, this pictures the blinding effect of a deceived heart. A hardened heart makes his eyes blind to the realities. 
 
My pastor friend said one time, “Karamihan as atin nagsasabi na ang problema sa mundo ay komunismo, capitalismo, pasisismo at socialismo.Hindi ba natin alam na ang problema sa mundo ay ‘tayo mismo’?” Ahab was in a big trouble for having been oblivious that he was the cause of trouble. 
 
Today, let’s sport a tender heart before the Lord. Let us not be deceived by the lures of sin. May we will be able to see our hearts as God sees it. [see Psa 139:23,24]

1 Kings 18:1-6 ESV 
After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.” 2 So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly, 4 and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.” 6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself. 
 
DIPLOMACY AND SMARTNESS. 
Should God can use a confrontative prophet Elijah, He can use a diplomatic prophet Obadiah. Obadiah had served Ahab inside the palace. However, it does not mean that He had compromised. God may call us uniquely in His vineyard. Elijah was no better than Obadiah, vice-versa. There should be no comparing as Paul had written, that is “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God's fellow workers.”[1 Cor 3:-9a] 
 
How did he serve God in the courts of Ahab? 
 
He took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water. Unlike Elijah who directly and openly rebuked Ahab, he indirectly and secretly use Ahab’s power and resources for God’s glory. Where did he get the bread and water to feed the one hundred prophets hiding in the caves? Most probably, he risked to channel the king’s resources to support God’s spokesmen. 
 
Obadiah wasn’t coward but wise. God had called him in his position uniquely as was Daniel and his three friends before Nebuchadnezzar. Let’s not forget that Jesus has said to his disciples, “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”[Matthew 10:16] In difficult times, we must work harmlessly and wisely for the advancement of God’s kingdom like Daniel and his friends. 
 
Honey hunters do try not to disturb the bee colony as much as possible in getting the honeycomb. Similarly, we can be us stealthy as possible, avoiding unnecessary incumbrance, in promoting or advancing the kingdom of God. We don’t necessarily have to lobby politically in government institutions in order to initiate change, do we? Thank God for godly men and women in oppressive institutions, who feared God greatly and had not bowed to the ‘baals’ of this world. 
 
Are you and I guilty of zeal without knowledge in advancing the kingdom of God? Are we willing to be like Obadiah, to take risk in the kingdom of God in the hostile work places we are in? Do we see an opportunity to work silently in the midst of hostility that would bring impact for the gospel?

(Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly, 4 and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.” 6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.

1 Kings 15:27-30; 16:11-13 ESV 
27 Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him[Nadab]. And Baasha struck him down at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines, for Nadab and all Israel were laying siege to Gibbethon. 28 So Baasha killed him in the third year of Asa king of Judah and reigned in his place. 29 And as soon as he was king, he killed all the house of Jeroboam. He left to the house of Jeroboam not one that breathed, until he had destroyed it, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite. 30 It was for the sins of Jeroboam that he sinned and that he made Israel to sin, and because of the anger to which he provoked the Lord, the God of Israel. 
 
11 When he[Zimri] began to reign, as soon as he had seated himself on his throne, he struck down all the house of Baasha. He did not leave him a single male of his relatives or his friends. 12 Thus Zimri destroyed all the house of Baasha, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke against Baasha by Jehu the prophet, 13 for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, which they sinned and which they made Israel to sin, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their idols. 
 
DON’T PROVOKE THE LORD TO ANGER. 
Baasah, son of Abijah, became king by carrying a coup d’etat against Nadab, the wicked son of Jeroboam. And as soon as he was king, he killed all the house of Jeroboam. He left to the house of Jeroboam not one that breathed, until he had destroyed it, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite.[v.29] 
 
When Baasah died after 24 year reign, his son Elah became king. His reign was shortlived. During his second year, Zimri killed him as his father Baasah killed Nadab. What goes around comes around. What a man sows that will he also reap later. 
 
However, there is an indictment from God consistent to these events. The Lord allowed this to happen for “they made Israel to sin, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their idols.”[1 Kings 15:30; 16:13] Previously, Yahweh had declared through Moses, saying, “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me.” [Ex 20:3-5] 
 
God is a jealous God. He won’t tolerate that glory would be attributed to any of His creation. “For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.”[Isa 48:11] 
 
Thus, the apostle John had argued, “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”[1 John 5:20,21]

16 And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days. 17 Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and built Ramah, that he might permit no one to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah. 18 Then Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king's house and gave them into the hands of his servants. And King Asa sent them to Ben-hadad the son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, who lived in Damascus, saying, 19 “Let there be a covenant between me and you, as there was between my father and your father. Behold, I am sending to you a present of silver and gold. Go, break your covenant with Baasha king of Israel, that he may withdraw from me.” 20 And Ben-hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel and conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel-beth-maacah, and all Chinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali. 21 And when Baasha heard of it, he stopped building Ramah, and he lived in Tirzah. 22 Then King Asa made a proclamation to all Judah, none was exempt, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and its timber, with which Baasha had been building, and with them King Asa built Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah. 23 Now the rest of all the acts of Asa, all his might, and all that he did, and the cities that he built, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? But in his old age he was diseased in his feet. 24 And Asa slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father, and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place. 
 
FORTIFY YOUR BORDERS. 
Asa’s reign was comparable to Solomon’s early years of reign. But, unlike Solomon’s reign where there was peace, ‘there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.’ Baasha put pressure to Asa by fortifying Ramah. He was so displeased about the number of his people relocating to Judah, so he built this fortified city “Ramah”, about five miles north of Jerusalem. A fortified city was used to help protect a border. It usually included a large, thick wall and several towers. 
 
As this would effectively block all traffic into Jerusalem from the north, Asa had to find a way to stop the project. He sent a substantial gift, a bribe, to Benhadad of Aram to side with him against Baasha. It worked for him as Solomon had said, “A bribe is like a magic stone in the eyes of the one who gives it; 
wherever he turns he prospers.”[Prov 17:8] 
 
And when Baasha heard of it, he stopped building Ramah, and he lived in Tirzah.[v.21] As Baasha withdrew, Asa had mobilized Judah to come into Ramah. They carried away the stones of Ramah and its timber. He then built Geba and Mizpah as fortresses to ward off another attack from Judah's adversaries. It appeared that Baasha had left in such a hurry so that the building materials were left behind. 
 
We are in an ongoing tension too. Let’s fortify our spiritual borders too. Thus Paul had admonished, “ But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.”[Gal 5:16-17] Let us therefore “ put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.”[Rom 13:14]
